LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Gino Garcia hit a game-winning 30-yard field goal with 3 seconds to play and Texas Tech upset No. 19 Kansas 16-13 on Saturday as the Jayhawks struggled after losing quarterback Jason Bean in the first half.

Behren Morton completed passes of 16, 14 and 32 yards as Texas Tech went 63 yards in 20 seconds to set up the game-deciding kick.

“Those were day one installs,” Morton said. “Jerand (Bradley) went up and got that last ball and I just tried to put it where only he could get it.”

Tahj Brooks ran for 133 yards and a touchdown as the Red Raiders (5-5, 4-3 Big 12) came back after Kansas (7-3, 4-3) tied the game on a 22-yard field goal by Seth Keller with 26 seconds left in regulation.

“We go up against our defense every day so I had faith they'd do the job,” Brooks said. “They came up big for us with those stops.”

Texas Tech stopped Kansas after they had several chances to score inside the 10-yard line and take the lead.

“We battled and found a way to tie it up late but credit them for driving down the field,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “Our defense found a way to get stops and responded well when challenged. Offensively, I don’t think we ever fully got set today.”

Texas Tech opened a 10-0 lead in the first quarter as Brooks scored early in a 5-yard TD run. Garcia added a 32-yard field goal late in the quarter.

The Red Raiders extended their lead to 13-0 early in the third quarter on Garcia's second field goal before Kansas got back in the game on a Devin Neal 60-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

The Jayhawks marched 71 yards later in the fourth quarter and got within three points on a 24-yard field goal by Keller. He tied the game late but Texas Tech found a way to win as Morton was 19 of 25 for 176 yards.

Bean went down with an injury in the second quarter and returned for just one drive the rest of the game. Cole Ballard finished up and was 9 of 20 for 124 yards and an interception.

Texas Tech is a win away from being bowl eligible.

“We haven't been able to win on the road this year, we've played well, but haven't got many wins to show for it,” Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said. “Kansas is a good team and now we need one more win to make it to a bowl.”

Texas Tech: Their run game was too much for the Jayhawk defense to handle in the first half, but their offense struggled in the second half before the winning drive in the final minute.

Kansas: Without their quarterback, Kansas struggled to move the ball and had its Big 12 Conference hopes smashed.

Texas Tech: Returns home to face UCF next Saturday.

FHSU has won at least seven games under Brown seven times and are looking to reach eight for the sixth time under his guidance. The Tigers will be looking to snap a two-game skid to the Hornets. Emporia State won both the 2021 and 2022 meetings between the teams. This is the 96th&nbsp;meeting between the teams in a series that goes all the way back to 1923. FHSU has played Emporia State more than any other team in program history. FHSU has 37 wins in the all-time series.

The Tigers are coming off a loss to then No. 11 ranked Central Missouri last week in Warrensburg. The result gave UCM at least a share of the MIAA title when Pittsburg State lost at Missouri Western. UCM is now the highest nationally ranked MIAA team at No. 7, while Pittsburg State sits at No. 8 and Missouri Western is now No. 21. The Hornets posted a win at home over Missouri Southern last week.

Despite coming up short against the nation's top offense last week, Fort Hays State still owns the best defense in the MIAA at just 281.7 yards per game. Earlier this week it was reported that after 15 seasons, Salina South and long-time head coach Sam Sellers would be parting ways.

Sellers assumed head coaching duties midway through the 2009 campaign and led the Cougars to a stretch of three consecutive ten-win seasons from 2012-2014, including several deep playoff runs.

In a public statement, the administration of South High said “We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Coach Sellers for his many years of dedicated service to our student-athletes and our athletic program at Salina South High School.”

Reached for comment, the long-time head coach reminisced about how much his time as the leader of the Cougars meant to him.

“I bleed green and gold and I love everything about South High,” Sellers said. “Not just the football program but all of our students and activities. It’s crazy how fast time goes but if I had a time machine I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.”

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — No. 2 Michigan plays its biggest game of the season so far at No. 9 Penn State on Saturday. Whether Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh will be leading his team on the sideline was is in the hands of a judge. The Big Ten banned Harbaugh from coaching the rest of the Wolverines' final regular-season games as punishment for a sign-stealing scheme. The school almost immediately asked a judge for a court order putting the penalty on hold.

