HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair gets some help from state government, but not as much as you might think, according to Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz.

"The Kansas State Fair is a fee funded organization," Schulz said. "What that means is we are a state agency, but we receive $135,000 a year that goes into an account that is utilities only, so that's all it can be used for, and that doesn't even cover the fair. They used to give us a stipend every year, they went away from that. They said, what we'll do is we'll give you a percentage of the taxes that are collected on the grounds during the fair and off season for a sales tax. What we get is whatever's collected, uh, at the state fair, we get 5% of that that goes into our capital improvements fund. That's how we do upgrades to buildings. That's how we do upkeep on the grounds. Also when Senate bill two was put into play about three, two years ago, it stated in there that the revenue that was generated, the tax revenue that was generated there, 30% of it would go back to the state general fund, and 70% of that would go into the state fair's capital improvement fund there. Again, that money can only be used for improvements on the grounds that can't be used to pay salaries that can't be used to pay for anything else. Each one of them maybe generates between 275 to $350,000 a year."

That's one of the reasons why the 1861 Club is going to be such an important source of revenue for the Fairgrounds Foundation, is to be able to look out a little farther into the future for what's next for the fairgrounds.

"The whole mission behind the foundation is to give back to the state fair, so it's for improvement," Schulz said. "When we see a project that we need, we can go to the foundation and say, hey, we need some additional dollars to do this. That's where they will go out and do fundraising with us."

Starry, Starry Night Nov. 9

Our fall calving season has just wrapped up with another successful year that has now brought views of lively baby calves dotting our pasture.

Since our calving season usually falls within the same time as the start of our fall harvest, it is my responsibility to keep watch of the cattle in the pasture while my husband and father-in-law focus on harvest.

It’s a task I have enjoyed ever since I was a kid when I’d keep watch on my cows and anticipate the arrival of little ones. I remember the excitement of riding the bus home from school to see a new wobbly calf in the pasture or the pride I had when a friend and I would sit behind the fence and be able to quietly watch a live birth.

I still have that feeling of anticipation to this day when I go out into the pasture in the mornings to see if there’s new life. I also have that sense of pride as my son and I go out into the pasture and sit atop a hill looking over the cattle during our evening check knowing what I experienced and observed as a child is being passed down to my children.

I always hope for an uneventful calving season with mother cows not needing my assistance. Some years are better than others. This year none of the cows required my assistance, but it was definitely an eventful season, nonetheless.

My son’s first bottle calf, Sunflower, has become a great cow and has proven to be an excellent mother over the last three seasons of calving. This year, my son and I discovered Sunflower and her new handsome red bull calf while checking the cattle one evening.

She had already cleaned up that little bull calf and he had figured out how to walk without wobbling and was nursing by the time my son and I found them. As we sat and watched the pair for a while, we commented on how this cow was a phenomenal mama even though she had been an orphan.

The next morning I went out again to check cattle but couldn't find that little red bull calf anywhere. Instead, Sunflower was nursing another calf — a petite black heifer.

I was a bit perplexed and amazed at the same time that Sunflower would allow a different calf to nurse, but I chalked it up to her being such a good mother. I also told myself that she had hid her red bull calf so well hidden in the tall grass that I couldn’t find him, but I was sure I’d see him during my evening check.

But my son and I couldn’t find that little red calf during our evening check. And Sunflower still had that little black heifer right beside her. I began to realize what was happening. Sunflower had twins. Scenarios ran through my mind. Perhaps she had only claimed the little heifer. Perhaps she hid the red bull calf and forgot where she’d left him. Perhaps coyotes had found him. In any of those scenarios, the outcome for that little bull calf was not promising.

The next morning my son and I awoke early to again go to the pasture and try to find that little red bull calf with no luck. I took the kids to school and returned to the pasture with our dog in the hopes we could find that baby. 

The dog and I walked those 60 acres consisting of tall grass, thick timber and a creek bed. The dog sniffed out the little black heifer who’d been tucked into a tuft of grass, but we couldn’t find the red bull calf.

Two days later there was still no sign of that little guy. Four days later and I’d given up hope. 

Six days later, my husband and son went out during the evening check. I received a text from my husband telling me they’d found the missing red bull calf. I quickly called to see where they’d found him and to find out how badly decomposed he was.

