TEMPLE, Texas –&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/bradford_blake_qa9v">Blake Bradford</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/edmunson_will_rdcc">Will Edmunson</a>&nbsp;both homered in the first two at-bats of this weekend's Texas road trip on Friday at Temple College.

The Blue Dragons weren't able to sustain the momentum on those back-to-back homers and fell to Temple College 7-2.

Now 3-2, the Blue Dragons play at Hill College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and at McLennan College at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Bradford hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the game on Friday. Edmunson followed with his second homer of the season to give the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game. One out later,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/young_jackson_pkgv">Jackson Young</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/gunderson_cody_4bzo">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;both singled, but the Dragons didn't push more runs across.

From that point, the Blue Dragons had just one more hit in the game and the Temple bullpen didn't allow a hit over the final six innings.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit 14-5 by the Leopards.

Gunderson had the only multi-hit game for the Blue Dragons, going 2 for 4.

TISHOMINGO, Oklahoma – Murray State College has already rolled through a couple of Jayhawk Conference opponents early this season.

The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team didn't fare much better against the NJCAA Division II-No. 2-ranked Aggies on Friday.

Murray State combined for six home runs as the Aggies rolled by the Blue Dragons 18-2 and 8-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Dragons fell to 6-3 overall. Hutchinson wraps up this weekend's trip to Oklahoma and Texas with a Noon doubleheader on Saturday against North Central Texas in Gainesville, Texas.

GAME 1 RECAP Murray State hit four home runs and broke the game open with a nine-run third inning against four Blue Dragon pitchers.

Richard Earl Keim, Jr., 53, of McPherson, KS, and formerly of New Jersey, California, and Hawaii, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, surrounded by family at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Richard was&nbsp; a United States Navy Veteran, serving during Operation Desert Storm. He was a former police officer for the City of McPherson from 1997 to 2018, and was most recently a Senior Production Operator for Pfizer in McPherson.

Richard was born on April 8, 1969, in Trenton, NJ, the son of Richard Earl Keim, Sr. and Gail Etta (Trebil) Keim.&nbsp; He attended Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; On March 17, 2012, Richard was united in&nbsp; marriage to Holly M. Steinert in McPherson.&nbsp;

Survivors include: his loving wife, Holly Steinert-Keim of the home; children, Amanda Duever (Corey) of Sarasota, FL, Amber Keim of McPherson, KS, Adalynn Keim and Ashlynn Keim, both of the home; step-sons, Isaac Linscheid and Ethan Linscheid, both of McPherson, KS; mother-in-law, Sheila Smith of McPherson, KS; siblings, Paula Entwistle (Mark), Scott Hays, Lori Jones (Chris), and Gail Engle (Charlie); and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Hays.

A memorial service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. John Pattison officiating.

Michael A. Henderson, 69, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, KS of a sudden illness. He was born April 4, 1953 in Hutchinson, KS, the son of Louis H. and Louise (Danford) Henderson.

Michael graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1971 and took a year of schooling at Hutchinson Community College. Michael worked several jobs in California. He retired after 28 years from Underground Vaults and Storage as a records management clerk and he also worked on the mine rescue team. Michael loved to medal detect and go catfishing.

On January 2, 1998, Michael married Ranea Risley at First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include his brothers, Lou Henderson Jr. of Huntington Beach, CA, Tim (Beth) Henderson of South Hutchinson, KS; sister, Patricia Miller of Hutchinson, KS, stepsons, Ryan Corkins of Lawrance, KS, Brett (Celia) Corkins of Kansas City, MO; step-granddaughter, Natalia Corkins; brothers-in-law, Terry (Sandy) Risley of Viera, FL, and Jeff (Monica) Risley of Springhill, FL; sister-in-law, Cheryl (John) Laughary of Wichita, KS; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and cousins.

