Brenda Kay Jensen, 72, of Hutchinson, KS, died July 1, 2025, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born March 22, 1953, in Hutchinson, to John T. and R. Byrdene (Adams) Perkins.

Brenda graduated from Central Christian High School. She worked in food service for many years and was kitchen manager at Golden Plains Health Care Center and Dillon Living Center before she retired. Brenda loved watching cooking shows and Christmas movies year-round. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Brenda was a member of Crossroads Christian Church.

On January 5, 1976, she married Lloyd Jensen Jr. in Hutchinson. He died July 24, 2001.

Brenda is survived by: her daughter-in-law, Michelle Jensen; grandsons, Jonathan Jensen and fiancé Holli Wyatt, Dylan Jensen and partner Jaden Whitaker, Braeden Jensen, Camden Jensen, Payten Jensen; great-grandson, Zephyr Whitaker; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; son, Lloyd Jensen III; siblings, Delaine Perkins, Sheldon Perkins, Delwin Perkins, Carolyn Wilk, and Mary Jo Trejo.

Cremation has taken place and private family graveside service will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may sign her memorial book between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.

Maegan Rae Byard, 46, died June 30, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born November 6, 1978, in Lyons, to Dennis Lee and Vickie J. (Johannsen) Byard.

Maegan attended both Hutchinson High School and Buhler High School. &nbsp;Known for her competitive spirit and drive, she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing darts, and searching for rocks in the river. &nbsp;Maegan was an avid thrifter, and had a special talent for turning thrifting finds into amazing and beautiful décor.&nbsp;

Maegan is survived by: children, Noah Delgado, Emily Delgado, and Maylee Marie Morales; mother, Vickie J. Byard; granddaughter, Kalani Lee Ruiz; companion, Matthew Morales; brothers, Chris Byard (Nikkee) and Matt Byard (Christina), all of Hutchinson; and nieces and nephews, Avery Byard, Korree Byard, Tanner Byard, Jace Byard, and Ada Byard.

Dr. Ivan Schrock, DVM, 97, passed away June 20, 2025, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born October 18, 1927, to parents, Joni T. and Anna (Yoder) Schrock, in their home, near Yoder, KS.

Ivan was the 2nd of 4 children. He had a typical country childhood, playing with siblings and Amish and Mennonite cousins, walking or riding their horse to the near by Daisy Grade&nbsp;School, taking care of the animals, and when old enough, assisting his parents with the farm duties. Ivan attended Haven High School for 2 years before transferring to Hesston Academy, Hesston, his junior and senior years and graduating in 1946. &nbsp;

In 1948, Ivan married Joyce Cooprider. To this union, Claire and Kristine were born. The young family lived on a farm in McPherson County, where Ivan was a dairy farmer and raised grain. In 1960, the farm was sold as the family moved to Manhattan, KS, for Ivan to attend Veterinary School at Kansas State University. After years of hard work and dedication, he graduated in 1966. He accepted the offer of a partnership with Associated Veterinary Service, South Hutchinson, where he worked as veterinarian for many years. &nbsp;

Ivan later married Paulette Lainson in 1976. He grew his large animal practice at AVS, and moved back to the “home place” where they traveled and farmed.

&nbsp;Ivan retired from the veterinary practice in 1990, and returned to full time farming. He began his collection of tractors (especially John Deere), widened his study of American and World History, attended ALL home KSU football games and never missed the class of ’66 vet reunions. They were also long-time members of Park Place Church, Hutchinson. &nbsp;

Ivan is survived by: his daughters, Claire (Mark) Foy and Kristine (Dick Goforth) Schrock; stepdaughters, Gail Estes, Linda Marsh, and Susan (Clarence) Nolte; stepson, Eric Lainson; 3 grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Alta Schrock.

He was preceded in death by: his wife of 46 years, Paulette Lainson; parents; brother, Lawrence; sisters and their spouses, Edith and Donovan Cooprider and Glenna and Tom Egli; daughter-in-law, Monna Lainson; and former wife, Joyce Schrock Cook.

Lawanda Mae (Durr) Frees, 94, passed away June 30, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born May 20, 1931, to Leonard and Leona (Schroeder) Durr, in Ellsworth County, on the family farm, near Holyrood, KS.

Lawanda was baptized June 14, 1931, and confirmed March 25, 1945, in the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, KS. &nbsp;She graduated from Holyrood High School in 1949, and married Howard Frees on August 20, 1950, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood. &nbsp;Lawanda considered herself a homemaker, but she was so much more. &nbsp;For 43 years, she worked alongside her husband on the farm. &nbsp;

In 1993, they retired from farming and moved to Hutchinson. &nbsp;Lawanda became active in &nbsp;Lysle Rishel Post #68 American Legion Auxiliary in Hutchinson, RSVP, Elmdale Senior Center, Delos V. Smith Sr. Center and the State Fair Promenaders Square Dance Club. &nbsp;In addition, Lawanda was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, helping with funeral dinners and the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League). &nbsp;

Lawanda is survived by: &nbsp;her two sons, Lyle Frees (Joyce) of Ellsworth and Loren Frees (Tina) of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her parents; her husband of 66 years, Howard; son, Larry Frees; brothers, Dale Durr and Don Durr; and grandsons-in-law, Jason Tripp and Drew Ekart.

