HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sheila Berridge with Hutchinson USD 308 is looking forward to the All Hands on Deck professional development day on Jan. 3, 2024 at Hutchinson Community College.

"We know that professional development has a high impact on our teachers ability to teach our students and for our students to achieve in school," Berridge said. "Jim Knight, from Lawrence, he's going to come speak to us, he's our keynote speaker. That will take place at the Sports Arena and then we will have breakout sessions. There are over 100 breakout sessions that teachers may choose from."

Over 1100 Reno County educators will be in attendance.

"We have anything from instructional strategies, high impact instructional strategies to classroom management," Berridge said. "We even have coaching sessions with athletics and leadership and then SEL, diversity, you name it, we have a broad spectrum."

This has taken a while to get together, because in order to have an event of this size, you need to have everyone have the same day off of school and this event was really the thought of Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman.

"The Reno County Superintendents have met as long as I have been in the positions, leadership positions in Reno County," said USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson. "We meet once a month, just to collaborate about what's going on. At one point, probably 18 months ago, Cindy Couchman, the superintendent at Buhler, said, would you guys be willing to have a collaborative, we come back after Christmas and we kind of have a Reno County professional development day? We all sat around and said, our calendars are never, we're never, we'll have to sync our calendars and that's going to be hard. No one's going to agree to it. What could it possibly look like? She just kind of kept prodding and finally asked us to really ask our calendar committees. We all, eventually, got on board with that. This has become the amazing event that it has."

The event has 27 sponsors with around 100 presenters, all on the HutchCC campus for an entire day, and a vendor fair at lunch along with the final hour of the event as a chance for grade level teachers from all districts to get together and talk about what it means in their classrooms.

All Hands on Deck coming up Wednesday

Helma ‘Lou’ Luella Kerens, of Hutchinson, KS, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord on December 28, 2023, just ten days before her 104th birthday. &nbsp;She believed in living an active and healthy lifestyle and as a result she lived a long and fulfilling life. &nbsp;Lou took up swimming laps at the YMCA in her 60’s and was line dancing into her 90’s. &nbsp;She even performed with the Delos V. Smith Senior Center dancers at the Kansas State Fair. &nbsp;Lou enjoyed watching sports especially, college basketball, as she herself played some basketball in high school. &nbsp;She was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, KS, and Harvest House.

Lou was the firstborn child of Nickolai and Helen (Regier) Esau on January 7, 1920, in Buhler, KS. &nbsp;She graduated from Buhler High School before moving to Hutchinson, KS, where she attended Hutchinson Community Junior College. &nbsp;In 1939, she married Alfred Ratzloff. &nbsp;They later divorced. &nbsp;Lou married Edward P. Kerens on May 29, 1953. &nbsp;They were happily married for 59 years. &nbsp;

Lou worked a number of years at Sears and later as the bookkeeper for her husband Ed at “Ed’s Sharolyns House of Beauty, Inc.” which he owned and operated. &nbsp;

Lou is survived by five children: &nbsp;Marilyn Minks of Hutchinson, KS, Keith (Sandy) Ratzloff of Manhattan, KS, Edward Paul (Chris) Kerens, Jr. of Leawood, KS, Kathy (Marvin) Ireland of Hutchinson, KS, and Kris (Tony) Jandora of Martinsburg, WV; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her husband, Edward P. Kerens, Sr.; son, Ronald Ratzloff; son-in-law, Eldwyn Minks; sister, Rachel Neufeld; brother, Willis Esau; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.

Stephanie G. Johnson, 62, of Augusta, KS, died December 29, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born August 23, 1961, in Liberal, KS, to Robert and Bernice (Dondelinger) Blakesley.

Stephanie graduated from Ulysses High School, Ulysses, KS, in 1979, then from Hutchinson Community College with an associates degree in Healthcare Coding in 2016. During her life, Stephanie was a homemaker until her children did not need her to be home. After that, she worked at a flower shop in Ulysses, and later became the owner. Following her graduation from Hutchinson Community College, she enjoyed her job as a Medical Billing Specialist. Stephanie enjoyed having grandchildren and watching them play sports. In her free time, she liked to work with flowers, watch crime shows, such as CSI, and playing card games. Stephanie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ulysses.

