Maria M. Dreisziger, 77, died June 17, 2022, in Parker, CO. She was born June 10, 1945, in Vöcklabruck, Austria, to Joseph and Magdalena (Scheffer) Norby.

Maria graduated from Bay Village High School in 1963 and Cum Laude Wichita State University, BS in Computer Science in 1985. She was retired computer programmer from Cessna. On November 16, 1963, she married the love of her life Adam Dreisziger, in Bay Village, OH. He died on August 30, 2018. She loved giving her time to the Hutchinson Symphony and the Hutchinson Public Library as well as tutoring English, playing the piano, oil painting and gardening. Maria had a weekly article in the opinion section of the Hutchinson News for many years where she had many followers.

Maria is survived by: son, Andrew (Renee) Dreisziger; daughter, Elena Dreisziger; grandchildren, Cassidy (Justin)Hood, Shayla Dreisziger, Daisy, Aidan, Calvin and Maggie Fisher, Jessi (David) Engel; great-grandchildren, Jaxith Dreisziger, Austin Davis and Blaze Walworth; sister, Yolanda Norby.

Robbie Gaynell Miller, 95, of Paradise Valley, AZ, died June 17, 2022, at Sun Quest Manor, Paradise Valley, AZ. She was born November 9, 1926,&nbsp; in Decatur, MS, the daughter of Clyde and Onnie Majure. Robbie was the 9th&nbsp;of 13 children.

Robbie was a lifetime resident of Hutchinson, where she was a school teacher, librarian, and remedial reading specialist for 17 years. She retired to Fountain Hills, AZ, where she lived for 11 years. Robbie was a member of&nbsp; First Baptist Church, Hutchinson, for 60 years, and was a current &nbsp;member of North Chapel, Fountain Hills, AZ.

On May 10, 1946, she married Christy C. Miller in Decatur, MS. &nbsp;He died April 30, 2009, after they shared almost 63 years of marriage.

Robbie is survived by: son, Freeman Lance Miller of Mission Hills; daughter, Brenda Gay Shaffer (Ron) of Fountain Hills, AZ; four grandchildren, Stephanie Shaffer Dieterich and Chris Shaffer and their families of Phoenix, AZ, and Emily Miller Hutsell and Jacob Miller and their families of &nbsp;Kansas City; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Joy Wilson McCool and Vicki Souder.

She was preceeded in death by: her parents; daughter-in-law, Barbara Allphin Miller, MD; and 10 brothers and sisters.

She worked as a Registered Nurse. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a member of Altar Society and taught CCD . She was an avid gardener but also enjoyed volunteering with the Senior Center in Pratt, crafting, tatting lace, playing cards with her girl friends and spending time with grandchildren whether it be babysitting or attending their activities. She is survived by daughters, Dana Murphey of Ellinwood and Heather Murphey of Cunningham; sister, Delores (Marion "Bud") Sloan of Joplin, Missouri; grandchildren, Ian Murphey Hosler of Ellinwood and Marlow Murphey Hosler of Manhattan. Mary Ellen Shank, 86 left to walk hand in hand with the angels on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at age 86 at Grand Plains Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation of Pratt. 

She was born at the family home southwest of St. John on December 24, 1935. She died after a valiantly fought long illness. Her pain is now gone as she rejoices in heaven. Predeceased by her mother Cora Helen Waters, father Harry Judah Waters, sister Harriet (B.D) McAnally, brother Ernest (Alice) Waters. She is survived by her loving husband Robert Shank, and her surviving children Theryne (Steve) Schwartz of Colwich, and Kevyn Shank of Pratt.

Mary Ellen attended rural Livingston Grade School. She was a Polio survivor and as a child was in an iron lung ventilator for many months. She graduated from St. John High School in 1954. She was a graduate of St. John High School and McPherson College, a private college associated with the Church of the Brethren. She taught 4th grade at Johnson Elementary, Johnson, before she married the love of her life Robert.

On March 17th, 1957, she married Robert Henry Shank at The Eden Valley Church of the Brethren in St. John. Her only regret is leaving Robert, whom she loved completely and faithfully for 65 years.

