HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, Hutchinson Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire in the 800 block of Cole Street.&nbsp;

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from a small residential structure. Crews quickly entered the home and discovered the source of the fire in the attic. The blaze was extinguished after firefighters found and addressed multiple hidden void spaces in the attic where the fire had spread.

Fortunately, the two occupants of the home were outside the residence when crews arrived. No injuries were reported, and thanks to a swift response, the fire was contained to the attic. However, the interior living space did suffer smoke damage.

The threat will continue Monday with more showers and storms on Monday with all threats of hail, strong winds and tornadoes possible during the afternoon and evening hours. &nbsp;

UPDATE:  Severe weather chances today, tomorrow

The Hutchinson Engineering Department is moving forward with a range of street, utility and infrastructure projects this spring, city officials said Friday.&nbsp;

The 2025 Arterial Street Project is currently out for bids, with bid opening scheduled for May 27. The work will include milling and overlaying East Third Avenue between Poplar and Plum streets, as well as Airport Road from Fourth Avenue to just north of 11th Avenue. On Lorraine Street, from Avenue B to Fourth Avenue, abandoned railroad tracks will be removed and new bike lanes installed. Repairs and an asphalt overlay are also planned for Avenue B between Washington and Walnut streets, excluding the Main Street intersection. New striping will follow.&nbsp;

In the city’s residential areas, Circle C Paving has completed crack sealing and will begin chip sealing on streets between Monroe and Lorraine, north of 30th Avenue, as part of the 2025 Residential Street Project.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Lift Station Rehabilitation Project is underway at two of five designated sites. CAS Constructors has begun work at lift stations located at East 11th Avenue in the Industrial Park and at Seventh Street and Porter. Additional sites include 19th Terrace, Regency Park and the Shears lift station.&nbsp;

Major progress continues on Phase Two of the Woodie Seat Freeway Project, which spans from the Avenue C bridge to Avenue A. Kansas Concrete has removed the Avenue A bridge and ramps. The contractor is also rebuilding the Avenue B bridge and constructing pavement, curbs, gutters, guardrails and a dirt embankment. A new roundabout is planned at Avenue A, and traffic signals at Avenue A and Adams Street will be upgraded with camera detection. &nbsp;

Work is nearing completion on the West 30th Avenue Reconstruction Project. Procon Construction is reconstructing the corridor between Main and Adams streets, including the intersection at 30th and Adams. A 10-foot trail is being added on the north side of the road. The project is expected to be completed late next week, or by the end of the month at the latest, officials said.&nbsp;

In the Plum Creek Subdivision, APAC Utilities Division is completing construction of a new lift station along East 43rd Avenue, west of Lorraine. Curb and gutter work is finished, and concrete work will be completed next week. Asphalt paving is scheduled for the last week of May.&nbsp;

Finally, the city will use in-house crews to perform ditch maintenance along the northwest relief ditch, from Monterrey Place to Dartmouth and Monroe. Mayor Goss noted that using city staff saves both time and money.&nbsp;

City gives update on engineering projects 

Three Hutchinson USD 308 schools will receive new flashing school zone signs this summer, part of a broader effort to improve student safety across the district, Mayor Stacy Goss announced via a Facebook post on Friday.

Hutchinson Middle School 7 on Avenue A, Hutchinson Middle School 8 on Adams Street, and Graber Elementary on 17th Avenue will be the first to receive the upgrades. The signs are set to be installed before students return to class in August.

The mayor also said Hutchinson High School is under consideration for a new school zone and pedestrian crosswalk on Severance Street, modeled after a similar setup near Hutchinson Community College on Plum Street.

The city plans to equip all USD 308 schools with flashing school zone signs over the next three years, installing signs at a rate of three schools per year.

“I commend our staff on their work on the subject, and I know this will make our students' travel safer,” Goss said in the post.

The improvements are part of ongoing efforts to enhance traffic safety around school campuses.

