Annual Buhler Frolic is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cause for Paws put out on Facebook that the Animal Shelter needed food to give out to those in the community that ask for it for their pets. The animals in the shelter are covered by an ongoing contract, but they have very limited storage space and they just recieved $500 worth from Midway Motors, so they are full right now.

"We often have people in this community that come up to the shelter asking for food, because they can't afford to feed their pet," Schommer said. "It's called intake diversion, when shelters provide other resources instead of taking in the pet. If we can keep pets in their own homes, we need to be finding ways to support them to stay in their home. Sometimes, people just need dog food for a few weeks to get by, instead of having to surrender their dog and give it up to a shelter."

Schommer said cash donations for that purpose would be welcome, or a small group of people who could make a regular small donation, once the Midway donation is exhausted. Call Schommer at the shelter for more information at (620) 694-1924.

Animal Shelter taking food donations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing gave an update to the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday.

"It's been a very successful year," Nightingale said. "I've met with the city council a couple times and talked to them about what's going on there at the fairgrounds. To kind of give you an update, that racetrack was basically raced once a year. To try to race on that track once a year is not good. It's hard to get a track prepared and ready to go. That facility, it's been around for many, many years. I'm not here to talk about the history of that track, but the facility is really cool and really good for a spectator to come watch races."

Despite the rainout on Sept. 20, the attendance figures in the grandstand have averaged over 1600, with over 300 per night on average in the pits, and one more night of racing coming up Oct. 5.

"Our biggest race we had this year was the USAC race," Nightingale said. "We brought those cars in here and they did a hundred lap race. It was the 14th time in the whole history of the track that a 100 lap race was completed. There was a lot of speculation whether we could get a hundred lap race in, if the track would hold it, or whatever. I brought a guy in from Iowa to help me prep the track the first of the year. I'm telling you, I think the track could have done 150 laps, as well as the track held up. We had an exciting race. It was very fun. I will tell you that, there was not a hotel room available in Hutchinson. There was not a hotel room available in McPherson. How I know that is, a gentleman from IMCA, who is our sanctioning body that sanctions most of our races, tried to get a hotel room in both of those towns and he had to stay in Salina."

Nightingale is waiting on the Fair Board's meeting on Oct. 15 to see if they will approve a five-year deal. If they do, he has big plans.

"Katy, bar the door for what we have coming," Nightingale said. "We have sanctioning bodies already calling us. We're already talking to some other sanctioning bodies. As big as that USAC race was to come in to race, hopefully, we're going to get three more of those, so it would be four of those big races for next year. I'm here just basically to be aware of what's happening at the racetrack. I don't know what support Reno County can do."

Nightingale noted that the City of Hutchinson has given him the water for the track all season long.

Nightingale gives racetrack update

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — U.S. 50 bridge repair work will start soon in eastern Reno County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project is on the U.S. 50 bridge over a railroad three-quarters of a mile west of the Reno/Harvey County line.&nbsp;

The work is expected to begin around Oct. 7 and be completed around the end of May, depending on the weather.

During the work, traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or traffic signals. Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

PBX Corp., of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, is the primary contractor for the $898,150 project.

U.S. 50 bridge work to start next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School class of 2004 will be celebrating its 20th reunion on Saturday, Oct. 5 at The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. This will be an action-packed weekend in conjunction with The Downtown Hutch Rod Run and Hutch Fest.

Hutch Fest and the Rod Run are both on Friday Oct. 4 through Saturday Oct. 5 in Downtown Hutchinson.

There will be activities for kids, live music, food trucks and much more. On Saturday, Hutch Rec is hosting a Brewfest featuring craft and homebrewed beers.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, graduates of 2004 will be able to tour Hutch High at 10 a.m. A ticket gets you into the Cosmosphere at 6:00 p.m. Dinner from Hickory Stik will be served at 6:30 p.m. with dessert from Carriage Crossing. The night will feature trivia from the years 2000 to 2004, a photo booth, awards and and special guest appearance by Sammy The Salthawk!

