Jaedyn Michalle Douglas, 23, of Maize, died January 10, 2024, as a result of a traffic accident near Haven. She was born March 6, 2000, in Hutchinson, to Billy Douglas and Sunshine Willis.

Jaedyn graduated from Nickerson High School and Hutchinson Community College. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the E.R. at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, in Wichita, and had previously worked in the E.R. at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Jaedyn loved being a mom, singing, music, her career, and her dogs.

Jaedyn is survived by: her daughter, Emersyn Douglas; mother, Sunshine George (Kevin); father, Billy Douglas; grandparents, Denise Willis, Arley Philbrick (Rhonda), Mike Douglas (Margo), Patricia Gough (Rodney); siblings; Dakota Douglas, Uriah Gilley, Lily Chapman, Elijah Chapman; aunts, Dezarae Willis, Ashley Barton; beloved Pit Bull, Lexi; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her beloved American Bulldog, Bella.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 18, 2024, at CrossPoint Church, 1410 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Wednesday, with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary.

Margaret “Maggie” Robinson was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She left this world suddenly on January 8th, 2024 due to complications from hip replacement surgery. She was 66.

Maggie was born to Shirley and Parm Moyers of Hutchinson, where she resided her whole life. She attended Hutchinson Community College where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1979. For 32 years she worked everywhere from Hutchinson Hospital, to hospice to, home healthcare. She was a compassionate nurse and touched many lives during her career.

She married the love of her life, Randy, in 1983, and had two daughters, Stacy and Melinda. She loved mystery novels and science fiction tv and movies. Her other hobbies included music, swimming, taking her daughters roller skating and spending time with her grandson, Deacon. She participated in Bluestem Pace where she made numerous lasting friendships. She was loved by many and will truly be missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Jody Gilley and niece Jennifer Gilley. She was survived by her husband Randy, daughters Stacy and Melinda (Katie Gannaway), grandson Deacon LaGreca, brothers Roy, Charley, Ben, and John Moyers, brother-in-law Jim Gilley and niece Jessica Gilley.

Memorial service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday beginning January 15.

Hazel Louise King, 74, died January 9, 2024, with her two sons by her side, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born December 25, 1949, in Pratt, to Robert Lee and Elizabeth Ann (Connley) Barnes.

Hazel graduated from Pratt High School in 1969, and Dodge City Community College in 1974. &nbsp;She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for the Pratt Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;Hazel was of the Christian faith.

She married &nbsp;Ronald Dean Newby. &nbsp;He died April 4, 1969. &nbsp;Hazel then married Edwin Evan King March 1, 1987, in Turon. &nbsp;He died September 21, 2005.&nbsp;

Hazel is survived by: &nbsp;sons, Ronald Newby and Roger Newby (Yvette), all of Hutchinson; brothers, Robert Barnes of Belton, MO, LeRoy Newby, Gerald Newby, Larry Newby, and David Barnes, all of Pratt.

She was preceded in death by: her son, Shawn Millington; her mother-in-law, Mary Alice Newby; father and stepmother, Robert and Marcia Barnes; birth mother, Elizabeth Connley; grandmother, Alice Barnes; brothers, Raymond and Michael Barnes; and a sister, Cynthia Gillis.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Healthy Neighborhood Initiative, a program of the Neighborhood Development division of Hutch Rec, is proud to unveil its new logo, a symbol of unity and partnership that embodies the collaborative efforts of Hutch Rec, the City of Hutchinson, and residents. The logo features two converging circles with a home at the center, representing community, collaboration, and the coming together of diverse elements to create a unified whole through the initiative's impactful work.

"We are happy to introduce our new logo, which is a visual representation of the partnership and collaboration at the core of the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative," said Tony Finlay, Executive Director at Hutch Rec.

