&nbsp;John Rolland Christenson, 95, of Lindsborg, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Bethany Home. Rolland was born on January 17, 1926 in McPherson County, to Elmer Lawrence and Mathilda Sophia (Carlson) Christenson. He married Aileen Gene Anderson on December 28, 1947 in Marquette.

Rolland was a parish pastor for 36 years, serving churches in Vilas and Chanute,&nbsp; and Marshalltown, Urbandale, and Davenport, Iowa. Following his retirement, he continued to serve for another 17 years as interim pastor and chaplain for multiple churches and institutions in Iowa and Kansas. His military service included 2 years of active duty with the US Navy and 18 years with the US Air Force as chaplain in the Iowa Air National Guard.

Rolland was active in the communities of the parishes he served, contributing his time and talents to various organizations and institutions, including senior housing in the Quad Cities (Luther Manor of Scott County, Inc. and Luther Acres, Inc.), and Bethany College in Lindsborg. He was the author of several devotional books and books on family history. He enjoyed working with wood, photography, and being outdoors.

Rolland was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters Eunice Marie Hoffhines and Betty Margaret Slater, and brother Amos Lawrence Christenson. He is survived by his children, Richard Roland (Margaret) Christenson, Stuart Eugene (Cynthia) Christenson, and Gayle Aileen (Eric) Unruh; sister-in-law, Erma Maxine Roberts; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, November 1 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 2 at 10:00 AM at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, 401 N. First Street, Lindsborg, with Pastor Amy Truhe officiating. Allen Dean Thiessen, 91, died October 24, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born September 5, 1930, in Reno County, to Henry B. and Katherine (Schierling) Thiessen.

Allen attended Inman High School and Hutchinson Community Junior College.&nbsp; He retired from Kansas Gas Service, after 33 years of service.&nbsp; Allen was a former trustee at First Mennonite Church, Hutchinson, and currently was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On April 8, 1951, he married Sophie Gaeddert, at Buhler Hebron Mennonite Church. She died May 19, 1994, after sharing 43 years of marriage.&nbsp; On October 18, 1997, he married LaVaughn (Young) Theede.&nbsp;

Allen is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of 24 years, LaVaughn Thiessen of Hutchinson; daughters, Kristine Seck (Richard) of Hutchinson, Keri Thiessen of Dyer, IN, and Jenifer Wolff (Brett); granddaughter, Sophie Ana Wolff, all of Oswego, IL; stepsons, Steve Theede (Kay) of Houston, TX, Roger Theede (Cathy) of Nickerson, and Mitch Theede (Jay) of Columbia, MO; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents; son, Timothy Ray Thiessen; and a brother, Edward Thiessen.

D. Wayne Chartier, 90, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 7:35 a.m., Sunday, October 24th, 2021 at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas.

Wayne was born in Concordia, Kansas on September 24, 1931, a son of Lenora Maxine (Layton) and Louie A. Chartier.

Wayne attended the Districts 19 and 11 country schools, Lincoln grade school, and graduated in 1949 from Concordia High School, all of Concordia, Kansas.

Wayne was united in marriage to Carolee Anne Russell on June 12, 1952 at the Canton Methodist Church, Canton, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Herington, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three sons, David, Greg, and Kevin. During the Korean War Carolee moved back to Hope, Kansas until Wayne's honorable discharge when the family moved to Salina, Kansas. On December 4, 1954 they moved to McPherson and have lived here since that time.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church McPherson, where Wayne was a member of the United Methodist Men, was head usher, and served his church in many capacities through the years.

Wayne honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Through the years, Wayne worked as a carpenter for Burk Construction, worked for the McPherson Sentinel as a compositor and was a production supervisor for Johns Manville, all of McPherson.