Kansans with deep agricultural roots have been tapped for influential roles within the U.S. Department of Agriculture under the Trump administration, reflecting a continued emphasis on experience and rural values in federal policymaking, according to Senator Roger Marshall.&nbsp;

Senator Marshall praised the administration’s decision to appoint individuals with strong ties to the land. “I was proud to nominate several people with rich, multi-generational agriculture backgrounds,” Marshall said, highlighting that many of his own former staff members still actively farm or ranch.

Among those appointees is Tucker Stewart, a fourth-generation rancher from Washington County who previously worked with the Kansas Livestock Association. Stewart now serves in a senior advisory role in the USDA, working closely with Secretary Brooke Rollins.

“He’s in her office every day. Whenever I’ve got a USDA question, he’s in there,” Marshall said. “They still run a very active ranch, and he goes back whenever he can to help, especially during their annual bull sale.”

Another Kansan, Ken Selzer, former state insurance commissioner, now holds a top position at the USDA's Risk Management Agency, which oversees crop insurance programs critical to farmers across the Midwest. “He’s doing his best to make sure they’re using sound policy,” said Marshall.&nbsp;

However, as rural areas watch these appointments with interest, some uncertainty looms over potential cutbacks at USDA field offices, particularly those in remote counties. The USDA is considering consolidations and staff reductions as part of a broader federal push to improve efficiency and reduce spending.

“I think the FSA [Farm Service Agency] offices are going to be okay, especially with improvements in technology,” Marshall said. “But we may lose some NRCS [Natural Resources Conservation Service] conservation personnel, especially given the Biden administration’s over-hiring.”

He criticized the federal government's ballooning deficit, pointing to a $2 trillion annual gap between revenue and spending. “The government needs to tighten its belt just like every farm family does,” he said.

He also placed blame for bureaucratic delays on a lack of in-person work in Washington. “Until recently, only 6% of USDA employees were physically in the office. That’s where the logjam has been — not in rural Kansas, but in D.C.”

Despite the uncertainty, Kansas agriculture leaders remain optimistic that their voices are being heard in Washington. “These appointments show we have people at the table who understand what it’s like to live with the policies we make.”

ELLSWORTH COUNTY, Kan. — An 18-year-old Lyons High School student was killed Thursday evening in a two-vehicle crash on K-156 Highway, approximately 3.4 miles northeast of Ellsworth.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7 p.m. near milepost 169. A 2011 Chrysler 200, driven by Nathaniel B. Dold, of Sterling, was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 2021 Peterbilt semi-truck hauling a cattle trailer.

Dold, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp;

The driver of the semi-truck, 58-year-old Noel J. Schilling of Morrill, was wearing a seat belt and sustained suspected minor injuries. He was transported to Ellsworth County Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Ellsworth Service Center. The crash remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

 He was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday evening. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Payne was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Payne was serving a 46-month sentence for a violation of the Kansas Offender Registration Act. He was listed as a registered offender since May of 2018 for convictions in Sedgwick County for aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He had a dozen convictions for violent crimes and drugs.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly has appointed Terry David to the Emergency Medical Services Board. The sweet smell of success filled the air Thursday evening &nbsp;as the community gathered for the annual Donut Eating Contest, which raised an impressive $4,904.01 to help send kids to camp and support Salvation Army programs.&nbsp;

Mayor Stacy Goss took home the top honor for Most Donuts Eaten, edging out the competition in a tie-breaking round to clinch the win. Goss's victory was just one of the many highlights in an event filled with community spirit and charitable giving.&nbsp;

Darrell Adams, representing the Downtown Hutchinson Kiwanis Club, earned the Raising Dough Award for collecting the most donations during the live event. Meanwhile, People’s Choice went to Micah and Jeff, who rallied the most online support ahead of the contest.&nbsp;

“We are blown away by the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone who came out to support this fun and meaningful event,” Maj. Paul James of the Salvation Army said. “These funds will make a big difference in the lives of local kids and families.”&nbsp;