Stephanie is survived by her: daughters, Lacey (Andrew Mercier) Donahue, Augusta, Kaleena (Tyler) Knackstedt, Hutchinson, and Brittany (Chance) Branscum, Maize; grandchildren, Kaden Valencia, Coryn and Claira Knackstedt, Hutchinson, Lennox and London Branscum, Maize, Kason Mercier, Augusta, and Alyssa Donahue, Houston, TX; brother, Justin Blakesley, Ulysses; niece and nephew, Alyssa Hammond and Mathew Blakesley, Ulysses; partner-in-crime cousin, Iris (Kim) Schwindt, Ulysses; and her cousin’s children, Kody and Aaron Schwindt, Ulysses and Kenneth Schwindt, Garden City, KS.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — John Eberly with the Hutchinson Art Center is glad to be a part of a long-standing tradition in the Salt City.

"The Art Association started back in 1949," Eberly said. "It met only in people's homes for a while, some art enthusiasts who then raised a lot of money and found a way to buy the former Jewish center up on North Main Street. When I got here in 1993 to teach Art History up at the college, it was still there. It was a beautiful building, it still is. It's now a private artist's studio. Then, we moved down to the present location at 405 North Washington."

The present building was donated in 1995 by Ace and Betty Dillon. Eberly would love to see pictures of it or of any of the previous activities of the Art Association, if the community has them to provide.

Hutchinson Art Association striding into 75th year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Post's new News Reporter, Emmie Boese has been with the company full time since mid-December, but she's been gaining experience in journalism since her high school days.

"I was an intern my senior year at the Ark Valley News," Boese said. "That's how I kind of got connected to writing and news reporting. I did some work at the Butler County Community College newspaper. Then, I worked for the Sunflower at Wichita State. Kind of in between then, I've done some freelance stuff for the Wellington Daily News and the Butler County Times-Gazette."

Boese also interned at the Wichita Eagle and at KMUW in Wichita, the NPR affiliate for Wichita State. Her first time on the air, though, was after coming to Eagle in Hutchinson part time a few months ago.

"Reporting is actually a little bit different, in terms of getting something that people want to hear when they are listening," Boese said. "I've definitely learned that reading for radio is different than just reading your news story after it's published."

Learning how to sound effortless while giving the right amount of space for them to speak in front of a source is something Boese is still working on.&nbsp;

"Your voice, obviously needs to sound conversational when you're reading a story," Boese said. "We're talking to you so people can hear your voice. It takes a little more critical thinking skills than it did when I just wrote for a newspaper."

Boese will regularly be responsible for the 5 p.m. weekday news hour and reporting on Eagle Media's stations and at Hutch Post.

New reporter learning radio news

Jerome Kane (Jerry) Fithian entered the arms of his Loving Savior on Dec. 29, 2023. Jerry, son of L. Boyd &amp; Inez Bertha (Grapenthin) Fithian, was born June 6, 1951, in Denver and joined sister, Janet, and soon to be (10 months later!), sister, Joann, in their Montclair area home.

Jerry’s faith walk was diligently woven throughout his growing up years, but came to fruition his freshman year in college. He was very involved in Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) in Junior High and High School but was challenged with a personal relationship with Jesus by his college roommate. Through his mentorship and Campus Crusade for Christ, Jerry gave his heart, soul, and mind to Jesus and began his lifelong adventure walking with Christ.

While in the second grade the family relocated to Broomfield, CO where he would graduate from Broomfield High School in 1969.&nbsp; Being part of two state-qualifying basketball teams (winning it all in 1967!), were among the many highlights of his high school years.&nbsp; Jerry continued his education at Colorado State College (renamed University of Northern Colorado in spring 1970), playing 3 years for the mighty Bears basketball team, before earning his BA degree in 1974.&nbsp; He received his MA degree from Emporia State University in 1995.

Jerry’s first teaching/coaching position was in Estes Park, CO and, yes, his employing superintendent was his former high school principal!&nbsp; After two marvelous learning years at Estes Park HS, Jerry was ‘recruited’ by acquaintances made at Northern Colorado to leave his native state and venture to Central College (oldest 2-year Kansas college) in McPherson, KS where he taught various business courses and was assistant men’s basketball coach.&nbsp; He would remain there (renamed Central Christian College of Kansas, 4-year college in fall 2000) in various teaching/coaching capacities until retiring in July 2012.&nbsp; In September, Jerry joined the fun ‘helpful hardware folks’ at Graber’s ACE Hardware, remaining for 9 years. Other ‘joyous jobs’ included Sunday School teacher/usher (Free Methodist Church), bus driver (USD 418), part-time accountant (McPherson Travel), adjunct instructor (Hutchinson CC), real estate agent (Randy Flickinger &amp; Assoc), finance manager (Wallace Chevrolet), restaurant server (Perkins), radio broadcaster (KNGL/KBBE), and, one of his favorites, city trolley driver (McPherson CVB).