“Oh, he’s alive,” my husband giggled. I couldn’t believe it! When I got home later that evening I went out into the pasture to discover Sunflower with her two strong and healthy calves nursing.

That old cow surely gave us all a story to remember for a very long time and proof, once again, that she is an excellent mother.

PARTRIDGE , Kan. — The National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children (NCMEC) is seeking the public’s assistance in locating missing teen, Tiara Lockhart.

Tiara, 15, went missing from Patridge, Kansas on September 11, 2024. 

Authorities believe that she may still be in the local area or travel to the Topeka, Kansas area. Tiara is described as 5'3", weighs 120 lbs., and has brown eyes with light brown hair.

Authorities still seeking missing teen

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As the Hutchinson City Council prepares to order the demolition of the Atrium Hotel on Tuesday, Mayor Greg Fast told Hutch Post his thoughts on the situation.

"We listened to a proposal two weeks ago," Fast said. "We listened, I just think there's probably no trust left with that situation. I want to speak for myself the other ones may disagree with me, but it just seems like you know, your word is not good. We don't know if it would ever get done unless we we pushed it or we would do it ourselves, the demo of the Atrium."

It's still up to owner Joshua Joseph to get the bond to have the building demolished.

&nbsp;"We will either do it ourselves or we will require a bond and we will see if that happens," Fast said. "If he comes to City Council with a bond and in a plan I think the bond would probably ensure success enough for me to go along with that and then we could we could let him move forward with the work that he should be doing."

The Hutchinson City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

Fast: Details still to be worked out on Atrium demo

KINGMAN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating three suspects on multiple allegations after a standoff at a home in Kingman.

Just after 2 p.m. on Sept. 23, police received a call reporting a stabbing in the 300 block of East D Avenue in Kingman, according to Police Chief David Lux.

Officers of the Kingman Police Department and Kingman County Sheriff’s Office pursued a suspect who fled to a residence in the 400 block of East B Avenue. Officers attempted to negotiate the suspects surrender while additional resources were contacted.

Resources and staff from the Kingman County Sheriff, Kansas Highway Patrol, Pratt County Sheriff, Edwards County Sheriff, and Kiowa County Sheriff were utilized in the incident and the suspect identified as 49-year-old Samuel Mitchell of Kingman eventually surrendered at the scene. 

&nbsp;Mitchell remains jailed on a $500,000 bond on requested charges that include Attempted murder in the 2nd degree, Aggravated battery and Interference with law enforcement, according to online jail records.

Two additional suspects identified according to online jail records as 42-year-old Dawn L. Barkley and 48-year-old Ricky Mitchell were arrested on requested charges of obstructing the apprehension of Mitchell. The stabbing victim was treated for his injuries.&nbsp;

Kingman stabbing suspect faces attempted murder charge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The motion to move forward with the demolition of the Atrium Hotel will come before the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday.

Despite pleas from the owner, Joshua Joseph for the ability to redo the building into storage and retail, it appears the council wants to go forward with the demolition, as they didn't believe he'd actually finish the project.

Also on the agenda for Tuesday is doing the official paperwork so City Manager Enrico Villegas can conduct banking business on the City's behalf, and designating a special event district for the Reno County vs. the World boxing event and the official swearing in of new City Clerk, Mary Rogers. In addition the city will finish up work on its contract with the IAFF.

Atrium demolition on council agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Animal Shelter announces its participation in BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Fall National Empty the Shelters™ reduced-fee adoption event, taking place from Oct. 1 through Oct. 16. 

This event aims to find loving homes for deserving pets by offering reduced adoption fees and promoting pet adoptions. As the nation’s largest funded adoption event, Empty the Shelters has helped nearly 283,000 pets find loving homes. 

During each nationwide event, BISSELL Pet Foundation sponsors reduced adoption fees of $50 or less to make adoption affordable for prospective pet owners.

During the event, all dog adoption fees will be $50 and all cat adoption fees will be $25.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Young Professionals of Reno County is hosting the 2nd annual BOOze Crawl on November 1. 