COLBY, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team got back on track by thumping Colby 80-41 on Tuesday evening inside the Colby Events Center. Hutchinson (20-7, 14-7 KJCCC) led 37-22 at halftime before outscoring the Trojans 43-19 in the second half to cruise to the road victory.&nbsp; The Blue Dragons really put the game out of reach in the third quarter when they outscored Colby (1-24, 0-20) 24-4 in the period. Hutchinson head coach John Ontjes was able to use his bench for several minutes in the second half, playing 12 girls in total, 10 of which scored in the win.&nbsp; Monae Duffy finished with a double-double, going for 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Kali Howard added 15 points. Mya Williams had 12. Hutchinson shot 41 percent from the floor in the win, going 33-of-81. The Blue Dragon defense held Colby to just 31 percent on 14-of-44. The Trojans were led by Aaliyah Chambers' 20 points. Hutchinson took care of the basketball, only committing 11 turnovers, while forcing 29 Colby miscues. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Qualifying high school seniors are encouraged to apply for scholarships administered annually at Hutchinson Community Foundation.

The deadline to apply for the Denny Hart Family Athletic Scholarship, the Lois and Avory Johnson Scholarship for Reno County Students, the Hutchinson News Future Journalist Scholarship and the Myrtle F. &amp; M. Eugene Hobson Memorial Fund for Nursing Education is noon March 24.

The Denny Hart Family Athletic Scholarship is open to any Reno County graduating senior. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the fall semester of the recipient’s freshman year at any accredited college or university. The award was established by the family of Denny Hart in honor of his commitment to a “behind the scenes” approach to helping young people.

The ideal applicant is involved in athletics, demonstrates a clear commitment to community through involvement in activities outside the classroom, demonstrates financial need and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Deadline to apply for the 2023 scholarship is noon March 24.

The Lois and Avory Johnson Scholarship for Reno County Students is open to seniors who are graduating from a Reno County high school and will be attending any certified institution of higher learning, including trade and vocational schools, beginning in the fall of 2023. Applicants should display academic ability and/or personal motivation to achieve goals, involvement in school, church or community activities or have been employed while still achieving academic success. Students pursuing any career may apply, but students entering the filed of Emergency Medical Services will be given preference.

Three scholarships are awarded annually. Each award is $2,000 ($1,000 per year for two years).

Community Foundation Scholarship deadlines soon

Andrew Jay McCurry,72, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023, at his home in Burrton, KS surrounded by his loving family.

Andy was born on September 8, 1950 in Hutchinson, KS to Ruth (Campbell) and A.J. McCurry. Andy graduated from Burrton High School in 1968; obtained a B.S. degree in Animal Sciences &amp; Industry from Kansas State University in 1978. Andy made a career change to meet his family goals and was accepted into the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1990. He worked as a pharmacist in the Hutchinson, KS area for 30 years retiring on his 70th&nbsp;birthday in 2020. He also worked for the Kansas Livestock Association from 1980-1984.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; son, John (Melody) McCurry and their children Aubree, Molly and Drew, Hutchinson, KS; daughter, Emily (Tyson) Mullen and their children, Avery and Hallie, Ulysses, KS. He was their biggest cheerleader and the light of his life.

Other survivors are sister, Carole (Rick) Schlender, Burrton, KS; brother, Ray (Rose) McCurry, Mt. Hope, KS; and brother-in-law, Raymond Dixon of McAlester, OK. Also, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Jan Dixon of McAlester, OK, sister-in-law, Sue (Smith) Coley of Rockford, IL, and nephew, Tyler Schlender of Burrton, KS.

Andy married Mary Elizabeth Smith on August 5, 1977 in Jackson, TN. Together they created a start-up registered Angus operation, McCurry Angus Ranch (formerly Marands Angus using their combined names …Andy &amp; Mary). As a 3rd&nbsp;generation Angus breeder, Andy wanted something he could call his own and not someone else’s legacy. It wasn’t the easy way but in reality he created his own legacy, his own Angus herd and ranch.

Never one to shine the light on himself, Andy worked tirelessly behind the scenes to turn a run-down piece of property into his own “homeplace”. A lifetime of pounding posts (thus the hearing loss!) by hand for over 40 years turned into a place hosting many livestock judging teams, visitors from across the US, cattle sales, chuckwagon cookouts and a place to raise his family. His work ethic, dependability and strong, solid values were the backbone of the decisions he made in his life.