He met his ‘green-eyed lady’, Carol E. Kane, while a dormitory Resident Assistant in fall 1970. They would marry June 9, 1973.&nbsp; To this 50-year union were born two children, daughter, Jamie Noel, and son, Jordan Kane, who brought their delightful spouses, Justin and Jennifer, to the family mix.&nbsp; Grandchildren Charlotte Mae Elizabeth Fithian and Jackson Thomas Fithian were behind the ever-present twinkle in Jerry’s eye.

Jerry enjoyed playing, coaching, officiating, and broadcasting basketball while filling his ‘off’ hours with cherished relatives and many friends: men’s prayer group, Bible studies, skiing (snow, water), golfing, bowling, card/game playing, traveling, dining out, puzzling (jigsaw, mind) and just ‘hangin out’.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, January 12, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. There will be a Celebration of Life service at the McPherson Free Methodist Church, 1010 South Maple, McPherson, KS at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Cremation has been chosen with final inurnment in McPherson Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, of McPherson; daughter Jamie Long (Justin) of Ramona, OK; son Jordan Fithian (Jennifer) and grands Charlotte and Jackson of Concord, NH; sister Joann Vollmer (Denny) of Evans, CO; 4 nephews, 2 nieces, other relatives and many friends.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd &amp; Inez; a half-brother, James Boyd; a sister, Janet Lee; and his parents-in-law, Allen and Lucille “Sally” (Simpson) Kane.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Christian College of Kansas, McPherson Free Methodist Church, or McPherson Family YMCA in Jerry’s name, in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 N Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.

 </figure>Jerome Kane (Jerry) Fithian entered the arms of his Loving Savior on Dec. 29, 2023. Jerry, son of L. Boyd &amp; Inez Bertha (Grapenthin) Fithian, was born June 6, 1951, in Denver and joined sister, Janet, and soon to be (10 months later!), sister, Joann, in their Montclair area home.Jerry’s faith walk was diligently woven throughout his growing up years, but came to fruition his freshman year in college. He was very involved in Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) in Junior High and High School but was challenged with a personal relationship with Jesus by his college roommate. Through his mentorship and Campus Crusade for Christ, Jerry gave his heart, soul, and mind to Jesus and began his lifelong adventure walking with Christ.While in the second grade the family relocated to Broomfield, CO where he would graduate from Broomfield High School in 1969.&nbsp; Being part of two state-qualifying basketball teams (winning it all in 1967!), were among the many highlights of his high school years.&nbsp; Jerry continued his education at Colorado State College (renamed University of Northern Colorado in spring 1970), playing 3 years for the mighty Bears basketball team, before earning his BA degree in 1974.&nbsp; He received his MA degree from Emporia State University in 1995.Jerry’s first teaching/coaching position was in Estes Park, CO and, yes, his employing superintendent was his former high school principal!&nbsp; After two marvelous learning years at Estes Park HS, Jerry was ‘recruited’ by acquaintances made at Northern Colorado to leave his native state and venture to Central College (oldest 2-year Kansas college) in McPherson, KS where he taught various business courses and was assistant men’s basketball coach.&nbsp; He would remain there (renamed Central Christian College of Kansas, 4-year college in fall 2000) in various teaching/coaching capacities until retiring in July 2012.&nbsp; In September, Jerry joined the fun ‘helpful hardware folks’ at Graber’s ACE Hardware, remaining for 9 years. Other ‘joyous jobs’ included Sunday School teacher/usher (Free Methodist Church), bus driver (USD 418), part-time accountant (McPherson Travel), adjunct instructor (Hutchinson CC), real estate agent (Randy Flickinger &amp; Assoc), finance manager (Wallace Chevrolet), restaurant server (Perkins), radio broadcaster (KNGL/KBBE), and, one of his favorites, city trolley driver (McPherson CVB).He met his ‘green-eyed lady’, Carol E. Kane, while a dormitory Resident Assistant in fall 1970. They would marry June 9, 1973.&nbsp; To this 50-year union were born two children, daughter, Jamie Noel, and son, Jordan Kane, who brought their delightful spouses, Justin and Jennifer, to the family mix.&nbsp; Grandchildren Charlotte Mae Elizabeth Fithian and Jackson Thomas Fithian were behind the ever-present twinkle in Jerry’s eye.Jerry enjoyed playing, coaching, officiating, and broadcasting basketball while filling his ‘off’ hours with cherished relatives and many friends: men’s prayer group, Bible studies, skiing (snow, water), golfing, bowling, card/game playing, traveling, dining out, puzzling (jigsaw, mind) and just ‘hangin out’.The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, January 12, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. There will be a Celebration of Life service at the McPherson Free Methodist Church, 1010 South Maple, McPherson, KS at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East 11th Avenue and North Plum.

