AMARILLO, Texas (July 29, 2025)&mdash;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/walker-jenkins-805805?affiliateId=mlbcom-milb">Walker Jenkins</a>finishes a triple shy of the cycle as the Wichita Wind Surge fell 10-8 in walk-off fashion to the Amarillo Sod Poodles at HODGETOWN. The loss in the longest nine-inning game of the year at three hours and 31 minutes snaps an eight-game win streak on Tuesday for the Wind Surge.
Amarillo was the first team on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch and a groundout. Those would be the lone runs given up under Wichita starter <a href="https://www.milb.com/player/christian-macleod-681306">Christian MacLeod</a>, who went four innings and gave up three hits and four walks to go along with three strikeouts.
Jenkins and <a href="https://www.milb.com/player/gabriel-gonzalez-694224">Gabby Gonzalez</a> hit back-to-back solo home runs to right center and deep left to tie the game with two outs in the top of the third. <a href="https://www.milb.com/player/kyler-fedko-693459">Kyler Fedko</a> put the Wind Surge ahead 3-2 on an RBI double to the center field wall.

After the stretch, the Sod Poodles put up four runs on four hits, the major one being a two-run knock to center by Ryan Waldschmidt.
Gavin Conticello reached on a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth before scoring on an RBI double to left by Jose Fernandez. Ivan Melendez lifted a game-winning two-run home run out to left field to complete the comeback for Amarillo with a 10-8 win.
<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/joel-cesar-666802">Joel Cesar</a> took the loss and is now 3-4 on the season. Over two-thirds of an inning in the ninth, he surrendered three earned runs on two hits and a walk.

Seth Lugo (8-5) won his first start since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-seth-lugo-extension-dc4a058fb1eb5c167e719a246baee7bf">agreeing Monday to a $46 million, two-year contract</a>&nbsp;for 2026 and ’27. Pasquantino finished with three hits and two RBIs.

Bobby Witt Jr. also drove in two runs for the Royals, and Jonathan India had a two-run double.

Marcell Ozuna homered and knocked in three for Atlanta, and Austin Riley also went deep. But right-hander Erick Fedde (3-11) fell behind 4-0 after two innings in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/atlanta-braves-grant-holmes-9f9e3897c5ddc25bed63368154a7483c">his Braves debut.</a>

Acuña left in the sixth inning after chasing down a ball in right field. He will be placed on the 10-day injured list, the Braves said.

Kansas City also brought up right-hander Thomas Hatch from Triple-A Omaha before its game against Atlanta.

Hill allowed three runs — one earned — and six hits in five innings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-cubs-rich-hill-oldest-e09c2d43a7a83309e1cf9696c3e80d71">in a 6-0 loss</a>&nbsp;at the Chicago Cubs a week ago. ⚾Kansas City Royals designate 45-year-old LHP Rich Hill for assignment

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Wide receiver Marquise Brown was among several Kansas City Chiefs who left practice with an injury Tuesday, when the nearly 2 1/2-hour workout was conducted in temperatures that produced a triple-digit heat index by its conclusion.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Brown, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, had hurt his ankle early in the practice. Brown was sitting up while he was driven in a cart from the practice fields to the locker room.

“I haven't seen him yet but they took him up. I don't think it's too bad but we'll see,” Reid said.

“Hollywood” Brown was among several wide receivers who got dinged up. Second-year standout Xavier Worthy “banged his head,” Reid said, but returned to the practice field. And 2022 second-round pick Skyy Moore, who at this point appears to be a longshot to make the roster out of training camp, also left practice with a hamstring injury.

Others who missed time included fifth-round pick Jeffrey Bassa (ankle sprain), tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring), linebacker Cooper McDonald (illness) and defensive backs Deon Bush (hamstring), Eric Scott Jr. (hamstring) and Darius Rush (hamstring).

Kristian Fulton, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal in free agency, remains on the PUP list with a knee issue.

🏈Chiefs' Marquise Brown among several players injured in sweltering training camp practice

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Nearly six years ago, when the Kansas City Chiefs were just beginning their rise to prominence, Chris Jones tweaked a muscle in practice bad enough that coach Andy Reid made the difficult decision to hold him out of a playoff game against Houston.

