Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of East Sherman on the south side.

Before automobiles arrived in Hutchinson, this block of businesses was all liveries or blacksmiths. The building at 109-111 E. Sherman St. was built in 1900 as the Hoopes &amp; Hickman Blacksmith Shop.

In 1904, it was the W.B. Hickman &amp; Co. Blacksmiths and, in 1909, it was the Hains &amp; Martin Blacksmiths.

By 1910, this block became motor row for Hutch.

In 1913, 109 E. Sherman St. was the Hutchinson Motor Car Co. owned by Elmer Asby and Albert Kirk. The first photo shows that business in 1915.

The location had a few other businesses in it from 1918 to 1932, like Chalmers Motor Sales, Adams Installment Goods and American Gear Co.

In 1932, Richard Welborn and Albert Rose opened Welborn &amp; Rose Auto Parts &amp; Machinists. Later, Welborn decided to go it alone at another location. The second photo shows the Rose family out front around 1950.

Many family members have been part of this business, including Albert Jr. being president from 1966 to 1990. The third photo shows Rose Motor Supply still at 109-111 E. Sherman St. today, with Keith Rose president of this long-standing family business.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Construction Rental Inc. held a ribbon cutting and grand opening Wednesday morning for its newest location at 1402 Faubion St. in Hutchinson, marking the company’s fifth store overall and second in Kansas.

The event included lunch, refreshments and giveaways for attendees. The store is now open to the public Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Owner/President Marynell Popst said the company offers a wide range of construction equipment rentals and tool sales, serving both professional contractors and do-it-yourself homeowners.

“We rent construction equipment and sell construction tools and supplies, anything from safety equipment for contractors, like harnesses for fall protection and caution tape, to chainsaws and trimmers for the homeowner doing yard work,” Popst said.

Construction Rental Inc. also offers a weekend rental option that allows customers to pick up equipment after 3 p.m. on Friday and return it Monday for the price of a one-day rental.

Available services at the Hutchinson location include rentals for air compressors, air tools, backhoes and loaders, compactors and rammers, concrete tools, convention equipment, electric tools, forklifts, generators, heaters, jacks, lawn and garden equipment, lifts and scaffolding, saws, skid steers and trenchers.

Popst said Hutchinson was an ideal fit for the company’s expansion.

“We looked around at different locations, and Hutchinson was a good market with a lot of activity, a lot of contractors and a lot of homeowners who do their own projects,” she said. “We liked the size of the market and really knew it was a good fit for our personality.”

Construction Rental Inc. also operates locations in Salina, Kansas; Grand Island and North Platte, Nebraska; and St. Joseph, Missouri.

PRATT, Kan.&nbsp; — Runners, walkers, and history buffs alike are invited to step back in time for a good cause at the 2nd Annual B-29 Museum &amp; Memorial 5K, scheduled for Saturday, June 7.

Hosted on the historic grounds of the B-29 Museum in Pratt, the event supports the only museum in Kansas dedicated to preserving the legacy of the B-29 Superfortress and the role of the Pratt Army Air Field during World War II.

Participants can choose between a scenic, certified 5K race—timed by Timer Guys—or a one-mile historical walk that winds along a trail through the museum grounds. All 5K finishers will receive a custom logo medal and T-shirt, with top finishers in each age group, male and female, earning special awards.

The community event will wrap up with a free picnic lunch at 11 a.m., open to all participants.

Pratt B-29 Museum to hold 5K run Saturday 

 The Hutchinson Youth City Council is calling on residents to come together for a morning of community service during the Cow Creek Cleanup event this Saturday, June 7.

Volunteers will gather at Avenue A Park, near the gazebo, from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. to help clean up the Cow Creek waterway. The event is open to the public, and participants of all ages are encouraged to join in the effort to keep one of Hutchinson’s natural spaces clean and safe.

Organizers are asking volunteers to bring gloves, trash bags (extras will be available), and shoes suitable for wet or muddy conditions.

“This is a chance for us to give back and protect our local environment,” said a spokesperson for the Hutchinson Youth City Council. “Even one bag of trash can make a difference.”

The event promotes environmental stewardship and civic engagement among youth and the broader community. No registration is required, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP or message organizers with questions.

Master Gardener's Summer Garden Tour is June 14

A flurry of last-minute candidate filings ahead of the June 2 noon deadline has finalized the list of local races for Reno County’s 2025 election cycle — but no race drew enough candidates to require a primary.

According to the Reno County Clerk’s Office, all city council, school board and local office contests will move directly to the general election on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Residents planning to vote in the November general election must ensure they are registered. The deadline to register or update voter registration information will be announced closer to the election, but voters are encouraged to check their status early through the Kansas Secretary of State’s website or the Reno County Clerk’s Office.

