Republican lawmakers are pushing to attach roughly $11 billion in direct farm assistance to a defense spending package, but payments likely would not reach producers until spring 2027, raising concerns that relief could arrive too late for struggling farms.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman, R-Ark., still expects Congress to approve additional assistance. He is working with the White House and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to find a way to move the funding forward.

The proposal has gained support as farmers contend with tight margins, high operating costs and trade disruptions. Supporters warn that a delay of several months could leave some producers unable to continue operating before help arrives.

The push also has renewed debate about the federal government’s growing role in supporting farm income.

Farm groups say additional assistance is essential to help producers weather financial pressures. Some economists, however, question whether repeated emergency payments are becoming a regular source of income rather than temporary relief. Critics also argue that recurring assistance can encourage overproduction and weaken incentives to adjust to market conditions.

Congress has yet to approve the proposed assistance, leaving both the funding and the payment schedule uncertain.