Jones wanted to play. In fact, he tried to push through the injury in warmups. But Reid was steadfast, and the Chiefs didn't need him in the end. After spotting the Texans a 24-0 lead, Patrick Mahomes &amp; Co. caught fire, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/1129919fad337ff1d482dc02cb5a4059">Kansas City rolled to a 51-31 victory</a>. And when Jones returned the next week,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/6dc66c81f740e1534e351b8250791c2f#:~:text=By%20DAVE%20SKRETTA,the%20Chiefs%20in%20Week%2010.">the Chiefs handily beat the Titans</a>&nbsp;for the AFC championship — two wins that ultimately propelled them to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-francisco-49ers-sports-general-super-bowl-football-ap-top-news-8f6178fbfa3844677b5fc374bc53b80f">their first Super Bowl title</a>&nbsp;in five decades.

It turns out the backstory to the injury explains a lot about why Jones, now&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-chris-jones-5f562ac65a27dda647fe94a39df9d7e9">a 31-year-old veteran</a>&nbsp;preparing for his 10th season in the league, has become a three-time All-Pro and one of the game's premier defensive players.

He's competitive. He's relentless. And he doesn't suffer fools gladly.

You see, in practice, hitting the quarterback is strictly verboten. It's why QBs usually wear a different-colored jersey, yellow in the case of Kansas City. Yet pulling back as a defender whose instincts are honed to bring down whomever has the ball can be a difficult challenge, even more so when it's Patrick Mahomes dancing around the pocket, almost as if he's mocking you.

“So we were in a battle,” Jones recalled, after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-training-camp-3bda8270013a5f3376dcf92b20644c4f">a recent training camp practice</a>&nbsp;in the brutal heat and humidity that seems to engulf Missouri Western State University this time of year, "and I had to show Pat that I can really catch you.

“I just chill,” — usually, Jones added— “because we have to stay 5 to 10 yards away from the quarterback. And it got serious one day, and I ended up pulling a (muscle). And I was like: ‘You know what, Pat? You got it.’”

Yes, the affable Jones had been so competitive that, even in a midweek practice against his own teammates, he managed to hurt himself before what to that point had been the most important game of a championship season.

“Now,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said, “we've got a special rule for Chris on that.”

The so-called Chris Rule is quite simple: Once he beats the offensive line in practice, he must stand there.

“Patrick does some crazy stuff back there. It gets very competitive,” Jones said, sounding downright exasperated. “You know you can't touch the quarterback, so the quarterback can stand and hold the ball for five or six seconds during the play.”

You can see how that could become annoying. Even infuriating.

Fortunately for Jones, there are no Chris Rules when games begin. And that is decidedly unfortunate for opposing QBs, who have become keenly aware of his game-wrecking ability. George Karlaftis had eight sacks last season, helping to earn him a four-year, $93 million deal a couple of weeks ago. Tershawn Wharton produced a career-best 6 1/2, which earned him a three-year, $30 million contract with Carolina.

“I've watched (Jones) over the years,” said Jerry Tillery, who signed with the Chiefs in the offseason to play alongside him, “and that's somebody at the top of our game who's doing it the best. To watch this guy work and to be with him — I think that type of player is somebody who can raise everybody's level.”

Jones acknowledged that his game has had to evolve over the years, especially the past six, since those days of trying to chase Mahomes around practice. He still is one of the strongest players in the league, capable of beating a woebegone offensive lineman with brute force, but he now has the priceless benefit of experience on his side.

His explosive athletic ability paired with some nuance and craft has made for quite a combination.

“I mean, he’s as dynamic as they come,” Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady said.

On the superheated training fields of Missouri Western, about an hour's drive north of Arrowhead Stadium, that dynamism can still last only as long as it takes Jones to beat the man in front of him — sometimes a fraction of a second. Then, according to the Chris Rules, Jones will dutifully stand up and watch the rest of the play unfold.

“Over time,” Jones said, “you get to see the younger guys are faster. You're a little slower. You don't move the same. So you have to cherish these moments. Cherish these individuals you get to battle with every day, and enjoy the practice.”

