Marlene Ann (Crisler) Thomson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, at her home in Valley Center, Kansas, with her husband of 63 years by her side. She is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the presence of God in Heaven above.

She was born March 11,1937, a daughter of the late Thomas Russel and Mary Olga (Ansley) Crisler.&nbsp;

A 1955 graduate of Rushsylvania High School and a 1963 graduate of Ozark Bible College in Joplin, Missouri, Marlene developed a deep love of study and passion for learning. &nbsp;While an undergraduate student, she not only pursued her interests in Greek and Biblical studies but grew her skills in her love for music (choir) and her practical skills serving as the secretary to former Ozark President, Don Earl Boatman.

While a student at Ozark Bible College, she met and married Joseph Terrill Thomson at the Rushsylvania Church of Christ (now Rush Church) in Rushsylvania, Ohio, on June 17, 1960. After graduation, Joe and Marlene made their family home in Valley Center, Kansas, where they raised four sons: Jim, John, Phillip, and Matthew.

Marlene had so many gifts and talents. Using her Biblical Studies background, she was a true reflection of Jesus as she grew in grace and wisdom, as she taught Women’s Bible Studies and Vacation Bible School for years. She was a true prayer warrior as she sacrificed and served others, giving of herself in so many ways. She even made several dozen Afghan comforters that were sent to Israel to be given to elderly Jewish women by a missionary group in Israel.

Marlene was also a gifted musician and would often be heard singing in the church choir or playing organ/piano for church services or as an accompanist for her husband and others. &nbsp;She even accompanied her son, John, for the Kansas State High School Vocal Solo/Ensemble contest.

She turned her hobbies into beautiful creations as she quilted, crocheted, and cross-stitched. &nbsp;If she wasn’t stitching, you would often find her cooking or baking. Her cinnamon rolls and dinner rolls were sought after at church potlucks. Her recreations of her mother’s chocolate and butterscotch pies were enjoyed by her family. She also read books endlessly as she never tired of learning.

As her family grew, Marlene decided to return to the workplace and took a job with the Walmart company. She began her career as a cashier, and then moved into the fabric/crafts &amp; cards departments where she found great fulfillment not only as an employee, but as a friend to so many.

Marlene’s kind and compassionate spirit will be missed by her family and friends. Spending time with the ones she loved was her passion and will not be forgotten. &nbsp;The family would like to thank the Emergency Services Department of Valley Center for their help and care for her in her final moments of life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Russel and Mary Crisler; sisters Esther (Dale) Jones, June (Kenny) Birt, Norma (Paul) Daum; brothers Charles, Wellington, Welman (Marilyn) Crisler, and her twin brother Merlin Crisler; sister-in-law Marcia Kay Thomson (missionary to Zimbabwe), and brother-in-law Phil Harden.

Marlene is survived by her husband, Joe Thomson, and sons, Jim and Philip Thomson, of Valley Center; son, John (Jill) Thomson of Footville, WI; son, Matthew (Heather) Thomson of High Hill, MO; sister, Mary Lou Harden of Seffner, Florida; sisters-in-law, Mary Kay Crisler of Dayton, Ohio, and Nancy Crisler of Marion, Ohio; grandchildren, Meghan Thomson, Samantha (Carl) Streich, Katie Thomson, Christopher Thomson and Claire Thomson, along with numerous nieces, nephews, their families, and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at Valley Center Christian Church,1801 E 5th St, Valley Center, Kansas on Saturday, October 28th at 10:30 a.m. with Randy Jones, John Thomson, and Dwayne Westerfield officiating. A brief visitation with family will be held at 9:30 a.m. that same morning. Charlotte Faye Wiebe, 71, passed away October 10, 2023 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro. 

 She was born August 1, 1952 in Goessel to George and Mary (Fricke) Friesen.  She married Richard Wiebe April 26, 1992 in Almena, Wisconsin. 

 Survivors include: husband, Richard Wiebe of Tampa; sons, Troy (Marla) Wiebe of Durham, Dalton (Lorna) Wiebe of Durham, Marlin (Bethany) Wiebe of Durham, Karlyn (Jackie) Wiebe of Binger, Oklahoma, Arlyn (Kalynda) Wiebe of Tampa; daughters, Rosalena (Orin) Koehn of New Plymouth, Idaho, Brenda (Joseph) Johnson of Arcadia, Florida; brothers, Carl (Gail) Friesen, Merle (Rosanna) Friesen; sisters, Judy (Harlan) Penner, Joyce (Don) Wenger; 34 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. 