Mary Ellen was active in the Federation of Democratic Women of Kansas where she served as State President and Vice-President for many years. She also served as Governor Robert B. Docking’s alternate delegate at the Democratic National Committee in Florida. She was Director of the Girls Club in Bartlesville, OK when the family lived in Oklahoma. She retired from Plus Six Hallmark Stores Pratt. Mary Ellen loved crossword puzzles, reading, painting, gardening, and genealogy. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of Union Soldiers. Her love of animals her cats, dogs &amp; horses but her greatest love above all else was her family. The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses at the Pratt Regional Medical Center and Grand Plains Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation and Interim Hospice Health Care for their unparalleled compassion for her and her family. A graveside celebration service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at Neelands Cemetery, Southwest 40th Street, St. John, with John Hamm presiding.

Helen Marie Simon, 100 years old, (born November 29, 1921) of Maize, passed away on June 15, 2022. Helen was born to Jennie and Harry Nicholson of Maize. She is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Marcellus “Sally” Simon, and her five brothers, Bill (1903-1978), Jim (1905-1936), Gene (Cricket 1907-1977), Clyde (Trapper- 1909-2001), and George (1917-1995).

Helen wed Marcellus (Sally) Simon on August 13th, of 1946. Together, Sally and Helen built their farmstead and raised two children, Steve Simon (Sherryl Simon) and Diane Taylor (Michael Taylor) both of Maize, Kansas. Along with the farm operation they built, Sally and Helen opened the doors to M&amp;N Raceway (Now Kansas International Drag-way) in 1963.

Helen was always the hardest worker on the farm and she was the first to let you know that. She could always be found helping in the chutes, running grain to the elevator, swathing hay, or helping build fence. Her work ethic was truly unmatched. In her later years she could be found cruising around on her John Deere Gator causing havoc to her neighbors and keeping her family busy tracking her down. She was the glue that held her family together.

Helen leaves behind her two children, 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, friend, and so much more. Helen will deeply missed by all those who were lucky enough to know her.

Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, at Baker Funeral Home Chapel - Valley Center. Graveside will follow the service at Maize Park Cemetery, 12733 W. 53rd St. N., Maize, Kansas.

B. Ray Bratcher, 92, of McPherson, and formerly of Maysville, OK, peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022, surrounded by family at Brookdale Assisted Living, McPherson.&nbsp; He was a farmer and also was a gas plant operator, pipeline operator, and truck driver.

Ray was born on May 11, 1930, in Washington, OK.&nbsp; He graduated from high school in Maysville, OK.&nbsp; &nbsp;

He served in the United States Air Force.

On April 15, 1950, Ray was united in marriage to Winonah Frances White in Gainesville, TX.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on February 28, 1986.&nbsp; He married Leona Mabel (Jacobson) Whited on April 3, 1997, in McPherson.

Survivors include: his wife, Leona; children, Mike Bratcher (Lou Rice) of Houston, TX; Kent Bratcher (Rhonda) of Yukon, OK; Gary Bratcher (Donna Taylor) of Dallas, TX; Gary Wayne Whited (Arnell) of Hutchinson; Ron Whited (Carolyn) of Grifton, NC; and Wanda Weyand (Robert) of McPherson; a brother, Garland Bratcher (Vivian) of Maysville, OK; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eula Bratcher, and siblings, Joyce Carlberg, Wanda Johnson, and Burnis Bratcher.

Gary Robert Armour, 73, of Shawnee, passed away Friday, June 17, 2022 at his home after a 17 month courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  Gary was born September 7, 1948 in Dunkirk, NY to the late Robert E. and Elinor S. (Hubbard) Armour.  

He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Baker on July 15, 1967 at Salina First Presbyterian Church.  Gary earned a Master’s degree from Kansas State University and was a career Mathematics Teacher. He began his teaching career at Clay Center. For 9 years. Gary then taught 24 years at  Salina Central, 7 years at McPherson, and 1 year at Erie CO. He also taught part-time at K-State Salina.  Gary also coached football, basketball, and wrestling during his career. In 1996 he was the USD 305 Secondary Teacher of the Year and a candidate for Kansas Teacher of the Year. Gary believed that teaching was a calling and he loved teaching and interacting with his students. He was a member of Salina First Presbyterian Church, KNEA, and Phi Kappa Phi.  