Kimeron Ray Teter, 72, passed away on June 29, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on December 9, 1952.

He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1970. Kimeron worked most recently for Seat King at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility for the past four years. Before that he worked for Seat King/Electrex Inc. for 15 years, and prior to that over 30 years at Consolidated Manufacturing.

On July 1, 1974, he marred the love of his life. They shared 52 wonderful years together and raised three children: Jason Teter, Justin Teter, and Jaime Hall.

Kimeron enjoyed gardening, fishing, building bird houses, weightlifting, listening to blues music and traveling to attend various concerts and collect autographs from musicians and around the world, an occasional trip to casino and dishing out the occasional can of whoop ass!

He took great pride in his work and especially valued the time he spent mentoring prison employees of Electrex/Seat King. He treated everyone with kindness and respect, never seeing anyone less than himself.

Kimeron's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and helped over the years.  He will be loved and missed by many.

Survivors include his wife Sherrie Teter, three kids, Jason and Anya (St. Peters, MO), Justin and girlfriend Jessica (Hutchinson), Jaime and husband Christoper (Hutchinson), 6 grandkids, Riley and fiancé Chelsy, Brooklynn, Collin, Noah, Lauryn, Aleks, one great grandson Oaklyn, five siblings, Shirley Kern, Kevin Teter, Kandee McGill and husband Mark, Kasha Teter, Karma Teter and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his brother Steve Teter, mother Darlene Teter, father Charles Teter.

A funeral service will be held at Old Mission Heritage, 528 N. Main, Thursday, July 3rd at 2:00PM

Nelda Hughlene Gillespie, 83, of Chase, Kansas, passed away June 29, 2025, at her home, with her family by her side. She was born January 27, 1942, in Okemah, Oklahoma, the daughter of Guy and Donnie (Lamm) Kinslow. 

She graduated from Lyons High School, with the class of 1960, and later received her LPN license from McPherson Nursing School in 1978. She worked for the Rice County Hospital as a LPN for several years. 

She was a member of the Chase Baptist Church, Striped Bass Association of Kansas and Women’s bowling league of Lyons. She enjoyed quilting, hunting and fishing. On June 25, 1960, Hughlene was united in marriage with Curtis Everett Gillespie in Chase. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2024. 

She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Klaus Kinslow; sister, Carol Harris; and brother-in-law, Dennis Yeubanks. Hughlene is survived by her three children, Pam Patterson and husband Chuck of St. John, KS, Carl Gillespie and wife Rhonda of Chase, KS, and Rhonda Flickinger and husband Brad of Sterling, KS; brother, Kenneth Kinslow and wife Sandy of Okemah, OK; two sisters, Ardith Dillard and husband Cliff of Wichita, KS, Barbara Yeubanks of Cromwell, OK; seven grandchildren, Charlie Patterson, Dustin Patterson (Kayla), Brandi Larson (Keith), Tony Andrews (Jessica), Michelle Mawhirter (Cole), Kyle Gillespie (Rebekah), and Kacey Andrews (Kylie Boele); sixteen great-grandchildren; and lifelong friend Max Tharp. 

Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Chase Springdale Cemetery, with Pastor Nickia Larsen officiating. Shawn Edwin Morgan, 56, died June 22, 2025, at his home in Hutchinson, KS. He was born July 11, 1968, to his biological parents, in Beaver Falls, PA, and at 8 months old was lovingly adopted by Carl Edwin and Sandra Lee (Porter) Morgan.

Shawn was a member of the class of 1987 Wasilla Warriors, and graduated from Burchell High School in 1988, Wasilla, AK, as the first-ever graduate. Shortly after, he attended Western Culinary Institute in Portland, OR, he fulfilled his dream and became a chef in 1997.

Shawn worked as a chef for the North Slope Borough, in Nuiqsut Village, AK. &nbsp;After years of hard work, Shawn opened up and operated the Shoreline Restaurant in Wasilla, AK. He was an amazing cook and could cook just about anything. In his earlier years, Shawn played for the “Mat-Su-Sabers” hockey team. The 1985 season was unforgettable, as the team earned second place in the nation. He coached for the Valley Blades hockey team, and won the Alaska State Championship in 2001.