Hutch High 2004 reunion is Oct. 4 and 5

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Lauren Storm with the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce works on retention and expansion of existing businesses in the community. One of those businesses that is working hard to expand is Superior Boiler.

"Superior Boiler is a great example of a partnering business, and especially in the manufacturing field in our community," Storm said. "One way that they have gotten creative and that we've been able to partner with them is to work with the city and the county to create a Reno County relocation incentive program. It's a program that incentivizes workers to move into Reno County from outside of the county. At this point, we do have a couple of their employees that have taken advantage of these matching funds that the county will use from their economic development reserves and then accrue matching funds from the company. We've even had partnering businesses jump on board with that in those recruitment efforts to provide gift certificates and vouchers to welcome those people into the community."

Another business looking to hire is Collins Bus.

"Ever since their acquisition by Forest River Inc. last year, they have hired 60 new employees since February," Storm said. "They're also a company that hires well above the prevailing average wage, and also act very collaboratively in the community and realize that one of the highest commodities in the workforce field for manufacturing is welders, but not all welders have the same skillset or discipline and not all companies require the same thing. Both Superior and Collins have worked collaboratively in order to even recommend, if there's a welder that comes in with a skillset that they might recommend to one of our other great manufacturers, then they can send that skillset that way to help to kind of rise the tide for everyone."

It's important to continue to improve the quality of life for these new people as they come to town, too.

"Companies aren't just vetting the numbers, the size, the cost, the production, the workforce, but also the place," Storm said. "What are these employees going to do and how are they going to feel living here? And we care very deeply about that in our community. And the way that we are going to find success is by accruing everyone that also cares about developing that to make this the best place to live in the state."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The&nbsp;Rotary&nbsp;Club of Hutchinson will hold its next meeting Monday, Sept. 30 at noon at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. The public is invited to attend.

The speaker will be Dr. Nataliya Biskup, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Hutchinson Clinic. She will share her story about her mission trips to Ukraine to&nbsp;operate on wounded soldiers and kids with cleft lip.

Dr. Nataliya Biskup is a board-certified plastic surgeon. She has completed a comprehensive, integrated plastic surgery program in Southern California. She then went on to complete a fellowship in Cleft, Craniofacial, and pediatric plastic surgery at the prestigious Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She specializes in Cleft, Craniofacial, and pediatric plastic surgery, including complex craniomaxillofacial reconstruction. She is proud to serve as the Director of the Kansas Cleft and Craniofacial Center. 

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Biskup is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Surgery and participates in the education and training of surgical residents at the University of Kansas School of Medicine - Wichita (UKSM-W). She participates in and facilitates research studies for students and residents interested in plastic surgery.

Biskup to speak to Rotary Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Harlan Depew with Reno County's maintenance department talked to the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday about the controller for the HVAC at the Courthouse, LEC and Health Department. He said it was installed in 2008.

"Part of that project was installing controls for the new boilers and chillers and pumps and equipment, rooftop units, split units at the courthouse, law enforcement center, and at the health department,"&nbsp; Depew said. "That system is now, what would that be, 15 years old?&nbsp; We've kind of limped along with it for the last few years as it went obsolete. Eventually, one of the main controllers has failed in that system, and parts are no longer available. It's time, we're going to have to do something about that to get that system updated to current technology."

Depew checked in to getting the county all on a system from Siemens, but that didn't work out.

"The cost to convert the older system to the DeZego from Siemens is, I just can't justify that much more cost," Depew said.&nbsp; "Our recommendation is to update the system that we have through Sandifer Engineering, and the cost of that was $55,012.58."

Commissioner Ron Hirst also suggested that changing the settings on the system might help in the long run.&nbsp;

"I think it's time that the county takes a serious look at what these temperatures are in the rooms," Hirst said. "That will save enough money in a short period of time to cover this cost."

Commissioner John Whitesel also suggested just putting a sign up letting staff know what the temperatures should be set at, as most people will adjust.

Commission approves new HVAC controls

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas says consumers are in a better position at the pump now than they were in 2023.

