Robert
Harvey Odland, 92, passed away August 29, 2022, at Paramount Living and
Rehabilitation Center, Newton.&nbsp; He was
born July 17, 1930, in Hurley, South Dakota, the son of Harvey J. and Barbara
A. Eckstein Odland.&nbsp; He was a graduate of
Hurley High School and received his Bachelor of Chemistry from Augustana
University, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;
He married Jean Carlson in South Dakota.&nbsp;
She passed away December 29, 2015.

Robert lived
in South Dakota, then moved to Scott’s City with Jean, before moving to
Hutchinson in 1984 for most of his life.&nbsp;
He was a chemist in agriculture.&nbsp;
He enjoyed making Victorian house models and model trains for the Union
Pacific.&nbsp; He became an honorary member of
the Union Pacific Historical Society.&nbsp;
Many of his home and train models can be found throughout the country.&nbsp; Robert enjoyed playing the piano and
singing.&nbsp; He was a member of the
Crossroads Christian Church, Hutchinson, where he coordinated the communion for
the shut ins.&nbsp; 

Survivors
include his daughters, Kathy (Mark) Wells, Brookfield, WI and Lori (Tim)
Burton, Park City; grandchildren, Krista (Sean) Koch, Jenna (Joe) Willis, Annie
Wells, Timothy (Jamie) Burton, and Elizabeth (Matt) Highley; and great
grandchildren, Evianna, Adalynn, Hudson, Charlotte, Noah, Bentley, Abbott,
Conner, and Abbie. 

He was
preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother, Gene Odland.

Per his wishes, cremation has taken place.A celebration of life will take place at
10:00 AM October 14, 2022, at Crossroads Christian Church, Hutchinson.

Argie Inez Koons Staples, 69,
died September 18, 2019 at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. Argie’s
body was cremated in a ceremony shortly after her death in 2019 at Bigelow
Chapel in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge MA. A memorial is being prepared for
her and her husband Mark in that cemetery as well.

Argie was born March 15,
1950, in Reading, PA. In 1968, she graduated from Fairfield High School. In
1976 she received a BA degree at the University of Kansas and later completed
all but the thesis for an MA degree in History at KU. On March 5, 1977 she
married Mark Staples in Lawrence. They resided in the Boston-Cambridge, MA
area from 1979 until her death in 2019.

Survivors include: her
husband Dr. Mark Staples, of the home (presiding at the ceremony); son Eric
Shanline (Lebanon, PA-son of first husband, Steve Shanline, Florida);
granddaughter Chelsea Shanline (Washington, DC area-daughter of Eric Shanline);
sister, Christine Roberts and husband Steve, Plevna, KS; sister-in-law, Joyce Newton
and husband Brian, Tucson, AZ; brother-in-law, Bryan Smith, Oro Valley AZ; 3
nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister,

Karen Joan Anderson, 74, of McPherson, formerly of Scottsdale, AZ and Lindsborg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp; On April 30, 2021, she retired from Walters Optometry where she was the office manager.

Karen was born on February 14, 1948, in McPherson, the daughter of Leon and Ruth Josephine (Clark) Jantz.&nbsp; She graduated from Galva High School and was May Day Queen.

On December 17, 1971, Karen was united in marriage to Loren “Andy” L. Anderson in Miami, OK.&nbsp; They were married for 50 years before his passing on December 21, 2021.

Survivors include: three sons, Kevin Anderson (Lori) of McPherson, Keith Anderson of St. George, UT, and Tony Adams (Angie) of Hays; a brother, Gary Jantz (Debbie) of Newton; six grandchildren, Colton Anderson (Parker), Tyson Anderson (Nicole), Aaron Anderson (Rachel), Travis Anderson (Rhoni), Colton Adams, and Dakota Adams; five great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Merlyn Jantz, and sister, Myreta Koehn.

Linda Sue Tissue, 74, passed away August 27, 2022, in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Raymond and Goldie (Rose) Weeks, November 25, 1947. 

Linda enjoyed quilting, fishing, camping, baking and canning vegetables from her own garden. She liked to fill out crossword puzzle books and she was part of the Red Hat Society as well. 

Linda is survived by her children, Christine and Bradley; grandchildren, Brecken, Haley, Mallory, Samantha, Nicole, Kerynne, Brittany and Trent. She will be forever missed and treasure in our hearts always.

Art is survived by his son Tad and his wife Tricia Schlesener of El Dorado. Art passed away on August 29, 2022, at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Larry Schlesener.

Art Henry Schlesener  |1940-2022|  

Elinor’s life began on November 15, 1931, in Herington, where she was born on the family farm. She was the daughter of Peter and Clara (Schaaf) Diepenbrock, and the youngest of four siblings. Elinor and her siblings were second generation Americans. 