As the Royals celebrated the stability that&nbsp;extending Seth Lugo&nbsp;brings to their rotation now and in the future, they were also balancing the news that they’ll be without another starter for the rest of 2025.&nbsp;

Kris Bubic&nbsp;will miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from a left rotator cuff strain, the Royals announced on Monday. Bubic was&nbsp;placed on the 15-day injured list&nbsp;on Sunday following his 2 2/3-inning start against the Guardians on Saturday night, an outing in which he walked four consecutive batters to start the game and said afterward that “physically, something’s not right.”&nbsp;

The Royals do not believe Bubic’s injury will require surgery, but he does need extended rest. He’ll be shut down until at least October, but that timeline does give him a healthy offseason if everything stays on track and the further evaluation Bubic will receive in the coming days matches what he’s learned in the past 24 hours.&nbsp;

“It sucks,” Bubic said. “I mean, especially coming off a fairly recent rehab experience not too long ago. So it is what it is. I mean, sometimes your body just says, ‘No.’ But kind of looking back, it’s still fairly fresh, but I can’t be mad about how the season went from an overall standpoint.”&nbsp;

Bubic, a&nbsp;first-time All-Star this year, ends his season with a 2.55 ERA across 20 starts and 116 1/3 innings. In his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, the lefty blossomed into one of the Royals’ best starters. He earned American League Pitcher of the Month honors in May with a 0.56 ERA and was sticking around in the AL Cy Young conversation, with his season ERA ranking fifth among AL starters at the time of his injury.&nbsp;

“It’s no fun to hear [about the injury] for us or for him,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “... I feel badly for Kris. This is two out of three years that he’s had an injury that ends his season. But he’s a competitor. He’s a guy that’s already going to start to think about how he can get back and be better.”&nbsp;

Bubic said after his start on Saturday that he had been managing some shoulder pain for a “good portion of the season.” But it took a turn for the worse during his five scoreless innings in Miami on July 20. He attributed the velocity drop to being sick earlier that weekend coming off the All-Star break.&nbsp;

Then on Saturday, he couldn’t command the ball and barely reached 90 mph with his fastball.&nbsp;

Regarding whether Bubic should have taken further precautions in the earlier part of the season, he said he “doesn’t regret anything of how I handled it earlier in the year.”&nbsp;

“I was bouncing back fine,” Bubic said. “Velo, command, all that stuff was stable and the results were good and the process was good. There were really no red flags in my mind. There were no red flags from anybody coming to me about anything. Not until essentially this last week, between Miami and the other day. That was when, ‘OK, you see the velo drop, you see the command all over the place.’ Those are some pretty obvious red flags.&nbsp;

“… We’re competitive athletes. We want to pitch. We want to be out there if we feel like we can pitch. Like I said, given the way most of the season had went, it’s hard to pull the plug on it. As long as it stayed manageable, which it was for a very long time, that was fine with me.”&nbsp;

Bubic knows how to attack a long rehab, and this figures to be much shorter than the grueling year-plus he spent recovering from elbow surgery. Still, it’s a devastating blow to the Royals’ rotation that already has two other starters from their Opening Day rotation on the IL in Cole Ragans (left rotator cuff strain) and Michael Lorenzen (left oblique strain).&nbsp;

Both are expected to pitch again this season, Lorenzen closer than Ragans, whose rotator cuff strain is in a “different spot,” than Bubic’s and therefore not as severe. Ragans has been playing catch and is a week or two away from his first bullpen, so he still has a bit to go before he gets back into games.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Monarchs suffered the first loss of the NBC World Series on Monday evening falling to the Seattle Studs 9-5.  

Despite collecting 10 hits to the Studs’ 11, the Monarchs struggled to capitalize on their opportunities. Dylan Bell led Hutchinson with two RBIs, while Jaden Gustafson, Jake Gutierrez, and JJ Spafford each notched two hits in the loss. 

Pryce Bender started on the mound for the Monarchs, surrendering six runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings. Kyle Holzer impressed in relief, striking out five over two innings while allowing just two hits and one unearned run. 

Seattle first baseman Jackson Copeland delivered a standout performance at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, a run scored, and a walk, earning Player of the Game honors. Catcher Kai Halstead also made a significant impact, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a solo home run, an RBI, and a walk. 

With the win, the Studs remain undefeated in tournament play and will carry momentum into the knockout stage. Hutchinson, now 2-1 in pool play, will look to regroup moving forward.

Pairings for the knockout stage will be announced following today's action.&nbsp;

The Seattle Blackfins have clinched the final qualification place in Pool A, after defeating MVP Oklahoma 7-5. Paxton Bigby and Brody Blum led the way for the Blackfins, each driving in two runs. Brayden Larson was 2-3 for the Blackfins also driving in a run.   

In a game that came down to the wire, Stars third baseman Joe Anderson drove in two runs on a grounder through the gap, giving the Stars an 11-10 walk off victory over the Dodge City A’s. 

