PRATT COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Sunday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Toyota 4Runner driven by Lauren Nicole Marshall, 33, Minneola, was westbound on&nbsp;U.S. 54 just west of southwest 19th Avenue. The driver attempted to make a U-turn in a no passing zone.

An eastbound NV3500 Bus driven by David Wayne Barker, 45, Burlison, Tennessee, struck the passenger side of the Toyota.

EMS transported one passenger on the bus identified as Courtney Layne Barker, 43, Burlison, Tennessee, to Pratt Regional Medial Center. The drivers, a 4-year-old in the Toyota and three small children on the bus were not injured. All seven were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

While every business is different, it is also true that every business is the same. That is, every business owner needs to look at the distant horizon, questioning basic assumptions about the business, assessing the talents and wishes of family members who may someday become owners, and innovating in ways that keep the company at the top of its game in order to maximize value. All of this takes time and careful planning, preferably with the help of trusted advisors along the way.&nbsp;

Business owners and family farm owners who follow certain steps in planning for exit are more likely to reach the goals they set for a successful transition.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When it comes to setting goals for a business transition, your first thought may be,&nbsp;“Well, my goal is to sell the business.”&nbsp;But there’s so much more to think about.&nbsp;

My last Easter egg hunt 

Ten years ago, Floyd Bledsoe walked free after spending more than 16 years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. Today, he’s a father of three, an entrepreneur, and the owner of a small farm just outside Hutchinson.

On a chilly November afternoon in 1999, 14-year-old Zetta Camille Arfmann stepped off a school bus in the small town of Oskaloosa and walked into the trailer home she shared with her older sister, brother-in-law, and their two children. She was never seen alive again.

Just days later, Floyd Bledsoe—her sister’s 23-year-old husband—was arrested and charged with Camille’s murder. Despite maintaining his innocence, Bledsoe was convicted in April 2000 of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 16 years.

In 2004, the Kansas Supreme Court upheld Bledsoe’s conviction. But questions surrounding the handling of the case persisted, particularly over a pretrial agreement signed by the prosecutor, the county sheriff, and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) agent to not conduct DNA testing on the evidence.

Bledsoe’s legal team secured permission to test the preserved biological evidence. The results were staggering. DNA from a vaginal swab taken from Camille’s body matched Bledsoe’s brother, Tom Bledsoe—not Floyd. Floyd’s DNA was not found on any of the tested evidence. Additional DNA evidence, including samples found on Camille’s socks, implicated Tom and the brothers’ father in the disposal of the body.

As the case unraveled, Tom Bledsoe died by suicide on November 9, 2015, in Bonner Springs. He left behind handwritten confessions, including a note addressed to his parents in which he admitted to raping and killing Camille and implored them to "please tell Floyd I am sorry."

One month later, on December 8, 2015, Judge Gary Nafziger vacated Floyd Bledsoe’s convictions. Prosecutors dropped all charges, and Bledsoe walked free after spending nearly half his life imprisoned for a crime he did not commit.

Since his 2015 exoneration, Bledsoe has settled in Hutchinson and started four businesses. Among them is F-N-J Construction, a home remodeling and decking company, and Bledsoe Serenity Homestead, a working farm where he sells fresh produce and teaches others how to grow their own food. 

The journey from prison to purpose hasn’t been easy. 

“It takes a toll — mentally, emotionally. It just drains you,” Bledsoe said of his wrongful incarceration. “But it’s also made me who I am today. I went in at 23 and came out at 39. It taught me what true family really is — and sometimes, that’s not the one you’re born into, but the people who choose to walk alongside you.” 

Now a father to three young children, Bledsoe’s focus is on creating meaningful experiences — both for his family and the broader community. 

That mission comes to life at the Serenity Homestead, where children can interact with animals, ride horses, and experience hands-on farming. 

“One of my goals is to teach people how to become self-sustaining,” he said. “You don’t have to rely on the grocery store if you know how to grow your own food.” 

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Bledsoe said. “I’ve learned a lot of stuff, gained a lot of great friends, and built a completely different life.”

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an aggravated battery case after a public works employee was intentionally struck by a vehicle Wednesday.

Authorities say the suspect was driving a silver or gray newer model Nissan Frontier with a handicap placard hanging from the rearview mirror. The driver is described as a white male, approximately 65 years old, with gray hair.

The incident occurred while the public works employee was working on or near the roadway. The sheriff’s office is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect or locating the vehicle.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Reno County Sheriff’s Office at 620-694-2735 or Crime Stoppers of Reno County at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Officials are also reminding drivers to stay alert and cautious around highway and road workers. Summer program, opening the doors to our state’s zoos, museums, nature centers,
and historical sites to Kansas families — for free! Designed to help young
Kansans explore and fall in love with their home state, the program has quickly
proven to be much more than a feel-good initiative.

It’s a smart investment in our children’s
learning and our state’s economic vitality.

Over the past four years, the program has
grown dramatically. In 2024, it offered free access to more than 200
attractions across Kansas. Over 154,000 families participated — and nearly
500,000 tickets were redeemed, a 55% increase over the previous year — bringing
families into local communities, supporting tourism, and enriching the summer
experiences of thousands of children. 