Hutchinson Junior College began in 1928 in an addition on the north side of the high school at 28 East 7th.

As attendance grew in 1938, work was started on a new campus located on the northeast corner of 11th and Plum. Lockman Hall was completed and, just east of that, Gowans Stadium was constructed — named after the college's first superintendent, J.W. Gowans. The first photo is an aerial taken of Gowans Stadium, football field and track, by 17-year-old Nation Meyer,&nbsp;who was earning his pilot's license, in the fall of 1938.

The second photo, taken in 1965, is another aerial showing the entire college campus and Sports Arena.

In August 2006, voters approved a bond to refurbish Gowans Stadium. It was dedicated in August of 2006. The third photo shows another aerial of the college campus and the new Gowans Stadium in 2014.

The fourth photo shows the inside of Gowans Stadium today with its new, huge video board. It is a facility that Hutchinson and the community college can be very proud of.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Gowans Stadium - Vol. 50

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Garrick Harmon is a 1988 graduate of Hutchinson High School and is on the wall of honor. He is also now a two star general. More specifically, he is Major General Garrick M. Harmon of the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command. Harmon was selected to gain his second star earlier this month.&nbsp;

Harmon's parents, Cheryl and Ken Harmon still reside in Hutchinson. Cheryl said she and her husband were overwhelmed with emotion when they found out their son would be a two star general in the Army.

"We sat here and bawled first," Cheryl said. "Wow, you are what, you know? We knew when he was on the list but you know, we didn't know when that was going to get clarified and taken care of and it's like wow, you know. We just thought the one star and that would be the end."

Cheryl said her son grew up always knowing what he wanted to do.&nbsp;

"And he walked into his Kindergarten teacher and said I just want you to know, I'm going to West Point and I will be a general someday," Cheryl said.&nbsp;

Cheryl said her son's early familiarity with the Army may have had to do with the fact that he was surrounded by family members who were in the service. His closest tie is his dad Ken, who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.&nbsp;

Ken said he and his son bonded over the Navy versus Army college football game that closes every regular season.&nbsp;

"Every morning, no matter where he was, I would call him up," Ken said. "Leave a message or talk to his wife, you know, Go Navy, beat Army,&nbsp; and he would do the same thing to me."

Ken and Cheryl said their son knew all the "stories" and many facts about war history. Ken recalled coming home one night the day before the anniversary of D-Day of WWII to Garrick and a friend imitating a piece of history from the event.&nbsp;

"I came in the house and I heard water running and I thought okay," Ken said. "Something was wrong so I checked it out. Garrick and a friend of his that lived down the street here put a tent up and took the sprinklers and put them beside the tent because it was raining that night before they finally called it off."

Garrick Harmon graduated with a Bachelor of Science in European History and Russian Language from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1992 and a masters of Arts in Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia Studies from Harvard University. He also has a Masters of Arts in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College and was a fellow in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI Program.&nbsp;

Some of the Hutchinson native's awards and decorations include a Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star Medal and others. He is married and has three adult children.&nbsp;

Hutch High graduate now Major General

Irene G. “Reenie” Anzo, 94, of Hutchinson, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.

Irene was born in Hutchinson, KS on August 29, 1929, the daughter of Mauro and Pauline (Jaramillo) Garcia. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1947 and attended Salt City Business College. She was a secretary at Hutchinson Bag Corporation for several years and did other secretarial work, but was a homemaker most of her married life.

Irene loved music, singing, reading and also loved to sew, crochet, knit and working on puzzles. She especially loved being with her children. She sang in her youth at church and in a small high school ensemble. Irene and her sister, Virginia, sang at many social gatherings and Irene also sang solo. On February 13, 1954, she married Ralph C. Anzo in Hutchinson. He passed away on May 21, 2013. They shared 59 years of marriage.

Survivors include her son, Steven G. Anzo and wife, Sandra; son-in-law, Larry Cruz; three granddaughters, Erika Anzo, Kristen Gates and Alexis Cruz; three grandsons, Steven A. Anzo, Joseph Cruz and Alex Cruz; and great grandson twins, Lincoln and Memphis Witt. She also had over 125 nieces and nephews for whom she had much love for.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; daughter, Sally K. Cruz; and her brothers and sisters.

Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th, Hutchinson, KS, with Father Will Stuever officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until rosary on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS. Memorial may be made to Hospice of Reno County or American Cancer Society and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Irene G. “Reenie” Anzo |1929-2023|

Phyllis J. Snyder, 91, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023 at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;She was born April 20, 1932, on the farm near Windom, KS, the daughter of Guy E. and Beulah M. (Kidd) Snyder.

Phyllis later moved to Hutchinson and Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas. &nbsp;She trained in Medical Technology at Grace Hospital and worked there for a time and then worked for St. Elizabeth and Hutchinson Hospital. &nbsp;After working in the clinical laboratory for 38 years, she retired and volunteered for Hospice of Reno County, reins of Hope and the Read With me program at Graber Elementary School. &nbsp;Phyllis traveled overseas several times, and took many cruises and traveled to many parts of the United States. &nbsp;In her spare time she enjoyed golfing, bowling, being with family and friends and cheering on her Jayhawks. &nbsp;

Phyllis was active in Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Altrusa International of Hutchinson and other organizations connected to her career in Medical Technology.&nbsp;

Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Norris and Dwight; nephew, Alan Snyder, great niece, Molly Snyder; and four beloved shelties, Taffy Jill, Doodles, Callie and Mindy.

She is survived by her nephew, Daniel Snyder and wife Donna of Nickerson, KS; two nieces, Janis Smoley and husband, Jim of Hutchinson, KS and Dixie Deines and husband Rick of Milwaukee, WI; and many great nephews, nieces; and great-great nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS with Rev. Dr. &nbsp;Kim &nbsp;Biery officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until service time at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel. &nbsp;Burial will take place at Bean Cemetery, Little River, KS at 2:30 p.m. &nbsp;Memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Reins of Hope, Hospice of Reno County or Donor’s Choice and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

(Kidd) Snyder.Phyllis later moved to Hutchinson and Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas. &nbsp;She trained in Medical Technology at Grace Hospital and worked there for a time and then worked for St. Elizabeth and Hutchinson Hospital. &nbsp;After working in the clinical laboratory for 38 years, she retired and volunteered for Hospice of Reno County, reins of Hope and the Read With me program at Graber Elementary School. &nbsp;Phyllis traveled overseas several times, and took many cruises and traveled to many parts of the United States. &nbsp;In her spare time she enjoyed golfing, bowling, being with family and friends and cheering on her Jayhawks. &nbsp;Phyllis was active in Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Altrusa International of Hutchinson and other organizations connected to her career in Medical Technology.&nbsp;Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Norris and Dwight; nephew, Alan Snyder, great niece, Molly Snyder; and four beloved shelties, Taffy Jill, Doodles, Callie and Mindy.She is survived by her nephew, Daniel Snyder and wife Donna of Nickerson, KS; two nieces, Janis Smoley and husband, Jim of Hutchinson, KS and Dixie Deines and husband Rick of Milwaukee, WI; and many great nephews, nieces; and great-great nephews and nieces.A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS with Rev. Sharis Marie Ballard, 73, died December 23, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born May 27, 1950, in Garden City, to Charles Henry and Zora Waneta (Clinton) Moore, Sr.

Sharis graduated from Scott City High School and Hutchinson Community Junior College, in September 1971, with her nursing degree. &nbsp;She was a registered nurse for over 35 years. &nbsp;Her true passion was working in pediatrics and OB-GYN at the Hutchinson Clinic. Sharis enjoyed traveling, sewing, playing Bunco, and her book club. &nbsp;Family was everything to Sharis, especially her four grandchildren. &nbsp;She treasured attending all of their activities throughout the year. &nbsp;Sharis was a member of Community Church of the Brethren, Hutchinson, and was currently attending Buhler Mennonite Church, Buhler. &nbsp;

On December 21, 1969, she married Billy Cliff “Butch” Ballard, in Friend, KS. &nbsp;They shared almost 48 years of marriage, before his death July 28, 2017.

Sharis is survived by: &nbsp;her son, Brian Ballard (Georgia); four grandchildren, Jesse Ballard, Drew Ballard, Marlee Ballard, and Micah Ballard, all of Inman; sister, Veda Allen of Grand Junction, CO; brother, Charlie Moore (Darla) of Scott City; her cousin and traveling partner, Linda Collins; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said that fundraising for a new Y will continue into 2024.

"We're real happy with the progress we've made so far," Foster said. "I know I've mentioned it on here a time or two, but we're looking to raise around $20 million to provide us the type of facility and amenities that we would want to have here. Year to date, we are officially in pledges at $9,650,000. Kind of where we wanted to be, but even a little bit ahead of schedule, which is really, really exciting."