"The Kansas average gas price has stayed pretty stable and still low at $2.90 a gallon, on average," Steward said. "That's down one cent in the past week and down 17 cents from where we were a month ago. The Kansas average is right now about 32 cents below the national average. That puts us at 10th lowest average gas price in the nation. Especially when we look at where we were in Kansas at $3.66 a gallon a year ago, certainly can't complain."

Area county average prices are on both sides of the state average.

"Gas demand and oil costs are low right now," Steward said. "The West Texas Intermediate Crude price right now is just a little below $68 per barrel, which is fairly low. Demand has been fairly lackluster recently. Combine those two factors and that's what's keeping our gas prices low at the pumps."

It looks like we'll stay below $3 in Kansas for some time to come.

"There's not really any indicators currently that we're going to see any kind of big jumps in gas prices, or any jumps, for that matter for the foreseeable future," Steward said. "Certainly, things can always change geopolitically in the Middle East, or with hurricanes."

Generally, if hurricanes are in Florida or the southeast, they don't impact prices here much, but if they are in Louisiana and Texas, they could change prices in the short term.

Pump prices continue at lower levels than last year

Producers have a lot to consider when deciding when to start planting wheat — moisture, soil temperature, Hessian fly-free dates and more. Based on research from Kansas State University, another one of these considerations may appear small, at least physically, but could have a big impact come harvest — coleoptile length.&nbsp;

When a wheat seed germinates, one of the first structures to emerge from the seed after the seminal roots is the coleoptile. This plant part is a rigid protective structure that covers the emerging shoot of a wheat plant. As the wheat plant develops, this covering continues to elongate as the young seedling pushes through the soil until it breaks the surface and reaches sunlight. Then, the coleoptile stops growing and the first true leaf emerges through it.&nbsp;

However, if a wheat seed is planted too deep or into the wrong soil conditions, the coleoptile may not be able to break through the soil, leading to a variety of compounding issues for wheat stand establishment. In this case, when the coleoptile is unable to emerge, the first true leaf may emerge underneath the soil’s surface. Then, the leaf takes on an accordion-like appearance, the wheat plant typically becomes yellow and eventually the plant dies. Even if the plant survives, it has limited access to nutrients and sunlight and will result in lower yields.&nbsp;

So how do producers prevent this situation? In dryland environments like western Kansas, producers often “dust in” their wheat or plant into dry soil and rely on deeper subsoil moisture, requiring deeper planting depths. To succeed in this common scenario, farmers should select wheat varieties with longer coleoptile lengths that will help the wheat plant make it from the deeper planting to the soil surface.&nbsp;

An additional consideration is soil temperature. Planting wheat too early into warm soil temperatures can further reduce the coleoptile length. Some varieties will not germinate when soil temperatures are greater than 85°F and coleoptile length can be reduced by as much as 60 percent in higher temperatures. K-State recommends that if producers choose to plant in warmer soil temperatures, plant at a shallower depth (3/4 to 1 inch deep), even if moisture is absent in the top layers of soil. Planting wheat deep (greater than 2 inches) increases the risk of poor emergence and unacceptable stands.

By understanding the temperature sensitivity and coleoptile length of their selected wheat varieties, producers have one more tool to help them decide when to plant and how deep to promote better wheat stand establishment.&nbsp;

NEWTON, Kan. — Harvey County has selected Brad Jantz as its next county counselor. 

The county commission approved an agreement with Jantz at the commission's Sept. 24 meeting. 

Jantz fills the role previously held by Greg Nye, who served in that capacity for 18 years. We appreciate Nye's distinguished career helping our community.

The county counselor provides legal advice and expertise for a wide range of topics, including contracts, policy and regulations. Jantz carries nearly four decades of experience representing local governments.

Jantz serves as attorney for the cities of Burrton, Halstead and Sedgwick, among others, and as the counselor for Marion County since 2018. He has also served as a judge for various municipalities, and as a member of the Harvey County Indigent Defense Panel.

Jantz earned his juris doctor from the University of Kansas in 1985, where he also received a master's degree in business administration.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of 11th Avenue and North Main.

In 1900, Dr. George Von Leonrod moved to Hutchinson and opened the German Hospital at 417-423 N. Main St. He served the large immigration of Germans moving to the area.