In a battle for the top seed in Pool A, the Hays Larks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back, winning 7-4. Taber Stokes continued his great play with a double in the 5th for the Larks, while Lane Sparks and Trent Baker both swiped two bases. Nolan Wilson got the start for the Larks, throwing 5 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run, walking 5 batters, and striking out 3.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr., Marcell Ozuna and Austin Riley homered as the Atlanta Braves snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who equaled a club record by walking 14 batters Monday night.

It was the fourth time the Royals walked 14 and the first since 2006.

Acuña hit a two-run homer, his 14th, in the third and an inning later Ozuna added another two-run shot, also his 14th. Riley hit a solo homer, his 15th, in the seventh — and his three-run double in the eighth made it 9-3.

Spencer Strider (5-8) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Raisel Iglesias squelched a Royals rally in the ninth for his 12th save.

Six of Kansas City's walks were issued by Rich Hill (0-2), who went four innings and gave up four runs and four hits. It was the second start of 2025 for the 45-year-old Hill after making his season debut with the Royals last Tuesday. It was also Hill’s 250th career start and 388th appearance in his 21st season.

Randal Grichuk hit his eighth homer, his first with the Royals since being acquired from Arizona on Saturday. Bobby Witt Jr. hit two doubles and leads the majors with 36. Maikel Garcia had two doubles among his three hits.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;&ndash; Ten home games at Bramlage Coliseum, including power conference matchups with California and Seton Hall, highlight the non-conference schedule for fourth-year coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/jerome-tang/2683" rel="smarttag" rev="2683">Jerome Tang</a></dfn>&nbsp;and his Kansas State men's basketball program announced on Monday afternoon (July 28). Season tickets for the 2025-26 season went on sale June 10 with a variety of ticket options. Fans can purchase tickets by calling toll free at (800) 221.CATS (2287) and/or online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kstatesports.com/tickets">www.kstatesports.com/tickets</a>. In addition to its 10 home games, K-State will play locally at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Thursday-Friday, Nov. 20-21 in the 25th annual Hall of Fame Classic. The Wildcats will open against NCAA Tournament participant Mississippi State at 8:30 p.m., CT on Nov. 20 before facing either Nebraska or New Mexico on Nov. 21. Tickets for the event go on sale on Sept. 3. K-State will open its 122nd season of men's basketball with the second of five straight home games, as the Wildcats face first-time opponent UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Nov. 4. The contest with the Spartans is followed by matchups against Bellarmine on Saturday, Nov. 8, California on Thursday, Nov. 13 and Tulsa on Monday, Nov. 17. The season-opening homestand will begin on Friday, Oct. 31 with an exhibition against Newman. In all, the Wildcats will play 19 home games in 2025-26, including visits by NCAA Tournament participants Baylor, BYU, Iowa State and Kansas. Aside from the Hall of Fame Classic, the Wildcats will play a pair of road non-conference games with a trip to Indiana on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and the start of a home-and-home series with Creighton on Saturday, Dec. 13 at CHI Health Center Omaha. The Bluejays are expected to return to Bramlage Coliseum during the 2026-27 season. This will be the first meeting with the Hoosiers since 1998 and the first in Bloomington since 1985. K-State will also start a home-and-home series with Seton Hall on Saturday, Dec. 6. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 1940. K-State finished the 2024-25 season with a 16-17 record, including a tie for ninth in the Big 12 with a 9-11 mark. Among the Wildcats' 16 victories were five over Top 25 teams, including No. 3 Iowa State on the road. The team has won 61 games in head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/jerome-tang/2683" rel="smarttag" rev="2683">Jerome Tang</a></dfn>'s&nbsp;tenure, including two postseason appearances. 🏈 KU lands 7 on Shrine Bowl 1000 Preseason Watch List

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erika Barnes claimed the Hutchinson Women’s Golf Association City Championship title Sunday, firing a personal-best 79 to win the Match Play championship flight at Carey Park Golf Course.

Barnes entered the eight-player field as the No. 2 seed and battled through three rounds to secure the trophy. She edged the seventh seed 1 up in a 20-hole match Friday, cruised past the sixth seed 5 and 4 in Saturday’s semifinals and capped her run with a 2-and-1 victory over the top seed in Sunday’s final.