He is survived by his wife: Janice Armour, of Shawnee; daughters: Dr. Chris Pickett, D.V.M. of Shawnee; and Penny Armour (John Walker) of Draper, UT; sons: Michael Armour (Cindy) of Benicia, CA; and Tim Armour (Lesley Reed) of Baton Rouge, LA;  sister: Sue Hine (Rod) of Concordia; as well as nine grandchildren: Emily Armour, Ellen Armour, Alicia Pickett, Josh Pickett, Noah Pickett, Natalie Bowman, Andrew Bowman, Jack Bowman, and Quinnlan Armour. Gary is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was born March 12, 1936, at Mt. Belvieu, Texas the son of John Sweeney and Martha Catherine Arbaugh Duhon.&nbsp; A Kingman resident since 1978, he was a retired painter for Cessna AirCraft.

She was born Aug. 16, 1951, in Kingman the daughter of Carl and Shirley Robinson Ingram.&nbsp; A longtime Kingman resident having also lived in Belmont, she retired Cessna Aircraft but later worked for Mollie’s Attic and Mize Wire.

Karen was a member of the Kingman Christian Church.

Daniel loved life, especially spending time and going places with his children and grandchildren; he had a sense of humor and was sarcastic.&nbsp; During his working career, he was a welder and also served for 32 years in the military as a First Lieutenant, being stationed in Iraq and Kosovo.&nbsp; Daniel enjoyed watching Sci-Fi and Action movies; flipping houses; fly-fishing, animals, and guns.

Marla worked in the Wichita Public School system and had various other jobs including Green Acres Health Food Store.&nbsp;

Marla enjoyed writing, photography, reading and spending time with family and friends. Her love of the mountains led her on several trips to Colorado. She was a strong prayer warrior. She loved the Lord and went to Him in prayer for her family and friends. Marla also had a burden for the lost and would witness to them about their need for a savior. She also would help thsoe in need with a helping hand of food.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Phil Cunningham.

Marla is survived by her sisters Lynette (Lyle) Dejmal of Hill City, Kansas, Denise (Terry) Michael of Wichita, Kansas, sister-in-law Janet Cunningham of Wichita, Kansas, 6 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews.

(Loomis) Modlin.&nbsp; On February 17, 1961, he married Joyce E. Houdek in Scandia, KS.&nbsp; To this union they were blessed with two boys, Terry and Bradly.&nbsp; Fred was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1956 to 1960, when he was honorably discharged after serving in the Vietnam era.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion and VFW.&nbsp; After the military, Fred was elected sheriff for the Cloud County Sherriff Dept. and truly enjoyed his job retiring after serving 24 years in law enforcement.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Phyllis O’Brien, Carol Garst, Douglas Modlin, Letha Garst and Curtis Modlin. Together, Sally and Helen built their farmstead and raised two children, Steve Simon (Sherryl Simon) and Diane Taylor (Michael Taylor) both of Maize, Kansas. Along with the farm operation they built, Sally and Helen opened the doors to M&amp;N Raceway (Now Kansas International Drag-way) in 1963.Helen was always the hardest worker on the farm and she was the first to let you know that. She could always be found helping in the chutes, running grain to the elevator, swathing hay, or helping build fence. Her work ethic was truly unmatched. In her later years she could be found cruising around on her John Deere Gator causing havoc to her neighbors and keeping her family busy tracking her down. She was the glue that held her family together.Helen leaves behind her two children, 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, friend, and so much more. Elinor Jean Scott, age 96, of Hays, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2022.

She was born on the family farm May 10,
 1926, to Albert and Nellie (Rychel) Yost.&nbsp; Growing up near Downs with 
her two brothers, she endured the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, 
learning early on about hard work and thrift and perseverance. &nbsp;She 
maintained these qualities for the rest of her life. &nbsp;

She attended Downs High School, 
graduating in 1945. &nbsp;On August 3, 1946, she was united in marriage with 
Ralph W. Scott at Williams Air Base in Chandler, Arizona.&nbsp; Upon Ralph’s 
release from the Army Air Corps, both Elinor and Ralph attended the 
University of Kansas, where Elinor earned her Bachelor’s degree in 
Education, and Ralph earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. 
Following their graduations, they raised their four children in Smith 
Center and Hays, Kansas.