In fact, 76% of participating families
purchased meals, 72% shopped at local stores, and 20% stayed overnight,
underscoring the program’s significant contribution to local economies across
the state. Every dollar spent on Sunflower Summer returns multiple dollars to
local communities, from ticket-adjacent spending at restaurants to increased
visibility for small attractions.

In Abilene alone, the <a href="https://abilenekansas.org/blog/2024/10/30/sunflower-summer-program-shines-in-abilene">2024 Sunflower Summer program generated</a> the
equivalent of $114,945 in ticket revenue for the Abilene and Smoky Valley
Railroad, $34,395 for the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, and
$10,176 for the Dickinson County Heritage Center — providing a substantial
boost to the city’s cultural and historical attractions.

The impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. In April,
the Sunflower Summer program was named the Best Local Impact Campaign at the
2025 eTourism Summit’s eTSY Awards — national recognition for a uniquely Kansas
initiative. As Kansas Tourism’s Director, Bridgette Jobe notes, no other state
offers a program quite like it.

Yet despite its growing popularity,
proven success, and bipartisan support, Sunflower Summer saw its funding
significantly reduced during this year’s legislative session. As a result, the
2025 program will run for just three weeks — from July 12 to August 3 — down
from a full summer season. That timeline may be cut even shorter, depending on
participation and amount of use.

This is not just a scheduling change.
It’s a step backward for a program that brings real returns for students, for
families, and for local economies across the state.

Cuts to Sunflower Summer come at a time

being reduced. These losses compound one another, with real and lasting
consequences for K-12 students, especially those from low-income families. <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/education-news/articles/2018-06-07/summer-exacerbates-the-divide-between-rich-and-poor-students#:~:text=Well-off%20students%20often%20retain,one%20John%20Hopkins%20study%20found.">Research consistently shows</a> that summer
educational programs help narrow the reading achievement gap by keeping
students engaged and learning when school is out. Without them, many children
risk falling further behind.

The Sunflower Summer program is a
powerful example of the kind of initiative Kansas should champion — one that
reflects our values, strengthens our communities, and demonstrates what it
looks like to put our money where our mouths are. 

For a fraction of the state’s budget,
Sunflower Summer delivers outsized returns. When we invest in programs like
this we’re putting resources behind our priorities. We’re not just funding
summer activities, we’re investing in Kansas, in our kids’ educational
enrichment, and local economic opportunity.

If we want to continue building a Kansas
where families thrive and kids grow up proud of where they’re from, we need to
fight for programs like this. The legislature should restore full funding to
Sunflower Summer and Kansans should make sure lawmakers know how much it
matters.

Insight: Sunflower Summer builds more than memories 

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center will mark its 50th anniversary with a free, family-friendly community celebration on Saturday, June 7, from 3 to 10 p.m., at the hospital campus.

The “Heart of Hutch” event is HRMC’s way of thanking the Hutchinson community for five decades of support and honoring more than 800 staff members who help power the regional healthcare system.

“A little over 50 years ago, the community came together to do something revolutionary, in combining two hospitals into one,” said Benjamin Anderson, president and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. “This event is celebrating those efforts and the decades of support and investment that has followed.”

The celebration will feature activities for all ages, including a Touch-A-Truck exhibit, rock wall climbing, Hedrick’s Petting Zoo, food trucks, bouncy houses, and more. Live entertainment and music performances will take place throughout the evening.

Hutchinson Regional to host Heart of Hutch Celebration 

 A beloved South Hutchinson tradition returns this weekend, as Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish prepares to host its 80th annual Fiesta, a three-day cultural celebration filled with food, music, games, and community spirit.

The festivities begin Friday, June 6, and run through Sunday, June 8. What began as a modest ice cream social decades ago has grown into the parish’s largest fundraiser and a hallmark event for the region's Hispanic community.

“We’re not exactly sure which year it started, but it’s been going on for about 80 years,” said Father Eric Weldon, pastor of the parish. “It started small—just some food and music—and now it’s a major event for the community and the church.”

Friday night kicks off with a steak dinner for the first 100 guests—first come, first served price is $20.00 —followed by a beer garden, live music, and a poker tournament. The evening’s entertainment includes classic American rock performed by VIERA Corel and the Brown family, while the Dinky Diner will serve its well-known burgers.

“There’s going to be poker at 7 p.m. and plenty of food and music to enjoy all evening,” Weldon said. “It’s a full slate.”

Saturday’s events begin at 4 p.m., timed to avoid the heat. Mexican food vendors will line the parish grounds, and local group Los Secretos will perform traditional Mexican music until dusk. A professional fireworks show by Kapow Fireworks is set to light up the night sky around 9:30 p.m.

Sunday’s programming includes a regular Mass schedule at 9 a.m. and noon, with Fiesta events starting at 11 a.m. Attendees can enjoy performances by folklorico dance groups from Wichita and Hutchinson, along with vocal performances by Jasmine, a young singer returning after a popular debut last year.

Traditional Mexican foods will be served throughout the weekend, including street tacos al pastor, carne asada, aguas frescas, and Micheladas.