Once they get to $20 million, then the clock starts on getting their new facility built.

"It will probably take a year to 18 months, I would say," Foster said. "Just depending on exactly what we're going to be doing. We'll have a little better handle on that the first of this year. We'll be getting some pretty specific drawings done from our architects, as far as the amenities and things that our new YMCA will have and we can get everybody in the community really excited about that."

The plan is to make things a little bigger, but be in the same place in town.

"We just love that location, near the high school, near the college and centrally located in town," Foster said. "We just feel that is pretty accessible for everybody in Hutchinson, but also allows us to build on some partnerships that we already have with the school district, the college and the Boys and Girls Club and some other local agencies, as well."

The cost of the Y may actually be above the $20 million mark, but they plan to take out a loan for the rest and pay it back over time with operating revenue.

YMCA has almost half of pre-construction goal

Leading one of the stingiest defenses this season, Hutchinson Community College sophomore defensive end&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/brown_daniel_a1x7">Daniel Brown</a>&nbsp;was named the 2023 NJCAA National Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound defensive end from Kansas City (Bishop Ward), Kansas was the nation's leader in quarterback sacks with 18 and was third in the NJCAA in tackles for loss with 23.5, leading the nation's No. 1 scoring defense and No. 5 rushing defense.

Brown is the third Blue Dragon to win NJCAA National Defensive Player of the Year honors. Defensive tackle Eugene Kinlaw won the award in 2008 and cornerback Roterius Torrence won it in 2020/21.

The Blue Dragon defensive end is the ninth overall National Player of the Year winner in all sports. Along with the three football national award winners, Kadeem Allen (2014, men's basketball), Kyle Simonds (2014, baseball); Sarah Rothe (2014, Division II softball), 2017 Shakur Juiston (2017, men's basketball), Michael Helman (2017, baseball) and Ben Partridge (2021, men's golf) are the other Blue Dragons to earn national honors.

"Daniel is the ultimate professional at his job," Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas said. " He has earned everything throughout the process and is an extremely hard worker. His mentality and mindset paired with his skillset and athleticism make him a special player on the defensive side of the ball."

Brown, who was also named the 2023 Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year, earned many accolades with his ability to rush the quarterback. But Brown was equally effective disrupting the opponents' rushing game as well.

Brown finished the season with 52 overall tackles, including 32 unassisted tackles. He added two forced fumbles, 13 quarterback hurries one pass broken up and two safeties this season. The Dragons allowed only 11.7 points and 67.2 rushing yards per game, holding both Ellsworth and Garden City to negative rushing yards in those respective games.

But his 18 quarterback sacks drew the most attention to the Blue Dragon defensive end who has committed to the University of Illinois.

+ Brown had the second-most sacks in Blue Dragon single-season history and is seventh on the Hutchinson career list.

+ Brown is the first Blue Dragon to lead the nation in quarterback sacks since Tre Pinkney in 2020/21.

+ Those 18 sacks are the most in the NJCAA since 2019 when Celestin Haba of Scottsdale, Sam Okyayinono of Mesabi Range and Sam Williams of Northeast Mississippi all had 17.5 sacks.

Brown registered sacks in 10 consecutive games this season, which is the second-longest consecutive streak in Blue Dragon history. Only Troy West's run of sacks in 14 consecutive games over two seasons was longer.

Brown had back-to-back two sack games against Ellsworth and No. 5 Iowa Central in early September and then had back-to-back three-sack games against No. 11 Dodge City and Garden City in October.

The two-time Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Week had back-to-back eight-tackle games against Dodge City and Garden City as well.

In Hutchinson's 42-28 come-from-behind win over Iowa Western on November 11, Brown notched two sacks, including a sack/fumble, and six total tackles. That sack/fumble was the momentum-changing play the Blue Dragons needed against the Reivers. Trailing 21-7 late in the second quarter, Brown's sack/fumble was recovered by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/bob_jr._walter_mtg8">Walter Bob Jr.</a>&nbsp;at the Iowa Western 23-yard line with 1:02 to play in the quarter. Two plays later,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/collier_samari_cpv0">Samari Collier</a>&nbsp;found Oran Singleton with a 31-yard touchdown pass with 45 seconds to play in the period. Hutchinson trailed 21-14 at halftime.

"Not only was his production elite for us this season but also his leadership on and off the field was special," Dallas said "This was Daniel's first season of playing along the defensive line and he has a bright future ahead of him. He will be fun to watch continue to grow throughout his football career."