Special thanks were given to this year’s sponsors, Hutchinson Daylight Donuts and Hutch Auto Body, whose contributions helped make the event possible.&nbsp;

With sugar-fueled smiles and a strong show of community support, the 2025 Donut Eating Contest was a resounding success.&nbsp;

Salvation Army raises $4,904.01 on Donut Day

The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1400 block of North Monroe just after 1 a.m. Friday. Crews arrived at approximately 1:21 a.m. to find flames engulfing a small single-story home, with heavy fire spreading from the front porch into the attic.

Firefighters launched an aggressive attack to contain the blaze, first focusing on the fire outside before moving indoors to extinguish it fully. During the operation, search crews located two residents who had managed to self-evacuate. Both were brought to safety.

The fire, which appears to have originated on the exterior of the home, remains under investigation with the cause still undetermined. One resident was evaluated by Reno County EMS for smoke inhalation and heat exposure. Additionally, one firefighter suffered a hand injury and was transported non-emergency to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Officials confirmed that the home was equipped with functioning smoke detectors, which may have played a crucial role in alerting the occupants in time.

Two escape Friday morning house fire

BUHLER, Kan. — For Jeff Comer, being honored as the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Teacher of the Month for May is more than an award, it’s a meaningful milestone in the place where his journey began. 

A 2000 graduate of Buhler High School, Comer now teaches in the same classrooms that once shaped his own education. &nbsp;

“As a teacher, it’s sometimes a thankless job,” Comer said. “To have just a little bit of recognition was amazing. That’s not why we teach, we do it for the kids, but it’s still very rewarding.”&nbsp;

Now finishing up his eighth year at his alma mater, Comer teaches civics, modern world history and recently added psychology to his course load at Buhler High School. He is currently facilitating Hutchinson Community College’s Psychology course for upperclassmen while working toward the graduate hours required to teach it independently in the future.

“Last year, an awesome teacher here—Tricia Unruh—retired, and she had taught psychology. I actually had her when I was a student,” Comer said. “That sparked my interest. I taught sociology in El Dorado and loved it, so when she retired, I decided to pick it up.”

Comer said he’s been inspired by the mental side of the subject, especially as it connects to sports and student wellness. He plans to spend the summer revamping the psychology curriculum and refining his overall classroom approach.

“I took a few courses on advanced educational psychology and it really changed my perspective on teaching,” he said.

Comer credits his time as a Buhler student for inspiring his path into education.&nbsp;

“At the time I was oblivious to the great mentoring I was receiving,” Comer said. “People like Brian Wilson, Dave Schroeder, Willie Adkins, Chuck Porter and Don Cameron, they all greatly impacted my life and helped lead me to where I am now. I remember leaving Mr. Wilson’s class thinking I wanted to be a teacher.”&nbsp;

He never expected to return to teach in the same halls where he once roamed as a student, but said the opportunity to come back home in 2017 was a blessing.&nbsp;

“When I interviewed with Principal Mike Ellegood, I realized nothing had really changed about Buhler, it’s still about building relationships and providing a great educational experience,” Comer said. “He embodies what Buhler Schools are all about.”&nbsp;

Comer, a 2004 graduate of Kansas State University, has also served as a high school and junior high football official for nearly two decades. He and his wife, Katie (Reade), a 1998 Buhler graduate, have raised their sons in the Buhler school system, continuing the family tradition.&nbsp;

“Both of my children have been and are being impacted by amazing educators and coaches with USD 313,” Comer said. “I really couldn’t imagine doing any other job. I feel God has guided me to be an educator. Through my experiences at Buhler Schools. I hope I can have even half the impact on my students that my teachers had on me.”&nbsp;

Looking ahead, Comer is eager to grow in his new role teaching psychology. He said the transition has rekindled his passion for the classroom.&nbsp;

