Hutchinson Community College freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday.

Smith, a 5-foot-7 freshman from Topeka, had career highs of 33 points and six 3-pointers as part of a huge week for the now No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons.

Smith had her first career 30-point game on a 92-62 win at Pratt last Wednesday. She hit 12 of 17 total shots and 6 of 11 from 3-point range against the Beavers. Smith added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Smith followed that with 20 points and four steals against Cloud County in a 93-63 win.

For the week, the Jayhawk Conference's third-leading scorer averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 rebounds 3.0 steaks and 2.0 assists. She shot 63.6 percent and hit 8 of 18 from 3-point range. Smith surpassed the 400-point mark of the season.

The Blue Dragon guard was also named KJCCC Player of the Week on November 14 and on December 12.

Smith is the fourth-leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference at 17.7 points per game.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self said he didn’t curse or yell, and wasn’t really trying to get thrown out of the game. Still, he had seen enough in a lopsided road loss for his sixth-ranked Jayhawks.

Self was ejected for the first time in his 21 seasons at Kansas after getting two technical fouls in quick succession with just under six minutes remaining in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-texas-tech-basketball-score-44de925dfc8f30e91372e7d06feb93e5" target="_blank">79-50 loss at Texas Tech</a>&nbsp;on Monday night. He became the third Big 12 coach this month with a first-time ejection at his school.

“I did say a magic word, I guess, multiple times that got me a couple of techicals,” Self said.

Those technical fouls came right after Kansas center Hunter Dickinson was called for an offensive foul under the basket, though that wasn’t all that bothered the coach.

“I honestly feel the game’s not being called the way it needs to be called,” Self said. “Regardless of it’s our favor or their favor, it makes no difference to me.”

Pop Isaacs made all four free throws after Self left the court for a 63-43 lead.

“That was frustration, but I felt that all year,” Self said. “So, good officials ... good officials, I just don’t see it the same way that it’s being called.”

Self said there has been a lot of physicality, “more this year than there has been in years past.”

It was the 722nd game at Kansas for Self, whose only other ejection in 31 seasons overall as a college head coach came in 1999 while with Tulsa at Wyoming.

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson got two technical fouls and was ejected with 15:08 remaining in a home win February 6.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-oklahoma-state-basketball-score-shead-09f5cb4b675e83182250b12abda87d6e" target="_blank">Sampson stormed to the other end of the court</a>&nbsp;and started yelling at the officials for not calling fouls against Oklahoma State.

Sampson had to be restrained by his players and assistant coaches and ushered off the floor. It was his first ejection in 10 years of coaching at Houston.

Baylor’s Scott Drew, who also in his 21st season is tied with Self as the Big 12’s longest-tenured coaches,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/drew-ejected-rhoades-big-12-officials-a88f8bf6bac105a0402accad03be16f1" target="_blank">got his first career ejection February 2</a>&nbsp;after two technical fouls in a home win over Iowa State. Both fouls, one midway through the first half and the other with 11 1/2 minutes left, apparently were because he was outside the coaching box.

That shattered last year's mark of 115.1 million for Kansas City's last-play victory over Philadelphia and is a 7% increase. The game was televised by CBS, Nickelodeon and Univision and streamed on Paramount+ as well as the NFL's digital platforms. Some of the increase can be attributed to a change in the way viewers are counted, with out-of-home viewers from all 50 states included for the first time.

DeShaun Foster is named UCLA football coach after Chip Kelly's move to Ohio State

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former UCLA great DeShaun Foster was named head coach to take over the Bruins' football program after Chip Kelly left to become offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Foster has been a Bruins assistant the past seven years but left last month to become the Las Vegas Raiders' running backs coach. This will be Foster's first head coaching job after 11 years of being an assistant in college, including 10 at UCLA. He was the running backs coach at Texas Tech in 2016.