The logo launch comes as the initiative prepares to share success stories of its eight featured neighborhoods: SW Bricktown, Grace Arbor, Creekside, College Grove, Farmington Park, The Founders Neighborhood, Midtown, and the area surrounding Lincoln-McCandless Elementary. Each neighborhood has unique achievements and contributions to the overall community spirit and healthy living in Hutchinson.

On January 27 and February 3, these neighborhoods will host their Annual Meetings where residents will set future goals, discuss funding for projects, and plan neighborhood activities. Dates, times, and locations for these meetings can be found on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/healthyneighborhoodsinitiative/events" target="_blank">Healthy Neighborhood Initiative’s Facebook page</a>. Both residents and community members are encouraged to attend.

Currently, the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative is actively seeking participation from residents in the Lincoln-McCandless Elementary area. Healthy Neighborhood Initiative unveils new logo 

Former Hutchinson High all-stater, Pittsburg State four time All-American &amp; National defensive player of the year,&nbsp; Nate Dreiling has been named defensive coordinator at Utah State in the Mountain West Conference according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Dreiling spent the last two years at New Mexico State as defensive coordinator where he elevated the program to the #1 defense in conference USA with a 10 win season, plus back to back bowls. 

The Victoria/Hutch native has also coached for Southeast Missouri State, Oregon, Pittsburg State, KU, Humboldt HS, in his career. 

Dreiling is one of young rising stars in the coaching game at 33 years old.

Dreiling has spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator at New Mexico State.

In Dreiling’s first season in Las Cruces in 2022, he inherited a defense that ranked 127th in total defense among FBS schools. That year’s Aggies squad went onto to be the most improved defensive unit in college football, climbing 98 spots to 29th in the nation.

In 2023, Dreiling’s defense was one of the best units in the nation once again. NMSU’s defense allowed 22.8 points per game, which was ranked 44th in the country at the NCAA DI FBS level. NMSU’s defense was also the second best in scoring defense in Conference USA, just below Liberty, who averaged 21.1 points per game, in 13 games played this season, two less games than NMSU played last season.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 17 Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team pulled away from the Seward County Saints in the second half en route to a 76-42 win at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons improve their record to 13-2 overall and 8-1 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC).&nbsp;

Hutchinson led Seward County, 30-20 at halftime after the Saints made a run late in the half to cut the Blue Dragon deficit down.

The Blue Dragons dominated the second half, outscoring the Saints, 46-22.

HutchCC shot 57 percent from the floor, while holding the Saints to 28 percent. The Blue Dragons finished plus-23 on the glass, outrebounding Seward, 44-21.

Valentino Simon led the Blue Dragons with 20 points and six rebounds, while Kernan Bundy added 15 points off the bench. Dallas Whitney also contributed off the bench with 12 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Amir Whitlock led the Saints with 13 points, while Mathias M'Madi added nine.

Hutchinson will travel to Coffeyville to play the Red Ravens on Saturday afternoon at Nellis Hall with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on the flagship station for the Blue Dragons, KHUT-FM (102.9), as well as KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5).

🏀 MBB: No. 17 HutchCC dominates second half to down Seward

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team played its worst offensive game of the season, but still found a way to win, outlasting Seward County, 69-53 in the Sports Arena on Wednesday.

The win improved the Blue Dragons to 15-0 overall, 9-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC).

HutchCC shot a season-low 37 percent from the floor, including a 4-of-24 performance from the three-point line. The Blue Dragons countered the poor shooting by knocking down 13-of-20 from the free-throw stripe.

Monae Duffy led the Blue Dragons with 16 points, while also grabbing 13 rebounds to secure her third double-double of the season and 12th of her career. Journey Armstead also scored 16, while dishing off five assists. Akaysha Muggeridge and Kiki Smith both scored in double figures with 15 and 10, respectively.

The Blue Dragons led 11-9 after the first quarter, and continued its strong second quarter showing, outscoring the Saints, 22-11 in the period to lead 33-20 at halftime.