 Predeceased by a brother George Friesen.

Norman Koehn, 92, of Moundridge, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at the Moundridge Manor. He was born on October 5, 1931 in Greensburg, KS to Ben and Katie (Nichols) Koehn. 

He was a member of the United Center Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, rural Galva, Kansas. 

 He was united in marriage to Verbie Jean Unruh on January 11, 1953 in Galva. She survives of the home after 70 years of marriage. 

Other survivors include his children, Connie (Wesley) Ensz of El Mirage, AZ, Janice (Elgin) Koehn of Elba, NE, Cynthia (Lavern) Koehn of Canton, and Anthony (Shana) Koehn of Bowersville, GA; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and brother, Ernie (Twila) Koehn of Moundridge. 

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; and nine siblings. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, October 15, 2023 at United Center Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Galva. Steven (Skip) Von Strohe, 92, passed away peacefully with family present at his home in Marquette, KS the morning of October 9, 2023. Steven was born on March 20, 1931, in Salina, KS, the first son of Louis (Bud) Von Strohe and Twila (Steel) Von Strohe. Steven’s younger brother, Jerry Stuart Von Strohe, was born in July of 1933 and died two years later in July of 1935 from pertussis. Shortly after his younger brother’s death, the family moved from Westfall, Kansas to Boulder, Colorado. Steven grew up in Boulder, Colorado, graduating from high school there. Steven then received a ROTC scholarship that he used at Colorado State University to become the first Von Strohe in the family to attend a university and then graduate from CSU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. The scholarship had a requirement that Steven would serve in a military branch of service for at least 4 years after his schooling was done. Steven chose the Air Force and was to report for pilot training in Albany, Georgia. In his senior year at CSU, Steven met a pretty brunette freshman from Denver, Colorado, Bettie Lu Stills.&nbsp; They fell madly in love, and with Steven headed for the Air Force, they decided to elope on short notice and got married in Raton, New Mexico on March 25, 1954.

Steven reported for duty at Turner Air Force Base as a fully commissioned Lieutenant due to his college training with the ROTC and began his pilot training. He quickly moved from the prop trainer to jets and the T 33. As he was rapidly moving thru flight school, he was approached with an offer to fly bombers. With his shorter stature, he physically met the requirements for the bomber cockpit. He initially said no, but when he found out the bomber he would be training with and flying was the then top-secret Boeing B-47 Stratojet, he jumped at the chance. During the Georgia training, Steven’s first son, Scott, was born in Albany. The training with the bomber moved the family to Roswell, New Mexico where his second son, Steven, was born.&nbsp; Steven moved from training to active duty in Roswell with his mission flying the B-47 bomber fully armed with a nuclear warhead in a holding pattern orbiting above the north pole area. His mission focus was to deliver the payload to the city known as Leningrad at the time. His 3 man crew flew 12 hour shifts always at the ready if the fateful call should come. Steven’s 4 years of service ended in 1958, and despite very generous offers from the Air Force, Skip (His nickname he got as the bomber pilot and commanding officer in the B-47) chose to return to civilian life and return to Denver, Colorado where his third son, Stanton, was born in 1958 and his fourth son, Spence, in 1961. Steven and Bettie moved to Dallas, Texas in 1979 after all the boys had finished high school.

Steven started a Medical Product Sales company in Dallas and when he retired at 65, he passed the business on to his sons. Bettie and Skip relocated to Hide Away, Texas and spent the early retirement years crossing the country in an RV with Hide Away as their base of operations. In 2004, Skip suffered a stroke and the focus moved for Bettie as she became his primary caregiver. Once Skip had rehabbed to the point where he was mobile again, they downsized the RV and with Bettie driving, resumed a limited travel schedule. After almost 57 years of marriage in February 2011, Bettie passed away after a yearlong bout with cancer, and Steven had lost the love of his life.&nbsp; The boys sold the family company, and Stan moved to the old family stomping grounds in Kansas, settling in Marquette, where he bought a house for Dad to spend his final years. Well known around Marquette, Skip could be seen driving his scooter thru the streets and visiting with folks at the Smoky Valley Distillery. Until the end, Skip was loved by all. Known for his love of teaching in his early years and his prolific painting in his later years, Skip established a legacy that will carry far beyond his passing.