Growing up, Elinor was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Herington, and a member of St. Paul’s Luther League chapter and performed in the church choir. &nbsp;Elinor was a 1949 graduate of Herington High School where she was the class Salutatorian. She went on to graduate with a clerical degree from Wichita Business College. After college, Elinor worked at First National Bank in Herington. During this period of her life, Elinor travelled extensively. She even took an extended trip to Alaska. 

Elinor married Lee Wayne Remy on February 09, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington. Together they owned and operated the Herington Livestock Auction and Sale Barn where Elinor was the bookkeeper. Additionally, Elinor served as bookkeeper for Town and Country Real Estate and cashier for Remy Auction.

In her free time, Elinor also was an avid gardener, tending her vegetables daily. Elinor was a long-time community leader of the Burdick Hustlers 4-H Club. Since her marriage to Lee, Elinor was an active member of Hebron Lutheran Church of rural Burdick.&nbsp; She also enjoyed watching college basketball and had a strong love for music. Most of all, Elinor loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

Elinor Remy, at the age of 90, passed away in Herington. Jonas Dale LeShore, 23, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2022.&nbsp; He was born August 11, 1999, at Hutchinson Hospital, to Ronnie D. LeShore and Staci L. (Williams) LeShore.

Jonas was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lyons.&nbsp; He graduated from Buhler High School in 2019.&nbsp; Jonas participated in Special Olympics since the age of nine and was on the Hutchinson Hawks team.&nbsp; He enjoyed bowling, volleyball, playing basketball, running track, and throwing the shot put.&nbsp; Jonas liked to play Farkle, Mexican Train Dominoes, playing on his PS4, going to movies, and eating nachos.&nbsp; He loved to attend sporting events and to watch his brother play basketball.

Jonas is survived by:&nbsp; his parents, Ronnie and Staci LeShore of Hutchinson; brother, Isaac LeShore; grandmother, Linda Williams; aunts, De (Mark) Hunt, Pat Hudson, and Carolyn Lucky; and numerous cousins.

Jonas Dale LeShore  |1999-2022|  

After a long life well lived, the incomparable Clinton John (CJ) Lett, Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 28, 2022, with his children and wife Audrey by his side - just one week shy of his 93rd&nbsp;birthday.&nbsp;

CJ was born in Rawlins, WY, on September 4, 1929, to Clinton John Lett Sr., and Minnie (Klein) Lett.&nbsp; He grew up and spent the majority of his life in Hutchinson.&nbsp; As a young boy, CJ along with his brothers Royce and Don, began working in their father’s business, Lett Service Inc, where they repaired appliances, radios and eventually installed commercial refrigeration units in every major grocery store in the area. By the age of 13, CJ was making repair calls on his own, which sparked his lifelong hobby of fixing or “improving” any electronic, appliance or machine he could get his hands on.&nbsp;

After high school, CJ attended Hutchinson Junior College and, in the summer of 1949, he purchased a 1939 Indian motorcycle, which would be the first of many motorcycles he would own over his lifetime. CJ went on to attend Kansas State University to study engineering before enlisting in the United States Air Force (USAF). He was deployed to Saudi Arabia for 14 months and while there he and some fellow airmen started up a band they named “The Sand Tunes”. CJ was the drummer and with the money he saved from local gigs and his USAF pay, he bought his second motorcycle, a 1951 Triumph, from a market vendor in Bahrain.

For his next tour, the USAF sent him to an AFB in Great Falls, MT.&nbsp; One day in Great Falls while reading the local paper, he came across a story about a free skate for all service members at the local ice skating arena. CJ was a decent skater and had brought his ice skates with him from Kansas, so he decided to check it out. After skating for a while, he stepped off the ice to rest when a young blond woman skated up to him and asked if he wanted to join the figure skating club.&nbsp; She introduced herself and let him know that she was the ice skating instructor at the Great Falls Ice Arena. His fate was sealed that night on the skating rink.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1953, CJ married the young blond ice skater, Audrey Rose Hodges, in Great Falls, MT, and he was also cast as a skater in a number of her ice shows. In 1954, they moved to Hutchinson, where over the years, they raised five children; Kimmie, Kris, Clinton John (CJ) III, Tommy, and Sam. CJ and his brothers worked for Lett Service Inc. for many years before taking over the business from their father, which was renamed Lett Electronics Inc., located at 410 N. Plum St. in Hutchinson. Although he retired from the business many years ago, CJ never stopped fixing things.