Seward County came out strong in the second half and outscored the Blue Dragons, 17-10 in the third frame to pull within 43-37 entering the fourth. Hutchinson built a 15-point lead in the third before the Saints pulled within three at one point.

HutchCC took advantage of 28 Seward County turnovers, scoring 25 points from the Saints' woes. The Blue Dragons also dominated in the paint, outscoring Seward, 42-24.

The Blue Dragons will travel to Coffeyville on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff against the Red Ravens inside of Nellis Hall. The game will be broadcasted on the flagship station for the Blue Dragons, KHUT-FM (102.9), as well as KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with pregame coverage starting at 1:45 p.m.

Sabrina graduated from Norfolk High School in 1994. &nbsp;She earned her CNA certification from Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp; She was a CNA at Pleasant View Home in Inman. &nbsp;Sabrina also worked as a corrections officer at Hutchinson Correctional Facility. &nbsp;She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting. She also loved watching her sons play sports and swore she was their biggest fan. She was a Denver Broncos fan and watched them every chance she got. She was a hard worker who didn’t know the word quit.

On June 17th, 2004, Sabrina married Paul Diaz.

Sabrina is survived by: her husband; sons: Jacob (Makayla) Ice of Buhler, Zachary Ice of Hutchinson, and Lucas Diaz of Hutchinson; mother: Beverly (David) Larson of Hutchinson; sisters: Chris Goodpasture of Great Bend and Katy Goodpasture of Hutchinson; and brother, Bucky Goodpasture of Utah. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by; her father; and sisters: Jennifer Duran and Juanita Goodpasture.

Now ranked No. 17 in the NJCAA, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team is back at the Sports Arena on Wednesday to square off for a Jayhawk Conference matchup against the Seward County Saints.

Tip-off between the Blue Dragons (12-2, 7-1 Jayhawk Conference) and Saints (3-11, 1-7 KJCCC) is set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hutchinson had its second-best shooting day of the season, hitting 52.4 percent of its shots, including 8 of 20 from 3-point range.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;had a team-high 16 points off the bench to lead four Blue Dragons in double figures.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons held Northwest Tech to an opponent-low 56 points. Leading by 11 points at halftime, the Blue Dragons outscored the Mavericks 47-25 in the second half. The 25 points allowed was the lowest scoring half the Dragons have allowed this season.

Since the start of conference play, the Blue Dragons have been one of the better defense teams in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson is allowing 74.0 points per game and 75.2 points in KJCCC contests. Over the past two games, Hutchinson is allowing just 58.0 points and 39.6 percent shooting.

Part of that defensive success is the fact that the Blue Dragons are forcing 23.1 turnovers per game, 20.2 turnovers in KJCCC play. The Blue Dragons lead the Jayhawk Conference and rank No. 1 in the NJCAA with 14.5 steals per game.

The 14-0 start, including last week's 73-54 victory last Wednesday at then-No. 3 Butler, helped the Blue Dragons vault five spots and into the NJCAA Top 10 for the first time in 14 months to No. 6.

Seward County (7-7, 3-5) will be playing its second-consecutive nationally ranked opponent. Last Saturday, the Saints lost 73-53 in Liberal to No. 14 Dodge City. The Saints started the second semester with a 71-63 win on Jan. 3 at Garden City.

The Saints are led by first-year head coach Will Marchino, who was a Seward County assistant for two seasons previous.

Wednesday's meeting will be the 102nd in series history with Hutchinson leading the overall series 51-50. The Blue Dragons won both games against Seward County last year, winning 82-76 at the Sports Arena and 69-54 in Liberal.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Martin Luther King Jr. Day events in Hutchinson are continuing this year, starting with the annual observance on the Sunday before at Stringer Fine Arts Center at 2 p.m. on Jan. 14.

"There are several choirs that always perform on the King Day holiday," said Hence Parson. "Badinage from Hutchinson Community College, Buhler High School and Hutchinson High School. We look forward to that. Aside from that, we have about six young people who are going to speak to the theme."