Column: College football keeps its head in the sand and winds up with a silly scandal

AP Sports Columnist Paul Newberry thinks the absurd signs they hold up on the sidelines to send in plays show just how far college football is behind the times. He writes that the game should simply follow the NFL's longstanding method of sending in plays via radio communications. If that was allowed by the NCAA, Newberry writes, the sign-stealing scandal at Michigan never would have happened. Instead, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has been suspended for the final three games of the regular season, stealing the thunder of what should be the best time of the season.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Keshad Johnson hit a tough whistle-drawing layup for a three-point play with 46.8 seconds left that pushed No. 12 Arizona to a late lead on the way to a 78-73 win at No. 2 Duke. Johnson finished with 14 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats, his biggest coming off a feed from Caleb Love. Love is a transfer from hated Duke rival North Carolina who heard plenty from the "Cameron Crazies" all night. But he had four key late free throws. Kyle Filipowski had 25 points to lead Duke. Arizona had a 45-33 rebounding advantage.

LeBron James scores 32 points, Lakers rally to beat Suns 122-119 to snap 3-game skid

PHOENIX (AP) — LeBron James scored 32 points, D'Angelo Russell had 19 and the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a three-game losing streak, beating the Phoenix Suns 122-119 on Friday night in the NBA In-Season Tournament. James had a stellar performance, once again defying age in his 21st season, shooting 11 of 17 from the field, including 3 of 4 on 3s. He added 11 rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes. Kevin Durant led Phoenix with 38 points. Bradley Beal added 24 — 20 in the first half in his Suns home debut. Devin Booker missed his fourth straight game because of a strained right calf.

LeBron James pokes fun at Michigan and coach Jim Harbaugh for sign-stealing scandal

Noren makes birdies early and late for 67 and 2-shot lead in Bermuda

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — Alex Noren had a great start and then had to wait until the end for a strong finish. It added to a 66 and a two-shot lead in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Noren had 11 straight pars after his great start. Two birdies toward the end of his round allowed him to set the tournament record at 15-under 127. He leads by two shots over Ryan Moore, Satoshi Kodaira and Ryan Brehm. Moore is at No. 140 in the FedEx Cup. Two weeks remain for players to finish in the top 125 and keep full PGA Tour cards next year.

UFC 295 misses star power after Jon Jones injury calls off heavyweight clash with Stipe Miocic

UFC 295 is missing some serious star power. The original main event of Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight championship was canceled. Jones tore a pectoral tendon off the bone during training last month and needed surgery. Miocic did not get a replacement fight and will sit out Saturday's UFC 295 show at Madison Square Garden. The fight for the vacant light heavyweight title between Jiri Procházka and Alex Pereira was bumped to the main event. Sergei Pavlovich fights Tom Aspinall for the interim heavyweight championship.

Warm reception on chilly night as Dominican Winter League teams meet in New York

NEW YORK (AP) — Fan reception was warm when a pair of Dominican Winter League teams met to start a three-game series at Citi Field. The weather certainly was not. More than 1,500 miles from their Caribbean ballparks, players from Águilas Cibaeñas and Tigres del Licey took batting practice at the New York Mets' home wearing hoodies and ski caps. A crowd of less than 10,000 was on hand at the 44,000-capacity ballpark for the first pitch of Águilas' 3-0 victory. Announced attendance was 25,233 for the first of three exhibitions, which don't count in the winter league standings. The advance sale for Saturday afternoon was 31,000.

Israeli national team arrives in Kosovo for soccer game under tight security measures

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Israel's national soccer team has arrived in Kosovo amid tight security measures at the airport ahead of a postponed European Championship qualifier. The team's two buses were accompanied by several police vehicles and armed officers as it left the airport. There was also tight security at the hotel where the team was staying ahead of Sunday's game. It is the first match Israel plays since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas and the ongoing war in Gaza. It had originally been scheduled for Oct. 15. The Israeli soccer federation posted video social media showing players getting off the team bus on its way to the airport in Israel to take cover by the roadside, apparently amid nearby rocket fire.

The premiere national rivalry in NJCAA Football renews itself on Saturday at Gowans Stadium as the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons play host to the No. 2-ranked Iowa Western Reivers.

Kickoff for the Military Appreciation Day battle between the Blue Dragons (9-0) and Reivers (10-0) is set for 1 p.m. Military personnel with ID and one guest will be admitted free.

The game will be streamed live and free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff. The game will also be broadcast of Blue Dragon Flagship Station KHUT-FM (102.9).