They have 10 downtown businesses lined up to be stops. Ticket holders will go from business to business, sampling Kansas local beer and wine, paired with appetizers. This is a fun Halloween event where they will have four costume contest categories to be judged at the final stop at Sandhills Brewery.&nbsp;

New this year is a Hutchinson Homebrewers component. The group of homebrewers drew random lottery ingredients for hops, yeast, specialty malts and add in ingredients and they will be serving samples of what their calling "Franken Brews". 

They are sure to be scary concoctions with ingredients such as bacon, sour gummy bears, fruity pebbles, sweet corn and more!&nbsp;This is a community event, open to the public aged 21+. No YP membership is required.&nbsp; There are non drinking tickets available.

Fall/winter hours at STRATACA starting Tuesday 

SALINA, Kan. — Come January, soybean farmers in Kansas can unite in a new way to recognize good news in agriculture. The inaugural Kansas Soybean Celebration debuts January 31 in Salina and invites growers to join for an evening of awards, camaraderie and celebratory remarks.

“We are starting a new tradition at Kansas Soybean with the creation of the Kansas Soybean Celebration,” event co-chair Brett Neibling, Highland, says. “We feel Celebration better serves farmers with a more central location while still providing top notch education and entertainment.”

Over four decades, soybean growers gathered in Topeka each January for the Kansas Soybean Expo. The KSA-led Expo, made possible by checkoff funding, set attendees up for a successful year through expert presentations in research, economics, weather and more. To modernize outreach efforts and strategically align grower events, association directors saw an opportunity to transition away from the Expo format and name.

“For years, the board discussed how to better serve our members and reach more growers,” Neibling, KSA First Vice President, says. “The Kansas Soybean Expo has been great for reaching members, but things run their course. We are excited about this new event.”

Kansas Soybean Celebration follows Kansas Commodity Classic at Salina’s Hilton Garden Inn. The KSA annual member meeting begins at 2:30 p.m. in the hotel dining area followed by a social hour and networking with corporate sponsors and agronomic researchers. Celebration begins at 4:30 p.m. and features numerous food stations and continued conversation. A program of awards, organizational updates and a featured speaker comprise the evening’s agenda.

The Kansas Soybean Expo historically recognized KSA’s Friend of Soy and Meritorious Service recipients, honored farmer-leaders retiring from service and announced results of the Kansas Soybean Yield and Value Contests. These awards are now slated for presentation at Celebration.

The Fair is going to continue with the same promoter they have used for some time.

"We're going to continue working with Romeo Entertainment Group out of Nashville," Schulz said. "They've been with us for many, many years. We put it up for an RFP. Just what they said that they could bring to the table was something that we wanted to continue with, and we saw that this last year."

Also, moving the stage farther from the main grandstand allowed for additional capacity.

"We were able to basically add up another thousand spaces for people to come and enjoy the concerts," Schulz said. "For the Riley Green concert, we actually were sitting right around that 990 spots down there. It was very comfortable still, but it gave that opportunity of being up and close with the artist. Then the stage up from that, our VIP deck, we had 20 tables of six that people could buy that included beverages and food, and then there was a standing room in there as well. Then you went up to the seated grandstand, and as that went for the Riley Green concert, that was fairly full up there as well."

With the new party pit area, a true sellout of the grandstand now would likely be able to break the 10,000 mark.

Concert attendance solid for State Fair

Kansas native Darrian Campbell joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school, spending four years on active duty, taking him to Okinawa, Japan, Cuba, and Operation Desert Storm in the Middle East.

He began his law enforcement career at the Reno County Sheriff Office in Feb of 1994.

After starting out in the jail for six months, he went to the Academy, into patrol deputy, and was promoted into serving many different positions over the years. During his law enforcement career, Darrian forged a parallel military career, continuing to serve in the Kansas National Guard.

Darrian was elected to complete the term of retiring sheriff Randy Henderson in October of 2019.

Settling into office, Sheriff Campbell worked with department leaders to recraft their mission statement to read: Our mission is to ensure the highest level of public safety while protecting the rights and dignity of those who serve, through community partnerships and unbiased enforcement of the law.

“Our vision is to strive to ensure the personal safety of every citizen by aligning our decisions, resources and community involvement with these values,” Campbell&nbsp;explains.

The commitment to better serve every citizen was particularly evident in Sheriff Campbell’s recent participation in an amateur boxing event organized to combat stigma&nbsp;and raise awareness of mental health issues.