🏈 HutchCC's Brown named NJCAA National Defensive Player of the Year

Julie Marie Beam, 62, of Hutchinson, died December 18, 2023, at Hospice House. She was born January 9, 1961, in Great Bend, to James L. and Linda L. (Holt) Meek.

Julie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1979 and attended Hutchinson Community College. She loved taking care of children and worked as a child care attendant at CrossPoint Church and then as a dorm mother at Victory Village Christian Academy. Julie also loved to paint, read, collect comic books, and watch movies with her family. She was active in sharing Bible verses in online Bible forums and Christian message boards.

Julie is survived by: her son, Nathan Beam, his wife, Hannah, and their son, Malachi, of Hutchinson; mother and stepfather, Linda and Richard McCullum of Hutchinson; sisters, Lisa Dimmitt and her husband, John, and Jenni Buckmaster and her husband, Buckey, all of Wichita; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Meek.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Bill Cowell of Victory Village officiating. Burial will follow in Buhler Municipal Cemetery East.

(Holt) Meek.Julie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1979 and attended Hutchinson Community College. She loved taking care of children and worked as a child care attendant at CrossPoint Church and then as a dorm mother at Victory Village Christian Academy. Julie also loved to paint, read, collect comic books, and watch movies with her family. She was active in sharing Bible verses in online Bible forums and Christian message boards.Julie is survived by: her son, Nathan Beam, his wife, Hannah, and their son, Malachi, of Hutchinson; mother and stepfather, Linda and Richard McCullum of Hutchinson; sisters, Lisa Dimmitt and her husband, John, and Jenni Buckmaster and her husband, Buckey, all of Wichita; and many extended family members.She was preceded in death by her father, James Meek.Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Bill Cowell of Victory Village officiating. Seven members of the Hutchinson Community College football team earned 2023 NJCAA All-America honors on Tuesday. &nbsp;

Defensive End Daniel Brown, safety Ryan Nolan and return specialist Tre Richardson were first-team All-America selections. Offensive lineman Jayven Richardson, defensive tackle Danny Saili and running back Tyrell Reed Jr., were second-team selections. Punter Stefaan Forbes was named honorable mention.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons went 10-1 this past season and won their fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference championship. The Dragons played in the NJCAA National Playoff semifinals for the second-straight season. The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 1 for 11 consecutive weeks and finished No. 3 in the final national poll released on Monday. &nbsp;

Over head coach Drew Dallas’ four seasons with the Blue Dragons, he has produced 33 overall NJCAA All-Americans, including 11 first-team selections.&nbsp;

This is the sixth-straight season Blue Dragon Football has produced at least one first-team All-American and the 16th consecutive season of having at least one All-American.&nbsp;

DANIEL BROWN – First-Team -- Defense&nbsp; Brown led the nation in quarterback sacks this season with 18 and was third in total tackles for loss with 23. &nbsp;

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound defensive end from Kansas City (Bishop Ward), Kansas, had an exceptional season. He was named the Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year in November.&nbsp;

Brown registered a sack in 10-straight games, the second-longest streak in Blue Dragon history. Troy West (1996-97) had a streak of 14-straight games with a sack. Brown’s 18 sacks are second-most in Blue Dragon single-season history to West’s 19 in 1996. He ranks sixth on the Blue Dragon career sacks list.&nbsp;

Brown finished the 2023 season with 52 total tackles, 32 tackles were unassisted. His 18 sacks totaled 130 yards in losses and his 23 tackles for loss accumulated 163 yards in opposition losses. Brown also had 13 quarterback hurries.&nbsp;

Brown forced two fumbles, recovered one and had one pass broken up. Brown was also credited with two safeties this season against Ellsworth and Independence. &nbsp;

RYAN NOLAN – First-Team -- Defense&nbsp; Nolan tied for the NJCAA national lead in interceptions with seven this season. &nbsp;

The 5-10, 185-pound safety from Gainesville, Florida, played in eight games this season, missing the final two games with injuries.&nbsp;

Nolan had 21 total tackles this year, including two tackles for loss. Nolan broke up five other passes this season.&nbsp;

His seven interceptions were seventh most on the Blue Dragon single-season list.&nbsp;

Nolan tied a team single-game record with three interceptions against No. 5 Iowa Central on September 9 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. All three interceptions came in the second quarter against the Tritons.&nbsp;

Nolan also had a two-interception game in a 13-0 win over Highland on October 28.&nbsp;