When the preseason polls were released on August, Iowa Western was No. 1 and Hutchinson was No. 2. The Blue Dragons and Reivers flipped spots in the polls after Week 1 and they have remained Nos. 1 and 2 for 10-straight weeks.

The Blue Dragons captured their fourth-consecutive Jayhawk Conference football championship and 12th in program history last Saturday after a 42-8 victory at Independence. Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/collier_samari_cpv0">Samari Collier</a>&nbsp;threw for four touchdown passes and a career-high 236 yards - Collier was named the KJCCC and NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons intercepted four passes, including a nation-leading seventh by freshman safety&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/nolan_ryan_iyfa">Ryan Nolan</a>, and held the Pirates to a negative-13 yards rushing. The Dragons also recorded two safeties in the game.

Iowa Western had a much tougher battle last Saturday before claiming their 12th-consecutive victory. The Reivers trailed Coffeyville 10-0 and 17-14 before rallying to defeat the Red Ravens 20-17 at Titan Stadium in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Reivers scored the go-ahead touchdown with 7:24 to play after a 10-play, 48-yard scoring drive was capped by Shawn Gary's 10-yard touchdown run.

Last season Hutchinson and Iowa Western met twice.

On Nov. 12, 2022 in Council Bluffs, the Blue Dragons rallied from down 11 points with a little more than 8 minutes to play to defeat Iowa Western 29-28. A little more than a month later in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Reivers defeated Hutchinson 31-0 in the NJCAA Championship Game.

The Big 12 matchup will kickoff at 11 a.m. on FS1 with Eric Collins (Play-by-Play) and Devin Gardner (Analyst) on the call.

Kansas (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) is off to its best start in the first nine games of its season since 2007, following a 28-21 victory over Iowa State on Nov. 4 in Ames, Iowa. The victory was Kansas’ first as a ranked team since the then-No. 16 ranked Jayhawks defeated Iowa State 41-36 on Oct. 10, 2009.

In the win against Iowa State, Kansas quarterback Jason Bean threw for 287 yards and one touchdown, paired with two rushing touchdowns for running back Devin Neal. Kansas’ defense put together another strong showing, holding Iowa State to 333 total yards and 21 points, while recording a defensive touchdown on a 50-yard interception return by cornerback Mello Dotson.

The interception return was Dotson’s second in as many games, marking the first time in school history a Kansas defender recorded interception returns for a touchdown in back-to-back games. The Jayhawks are tied for the nation’s lead in defensive touchdowns this season with four.

Texas Tech (4-5, 3-3 Big 12) enters Saturday’s game coming off a 35-28 victory over TCU on Thursday, Nov. 2, in which running back Tahj Brooks ran for 146 yards and a touchdown, paired with two passing touchdowns by quarterback Behren Morton. Defensively, Texas Tech benefitted on two interceptions by Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, who now has nine career interceptions.

The meeting between the Jayhawks and the Red Raiders will be the 25th in the series history, which Texas Tech leads 22-2 all-time. Kansas’ last victory against Texas Tech came on Oct. 28, 2019, in Lawrence, 37-34.

This weekend’s game against Texas Tech serves as Kansas’ first of two remaining home games, as the Jayhawks host Kansas State for the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Jayhawks will then close out the season on Saturday, Nov. 25 in a road contest at Cincinnati.

GREAT BEND – The high-scoring Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team relied on its defense Friday to earn head coach Tommy DeSalme a milestone victory.

Hutchinson's defense limited NOC-Enid to 35.6 percent shooting and only 28 points in the second half to open the Barton Classic to a 74-61 victory over the Jets at the Barton Gym.

The Blue Dragons (4-0) will play NOC-Tonkawa (3-2) at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend.

Friday's victory gave DeSalme his 50th coaching victory on the Blue Dragon bench.

Hutchinson led 39-33 at halftime and kept NOC-Enid at arm's length with a stingy defense. The Blue Dragons held NOC-Enid to 21 of 59 overall shooting and just 3 of 21 from distance. Hutchinson also forced 14 Jets' turnovers and held a 48-31 rebounding advantage.

Sophomore forward Dre Weathers scored a career-high 19 points on 9 of 13 shooting to lead the Blue Dragons. Weathers added seven rebounds.

The Blue Dragons shot 46.3 percent (31 of 67) from the field. Hutchinson was 2 of 17 from 3-point range and 10 of 13 from the free-throw line. The Dragons had to overcome 22 turnovers.