“This is the biggest fundraiser for the parish,” Weldon said. “The proceeds go directly toward the operation of the church, which supports between 350 and 425 families.”

The Fiesta also celebrates the deep cultural roots of the Hispanic community in South Hutchinson, a legacy dating back to the 1920s and ’30s. Baseball leagues, fast-pitch softball, and cultural traditions have helped shape the identity of this vibrant parish, established in 1927.

“This is more than a fundraiser,” said Weldon. “It’s a celebration of faith, family, and tradition—something that brings everyone together.”

RAWLINS COUNTY —A Kansas couple were injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Friday in Rawlins County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Philip Cole, 54, Granby, Montana, was eastbound on U.S. 36. approximately eight miles east of Kansas 161.&nbsp; The pickup lost a front tire from a trailer and struck westbound bicycles ridden by 75-year-old Wayne Akers and 75-year-old Barbara Akers both of Marion.

EMS transported the Akers to the Rawlins County Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Cole was properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP.

Gas prices on cruise control to begin June 

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; — A Hutchinson man was arrested Thursday after a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex ended in a violent altercation, police said.

Officers with the Hutchinson Police Department responded to a call just before midnight on June 5 at the Clusters Apartments, 1401 E 23rd Ave. When officers arrived, they found a man outside an apartment suffering from a hand injury. A second male involved in the incident had fled but was apprehended nearby.

Investigators determined that a physical altercation had taken place between the two men. The victim was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and later interviewed by detectives.

Albert Hon Jr., 36, of Hutchinson, was arrested in connection with the incident. He faces multiple charges including Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery – Domestic Violence (Strangulation), Domestic Battery, and Criminal Restraint.

Police are encouraging anyone with information related to the case to contact the Hutchinson Police Department at 620-694-2816, their local law enforcement agency, or Crime Stoppers of Reno County at 800-222-TIPS. The Greater Hutch Economic Development Partnership, housed within the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, has announced the launch of a new strategic planning process aimed at shaping Reno County’s economic future for the next five years.

The initiative, developed in partnership with Aha! Strategy + Facilitation and led by strategist Amy Holloway, will unfold in multiple phases through October 2025. A community advisory group of local leaders selected Aha! and will remain involved throughout the planning process.

Following an in-depth benchmarking analysis of comparable communities, Greater Hutch is now seeking broad community participation. A public survey went live Wednesday, June 4, and residents are encouraged to provide feedback and share the survey widely.

In addition to the survey, a series of 12 focus groups will be held from Tuesday, June 17, through Thursday, June 19, in Hutchinson and South Hutchinson. Two public presentations are scheduled at local government meetings: Hutchinson City Council on June 17 at 5:30 p.m., and the Reno County Commission on June 18 at 9:45 a.m. A public forum will also be held at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, June 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Beginning June 13, the advisory group will meet biweekly to review findings and help form the strategic vision. Presentations about the plan will also be shared at civic group meetings and city councils across the county.&nbsp;

The planning effort is funded by the Hutchinson Community Foundation, City of Hutchinson, City of South Hutchinson, Reno County, Greater Hutch Economic Development, and StartUp Hutch.

Organizers say the process will result in a shared vision and actionable goals to elevate economic growth and opportunity in Reno County.

“We are energized to engage our community to work together through this process,” the Greater Hutch team said in a statement, “and implement the resulting resource to elevate Reno County.”

Chamber launches countywide economic development planning process 

A statewide micro-internship program is opening new doors for Kansas businesses to connect with college talent, thanks to a unique initiative supported by the Kansas Board of Regents and Department of Commerce.

Rick Kraus, Career Services Coordinator at Hutchinson Community College, joined BW's morning radio show this week to talk about how micro-internships are reshaping work-based learning across the state.

Unlike traditional internships or apprenticeships, micro-internships are short-term, project-based opportunities that typically last between 20 and 25 hours. These internships are often remote, and students are paid upon completing a specific assignment for the business, nonprofit or entrepreneur that hires them.

“This is a great way for employers to get valuable work done while helping students build their resumes,” Kraus said. “And with grant funding covering the first five projects, there’s no cost to the employer to get started.”

The program, launched in 2021, is part of the Kansas Board of Regents’ “Building a Future” strategic plan. It partners with national micro-internship platform Parker Dewey to match employers with students from Kansas public colleges and universities.

Eligible businesses must operate within state lines. While students from any public Kansas institution can apply for internships, employers have the option to restrict applications to a specific school — such as Hutchinson Community College.

“Say you’re a business in Hutch and you want a marketing intern from K-State — you can do that,” Krause explained. “But if you want to give the opportunity to a local Hutch CC student, you can set that preference when you post the job.”

After the initial five free projects, employers can continue using the platform at a cost of $500 per project. Of that, $450 goes directly to the student, and the remaining $50 supports administrative fees paid to Parker Dewey, the company that manages micro-internships nationwide.&nbsp;

Kraus emphasized that most micro-internships are flexible and remote, allowing students to work on their own schedule — even late at night or around class and sports commitments. Projects can range from data entry and social media planning to research and content development.