Andy’s gift was the ability to meet people from all walks of life and “visit” with them. He was always interested in YOU…not himself. His network of friends was nationwide thanks to many years showing cattle with his family’s operation. There wasn’t a cattle event anywhere in the country that Andy didn’t know or see someone he had met in his journey with Angus cattle.

Because Andy re-invented himself by changing his career, he was sought out by many who were struggling with “what to do” with their life or unhappy in their chosen profession. He encouraged many to consider pharmacy as a career. When folks said “I wish I could” …. his response was “you can if you put your mind to it”.

Many awards came his way, some of which included:

Instead of traveling to attend a funeral, it was Andy’s wish that people use that time to do something positive for someone else; take your grandchild for a walk through the cattle, reconnect with someone from your past, go visit or help someone with a project you have been meaning to do; make an effort to resolve old conflicts or lend a stranger a helping hand. Offering your time and energy in this way will not only honor Andy’s memory and spirit, but benefit us all by touching the hearts and lives of others as he has touched ours.

The family would like to collect and make available a list of the good deeds done in memory of Andy; the deeds will be listed anonymously.&nbsp; This information can be mailed to the family, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Cremation has occurred and a family service will follow at a later date.

BEATRICE, Nebraska – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team earned its first series victory of the season after splitting Games 3 and 4 of the season-opening series with Southeast Community College on Monday at Christensen Field.

Will Edmundson continued his torrid start with a pair of twos and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/childress_max_4ayg">Max Childress</a>&nbsp;drove in three runs as Hutchinson defeated the Storm 8-4 in the first game on Monday. The Blue Dragons had 10 hits, but stranded 14 base runners in a 5-4 loss in the series finale.

The Blue Dragons are 3-1 after the opening weekend. The Blue Dragons travel to Texas this weekend for three games against Temple, Hill and McLennan.

⚾️ Dragon BSB starts 3-1

The Hutchinson and Colby Community College athletics departments made a mutual decision on Sunday to move up Wednesday's regularly scheduled games to Tuesday.

The reason that prompted the move is a scheduled winter storm for northwest Kansas on Wednesday and Thursday. Colby is forecast to have anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow with north wins above 30 mph.

The Blue Dragons and Trojans will now play on Tuesday at the Colby Events Center. The women's game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Open Spaces Sports will provide the only video stream of the games.

 </figure>Hutchinson CC Sports InformationThe Hutchinson and Colby Community College athletics departments made a mutual decision on Sunday to move up Wednesday's regularly scheduled games to Tuesday.The reason that prompted the move is a scheduled winter storm for northwest Kansas on Wednesday and Thursday. Colby is forecast to have anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow with north wins above 30 mph.The Blue Dragons and Trojans will now play on Tuesday at the Colby Events Center. The women's game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 7:30 p.m.Open Spaces Sports will provide the only video stream of the games.The games will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9), beginning at 5:15 p.m.

🏀Hutchinson at Colby Games moved up to Tuesday

Marilyn Ruth (Potter) Land was born August 4, 1939, in Iowa City, IA, the second child and only daughter of Samuel George and Inez Irene Marcella (Wright-Carson) Potter. She had an older brother, Larry Eugene, and two younger brothers, Richard Samuel and Paul Frederick. The family lived in Clarinda, IA, and Ruth, as she was always known to her family, attended Clarinda schools until 1956 when her family moved to Denver, CO where she attended high school, later graduating from Central Academy (now Central Christian College of Kansas) in McPherson, KS.

Ruth was married to Myron Black in 1963; her son Wesley Myron Black was born in 1964. She married Michael Milliken in 1981, and on April 13, 1991, was&nbsp;married to Jerome L. Land, with whom she had fallen in love as a teenager but had been prevented from marrying. They had a very happy 31 years together before his death in November 2022.