Throughout his life, CJ’s passion for riding motorcycles took him all over North America, Mexico, and international rides as well. In his early 80’s, while riding along the western coast of South Africa for a month, he bungee jumped off the tallest bridge in the country. CJ finally retired from riding at 84 after he broke his pelvis on a trip to Talladega with his motorcycle buddies. But he still had even more amazing stories, scars, and hospital bills to show from all of his many adventures.

Audrey and CJ loved to travel. They traveled internationally with friends and family several times a year and in their later years, they traveled around the US in an RV spending at least a month every year in Destin, FL.&nbsp;Audrey and CJ loved to go out dancing and if there was a band nearby you could usually find them on the dance floor.

The only thing CJ loved more than his family and friends, fixing things, traveling, and riding motorcycles was God. He was a lifelong devout Catholic who rarely missed daily mass or the opportunity to pray for those he loved and cared about. When he was 17, his priest, Father Downs, asked CJ to spend his senior year attending a Benedictine High School in Missouri to further his studies and his faith. This was a huge honor for CJ and one that helped him realize he was not being called to the priesthood. CJ went on to dedicate his faith to Catholicism and supported Catholic charities and missions in his community and around the world for the rest of his life.

Although we know CJ is now at peace, we will still wholeheartedly miss the funny things he would say during grace before family meals, his non politically correct jokes, what a great dancer he was, the joy he wore on his face during and after family gatherings, his constant teasing, the pride and love he showed for all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, the way he could hand out Catholic guilt like candy at Halloween, and the way he showed us how to live life fully and to not be afraid of death.

He was preceded in death by: his beloved son, Tommy Lett; mother and father, Minnie and Clinton John Lett Sr; brother, Royce Lett; and son-in-law, William Finke, II.

After a long life well lived, the incomparable Clinton John (CJ) Lett, Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 28, 2022, with his children and wife Audrey by his side - just one week shy of his 93rd&nbsp;birthday.&nbsp;CJ was born in Rawlins, WY, on September 4, 1929, to Clinton John Lett Sr., and Minnie (Klein) Lett.&nbsp; He grew up and spent the majority of his life in Hutchinson.&nbsp; As a young boy, CJ along with his brothers Royce and Don, began working in their father’s business, Lett Service Inc, where they repaired appliances, radios and eventually installed commercial refrigeration units in every major grocery store in the area. By the age of 13, CJ was making repair calls on his own, which sparked his lifelong hobby of fixing or “improving” any electronic, appliance or machine he could get his hands on.&nbsp;After high school, CJ attended Hutchinson Junior College and, in the summer of 1949, he purchased a 1939 Indian motorcycle, which would be the first of many motorcycles he would own over his lifetime. CJ went on to attend Kansas State University to study engineering before enlisting in the United States Air Force (USAF). He was deployed to Saudi Arabia for 14 months and while there he and some fellow airmen started up a band they named “The Sand Tunes”. CJ was the drummer and with the money he saved from local gigs and his USAF pay, he bought his second motorcycle, a 1951 Triumph, from a market vendor in Bahrain.For his next tour, the USAF sent him to an AFB in Great Falls, MT.&nbsp; One day in Great Falls while reading the local paper, he came across a story about a free skate for all service members at the local ice skating arena. CJ was a decent skater and had brought his ice skates with him from Kansas, so he decided to check it out. After skating for a while, he stepped off the ice to rest when a young blond woman skated up to him and asked if he wanted to join the figure skating club.&nbsp; She introduced herself and let him know that she was the ice skating instructor at the Great Falls Ice Arena. His fate was sealed that night on the skating rink.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1953, CJ married the young blond ice skater, Audrey Rose Hodges, in Great Falls, MT, and he was also cast as a skater in a number of her ice shows. In 1954, they moved to Hutchinson, where over the years, they raised five children; Kimmie, Kris, Clinton John (CJ) III, Tommy, and Sam. CJ and his brothers worked for Lett Service Inc. for many years before taking over the business from their father, which was renamed Lett Electronics Inc., located at 410 N. Plum St. in Hutchinson. Charles Tom “Cactus” Hirst, 88, of Russell, died August 28, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson. He was born July 28, 1934, in Hutchinson, to Bert and Juanita (Buckhannan) Hirst.

Tom graduated from Partridge High School in 1952. He worked in the telephone industry most of his life: 31 years as a technician for Western Electric, which later became Southwestern Bell, and 15 years as a sub-contractor. Tom loved to head to the woods for shooting rifles, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed using his ham and CB radios and watching NASCAR races. In 1972 Tom began attending AA and did so faithfully for nearly 50 years, allowing him to form many great friendships.