Shawn was an avid naturalist who loved gardening and fishing. He also had a curious eye for natures oddities, often collecting unique rocks, weathered sticks, and even dried up snake skin for his many creative projects. He was a creative man who found joy in crafting unique musical instruments, sharing his favorite music, discussing with people about the meaning of dreams and just being a “goofball.” Because, of his big heart, Shawn valued human interaction, connecting deeply with those around him and genuinely caring for people, even more than himself. He was the ultimate hype-man, celebrating every little victory of those he loved. Above all, Shawn was driven by his love for family. His greatest joy came from simply being surrounded by the people he cared about- cracking jokes, lending a hand, and bringing light wherever he went. He will be remembered as a loving father, Papa Shawn, brother, and friend. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Shawn is survived by: his sisters, Heather McVeigh and Kelly Abbott; stepson, Trevor Jones; children, Tabitha Morris, Nicole Morgan (Effie Peters), Edwin (Brooklyn Vasquez) Morgan, and Josiah Morgan; granddaughter, Emilia Morris; honorary son, Daniel Melgoza; and his beloved dog, Nora.&nbsp;

&nbsp;A proud Kansan with a joyful spirit and a deep Christian faith, Kathy lived each day with kindness, laughter, and a contagious sense of fun. A true kid at heart, Kathy was known for her big hugs, bigger smile, and the jokes she always had ready—no matter the occasion. Whether sharing stories, flipping through true crime books, or soaking up the sun outdoors, she found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. She had an adventurous soul, never one to pass up a spontaneous trip, and always the first to say “yes” to new experiences.

Kathy wore many hats in her life—working the land as a farmer, and later as a dedicated administrative assistant in the aerospace and defense industry. But her favorite title by far was “Grandma.” Her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was boundless, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Kathy is survived by her devoted partner of 25 years, Chaz Green of Mesa, AZ; her siblings Debbie Brauer of Wichita, KS, Sondra Collins of Las Vegas, NV, and Cindy (Hector Martinez) Collins of Tempe, AZ; her sons Chris (Nadine) Bontrager of Phoenix, AZ and Bo (Sarah) Bontrager of Parker, CO; six grandchildren—Caleb (Selena), Davin, Natalie, Hannah, Caiden, and Hayden; and two great-grandchildren—Aurora and Draiden. She leaves behind countless memories and a legacy of laughter, love, and light.

Sherry Anita Piland, 73, of Hutchinson, died June 27, 2025, at her home. She was born October 4, 1951, in Falls City, NE, to Thomas A. and Irma M. (Goddard) Runyan.

Sherry attended Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. She worked at Sara Lee Baking Co. for over 23 years until retirement. After retirement, Sherry enjoyed working at Stutzman’s Greenhouse, Smith’s Market, and Hutchinson High School. She also enjoyed doing crafts, crosswords puzzles, baking, cooking, gardening, and yardwork. Sherry was a dog lover and loved spending time with her family. She was a member of BCTGM Local 218.

On June 2, 2001, Sherry married Gerald C. Piland, in Las Vegas, NV. He died March 22, 2005.

She is survived by: her sons, Larry Miller Jr. (Julie Hinton) of Hayes, VA, Brian Miller (Joanne) of Hutchinson; granddaughters, Alaina Miller of Yorktown, VA, Alix Miller, Karsin Miller, both of Lawrence, KS; grandson, Korey Miller of Midlothian, VA; great-grandchildren, Sylas Meekins, Eleanor Miller, Alora Miller; Larry Jr. and Brian’s father, Larry Miller Sr., of Hutchinson; and beloved fur baby, Rosie.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Mike Runyan.

Donna Lea Goodrick, 92, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Legend Senior Living, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp;

Donna was born on February 16, 1933, in Wakita, Oklahoma, the daughter of Harold D. and Lottie V. (Webb) Walker. &nbsp;On June 19, 1949, she married Arlis D. Goodrick in Medford, Oklahoma, to this union they were blessed with three children, Rick, Roger and Rhonda. &nbsp;Donna had worked as an office manager for a medical clinic for over 19 years before retiring. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband Arlis on April 8, 1985, parents Harold and Lottie Walker, a brother, Dale Walker, a sister, Lois Dorsett and a son, Rick Goodrick.&nbsp;

Donna is survived by her two children, Roger (Clarinda) Goodrick and Rhonda (DeWayne) Lock all of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Jeffrey D. Loane, 86, husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Campbell Loane, died June 23, 2025, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Born August 17,1938 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late J. Bruce and Orphea Lucille Loane. &nbsp;

He was the former Co-Owner and manager of a Fishing Resort and was employed by various Corrections and Social Service Agencies in Kentucky and Kansas. He received his BA from Centre College, and MSW from Washington University of St. Louis. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors include: two sons, Jeff Loane, Jr., and Martin Loane both of Burgin; and one daughter, Cynthia Sheldon of Hutchinson, Kansas. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; daughter, Christi Elizabeth Phillips; and brother, Alan Loane.

Private Services will be held at the Burgin Memorial Gardens, Burgin Kentucky.

Bill graduated from Fairfield High School in 1972. He went on to be a commercial vehicle operator for Architectural Millwork, Groendyke Transport and Ramsey Oil. Bill also worked at KMW Ltd in Sterling. Bill was a softball umpire for over 25 years where he worked with high schools, colleges, and many tournaments. &nbsp;He was a basketball referee for over 20 years. &nbsp;He truly enjoyed sports of all kinds and coached several basketball and softball teams.