The theme this year is "It starts with me: Shifting the cultural climate through the study and practice of Kingian nonviolence."

"King was about nonviolence," Parson said. "I think that is important in these times, when you think about school shootings, when you think about domestic violence. It's time for us to really be serious about being nonviolent."

Then, on Monday, the community will come together for the Day of Service, starting with a brief program and breakfast at Stringer.

"Unity comes forth when you interact with people who might not look like you, think like you, come from the same places that you do," said City of Hutchinson Human Relations Officer Dave Sotelo. "Think about your group of friends, the close people that you hang out with, spend time with, that you go out and grab a beer or coffee or worship with. What do they look like? Where do they come from? If they look a whole lot like you and are a lot like you, I would ask, what does that say about you? It's about asking yourself, what are ways to meet different people, interact with different people and address some of those biases and racial tendencies that we have as we interact with people. That's what we're doing here. We're trying to bring people together to connect, to have breakfast together to work together, to interact with one another, to learn about one another and build community."

MLK Jr. events coming up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. 

The Red Cross blood supply has fallen to critically low levels across the country, and blood donors are urged to make a donation appointment to help alleviate the shortage and help ensure lifesaving medical procedures are not put on hold.

Over the last 20 years, the number of people donating blood to the Red Cross has fallen by about 40%. When fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to blood donations – such as the nearly 7,000-unit shortfall in blood donations the Red Cross experienced between Christmas and New Year’s Day alone – can have a huge impact on the availability of blood products and dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion. 

Blood products are currently going to hospitals faster than blood donations are coming in, and in recent weeks, the Red Cross has had to limit distributions of type O blood products – among the most transfused blood types – to hospitals.

“One of the most distressing situations for a doctor is to have a hospital full of patients and an empty blood bank without any blood on the shelves. Doctors often can’t operate without blood available to make surgeries, medical procedures and treatments possible,” said Dr. Eric Gehrie, executive physician director for the Red Cross. “More challenges lie ahead as the potential for severe winter weather and seasonal illness may compound the dire blood supply situation. Donors of all types – especially those with type O blood and those giving platelets – are urged to give now.”

The Red Cross blood supply has fallen to critically low levels across the country, and blood donors are urged to make a donation appointment to help alleviate the shortage and help ensure lifesaving medical procedures are not put on hold.Over the last 20 years, the number of people donating blood to the Red Cross has fallen by about 40%. Red Cross: Blood desperately needed

Carolyn Sue Fleming, 82, of Hutchinson, died January 6, 2024, at Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson. She was born July 20, 1941, in Stark, KS, to Virgil and Doris (Boggs) Clements.

Carolyn graduated from Haviland Friends Academy in 1959, Friends Bible College in 1961, and Adela Hale Business College in 1980. She enjoyed a long career working for the State of Kansas in the field of job services. Carolyn was a long-time attender of Grace Bible Church.

On August 9, 1986, she married Leland A. Fleming, with whom she shared 37 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: her daughters, Dawnita Miller (Mike), Michelle Schneider (Adam), all of Hutchinson; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; siblings, Leon Clements of Rogers, AR, Kay Smith (Morris) of Haviland; sister-in-law, Paula Clements of Tecumseh, NE; and many extended family members.

Carolyn was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, Keith Clements; and sisters-in-law, Gladys Clements and Sharon Clements.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Elliott Chapel. Private family inurnment will take place in Haviland Community Cemetery.

Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Bible Church or Barclay College, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

The National Junior College Athletic Association released it's latest Top 25 poll for men's and women's basketball, and the HutchCC Blue Dragons were represented in each poll.

The HutchCC women (14-0, 8-0 KJCCC) moved up five spots from No. 11 to No. 6 in the first poll of 2024.

The No. 6 ranking is the highest for the Blue Dragons since Nov. 14, 2022 when Hutchinson was ranked No. 4.