Wayne was a member of the American Legion Post 24, McPherson, Kansas, was a Cub Scout Leader for Pack 117 and Boy Scout Leader for Troop 117, McPherson Opera House Company where he served as a showtime volunteer. He coached little league baseball for many years. Wayne enjoyed, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 69 years Carolee Chartier, of McPherson, Kansas; his sons, David Chartier and wife Kathy of McPherson, Kansas; Greg Chartier and wife Barbara of Apex, North Carolina, Kevin Chartier and wife Elizabeth Mason of Sheridan, Wyoming; his sister, Arlene Grame and husband Richard of Cummings, Kansas; his eight grandchildren, Anne Zeka and husband Colby, of Wellington, Kansas, Lisa Patterson and husband Kiley, of Lawrence, Kansas, Mason Chartier, of Apex, North Carolina, Miranda Chartier, of Apex, North Carolina, Tristan Chartier, of Sheridan, Wyoming, Ethan Chartier, of Sheridan, Wyoming, Alyssa Duba, of Lander, Wyoming and Anya Gue, of Missoula, Montana; his six great-grandchildren - Ali Zeka, Brittan Zeka, Dru Zeka, Asher Patterson, Eva Patterson and Rana Duba; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his four brothers, Norman, Richard, Dale and Lynn Chartier.

Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 1st, 2021 with Reverend Emily Cannon officiating. Military honors will be presented by members of the American Legion Post 24 and Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 2715 both of McPherson and Taps played by Mark Casebeer.

Burial will take place at the McPherson Cemetery at a later date.

He was born March 9, 1935 in Newton to Andrew and Clara (Wittmeyer) Seibel. He married Betty Friesen April 7, 1958 at Parkview Church in Hillsboro. Survivors include: wife, Betty Seibel of Hillsboro; sons, Mark (Patty) Seibel of Asheville, North Carolina, Doug (Barbara) Seibel of Greenville, South Carolina; daughter, Tonja (Michael) Nansel of Rockville, Maryland; 2 grandchildren; sister, Joyce Funk of Hillsboro. Janice Cozart, 81, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2021, at Moundridge Manor in Moundridge.&nbsp; She was born September 21, 1940, at Leola, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Edna (Lechner) Morrison.

Janice graduated from High School in Aberdeen, SD.&nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Cozart on June 12, 1960.&nbsp; They shared 58 years of marriage.&nbsp; He passed away on July 15, 2018.

Janice was a member of United Methodist Church of Moundridge.&nbsp; She loved reading, knitting and sewing.

Janice is survived by her two sons, Kenneth and his wife Ruth of Honey Creek, IA, Craig and his wife Michele of Olathe; brother, Dale Morrison (Nancy), Sheridan, WY; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Richard Wilber.

Jody Marie Dombaugh Miller, 88, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away peacefully at 11:01 a.m., Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 while in the company of family members at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Jody was born in Coldwater, Kansas on April 28, 1933, the daughter of Fred Clifford and Myrtle Marie (Atteberry) Clinesmith.

Jody attended the Coldwater elementary schools and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1951. She then attended the Pratt Community College, Pratt, Kansas for one year.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in McPherson.

Jody enjoyed her dogs, camping and traveling in her motor home, cooking, music, music theater, she loved her church family and loved spending time with her friends and family.

Jody was a homemaker. Prior to her retirement she was a secretary for Flory and Karstetter Law Office and later was a secretary for Prairie View Mental Health Center, McPherson, Kansas.

Jody was united in marriage to Darrell Neil Dombaugh on May 17, 1953 at the Methodist Church, Coldwater, Kansas. Darrell died on December 19, 2002. Jody was then married to Merlin J. Miller on August 18, 2008 in McPherson, Kansas.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin Miller, of McPherson, Kansas; her daughter Dalyn Cantrell and husband Mark, of McPherson, Kansas; her step children, Cheri Hudson and husband Neal, of Wasso, California, Kevin Miller and husband Herb Acevedo, of Provincetown, Massachusetts and Diane Patton and husband Jim, of Maize, Kansas. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Casey Cantrell and Cristen Cantrell, of McPherson, Kansas and her step grandchildren, Colby Patton, of Oxford, Kansas, Riley Patton and Cara Hudson, of McPherson, Kansas.

Jody was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Clifford Clinesmith, her husband Darrell Dombaugh and her son David Dombaugh.

A memorial service will be held on November 22, 2021 at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church, McPherson, Kansas, with Reverends Emily Cannon and Chris Whitacre officiating.

Wayne Royce Schoonover, 86, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away on October 22, 2021, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. 