Ruth was employed at several different places in Colorado and California, retiring from Burroughs Corp/Unisys, where she was a purchasing agent, in 2001. She and Jerry moved from California to Moundridge, KS, in 2002.

In her younger years, Ruth enjoyed bowling, and was always politically active. She cheered on the Denver Broncos and the KC Royals and Chiefs. She and Jerry also enjoyed traveling together in later life and gathering with family in the holidays, with the 4th&nbsp;of July holiday being their favorite to host.

Ruth was brought up in the Free Methodist church. She belonged to Cornerstone Bible Church where she was baptized in 2022 at the age of 82.

Marilyn Ruth Land passed into eternity in the early morning hours of February 13, 2023, at Pleasant Hills Home in Hutchinson, KS. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Jerry Land, son Wesley Myron Black, brothers Richard and Paul Potter, sister-in-law Judith Potter, and great nephew Christopher Shepard.

She is survived by her brother Larry Potter, Inman, KS, sister-in-law Dolores Phelps (Bernie Wieland) of Florida, and step-children Linda Hess of Idaho, and Steve Land and Todd Land (Jerry Reinke) of Joplin, MO, step-grandchildren Serena Riley, Skyler Land, and Ryan Land, several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Ruth will be held Tuesday, February 21, 2023, 10:00 a.m. at Stockham Family Funeral home, 205 N Chestnut St, McPherson, KS with Pastor Josh Mills officiating. Burial will be at McPherson Cemetery.

Marilyn Ruth (Potter) Land |1939-2023|

Deborah Denise Boomhower, 65, of Salina, KS, and formerly of McPherson, KS and New Castle, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2023, at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; She worked 18 years as an operator for Southwestern Bell in McPherson and then as a switchboard operator for Jameson Hospital in New Castle, PA.

Debbie was born on December 8, 1957, in McPherson, KS, the daughter of Jay and Marilee (Kemp) Keagle.&nbsp;Debbie was the oldest of four sisters, and she loved being the “Number One” daughter.&nbsp;She graduated from McPherson High School in 1976 and attended Hutchinson Community College and Fort Hays University.&nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Hauck in 1988.&nbsp;They lived in Hutchinson, KS and then moved to Kansas City.&nbsp; It was during these years in Kansas City that Debbie became a huge Chiefs football fan.&nbsp; She watched every game with enthusiasm.&nbsp; Debbie and Bob then moved to Pittsburgh, PA where she also became fanatical about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even though she cheered for the Steelers, the Kansas City Chiefs were always number one in her heart.&nbsp;

Bob died in 1993.&nbsp; She later married James “Jim” C. Boomhower on June 16, 1997.&nbsp; Debbie and Jim moved to New Castle, PA where they were able to live close to Jim’s children and grandchildren. One of Debbie’s most treasured roles was being “mama Debbie” to Matthew, Trevor, and Lexie.&nbsp; After Jim’s death on November 18, 2008, Debbie moved back home to Kansas. She loved being able to spend valuable time with her parents, sisters, and nieces and nephews, as well as new friends made in Salina, KS, where she lived.

Debbie enjoyed cooking and baking for others.&nbsp; At her apartment home on potluck days, Debbie would be in the kitchen preparing yummy food to share with all her friends.&nbsp; She loved it!

Debbie was a fan of NBA and college basketball.&nbsp; She liked watching The Golden State Warriors and The Phoenix Suns, as well as college teams such as KU and K-State. &nbsp;

One of the highlights of her later life was purchasing her new red Ford Escape SUV, which she called “Boomie”.&nbsp; She was a proud Ford owner! &nbsp;

Debbie also loved all the pets and children in her life.&nbsp; She loved her sister Kelly’s dog, Keva, a mini golden doodle.&nbsp; Debbie would yell out, “Keeeve!”&nbsp; when she walked into the house, and Keva would run to her, wagging her tail and giving all her attention to Debbie. &nbsp;

Debbie missed her step-grandchildren after moving back to Kansas, but she doted on all her great nieces and nephews to help fill the void.&nbsp; She was excited to find just the right gift at Christmas and made a point to recognize each of them on their birthdays.&nbsp;