Elinor delayed her teaching career 
until all four children reached grade school. &nbsp;She then taught fourth 
grade at Wilson Elementary school for 25 years, retiring in the early '90s. In retirement, she remained active with her responsibilities at 
the First Presbyterian Church of Hays and enjoyed bridge club, KU 
basketball, travel, socializing with friends and attending family 
gatherings.

Elinor is survived by two daughters and
 two sons: Barbara Lambert (Dennis) of Hutchinson, Martin Scott of 
Florida, Diane Scott (Dan) of Hays, Dane Scott (Nora) of Colorado 
Springs, grandchildren: Lance Lambert (Sarah), Meghan Carafano (Luke), 
Troy Lambert (Lacy), Alicia Pino (Marc), Matthew Tucker, Tyler Scott, 
Hope Hamlin, Grace Hamlin, and Mason Hamlin, and ten great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her 
husband of 61 years Ralph Scott, her brothers: George Yost and Larry 
Yost, and her parents Albert and Nellie Yost.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, Hays, with 
Rev. Christine Wagner officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be at at 2:30 pm in the

Darrell Leon Bowen, 50, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at his home in McPherson.&nbsp; He was formerly of Luray, Kansas where he owned and operated Big Daddy’s Bar.&nbsp; He also worked at Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (Russell,) as a medical tech.

He was born April 26, 1972, in McPherson, the son of Ronald Nugent and LaVona Jean (Anthony) Bowen.&nbsp; He graduated from Lucas-Luray High School in 1990.

On June 7, 2008, Darrell was united in marriage to April D. Henson in Lucas.

Survivors include: his wife, April of the home; two sons, Walker Brown (Alexis) of Hutchinson; and Dakota Brown of McPherson; a brother, Tom Bowen (Tammara) of Hutchinson; two sisters, Lora Ensz (Todd) of McPherson, and Cheryl Pemberton (John) of Belton, MO; two grandchildren, Quinn and Serenity Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Eugene Bowen.

A celebration of Darrell’s life (come &amp; go visitation) will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, June 24, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in the Luray Cemetery on Saturday, June 25.

Wayne Blue, 75, of Hesston, passed away at 2:51 PM, Tuesday, June 14th, 2022 while in the company of family, at Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita. Wayne was born in Wichita, on September 27, 1946, a son of Lucille May (Baldridge) and Richard Morris Blue, Sr. Wayne attended the Arlington grade schools and High School, Arlington, Texas. Wayne enlisted into the United States Marine Corps and honorably served as a Sgt in the Vietnam War. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w2*. Following his honorable discharge he attended and graduated from Santa Ana Junior College, Santa Ana, California. After moving to McPherson he then attended and graduated from McPherson College, McPherson. Wayne Blue was united in marriage to Lauren Susan Ewertz on August 12, 1966 at Fullerton, California. The young couple established their first home together in El Toro Marine Corps Base, El Toro, California. This union was blessed with the birth of three daughters, Nona, Michelle, and Heather. The family moved to Yorba Linda, California in 1972 until 1981 when the family moved to McPherson. Wayne was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Canton, Grace Lutheran Church, McPherson, and Zion Lutheran Church Newton, where he served in many capacities. He was Baptized into Christ and Confirmed on December 20, 1970. Wayne was a jack of all trades and a master of none. He worked as a screw inspector for a company in Santa Anna, California, a supervisor for the Alpha Beta Creamery in California, was an independent roofer, worked for Alcor as a supervisor, Swick Guth in customer service, and became an independent Insurance Agent all of McPherson. Wayne was a member of the American Legion Post 24; McPherson, Kansas and served as Commander as well as serving in many other capacities. Wayne enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in their sports and activities, gardening, fishing, woodworking and making stain glass windows, working on his home and others with many projects until his health would not permit him to do so, and spending time with his family especially his grandkids. The Grandkids loved teasing grandpa by calling him Howie or Moses. Margie Schmidt entered the presence of the Lord on June 15, 2022 at the Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born May 27, 1940 in Cordell, Oklahoma to loving parents John and Susie Rempel. 

She grew up in a large white farmhouse outside of Corn, Oklahoma spending time with many of her beloved 70 first cousins, gathering eggs, enjoying her cats, playing with dolls, and making mud-pies, all activities that foreshadowed her amazing homemaking skills. When she was 5, she started spending her summers cooking alongside her mom for her dad’s custom harvesting crew on a cook stove in a small trailer without running water. Because of those experiences, she promised herself she would not marry a custom harvester, not knowing the boy, Geral Schmidt, in her 12-person class that she started dating at 16 would indeed become a custom harvester. 