“I’m spending this summer revamping the psychology curriculum and all my classes, really,” he said. “I’m going to work until the day I stop improving. That’s how I’ll know when it’s time to move on, when I feel like I can’t get better.”&nbsp;

Comer is finishing up his 20th year teaching, a career which began in 2005 at Marysville Jr./Sr., followed by El Dorado High School in 2006, Newton High School in 2010, before returning to Buhler in 2017.&nbsp;

Comer was nominated by BHS staff member, John Clark: "Mr. Comer builds excellent rapport with all of his students. He utilizes inquiry-based instruction in his social studies classes. He allows his students to guide their learning to provide buy-in which engages them in topics about our society. He encourages his students to learn from our history and to make a difference in their future. I have witnessed his students give presentations to the class and I'm amazed at how much they are learning and can communicate about different topics about our history &amp; world!”

A 2000 graduate of Buhler High School, Comer now teaches in the same classrooms that once shaped his own education. &nbsp;“As a teacher, it’s sometimes a thankless job,” Comer said. “To have just a little bit of recognition was amazing. That’s not why we teach, we do it for the kids, but it’s still very rewarding.”&nbsp;Now finishing up his eighth year at his alma mater, Comer teaches civics, modern world history and recently added psychology to his course load at Buhler High School. He is currently facilitating Hutchinson Community College’s Psychology course for upperclassmen while working toward the graduate hours required to teach it independently in the future.“Last year, an awesome teacher here—Tricia Unruh—retired, and she had taught psychology. I actually had her when I was a student,” Comer said. “That sparked my interest. I taught sociology in El Dorado and loved it, so when she retired, I decided to pick it up.”Comer said he’s been inspired by the mental side of the subject, especially as it connects to sports and student wellness. He plans to spend the summer revamping the psychology curriculum and refining his overall classroom approach.“I took a few courses on advanced educational psychology and it really changed my perspective on teaching,” he said.<figure>

 </figure>Comer credits his time as a Buhler student for inspiring his path into education.&nbsp;“At the time I was oblivious to the great mentoring I was receiving,” Comer said. “People like Brian Wilson, Dave Schroeder, Willie Adkins, Chuck Porter and Don Cameron, they all greatly impacted my life and helped lead me to where I am now. I remember leaving Mr. Wilson’s class thinking I wanted to be a teacher.”&nbsp;He never expected to return to teach in the same halls where he once roamed as a student, but said the opportunity to come back home in 2017 was a blessing.&nbsp;“When I interviewed with Principal Mike Ellegood, I realized nothing had really changed about Buhler, it’s still about building relationships and providing a great educational experience,” Comer said. “He embodies what Buhler Schools are all about.”&nbsp;Comer, a 2004 graduate of Kansas State University, has also served as a high school and junior high football official for nearly two decades. He and his wife, Katie (Reade), a 1998 Buhler graduate, have raised their sons in the Buhler school system, continuing the family tradition.&nbsp;“Both of my children have been and are being impacted by amazing educators and coaches with USD 313,” Comer said. “I really couldn’t imagine doing any other job. I feel God has guided me to be an educator. Through my experiences at Buhler Schools. I hope I can have even half the impact on my students that my teachers had on me.”&nbsp;Looking ahead, Comer is eager to grow in his new role teaching psychology. He said the transition has rekindled his passion for the classroom.&nbsp;“I’m spending this summer revamping the psychology curriculum and all my classes, really,” he said. “I’m going to work until the day I stop improving. That’s how I’ll know when it’s time to move on, when I feel like I can’t get better.”&nbsp;Comer is finishing up his 20th year teaching, a career which began in 2005 at Marysville Jr./Sr., followed by El Dorado High School in 2006, Newton High School in 2010, before returning to Buhler in 2017.&nbsp;Comer was nominated by BHS staff member, John Clark: "Mr. Comer builds excellent rapport with all of his students. He utilizes inquiry-based instruction in his social studies classes. He allows his students to guide their learning to provide buy-in which engages them in topics about our society. He encourages his students to learn from our history and to make a difference in their future. Buhler's Jeff Comer returns to roots, earns Teacher of the Month honor

Hourly workers could soon see a boost in take-home pay if legislation introduced by Republican lawmakers, with backing from President Donald Trump, becomes law. The bill would exempt the first $10,000 of annual overtime pay from federal income taxes.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., a key proponent of the legislation, said the measure is part of a broader push to support blue-collar workers — a demographic he and President Trump say has been left behind by past administrations.