Debbie had many health challenges throughout her life.&nbsp; She approached each with strength, cheerfulness and a big smile. She will be missed. &nbsp;

Survivors include: her parents, Jay and Marilee Keagle of McPherson, KS; three sisters, Lori (Phil) Havens of McPherson, KS, Kelly (Hal) Havens of Lenexa, KS, and Stephanie (Darren) Whitcher of Lenexa, KS; nieces and nephews, Josh(Christy), Derek(Courtney), Audrey(Matthew), Kasey(Curtis), Brian(Kay), Abby, and Sam; great nieces and nephews, Caleb, Nathan, Landon, Lila, Graham, Cody, Jake, Teddy, Xander, Quinn, and Violet; three step-children, Dylan Boomhower, Melody Murray, and Lyric Carter; step-grandchildren, Sapphire, Matthew, Trevor, Alexis, and London; and many extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, March 3, 2023, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Parry officiating. Inurnment will follow at McPherson Cemetery.&nbsp;

Becky (Salmon) Rich, 74, died February 9, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Mary Beth Salmon on September 27, 1948, in Hutchinson, to Gerald and Bernice (Kaufman) Salmon.

Becky graduated from Buhler High School and Hutchinson Community College. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker for many years. Becky loved to spend time in nature, especially with flowers and birds. Some of her hobbies included cooking, baking, tennis, knitting, and golf. Becky was the oldest sister of five girls and loved her role as the big sister. She was also a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson

Becky married Gary Schmidt on August 24, 1967; he passed on December 5, 1969. She married Garry Rich on July 5, 1970; he passed away on December 7, 1971. Becky married Phil Hofer on February 24, 1978, who passed away on November 21, 1989. On July 30, 1993, Becky married Dan Rich, in Hutchinson. He survives.

She is survived by: husband, Dan Rich, Hutchinson; children, Amy Albright (Rex), Hutchinson, Kathy Skinner (Clinton Troyer), Hutchinson; step children, Carey Rich, Kansas City, Missouri, Matt Rich (Brandi), Hutchinson, Carolyn Hofer Zimmerman (Mark), Salina, Paul Hofer Shannon, York, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Ashley, Allyson, Dylan, and Zack; seven step grandchildren; sisters, Bev Wright, Hutchinson, Marsha Maatta (Jim), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sherri Parrish (Dan), Flower Mound, Texas, Donna Salmon, Hutchinson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

"Career and Technical Education has been aided and promoted so much by the Senate Bill 155 act that was put in place about 10 years ago," File said. "Now, high schools and Hutchinson Community College can partner together to offer college classes in the&nbsp;Career and Technical Education area to high school students."

This really helped especially moderate income Kansas kids get into these fields.

"It's really just provided a great pathway for students who, again, want that technical education, want to do more of the hands on type career than an academic career," File said. "It's given us a wonderful pipeline of students."

Not all of the classes that HutchCC gives credit for happen on their campus.

"It opened up Career and Technical Education to students that couldn't afford it before, because they couldn't afford the tuition to take the classes," File said. "The state of Kansas is paying the tuition, which the students, essentially pay to us. No real dollars exchange hands between us and the student, it all comes from the State of Kansas. That opened up the doors to a lot of students who, previous to that, their family may not have been in a position where they could actually afford to send them to college. Depending upon the relationship we have with the district, if the district provides the space and the faculty member and the materials and things like that, we then, do a revenue sharing with the district, so we reimburse them for their costs."

HutchCC President continues to praise career and tech ed

Virginia LaRee Shumpert, 61, died February 7, 2023, at Chase County Care and Rehab, Cottonwood Falls. She was born September 6, 1961, in Partridge, to Anthony David and Janice LaRee (Northrop) McGraw.

Virginia graduated from Nickerson High School in 1979. Following graduation, she attended Fort Hays State University for four years. Virginia played basketball, baseball and track in high school, and in college she was a bowler. Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother who always put her family first.

She was a member of South Hutchinson Christian Church.