Cowboys and Mike Zimmer agree on a reunion as defensive coordinator

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have settled on a coaching reunion by deciding to bring back Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator to replace Dan Quinn. Zimmer is rejoining the Cowboys 18 years after serving in the same role with Dallas. He had an eight-year stint as head coach in Minnesota. The Cowboys and Zimmer came to an agreement Monday. The Cowboys had an opening after Quinn accepted the head coaching job in Washington. Mike McCarthy will be the fifth Cowboys coach that Zimmer will work for with Dallas.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City will be turning red on Valentine's Day as the Chiefs celebrate their come-from-behind overtime Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers with a parade. School cancellation announcements began just minutes after Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Chiefs became the first team since the New England Patriots with Tom Brady two decades ago to successfully defend their title. Parades are becoming commonplace in Kansas City with the Chiefs winning their third Super Bowl in five seasons. But this time, people are wondering if pop superstar Taylor Swift will attend with her boyfriend, Kelce. Swift has a concert in Australia on Friday.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Darrion Williams had a perfect night for Texas Tech, and the Red Raiders never trailed in a lopsided victory over sixth-ranked Kansas.

Williams scored a career-high 30 points on 12-of-12 shooting, including four 3-pointers. He also made both of his free throws and had 11 rebounds in Texas Tech's 79-50 win Monday night.

“Give him credit because (of) his work habits and his belief in this team. ... I do believe the game rewards those people that play it to win,” Red Raiders coach Grant McCasland said. “What an awesome combination he was tonight of scoring and facilitating and rebounding and just winning.”

The 12 field goals without a miss were the most ever for a Texas Tech player. Williams, a sophomore transfer from Nevada, was also the first NCAA player in the last 25 seasons with 30 points, 10 rebounds and a perfect shooting percentage against a ranked opponent, according to ESPN Stats.

Williams hit a 3 on the first shot of the game for the Red Raiders (18-6, 7-4 Big 12). They made 8 of 12 from long range over the first 13 minutes to jump ahead 27-14.

It was a frustrating night for Kansas (19-6, 7-5), which played its second game in a row without Big 12 leading scorer Kevin McCullar Jr., and with guard Dajuan Harris not at full strength after rolling his left ankle late in a 64-61 home win over 12th-ranked Baylor two days earlier.

“We're beat up and tired right now,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said.

Self got his first ejection in 21 seasons at Kansas with 5:49 remaining after getting two technical fouls following an offensive foul call against Hunter Dickinson, though that wasn't the only thing that bothered the coach.

“I didn’t curse him, I didn't yell. But I did say a magic word, I guess, multiple times that got me a couple of technicals. I really wasn’t trying to get thrown out," Self said. “But, you know, the way things (were) with the game, I honestly feel the game's not being called the way it needs to be called, regardless of its our favor or their favor, it makes no difference to me.”

Warren Washington had 11 points for Tech in only 20 minutes. He was limping when he came out of the game with just over 16 minutes left, but returned about eight minutes later and had a dunk before departing for good.

Nicolas Timberlake and Johnny Furphy each had 13 points for Kansas. Harris finished with seven points on 2-of-8 shooting, while Dickinson was limited to five points while missing 10 of his 12 shots.

McCullar, who averages 19.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, is in his second season with the Jayhawks. He was part of two NCAA Tournament teams while playing 79 games in three seasons at Texas Tech from 2019-22.

Texas Tech made its first three 3s, and was up 12-4 on Joe Toussaint's shot four minutes into the game. Kansas got even with eight consecutive points after a timeout, but that was the game's only tie. The Red Raiders went ahead to stay on back-to-back 3s by Kerwin Walton and Isaacs.

The 29-point margin matched Texas Tech's largest over the Jayhawks. The other was 91-62 five years ago, also at home. It also matched Kansas' most lopsided loss when ranked and playing an unranked team, the other being against Kentucky in 1950. ... Unranked Big 12 teams are 9-3 at home against Top 10 teams this season.

Kansas: Without McCullar and with Harris not completely healthy, the Jayhawks shot a season-low 32.7% (17 of 52) from the field and their 50 points were also the fewest this season. Their big guys, Dickinson and KJ Adams, were a combined 3 of 23 from the field.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders improved to 13-1 at home. None of the current players was on the roster two years ago when Tech also won at home against Kansas. ... Texas Tech had lost three in a row before its win at home Saturday over UCF, and fell out of the new AP poll earlier Monday.

Kansas, already with six wins against Top 25 opponents, plays Saturday at No. 25 Oklahoma. Those ranked wins include 78-66 over the then-No. 9 Sooners at home on Jan. 13.