“This is one of President Trump’s promises,” Marshall said during a recent interview. “He asked me to lead on this because he knows I come from a hard-working family. We’re introducing legislation that would make the first $10,000 of overtime completely tax-free. It’s time we reward the people who are literally building America.”

The proposal is aimed at wage and hour workers, from manufacturing employees at Spirit AeroSystems to oil refinery operators and pipeline crews. Marshall said the plan would primarily benefit those earning time-and-a-half pay, allowing them to keep more of their earnings rather than lose a chunk to federal taxes.

“If you’re putting in those extra hours, we think you should get to keep that money,” he said. “It could be worth $2,000 for an individual or up to $4,000 for a family. That’s significant.”

Marshall also linked the legislation to workforce challenges in Kansas and across the country, saying the measure could help alleviate ongoing labor shortages in sectors such as aerospace, agriculture, and manufacturing.

“We don’t have enough people to fill the jobs we have,” he said. “If someone’s willing to put in 50 or 60 hours a week to help drive our economy, we need to recognize and reward that.”

Marshall painted an optimistic picture of the country’s direction under the presidents influence, citing low unemployment, rising stock markets, falling gas prices, and improved border enforcement.

“I’m so bullish on America right now,” he said. “Jobs are coming back. Families are safer. We’re rolling back regulations. We’re putting America first.”

Still, Marshall remains confident that the bill speaks directly to the needs of the American worker.

“It’s about fairness and letting people keep what they earn,” he said. “That’s what this is all about.”

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 7p.m. Thursday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chrysler 200 driven by Nathaniel B.&nbsp;Dold, 18, Sterling, was eastbound on Kansas 156 approximately three mile northeast of Ellsworth.&nbsp; The car crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2021 Peterbilt semi driven by Noel J.&nbsp;Schilling, 58, Morrill.

Dold was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Parsons Funeral Home. EMS transported&nbsp;Schilling to the Ellsworth County Hospital. Dold was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas teen dies after crash with a semi

On May 8, 2025, the City of Hutchinson hosted a community engagement meeting to&nbsp;gather public input on the future of Memorial Hall. More than 200 residents attended the come-and-go event held at Memorial Hall, where they participated in an interactive series of feedback stations. The purpose of the meeting was to hear directly from the community regarding four primary options under consideration: 

1. Sell or lease the building to a private developer for adaptive reuse 

2. Demolish the building and transform the site into a public green space 

3. Maintain the building as is without major investments 

Community feedback strongly favored preserving Memorial Hall and investing in phased&nbsp;upgrades. Residents expressed deep attachment to the building’s historical and cultural value and proposed dozens of creative ideas for increasing usage and long-term sustainability. This report captures the collective voice of the public and will help guide City Council’s next steps. Holdout is Emporia State University, which proposes no increase in tuition

TOPEKA — Administrators of public universities in the Kansas Board of Regents system proposed student tuition increases for undergraduate resident students in the upcoming academic year ranging from 2.5% at Pittsburg State University to 4% at Fort Hays State University.

The outlier was Emporia State University, which responded to steady enrollment declines by requesting no increase in tuition for the second consecutive year.

To varying degrees, the six Board of Regents universities in Kansas grapple with a decline in the college-age population, an ongoing crash in international student enrollment, flat state appropriations, instability in federal research spending as well as inflation in operational costs, pressure to raise employee compensation and demands for substantive direct support of college athletics.