Virginia is survived by: son, Alexander (Morgan) Shumpert of Hutchinson; brother, David (Beverly) McGraw of Brandon, FL; and grandchildren, Marcus and Charleigh.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Anthony and Janice McGraw; sister, Colleen Millett; and two brothers, Anthony and Daniel McGraw.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, with Deacon Todd Ray officiating.

Virginia and family requested that everyone attending the service, wear yellow.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team and Dodge City have played four must-see games over the course of the last two seasons. All four have come down to the wire with plenty at stake.

The second meeting of the season between Hutchinson (15-10, 9-10 KJCCC) and the No. 14-ranked Conquistadors (18-6, 14-4) will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action beginning around 7:15 p.m. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will stream the game beginning at 7:15 p.m.

The last four meetings between Hutchinson and Dodge City have been decided by 6 points, 4 points, 2 points in overtime and 1 point.

The Blue Dragons and Conquistadors last meet on December 10 at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City. There were eight ties and 18 lead changes, the final one coming with 0.4 seconds left in regulation when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;hit two free throws for a 113-112 victory over Dodge City.

Hutchinson has gone 6-5 since that victory over the Conquistadors, but has dropped back-to-back games to nationally ranked opponents Butler and Coffeyville. Dodge City has gone 8-4 since the first Hutchinson game with four-straight victories.

Last Wednesday at Coffeyville, the Blue Dragons dug a quick 16-point hole they were never able to climb out of in a 90-68 loss to the Red Ravens. Coffeyville shot 53.3 percent. The Ravens also hit nine 3-pointers and out-rebounded the Blue Dragons 40-34. The Dragons shot 40.0 percent and were led by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>'s 19 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/gaston-chapman_steele_3d3j">Steele Gaston-Chapman</a>'s 10 points.

The Blue Dragons remained in seventh place in the KJCCC. Hutchinson is 2.5 games behind the three-way tie for fourth place between Garden City, Barton and Pratt. The Dragons are just 0.5 game ahead of Cowley and Cloud County for eighth place.

Dodge City maintained sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk Conference Wednesday with a 69-68 victory over Butler. The Conquistadors now own a one game lead over Coffeyville and two games over Butler.

Hutchinson and Dodge City are the Nos. 1 and 3 offensive teams in the Jayhawk Conference this season. The Dragons are averaging 99.7 points and Dodge City is at 84.0 points per game.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Blue Dragons took a huge step in securing a spot in the top 4 of the KJCCC standings with a 68-63 victory over Coffeyville on Wednesday at Coffeyville. The Blue Dragons trailed by 18 points with 3:42 to play in the third quarter and outscored the Red Ravens 33-10 from that point on.

The victory over Coffeyville gives the Blue Dragons (13-6 in the KJCCC) a two-game lead over the Ravens for fourth place in the league standings and Hutchinson owns a key tie-breaker over Coffeyville with a season series sweep.

Dodge City is riding quite a wave of momentum with a 15-game winning streak. The first-place Conquistadors (17-1 in KJCCC) took a 2.5 game lead in the league on Wednesday with a 70-63 victory over second-place Butler in Dodge City. The Conquistadors knocked down 10 3-pointers and forced 24 turnovers. Leah Mafua had 14 points to lead four Dodge City players in double figures.

Hutchinson's 69-55 loss to Dodge City on December 10 is part of that 15-game winning streak. The Blue Dragons were stung by three big Dodge City runs in the first meeting. Hutchinson rallied back from the first two and trailed just 48-46 with 2:32 to play in he third quarter. Dodge City answered that challenge with a decisive 14-0 run over the next 4:52 of the game to take command.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;had 22 points to lead the Blue Dragons. Jada Burton and Leah Mafua had 15 points each to lead Dodge City.

Williams has climbed to No. 3 on the Blue Dragon career scoring chart with 1,093 points. She is six points shy of moving past Jamie Patrick for No. 2 on the list.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons to square off against 1st Place Dodge City

DENISON, Texas&nbsp;&nbsp;-&nbsp;&nbsp;The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, falling 6-2 to Eastern Oklahoma State in the opening game of the THF Winter Blast.