No primary needed as filing deadline passes 

Yesway, a rapidly-growing convenience store chain with six locations in central Kansas and parent company of the Allsup’s brand, is preparing to exit the Iowa and Kansas markets by the end of 2025, a company spokesperson confirmed to CSP Daily News, a publication for convenience store and petroleum retailers.  The transition will see more than 20 locations in those states transferred to new owners. 

Yesway has four locations in Hutchinson, one in Lyons and one in McPherson  

The report says that the strategic pullback comes as the company intensifies its focus on expansion in southern U.S. markets, particularly Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Yesway announced earlier that it plans to “significantly” grow its footprint in these states in 2024 and beyond. In December, it added three new stores in Texas and two in New Mexico. 

With more than 400 locations under its Yesway and Allsup’s banners, the company currently operates in nine states: Texas, New Mexico, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Nebraska. 

In a statement provided to CSP Daily News, a Yesway spokesperson said, “As we continue to grow the Yesway brand and expand our offering to our customers, we may have the opportunity to divest certain stores that do not match our strategy and reinvest the proceeds in locations that enable us to provide a better customer experience. We plan to continue our growth and are focused on building the best network of store locations to meet the needs of our valued customers. As these stores in Iowa and Kansas transition to new owners by the end of this year, we do not anticipate there will be closures.” 

Founded in 2015 and owned by BW Gas &amp; Convenience Holdings LLC, Yesway has steadily evolved into a major player in the convenience retail sector. Its acquisition of the Allsup’s chain in 2019 marked a pivotal moment in its growth trajectory. The company further centralized its operations in August 2020 by relocating its Des Moines, Iowa, and Clovis, New Mexico, corporate offices to new headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. 

The decision to scale back in Iowa and Kansas reflects Yesway’s broader strategy to consolidate operations and invest in markets with higher growth potential. The identity of the new owners for the Iowa and Kansas stores has not yet been disclosed.

Yesway to sell Kansas locations

WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has announced a full weekend closure of both northbound and southbound Interstate 135 in Wichita for construction and maintenance activities. The closure is scheduled from the evening of Friday, June 6, through the early morning of Monday, June 9.

During the closure, KDOT crews will conduct pavement patching, bridge surface repairs, and adjustments to the barrier wall.

Northbound traffic will be detoured to eastbound K-96. Motorists will exit at Hillside Street and loop back via westbound K-96 to return to northbound I-135. Please note: drivers will not be able to access Hillside Street in either direction from the K-96 detour route.

All lanes and ramps are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, June 9.

KDOT urges motorists to allow extra travel time, follow all posted detour signs, and use alternate routes where possible. Drivers should exercise caution and remain alert while traveling near the construction zone.

I-135 to close for construction work this weekend 

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Inman native, Peter Buller, was one of three graduating seniors to receive the prestigious Thresher Award, Bethel College’s highest academic honor, at the school’s annual Awards Convocation in May.

Buller was recognized in both Bible and religion and music, a rare distinction that capped a standout academic and artistic career at the North Newton liberal arts college. He graduated May 18 with a degree in Bible and religion and a minor in music.

“Peter’s seminar project represented the culmination of an outstanding academic career at Bethel College,” Peter Goerzen, chair of the Bible and religion department said, in a citation delivered on behalf of himself and colleague Dr. Trent Voth. “He has contributed insights reflective of careful and mature theological discernment and a commitment to Jesus Christ and his body, the church.”

Goerzen praised Buller’s “warmth, patient respect, and self-aware curiosity,” adding that Buller made a lasting impact beyond the classroom as a tutor, teaching assistant and researcher. “We will especially miss the graduate-level research assistance Peter has provided,” he said.

In music, Buller was equally active, participating in both vocal and instrumental ensembles and completing a senior recital on oboe and piano.

“Peter perfectly embodies our vision for Bethel graduates,” said Dr. Christina Liu, associate professor of music. “His work ethic, leadership, kindness and musical passion have touched the lives of those around him.”

The Thresher Award is given annually to graduating seniors who demonstrate exceptional academic performance and distinguished senior projects. Also honored this year were Emil Benavides of Stockton, for forensics, and Gracie Higgins of Tacoma, Washington, for art.

Bethel College, founded in 1887, is the oldest Mennonite college in North America and a recognized Truth, Community Healing and Transformation (TCHT) Campus Center.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson City Council will meet as scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall to consider a range of issues, including playground upgrades, street maintenance, and state fair support funding.

The council will consider approving a $75,000 project to purchase and install new playground equipment at Shadduck Park. The proposed upgrades would be completed by Greenfields Outdoor Fitness in partnership with the Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club.

An update regarding the property at 3405 E. 4th Ave. has been removed from the agenda and will be heard at the June 17 meeting at the request of the applicant.

Also on the agenda is the acceptance of a $1.1 million bid from APAC–Kansas for the city’s 2025 arterial street maintenance project. If approved, the motion would authorize the mayor to sign the contract.

The council will also vote on whether to support funding for the Kansas State Fair Emergency Operations Command Center.

