HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Baseball Association is hosting a baseball clinic for coaches on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hacks at 1228 North Halstead in Hutchinson.

⚾ Baseball Clinic coming up Sunday

MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team scored 12 runs in its final two at-bats Thursday to earn a run-rule victory in Game 1 of a three-game series with Rose State on Friday.

Three different Hutchinson players drove in three or more runs each as the Blue Dragons pulled away to defeat the Raiders 15-2 in eight innings at Rose State.

The Blue Dragons improved to 6-0 to start the season, the first 6-0 start since 2006. Rose State fell to 6-7. Games 2 and 3 of the series will be Saturday at Noon and 2:30 p.m. in Midwest City.

With only six hits through six innings, the Blue Dragons racked up nine of their 15-total hits in the final two innings.

Kael Babin, Luis Pimental-Guerrero and Blake Bradford had three hits each to lead the Blue Dragons.

Babin was 3 for 5 with a triple from the leadoff spot. He scored three runs and drove in a career-best three runs. Pimental-Guerrero was 3 for 5 with three RBIS. Braford was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs.

Maher was 2 for 5 with a double, triple and four runs batted in. Colin Cymbalista went 2 for 5 with a season-high four RBIs.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 10 stolen bases on Friday, which is the third most in a single game in Blue Dragon history. Jordan Tucker had a game-high three steals. Babin and Cymbalista had two each. Bradford, Cooper Wesslund and Tyson Vassart also had stolen bases.

This is the second time this season the Blue Dragons have had at least eight steals in a game.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Roses State 15-5 and the Raiders committed four errors.

Starting pitcher Ethan Giesbrecht (1-0) earned his first win of the season with five strong innings. He allowed five hits and two runs (one earned run) with five strikeouts and a walk. Cole Toureau tossed three hitless innings for his second save of the season. Toureau struck out three and walked two.

Leading only 3-2 after six innings, the Blue Dragons scored four runs in the seventh inning and eight runs in the eighth inning to bring the game to the brink of a rule-run ending.

⚾ Blue Dragons take Game 1 at Rose State

At halftime of Saturday's Hutchinson-Butler men's basketball game, the Blue Dragon Quarterback Club Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will be enshrined.

The Hall of Fame welcomes three new members this year in Jamie Patrick (women's basketball), Kadeem Allen (men's basketball) and Kyle Simonds (baseball).

Unfortunately, only Patrick will be able to attend the ceremony. Allen is currently playing professionally in Italy and Simonds is the pitching coach for Sam Houston State University, which is opening the 2024 season this weekend against Oklahoma State.

KADEEM ALLEN - Men's Basketball 2012-2014Allen was a two-time NJCAA All-American, two-time NABC All-American and two-time Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year. In 2014, Allen was named the NJCAA and NABC National Player of the Year.

Allen ranked third on the Blue Dragon career scoring list with 1,425 points; behind Roy "Pooh" Hairston (1,687) and Tyrone Jones (1,461). He was the 13th member of the Blue Dragon 1,000-point club.

Allen also ranked fifth first in career free throws (476), career free-throw attempts (592), second in career assists (324), second in career steals (157), tied for third in career scoring average (21.6 points per game) and fifth in career made field goals (271).

Allen led the 2013 Blue Dragons to the program's first Region VI Tournament championship since 1997 and led an injury-ravaged 2014 Hutchinson team to the Region VI Tournament championship game.As a freshman, Allen's Blue Dragon rankings are sixth in scoring (571), fifth in scoring average (17.3 points per game), 11th in made field goals (190), second in made free throws (160), eighth in assists (130) and second in steals (81).

After Hutchinson, Allen played at the University of Arizona. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA Draft. He also played for the New York Knicks as well as internationally in his pro career.

JAMIE PATRICK - Women's Basketball 2013-2014Patrick concluded her Blue Dragon career as the program's all-time and single-season scoring leader (now No. 3 on the scoring list). Patrick and her 2014 sophomore teammates finished their careers with a 71-3 record and finished of third place and national runner-up in two trips to the NJCAA Tournament.

She was a third-team NJCAA All-American in 2014 as well as a Jayhawk Conference first-team All-Conference player. She was a second-team all-Jayhawk Conference player as a freshman in 2013.