Steven (Skip) Von Strohe is survived by his 4 sons Scott, Steve, Stan, and Spence along with their families which include 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Skip was a blessing to us all, and we will always strive to follow his favorite saying “Let’s go to Mexico Dumbo!”

A “Celebration of Life” memorial is in the process of being planned for the Spring of 2024. With this celebration, we will unite Bettie and Skip once again in their final resting place at the Franklin Cemetery in Tescott, Kansas. More information on the specifics of this event will be provided online at a later date.

Steven (Skip) Von Strohe |1931-2023|

Geneva Mae Turnquist, 94, of Lindsborg, KS, peacefully passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023, surrounded by family at Brookdale Senior Assisted Living, Salina.&nbsp; Geneva was a homemaker, partner in the family farming operation, census worker, and election worker.

Geneva was born on July 15, 1929, on the family farm in McPherson, KS, the daughter of Bernard G. and Clara S. (Nelson) Schafer.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School.&nbsp; On October 2, 1948, Geneva was united in marriage to Donald Herman Turnquist in McPherson, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children, Steve, Larry, Bryce, and Donna. Geneva and Don were married for 73 years before his passing on March 9, 2022.&nbsp;

She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lindsborg, UMW, and served on several committees.

Survivors include: four children, Steven (Michele) Turnquist of Austin, TX, Larry (Kathy) Turnquist of Salina, KS, Bryce (Patty) Turnquist of Lindsborg, KS, and Donna (Emery) Wiens of Topeka, KS; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Bernadine Swanson, and brother, Bernard Schafer.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lindsborg.&nbsp; The final resting place will be in the Freemount Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Lee Buehrle, 93, of McPherson, KS, and formerly of Salina, KS, peacefully passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp; She worked as a secretary at Farm Bureau Insurance Agency in Atwood and was an office manager for Marietta, Kellogg &amp; Price Law Office in Salina.

Lee was born on April 24, 1930, in Atwood, KS, the daughter of Herman Mark and Charlotte V. (Shaffer) Rummel.&nbsp; She graduated from Atwood High School in 1948 and attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; On July 31, 1948, Lee was united in marriage to John G. Buehrle in Ellsworth, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two children, Karen and John, II.&nbsp; Lee and John were married for 53 years prior to his passing on May 24, 2002.&nbsp;

Lee bowled in a competitive league in Atwood and was a member of the TOPS Club and KOPS Club in Salina.

Survivors include: two children, Karen Parsons (Daryl) of Burden, KS and John Buehrle, II (DeeAnn) of McPherson, KS; five grandchildren, Gail Bailey (Bryan), Scott Parsons (Lyndsay), Laura Stapleton, Sarah Buehrle Gunay (Ziya Gunay), and John Buehrle, III (Justine); nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Maxine Draper, Floyd Rummel, Carlyle Rummel, and Herman Vern Rummel.

&nbsp;Cherri was born on May 13, 1953, in Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School in 1971.

&nbsp;On September 25, 1976, Cherri was united in marriage to Frank Koehn in McPherson, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons: Trevor and Trenton. &nbsp;

&nbsp;Cherri had a large collection of angel figurines, enjoyed making homemade jewelry, adult coloring books, computer puzzle games and, most of all, visiting and loving people without complaining or a sense of judgment.&nbsp; She was a member of Harmony Christian Church in McPherson, KS.

&nbsp;Survivors include: two children, Trevor Koehn of McPherson, KS, and his wife Alyssa Drury Koehn and their two daughters Clair and Evelyn; and Trenton Koehn of McPherson, KS.; Sisters: Jerilynn Nickel and her extended family; Donna Bartel and extended family; and Brenda Banman and her extended family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cherri and her husband, Frank, had many discussions about medical decisions and funerals. When the time neared for her to enter into the new life, Cherri did not want a funeral or burial but to be cremated. If you would have asked her why, she would have said, “Don’t think of my passing on, but rather celebrate life, starting now!”

William “Bill’ Eugene Debes, 81, died October 9, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. &nbsp;He was born July 7, 1942, in Great Bend, KS, to William N. Debes and Frances (Keeley) Debes.