On October 22, 1969, he married Joan Ruth Davis. They shared 42 years before her passing on February 15, 2015.

Tom is survived by: sons, Theodore “Ted” Hirst, Hays, William “Bill” Hirst, Hutchinson; Ronald “Ron” Hirst (Tracy), Ark City; step-daughter, Marsha Harrington, Seattle, Washington; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Bert and Nita Hirst; wife, Joan Hirst; and brothers, Bill, Eugene, and James Hirst.

Memorial service will be 10:30 am Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary. A private burial will take place in Partridge Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Sheryl Lynne (Allison) Smith, 71, of Buhler, Kansas, passed on August 28, 2022. Sheryl was born on June 26, 1951 in Lyons.&nbsp; She was first chair clarinet in the Pride of Lyons Marching Band and valedictorian of the graduating class of 1969.&nbsp; She followed her passions to Fort Hays State University where she marched with the Tiger Marching Band and majored in art education.&nbsp; Here she met a handsome economics major, Rick Smith.&nbsp; They met in art class when Rick claimed he needed help drawing some birds. 

Rick and Sheryl were married August 10, 1973.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children: daughter Tara Goans and husband Lonnie of Buhler; daughter Mindy Fry and husband Andrew of Shawnee; and son Brett Smith and wife Julie of Buhler.

Sheryl began her teaching career at Eureka Jr. Sr. High School where she taught art for 7 years.&nbsp; The family moved in 1992 to Buhler, Kansas where Sheryl began teaching art for the elementary students at USD #313 and later moved to Buhler High School where she finished her teaching career in 2015.&nbsp; She was called to teach again for 2 more years at Prairie Hills and loved teaching middle school, even in retirement.&nbsp; Sheryl was also an adjunct professor at Sterling College, helping out with their art education program.

In addition to the many lives she touched through her teaching career, Sheryl continued to bless others with her music.&nbsp; She played the organ/piano for the Christian and Congregational Church (Eureka), First United Methodist Church (Hutchinson), and Emanuel Lutheran Church (Hutchinson). She also accompanied many students with state vocal competitions as well as assisting her children and grandchildren with music lessons.

Sheryl was loved tremendously by her family, her students and friends.&nbsp; She was always the first to help those in need. From donating supplies to classrooms, offering home cooked meals, or just being a listening ear, Sheryl was always quick to uplift her friends and family both in person and on Facebook, where she loved catching up with just about everyone.&nbsp; She enjoyed creating art and planned and hosted summer art camps for children with the Buhler Recreation Department.&nbsp; She loved her soap opera, The Young and the Restless, reading, and just having her entire family together.&nbsp; She also loved her medical shows while sharing her expertise with her family who called often needing medical advice!&nbsp; Most importantly, she loved the Lord and was faithful all her years on this earth.&nbsp; She was always proud that as a child she won a special perfect attendance pin each year in Sunday school.&nbsp;

Sheryl is survived by her husband Rick Smith of Buhler, daughter Tara Lynne Goans (Lonnie), daughter Mindy Lea Fry (Andrew), son Brett Ryan Smith (Julie), grandchildren Colton, Allison and Ty Goans, Mason Fry and Bellatrix Smith, brother Craig Allison (Nancy) of Salina, and sister Chelle Cox (Rick) of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Bonnie (Crowl) Allison, and granddaughter Tayllor Paige Goans.&nbsp;

Warren Leo Crist went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 27, 2022. Leo was born on March 24, 1927, on a farm in Osborn County. He was the second of four children born to Louis and Bernice Crist.

His freshman year of high school he had polio, so that kept him in bed for a whole year. However, that didn’t stop him. He graduated from Osborn High School in 1945.

After graduation, he started working for the Santa Fe Railroad. While working for the Santa Fe, he met a young lady named Margie Carpenter, who also worked for the Santa Fe. They began dating and were married on April 18, 1959. Both worked many years for the Santa Fe Railroad, with Leo retiring in 1989.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Lee Crist; his parents; and a sister, Marge Self.

He is survived by his daughter, Tina Schmidt and husband Larry; a grandson Brandon and wife Samantha; precious great-grandson, Victor; and sisters, Dorothy Markham and Twila Frank.

Some of Leo’s favorite things in life were hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved the great outdoors, and you could always find him working on a project.

In their retirement Marge and Leo traveled to every state at least twice.

He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 43 years. And volunteered at Crosswind Conference Center for many years.

There will be a graveside and home going service for him at Greenwood Cemetery at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 1, 2022, with Chip Bungard officiating.

Lorrayne G. Unruh Pankratz, 89, died on August 24, 2022, at Kidron Bethel in North Newton.