In the First Flight, fifth-seeded Peggy Dickinson put together an impressive weekend, defeating the fourth seed 6 and 4 in Friday’s opening round. She followed with a 3-and-2 win over the top seed Saturday before dispatching the seventh seed 5 and 4 in Sunday’s championship match.

Joan Smith, the No. 3 seed, captured the Second Flight title. She opened with a 4-and-3 win over the sixth seed Friday, then upset the second seed 4 and 2 on Saturday. Smith sealed the flight championship with a 1-up victory in 19 holes over the top seed on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;&ndash; MIAA head football coaches selected defending MIAA Champion Central Oklahoma to finish at the top of the league&rsquo;s standings while media representatives tabbed Pittsburg State as the MIAA favorite in the 2025 season. MIAA coaches tabbed the Bronchos as their favorite to take home the 2025 crown with seven first-place votes in the coaches&rsquo; preseason poll. The Bronchos finished second in the media preseason poll despite collecting the most first-place selections with 18. The Gorillas tabbed the top spot in the media preseason poll and second in the MIAA coaches poll with three first-place votes. Fort Hays State claimed the No. 3 spot and Central Missouri finished fourth in both of the polls. Central Oklahoma won its first MIAA title in the 2024 season, posting a 9-1 record in league play. It was the first league championship since the Bronchos joined the MIAA in 2012. Central Oklahoma was one of two MIAA teams to advance to the 2024 NCAA Division II football playoffs. The Bronchos beat Ouachita Baptist 38-31 at home in overtime in the first round of the NCAA playoffs before falling to the eventual NCAA Division II national champion Ferris State on the road in the second round. Pittsburg State was the league&rsquo;s runner-up in the 2024 season with an MIAA record of 7-2 and 8-3 overall. The Gorillas also advanced to the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, where they suffered a 48-3 loss to Harding. The Mules and Tigers both finished 6-3 against MIAA opponents last season. Fort Hays State went 8-3 overall while Central Missouri posted an overall record of 9-3 and was the only MIAA team to play in a postseason bowl game. The MIAA welcomes two new head coaches in the 2025 season: Zach Watkins at Washburn and John McMenamin at Northwest Missouri. First-year head coach of the Ichabods, Zach Watkins, is a former All-American and MIAA Freshman of the Year. Watkins began his coaching career at Northwest Missouri and Fort Hays State before returning to his alma mater, where he&rsquo;s been a member of Washburn&rsquo;s coaching staff for 11 seasons. New Bearcat head coach John McMenamin also returned to his alma mater. Most recently the offensive co-coordinator/pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach at NCAA Division I Tulane University, McMenamin&rsquo;s first head coaching gig was at Wayne State in Nebraska from 2019-2021. McMenamin was a First Team All-MIAA quarterback in 2002 and set 27 Northwest and MIAA passing records during his time as a Bearcat. 🎧⚾ Royals win series; ⚾ Monarchs 2-0 in NBCWS; 🏀 Aftershocks in TBT semifinals

Fueled by their trademark depth and defensive grit, the AfterShocks earned a return trip to the semifinals of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) with a 74-68 win over Heartfire on Sunday at Koch Arena.

The AfterShocks, a team of Wichita State alumni, had four players score in double figures and used a decisive third-quarter surge to pull away from the tournament’s top-seeded team in the Kansas City Regional. Marcus Keene led the AfterShocks with 15 points, and Markis McDuffie added 13. Rashard Kelly contributed eight points and relentless energy on both ends of the floor.

Heartfire struggled from beyond the arc, finishing just 6-of-29 from three-point range under defensive pressure from the AfterShocks. Tevin Mack paced Heartfire with 18 points.

Wichita held a narrow 33-30 lead at halftime before breaking the game open in the third quarter. A key sequence came with the AfterShocks leading 39-35. We Are D3, comprised of former Division III athletes, has turned heads in this year's tournament, winning the Syracuse Regional and knocking off alumni teams from UConn and Syracuse. They edged Fail Harder 95-93 on Sunday.

The AfterShocks previously reached the semifinals in 2022 before falling 78-75 to Americana for Autism. That same year, they routed We Are D3 83-52 in the opening round.

A win Thursday would send the AfterShocks to the TBT championship game on August 3.

The right-hander and the Royals are finalizing a two-year, $46 million contract extension that includes a club/vesting option for 2028. The deal features a $3 million signing bonus, $20 million salaries in 2026 and 2027, and a $17 million option for 2028 that can vest at $20 million based on performance thresholds. Lugo is represented by the Ballengee Group.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — If you want someone for your next celebrity roast, Ichiro Suzuki could be your guy.