Bill was a 1960 graduate of Great Bend High School, Great Bend, KS. &nbsp;In 1964, he graduated from Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS. &nbsp;Bill was employed with the Kansas Department of Transportation as an accounting specialist, retiring with 36 years of service.

He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, playing Bunco at the senior center, watching old western movies, playing board and card games with his grandchildren, and volunteering in the community.

Bill’s memberships included the initial council of the Knights of Columbus at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, KS #7279.

On September 20, 1969, he married Joelene Marie Hertach at the Holy Name Catholic Church in rural Bushton, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 54 years of marriage.&nbsp;

Bill is survived by: his wife, Joelene Debes of Hutchinson, KS; children, Dan (Wyndi) Debes of Wichita, KS, and Donna (Russ) Christianson of Saint Johns, FL; grandchildren, Rebecca (Caleb) Rains, Rachel Debes, Reece Debes, Riley Debes, Jessi Christianson, and Jacob Christianson; and sister, Caroline Moeder of Rose Hill, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Herman Debes.

William “Bill’ Eugene Debes |1942-2023|

Keith Howard, 95, a resident of Great Bend Brookdale Assisted Living at time of death, but lifelongresident in western Reno County near Sylvia, Kansas, passed away on October 6, 2023.

He was born on February 21, 1928, north of Sylvia, Kansas, to Paul and Blanche Howard. Keith graduated from Sylvia High School. 

After graduating, Keith attended McPherson College and Fort Hays State College for 1 year each. He played basketball at McPherson College and was on the practice team of the Fort Hays State football team. He then joined the Navy for 4 years and was stationed at Norfolk,Virginia. While in the service he served as a clerk in the office of the Destroyer Division Commander on the destroyer Allen M. Sumner. 

Once back in Kansas, he married Josephine Adella Cowgill (Adella, to all) also from Sylvia, on December 25, 1956, in Hutchinson, Kansas. They enjoyed being married for nearly 63 years. After returning home from the Navy, Keith worked in the oil field as a driller at night and a farmer by day. He and Adella farmed together in the Sylvia area for nearly 57 years. 

Besides farming,Keith enjoyed hunting, playing 10-point pitch and dominos, and watching KU basketball and K-State football games. He and Adella looked forward to attending the National Junior College Basketball tournament in Hutchinson each year. They also attended church at Pleasant Hill Church of the Nazarenein Sylvia and First Nazarene Church in Hutchinson. He loved getting together with family to enjoy a good, home-cooked meal followed by some games.

Keith is survived by his four children, Michel (Rhett) Jahelka of Little Mountain, SC; Melanie (Bryan) Mosier of Ellinwood, KS; Lindy (Jaime) Howard of Alden, KS; and Shane (Crissy) Howard of Denton, TX. Also surviving are his 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Preceding Keith in death are his wife, Adella; parents, Paul and Blanche Howard; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Twila (Fred) Yoder and Pauline (Clarence) Huffman; and a grandson, Nathan Daniel Franco.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Pleasant Hill Church of the Nazarene,Sylvia, with Pastor Steve Gill officiating.

Raul Alberto Reza-Lujan, 36, of Hutchinson died October 8, 2023. He was born June 9, 1987, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Rafael and Yolanda (Lujan) Reza.

Raul graduated from Hutchinson High School in 2006, and was currently working in commercial construction at Mark Borecky Construction, Hutchinson. He developed a passion for barbering and attended 21st Street Barber College in Wichita, earning his barber license, after which he decided to make his part time career, cutting family and friends hair.

Aside from cutting hair, Raul also enjoyed riding bikes, playing soccer and golfing. Above all, there was nothing more he loved to do then to spend time with his family, especially his two children.

On May 13, 2014, he married Allison Rene Castor, in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his children, Giovanni and Ruby Reza; parents, Rafael and Yolanda Reza; sister, Carolina Reza; and niece, Aracely Johnson, all of Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Mary L. “Vicki” Davis, 87, died October 9, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born October 30, 1935, in Pratt, to Marten and Ruth (Shepherd) Jones.