A 5-10 guard from Hutchinson Central Christian, Patrick as the 2013-14 Lady Dragons' leading scorer averaging 17.4 points per game (seventh best in team history for a single season). Patrick totaled a record 626 points as a sophomore, shooting 52.7 percent from the field overall, 38.2 percent from 3-point range and 79.5 percent from the free-throw line. Patrick also averaged 5.8 rebounds and had 84 assists, 67 steals and 16 blocked shots.

Named to the NJCAA Tournament All-Tournament team, the two-time all-Jayhawk West performer was named the conference's Player of the Week twice. Patrick earned one NJCAA National player of the week honor in 2014.

Her 1,098 career points surpassed Heather Robben's career record total this season. Patrick also ranked second in made field goals (397), field-goal attempts (763), overall field-goal percentage (52.0 percent), sixth in career 3-pointers (132), third in career 3-point attempts (332), fourth in 3-point percentage (39.8 percent) and fifth in career free throws (79.3 percent). Patrick finished with 404 rebounds, 170 assists, 119 steals and 41 blocked shots.

Patrick went onto play at Colorado State and later was a Blue Dragon assistant women's basketball coach.

KYLE SIMONDS - Baseball 2013-2014Simonds was a two-year starting pitcher for the Blue Dragons in 2013 and 2014. His sophomore season in 2014 was one of the best seasons in program history.

Simonds was named the 2014 NJCAA National Pitcher of the Year as well as the Jayhawk West Pitcher of the Year. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound sophomore right-handed starting pitcher from Grand Island, Nebraska, was also first-team All-Jayhawk West and All-Region VI honors being named the Region VI Gold Glove winner as a pitcher.

Simonds finished the 2014 season as the national leader in pitching wins posting a 13-0 record in 13 starts. He becomes 11th Blue Dragon starting pitcher to post an undefeated season (record of 5-0 or better). He set a team season record for wins and best start to a season by a starting pitcher.

The Blue Dragon ace finished with a season earned-run average of 2.20. He set team records for strikeouts in a season with 103 (sixth in the NJCAA) and tied team season records for complete games (9) and shutouts (3). Simonds was second in the nation in complete games and fourth in the nation in shutouts.

In a team season-record 94 innings pitched, Simonds allowed just 75 hits, 32 runs, 23 earned runs and walked just 12. Opponents hit just .210 against Simonds in 2014.

Simonds had six games of 10 or more strikeout, including a career-best 13 against Allen in Game 1 of the Region VI Tournament opening-round series at Hobart-Detter Field.

The future Texas A&amp;M pitcher finished his Blue Dragon career with a 16-4 record and a 3.02 earned-run average. He is tied for fourth with Craig Reed (1999-2000) and Lewick (2009-10) for fourth on the career wins list. His ERA is 13th best in team history.

He threw 128 career innings (ranks seventh on HutchCC's career list). His 123 career strikeouts rank sixth best in Hutchinson history. His 10 complete games rank No. 5 on the career list and his three shutouts tie for fourth best in a career.

After a standout two-year career at Texas A&amp;M, which included a no-hitter against Vanderbilt, Simonds was a 14th-round draft pick of the Washington Nationals in 2016.

HutchCC Quarterback Club Hall of Fame class to be inducted Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — &nbsp;The Hutchinson High Salthawk basketball teams both earned big victories over the Campus Colts on Friday in front a a huge crowd at the Salthawk Activity Center.

The Salthawk girls bounced back from a tough loss to Maize South on Tuesday to defeat the winless Campus Colts 58-32 while the Hutch High boys had to fight and claw their way back into the game after trailing 33-24 at the half to win, 69-62.&nbsp;

Both wins kept the Salthawk hopes alive to host at least one home court game when sub-state playoffs start on Feb. 27.&nbsp;

Hutch High fell behind early to the Colts but a strong final four minute run had the Salthawks on top 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 33 -18 at the half. 

The Salthawks had another strong third quarter with Kaia Smith scoring eight of her 15 points in the third perior.

Besides Smith's 15, Grace Posch had 15, Rechel Tomac added 11. Azariah Dawes seven, four each for Kolbie Craft and Ava Krone and Lily Rodriguez added two.

Campus was paced by Addison Wood with 10 points, Kenzie Lever came off the bench to score eight, Aliah Sanchez six and Madilyn Harris added five along with Emilyh Dedeau five.

Hutch High (11-7) travels to Derby (14-3) Tuesday while Campus visits Maize South.

Hutch High rode the hot hand of Tai Clark's 15 points to place four Salthawks in double figures to rally after trailing at the half by nine points 33-24 to win over the Colts 69-62.