Hutchinson’s second game against Grayson College was canceled because of weather conditions. Saturday’s game for the Blue Dragons (4-1) are at 10 a.m. against Paris Junior College and 2:30 p.m. against Weatherford College.

Eastern Oklahoma State took advantage of early Blue Dragon walks and errors to score five runs in their first three at-bats on Friday.

Sophomore Kierstan Weitze (2-1) started her first game of the season and allowed five hits and five runs over 2 1-3 innings. Weitze struck out two and walked three.

Freshman pitchers Korri Lies and Delaney Blakesley slowed down Eastern’s offense. Lies allowed one run with one hit and two strikeouts in three innings. Blakesley had a strikeout in a scoreless 1 2-3 innings.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons didn’t get their first hit off Eastern’s Makenzie Martin until the sixth inning, an Olivia Sandoval single.

The Dragons were held to a season-low three hits – singles by Sandoval, Allie Stipsits and Grace Sykora.

Stipsits had an RBI single with two out in the sixth inning to get the Dragons on the board, driving in Ella Dougherty. Sykora singled to lead off the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit 6-3 and each team committed three errors.

The game of baseball has been overrun with analytics.

Players and coaches have so many numbers at their disposal now that the mass of information can be a daunting task to figure out and go out and execute the game plan.

As Ryan Schmidt begins his 11th season on Saturday as the Hutchinson Community College head baseball coach, he is looking to take that analytical stress off his players and "simplify" the game for his players.