Vicki worked in many different places that she enjoyed. She was a cashier in the cafeteria at Hutchinson High School, ticket taker for the Kansas State Fair, a green house attendant for Stutzman’s, and she retired as a clerk at Rainbo Bakery. On February 2, 1957, Vicki married Donald L. Davis Sr. in Hutchinson. They shared 46 years before he passed away on July 4, 2004.

She is survived by: daughter, Terri Brungardt, Hutchinson; son, Don Davis Jr. (Paula), Hutchinson; daughter, Angie Wilson (Randy), Wichita; seven grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Vickie was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and five siblings.

She retired after many years of working for Creason Corrugating and machinery.

Roxana met the love of her life Herbert Rollings in 1964. They were married on August 31, 1967 and have treasured their 56 years together.&nbsp; They were blessed with two daughters, Tina and Misty. Roxana and Herbert raised their family in the Wichita area where they have remained all these years. Their deep love and devotion was to their family.

She is survived by her husband Herbert, daughters Tina Lubber (Robert) and Misty Kegley (Bob Scott), brother Ronald Friedman, 8 beautiful grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, many other family and friends.

She was born March 20, 1956, in Farmington, NM, the daughter of Melvin and Rosemary Brown Gabehart. A resident of Hutchinson most of her life, she had been a dietary manager for Good Samaritan Society for 22 years and for Golden Plains Nursing Home for 5 years. In 1973 she married Benjamin Vincent. They later divorced and he passed away in 2022. She later married Tony Keene in 1989. He passed away in 2001. Barbara enjoyed playing pool, fishing, loved clowns, and had worked at the Kansas State Fair for over 20 years. She was a liver transplant survivor.

She is survived by her daughter, Stacy (Jason) Sisler, Hutchinson; a brother, Dennis Gabehart, Hutchinson; and 2 grandchildren, Briana Vincent and Davonte Neely.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; and a brother, Alan Gabehart.

Gerald R. Sweeden, 73, died October 7, 2023, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born January 23, 1950, in Yale, OK. He was a graduate of Russell High School. He had served as a cook in the United States Army for over 20 years. He then worked at Tyson, Deluxe Tank, and Cessna. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and enjoyed reading. On September 23, 1973, he married Karen Hathaway. She died December 27, 2022.

Norman F. Tennyson 82 died October 9, 2023, at Newton Medical Center. He was born August 3, 1941, in Wichita, Kansas to David and Vivian (Hanes) Tennyson. On April 6, 1963, he married Sharon Ratzloff at Valley Center, Kansas and she survives of the home.

Norman served his country in the U.S. Army. He was retired as a assembler from Beech Aircraft in Wichita working nearly 38 years.&nbsp; He enjoyed motorcycle riding in his younger years and spending time with his wife driving around the area and exploring. One of his favorite things to do was to drive to breakfast places, he especially enjoyed the Carriage Crossing in Yoder. He was known for leaving $2 bills as tips. Family was important to Norman, and he looked forward to spending time with his loving family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of the home; 2 daughters Monica Spreier and Melissa Tennyson; 1 sister Karen Browning; 2 grandchildren Cameron and Courtney.

Ellen Stucky, 95, of Moundridge, Kansas, went Home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, October 9, 2023 at Mercy Hospital. She was born on October 29, 1927 in rural Moundridge, the daughter of Jonas H. and Anna (Kaufman) Vogt.

Between her 8th grade and freshman year, she recognized her need to confess her sins, repent, and ask God for forgiveness. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized and became a member of the Eden Mennonite Church in Moundridge.

She graduated from Moundridge High School with the class of 1946.

Ellen was united in marriage to Alfred Stucky on August 22, 1946 in Moundridge. He preceded her in death on February 12, 2015.

Ellen was a devoted homemaker, assisting Alfred on their farm and at the Central Kansas Hatchery for many years. Ellen taught Bible school and volunteered with the Mary Martha group. Every Friday for several years, Ellen and Alfred would be found folding church bulletins in the Eden Church office.

She is survived by her three sons, Darrell (Jennifer) Stucky of Katy, TX, Harlan (Joyce) Stucky of Richmond, MO, and Timothy (Beverly) Stucky of Hutchinson, KS; sister, Velma (James) Neufeld of Bloomington, MN; five granddaughters, Kimberly (T.J.) Jung, Michelle (Jed) Wolkins, Christine (Chuck) Chapman, Megan Stucky and Kara Stucky; and five great-grandchildren.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and six siblings, Weldon Vogt, Letha Ediger, Marlin Vogt, Kenneth Vogt, Evelyn Goering, and Margie Kaufman.