The nine-member Board of Regents has authority over tuition adjustments, but typically recommendations from campus leadership have been adopted.

Here are tuition rate increases proposed by university officials for in-state undergraduate students in the 2025-2026 academic year: University of Kansas, 3%; Kansas State University and Wichita State University, 3.5%; Pittsburg State University, 2.5%; and Fort Hays State University, 4%.

On Wednesday, FHSU President Tisa Mason said during a presentation to the Board of Regents the 4% hike at FHSU would balance financial responsibilities of the university with the capacity of students to afford college.

“We believe that the proposed tuition increase is essential for maintaining our high quality education and our student support services,” she said.

Board member Jon Rolph of Wichita asked whether Mason should consider a more aggressive tuition increase. FHSU historically maintained the state system’s lowest tuition rate due to revenue received from offering instruction to students in China, but the university found it necessary to raise undergraduate tuition by 7% in 2024 and 6% in 2025.

“Our students would loudly say, ‘No,'” Mason told Rolph. “They are feeling these increases right now.”

Ken Hush, president of Emporia State University, defended the decision to request no tuition increase. It meant ESU would go without a tuition rate hike in five of the past seven years. The university projected it would collect 0.4% less revenue from tuition next academic year compared to the current year, a reflection of erosion in enrollment as ESU restructured the university by firing tenured professors and eliminating academic programs.

Since 2016, tuition revenue to ESU has fallen by 26% while the six-university system overall generated an additional $140 million from tuition during that period.

“We are recommending a zero percent increase for the second year in a row,” said Hush, who indicated ESU’s budget factored in a possible 3% enrollment decline in the upcoming year.

Rolph, however, reiterated that he was concerned adopting less-than-necessary tuition increases at this juncture could lead to substantial spikes in the future to fill revenue gaps.

“Do you have that mapped out over two, three, four years where it’s stair-stepped?” Rolph said.

Hush said ESU was proud to offer a high-quality education with a tuition rate that moderated financial barriers faced by students.

“Our goal is to keep it flat from here on out,” Hush said. “We believe its moving in the right direction.”

Rick Muma, president at Wichita State University, said the 3.5% surge in tuition recommended to the Board of Regents reflected an attempt to navigate a difficult financial landscape. He pointed to leveling of investment from the state, uncertainty regarding federal appropriations, employee compensation that was 16% below market rates, the need to allocate $3.5 million to athletics programs and the anticipated reduction in international student enrollment.

“We are seeing the effects of decreased enrollment among international students,” he said. “This just didn’t start this year. It’s significant for us.”

Muma said the tuition increase could net WSU about $3.4 million annually, but the decline in international students could reduce revenue by $5.5 million annually. He said the university planned to implement a 4.8% budget reduction.

Kansas State President Richard Linton said tuition for in-state undergraduates would climb by 3.5%, but a 2.5% tuition increase would be applied to veterinary medicine students and an 8% increase would be sought for students on the aviation campus in Salina.

He expected KSU enrollment to climb 2% in the upcoming year, which would be a second consecutive year of growth following nine years of decline.

“The goal is to be working as hard as we can from a student-affordability standpoint,” Linton said.

KU Chancellor Doug Girod said the plan was to raise undergraduate tuition by 3% and boost student fees by 2%. These adjustments were in reaction to a projected 2.4% inflation rate, challenges with faculty salary compression, the flat state budget, reinvention of federal research funding and arrival of the long-anticipated enrollment decline tied to U.S. population trends. He expected KU also would experience a reduction among international students.

He said financial ramifications of these forces on higher education were difficult to fully predict, especially in terms of what could happen to student enrollment.

“I think the next two years are going to answer that question for all of us,” he said.

Tuition at the six universities in the Board of Regents’ system didn’t rise in 2020 and in 2023. In 2022, only KSU raised tuition. KU didn’t adopt a tuition increase from 2020 through 2023 before embracing increases of 5% in 2024 and 3.5% in the current academic year.