Hutch totally turned things around in the 3rd quarter with Clark scoring nine of his 15 in the quarter along with Terrell King adding five. &nbsp;King was saddled with two early game fouls and sat for much of the first half.

It tood a great defensive effort by the Salthawks in the second half to off set Campus start and Drake University commit Andrell Burton Jr. who put on one heck of a show scoring 33 points on the night. 19 in the second half alone, but Burton was all that Campus had in the third quarter when Hutch made their run to lead 50-47 going into the final period.

Hutch was paced with Clark's 15 followed by Jax Heneha, Terrell King and Devon Spiller all with 11 points each. Jay Lewis added nine, Taishaun Govain six, plus a huge offensive board and save late that allowed the Salthawks another possession after a missed free throw,. Julian Smith added four and Daylee VanSycle two.

Campus was led by Burton's 33, nine points each by Kaason Thomas and Landon Brown, Jacob Weber seven, Drake McPherson two and Hagin Warkins two rounded out the Campus scoring.

Hutch High, now 12-6 travel to Derby on Tuesday while Campus (11-7) visits Maize South.

Hutchinson closes out the regular season on the road at Derby and Newton in the upcoming week. sub-state assignments will be announced by KSHSAA on Feb. 24. The Salthawks are still hoping for a home court game on Feb. 27.

Woods was coping with flu-like symptoms and was dehydrated. He was treated with IV fluids and was doing better. Woods was 1-over par for the round and projected just outside the cut when he asked for a cart and was driven off the course. Later, a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance and ladder truck were parked outside the clubhouse. PGA Tour officials said the paramedics delivered IV bags.

NFL suspends Raiders backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo for violating PEDs policy

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been suspended by the NFL for the first two games of next season for violating the performance-enhancing drugs policy of the league and NFL Players Association. ESPN also reported the Raiders are expected to release Garoppolo next month before an $11.25 million roster bonus kicks in. Garoppolo's days in Las Vegas appeared over at midseason when then-interim coach Antonio Pierce replaced him with rookie Aidan O'Connell for the rest of the season. Pierce became the Raiders' full-time coach last month and the Raiders also hired Tom Telesco as their general manager.

(AP) — After a dismal showing in time trials for Sunday's season-opening Daytona 500, the Toyota camp roared back and swept the two 150-mile qualifying races that set the field for "The Great American Race." The wins by Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell marked the first sweep of the Daytona qualifying races for Toyota since 2014 and have given the automaker hope of a fourth Daytona 500 win. He actually had a 4. It's the first time in 263 starts on the PGA Tour that Spieth has been disqualified. That leaves 51 players for the weekend at Riviera. This signature event had a 36-hole cut to top 50 and ties and anyone within 10 shots of the lead. Spieth would have been 10 shots behind. In a post on X, Spieth owned up to the mistake, saying he takes "full responsibility."

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn star Paige Bueckers and coach Geno Auriemma both say they will be back at the school next season. A senior academically, Bueckers made the announcement during senior night ceremonies Friday following the team's 85-44 win over Georgetown. Telling the crowd she wanted to "address the elephant in the room," Bueckers said, "this will not be my last senior night." Auriemma also ended any speculation that he might retire, saying he too would be back for at least one more year. Flyers, Rangers, Devils test the ice at MetLife Stadium in practices for Stadium Series games

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Things seemed to be very relaxed as the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils took turns testing the ice on the recently installed rink at MetLife Stadium in preparation for two big games in the NHL's Stadium Series this weekend. Instead of loosening up for the workouts, each of the teams skated onto the ice and gathered for team photos. The practices were a little different. The Flyers, who had arrived after playing a game in Toronto on Thursday night, seemed to be stretching their legs and getting used to the ice a day before facing the Devils on Saturday night.

'Malcolm in the Middle' star Frankie Muniz back at Daytona and rising up the NASCAR racing ladder

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Actor Frankie Muniz will try to make his Xfinity Series debut in the No. 35 Ford for Joey Gase Racing at Daytona International Speedway. Muniz finished fourth in the entry-level ARCA Series last year and gained enough confidence and respect to start climbing the NASCAR ladder. The deal to move up came together last week and has been less than ideal for the "Malcolm in the Middle" star. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. --&nbsp;Wichita State poured on 18 runs and got a strong start from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/caden-favors/7628">Caden Favors</a>&nbsp;to roll past Little Rock 18-5 in the 2024 season opener at Gary Hogan Field.