Suzanne graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956, and received her bachelor’s degree from Kansas University. &nbsp;She was an active member of the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary, serving as a past president and volunteer coordinator. In addition, Suzanne served on the board for Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and was active in Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson.

On December 30, 1961, she married Charles N. Brown, Jr., in Hutchinson. &nbsp;He died October 23, 2011, just a few months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.&nbsp;

Suzanne is survived by: &nbsp;son, Todd Brown (Heather) of Hutchinson; daughter, Heather Holland of Wichita; grandchildren, Bretley Brown (MacKenzi), Easton Brown, Averie Brown, Eric Holland (Leah), Hollyann Schon (Andrew), and Haley Holland; and four great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Gary F. Chaffee, age 84, passed away on October 9, 2023.&nbsp; He was born on June 8, 1939 in Newton. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Claudia Rose Justice Chaffee, son Paul and daughter-in-law Shellie Lynn Foulk Chaffee, grand children: Kyle Allan Chaffee and wife Diana, Sgt Caleb Chaffee, and Reagan Chaffee. Great Grandchildren Jasmyne Shelby Chaffee, Ariana Norris Chaffee, Kyle Allan Chaffee Jr., Avery Lynn Brandt and Payton Bailey Kilbourn.&nbsp; He is also survived by brother Myron G. Chaffee and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents James F. Chaffee and Lora Norrine Keady Chaffee, son Michael D. Chaffee, brothers James F. Chaffee III and Daniel Kent Chaffee and also by numerous Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

He attended HS in Redondo Beach, CA, and took advantage of the inexpensive college tuition in CA public colleges. He was subsequently hired by the City of Los Angeles to work as a lab technician, performing bacteriological, chemical and radiological testing.

In 1962 he received an invitation to join a Peace Corps project in the San Francisco Valley of Brazil. He was located in the town of Juazeiro in the state of Bahia. Returning from Brazil in late

1963. He enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard not long after returning from Brazil.

He was employed by Kinder Mfg. Co (a Division of Congoleum Corp.) in 1965 in the sales dept. He took a leave of absence when his unit was activated and sent to Ft. Carson, CO.

In 1968 he was deployed to Viet Nam where he was attached to the 173rd&nbsp;Airborne at LZ English and&nbsp; LZ Uplift, which were located along the coast North of Qui Nhon.&nbsp; Later he was attached to the 4th&nbsp;Division near Kon Tum in the central highlands.

When he returned from Viet Nam he resumed his career at Kinder Mfg. in Newton as Sales Manager.&nbsp; In 1970 he was asked to relocate to the Kings Mountain, North Carolina plant as General Manager.&nbsp; He served in that capacity until 1975 when he was asked to return to Newton as the General Manager.&nbsp; In 1986 the Newton plant was closed and he declined an offer to relocate to a plant in Pennsylvania, opting instead to open his own plant in Newton, Lifestyle Interiors.&nbsp; That company reorganized in the mid 90’s and became Heartland Bedding.&nbsp; In 2003 the plant was closed and Gary chose to retire.&nbsp; He worked several part time jobs from his retirement until 2020.

Interests throughout his life were varied.&nbsp; During his time in California he learned to sail and enjoyed it very much.&nbsp; Sailing on the ocean was much different than sailing on windy Kansas lakes though.&nbsp; Genealogy became a passion and he was always researching his family tree.&nbsp; Business trips and vacations gave him the means to take long walks through old cemeteries looking for the grave site of an ancestor that he never met or an opportunity to meet with a long lost cousin or other family member.&nbsp; He was the driving force behind many dinners and get-togethers with distant relatives.&nbsp; He didn’t know a stranger and even into his 70’s would pick up the occasional hitch hiker only because he remembered thumbing his way around Los Angeles in his youth.&nbsp; Gary was a 4th&nbsp;degree member of the Knights of Columbus and truly enjoyed the fellowship that he shared with his brother Knights.&nbsp; He will be missed by many.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 4, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Newton with The Reverend Andrew Bergkamp, Celebrant and The Reverend James Mainzer Con-Celebrant. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 6:00 p.m., Friday, October 13, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Casket will be open at the Church for one hour prior to the Rosary and the family will receive friends following the Rosary in the Church Parish Hall. Burial will be in The Greenwood Cemetery Newton with Military Honors.