She was born on July 25, 1933 in Great Bend, the daughter of Harry and Lena (Schultz) Unruh.

Lorrayne attended Bethel College and Emporia State University for a degree in education. She taught at Albert, Scott City, Larned and Newton.

Lorrayne enjoyed reading, traveling, and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Along with Norman she enjoyed bird watching at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.

Lorrayne is survived by her husband, Norman L. Pankratz; daughter, Andrea Unruh and husband Merrill; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Kim Leroy Staub age 65, of Olsburg, passed away on Aug. 28th 2022, after a battle with Parkinson's surrounded by his family at Lincoln Rehabilitation Center in Wichita. 

Kim Was born Dec. 18th 1956, Wichita.   He was the son of Victor and Phyllis (Reynolds) Staub. 

 On August 8th 1981, he married Brenda Osborn in St. John.  They had three children Rachael Weber (Paul) Wichita, Brent Staub (Alex) Wichita, Brett Staub Olsburg.  Two grandchildren Jett and Jaci Weber.  Sisters Tonya Sanders (Wade) Saint John, Lisa Irvin (Mike) Olsburg, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Kim enjoyed his life surrounded by his friends and family.  His love and compassion to help others really shined in the last few years of his life while assisting the Flint Hills Foster Teen Camps.   Everyone that knew Kim has a great story to tell about him. 

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 2nd, 1:00 pm - 7 pm with family present from 5 pm to 7 pm at Minnis Chapel.  Graveside Inurnment Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022 at Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John, KS, with Carl Feril presiding.

Betty I. Galloway, 98, died August 28, 2022, at Pleasant Hills, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born June 28, 1924, at home in Arma, to Arnold Truman and Emma Irene (McGraw) Gude.

Betty graduated from El Dorado High School and attended El Dorado Junior College while working at McClellens and Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

On July 20, 1946, she married LeRoy Galloway, at the First Baptist Church, El Dorado.&nbsp; They moved to Hutchinson in 1953, and became members of Trinity United Methodist Church.&nbsp;

Betty served as a Girl Scout Leader and Girl Scout Day Camp Director.&nbsp; She was employed by J.S. Dillon and Sons at the 14th&nbsp;and Main store from 1961-1971.

Betty was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband, LeRoy, twin children, son, Richard “Ricky” Galloway, and daughter, Brenda Galloway; and a sister, Joyce Frazey.

She is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Lynn Booth, Brona La Force, Diana Fromong, and Denise Galloway, all of Hutchinson; sister, June Hightower of Mascouth, IL; grandchildren, Tama La Force, Tara La Force, Shannon Edwards, Grady Edwards, Josh Galloway, and six great-grandchildren.

Russell was born July 15, 1955, in Newton to Otto and Edna Eck and joined his older brother Rodney.&nbsp; Brother Morris was born in 1957 and Mitchell was born in 1962 to complete the family of four boys. 

Russell attended Remington schools and graduated from Remington High School in 1974 where he enjoyed math.&nbsp; Being a born farmer, he worked with his father and later with two of his brothers on the same family farm all his life.&nbsp; As a family, camping vacations to Colorado were enjoyed when field work permitted.&nbsp; When Rodney relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, the three brothers were known to take the bus to visit Rodney. On one occasion, the bus broke down and Russell was able to repair it displaying his mechanical skills. They had a baling business for some years and always appreciated a delicious home cooked meal when provided by the neighbor wives.&nbsp; Russell also worked for neighboring farmers assisting with combining and trucking wheat. He was sociable and appreciated by friends and neighbors. Russel enjoyed southern gospel and contemporary music enjoying concerts. After his parents died at young ages, he also experienced further loss when Rodney died in 2007. Morris died suddenly in 2009 at the age of 43 during harvest. Mitchell developed cancer and died in 2020 at the age of 58. So, he wondered when his turn would come.

His neighbors were friends who called on him and cared about him. He knew who he could call for help. A neighbor family held a very special birthday party for his 60th&nbsp;birthday and he was surprised and overwhelmed. Russel knew he wasn’t ready for heaven and the spiritual seed was planted for three or more years with frequent discussion about the gospel. One Easter he was ready to get more serious and began to read the Bible given to him, and began looking up scriptures about salvation, and continued asking questions. He began to understand further after viewing the movie “God Is Not Dead.” At that time, he more fully understood his personal need of the Savior and accepted Christ’s death on the cross as payment for his personal sins. Following this, he was invited to study the Bible beginning in Genesis. His joy and assurance were evident, and he sought Bible instruction through Emmaus Church. He was baptized by Dr. Tim Mace.