Sophomore JP Ricks scored 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting for Hutchinson. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/bundy_kernan_hvu2">Kernan Bundy</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to score 10 points and grab eight rebounds.

The Blue Dragons shot a season-high 51.8 percent and nailed a season-high nine 3-pointers while forcing a season's-best 30 turnovers in a 106-33 victory over Labette at the Barton Gym.

Hutchinson improved to 4-0 to start the season. The Blue Dragons will take on Redlands (4-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Redlands lost to Barton on Friday night.

Hutchinson's 73-point margin of victory is the ninth largest in program history and the second largest in series history with Labette.

The Dragons scored 100 points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2013-14 season when the accomplished that against Northwest Tech and Neosho County. The Blue Dragons hit 48 of 83 total shots, going 9 of 31 from 3-point range and 11 of 14 from the foul line.

Ontjes earned his 450th win on the Blue Dragon bench on Friday. His win total ranks second in both the KJCCC and Region VI to Cloud County's Brett Erkenbrack.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;led a season-high six Blue Dragon in double figures against Labette with her first career double-double. The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team plays outside the Sports Arena for the first time this early season with a pair of neutral-court contests this weekend at the Barton Classic.

The Blue Dragons (3-0) meets the NOC-Enid Jets (1-2) at 3 p.m. Friday at the Barton Gym. Hutchinson meets NOC-Tonkawa (3-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 2:45 each day.

Hutchinson is off to a strong start with three victories to start the season. The Dragons shot a season-high 49.4 percent from the field on a 100-64 victory over the Allen Red Devils on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

Through three games, the Blue Dragons are allowing 76.7 points per game and have forced 30 or more turnovers in three-straight games.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons travel to Great Bend for 1st road trip of the season

Fort Hays State vs. Southwestern Oklahoma State Friday, November 10 - 7:45 p.m. Emporia, Kan. - White Auditorium

Fort Hays State vs. Arkansas Tech Saturday, November 11 - 5:45 p.m. Emporia, Kan. - White Auditorium

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball opens its 2023-24 regular season with a pair of games against opponents from the Great American Conference this Friday and Saturday in Emporia, Kan. The Tigers take on Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday at 7:45 p.m., then Arkansas Tech on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

This will be the fourth time out of the last five seasons that FHSU opens its season with Southwestern Oklahoma State and Arkansas Tech. Emporia State has done the same as ESU will be the last of the four schools to host the season-opening weekend among the four teams.&nbsp; FHSU has seen success against SWOSU and ATU during this gathering between the teams, going 5-1 since 2019. FHSU defeated both teams in Russellville, Arkansas (2019) and Hays (2021) before splitting in Weatherford, Oklahoma (2022). Last year FHSU fell to SWOSU in the season opener by three points, but bounced back for a nine-point win over Arkansas Tech.

Emporia has been a place of success for the Tigers. FHSU has won nine of its last 10 games played in White Auditorium, all of which were against Emporia State. FHSU has won its last two games in the facility.

The Tigers are coming off a 21-9 season in 2022-23. They went 15-7 in MIAA to tie for third place with Emporia State. The Tigers saw their season close in the MIAA Tournament semifinals against Central Oklahoma. Northwest Missouri State, Central Oklahoma, and Emporia State are all among the NABC Top 25 to start the 2023-24 season, while Fort Hays State is receiving votes.

Southwestern Oklahoma State is in its first season under head coach Brett Weiberg. He is a familiar name to the Tigers after serving as head coach of Missouri Western for five seasons from 2013 to 2018. The Bulldogs are coming off a 12-16 record in 2022-23. Ben Smith is their top returning scorer at 15.0 points per game.

Arkansas Tech was picked second in the Great American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Wonder Boys went 16-15 overall last year. They are guided by Mark Downey, also a familiar name to the Tigers, after coaching Northeastern State for three seasons from 2017 to 2020. Taelon Peter is the top returning scorer for ATU at 15.5 points per game.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;is the top returning scorer for the Tigers at 16.4 points per game. An All-MIAA First Team and NABC All-District Second Team selection for the Central Region as season ago, Hammeke also led the Tigers in assists at 3.6 per game, while shooting 81.2 percent from the free-throw line. Returning all-conference performers joining Hammeke are Elijah Nnanabu and Bjarni Jonsson, who each earned honorable mention selections last year. Jonsson was named to the conference's All-Defensive Team for a second straight year as well. Six newcomers join eight returners (six that played last year) to make up FHSU's 14-man roster.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 3-0 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball teams play its final preps before conference play opens in one week this weekend with neutral site games on Friday and Saturday at the Barton Classic in Great Bend.