 </figure>Gary F. Chaffee, age 84, passed away on October 9, 2023.&nbsp; He was born on June 8, 1939 in Newton. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Claudia Rose Justice Chaffee, son Paul and daughter-in-law Shellie Lynn Foulk Chaffee, grand children: Kyle Allan Chaffee and wife Diana, Sgt Caleb Chaffee, and Reagan Chaffee. Great Grandchildren Jasmyne Shelby Chaffee, Ariana Norris Chaffee, Kyle Allan Chaffee Jr., Avery Lynn Brandt and Payton Bailey Kilbourn.&nbsp; He is also survived by brother Myron G. Chaffee and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents James F. Chaffee and Lora Norrine Keady Chaffee, son Michael D. Chaffee, brothers James F. Chaffee III and Daniel Kent Chaffee and also by numerous Aunts, Uncles and cousins.He attended HS in Redondo Beach, CA, and took advantage of the inexpensive college tuition in CA public colleges. He was subsequently hired by the City of Los Angeles to work as a lab technician, performing bacteriological, chemical and radiological testing.In 1962 he received an invitation to join a Peace Corps project in the San Francisco Valley of Brazil. He was located in the town of Juazeiro in the state of Bahia. Returning from Brazil in late1963. He enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard not long after returning from Brazil.He was employed by Kinder Mfg. Co (a Division of Congoleum Corp.) in 1965 in the sales dept. He took a leave of absence when his unit was activated and sent to Ft. Carson, CO.In 1968 he was deployed to Viet Nam where he was attached to the 173rd&nbsp;Airborne at LZ English and&nbsp; LZ Uplift, which were located along the coast North of Qui Nhon.&nbsp; Later he was attached to the 4th&nbsp;Division near Kon Tum in the central highlands.When he returned from Viet Nam he resumed his career at Kinder Mfg. in Newton as Sales Manager.&nbsp; In 1970 he was asked to relocate to the Kings Mountain, North Carolina plant as General Manager.&nbsp; He served in that capacity until 1975 when he was asked to return to Newton as the General Manager.&nbsp; In 1986 the Newton plant was closed and he declined an offer to relocate to a plant in Pennsylvania, opting instead to open his own plant in Newton, Lifestyle Interiors.&nbsp; That company reorganized in the mid 90’s and became Heartland Bedding.&nbsp; In 2003 the plant was closed and Gary chose to retire.&nbsp; He worked several part time jobs from his retirement until 2020.Interests throughout his life were varied.&nbsp; During his time in California he learned to sail and enjoyed it very much.&nbsp; Sailing on the ocean was much different than sailing on windy Kansas lakes though.&nbsp; Genealogy became a passion and he was always researching his family tree.&nbsp; Business trips and vacations gave him the means to take long walks through old cemeteries looking for the grave site of an ancestor that he never met or an opportunity to meet with a long lost cousin or other family member.&nbsp; He was the driving force behind many dinners and get-togethers with distant relatives.&nbsp; He didn’t know a stranger and even into his 70’s would pick up the occasional hitch hiker only because he remembered thumbing his way around Los Angeles in his youth.&nbsp; Gary was a 4th&nbsp;degree member of the Knights of Columbus and truly enjoyed the fellowship that he shared with his brother Knights.&nbsp; He will be missed by many.Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 4, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Newton with The Reverend Andrew Bergkamp, Celebrant and The Reverend James Mainzer Con-Celebrant. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 6:00 p.m., Friday, October 13, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Casket will be open at the Church for one hour prior to the Rosary and the family will receive friends following the Rosary in the Church Parish Hall. Wayne Edward Venso, 78, of Newton, Kansas, passed away at home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

He was born in Newton, Kansas on April 11, 1945, to Neil &amp; Myrtle (Theander) Venso, and spent his entire life serving his community of friends. Wayne attended Newton Public Schools before graduating from barber college followed by a career of 59 years cutting hair, giving away donuts, and telling the worst jokes.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father Neil, mother Myrtle, sister Virginia Soyez, and brother-in-law Donald Keasling, and is survived by his loving wife, Brenda and their fur baby Cheyenne, his son, Mikall (Tami Goldman), daughter Melisha Corbus (Michael Corbus), sister Marjorie Keasling, and brother-in-law, Joe Soyez, as well as eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Celebration will be held Monday, October 9, 2023, from 3 to 6 pm at Salem United Methodist Church, 115 Old Main St, Newton, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the National Park Foundation.