He enjoyed spending time with the young children of his neighbor and while watching a children’s DVD, he realized anew the simplicity of his salvation. On the first Christmas after his conversion, he hung a lighted wreath in the window. He was reported to have said, “Now I want people to know that I am celebrating Christmas for the right reasons.” One of his favorited times to serve in the church was at the annual men’s breakfast during the missions conference.

Russel was promoted to the presence of his Savior whom he loved on July 23, 2022. Russell’s family includes his nephew David and wife Rachel Eck, great nephew Uriah Eck, nephew Kevin Eck, sister-in-law Mary (Eck) Petrie. He also has younger nieces Lily and Lila. He also has many cousins and friends.

Survivors include: wife, Nancy Caudell of Hillsboro; sons, Mark (Gail) Caudell of Claremore, Oklahoma; Craig Caudell of Newton, Todd Caudell of Severy; daughter, Tina Ast of Belle Plain,; sister, Shirley Driskill of Neodesha; numerous grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Frances Schmidt, 87, passed away August 24, 2022.&nbsp; She is now reveling in the glory of heaven and in the presence of Jesus and the angels, and reuniting with her loved ones who have gone before her.&nbsp; Those loved ones include her husband Marvin; her mom and dad Louise and Frank Schlup; brothers Ken and Keith (Red) Schlup; and sister Kathleen Powell.&nbsp; She is survived by her daughter Peggy (Dan) Blevins of Valley Center and Larry (Tina) Schmidt of North Newton; sister Dorothy Williams; grandchildren Caroline (David) Fox of St Louis, Matt (Shea) Blevins of Wichita and Brandon (Samantha) Schmidt of Belton, MO; and six great grandsons.

Frances was an operator for Southwestern Bell for many years, then elected to be a full time mom when her children were born.&nbsp; After devoting her energies to raising her children, she returned to work for AT&amp;T as a directory assistance operator, commuting to Wichita, until she retired in 1991.

She loved cats, and Hazel was her constant companion throughout her last years.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 29th&nbsp;at 10:00 am.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vernon D. Pauls, 92, died Aug. 20 at Kidron Bethel Health Care. He was born Aug. 3 1930 to George A. and Sarah (Fehdrau) Pauls, rural Inman. Vernon attended elementary schools in McPherson County and graduated from Inman High School in 1948. He was baptized June 9, 1946 by Rev. P.T. Neufeld at the Bethel Mennonite Church, Inman.

Vernon attended Bethel College for one year, after which he was qualified to teach elementary school. He then accepted a position in a one-room school in Marion County. He alternated studying at Bethel and teaching until graduating in 1956. During these years he served two years in Mennonite voluntary service which included teaching one and half years in Cuauhtemoc Mexico and six months working at Brooklane Hospital in Maryland. 

In 1958 he accepted a position at Bethel College as admissions counselor, after which he attended the University of Kansas where he received a Master’s degree in guidance and counseling. He was a member of the Kansas Teachers’ Association, National Education Association, and a lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa. After retirement Vernon participated in the McPherson County and Harvey County Retired Teachers’ Associations.

Vernon married Janice Reusser in 1961 at Moundridge. They spent two years living in Lawrence. Following graduation from KU, they moved to Hillsboro for two years and then to McPherson where they lived for fourteen years before moving to Vernon’s home place west of McPherson. During his time in the McPherson area, Vernon worked as a guidance counselor first at McPherson Junior High School and completed his time at McPherson High School, retiring in 1993. In 2006, they moved to North Newton and to Kidron Bethel Retirement Village in 2018.

Vernon considered the farm a good place to raise their two Sons but also viewed it as a future retirement project. He planted a small orchard with numerous varieties of apple trees as well as many cherry trees. He also enjoyed his shop where he constructed small woodworking projects and learned how to make wooden pens on his lathe. He loved to go fishing and spent many hours working in their vegetable garden.

Survivors include his wife, Janice, sons, Steve (Linda) Pauls of Fresno, CA. and Brian (Nikki) Pauls of Overland Park.; five grandchildren, Rowan, Nolan and Daniel Pauls of Fresno and Eleanor (Yiyi) and Simone (Cece) Pauls of Overland Park. Other survivors include two brothers, Melvin (Nancy) Pauls of Newton and Ron (Evelyn) Pauls of Henderson, NE., a sister, Lavella (Howard) Delaplane of Ames, OK. and nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant daughter, and a brother-in-law.

A memorial service will be held at Faith Mennonite Church, Newton, on Sept. 24, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.