The Blue Dragons play Redlands (0-3) at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Barton Gym and Redlands (4-0) at 1 p.m on Saturday. Both games will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and broadcast live on Eagle Radio - KHUT-FM (102.9) on Friday and KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) on Saturday - with Sean Boston calling the action.

Hutchinson had an impressive comeback on Tuesday night, rallying from a 10-point first-half deficit to rout Neosho County 107-63 at the Sports Arena. Monae Duffy had 24 points and Bree Horyna posted her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons garnered 67 rebounds against the Panthers, which ranks No. 3 on the Hutchinson single-game rebounds list.

Labette has gotten off to a tough start with decisive losses to Coffeyville, Independence and Eastern Oklahoma State. Chicago was clinging to a three-point lead with 1:40 remaining when Carolina’s Eddy Pineiro attempted a 59-yard field goal. The ball landed well short.

He left the field in the third quarter of Texas’ 31-24 win at Houston on Oct. 21. Second-year freshman Maalik Murphy has started the last two games in his place and led Texas to a pair of victories.

(AP) — The universal designated hitter has been part of Major League Baseball for two full seasons and, much to the chagrin of some National League traditionalists, the sport has survived and even thrived. In a somewhat surprising development, though, many teams are struggling to get much production from that spot. The next generation of big-bopping DHs like David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas hasn’t materialized, with just three players logging at least 110 games at designated hitter during the 2023 season. That trio includes Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani, Braves slugger Marcell Ozuna and the Nationals’ Joey Meneses

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A devoted group of Bay Area baseball fans are sending “Stay In Oakland” boxes to 15 Major League Baseball team owners, imploring them to vote no on the team's planned relocation to Las Vegas. The group is targetting owners who could be swayed to vote against the proposed move during annual league meetings next week. The list includes Boston's John Henry and the New York Yankees' Hal Steinbrenner. The boxes contain green A's caps, baseball cards featuring the owners' likenesses and a note detailing why they should vote against Las Vegas.

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — Alex Noren has been working hard on his wedge game and Bermuda was the ideal spot for that. Port Royal had no wind and Noren had no problem. He set the tournament record with 11 birdies. It gave him a 61 for a two-shot lead in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. That's his best PGA Tour round by two shots. Adam Long had a 66 and earned a spot in the record book. He hit his first 11 fairways. That gave him 69 in a row dating to Las Vegas to set the PGA Tour record.

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State gave up 22 offensive rebounds and committed 19 turnovers, but found a way to defeat WKU, 71-61, Thursday night in Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State (2-0) was able to overcome an up-and-down game in large part to WKU going 0-for-21 from beyond the arc. It marked the first time an opponent failed to connect on a three-pointer since Loyola Marymount went 0-for-5 on Dec. 22, 2014.

On a night when the Shockers played only seven guys, four of those seven finished in double figures, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7584">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;with 16. Pohto pulled down 11 rebounds to go with 16 points for his first double-double of the season and third career.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/7579">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;was 8-for-10 from the free throw line, finishing with a career-high tying 14 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/harlond-beverly/7587">Harlond Beverly</a>&nbsp;scored all 13 of his points in the second half to go with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/colby-rogers/7582">Colby Rogers</a>&nbsp;added 10 points, while battling foul trouble most of the night.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/quincy-ballard/7586">Quincy Ballard</a>&nbsp;(11) and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/dalen-ridgnal/8757">Dalen Ridgnal</a>&nbsp;(13) both grabbed double digit rebounds. Ridgnal set a new career high with his 13. Ballard also swatted four shots, one shy of a career high.

Wichita State shot 48.1 percent from the floor behind another relatively quiet night from three-point range (4-for-13).A back-and-forth first half saw Wichita State go into halftime trailing, 29-27, but immediately came out on a 7-0 run, forcing a WKU timeout just 2:28 into the half.

Near the 12:00 minute mark, WKU cut the Shockers' lead to 44-40 only to see Wichita State mount an 11-3 run. The margin would stay in double digits over the next 7:00 minutes until back-to-back scores pulled the Hilltoppers within six, 56-50.Five straight points from Beverly immediately made it a 10-point game again.

One last push from WKU in the final 1:30 had the Hilltoppers within six, but a layup and two free throws from Ridgnal essentially put the game away.