Bill’s greatest love and dedication was his family. He could often be found working in the yard and mowing. Bill enjoyed going to flea markets and estate sales. &nbsp;A favorite for him was the search for old vinyl records that could be difficult to find.&nbsp;

On August 15, 1981, Bill married Terri Brown in Hutchinson. They were married nearly 44 years before his death.&nbsp;

Bill is survived by: his beloved wife, Terri Proffitt of Hutchinson; children, Katie (DJ) Heimerman of Murdock, KS, and Ben (Sabrina) Proffitt of Park City, KS; adored grandchildren, Maelynn and Myles J Proffitt; sisters, Dian Hodges and Amy Sloan; in-laws, Dale (Deonna) Brown, Judy Niehoff, Susan Adkins, Mark (Edna) Brown, Debra Palmer, Brenda Brown, Annabel Stewart, Todd (Kristie) Brown, Lori (Kevin) Olson; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Jerry Gene Stanton, 90, formerly of Marshalltown, IA, died June 23, 2025, at his home in Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born August 19, 1934, in Leavenworth, KS to Clarence and Rosemary (Grabenbauer) Stanton.

Jerry retired as an over-the-road truck driver for Yellow Freightline, Liberal, KS. &nbsp;He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, and listening to classic country music. &nbsp;Jerry looked forward each week to playing pool with his buddies at the Elmdale Park Senior Center. &nbsp;Above all, Jerry was always there for his family, loving them unconditionally through all the peaks and valleys in their lives. &nbsp;He was more than just a grandfather; he was someone who his grandchildren admired.&nbsp;

Jerry is survived by: &nbsp;son, Tom Stanton (Marlene) of Mountain Home, AR; daughter, Helen Wilkey of Hutchinson; sisters, Donna Hoing of Marshalltown, IA and Linda Theissen (Jerry) of Toledo, IA; grandchildren, Tina Stanton, Christy Miller, Jeff Ferneau, Robin Huiett, and Derek Griblin; nine great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

Patrick David McLain passed away on May 26th, 2025, in Shoreline, WA due to complications of Huntington’s Disease. Born on January 17th, 1950, in Hutchinson, KS, he was the youngest of four children of James T. McLain and Juanita (Kennedy) F. McLain.

Pat pursued his education with dedication, attending Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Junior College, the University of Kansas, and last at the University of Washington, where he earned his master's in electrical engineering in 1977. His career at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration began soon thereafter, where he participated in oceanic research, designing and building circuit boards for studies in the Pacific Ocean. He worked with an amazing, tight, productive group at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Pat often traveled aboard NOAA ships, deploying, and maintaining research instruments throughout the region. He received an award in Washington DC for his work. His work brought him great fulfillment, and he retired after an accomplished 38-year career.

In 1973, Pat married Karen Wilson, and a few years later settled in the Seattle area. Two children were adopted, Kelly and Jae, completing the family. A devoted family, Pat cherished his time traveling with the family, particularly to Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, and to Kansas to visit family and friends. He loved being a dad and participated in their lives fully.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jae, in 2021, and his brother Mike, in 2023. In addition to his wife Karen and daughter Kelly, of Shoreline, WA, Pat is survived by his brother, Larry (Pat) McLain, and his sister, Merilyn Harris, of Hutchinson, and his beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews of the McLain and Wilson families.

Pat lived his life to the fullest and had wide-ranging passions, including hanging with his kids, reading (voraciously), skiing, gardening, boating at Lake Winnipesaukee, watching the Seahawks and KU basketball. He enjoyed jazz music and Tai Chi and most of all spending time with his family. He was a fun and loving husband and father. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, intellect, devotion, his warm smile, and beautiful blue eyes.

Pat was an exceptional man, and he handled his Huntington’s Disease with grace, never complaining.

A celebration of his life is planned for August 10, 2025, at St Theresa’s Catholic Church at noon.

Gene Austin Elliott, 87, of Hutchinson, KS, went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2025. He was born on September 27, 1937, in Eureka, KS, to Archie and Treva (Rayburn) Elliott.

Gene graduated from McPherson High School in 1955 and earned a degree in Business from McPherson College in 1959. On March 30, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Rossow. They shared 54 beautiful years of marriage before her passing in 2012.

In 1967, Gene and Rhonda moved to Hutchinson, where they purchased an insurance agency that would later become Elliott Insurance Management Inc. Gene owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 2006. He loved his work and took pride in servicing his clients and community. Gene served as president of the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents and was the State National Director for Kansas, representing the industry at the national level. His daughter, Jodee, joined the agency in 1987, and the two worked side by side for nearly two decades.

Gene embodied the American Dream-through hard work, perseverance and faith, he built a business and provided for his family.

Gene proudly served his country in the Reserve Unit of the National Guard and was a lifelong patriot. He was also a member of Inspire Church, where he served on the board and loved his faith community.

As a longtime Scoutmaster of Troop One, Gene guided many young men to achieve their Eagle Scout rank - including his two sons, Tim and Kip.