Texas Tech plays Saturday at No. 10 Iowa State.

Ohio State is up to No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll" target="_blank">women’s basketball poll,</a>&nbsp;matching the best ranking in school history.

The Buckeyes, who were fifth last week,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-state-michigan-state-basketball-score-2d40a88101b461b261774bff40488734" target="_blank">have won 11 straight games</a>&nbsp;and their only losses this season have come to USC, UCLA and Michigan. The Buckeyes started as No. 7 in the preseason poll before falling to 20th on Jan. 1. They were 18th on Jan. 15 and have been on the rise ever since.

South Carolina remained the unanimous No. 1 choice, grabbing all 35 first-place votes again in Monday’s poll after routing Missouri&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gamecocks-huskies-basketball-score-7c9ece2252ec062d5e2572d5a6cb9aa7" target="_blank">and then-No. 11 UConn</a>. The Gamecocks did it without star center Kamilla Cardoso, who was playing for Brazil in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

Stanford moved up three places to No. 3. Iowa dropped to fourth and Texas climbed to fifth.

It’s the sixth consecutive week that there’s a different No. 2 team in the poll after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/basketball-score-iowa-nebraska-0c1860db366a14284fbfbb5fc3d9d689" target="_blank">Iowa blew a double-digit lead to Nebraska</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. Caitlin Clark, who is eight points short of the NCAA record for career scoring, was scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The Hawkeyes weren’t the only top five team to lose last week. N.C. State dropped three spots to sixth after falling to Virginia Tech. Colorado fell four spots to eighth after a loss at home to Oregon State. Kansas State remained seventh.

This is the first time since Week 9 of last season that no new team entered the poll.

Oregon State made the biggest leap, moving up six spots to 11th after sweeping Utah and Colorado. The Beavers are currently third in the Pac-12 standings behind Stanford and the Buffaloes. They have won five straight and host UCLA and USC this week.

The six different teams in the No. 2 spot is unusual, though there was a stretch in 2021 when a different team held the spot for seven straight weeks. This season, UCLA and Iowa both held the spot twice before losing. Kansas State had the slot for a week before a loss. It’s Ohio State’s turn. No. 18 Louisville finished off a difficult part of its schedule that saw the Cardinals face four consecutive Top 25 teams. They went 2-2 against them after falling to Syracuse on Sunday. Jeff Walz’s team split two games with the Orange sandwiched around a loss to N.C. State and victory over Notre Dame.

The Pac-12, which has been the most dominant conference so far this season, has five teams in the first 11 and six ranked in the Top 25 overall. The ACC and Big 12 are next with five teams each. The Big 12 has three and the Big East and SEC each have two. The Ivy and West Coast each have one.

🏀 WBB: K-State up one spot to No. 7 in latest AP Top 25

Indiana State’s balanced scoring, free-flowing offense and its goggle-wearing big man have the program off to one of its best starts in years.

Now the Sycamores have something that hasn’t happened since Larry Bird played in Terre Haute: a spot in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll" target="_blank">AP Top 25</a>.

Riding a nine-game winning streak, Indiana State debuted at No. 23 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll Monday, the Sycamores’ first ranking since reaching No. 1 in 1978-79.

“It’s a group that the community can really wrap their arms around and I think they have. That’s just great to see,” Indiana State coach Josh Schertz told reporters recently. “I know Terre Haute. They love basketball. I know there’s a great history and tradition, from Larry Bird to John Wooden to Clarence Walker.”

Connecticut and Purdue kept the top two spots in the AP Top 25. The defending national champion Huskies received 45 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel and the Boilermakers had 16.

Schertz took over the Indiana State program during the pandemic, inheriting a depleted roster with no chance to get players to visit campus. Schertz cobbled together a team that won 11 games his first season and the Sycamores improved to 23-13 last season.

Indiana State (22-3) has been on a roll in Schertz’s third season, winning all 11 home games while taking a two-game lead over Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference at 11-1.

The Sycamores have five players scoring in double figures, led by dynamic 5-foot-10 guard Isaiah Swope’s 17.7 points per game. Big man Robbie Avila has become a fan favorite with his goggles, averaging 16.4 points and 7.4 rebounds.