The Blue Dragons defeated Cowley (72-47), No. 3 Butler (73-54) and Northwest Kansas Tech (92-44) since the last poll was released on Dec. 11, 2023.

The HutchCC men (12-2, 7-1) moved up four spots from No. 21 to No. 17.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons went 2-1 since the final poll of 2023 was released with a loss to then-No. 9 Cowley (83-70), and wins at No. 17 Butler (63-60) and against Northwest Kansas Tech (89-56).

Both Blue Dragon teams will host Seward on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., and the men at 7:30 p.m.

The No. 21-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team shot nearly 53 percent and held Northwest Tech to a conference-season low offensive output to roll to a 33-point Jayhawk Conference victory on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Five Blue Dragons scored in double figures as Hutchinson defeated Northwest Tech for the eighth-consecutive game after an 89-56 victory.

Hutchinson improved to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons play host to Seward County at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Sports Arena. Northwest Tech fell to 5-10 overall and 0-8 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Hutchinson shot 50 percent in the first half and built a 42-31 halftime lead. The Blue Dragons dominated the second half, outshooting the Mavericks 52.4-30.4 percent to outscore Northwest Tech 47-25.

For the game, the Blue Dragons shot 52.4 percent (33 of 63), hitting 8 of 20 from 3-point range and 15 of 22 from the free-throw line.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons held Northwest Tech 26 points under its 81.0 scoring average. Tech shot 38.3 percent (18 of 47), hitting 6 of 13 3-pointers and 14 of 21 from the foul line. Charles Fofanah had a game-high 22 points to lead Northwest Tech.

The Blue Dragons led 9-8 about 5 1/2 minutes into the game and took charge 15-4 run.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kobe_csmn">Kobe Smith</a>'s jumper with 10:06 to play in the half capped the run and gave the Dragons a 24-12 lead. Leading 27-21, the Dragons scored nine unanswered points over a stretch of 1:50 to lead 36-21 after a Holman layup.

Holding a 45-35 lead just a minute into the second half, the Blue Dragons scored nine unanswered points and led 54-35 after a J.P. Ricks layup with 16:34 to play. Leading by 17 points, two Simon free throws capped an 8-0 run to help Hutchinson build a 69-44 lead with 11:45 to play in the second half.

The Blue Dragons continued to stretch out the lead through the remainder of the game, building a game-high 36-point lead at 87-51.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons use dominant performance to roll by Mavs

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as the No. 11-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team extended its season-opening winning streak to 14 games on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Smith's fourth game of 25 or more points this season powered the Blue Dragons to a 92-44 Jayhawk Conference victory over Northwest Tech.

Now 14-0 to start the season, the Blue Dragons (8-0 in the KJCCC) tied the 2001-02 Blue Dragons for the eighth-best start in program history. Hutchinson plays host to Seward County at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Northwest Tech fell to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in league play.

Smith hit 9 of 15 overall shots and tied a season high with four 3-pointers on nine attempts to lead the Blue Dragons, who surpassed the 90-point mark for the first time since scoring 92 against Pratt on December 2. The freshman guard hit 7 of 10 shots, including three 3-pointers, in a 19-point first half that helped Hutchinson build a 48-21 halftime lead. Smith added three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;finished with 12 points and eight rebound. Jackson hit 6 of 8 shots.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to become the third Blue Dragon to score in double figures with 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Denison added seven rebounds.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;had eight points and nine rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/muggeridge_akaysha_rpaz">Akaysha Muggeridge</a>&nbsp;scored eight points and blocked a season-high two shots.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;had eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high three steals.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/norris_kahlen_azmu">Kahlen Norris</a>&nbsp;also scored eight points with a season-high four field goals.

The Blue Dragons shot 46.7 percent overall (35 of 37), hitting 8 of 27 from 3-point range and 14 of 20 from the free-throw line. The Blue Dragons out-rebounded Northwest Tech 50-37.