He was born August 23, 1935, in Lyons, Kansas, the son of Earl C. and Clara L. Ball Schoonover. Wayne was a lifetime Rice County resident. He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1953. Wayne was a retired farmer. He served in the United State Army from 1958 until 1962. Wayne was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, member of the Lyons Town and Country Club, and past treasurer of Eureka Township. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, watching all sports, and most of all spending time with his family. On July 28, 1956, Wayne was united in marriage with Mary Louise Pollard in Lyons. She preceded him in death on March 14, 2018. He is also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herb Schoonover; and sister, Marilyn Cobb. Wayne is survived by his three children, Doug Schoonover and wife Chris of Houston, TX, Lori Farmer and husband Dale of Claflin, KS; and Ron Schoonover and significant other Debbie of Bushton, KS; sister, Connie Skiles of Richmond, KY; sister-in-law, Darlus Schoonover of Arlington, TX; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 6, 2021, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons with Father Michael Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and the Sterling American Legion Post #128. Wayne Royce Schoonover, 86, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away on October 22, 2021, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. He was born August 23, 1935, in Lyons, Kansas, the son of Earl C. and Clara L. Ball Schoonover. Wayne was a lifetime Rice County resident. He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1953. Wayne was a retired farmer. He served in the United State Army from 1958 until 1962. Wayne was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, member of the Lyons Town and Country Club, and past treasurer of Eureka Township. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, watching all sports, and most of all spending time with his family. On July 28, 1956, Wayne was united in marriage with Mary Louise Pollard in Lyons. She preceded him in death on March 14, 2018. He is also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herb Schoonover; and sister, Marilyn Cobb. Wayne is survived by his three children, Doug Schoonover and wife Chris of Houston, TX, Lori Farmer and husband Dale of Claflin, KS; and Ron Schoonover and significant other Debbie of Bushton, KS; sister, Connie Skiles of Richmond, KY; sister-in-law, Darlus Schoonover of Arlington, TX; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 6, 2021, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons with Father Michael Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and the Sterling American Legion Post #128. Wayne married Clara Mast on July 2, 1954, in Arthur, Illinois.

Wayne David King |1931-2021|

On January 27, 1930, Gottfried and Martha Laubhan welcomed their fourth child, Wilma Ann, into the world.  Wilma joined her big brother Wilbur and older sisters Naomi and Norma in a small rural home in Durham, Kansas.

Wilma attended Marion and Peabody public schools through age seventeen when she married Melvin Peters in Marion, Kansas in June 1947. A year later, Wilma and Melvin surprised their family with not just one little boy, but two when they brought home their twins Don and Ron. A third son, Larry, joined the family in 1951, and five years later, they added their little girl, Joyce. Wilma and Melvin made their lives through farming and raised countless heads of cattle, sheep, and pigs over the years.  Wilma had a way with sick animals – often nursing young lambs, calves and pigs back to life during frigid Kansas winters.  In 1970, Wilma and Melvin achieved their lifelong dream of building a home on their farm outside of Newton.

Wilma began working as a CNA in 1972, a few years later, at age 46, she went back to school to earn her GED. She went on to nursing school at McPherson School of Practical Nursing, where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1978. Wilma often described this achievement as one of her most proud, but hardest moments, as while she was in her final classes, her mother passed away.  Wilma was employed at Wheat State Manor and Bethel Deaconess Hospital before working at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita on the cancer unit for more than 10 years, retiring in 1998.

She may best be remembered by her grandchildren for her barn full of cats – all of whom would come running during the early evening chores, her banana malts, eating meals in her kitchen, helping her in the garden, teaching them how to play carroms, care for animals and assisting in naming the newborn animals.  On Sundays she often put together a full meal for family and/or friends who happened to stay over the noon or dinner hours. She was known for her mashed potatoes and hamburger gravy, her ham loaf with spicy mustard, “the pink stuff,” and her angel food cake.  Her dogs became even more important companions after Melvin passed away and her sweet Pepper stayed by her side until she was admitted to the hospital.

Wilma went to live with her heavenly father on Thursday, October 21, 2021.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Gottfried and Martha Laubhan, siblings Wilbur Laubhan, Norma Winter, and Naomi Haas, husband Melvin Peters, son Larry Peters, and grandson Dustin Demo. She is survived by sons Don (Freddie) Peters, Newton, KS and Ron (Faye) Peters, Latham, KS, daughter Joyce (Dan) Demo, El Dorado, KS, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Wilma is Sunday, October 24, 2021, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and the service is on Monday, October 25, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. both at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, KS. Gene L. Goucher, 63, of Galva, Kansas, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021 at Newton Medical Center, Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born September 2, 1958 in McMinnville, Oregon, the son of Tom G. and Mary Lou (Shearon) Goucher.