The win is the first in the tenure of first-year head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/brian-green/1158">Brian Green</a>&nbsp;and snaps WSU's five-game losing skid in season openers dating back to a win in 2018 against McNeese. The 18 runs are the most Wichita State has scored in a season opener since 1991, when the Shockers beat Saint Louis, 28-4.

The Shockers (1-0) battered around the nation's 2023 ERA leader in Little Rock starter Jackson Wells (0-1), knocking the righty out of the game with seven runs in just 2.0-plus innings of work.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/ryan-callahan/7594">Ryan Callahan</a>&nbsp;doubled home the first run of the season in the top of the first when&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jordan-rogers/7538">Jordan Rogers</a>&nbsp;was obstructed trying to score from first base and one batter later&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mauricio-millan/7532">Mauricio Millan</a>&nbsp;doubled the advantage with an RBI single. Rogers, who had just one career home run in two previous seasons at Wichita State, blasted a three-run shot to left in the second to cap a two-out rally that swelled the lead to 5-0.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/seth-stroh/7543">Seth Stroh</a>&nbsp;chased Wells with a monstrous two-run homer in the third, a blast that was measured at 490 feet on Little Rock's in-stadium Trackman system.

Favors (1-0) pitched around trouble for five scoreless innings in his debut as Wichita State's Friday starter. The lefty struck out a career-best eight hitters while walking only one. He was tagged for four runs in the sixth but still worked a career-high 5.2 innings to pick up the win.

The Wichita State offense continued the barrage against a parade of Little Rock relievers.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/7602">Josh Livingston</a>&nbsp;knocked in a run with an RBI ground out in the fourth that made it 8-0, then four more runs crossed in the sixth on a Callahan single, Livingston double,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jaden-gustafson/7525">Jaden Gustafson</a>&nbsp;single, and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/darnell-parker-jr-/7595">Darnell Parker Jr.</a>&nbsp;hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

After the Trojans (0-1) cut the WSU lead to 12-4, the Shockers immediately fired back courtesy of a three-run triple from Stroh, who capped his incredible afternoon in the ninth inning with a two-run single to finish with a career-high seven RBI. Parker Jr. plated the final run of the day with a sacrifice fly.

Rogers, Callahan and Millan all reached base five times for the Shockers, with Rogers scoring a career-high five runs. The Shockers drew nine walks as a team and were hit four times.

⚾ Shockers blast Little Rock in season opener

WICHITA, Kan. — The Buhler High School Crusaders bowling teams swept the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III and IV team titles on Thursday at Bowlero.&nbsp;

The Crusader girls bowled a 2986 series, over 500 pins more than second place Circle (2424). Buhler was led by senior Teigan Nielsen who bowled a 792 series, including a perfect 300 game.

Nielsen won the girls individual title by nearly 200 pins. Teammate Kenzie Welch finished in third place with a 547 series, while Sloane Adkins also placed in the top 10 with a 452 series, good enough for ninth place.

The Crusader boys edged out Andale by 64 pins to claim the title, 3197-3133.&nbsp;

Buhler junior Malachi Willis won the individual title with a 666 series, 17 more than Alex Wheat of McPherson. Rylan Klug (626, 6th) and Kohen Herrington (599, 7th) each finished in the top 10, as well for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders will now prepare for 4-1A regionals, which will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20 at The Alley in Hutchinson.

TISHOMINGO, Oklahoma – The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team lost its first games of the 2024 season on Thursday, dropping a doubleheader to NJCAA Division II power Murray State College.

Murray State rallied from three runs down to defeat the Blue Dragons 4-3 in Game 1. The Aggies jumped out to a five-run lead in Game 2vand held off a furious Hutchinson rally in a 6-4 win over the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson is now 6-2 to start the season. The Blue Dragons play North Central Texas in a doubleheader at Noon and 2 p.m. on Friday to close out the four-game road trip in Gainesville, Texas.

Sophomore third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/sandoval_olivia_ydnf">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;extended her consecutive game hitting streak to 24 games dating back to the final 16 games last season. Sandoval had a first-inning infield single in Game 1 to extended the streak to 23 games. She was 2 for 3 in the second game, getting a single in her third plate appearance to up the second-longest hitting streak in Blue Dragon history to 24 games.

Lake (1-1) was strong in her first career complete game. She worked six innings and allowed five hits, four runs, two earned runs with six strikeouts and only one walk. She retired 14 of the first 17 batters she faced.