"It took us a while to find our stride, but I was happy with some of the performances from our players late in the season."This season, we have a lot of strike throwers on the mound. We have a lot of really good hitters. We have to put our rotation together and put our lineup together. We will have to bring our defense along."The Blue Dragons finished 38-23 last season after a dreadful 7-13 start. Five position players and nine pitchers return for the 2023 season for Schmidt, who is 354-192 at Hutchinson and 461-363 in 15 seasons as a head coach.Third-year sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/sommer_braedyn_eehb">Braedyn Sommer</a>&nbsp;returns as the Blue Dragons' leading hitter from 2022. Sommer batted in the leadoff spot and hit .366 with a .475 on-base percentage. Sommer had 16 extra-base hits of his total of 48, including seven home runs. The sophomore outfielder, who was the primary designated hitter in 2022, drove in 31 runs, score 44 and stole 10 of 10 bases.Corner infielder&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/henderson_ryan_sab3">Ryan Henderson</a>&nbsp;smacked 10 home runs from the middle of the order this season. Starting the 2023 season at first base, the Buhler product hit .311 with 56 total hits, 17 doubles and 45 RBIs.The other two position returnees from 2022 are outfielders&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/babin_kael_ibra">Kael Babin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/edmunson_will_rdcc">Will Edmunson</a>.Babin hit .308 with 41 hits, five doubles and 30 RBIs. He stole 17 of 19 bases last season. Edmundson hit .289 with 13 total hits, four doubles and 10 driven in.The fifth returning players missed 2022, but returns this season in middle infielder&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/powell_christian_dv61">Christian Powell</a>, who hit 200 in 13 games in 2021.Right-handed starter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/dandelet_ben_xj34">Ben Dandelet</a>&nbsp;draws the Game 1 start on Saturday for the Blue Dragons. Dandelet was 2-1 with a 5.62 ERA in 12 appearances, 11 of those were starters. Dandelet brings plenty of momentum into his first start of 2023 after a breakthrough moment in 2022 when he pitched a nine-inning complete game in a 5-3 Region VI Tournament elimination game victory over Butler last May. Dandelet struck out four and scattered eight hits in that game.Sophomore right-hander&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/scott_reed_03bo">Reed Scott</a>&nbsp;had a strong first season out of the bullpen. Scott went 1-1 with four saves and a 5.87 ERA.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/beverman_brady_cf7n">Brady Beverman</a>&nbsp;was also solid out of the bullpen going 4-1, but had an elevated 8.88 ERA in 24 1-3 innings.<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/wickersham_kaden_64wc">Kaden Wickersham</a>&nbsp;makes the move from back-end of the bullpen to the starting rotation this season. Wickersham started as the closer last season but struggled through the middle stages of the season and produced a 3-2 record with three saves and an 8.19 ERA.Pitchers who return with a lot of time on the mound last season are: starting pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/blue_jackson_ncrj">Jackson Blue</a>&nbsp;(1-3, 11.49 ERA), reliever&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/uhler_michael_i630">Michael Uhler</a>&nbsp;(0-1, 8.88 ERA) and Derrick Johnson (0-0, 4.15 ERA).The obvious reasons for simplification for Schmidt are these … offensively, the Blue Dragons in 2022 hit .319 and averaged 8.5 runs per game. They produced those numbers with 460 strikeouts last season. The pitchers allowed 265 walks and hit 96 batters last season in a team 6.65 ERA, the highest of the Schmidt era."We had a lot of pitching issues early," Schmidt said. "We couldn't throw the ball over the plate. We had some games in a really good spot. We had two eighth-inning leads against No. 1 McLennan last season and we didn't hold them. That scared us out of the strike zone and we didn't think our stuff was good enough."This year, we are looking to simplify. We aren't making things more difficult; we are keeping a very simple approach and we are going to through the baseball over the plate with as much conviction as we can on every pitch."Looking ahead to this season, the Blue Dragons open the season with four games against Southeast – two on Saturday and two more on Monday in Beatrice, Nebraska. The starting rotation will have Dandelet,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/smith_justin_u248">Justin Smith</a>, left-handed freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/mckee_gus_hrea">Gus McKay</a>&nbsp;and Wickersham.Scott, Beverman and Uhler will lead the bullpen. Some first-year arms Schmidt excited about are Cole Tourneau,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/giesbrecht_ethan_uono">Ethan Giesbrecht</a>, McKay,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/ojeda_sam_8hjt">Sam Ojeda</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/wragge_sam_4jcu">Sam Wragge</a>&nbsp;and Sam Ojeda."Reed is a guy the team trusts and he's been in the fire before," Schmidt said. "The sophomores are throwing the ball well, but they are going to have to prove it. The freshmen are guys who are saying, 'coach, we can pitch, too.' "The Blue Dragons will have two freshmen catchers in&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/gunderson_cody_4bzo">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/cymbalista_colin_zaji">Colin Cymbalista</a>. Schmidt already feels very good about his first-year catchers."I love our catching corps," he said. "They catch the ball extremely well. They have a chance to be some of the best catchers we've had here. Gunderson might have a higher (batting) average and Cymbalista has more thump. But I feel really good about how they receive and throw the baseball. They can play at a high level."The infield will have Henderson at first half, Powell at second base, freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/wesslund_cooper_zdq0">Cooper Wesslund</a>&nbsp;at shortstop and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/childress_max_4ayg">Max Childress</a>&nbsp;will be at third."Cooper has been a pleasant surprise for us," Schmidt said. "He's owned that spot since Day 1 of fall ball. We are excited about what he can do. He's a great athlete. We knew he had the capability of being our shortstop and he's earned it."Max is a guy who won the job because he's been one of our most productive hitters. He finds a way to drive in runners and move runners."With Babin, Sommer and Edmundson back, the outfield is the most experienced group. Babin, slated for centerfield, but has been slowed some by injury, showed he can go gap-to-gap to chase down balls. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/bradford_blake_qa9v">Blake Bradford</a>, the son of former Blue Dragon and major league draftee Josh Bradford. Will be in the lineup and likely in the No. 2 spot in the order.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/davis_jon_ucpo">Jon Davis</a>&nbsp;is another outfielder who will warrant playing time."We have a lot of good pieces," Schmidt said. "We just have to piece them all together."The Blue Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the Jayhawk West preseason coaches' poll. The Blue Dragons finished fifth in the league last season, the lowest finish since 2013.