He operated Gene’s Mower Service.&nbsp; Gene was a truck driver and was the owner and operator of G &amp; R Trucking of Galva.&nbsp; He was a member of Lone Tree Mennonite Church in Galva.

Gene was united in marriage to Ruby Becker on June 12, 1977 at Lone Tree Church in Galva. She survives.

He is also survived by his mother, Mary Lou Goucher of Galva; daughters, Robin Unruh (Jed) of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Julie Goucher of Galva, and Tammy Ratzlaff (Tim) of Moundridge; &nbsp;brothers, Ed Goucher (Brenda) of Texhoma, Oklahoma, and Jesse Goucher (Carolyn) of Murray, Kentucky; and eight grandchildren.

Carolyn was united in marriage to David L. Yost on December 7, 1969 at Montezuma, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives of the home.

Carolyn is survived by her four daughters, Loretta Jarvis of Salina, KS, Sherri Martin (Sylvan) of Tonasket, WA, Becky Martin (Dani) of Dardanelle, AR, and Trish Nichols of Montezuma, KS; five brothers, Elwin Schmidt (Priscilla), Laurel Schmidt (Carolyn), Kenneth Schmidt (Anita), Robert Schmidt (Ardith) and David Schmidt (Virginia); sister, Ruth Toews (Walter); brother-in-law, Rodney Koehn; brothers-in-law, Darrel Yost (Helen) and John Yost (Carol); sister-in-law, Marlene Nightingale (Dennis); 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

STAFFORD - Susan “Sue” Thole, 91, died Monday, October 18, 2021 at Leisure Homestead, Stafford.&nbsp; Born September 5, 1930 at Eureka she was the daughter of Wilbur and Sarah Cronk Soule.&nbsp; In 1949 she graduated from Emporia Kansas State Teacher’s College and taught 5th&nbsp;grade at Stafford Elementary from 1949-51.&nbsp; Sue was an active 4-H Leader teaching knitting and sewing and juding knitting and crochet at the State Fair.&nbsp; She taught tatting, sewing, crocheting and knitting nearly all of her life and for 20 years donated tatting to the Kansas Land Improvement Association Scholarship Auction. In 1966 she received the Public Relations award from the Cooperative Extension Service. Sue was in the Extension Homemaker Unit and was Happy Homemaker’s longest member.&nbsp; In 2014 she was awarded the KLICA’s Woman of the Year.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Stafford United Methodist Church and was a longtime Sunday School teacher.&nbsp; She helped with the church bazaar for many years making chicken and noodles, apple pies, apple butter, breads and cinnamon rolls. She was a 7th generation direct descendant of the pilgrim, George Soule who was an indentured servant that came over on the Mayflower in 1620 and signed the Mayflower compact.

On November 25, 1951 she married Harold Thole.&nbsp; He died February 17, 2013.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children: Murray (Mary) Thole, Gregory Thole and Paula (Robin) Figgs.&nbsp;

Siblings: Joan Talkington,&nbsp;Thedda Olson,&nbsp;Jerry Soule,&nbsp;Karen Nordmeyer,&nbsp;Sharon Urton and&nbsp;Richard Soule.

Grandchildren: Jason (Tara) Thole, Karen (John) Peters, Alicia (Jesse) Julian, Hannah (Jack) Figgs-Hoard, Miranda (Keith) Edwards