Vernon D. Pauls  |1930-2022|  

It is with heavy heart that the family of FL Young announce his passing at 89, of Cheney.&nbsp; He was born in a farmhouse, near Cheney, graduated from Kingman High School, attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship, served a couple of years in the United States Army, then went back to college, joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and completed his Dairy Husbandry degree at Kansas State University.&nbsp; 

FL and Nyla (formally Nyla Arents, of Leonardville, KS) married in 1959. &nbsp;FL was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the Kansas Masonic Lodge, becoming a 33 degree Mason. In his 89 years, he dedicated his life to his family, and cherished his farm and ranch life on the property homesteaded in 1860.

FL was outgoing and enjoyed visiting with people.&nbsp; As a partly retired farmer, he enjoyed attending grandchildren’s activities, gardening, and kept 18 head of cattle.

FL was predeceased by his father and mother, daughter Brenda (at age 11); many siblings, being the youngest of 9 children, Leroy Young, May Fansher, Elton Young, Burnita Adair, Ruth Estes, Quentin Young, Wilda ‘Billie’ Conner.&nbsp;

It is with heavy heart that the family of FL Young announce his passing at 89, of Cheney.&nbsp; He was born in a farmhouse, near Cheney, graduated from Kingman High School, attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship, served a couple of years in the United States Army, then went back to college, joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and completed his Dairy Husbandry degree at Kansas State University.&nbsp; FL and Nyla (formally Nyla Arents, of Leonardville, KS) married in 1959. &nbsp;FL was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the Kansas Masonic Lodge, becoming a 33 degree Mason. Donald Menze entered his Heavenly home on August 26th, 2022, surrounded by his family at the Legends of Hutchinson.&nbsp; Don was born in rural Gosper County, NE at his parent’s home, to Carl H. and Lena A. (Hilker) Menze on June 28, 1937.&nbsp;

He attended Snowball school District #1 in Gosper County through eighth grade.&nbsp; He graduated from Arapahoe High School with the class of 1955 and furthered his education at McCook Community College.

Don joined the U.S. Armed Services in March 1957 spending one year in South Korea. Don was honorably discharged in December 1958.&nbsp; When he returned, he met the love of life, Freda Ann Sis and they were united in marriage on September 17, 1960, at St. John’s Nepomucene Catholic church in rural Rawlins County near Atwood.

Don began a lifetime career with the tire &amp; rubber industry.&nbsp; Beginning in McCook, NE at the Firestone Tire store, he later transferred to Hastings, NE.&nbsp; In August 1961, Don was recalled to the Army to serve at Fort Sill, OK during the Berlin Crisis.&nbsp; After being discharged in August of 1962, Don and his young family moved to North Platte, NE where he returned to working for Firestone Co.&nbsp; He continued his career in the tire and rubber industry moving with Firestone to Omaha NE, back to Hastings NE, and then Lincoln NE.&nbsp; He later joined the B.F. Goodrich Co managing stores in Waterloo, IA, and St. Charles, MO before moving to Hays, as a Regional Sales Manager for Goodrich.&nbsp; During his distinguished career, Don was recognized often for exceeding his sales goals and was awarded numerous trips around the world for Freda and him.

In 1983, Don and Freda became the owners of Gullickson Tire Co. in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They retired in 2004 with the sale of their tire business.

Don was a faithful member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, where he served as a past president of the parish council.&nbsp; He also was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus #612, Bishop Cushing’s Council of 4th&nbsp;Degree Knights, a founding member of the Serra Club of Reno County and attended Perpetual adoration.&nbsp; Don was also very active in the community.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion, served as president of the Mid-American Tire Dealers Assoc, served on the agriculture committee of the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce, and participated as a member of the Hutchinson C.C. Quarterback Club.

Along with his Catholic faith, his family was most important to him.&nbsp; He loved being with them, enjoying time watching and attending his children and grandchildren’s various activities.&nbsp; He enjoyed many card games, sequence board games and playing pool with his family and friends.&nbsp; He was a loyal fan to his KU Jayhawks, Nebraska Cornhuskers, KC Royals, and KC Chiefs. &nbsp;To those who knew him best, Don will be remembered for his generous heart.

Don was preceded in death most recently by his son, Bradley Menze, as well as an infant daughter.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;In addition, his parents, sisters: Carol Haussler, Judy (Wayne) Huxoll, Audre (Victor) Haussler and brothers: Bryce Menze and Larry Menze, all preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife of nearly 62 years.&nbsp; His children, Julie (Brian) White of Wichita; Sarah (Scott) Berry of Bentonville, AR; Ann (Jason) Graham of Hutchinson; and Anne Menze of Lenexa, KS.&nbsp; Grandchildren: Michael Berry, Connor Wolfe and fiancée Evelyn Medina, Nicole Berry, Noelle Graham, Megan White, and Nathan Menze.&nbsp; He also leaves many relatives, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends.