Mixing sneaky humor with heartfelt messages, the first Japanese-born player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame stole the show Sunday in Cooperstown.

Morning showers and gloomy skies delayed the ceremonies by an hour, but the moisture gave way to bright skies and warm temperatures. The sun seemed its brightest during Suzuki’s acceptance speech.

The outfielder was joined by pitcher CC Sabathia, also elected in his first year of eligibility, and closer Billy Wagner, who made it in his final try on the writers’ ballot. Suzuki fell one vote shy of being a unanimous selection and he took a jab at the unidentified sports writer who didn’t vote for him.

“Three thousand hits or 262 hits in one season are two achievements recognized by the writers. Well, all but one,” Suzuki said to roaring laughter.

“By the way, the offer for the writer to have dinner at my home has now expired,” he added, with emphasis on “expired” for good measure.

A pair of Era Committee selections rounded out the Class of 2025: Dave Parker, who earned the nickname Cobra during 20 big league seasons, and slugger Dick Allen. Parker died June 28, just a month before he was to be inducted.

An estimated 30,000 fans crowded onto the field adjacent to the Clark Sports Center, sun umbrellas and Japanese flags sprinkled around. Suzuki’s No. 51 was seemingly everywhere as fans, thousands of them Seattle Mariners boosters who made the trek from the Pacific Northwest, chanted “Ichiro” several times throughout the day. A sign that read “Thank You Ichiro! Forever a Legend” in English and Japanese summed up the admiration for Suzuki on his special day.

With 52 returning Hall of Famers on hand, Suzuki paid homage to his new baseball home in Cooperstown and his adoring fans by delivering his 18-minute speech in English. His humor, a surprise to many, delighted the crowd.

He threw shade at the Miami Marlins, the last stop of his professional career.

“Honestly, when you guys offered me a contract in 2015, I had never heard of your team,” Suzuki joked.

He kidded that he showed up at spring training every year with his arm “already in shape” just to hear Mariners broadcaster Rick Rizzs scream, “`Holy smokes! Another laser-beam throw from Ichiro!’”

He even took a moment for some tongue-in-cheek modesty.

“People often measure me by my records. Three thousand hits. Ten Gold Gloves. Ten seasons of 200 hits.

“Not bad, huh?” Suzuki said to more laughs.

He thanked his late agent Tony Anastasio for “getting me to America and for teaching me to love wine.”

But he also took time to get to the root of what made him extraordinary.

“Baseball is much more than just hitting, throwing and running. Baseball taught me to make valued decisions about what is important. It helped shape my view of life and the world. … The older I got, I realized the only way I could get to play the game I loved to the age of 45 at the highest level was to dedicate myself to it completely,” he said. “When fans use their precious time to see you play, you have a responsibility to perform for them whether you are winning by 10 or losing by 10.

“Baseball taught me what it means to be a professional and I believe that is the main reason I am here today. I could not have achieved the numbers without paying attention to the small details every single day consistently for all 19 seasons.”

Now he’s reached the pinnacle, overcoming doubters, one of whom said to him: “`Don’t embarrass the nation.’” He’s made his homeland proud.

“Going into America’s Baseball Hall of Fame was never my goal. I didn’t even know there was one. I visited Cooperstown for the first time in 2001, but being here today sure feels like a fantastic dream.”

Sabathia thanked “the great players sitting behind me, even Ichiro, who stole my Rookie of the Year award (in 2001).” He paid homage to Parker and spoke about Black culture in today’s game.

“It’s an extra honor to be a part of Dave’s Hall of Fame class. He was a father figure for a generation of Black stars. In the ’80s and early ‘90s when I first started watching baseball and Dave Parker was crushing homers, the number of Black players in the major leagues was at its highest, about 18%. Me and my friends played the game because we saw those guys on TV and there was always somebody who looked like me in a baseball uniform.

“Baseball has always been a great game for Black athletes, but baseball culture has not always been great to Black people. I hope we’re starting to turn that around. I don’t want to be the final member of the Black aces, a Black pitcher to win 20 games. And I don’t want to be the final Black pitcher giving a Hall of Fame speech.”

Wagner urged young players to treat obstacles not as “roadblocks, but steppingstones.”