STAFFORD - Susan “Sue” Thole, 91, died Monday, October 18, 2021 at Leisure Homestead, Stafford.&nbsp; Born September 5, 1930 at Eureka she was the daughter of Wilbur and Sarah Cronk Soule.&nbsp; In 1949 she graduated from Emporia Kansas State Teacher’s College and taught 5th&nbsp;grade at Stafford Elementary from 1949-51.&nbsp; Sue was an active 4-H Leader teaching knitting and sewing and juding knitting and crochet at the State Fair.&nbsp; She taught tatting, sewing, crocheting and knitting nearly all of her life and for 20 years donated tatting to the Kansas Land Improvement Association Scholarship Auction. In 1966 she received the Public Relations award from the Cooperative Extension Service. Sue was in the Extension Homemaker Unit and was Happy Homemaker’s longest member.&nbsp; In 2014 she was awarded the KLICA’s Woman of the Year.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Stafford United Methodist Church and was a longtime Sunday School teacher.&nbsp; She helped with the church bazaar for many years making chicken and noodles, apple pies, apple butter, breads and cinnamon rolls. She was a 7th generation direct descendant of the pilgrim, George Soule who was an indentured servant that came over on the Mayflower in 1620 and signed the Mayflower compact.On November 25, 1951 she married Harold Thole.&nbsp; He died February 17, 2013.&nbsp;She is survived by her children: Murray (Mary) Thole, Gregory Thole and Paula (Robin) Figgs.&nbsp;Siblings: Joan Talkington,&nbsp;Thedda Olson,&nbsp;Jerry Soule,&nbsp;Karen Nordmeyer,&nbsp;Sharon Urton and&nbsp;Richard Soule.Grandchildren: Jason (Tara) Thole, Karen (John) Peters, Alicia (Jesse) Julian, Hannah (Jack) Figgs-Hoard, Miranda (Keith) EdwardsSix great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by daughter: Cheryl Kelley. She began her teaching career in Denver, Colorado in 1964. She taught in Ellis, Kansas for 6 years. Before establishing roots in Pratt, Kansas. During her 31 years as a Greenback, she taught English, Speech, and facilitated the Gifted Program before retiring in 2004. She had a love for learning and helping others learn. Carolyn had many passions including reading, gardening, antiquing, furniture refinishing and completing puzzles. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, including 3 grandsons. Earl ‘Shorty’ Neal Reneau, 82, of Pretty Prairie, KS, died Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie, KS. He was born on December 19, 1938, at Oakwood, OK, the son of Ivan and Mary (Higgenbottom) Reneau. On June 28, 1959 he married Betty Stewart in Carmen, OK. She survives. During high school, he joined the National Guard. He then joined the Navy and served from Oct. 1957 - Dec. 1961. He earned a masters degree and was a Teacher/Principal/Coach from 1967-1996. Most of those years were spent teaching &amp; coaching for USD 254. He loved to go camping, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge and had served as deacon. Ronald Eugene Murphy, 73, passed away on October 19th, 2021 in Wichita, Kansas.

Ron was born in St. Charles, Missouri to Frederick Francis Murphy and Viola Josephine (Jones) Murphy. Raised between Millwood and Silex, Missouri, he graduated from Silex High School in 1966. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Missouri in Rolla for a year and a half, until he returned home to care for family.

After returning to Silex he worked for his brother, Bob Murphy, at the Silex Market, until he started working in animal pharmaceutical production. Ron worked his way up to production/plant manager and worked in the industry for nearly 25 years. Ron was a hard worker, a great manager and was well respected by colleagues and employees.

Ron enjoyed cheering for and listening to St. Louis Cardinal games, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, Mizzou basketball and football and just about anything sports related. He did NOT care for sports analysts. Ron loved meeting new people, though he rarely met a stranger. Ron loved his community, church, and blue pick-up truck which he loved to use for hauling items to the church garage sale.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Viola, brothers Fred, Bob, Dave, Gary, sister Mary Jo and granddaughter Natalie.

Ron is survived by wife Cindy Murphy (Wichita), son Casey Murphy (Lauren) of Ozark Mo, and daughter Meagan Montes-Murphy (Carlos Montes-Aviles) of Wichita, grandchildren Andrew (22), Laura (18), Charlie (3), Catalina (1), step granddaughter Lucy (13) and step grandson Noel (14), brothers Ed and Tim, sisters Patty, Judy and Janet and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Service at Wathena United Methodist Church, in Wathena, Kansas on Friday, October 29th, 2021. The service begins at 11am, with lunch to follow. Family members will be staying Friday evening to catch up with friends and relatives traveling in for the memorial. For those interested, the family will be staying at Candlewood Suites in St. Joseph and gather at Ground Round Downtown in St. Joseph at 6pm.

Irma Ruth Beery Giles Howell passed away October 5, 2021 at McPherson Hospital in McPherson, Kansas just weeks before reaching age 97. She had been a resident of The Cedars in McPherson for more than 20 years and was a McPherson College Class of 1949 graduate.

She was born in Lintner, Illinois October 28, 1924 to Lester and Bertha (Cripe) Beery and graduated from Cerro Gordo (IL) High School in 1942. She married William (Bill) Giles in 1947 while they were attending McPherson College, then spent most of their working years in and around Peoria, Illinois, retiring fully in 2000 at The Cedars Independent Living in McPherson.