A public viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31st&nbsp;from 9am to 5pm at Elliot’s Mortuary, followed by a Rosary at 7:30pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church.&nbsp; Funeral services are planned for Thursday, September 1st&nbsp;at 10am at Holy Cross Catholic Church.&nbsp; Burial to follow at Memorial Park, Hutchinson.

Sam Lehman, 71, died August 24, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born August 14, 1951, in Hutchinson, to Glenn and Eunice (Wiard) Lehman.

Sam graduated from Burrton High School, and lived all of his life around cattle.&nbsp; He appreciated the camaraderie and friendships that grew from his career as a livestock cattleman.&nbsp; Sam spent most of his time at the sales barns in Hutchinson and Pratt, but he frequented others throughout Kansas and other states.&nbsp; He could develop a special connection to all animals (not just cows), and he would spend countless hours talking to them.&nbsp; Sam was always willing to lend a helping hand to others, and he considered his friends as family.&nbsp; Faith was also important to Sam throughout his life and he was a member of Bible Pathways Fellowship, Yoder.&nbsp; Even though his faith and cattle were important to Sam, nothing surpassed his love and support for his family.&nbsp; He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

On December 28, 1986, he married his best friend and soul mate of over three years, Donna (Luckey) Bieber, in Abbyville.

Sam is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of almost 36 years, Donna Lehman of Hutchinson: children, Samuel Lehman, Jr. (Melissa) of Buhler, Jennifer Lehman of Burrton, Glenn Lehman (Theresa) of Hutchinson, Debra Dodge (Mario) of Mission, Wayne Bieber (Salve) of Virginia, Tracy Bieber of Hutchinson, and Troy Bieber (Annie) of Florida; 12 grandchildren, Michelle, Cassie, Dawn, Erica, Sheridan, Ryan, Heather, Braydon, Wyatt, Thomas Payton, and Lane; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; numerous cousins; and countless friends.

Celebration of Life service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at Elliott Chapel.&nbsp; Private inurnment will be in the Burrton Cemetery. &nbsp;Friends may sign Sam’s book from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Chapel. Rita was born to Lawrence and Hazel Fairbanks Corcoran on September 28, 1939, in Boulder, Colorado.&nbsp; Her early years she lived in Colorado and Idaho and then moved to Onaga, with her family during grade school.&nbsp;

 She met James Hay at church in middle school who later became her husband. In high school, she was voted homecoming queen one year, and she also played basketball and softball. She participated in 4H and Future Homemakers of America, as well as other school related activities and organizations.&nbsp; Rita graduated from Emporia Teachers College in 1961 and went on to teach two years in Littleton, Colorado and one year in Hope.

Rita and James united in marriage on October 21, 1962, in Onaga. They moved to Herington, and had three children together. She encouraged their children to participate in everything from sports, church, friendships, music, and community activities that they had interests in and actively supported each of them every way she could.&nbsp; She was a skilled crafter and cook and had a lifelong love of creating. She was a seamstress and sewed everything form Sunday dresses, prom dresses to maid of honor and bridesmaids dresses. She created banners and crafts for First Baptist Church. &nbsp;She loved gardening, canning, creating floral arrangements, and painting, and used these skills for personal enjoyment as well as in different jobs she had over the years. When her grandchildren came into her life, she attended their events whenever she could and found great joy in spending time with each of them.

She was a humble servant of God and active at the Herington First Baptist Church where she and Jim were members for over 58 years. She volunteered in leadership roles in Sunday School, Guild Girls, and Vacation Bible School. She spent time on ABW projects, attended Bible Study, Circle Meetings, and enjoyed helping with AWANA in her later years.

Together, Rita and Jim traveled extensively in the United States their entire marriage.&nbsp; They planned family trips every summer, but Rita had a special love for Colorado.&nbsp; In 2001, they built a second home in Buena Vista, Colorado where they spent as much time as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; Jim and Rita were married for almost 60 years.

Rita, at the age of 82, passed away in Colorado. She is survived by her mother Hazel Wyss, children;&nbsp;Rex (Karen) Hay, Renae Hay, and Rosalyn (Jay) Lane grandchildren; Megan Hay, Shelby Hay, Aaron Lane, Abigail Hay, Cassie Lane, Benjamin Hay, Montgomery Hay, and Caoimhe Hay, great-grandchild; Zander, siblings; KC (Jean) Corcoran, Monty (Rose Marie) Wyss, Gary (Marilyn) Wyss, Jim (Jodi) Wyss, Carla (Ray) Hickman, and many nieces and nephews.