At Corn High School, she was a spunky cheerleader and a member of the 3-on-3 women’s basketball team. She married Geral at 19 and was an incredible help-mate to him both in sickness and in health during their 61 years of marriage. Margie was the first in her family to graduate from college, earning her Business and Home Economics degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. While her greatest calling was serving as a wise and nurturing mother to Clark and Susan, she also taught business, home economics, and government classes to high school students in the Lorraine, Alden and Sterling school districts for about 20 years before transitioning to a substitute role. She said teaching high school students was “exhilarating.” During the summers until she was 65, she worked tirelessly cooking and delivering delicious and hearty meals to the field for an 8-12 person crew on a wheat harvest run that went from Texas to Montana. During her harvesting career that spanned 60 years she mothered not only Clark and Susan but also “her boys” on the crew. She was also a gifted business manager with a great mind for details. However, her greatest joy was her role as a very loving and supportive “Mimi” to her 5 grandchildren; she attended as many of their activities and birthday parties as possible, loved making cookies or playing games with them, and hosted incredible Christmas celebrations. Margie was also a talented seamstress who sewed clothes in her younger years and transitioned in later years to creating beautiful quilts that her family cherishes. She also loved visiting with her many dear friends and reading as a part of the Page Turners Book Club. As a member of United Methodist Church in Sterling, she served as a trustee and faithful volunteer with her beloved church family and helped start a group that made quilts for veterans and shut-ins. Margie served in every possible office in PEO, as both president and vice-president of Sorosis, and as president of Rice County Republican Women. She also served on the Board of Trustees of Sterling College, South Central Community Foundation, and Republican Central Committee. 

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, John E. Rempel, sister-in-law, Erna, and niece, Maxine. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Lee) of Dallas, and son, Clark (Jessica), of Sterling as well as her grandchildren Garrett (Claire) and Allison Riffe of Dallas and Debra, Wyatt, and Waylon Schmidt of Sterling. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Loretta (Howard) Schmidt of Corn, Oklahoma and Barbara (Ron) Goodman of Conway, Arkansas as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 20, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Pastor Amy Foster officiating. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Virginia graduated from Tulsa Central High School, Tulsa, OK, in 1964.&nbsp; She worked as a certified nurse’s aide and certified medication aide at Buhler Sunshine Home and KSIR.&nbsp; Virginia enjoyed quilting, reading, Bingo, and writing her life story. She was a member of St. Mary Orthodox Christian Church, Wichita.

Virginia is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Michelle Estes (Michael) of Troy and Susanne Gehring of Buhler; brother, Duwayne Hankins (Joetta) of Kingman, AZ; sister, Rosa Lee Hankins; bonus sister, Sarah Hendrixson (John), all of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Grace Anne Estes, Caitlin Hernandez (Adan), Jake Gehring (Kayt), and Jackson Gehring; and two great-grandchildren, Emilia Hernandez and Russell Gehring.

Richard Hilt, 90, of Hutchinson, died June 15, 2022, at Reflection Living. He was born December 17, 1931, in Pratt, to John and Thelma (Taylor) Hilt.

Richard graduated from Coldwater High School and then served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver for most of his life. Richard enjoyed going dancing at the Moose Lodge and collecting model trains. He was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ.

Richard is survived by: daughter, Sheila Alexander, Topeka; sons, Terry Hilt, Wichita, David Hilt (Denise), Fort Worth, Texas, Calvin Hilt (Lisa), Augusta; daughter, Tamara Hilt, Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Eric and Jason Alexander, Chelsea Cole (Russell), William Hilt, Alexandra (Eric), Sabrina Hilt, Kalie Graves, Raef Hilt, Nathaniel Muci, Ben, Tim, and Becky Hill; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Linda, Texas, and Betty Hilt, Chicago.

Richard Hilt  |1931-2022|  

Terry Lee Jenks, 68, died June 15, 2022, at his home. He was born July 9, 1953, in Hutchinson, to James E. and Clara M. (Barnes) Jenks.