Organized by Fight the Stigma Inc., a non-profit focused on raising awareness about&nbsp;mental health stigma, "Rumble in the Ring: We Are All Fighters" was held at Memorial Hall in Hutchinson, Kansas. The event featured several ‘box-a-buddy’ matches, 10 regular boxing matches, sumo wrestling and even a pillow fight, all for a meaningful cause—raising awareness and getting people the help they need.

Sheriff Campbell's involvement added an intriguing twist. It's not every day you see a sheriff lacing up the gloves!

“I hadn’t boxed before. I started training last November, and between my law enforcement career and my military commitment, it was a challenge to get it all scheduled in. But in 30 years of law enforcement, I’ve seen so many mental health concerns surface, people who need help, people who need advocates to stand by them to get them the help they need, we need to take this very seriously.”

“I’ve seen a lot of families break down over mental health struggles. And stigma—stigma is forming an ideation that says there is shame or guilt. We’ve got to rewrite that script; it is okay to ask for help, it’s a good thing to reach out for help, because help is out there. The Rumble in the Ring advertisements read ‘We’re all fighters in this cause.’ That’s the message: We have to stand together. You’re not alone in this.”

Fighters of all shapes and sizes rumbled for the cause. Some local celebrities laced ‘em up. Awareness was raised, and a great time was had by all!

So how did Sheriff Campbell do in his first boxing match? “I lost in three rounds. And I&nbsp;loved every minute of it!”

Coronado Heights run is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Kerpen with American Commitment notes that even though some measures are improving, the economy is still not as strong as it was a few years ago.

"The main reason that people are still experiencing the economy so negatively, of course, is that incomes have still not caught up to prices," Kerpen said. "We just had the 2023 income data come out, and there were a bunch of stories trying to sort of celebrate and say how wonderful it is that we had positive real income growth for that year. If you look at the real income data, we still haven't reached 2019. We're still below where we were before the lockdowns, about $600 below for the median household income."

People are used to rising incomes as they gain experience in their jobs. 

"They're used to being able to buy a little bit more each year than they were the year before," Kerpen said. "People don't feel that they're getting ahead economically. They feel that they're still behind. Other data bears this out. We've seen a big rise in consumer debt, credit card debt in particular, and we're seeing delinquencies rise now. We've got a situation where, you know, people get towards the end of the month and they either need to go without things they used to be able to afford, or they need to put them on a credit card and carry a balance."

Unemployment has been going up, though slowly.

"Traditionally, that's been one of the metrics that the Federal Reserve looks at indicating that a recession is coming, I think that's why they suddenly moved so aggressively to cut interest rates. It's not because they actually conquered inflation and it's all clear, and now they can ease up. It's because they think we're headed for a recession and they're trying desperately to avoid it. But those efforts usually fail, unfortunately."

Kerpen also said he's worried about the combination of recession and inflation, which is called stagflation and happened most notably back in the 1970s.

MCPHERSON, Kan. — PBT Bancshares, Inc., the holding company of Peoples Bank and Trust Company, and KANZA Financial Corporation, the holding company of KANZA Bank, have jointly announced Friday the signing of a stock purchase agreement whereby PBT Bancshares, Inc. will acquire KANZA Bank. Following the closing of the transaction, KANZA Bank will be merged with and into Peoples Bank and Trust Company with Peoples Bank and Trust Company as the surviving entity. The transaction has been approved by the board of directors of each company and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions including shareholder and regulatory approvals.

Based on the most recent reported financials, the combined institution is expected to have approximately $1.5 billion in total assets and 21 banking offices across central Kansas.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Union Pacific Railroad will be conducting essential maintenance work on the railroad crossing at E 30th Ave. To ensure the safety of both workers and the public, this crossing will be closed for a two-day period.

Closure Details:The closure will begin on October 1, 2024, at 8:00 AM and will end on October 2, 2024, at 4:00 PM. During this time, motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and plan for potential delays.

For westbound traffic, from E 30th Avenue, drivers should turn onto Lucille Drive, then onto E 43rd Avenue, and turn onto Halstead to return to 30th Avenue. Eastbound traffic should turn onto Halstead from E 30th Avenue, then onto E 43rd Avenue, and turn onto Lucille Drive to return to 30th Avenue. Please see the map of the detour route.