A lifelong athlete, Gene excelled in football, basketball, American Legion baseball, and pole vaulting during his school years at McPherson High and McPherson College. His love for sports continued throughout his life. Gene rarely missed a Hutchinson High or Hutchinson Community College game. After college, he played slow-pitch softball until he was 82 years of age proudly sponsoring the Elliott Insurance team for many years. Gene also played competitively in Kansas City and after retirement, in Arizona. He loved coaching his children and cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines.

For over 40 years, Gene could be found at the Village Inn most mornings around 8 a.m., sharing coffee, laughter and “Monday morning quarterbacking” with his longtime buddies. He cherished these times and these men.

Gene was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Rhonda; son, Tim; parents; and brother, Carl.

He is survived by: his loving companion, Margie Lundmark; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Elliott of Overland Park; son, Kip Elliott of Nashville, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Jodee and Kevin Bowen of Hutchinson. Gene leaves behind 8 grandchildren: Alicia Billings (Toby), Jordan Billings (Heather), Megan Machen (Ben), Michael Elliott, Elli Houston (Ryan), Trace Bowen (Cori), Luke Elliott (Gaby) and Will Elliott (Ella). He was also blessed with 4 great-grandchildren: Elliott, Audrey, Olive, and Hudson.

Gene and Rhonda’s enduring faith was the foundation of their family. They passed on the greatest gift of all to their children and grandchildren-an abiding love and trust in the Lord. In a letter Gene wrote Jodee a few years ago, he ended with a line that perfectly captures his spirit: “With God, life is a blast. &nbsp;Just think what a blast it will be when we all meet in Heaven!”

A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2025, at Inspire Church, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Kansas Army National Guard. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. There will be a lunch following the Celebration.&nbsp;

Timothy Marlon Fuller passed peacefully to his heavenly home at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS. He was born to parents Clarabell Fuller and Tim Bradberry in St. Petersburg, FL.&nbsp; He became a Christian at an early age and was baptized at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church July 27, 1980, in St. Petersburg at the age of 15. He graduated from Osceola High School in Osceola, FL after which he attended Hutchinson Community College and played football for the Dragons.&nbsp; Tim’s passions were family, children, grandchildren, sports and cooking.&nbsp;

Tim was the youngest child. He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers James, Robert, Jacob, and sister Charlotte Fuller.&nbsp; He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Terri Fuller, sons Jacob (Dajiah), Chris Lewis (Lindsay) and daughter Tessa Brook (Kris), brothers Jerome Fuller, Kenneth Wright, Horace Moore (Shawn), Ben Graham (Pamela), Terry Bradberry; Sisters Joann Payne (Henry), Betty Vasquez, Sandra Clark and six grandchildren.&nbsp;

Tim joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church many years ago where he became an ordained Deacon on August 14, 2022. He was a loyal member and an active part of the Male Chorus.&nbsp;

Nancy A. Scott, 76, of Hutchinson, died June 18, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born November 14, 1948, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Paul and Evelyn Auger.

Nancy graduated from Madonna High School in Wichita and received her bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University and her Master’s in Public Administration from Wichita State University. She was the city administrator for the cities of Maize and Chanute before becoming Planning and Development Director for the city of Hutchinson in 1998. She retired in 2013.

Nancy was instrumental in forming Hutchinson Animal Shelter, serving on its board. She was a master gardener and enjoyed creating mosaic art. Nancy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and member and past president of PEO HQ. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and her dogs.

On November 27, 1970, Nancy married Alan W. Scott, in Wichita. They shared nearly 55 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: her daughter, Nicole Scott of Hutchinson; son, Andrew Scott and wife Emily Hays-Scott of Wichita; grandchildren, Ethan Moore, Michael Scott, Ella Scott; brother-in-law, Keith Langholz; nephews, Chris, Jeff, and Todd Langholz; and beloved German Shepherd, Samuel “Sammy.”

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Lynne Langholz; and beloved Alaskan Husky, Sarah, and Samoyed, Mia.

Wilma L. “Brooke” (Bishop) Cole, departed this life on June 8, 2025. &nbsp;Following a difficult battle with Parkinson’s Disease, she died peacefully at home. &nbsp;Wilma was born on January 24, 1938, to Rose Mary (McGee) Bishop and William Howard Bishop, on their family farm outside of Tribune, Kansas. &nbsp;The second of seven children, she grew up knowing the hardships as well as the beauty of Western Kansas farm life during that time period: &nbsp;dust storms, drought, tornadoes, and failed crops; but also, &nbsp;beautiful sunsets on waving fields of wheat; horizons as far as you could see against piercing, blue summer skies; the peacefulness of grazing livestock; the success of a completed harvest; county fairs, neighbor helping neighbor and a one-room school house that kindled a great love of learning that she carried with her the rest of her life. &nbsp;Though she left the farm as a young woman, Wilma returned to it again and again as an adult and took her children there frequently through their childhood, so they could come to know the unique love of the place she called home. Until Parkinson’s Disease prevented travel, she returned to the family farm to gather with her siblings during the Christmas holidays every year. &nbsp;Though Wilma lived the entirety of her adult life in the city, her heart stayed tied to a small farm town in Western Kansas, all her days.