Our hearts are heavy at the peaceful passing of our father “Gene” (Papa) Orville Eugene Titus on September 29, 2023 at the age of 92. He was a loyal, caring father. He had many friends and was a well-loved member of the community in Newton Kansas where he was born and still lived.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Ann (Dorey) Titus of 55 yrs, his grandson Uriah Job Titus, his great granddaughter Kilar Rain Gillispie, his father Orville F. Titus and mother Opal (McFarlane) Titus.&nbsp;

He leaves behind his wife of 16 years Trudy (Anderson) Titus.&nbsp;He also leaves behind his 3 sons, Bill Titus of Newton, John (Margie) Titus of Newton, Robb (Mary Beth) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, 9 grandchildren, Thain Titus, Cree (Josh) Gillispie, Maisha (Lance) Dible, Season (James) Lentz, Starla (Jared Schmitz) Titus, Jasmine (Ian Schmidt) Titus, Lena (Carl) Edwards, Taylor Titus, Spencer Titus, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter, brother Michael Fry, sister Michelle Cloud and several nephews and nieces.

Gene owned and worked at Gene’s Shoes on Main St. in Newton for over 40 years, helping people by letting them do layaways and payment plans. He sold many steel toed boots to the railroad workers and he gave shoe boxes for the Christmas goodies that went to the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.&nbsp;

He welcomed neighborhood kids and foster children into their home on Pine St. for many years.

He designed and built his own home in the country, which was a beautiful place where he loved having his family and friends come and gather.&nbsp;He loved to fish, boat and ski. He was a very active sports enthusiast and coached his sons many baseball and basketball teams. He also played, managed and sponsored Gene’s Shoes slow pitch softball teams for many years. He participated in bowling, basketball and softball well into his 50's and 60's. His love of sports started in school where his Newton High basketball team won the state championship in 1949.&nbsp;

The family will have a gathering/celebration of life for anyone that would like to pay their respects, at The Chapel at Paramount Community Living Center, (corner of S. Poplar and SW 14th) 1:00-3:00, November 12th.

Orville Eugene Titus |2023|

Nadine M. Unruh, 89, of Moundridge, Kansas, passed away Friday, October 6, 2023 at Newton Medical Center. She was born May 29, 1934 in rural Galva, the daughter of Ervin and Adeline (Nightingale) Becker.

Nadine was united in marriage to Robert D. Unruh on November 30, 1952 at Lone Tree Mennonite Church. He passed away February 4, 2010.

Nadine was a homemaker. She was a member of Gospel Mennonite Church.

Nadine is survived by two sons, Jim (Sherril) Unruh and Russell (Janet) Unruh all of Moundridge; three daughters, Nevelyn (Ronnie) Mastre of Del Norte, Colorado, Nancy (Doug) Unruh of Halstead, and Jennifer (Verlynn) Koehn of Galva; brother, John Becker of Hesston; sisters, Wilma Nightingale and Deola Wenger, both of Moundridge, and Judy (Harold) Koehn of Montezuma; 20 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; one brother; and three sisters.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2023 at Gospel Mennonite Church, Moundridge, with burial to follow at the Lone Tree Cemetery. &nbsp; Leonard Eugene Wallsten, born November 24, 1937, in Hutchinson, KS, passed away peacefully October 5, 2023 in Buhler, Kansas.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Minnie Wallsten, daughter, Judith Ann Lazenby, and sister, Marilyn Avery.

He is survived by his son, Mike (Jean Ann) Wallsten, daughter, Deanna Cook, brother, Jim (Mary) Wallsten, grandchildren, Billy (Jackie) Lazenby, Ashley (Ray) Lazenby, Valerie (Kyle) Osborn, Caleb (Maddie) Cook, 9 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Leonard was a lifelong resident of Hutchinson, Kansas. He served in the army for many years, becoming a welder foreman at Farmland after discharging. He started his own trucking company in 1972, where he stayed until retirement.