“I wasn’t the biggest player. I wasn’t supposed to be here. There were only seven full-time relievers in the Hall of Fame. Now, there are eight because I refused to give up or give in,” he said.

Suzuki received 393 of 394 votes (99.7%) from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Sabathia was picked on 342 ballots (86.8%) and Wagner on 325 (82.5%), which was 29 votes more than the 296 needed for the required 75%.

After arriving in the majors in 2001, Suzuki joined Fred Lynn (1975) as the only players to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season.

Suzuki was a two-time AL batting champion and 10-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, hitting .311 with 117 homers, 780 RBIs and 509 stolen bases with Seattle, the New York Yankees and Miami.

He is perhaps the best contact hitter ever, with 1,278 hits in Nippon Professional Baseball and 3,089 in MLB, including a season-record 262 in 2004. His combined total of 4,367 exceeds Pete Rose’s major league record of 4,256.

Sabathia, second to Suzuki in 2001 AL Rookie of the Year voting, was a six-time All-Star who won the 2007 AL Cy Young Award and a World Series title in 2009. He went 251-161 with a 3.74 ERA and 3,093 strikeouts, third among left-handers behind Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton, during 19 seasons with Cleveland, Milwaukee and the New York Yankees.

A seven-time All-Star, Wagner was 47-40 with a 2.31 ERA and 422 saves for Houston, Philadelphia, the New York Mets, Boston and Atlanta.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time.

Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field.

Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons.

After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday.

“We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. “But all three are kind of competing there.”

Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season.

“He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,” Reid said. “He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.”

Wichita takes five of six from Frisco in their first six-game series after the All-Star Break.
Cossetti crushed a three-run homer, his eighth of the year, off the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. The long ball marked the longest of the season hit by anyone at Equity Bank Park at 462 feet.

⚾ Cossetti's homers lift Wind Surge to win in series finale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Noah Cameron escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first before tossing five innings of three-hit ball, Maikel Garcia homered for the second time in three games, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 on Sunday.

Garcia finished with two RBIs, and Vinnie Pasquantino and Luke Maile also drove in runs, while the Kansas City bullpen allowed only Gabriel Arias' homer amid four hits over the final four innings.

Carlos Estévez worked around a leadoff double in the ninth for his 27th save.

Cameron (5-4) was stingy after the first, when Steven Kwan, Angel Martínez and José Ramírez began the game by loading the bases with nobody out. Cameron rebounded to retire David Fry, Carlos Santana and Arias, then allowed only two baserunners in the next four innings. He also struck out six in another dominant performance.

The 26-year-old left-hander from nearby St. Joseph, Missouri, lowered his ERA to 2.44 and has not lost a game since June 27.

Joey Cantillo (2-1) lasted only four innings for Cleveland on a hot, humid day in Kansas City. He allowed three runs and three hits and four walks while striking out four in his fifth start since joining the Guardians' rotation.

Cantillo had twice faced Kansas City in relief this season, retiring all six he faced and striking out four of them.

The fruitless first proved to be pivotal for Cleveland, when Fry flied out to right, Santana struck out and Arias grounded out to end the inning. Kansas City proceeded to coax across two runs in the bottom half and never trailed.

The Royals won despite going 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

The Guardians return home to face Colorado on Monday night with RHP Slade Cecconi (5-4, 3.76 ERA) starting the opener. The Royals welcome the Braves on Monday night with LHP Rich Hill (0-1, 1.80) on the mound first for the three-game series.

WICHITA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs continued their dominant run through pool play at the 91st annual NBC World Series with a 10-0 shutout victory over the Dodge City A’s Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

Right-hander Bradyn McClure turned in a stellar performance on the mound for the Monarchs (29-7), tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just one hit, striking out seven and issuing no walks.

Hutchinson broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. Joey Senstock laced an RBI double down the left-field line, and Dylan Bell followed with a single to center to make it 2-0.

The Monarchs pulled away with consistent offense throughout the afternoon, collecting 12 hits as a team. Jake Gutierrez drove in a team-high three runs, going 1-for-3. Drew Bugner led the Monarchs at the plate, finishing 3-for-3. Jake Knox, Tyson Vassart, and Jaden Gustafson each had multi-hit games.

Knox also anchored a flawless defensive effort with a team-high eight putouts as Hutchinson did not commit an error.

Copper Tannehill took the loss for Dodge City, giving up five runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking three.