Serena Lee had 17 points to lead the Mavericks, who lost their ninth-straight game. Sy Crowley had nine points. The Mavericks were held to 22.6 percent shooting (14 of 62), going 6 of 34 from 3-point range and 10 of 12 from the foul line. The Mavericks turned the ball over 27 times, which led to a 31-7 advantage in points off turnovers for the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons started the game on a 10-0 run over the first 4:08 of the game. Leading 13-8, the Dragons tacked on a quick 8-0 run that was capped by two Denison free throws for a 21-9 lead with 2:13 to play. Hutchinson extended that run to 12-2 and led 25-10 after a Horyna transition layup with 1:21 to play. The Dragons shot 52.9 percent in the first quarter and led 27-15 after 10 minutes.

The Blue Dragons dominated the second quarter, outscoring Northwest Tech 21-6 – the six points allowed tied for the second fewest allowed by Hutchinson this season. The Blue Dragons led 31-17 and buried the Mavericks with a 13-0 run and held Tech scoreless for 5 minutes, 26 seconds. Duffy capped that run with a point-blank bucket with 2:48 left for a 44-17 lead. The Dragons led 48-21 at halftime.

The Blue Dragons' largest lead was the final margin of 48 points as Hutchinson closed the game with an 18-6 run over the final 7:18 of the game.

Northwest Tech fell to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in league play.Smith hit 9 of 15 overall shots and tied a season high with four 3-pointers on nine attempts to lead the Blue Dragons, who surpassed the 90-point mark for the first time since scoring 92 against Pratt on December 2. The freshman guard hit 7 of 10 shots, including three 3-pointers, in a 19-point first half that helped Hutchinson build a 48-21 halftime lead. The Blue Dragons started the second semester with a come-from-behind 63-60 victory on Wednesday at No. 17 Butler. Hutchinson trailed by nine points with 8:09 remaining in the second half and still trailed by five with 4:08 remaining. The Dragons fought back and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to complete the comeback, tying the largest deficit this season the Dragons had to rally for a victory.

Thomas had 21 points to lead the Blue Dragons against the Grizzlies. Dre Weathers had 10 points.

The victory kept the Blue Dragons right near the top of the Jayhawk Conference standings. Hutchinson trails first-place Cowley by 1.5 games. Cowley is 8-0 and Barton is second at 7-1. The Dragons are 6-1. Cowley delivered the only league losses to this point in the season to both the Blue Dragons and Cougars.

The Dragons continue to lead the KJCCC in team scoring offense at 89.5 points per game, but are much improved defensively allowing just 78.0 points in KJCCC Games.

Northwest Tech lost a tight road game, 82-78 at Dodge City, on Wednesday in its last game played. Taiden Conner had 19 points and Kyle Jones came off the bench to add 16 points to lead the Mavericks against the Conquistadors.

Saturday's game will be the 15th all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Northwest Tech. The Blue Dragons lead the all-time series 14-1 and have won the last seven meetings with the Mavericks.

Last season the Blue Dragons were 3-0 against Northwest Tech. The Blue Dragons held on for a 90-87 win at Goodland last season, and then dominated the two games played at the Sports Arena. The Dragons won the regular-season meeting at the Sports Arena 115-74 and cruised to a 102-79 Region VI Tournament opening-round victory last March.

Saturday's game opens a stretch of 5 home games in the next 6 for the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson play host to Seward County on Wednesday. Then after a road trip to Coffeyville next Wednesday, the Blue Dragons play three-straight home games against Barton, Garden City and Dodge City.

The Maverick's last victory came on November 12 at home in a 79-59 victory over Otero College.Freshman Serena Lee is Northwest Tech's leading scorer at 17.2 points per game, which ranks fifth in the Jayhawk Conference. Lee comes off a 31-point, six 3-pointer performance against Dodge City on Wednesday.Last season, the Blue Dragons swept Northwest Tech, winning 81-52 in Goodland and 73-63 at the Sports Arena.