She was the last of her generation having been preceded in death by brother Everett and sisters Iva and Leona (Petcher). Also preceding her in death were husband Bill (2001), son Gary of Elbing KS (2010), and granddaughter Jessica Stevenson (2016) of McPherson. Surviving are Gary’s widow Sandy Giles (Brewer), Merle (Erika) Giles of Mahomet IL, Marianne Peeples of Phoenix AZ, and Marcia Stevenson of Montreal MO, along with 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth survived her second husband Weldon Howell who passed in 2012. Surviving are step-children Veneta (Paul) Ediger of McPherson, Nolan (JoAnn Reed) Howell of McPherson, Norman (Mei-Feng) Howell of Fremont CA and Janice (Terry) Wokaty of Jacksonville AR, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Ruth taught public elementary school for 26 years, including 3 years in a one-room country school near Cerro-Gordo IL. She sang in the McPherson College choir as well as in church choirs well past age 90. She taught piano lessons for 15 years following retirement and ran a bed-and-breakfast for 15 years. She was active on the leadership board at her home Church of the Brethren in Peoria and was once the IL/WIS District Moderator.

She earned a graduate degree in music theory post-retirement from Bradley University. She was known to play piano regularly at The Cedars and most recently played from memory for her family just days before passing.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the McPherson Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating.

Internment of her cremains will be at the McPherson Cemetery.

Irma Ruth Beery Giles Howell |1924-2021|

Cleo R. Bartlett was born in September 1926 in Fulton County, Arkansas.&nbsp; He was the son of Andrew and Alma Shelton Bartlett and spent his childhood on a farm between St. John and Stafford.&nbsp; He attended Stafford schools, graduating with the class of 1943 at the age of 16.&nbsp; The summer after graduation he attended Sterling College, received an emergency WWII teaching certificate, and began his forty plus years of educating young people.&nbsp; In 1944 he was drafted into the U. S. Navy.

Following military service, he continued his education at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1949.&nbsp; He completed his Masters at the University of Wyoming. Cleo returned to Kansas and taught two years at Ellsworth before coming to St. John where he was to remain, serving as a teacher, high school counselor, and his last 26 years as St. John High School principal.&nbsp; He retired in 1988 having served 42 years in Kansas education.

Cleo married Darlene Ring at the St. John Methodist Church in 1951, and this became their church home for the remainder of their lives.&nbsp; Cleo served as a Sunday School teacher, on the Administrative Board, as Lay Leader, and as a member of the choir, Methodist Men, and the Prairie Crooners.&nbsp; He was a past president of the St. John Lions Club; Past Regional President of the Kansas Personnel and Guidance Association; and Past President of the Kansas High School Principals’ Association as well as a member of the Ida Long Goodman Library board, the St. John Beautification Committee and the Cornwell Scholarship Committee.&nbsp; He was an active member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #539.&nbsp; Cleo’s avocation was his music, and he was known for his beautiful tenor voice. &nbsp;One of the joys of his retirement years was singing with the Mennonite Men’s Chorus and the Lindsborg Messiah.

Cleo is survived by his daughter, Suzanne McKaig (Patrick), Wichita and daughter-in-law Debby Bartlett, Overland Park; grandchildren Jessica Janzen (Eric), Dallas; Benjamin McKaig (Danielle), Pawtucket, RI; Preston Bartlett, Kansas City; Kyleigh Bartlett, Overland Park; Ryan Bartlett, and Cameron Bartlett, both of Jacksonville, FL; two great-grandchildren Parker Bartlett and Benjamin McKaig, Jr.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother Vernon and wife Olive, St. John; and sisters-in-law Barbra Ring Atterbery, Tribune; and Mary Lou Padilla Ring, Gilbert, Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, his son, Douglas, by his parents and his brothers, A.C. and Vonnie, and Steve Bartlett, nephew.

His life was devoted to helping young people develop their skills and abilities to their fullest potential, and joy came when he saw them succeed and become contributing adults. Cleo R. Bartlett was born in September 1926 in Fulton County, Arkansas.&nbsp; He was the son of Andrew and Alma Shelton Bartlett and spent his childhood on a farm between St. John and Stafford.&nbsp; He attended Stafford schools, graduating with the class of 1943 at the age of 16.&nbsp; The summer after graduation he attended Sterling College, received an emergency WWII teaching certificate, and began his forty plus years of educating young people.&nbsp; In 1944 he was drafted into the U. S. Navy.Following military service, he continued his education at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1949.&nbsp; He completed his Masters at the University of Wyoming. Harold James Phillips, 96, of Hutchinson, died October 20, 2021, at Buhler Sunshine Home. He was born June 15, 1925, in Hutchinson to Benjamin and Jessie (Benson) Phillips.