Indiana State is fifth nationally in scoring at 85.6 points per game, ninth in 3-point percentage (39%) and is No. 1 in adjusted field goal percentage, according to KenPom. The combination has the Sycamores eyeing their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011.

“Our goal is we want to get to the NCAA Tournament and advance,” Schertz said. “You never want to put ceilings on yourself. You want to get to the tournament and win games and go as far as you can. You saw what happened last year with Florida Atlantic and San Diego State playing in the Final Four — there’s nothing outside of your reach.”

Losses by No. 6 Kansas and No. 7 North Carolina led to a shakeup in the top 10 behind UConn and Purdue.

Houston moved up two spots to No. 5, Marquette rose three places to No. 4 and No. 8 Arizona climbed three following a sweep of the Pac-12’s mountain schools. Tennessee, Duke and Iowa State rounded out the top 10. The Cyclones returned to the top 10 for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

Iowa State and No. 11 South Carolina had the biggest jumps in this week’s poll, each rising four spots.

No. 20 Wisconsin had the biggest drop, falling nine places after losing four straight games.

No. 22 Kentucky dropped five places after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-gonzaga-basketball-score-f550c135e2863fe788db69d9393e6af5" target="_blank">losing three straight games</a>&nbsp;at Rupp Arena for the first time it opened in 1976. The Wildcats hadn’t lost three in a row at home since the 1966-67 season, when they played at Memorial Coliseum.

No. 18 Saint Mary’s moved back into the AP Top 25 for the first time since the preseason poll after wins over Pacific and Portland. No. 19 Virginia returned to the poll for the first time since mid-December thanks to an eight-game winning streak.

No. 25 Oklahoma moved back into the poll after dropping out last week following wins&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/byu-oklahoma-mens-basketball-score-af3e5cd3b54311d11629caaec05efcd8" target="_blank">over No. 18 BYU</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oklahoma-state-oklahoma-basketball-score-a67ec240cf37fe4d501c0b80ed38e600" target="_blank">rival Oklahoma State</a>.

Utah State dropped out from No. 22 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nevada-utah-state-mens-basketball-score-e0ad04a9b5248d0443aca69d05759197" target="_blank">losing at home to Nevada</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/utah-state-boise-state-basketball-score-504d1bbb3a303d25f0f522c04e29ef7a" target="_blank">beating Boise State</a>. Texas Tech fell from No. 23 to unranked following&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/baylor-texas-tech-basketball-score-b624559fbb5275253f8e032f971c3581" target="_blank">a loss to No. 12 Baylor</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ucf-texas-tech-basketball-score-54f135a0b599ec837bed59233f5b6455" target="_blank">a win over UCF</a>.

San Diego State also dropped out from No. 24 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-diego-state-nevada-basketball-score-96b17ee78bea9fb8b8d2d36ce1e69e3c" target="_blank">an overtime loss to Nevada</a>.

The Big 12 leads the country with six ranked teams, followed by the SEC with five. The Atlantic Coast, Big Ten and Big East conferences were next with three. The Pac-12, Atlantic 10, West Coast, Missouri Valley and American Athletic conferences each had one.

&nbsp;WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Basketball Tournament (TBT), the 64-team, $1 million winner-take-all event, announced today that Wichita will serve as one of the regional and quarterfinal locations for the 2024 event, hosted by Visit Wichita and Wichita State University.

AfterShocks, the Wichita State alumni team, will return as the featured team in the eight-team Wichita Regional. Commitments for the 2024 AfterShocks roster currently includes&nbsp;Conner Frankamp&nbsp;and&nbsp;Markis McDuffie.

The 2024 Wichita Regional will be played at Charles Koch Arena, July 20-24. TBT's quarterfinal game in Wichita will take place July 30.

This summer will be the fifth year Wichita has hosted a TBT regional and third hosting a quarterfinals, continuing its reign as the longest running location in TBT's 11-year history.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last summer, Wichita State set a new TBT single-game attendance record, as 7,202 fans showed up to support AfterShocks in their quarterfinals matchup against TBT 2023 Champions Heartfire. Wichita State owns four of TBT's top-five attendance records, and seven of TBT's top-10.&nbsp;

"This marks the fifth summer TBT has come to Wichita, and it's an annual reminder of the passion and excitement the city of Wichita has for basketball and the Shockers," said Wichita State senior associate athletic director&nbsp;Brad Pittman. "We look forward to putting on a great show once again in 2024."

Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was set to be a superstar, has died in a car crash

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was set to be a superstar of long-distance running, has died along with his coach in a car crash in Kenya. Kiptum was 24, and the world record he set last year at the Chicago Marathon was ratified by international track federation World Athletics just last week. Kiptum, who was Kenyan, and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed in the crash late Sunday. Police said their vehicle was the only one involved in the crash and Kiptum was driving when it veered off a road and into a ditch before hitting a tree.

&nbsp; WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State and No. 20 Florida Atlantic needed five extra minutes to decide a winner on Sunday, and it would be the Owls coming out on top, 95-82.

Wichita State (10-14, 2-9) was outscored 21-8 in the overtime session after the Owls scored nine of the first 11 points after regulation. For the second straight season the Shockers went to OT on Super Bowl Sunday, this time they come out on the wrong side of the scoreboard. This was the first overtime game of the&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/paul-mills/1128">Paul Mills</a>&nbsp;era with Wichita State dropping to 37-33 in OT games all-time at home.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/7579">Xavier Bell's</a>&nbsp;career-high 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting weren't enough to lift the Shockers to a ranked win.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/colby-rogers/7582">Colby Rogers</a>&nbsp;also topped the 20-point mark with 21, going 8-for-13 from the field.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7584">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Wichita State shot 51 percent overall and 12-of-16 from the free throw line. After committing 13 turnovers combined over the last two games, the Shockers had 17 on Sunday. The Owls scored 16 points off those turnovers.

FAU grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and shot 47 percent from the field. They made the most of their free throw trips, going 20-for-22.

Five Owls finished in double figures, led by Vladislav Goldin's 20 points and nine rebounds.

Wichita State made eight of its first 12 field goal attempts to take a 21-16 lead just before the midway point. Rogers knocked down a pair of three-pointers and six quick points off the bench from Pohto had the Shockers in a groove on the offensive end.Florida Atlantic answered with a 7-0 run after Wichita State grabbed its largest lead of 26-20. Eight Wichita State turnovers kept the Owls in it despite shooting less than 40 percent from the field.

The first half was played about as even as one could ask with the Owls heading into the locker room with a 38-36 lead. Both teams had 20 points in the paint, three made three-pointers and seven points off turnovers. Wichita State held the advantage in field goal percentage at 52 percent to just 38 percent for FAU. The Owls were plus-6 at the free throw line.

Rogers and Bell had eight points apiece to lead the Shockers. Brandon Weatherspoon led all scorers with 10.Just over 6:00 minutes into the second half, FAU went six straight trips with a score to open up a 55-48 lead, forcing a Wichita State timeout.

A corner triple from Rogers pulled the Shockers back within two at the 10:17 mark only to see FAU respond with a 9-2 run to grab its largest lead, 68-59.

Just when it looked like the Owls were about to pull away, the Shockers came right back with their own 7-0 spurt to make it a two-point game with 4:00 minutes to go.After trading free throws, and under 1:00 minute to play, Bell knocked down the biggest shot of his career on a wing three-pointer to give the Shockers a 73-72 lead with 42 seconds remaining.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/quincy-ballard/7586">Quincy Ballard</a>&nbsp;foul on the Owls' next possession sent Bryan Greenlee to the line where he would convert to put them back on top. Coming right back, Bell drove down the lane and put himself and the team in position to retake the lead by drawing a foul. After missing the first he would make the second to tie the game at 74.

The Owls' final possession resulted in a turnover on the inbounds play right in front of their bench, giving the Shockers one final chance to win it in regulation. Wichita State got a great look off a 3/4 court pass to Pohto who tossed up a turnaround three-pointer near the top of the key, but it drew iron, sending the game to OT.

FAU immediately established momentum in overtime, scoring the first six points to grab an 80-74 lead barely a minute in. Rogers finally got the Shockers on the board with a jumper, but the Owls saw their opportunity and didn't miss it. Eight straight points made it 88-76 with 1:49 to go, putting the nail in the coffin.