Terry was a loving father and grandfather. His lifelong passion was music - owning his own music store / recording studio, “Paradise Sound”, and singing in the “Terry Jenks and The Chapel Singers.” Terry also owned “King’s Royal Imports” in the Hutchinson Mall, was a carpenter and a fireman, and enjoyed military history and old money. He was a lifelong member of Full Gospel Fellowship, which his parents started. He loved singing in the church and was proud of his sisters, Cora and Patty, taking over when his mother wasn’t able. Church, music, and family were his life.

On July 22, 1974, Terry married Lela M. Metzger, in Hutchinson. They later divorced but remained close friends.

He is survived by: his children, Heath Jenks of Hutchinson, Heather Streck and husband Ryan of Great Bend; grandchildren, Paige, Haley, Gracie Jenks, Cole Streck, Blake Streck; brother, Richard Jenks of Hutchinson; sister, Cora Stokely and husband Jerry of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, and wife Virginia; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Don Jenks; sister, Patty Widup and her husband, Harold; and stepfather, Dallas Kimzey.

His lifelong passion was music - owning his own music store / recording studio, “Paradise Sound”, and singing in the “Terry Jenks and The Chapel Singers.” Terry also owned “King’s Royal Imports” in the Hutchinson Mall, was a carpenter and a fireman, and enjoyed military history and old money. He was a lifelong member of Full Gospel Fellowship, which his parents started. He loved singing in the church and was proud of his sisters, Cora and Patty, taking over when his mother wasn’t able. Church, music, and family were his life.On July 22, 1974, Terry married Lela M. Metzger, in Hutchinson. They later divorced but remained close friends.He is survived by: his children, Heath Jenks of Hutchinson, Heather Streck and husband Ryan of Great Bend; grandchildren, Paige, Haley, Gracie Jenks, Cole Streck, Blake Streck; brother, Richard Jenks of Hutchinson; sister, Cora Stokely and husband Jerry of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, and wife Virginia; and many extended family members.He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Don Jenks; sister, Patty Widup and her husband, Harold; and stepfather, Dallas Kimzey.Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Stuart (Stu) Allen Spangler, 72, of Sabetha, died Tuesday evening, June 14, 2022 at Lakeside Terrace in Sabetha.

Stuart was born on September 5, 1949 to Merl C. (Cap) and Isabel A. (Izzie) Baxter Spangler. He was welcomed home by an older sister, Alice Ann.&nbsp; Stuart grew up in Herington, where his favorite thing to do was ride his bike around Herington picking up cans. He loved to watch people at work outside and kids at play at the swimming pool, park, and ball fields in the summer months.&nbsp; He was very friendly but shy. He lived a block from the train tracks and liked to watch the train switch in the yard.&nbsp; The 4th&nbsp;of July and Christmas were his favorite holidays.&nbsp; He would light firecrackers with one hand, covering his ears with the other hand.&nbsp; Santa would deliver his presents via a helicopter instead of a sleigh.

Stuart loved spending time and going on vacation with his sister’s family, Alice and Robert Bell, nephews, Marty &amp; Robbin, and niece, Terri. They often traveled to Colorado staying in cabins at Colorado Springs and Estes Park.&nbsp; They also traveled to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

Stuart left Herington around 1984 for Topeka and then moved to Seneca in May of 1990. &nbsp;Except for a 2-year trial of living in his own apartment, Stuart lived at a group home operated by the Nemaha County Training Center. Stuart received support services from NCTC from 1990 to 2018 when he moved to Lakeside Terrace in Sabetha.&nbsp; He was employed by the J-6 Farms hog operation in rural Seneca from September 1995 to June 2011.&nbsp; Stuart absolutely loved working at J-6 with the little pigs!&nbsp; He developed a wonderful friendship with his supervisor, Bob Boden and his wife, Joyce, and other employees at the farm. These were friendships that he cherished and would fondly talk about even after retiring from J-6.