Harold graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1943. He was a lifelong farmer. Harold was a fan of the Kansas City Royals and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church.

On January 12, 1952, Harold married Sally Lou Duby, in Nickerson. They shared 52 years together before she passed on February 26, 2004.

Rosalind’s life began on October 28, 1944, the daughter of Charles E. and Rosetta (Newell) Carter in Richmond, Missouri. She graduated from Potwin High Class of 1963 and married Harry Lee Swift on July 17, 1963 at the Potwin Christian Church.

Rosy and Harry managed Newell’s Truck Stop in Newton where she was also a hostess and a waitress. She was a member of Potwin Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bingo, casinos crafts, baking, cooking shows on television, setting up for farmer’s markets with their friends, Lucy and Denny. They enjoyed having hunters in to play poker and their annual fishing trip to Texoma, Oklahoma. Her loving family includes her daughters, Tammy Swift (Michael Schommer) of Newton, Christa Mellinger (David) of Valley Center, four grandchildren, Stephanie Jo Swift (Jenny), Connor Schommer, Cody Mellinger and Ashton Mellinger (Alex Pinkerton); brothers, Charles Carter Jr. of Whitewater, Terry Carter (Margaret) of Newton; sisters-in-law, Connie Carter and Dora Carter both of Potwin, Dawn Carter of Augusta and Mary Carter of Camden, Missouri; her doggie boys, Bryck and Duke. Lothar’s life began on December 6, 1929, in Tampa, KS. He was the son of Gustav C. and Charlotte (Winter) Maaser. Lothar was a 1946 graduate of Tampa High School. 

He served his country in the United States Army for over 20 years in the infantry as a tank driver. Lothar loved to hunt, load black powder ammunition and collect guns. He was a life member of the NRA. He is survived by his sister Helen Benson of Lee Summit, MO; three nephews Eric Benson of St. Louis, Karl Benson of Portland, OR and Bruno Maaser of France. Lothar passed away on Wednesday October 20, 2021, at Hillsboro Community Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Otto, Bruno and Kurt. 

His family will gather with friends on Saturday October 23rd from 10-11 a.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tampa where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. led by Pastor Clark Davis. He will be laid to rest with military honors in the Lutheran Cemetery, Tampa.