Lozoya went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Hutchinson's six-hit attack. GAME 2 RECAP – Murray State 6, Hutchinson 4The Blue Dragons took a quick 1-0 lead on&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/mastin_alexis_jxjs">Alexis Mastin</a>'s sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. Murray State took charge with three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the fourth to build a 6-1 lead.

Hutchinson climbed back in the game with a three-run fifth inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/lies_korri_k1mj">Korri Lies</a>&nbsp;started the inning with a bases-loaded RBI single. Lozoya had an RBI single to left and Sandoval drew a bases-loaded walk to pull within 6-4.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Murray State 13-10, but left a season-high 15 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the second, fifth and seventh innings.

"Over the 44 years that I have been privileged to be the play-by-play broadcaster for Wichita State athletics, I have been part of 1,419 consecutive broadcasts of men's basketball games without ever missing one, and I have loved every minute of that time, representing the WSU programs and the incredible Shocker fans. Unfortunately, tonight it is necessary to step back from that labor of love for a moment. I am receiving treatment for prostate cancer, and in order to maintain the optimum schedule for those treatments, I have decided to remain at home and will miss the games at East Carolina and Charlotte. I am roughly two weeks into treatment and tolerating it well and feel good, and if that continues, it is likely I will not miss any more games.

I want everyone to know that we were fortunate to identify my situation early enough that, while there are never any guarantees, the prognosis for a positive outcome is good, and I am receiving excellent medical care. I have always been blessed with good health and probably have been a little nonchalant about that, but my wife Debbie has stayed after me about keeping regular doctor's appointments and it was because of that, that the doctors were able to diagnose the cancer in a timely manner. If there is a message in all of this, I urge all men to get checked regularly.

To this point, I have only shared my diagnosis with my family and the colleagues I work most closely with, but I felt that missing games for the first time in 44 years probably requires an explanation. Dispute may have led to the mass shooting after the Chiefs' Super Bowl parade, police say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Police say the shooting that left one person dead and nearly two dozen injured after the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade appeared to stem from a dispute between several people. Police Chief Stacey Graves said Thursday that the 22 injured people ranged in age from 8 to 47 years old, with half of them were under the age of 16. A mother of two was killed. Police say they detained three juveniles but released one who they determined wasn't involved, leaving two in custody. Investigators are asking for witnesses and victims to call a dedicated hotline. The shooting outside the city's historic Union Station happened despite the presence of more than 800 police officers.

Championship parades likely to change in wake of shooting at Chiefs Super Bowl celebration

BOSTON (AP) — Kansas City's mayor and security experts say it could be time to rethink the way teams celebrate their championships. Mayor Quinton Lucas said if the Chiefs win another Super Bowl it might be better for a smaller party at their home stadium, where security can be managed more easily. One person was killed and 22 others wounded when gunfire broke out shortly after the Chiefs left the stage at their victory rally. Police say they believe the shooting was the result of a dispute among individuals in the crowd, and not a terrorist attack. Security experts say large gatherings combine with the prevalence of guns to make a deadly combination.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods attracted all the attention. The best golf was in the group ahead. Patrick Cantlay is looking like he wants to join the list of Southern California natives who have won at Riviera. He opened with a 64 at the Genesis Invitational and has a one-shot lead. Woods shot a 72 that was marked by a bizarre finish. He hit a shank from the middle of the 18th fairway and then hit a brilliant recovery through the trees. He was eight behind. Rory McIlroy was in worse shape with a double bogey-triple bogey stretch that led to 74.

Jimmie Johnson uses desperate late push to qualify for his 21st Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson raced his way into the Daytona 500 with a three-wide move through the final turn of Thursday night's first qualifying race. Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing won the 150-mile race that is part of how the field is set for Sunday's season-opening "Great American Race." Johnson has Sunday's race on what he expects to be a nine-race schedule this season. He's co-owner now of Legacy Motor Club and, in his second season, switched the team from Chevrolet to Toyota. But the Toyota's lacked speed in Wednesday night time trials and Johnson failed to earn a guaranteed spot in what will be his 21st Daytona 500. It meant that he had to beat J.J. Yeley in the first of two qualifying races Thursday night at Daytona International Speedway.