Five of six state universities in Kansas seek tuition hikes to grapple with financial obstacles

Warm temperature dominated the High Plains this week, with departures ranging up to 20 degrees above normal, especially along the northern portions of the region, while cooler-than-normal temperatures were observed along the southern border.&nbsp;

Precipitation fell across the western and southern portions of the region this week; however, in most areas, amounts were insufficient for significant improvement. Beneficial heavy precipitation (1 to 3 inches) in eastern Colorado and Kansas led to improvements in moderate to severe drought and abnormal dryness in these areas. &nbsp;

Conversely, dry conditions resulted in the introduction and expansion of drought. Extreme drought was introduced in western Nebraska, and moderate to extreme drought expanded in western Colorado and eastern Nebraska.&nbsp;

Abnormal dryness also expanded in southern Wyoming this week.&nbsp;

 </figure>Warm temperature dominated the High Plains this week, with departures ranging up to 20 degrees above normal, especially along the northern portions of the region, while cooler-than-normal temperatures were observed along the southern border.&nbsp;Precipitation fell across the western and southern portions of the region this week; however, in most areas, amounts were insufficient for significant improvement. Beneficial heavy precipitation (1 to 3 inches) in eastern Colorado and Kansas led to improvements in moderate to severe drought and abnormal dryness in these areas. &nbsp;<figure>

Drought Monitor:  Warmer temperatures and little precipitation lead to little change 

Senator Roger Marshall said Thursday morning that Kansas agriculture is beginning to rebound, as trade agreements and ethanol expansion offer new opportunities for farmers across the state.

On the BW Morning Show, Marshall expressed optimism about recent developments on the trade front and praised the Trump administration’s tariff strategy as a long-term investment in American manufacturing and farming.

“This is my favorite time of year,” Marshall said. “The turkeys are gobbling, the fish are biting, and the grass is green.”

Marshall, who has spent the past month touring Kansas and visiting more than 40 counties, said he’s seeing positive signs in both the fields and the factories. “Dozens of manufacturing plants across the state have seen sales spike,” he said, attributing the growth to the use of American-made aluminum and steel. “People want the stability of knowing what they’re ordering today won’t be affected by tariffs six months from now.”

On the issue of international trade, Marshall pointed to a new agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom as a win for Kansas agriculture.

“This is the first of many,” he said, noting over 80 countries are interested in pursuing trade deals. “This opens the door for beef and ethanol exports — two of the brightest spots in Kansas ag right now.”

Marshall emphasized that removing non-tariff barriers in Europe would allow Kansas-grown beef and corn-based ethanol to enter new markets. He also advocated for expanded production of ethanol and renewable fuels made from soybeans, particularly jet fuel.

“We’re pushing for year-round E15 sales and a long-term extension of the 45Z tax credit,” he said. “Those moves would be game-changers for corn and soybean producers.”

The senator also addressed the challenges farmers have faced under the Biden administration, citing a sharp drop in net farm income and rising interest rates.

“Fertilizer, diesel — those input costs skyrocketed,” he said. “But we’re starting to see interest rates and input prices come down. I think we’re going to be in better shape this year than we were last year.”

He recalled attending the signing of a beef trade agreement during the Trump administration — the only member of Congress invited by the president.“Nobody in the world can make beef that tastes as good as Kansas beef,” Marshall said. “Once people taste it, they want more.”He also pointed to growing ties between Kansas and Japan in aerospace, including partnerships in satellite and chip production. “Japan continues to be a strong ally — not just in trade, but in keeping pressure on China,” he said.As he continues his tour of Kansas, Marshall said he remains committed to advocating for stable, long-term solutions for farmers and manufacturers alike.“Everybody, take a deep breath,” he said. “Let’s come back in two months and see where we are. I think we’re going to be in a better place.”