Lothar A. Maaser |1929-2021|

Ronald Keith Anderson was born on January 8, 1936, in McPherson, the son of Leonard R. Anderson and Fern A. (Spencer) Anderson. Fern passed when Ron was ten years old. Leonard remarried Lena Marie Miller. Marie loved him like her own. He farmed in the summer for his uncle, Melvin Spencer, after his mother passed away. Farming made him strong with a strong grip that was part of his success later as a discus thrower. He loved farming. Ron served with the Army National Guard, Company A, 137th Infantry from 1954 through 1962 when he was honorably discharged. He was a teacher, coach, and counselor in the Lawrence, Kansas area from 1957 through 1975. He moved back to McPherson when his father-in-law asked him to come help set up an oil company for him. He taught two years at Central Christian School in Hutchinson in the midst of helping start up many businesses, including Cap Oil, The Christian Counseling Center, and Economy Hearing Aid Center. Ron graduated with the McPherson High Class of 1954. Until he was a freshman in high school, he had never thrown a discus. During those four years, he broke the school record nine times. He placed first in the league meets, first in regional meets, and first at KU Relay. He didn’t look like a discus thrower—he was 6 ft. 1 inch tall and entered high school at 140 pounds and weighed 157 pounds when he graduated. During high school, he also lettered in basketball and football. On September 20, 1956, Ron was united in marriage to Patricia Helen Casebeer in Enid, OK. He graduated with the McPherson College Class of 1958. Ron lettered in track and basketball. He was a three-time All American, four-time Discus NAIA Qualifier, KCAC Record holder, and two-year Conference champion. In 1957, he won the NAIA Discus National Championship. He was also an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the Discus. In 2000, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He threw in Masters and Senior Olympic meets from 1992 to 2016. His last competition was when he was 80 years old. He competed in 205 meets, earned 175 gold metals, and held 80 meet records during that time. Their son, Rick, followed in his dad’s footsteps and took up throwing the discus and shot put also. He enjoyed many trips with Rick and his wife, Alice, when Rick became eligible to compete in the Masters and Senior Olympic meets. It gave Ron great joy when his son started beating his records! He loved God, his wife Pat of 65 years, his family, and teaching others about our Lord and Savior. He had a special love for teaching Prophecy. He loved to take his children and grandchildren fishing when he was younger. He enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports. He had a silly sense of humor. He was called Papa and was greatly loved by all. In Ron’s last days, he was ministered to by Serenity Hospice Care. They loved him, and he loved them. They made his last days as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. He also had family members, you know who you are, who helped when Hospice couldn’t be there. Ron went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, surrounded by family at his home in McPherson. He was eighty-five. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his son, Rick and wife, Alice, of Lawrence, KS; his daughters, Terry Kanitz of McPherson, and Kim Schafer and husband, Tim, of McPherson; four grandchildren, Dustan Kanitz and wife, Brooke, of McPherson, Jessica Koehn and husband, Shawn, of Moundridge, George Schafer of McPherson, and Jamie Schafer of McPherson; 11 great-grandchildren, Riley Koehn, Madison Koehn, Lincoln Koehn, Kemper Koehn, Steele Koehn, Crew Koehn, Henley Koehn, Kreighton Kanitz, Kaizer Kanitz, Kash Kanitz, and Kager Kanitz; his sisters, Phyllis Keeslar and husband, Elden, of Florida, Jackie Eberle of Illinois, Kathy Unruh and husband, Doug, of McPherson, Vicki Vollmer and husband, Doug, of Kanopolis; and many nieces and nephews. He placed first in the league meets, first in regional meets, and first at KU Relay. He didn’t look like a discus thrower—he was 6 ft. 1 inch tall and entered high school at 140 pounds and weighed 157 pounds when he graduated. During high school, he also lettered in basketball and football. On September 20, 1956, Ron was united in marriage to Patricia Helen Casebeer in Enid, OK. He graduated with the McPherson College Class of 1958. Ron lettered in track and basketball. He was a three-time All American, four-time Discus NAIA Qualifier, KCAC Record holder, and two-year Conference champion. In 1957, he won the NAIA Discus National Championship. He was also an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the Discus. In 2000, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He threw in Masters and Senior Olympic meets from 1992 to 2016. His last competition was when he was 80 years old. He competed in 205 meets, earned 175 gold metals, and held 80 meet records during that time. Their son, Rick, followed in his dad’s footsteps and took up throwing the discus and shot put also. He enjoyed many trips with Rick and his wife, Alice, when Rick became eligible to compete in the Masters and Senior Olympic meets. It gave Ron great joy when his son started beating his records! He loved God, his wife Pat of 65 years, his family, and teaching others about our Lord and Savior. He had a special love for teaching Prophecy. He loved to take his children and grandchildren fishing when he was younger. He enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports. He had a silly sense of humor. He was called Papa and was greatly loved by all. In Ron’s last days, he was ministered to by Serenity Hospice Care. They loved him, and he loved them. They made his last days as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. He also had family members, you know who you are, who helped when Hospice couldn’t be there. Ron went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, surrounded by family at his home in McPherson. He was eighty-five. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his son, Rick and wife, Alice, of Lawrence, KS; his daughters, Terry Kanitz of McPherson, and Kim Schafer and husband, Tim, of McPherson; four grandchildren, Dustan Kanitz and wife, Brooke, of McPherson, Jessica Koehn and husband, Shawn, of Moundridge, George Schafer of McPherson, and Jamie Schafer of McPherson; 11 great-grandchildren, Riley Koehn, Madison Koehn, Lincoln Koehn, Kemper Koehn, Steele Koehn, Crew Koehn, Henley Koehn, Kreighton Kanitz, Kaizer Kanitz, Kash Kanitz, and Kager Kanitz; his sisters, Phyllis Keeslar and husband, Elden, of Florida, Jackie Eberle of Illinois, Kathy Unruh and husband, Doug, of McPherson, Vicki Vollmer and husband, Doug, of Kanopolis; and many nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Hoover officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.