Upon graduating from Tribune High School, Wilma attended St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City and graduated with a degree in Nursing. &nbsp;From there she moved to Wichita and began her nursing career at St. Joseph Hospital. &nbsp; In 1959 she married Bill Kelley and began a family in Wichita. &nbsp;In 1966 the family moved to Hutchinson where Wilma and her husband owned and operated 3 restaurants until the late 70’s. &nbsp;After moving to Hutchinson, Wilma left her nursing career to be a stay-at-home mom, returning once the youngest was in high school. &nbsp;The second half of her nursing career Wilma spent teaching at Hutchinson Community College, working to create legislation that would improve the conditions of nursing homes in Kansas, and finally as Marketing Director for Mennonite Friendship Communities. &nbsp;

In 1992, Wilma married Larry Cole, of Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;The couple filled the following 30 plus years with travel, adventure, and a variety of real estate ventures. Their most notable achievement was their purchase of a 115-year-old Victorian era mansion, which they moved in sections to a mountainside lot in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. &nbsp;Over 3 years, they reassembled, restored, and turned what had been a broken, about-to-be-torn down, house into a showplace. &nbsp;Wilma’s creativity, ability to research historical architecture, and her eye for decorating helped create a magnificent residence. &nbsp;The home and the story of Wilma and Larry’s endeavor was featured in several regional and national travel magazines, and after their eventual conversion to an operating bed and breakfast, has appeared regularly on the Travel Chanel, highlighting places to stay in The Colorado Rockies ski resort towns.

In addition to her adventures with husband, Larry, Wilma’s greatest source of happiness was with her children and grandchildren. &nbsp;“Nana” was the thing Wilma loved to be called most. &nbsp;Her exceptional devotion to her grandchildren filled their lives with love and richness. They will deeply miss her but carry fond memories and traditions of her love.

Wilma was a life-long learner and excelled at everything she turned her hand to, whether it was nursing, teaching, cake decorating, gardening, ceramics, cooking, interior decorating--to name but a few. &nbsp;There was truly little that she was interested in that she did not find a way to learn about and enjoy. &nbsp;She loved theatre, music, art, travel, museums, sailing, and holidays. &nbsp;ALL HOLIDAYS. Wilma celebrated and decorated for every holiday, big and small, and Christmas was her favorite. &nbsp;The lives of her children and grandchildren will forever be filled with the holiday traditions she established for them, and that will live on for generations to come.

Wilma was a small person in stature, but she lived life in a very big way. &nbsp;Not big, in a showy or flashy way, but in an all-in, full-heart, arms-wide-open way. &nbsp;She loved and was loved, which is, perhaps the greatest testament to any life. &nbsp;She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Born Russell Allan Hilst on December 29, 1942, Rusty was a fixture on the Hutchinson scene for most of his 82 years, where he pursued his passions for teaching, golfing, sports broadcasting, gardening, and writing. He died peacefully at home on June 17, 2025 following a two-and-a-half year battle with bulbur-onset Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis &nbsp;(ALS a/k/a Lou Gehrig's Disease). Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Thelma (Borger) Hilst and his sister, Vivian Donnelley. He is survived by 87 family members, including his six siblings: Sandra Linley, Sheila Soleimani, Rhonda Kimball, Rick Hilst, Pam Burzinski, and Kent Hilst, as well as 22 nieces and nephews, and 36 grand nieces and nephews. &nbsp;He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Those are the broad facts of my brother's life, but they don't begin to capture his essence. If it is true that "time is not measured by the years that you live, but by the deeds that you do and the joy that you give" (Helen Steiner Rice), then Rusty's life was truly outsized, dwarfing even his 82 years.

My brother did what he loved, and he loved so much! How do you distill that into an obituary? I've agonized ov er that impossibility, until finally realizing my mistake. His friends have already done the heavy-lifting. &nbsp;We have only to listen, while they give you Rusty...

In the words of one good friend, " Rusty was truly one of one" - there are no others like him.&nbsp;

Another proclaimed him, "My Yoda. So smart, so passionate, so compassionate, such an inspiration."&nbsp;

Yet another marveled at the way he poured into his students' lives "wisdom and kindness, always believing in their potential."

"What I admired most," one remarked, "was how deeply he cared — for his family, his friends, and for doing things the right way. He brought thoughtfulness, grace, and fierce competitive spirit into every moment... Rusty leaves behind a legacy of excellence, kindness, and integrity."

That refrain echoes again and again, "How lucky for all of us that we enjoyed the wit, wisdom and wonder of this incredibly fine and decent man."

And, with a humorous nod to his passing, "Heaven is in for a treat."

Rusty deserves the superlatives. But how did he grow into them?

Born four days after Christmas in 1942, Rusty enjoyed an uneventful (well, except for ingesting a little gasoline!) early childhood in small town Meade. That changed when he contracted rheumatic fever in the second grade and was confined to bed for eight long months. There were no TVs in those days, and even radios were scarce. So Rusty spent those months teaching himself to read and devouring all the mysteries and adventures the library could offer up. From chance and adversity grew a lifelong passion for learning, reading, and self-sufficiency.