By 1909, he had moved the hospital to 305 ½ N. Main St., upstairs in the Santa Fe block. Apparently very successful, he built an exquisite home at 1020 N. Main St. in 1910. The first photo shows that home at completion.

The second photo shows the interior dining room.

The home even had a central vacuum cleaning system in it. The third photo shows the interior parlor and staircase.

Dr. Von Leonrod died in 1951 and so did the hospital. The home was sold to Menzo Hainline in 1955 and he moved it to 8 Tomahawk in 1956.

The property was sold to the Valley Federal Savings &amp; Loan folks, who built a new office building there in 1957.

Hainline lived in the home until selling it to Dr. Jack and Donna Wortman in 1970.

Even though extensively remodeled outside, the home is still preserved inside the way it was built. The fourth photo shows the 1020 N. Main property today, with Peoples Bank as the main tenant, Shelter Insurance Office and the Landmark Architects as co-tenants. The property and building are owned by Peoples Bank and Trust Co. of McPherson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In 2024, the Opioid Settlement Funds Advisory Oversight Committee has awarded close to $100,000 in grant funding out of the nearly $300,000 that they have received for the two funds. The grant funding was awarded to Horizons Mental Health Center, United Way of Reno County, PrairieStar Health Center, and the Reno County District Attorney’s Office. Listed are the projects that received funding and their successful outcomes.&nbsp;

Project: Teen Intervene Early Education Prevention. Grant received $19,251.00 Horizons said that they reached approximately 165 youth who have stated that they have made efforts to manage peer pressure and to teach others in their families what they have learned. They also have utilized the “Teen Intervene” curriculum with youth that have come to Horizons on their own, seeking substance treatment. Horizons plans to continue to provide the early intervention curriculum in their substance treatment program to youth and parents as it is now a permanent service that they provide.&nbsp;

Project: Reno Connections, Kansas Certified Peer Mentor (KCPM). Grant received $25,000.00 Reno Connections has served 83 unduplicated members of the community. They have paid for 15 clients mental health/opioid treatment medications. Eight individuals have successfully obtained their state issued ID in which Reno Connections helped with the paperwork and purchasing. Additionally, two individuals were helped with obtaining their driver’s license, one of which is now employed as an over-the-road truck driver. Lastly, 15 birth certificates have been issued, because Reno Connections helped with the paperwork and paying for the cost.&nbsp;

Project: Medication Assisted Treatment program for Reno County. Grant received $25,000.00

The treatment program currently has 26 patients and six of them are new this year. The longer the patient stays in the program, the better the outcome. Through the combination of Suboxone, group therapy and individual therapy, patients are experiencing success and progressing toward long-term recovery.

Reno County District Attorney’s Office Project: District Attorney’s First-time Drug Felony Diversion Program. Grant received $25,000.00

As of June 28, 2024, there were twelve individuals actively participating in the Felony Diversion Program with an additional five approved and scheduled to sign in the next month. Two defendants are pending approvals for the program. Out of the twelve currently on Diversion, eleven of those involved are actively participating in the treatment program following the guidelines of the program. The District Attorney’s Office is seeing that these individuals are taking the opportunity to not only keep a serious charge from going on their record, but actively working to improve their life by working on their sobriety and coping mechanisms for issues that may cause them to want to use drugs or alcohol in the future. There are a few individuals who started working on their treatment and sobriety as soon as they were arrested and are working through the program with ease. A couple individuals had to be reminded of the possible outcomes if they failed the program and their diversion were to be revoked. Those individuals are now doing amazingly well.&nbsp;

The Opioid Settlement Funds Advisory Oversight Committee is again requesting proposals for grant funding from the Kansas Fights Addictions Fund.

To be eligible, proposals must come from organizations that are exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) and serve Reno County, Kansas. Special purpose units of government may apply for support of innovative projects. Community groups who do not have a 501(c)(3) status may apply for grant awards if another tax-exempt organization acts as a fiscal sponsor. Grant proposals from individuals or non-qualifying organizations will not be considered.&nbsp;

Proposals will be accepted between September 25 and November 8, 2024. County gives opioid grant results, seeks additional applicants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Heather Faulkner from the Reno County Child Care Task Force gave a brief update to the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday.