TRE RICHARDSON – First-Team – Special Teams&nbsp; From opening night, the 5-11, 195-pound freshman from Topeka (Highland Park) made it known he would be one of the top return specialists in the nation.&nbsp;

Richardson had two kickoff returns, including a 92-yard touchdown, and accounted for 268 all-purpose yards in a 42-6 road victory at No. 13 Navarro on August 26. The 268 all-purpose yards were fifth most in single-game Blue Dragon history.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragon return specialist was second in the nation in kickoff return average at 27.1 yards per return with a touchdown. Richards returned 22 kickoffs for 596 yards this season. He was also second in punt-return average at 16.2 yards per return with two touchdowns. He returned two punts for touchdowns against Coffeyville on September 23.&nbsp;

Richardson produced 1,332 all-purpose yards this season. Averaging 133.2 all-purpose yards per game, he ranked fifth in the NJCAA. Richardson had 15 pass receptions for 365 yards and four touchdowns. He had six rushes for 31 yards and one touchdown.&nbsp;

TYRELL REED JR. – Second-Team – Offense&nbsp; Reed rushed for a team-high 831 yards on 131 carries with 13 touchdowns this season. &nbsp;

The 5-10, 195-pound running back from Topeka (Lawrence High School) finished 10th in the NJCAA in rushing average at 74.1 yards per game. That mark was second in the KJCCC. His 831 rushing yards were eighth most in the nation and his 13 rushing touchdowns were second most in the NJCAA in 2023.&nbsp;

Reed had four 100-yard rushing games with a season-high 171 yards coming against Ellsworth only nine carries and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 124 against East Mississippi, 117 against Butler and 115 against Dodge City. &nbsp;

Reed’s 13 rushing touchdowns ties Dezmon Jackson (2018) for fifth most in Blue Dragon history. His 6.2 yards per carry ties Tyren Jones (2015) for 12th on the Blue Dragon single-season list.&nbsp;

JAYVEN RICHARDSON – Second-Team – Offense&nbsp; As a left tackle, Richardson anchored an offensive line that helped produce the third-best scoring offense and fifth-best rushing offense in the NJCAA this season.&nbsp;

Richardson, a 6-7, 305-pound from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, started all 11 games for the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

He helped pave the way for the Blue Dragons to score 37.6 points per game this season. The Blue Dragons rushed for 227.3 yards per game and had 32 rushing touchdowns, seventh most in Blue Dragon single-season history.&nbsp;

Richardson was a first-team All-KJCCC performer this season.&nbsp;

DANNY SAILI – Second-Team – Defense&nbsp; Saili led a defensive line that helped the Blue Dragons produce the No. 1 scoring defense, the second-best rushing defense and the second-most quarterback sacks in the NJCAA this season.&nbsp;

A 6-2, 355-pound defensive lineman from Topeka, had 21 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss (28 yards) and 4.0 quarterback sacks (22 yards). Saili had four other quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and a pass broken up.&nbsp;

Saili also had a blocked field-goal attempt against Independence on November 4.&nbsp;

Saili had a season-high four tackles with a sack against Dodge City on October 7.&nbsp;

Saili and the Blue Dragon front seven allowed 11.7 points per game, which led the nation. The Dragons allowed only 67.2 rushing yards and 246.5 total yards per game.&nbsp;

STEFAAN FORBES – Honorable Mention – Special Teams&nbsp;Forbes is the first Blue Dragon punter to earn NJCAA All-America honors since John Racette in 2004.&nbsp;

The 6-1, 170-pound sophomore transfer from Tulsa, Oklahoma led the Jayhawk Conference and ranked fifth in the nation in punting average at 39.6 yards per punt.&nbsp;

His long punt of 66 yards tied for fourth-best in the NJCAA and his 20 punts inside the 20 were sixth most in the nation this season.&nbsp;

Forbes had eight punts of 50 yards or longer.&nbsp;

CHARLOTTE, NC&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College football team ends the 2023 season ranked No. 3 in the final poll released by the NJCAA, which was released on Monday afternoon.

The Blue Dragons ended the 2023 campaign with a semifinal loss to eventual national runner-up, East Mississippi. Hutchinson had a 10-1 overall record and claimed their fourth straight Jayhawk Conference title, going 6-0 in conference play.

National champion Iowa Western finishes No. 1 in the postseason poll, followed by East Mississippi, Hutchinson, Copiah-Lincoln and Kilgore in the top five.

Two other Jayhawk Conference teams cracked the Top 15 poll, led by Dodge City at No. 6 and Highland at No. 15.