In 1957, Rusty's family moved to Hutchinson. Here Rusty discovered another grand passion — &nbsp;golf. It happened almost incidentally, again owing to the rheumatic fever that had left him with a heart murmur. Unable to participate in basketball or football, Rusty took up golf. And never looked back! Playing at Carey Park, the community course, using a very rudimentary set of clubs, Rusty quickly gained skill. Before long, he was playing on the Hutchinson High School golf team, where in 1960 he helped the Salthawks snag a 4-man state title. Rusty went on to win numerous city championships and eventually, a place in the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame (2002).&nbsp;

Rusty was always a good student, which was fortunate, because in a family that had grown to seven kids (sisters Vivian, Sandra, Sheila, Rhonda and Pam, and brother Rick — Kent, the baby of the family having yet to make an appearance), money was scarce . Having secured scholarship help, in 1960 he packed an old steamer trunk and climbed aboard a train for Valparaiso University in Indiana. His love of golf went with him. Still, he took his education seriously, not missing a single class that first semester and making all A's. That single mindedness didn't last. By the end of his junior year, Rusty campaigned — unsuccessfully — to convince his folks that he should stop out and become a golf pro.&nbsp;

This left Rusty with three options upon graduation: get a job (and get drafted), go to law school, or pursue a PhD in political science. He opted for the graduate program at The University of Kansas, becoming a Jayhawk. While there, he was a self-described "unenthusiastic" student. A sports fan, he managed to attend every home basketball game, but none of the football games (preferring to spend those Saturday afternoons on the nearly empty Lawrence Country Club course — golf still being his abiding love).&nbsp;

While Rusty was drifting along, completing his masters in political science, and heading without much conviction for a Ph.D., fate, in the form of a last-minute opening in the math department at Hutchinson High School (HHS), had other plans. Rusty never intended to become a teacher. He had zero education courses, zero teaching credentials, zero experience. But teach he would and did! Thus, chance launched a legendary teaching career that began in 1960 and spanned 54 years. Rusty's first year teaching was rough (pencils in the ceiling rough!), but undeterred he went on to handle courses ranging from college algebra to calculus and trigonometry. &nbsp;In 1978 he was made chair of the HHS Math Department.&nbsp;

Rusty's commitment to mentoring extended beyond the classroom. Marrying his love of teaching and golf, he was soon helping coach the high school golf team. When the head coach, Rusty's friend and mentor Max Hamilton, died, Rusty stepped into that role. For the next 30 years — during which time the Salthawk team qualified for State twenty-six years in a row — he held that position. Rusty was in his element coaching, helping to hone the skills of young people and imparting what he called Life Lessons, as when he encouraged a player to self-report a scoring error that prevented his team from winning a championship. "Reporting the incorrect score kept us from winning," Rusty acknowledged later, "but it also taught a huge lesson about honesty and integrity."

Never one to ration his energies when it came to his passions, Rusty made time in his busy schedule to keep stats for the high school basketball and football teams. It was a labor of love, done strictly behind the scenes. Until it wasn't. In 1969, Rusty picked up a mic. Circumstances compelled, and — once again — Rusty obliged. Thus began his storied career in sports broadcasting. Initially he called games at KWHK Radio, then joined KWBW in l980. What started by chance, like so much in Rusty's life, developed into a decades-spanning career covering games at Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College, and the NJCAA Tournament.&nbsp;

From 1995 through 2019, Rusty served as sports director at Eagle Communications. In 2004 he was named the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year, and in 2005, he won the Hod Humiston Award for excellence in broadcasting from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. In 2014 Rusty became the first non-player, coach or administrator ever inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club Hall of Fame, in recognition of his unmatched service to Blue Dragon athletics through broadcasting and advocacy.&nbsp;

As he approached his 80th birthday, Rusty cut back on the number of courses he taught, but he vowed to continue in the classroom as long as he was able, regarding teaching time as "the best time of his day." &nbsp;Again it was fate, this time in the form of COVID, that emptied the halls of Hutch High and precipitated his retirement.

In 2023, Rusty garnered one of the state’s highest honors in education when he was inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame, a tribute to his extraordinary impact in the classroom over five decades. Later that year, Hutchinson High School dedicated Rusty’s Room, a calm space for students to reset emotionally and mentally, fittingly located in the very room where he taught math for most of his 54-year teaching career.&nbsp;

Adversity had one more twist in store for Rusty. Shortly before Christmas in 2022, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's (ALS), a fatal, degenerative disease. Such a blow might have caused him to retreat into the shadows, hiding as he awaited his body's slow decline and eventual death. But that wasn't Rusty. He was forged of tougher stuff. And stubborn, very stubborn. Instead he confronted ALS head-on and very publicly, determined to continue living and to find joy even now. And while he was at it, he would share his experience, with honesty and humor, so that others coming after might find knowledge and hope supplanting fear.&nbsp;