"We had projected to open eleven new facilities, which would result in 417 child care slots," Faulkner said. "Seven of those are up and running as we speak. We have two more that will be fully operational by the end of the year and then two more in 2025. We have had some additional costs in each of those partners. One of our locations was unable to go ahead and open. They are ready, but they hit some issues with fire code that changed back in 2006 that will result in $127,000 cost to that provider, to be able to increase their 58 slots. Even though we've hit some blocks, we've had some other real great successes. USD 312 was our first one to open last school year with 38 slots. They expanded this year with a partnership with Early Education Center, which services a lot of our special needs and disability children around the community. They have 125 slots now open in two locations now at Haven."

In addition to the larger facility slots, there has been a 20% increase in home care slots since the task force began its work.

"What we were able to do with our partnership with BowerComm is, you now can go to <a href="https://www.renocountychildcare.com/">renocountychildcare.com</a>, any parent, provider, business owner, or just community member can get, in real time, all of the providers," Faulkner said. "If you're looking for infant care, there's qualifiers, if you are looking for after school care. They've been a really great partnership to get people access to care as quickly as we possibly can."

There will be a slight change of time line for the start of the new umbrella organization for child care in the county.

"We told you the last time we were here, we were going to be up and operational," Faulkner said. Our target date was January 1, 2025. We have had to push that back to June 2025. There's still lots of work being done around that umbrella organization, we want to make sure we do it right and at the right dollar and price point."

The Reno County Child Care Task Force remains committed to building a future where every child has access to high-quality childcare, and every family has the support they need to thrive.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Janice Richardson with Splinters N-Rust posted on social media recently about a collaboration happening in Hutchinson.

"The Clayworks here in Hutchinson reached out to me back in June about collaborating on a special project between them and Hutchinson Regional Medical Center," Richardson said.&nbsp; "I have been hired part-time by Clayworks to help teach some of the talented clients from Hutchinson and McPherson (12) paintings for the new Pediatrics wing that will be opening later this year.  

"I worked for several weeks in July to design and prototype 12 paintings with a woodland animal theme and I have been teaching with the clients for a few weeks now.  This is a very exciting time to be involved with such a great organization and I am honored to have been asked to participate in such a special project as a local artist.  

"You will find me mornings Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday at the Clayworks!  Our paintings are coming along wonderfully and they are on display for all visitors to watch the progression as we work toward finishing them."

Hutch working together for hospital art

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Farmers' Market thanked Jason Probst this week for his recent donation to their 2025 music funding. Jason reached out to the market and wanted to make sure there was funding available for 2025 since we hold a special place in his family’s heart. 

“My son was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes in middle school," Probst said. "Our family was devastated, and we didn’t know what the future would look like. But for Mitchell it meant poking his fingers every couple hours to monitor his blood sugar, strictly managing his diet, and daily insulin injections.

Music became his outlet and his way of coping with all this change that had entered his life. He poured his energy into learning to play guitar, and the tragedy of diabetes was replaced with the dream of a life in music. 

"Playing on a Saturday morning at the Reno County Farmers' Market was his first significant paying gig - and it was a really big deal to a kid starting out in music. He played in front of a bigger audience, and that helped build his confidence and inspired him to keep practicing and keep playing. And, of course, his family was incredibly proud to see him playing in front of so many people. 

"Today, more than a decade later, music is still a big part of his life. He learned how to play bass, piano, and drums, and he’s played in a number of different bands at a number of different venues - including events in Hutchinson and at the Kansas State Fair, and it all began with a paying gig at the Farmers' Market when he was just a kid starting out. 

"When we remove the opportunity for our children to reach for and realize their dreams, we ensure the decline of our community. If we don’t provide the outlets for them to thrive, to hope, and to turn their passions into action, they’ll find a community that does.

"I want Hutchinson to be that community for our children, so I’m happy to do anything I can to ensure that we continue the tradition of paying musicians - and supporting their dreams - at the Reno County Farmers' Market.”