Rob Manfred says he will retire as baseball commissioner in January 2029 after 14 years

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says he will retire when his current term ends in January 2029. Speaking at a spring training news conference, Manfred noted he will be 70 years old and been commissioner for 14 years when his term ends on Jan. 25, 2029. The 65-year-old succeeded Bud Selig in January 2015 and was given a five-year term. Owners voted in November 2018 to offer Manfred a new deal through the 2024 season, then voted last July to approve his latest term.

US women's captain Lindsey Horan apologizes after saying American soccer fans 'aren't smart'

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — U.S. women's national team captain Lindsey Horan apologized Thursday for recent comments in which she said American soccer fans "aren't smart" and they "don't know the game." Speaking on a conference call with reporters ahead of the first CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, Horan said her remarks were "poorly expressed." Horan said she had reflected on the remarks and the reaction to them. In addition to apologizing, Horan emphasized the appreciation both she and the rest of the team have for the fans.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Klay Thompson was told Thursday he wouldn't be starting a game for the first time since he was a Golden State rookie in 2012. He responded with his best game of the season. Thompson scored a season-high 35 points, making seven 3-pointers and leading the Warriors to a 140-137 victory over the Utah Jazz. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith shared the WWE title belt to help calm a young boy in the aftermath of the mass shooting at the team’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-chiefs-dynasty-kansas-city-d16a308684d97a6be2d269c8d56404be" target="_blank">Super Bowl celebration</a>.

Smith, who sported the belt during the celebration, noticed the frightened boy, who was with his father.

“I was thinking, what can I do to help him out?” Smith said in an interview Thursday on&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/GMA/status/1758110606765256801?s=20" target="_blank">Good Morning America</a>. “I just handed him the belt: ‘Hey buddy, you’re the champion. No one’s going to hurt you, man. We’ve got your back.’”

The shooting left 22 people injured, half of them under the age of 16, Police Chief Stacey Graves said. A mother of two was also killed.

Smith said he talked about wrestling to take the boy’s mind off the frightening scene after they were loaded onto a bus.

Smith said he and long snapper James Winchester were among those sheltering in a closet and that Winchester “was very instrumental in keeping people calm.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid also took time to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article285498677.html?taid=65cd773088998b0[%E2%80%A6]tm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank">comfort others at the scene</a>, including Shawnee Mission East 10th-grader Gabe Wallace.

“Andy Reid was trying to comfort me, which was nice,” Wallace told The Kansas City Star. “He was kind of hugging me, just like, ‘Are you OK, man? Are you OK? Just please breathe.’ He was being real nice and everything.’

“He left to check on other people, I’m pretty sure.”

Three people were detained and firearms were recovered during the mayhem at Union Station.

ATLANTA&nbsp;– The Kansas duo of Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar Jr. have been named to the 2024 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year Midseason Team, the Naismith Awards announced Thursday.

Kansas, Houston, North Carolina and Purdue are the only schools to have two athletes listed among the 30 named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team. Dickinson and McCullar are vying to become the third player from Kansas to win the Naismith Trophy, joining Danny Manning (1988) and Frank Mason III (2017).

On most all midseason All-American teams, McCullar leads the Big 12 in scoring at 19.5 points per game, which is 41st nationally. His two triple-doubles are the most amongst the NCAA. The San Antonio guard also leads KU with 35 three-point field goals made. His 6.4 rebounds per game are second on the team and he ranks in 11 Big 12 statistical categories.

A two-time national Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist and three time All-Big 12 selection, for his career McCullar has scored 1,468 points with 729 rebounds, 333 assists and 212 steals. He has 104 starts in his 134 games played, including 55 starts in 56 contests in his two seasons at Kansas.

A six-time Big 12 weekly award winner in 2023-24, Dickinson leads the Big 12 and is seventh nationally in rebounds per game at 10.8. He has double-doubles in three of his last six games and his 13 DDs lead the Big 12 and are ninth nationally. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Dickinson is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double. He also leads KU with 31 blocked shots and has 28 steals.

Like McCullar, Dickinson is on most every midseason All-America team. He enters Saturday’s game at Oklahoma with 2,071 points and 1,057 rebounds and is just the fourth active player in NCAA Division I to surpass both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for his career. Prior to joining Kansas last summer, Dickinson was a three-time all-conference honoree while at Michigan and a 2021 Consensus All-America Second Team selection.

No. 6 Kansas (19-6, 7-5) will play at No. 25 Oklahoma (18-7, 6-6) on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tip from the Lloyd Noble Center will be at 3 p.m. CT and the contest will be televised on ESPN.