Then, at the age of 80 and already fighting ALS, Rusty took on a new challenge. He became an author, penning his autobiography, Banana Man. He also provided weekly updates to his many supporters on the "Rally for Rusty Hilst" facebook page. There, over the next two years he shared his philosophy, his concerns, his hopes and fears. He was transparent about the reality of his ALS ("globs of mucous" included), not glossing over the losses, but never bitter or despairing &nbsp;Even as the disease stole his ability to walk, talk, swallow, even stand, Rusty continued ferreting out the joy that remained. This was Rusty in his element, caring and sharing. Teaching.&nbsp;

At least one of Rusty's friends considered this his crowning achievement. "Rusty was a multi-talented individual that touched so very many lives, and this most recent episode of sharing the ALS journey might be his best work. No question calling a national championship or state title, or coaching golf, or teaching young kids to have AHA moments when doing their math, that was all stuff that Rusty did quite well. But the courage to share his story with truth, humility, humor and wit may help many more families deal with ALS in the future. Thank you Rusty for a life well-lived and for sharing with family, friends and fans."

Where do we leave off chronicling Rusty's life interests and accomplishments? There is always more... We haven't discussed the seven city golf tournaments he won. Or the golf scoreboards he maintained. Haven't even touched upon his abiding love for Prairie Dunes Country Club, which he regarded as his second home, and where he golfed, won and administered tournaments, and served on the influential greens committee. Nor have we mentioned his actual home (the only home he ever owned and lived in), with the drab back yard he transformed into a oasis featured on garden tours. Or his beloved koi.&nbsp;

Another omission? Rusty's lighter side. His orneriness. How he once sewed up a friend's sleeves to make him late for class, and collaborated in devising an April Fools fake quiz. His humor. How he vowed never to act his age and role-played exotic characters to make math fun. Even his stubbornness. In 2014 Rusty became the first non-player, coach or administrator ever inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club Hall of Fame, in recognition of his unmatched service to Blue Dragon athletics through broadcasting and advocacy.&nbsp;As he approached his 80th birthday, Rusty cut back on the number of courses he taught, but he vowed to continue in the classroom as long as he was able, regarding teaching time as "the best time of his day." &nbsp;Again it was fate, this time in the form of COVID, that emptied the halls of Hutch High and precipitated his retirement.In 2023, Rusty garnered one of the state’s highest honors in education when he was inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame, a tribute to his extraordinary impact in the classroom over five decades. Later that year, Hutchinson High School dedicated Rusty’s Room, a calm space for students to reset emotionally and mentally, fittingly located in the very room where he taught math for most of his 54-year teaching career.&nbsp;Adversity had one more twist in store for Rusty. Shortly before Christmas in 2022, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's (ALS), a fatal, degenerative disease. Such a blow might have caused him to retreat into the shadows, hiding as he awaited his body's slow decline and eventual death. But that wasn't Rusty. He was forged of tougher stuff. And stubborn, very stubborn. Instead he confronted ALS head-on and very publicly, determined to continue living and to find joy even now. And while he was at it, he would share his experience, with honesty and humor, so that others coming after might find knowledge and hope supplanting fear.&nbsp;Then, at the age of 80 and already fighting ALS, Rusty took on a new challenge. He became an author, penning his autobiography, Banana Man. He also provided weekly updates to his many supporters on the "Rally for Rusty Hilst" facebook page. There, over the next two years he shared his philosophy, his concerns, his hopes and fears. He was transparent about the reality of his ALS ("globs of mucous" included), not glossing over the losses, but never bitter or despairing &nbsp;Even as the disease stole his ability to walk, talk, swallow, even stand, Rusty continued ferreting out the joy that remained. This was Rusty in his element, caring and sharing. Teaching.&nbsp;At least one of Rusty's friends considered this his crowning achievement. "Rusty was a multi-talented individual that touched so very many lives, and this most recent episode of sharing the ALS journey might be his best work. No question calling a national championship or state title, or coaching golf, or teaching young kids to have AHA moments when doing their math, that was all stuff that Rusty did quite well. But the courage to share his story with truth, humility, humor and wit may help many more families deal with ALS in the future. Thank you Rusty for a life well-lived and for sharing with family, friends and fans."What's Missing HereWhere do we leave off chronicling Rusty's life interests and accomplishments? There is always more... We haven't discussed the seven city golf tournaments he won. Or the golf scoreboards he maintained. Haven't even touched upon his abiding love for Prairie Dunes Country Club, which he regarded as his second home, and where he golfed, won and administered tournaments, and served on the influential greens committee. Nor have we mentioned his actual home (the only home he ever owned and lived in), with the drab back yard he transformed into a oasis featured on garden tours. Or his beloved koi.&nbsp;Another omission? Rusty's lighter side. His orneriness. How he once sewed up a friend's sleeves to make him late for class, and collaborated in devising an April Fools fake quiz. His humor. How he vowed never to act his age and role-played exotic characters to make math fun. Even his stubbornness.