Stuart always had a love for the railroad, which he got from his father.&nbsp; Merl worked for the Rock Island Railroad, holding various jobs including fireman, brake-man, engineer, and conductor.&nbsp; Stuart’s room was always decorated with train décor that he loved to collect, and he loved to wear t-shirts with train logos and his engineer’s cap. For his 50th&nbsp;birthday, his wonderful friends, Lorna and Ed Farrell, took him to Railroad Days in Topeka.&nbsp; While at Lakeside Terrace he was able to go see the Union Pacific Big Boy Steam Engine and frequently visited Van’s Electric model train collection in Fairview, Kansas.&nbsp; Stuart always looked forward to every holiday because his loving niece, Terri, would always send him a package.&nbsp; Stuart cherished each package she sent.

Stuart was known by everyone in Seneca and was very self-sufficient!&nbsp; Stuart would visit every job site, inquiring on what they were building and monitoring their progress.&nbsp; He would also sit for hours by the railroad tracks when a train crew was working.&nbsp; He was known to ride his tricycle around town helping keep Seneca clean.&nbsp; Stuart had a wagon made for his tricycle so he could pick up trash or pop cans to recycle.&nbsp; You never knew what Stuart was going to bring home that were “treasures” in his wagon!&nbsp; He always had a plan or a project in mind for those “treasures” he found along the way.

Stuart was preceded in death by his parents, Merl on November 3, 1984, and Isabel on November 10, 1981; his sister and brother-in-law, Alice Ann Bell on November 22, 2013 and Robert J. Bell on December 26, 2021; and a great-nephew, Colbie Bell.

Stuart is survived by his legal guardian and long-time friend, Susan L. Bowman and husband, Dr. David A. Bowman; his nephews, Marty (wife, Kelly) Bell and Robbin Bell; his niece, Terri Winter (husband, Ron); great-nephews, Tyler Bell and Colton Bell; a great-niece, Brooke Bell; and many wonderful and caring friends in the Sabetha and Seneca communities.

A memorial will be held at a later date in the Fellowship Center at 1441 Virginia St., Sabetha. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington, at a later date.

Geraldine Evelyn “Gerry” Bircher, 94, died peacefully June 15, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born June 6, 1928, in Walton, to Paul Vernon and Viola Martha (Weiser) Stratton.&nbsp;

Gerry graduated from Walton High School in 1946 and attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, majoring in music.&nbsp; While there, she met her future husband, Kenneth Orville (KO) Bircher.&nbsp; They were married May 28, 1948, in Walton, and shared almost 74 years of marriage before his death on March 2, 2022.&nbsp;

After marriage, Gerry and KO moved to Galva and then Norwich, where she began her lifelong love and passion of giving piano and organ lessons in her home. Over the years, she taught hundreds of students to play the piano and organ.&nbsp; Gerry was a talented and gifted musician who could sight-read and transpose any piece of music.&nbsp; She played for weddings (even some of her own children’s weddings), funerals, and served as the church organist for many area churches; if music was involved, she wanted to be a part of the event.&nbsp; Gerry entertained the crowds at the NJCAA basketball tournament, the Miss Hutch Pageant, and accompanied various performers at the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp; She also helped the family run the Drummer Boy restaurant and manage rental properties, when she was not teaching or playing the piano or organ for some community event.&nbsp;

With her busy schedule, she had little time for hobbies, but Gerry loved to cook for her five active children, and many of their friends, who she would take under her wing and offer a place to stay.&nbsp; She loved to babysit her grandchildren, and enjoyed visits from her great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Watching basketball and baseball, and playing Bridge were also some of Gerry’s favorite pastimes.&nbsp;

Gerry is survived by:&nbsp; children, Diane Shirack (Mike) of Centennial, CO, Joan Gibson (Roger) of Wichita, Gene Bircher (Jennifer) of&nbsp; Longmont, CO, Paula Payton (Greg) of Hutchinson, and Craig Bircher (Mary) of Richmond, VA; brother, Alden Stratton of Hesston; grandchildren, Chad Shirack (Lora), Amanda Herndon (Dustin), Curtis Gibson (Kara), Kinzie Flowers (James), Bailey Lardes (Doug), Will Bircher (Morgan), Morgan Starkweather (James), Grady Payton (Brooke), Samantha Rose, Crosby Branham (Cody), Dr. Walter G. Bircher, and Dr. Josie Bircher; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Many years ago, Gerry and KO built a cabin in Southeast Colorado that is now a family heirloom.&nbsp; Countless memories have been made throughout the years at the cabin.&nbsp; It was Gerry and KO’s wishes to have a private family service at the cabin.