City council to meet tonight 

Kansas has been ranked the ninth-best state in the U.S. for aging in place, according to a new study released by Seniorly, a senior living resource platform. The ranking comes at a time when a record 4.2 million Americans are turning 65 this year, with nearly three-quarters expressing a preference to remain in their homes as they age.

The study analyzed ten key factors across all 50 states and the District of Columbia using data from the CDC, Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services, U.S. Census Bureau, HUD, and other sources. Metrics included the availability of home health aides, emergency room wait times, housing costs, smart home adoption, and services like meal delivery.

Kansas stood out in several areas, helping to earn its top-10 ranking. The state boasts relatively short emergency room wait times, averaging 121 minutes — the sixth shortest nationwide. It also sees moderate precipitation levels at 27 inches per year, which is tied for 13th best. Additionally, 27.7% of residents interact with household equipment via the internet, signaling a relatively high rate of smart home technology adoption, which can be crucial for older adults living independently.

"Aging in place provides comfort and familiarity, and Kansas appears to offer the kind of infrastructure that supports seniors who want to stay in their homes," the report states.

 A newly formed advocacy group backed by Bayer is raising red flags over a recent federal report that it says could threaten farmers’ access to essential crop protection products.

The group, known as the Modern Ag Alliance, was created in response to concerns stemming from the Make America Healthy Again Commission report. According to the alliance, the report suggests that the federal government could move toward restricting or banning the use of certain agricultural chemicals—a move the group warns could have sweeping consequences.

In a statement, the Modern Ag Alliance said such restrictions would “undermine science-based regulatory frameworks” and potentially “jeopardize the safety and stability of the U.S. food supply.” The group emphasized that farmers are already grappling with rising costs, volatile markets, and unpredictable weather, and losing access to vital crop protection tools would add unnecessary burden.

“These tools are critical to maintaining productivity and protecting crops from pests, weeds, and disease,” the alliance said. “Farmers shouldn’t have to worry about losing access to the science-backed solutions they rely on.”

While the commission’s report has not led to any regulatory changes yet, the Modern Ag Alliance says it plans to advocate aggressively on behalf of farmers and the broader agriculture industry, urging policymakers to prioritize science and sustainability in any future decisions.

Ag Minute: Protecting crop protection products 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Charges have been filed in Reno County against a former employee of USD 309.

On Friday evening, May 30, prosecutors filed five criminal charges against Whitney Shull following alleged incidents that occurred earlier this year.

According to court documents, the first four charges stem from events between Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The fifth count is tied to an incident on or about March 15.

All charges were e-filed under case number 2025 CR 386. The most serious offenses are felonies, while others are class A misdemeanors.

Regarding the appointment of Marc Bennett, as Specially Appointed Prosecutor in the Reno County case, when a prosecutor’s office discovers a conflict with a particular case or defendant, the elected prosecutor typically seeks the assistance of the Office of the Kansas Attorney General, a prosecutor from another jurisdiction or a private attorney to prosecute the case in question.    

As a professional courtesy, Mr. Bennett agreed to handle the Shull matter at the request of Thomas Stanton, the District Attorney in Reno County.  Mr. Bennett will receive no compensation for his role in the Reno County case. 

A court date has not yet been announced. The Reno County District Attorney’s Office says a separate news release will be issued once the first appearance is scheduled.

Former USD 309 employee charged 

TOPEKA, Kan. — Evergy has filed a request with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) seeking a rate increase of $196.4 million for its Evergy Kansas Central (EKC) customers. If approved, the new rates would take effect in September 2025, resulting in an average monthly increase of $13.05 for residential customers — an overall hike of 8.62%.

The utility company says the proposed increase reflects nearly $1 billion in infrastructure investments, along with adjustments for capital costs and rising operational expenses. However, the request does not include costs tied to the upcoming Panasonic electric vehicle battery plant or the two natural gas facilities Evergy plans to build in Kansas.

As part of the filing, Evergy also proposed a new pilot initiative — the Evergy Stay Connected program — which would provide monthly bill credits to help low-income customers remain current on their accounts.

The rate adjustment affects about 735,000 customers in EKC’s service area, which includes cities like Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, Salina, Hutchinson, and Manhattan. Customers in the Evergy Kansas Metro area — including Overland Park and Lenexa — are not affected by this request.

The KCC, which regulates public utility rates and services, has scheduled two public hearings to gather input and provide information:

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has announced that a resurfacing project on U.S. Highway 50 in Harvey County is scheduled to begin around June 5, with completion expected by mid-July, weather permitting.

The project will involve applying hot-mix asphalt over a stretch of 11.7 miles, starting just north of the I-135/U.S. 50 junction and extending east to the Harvey/Marion County line.

During construction, drivers can expect intermittent delays, as traffic will be directed by flaggers and a pilot car. KDOT advises motorists to be prepared for stops and delays of up to 15 minutes in the work zone.

APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division, based in Hutchinson, has been contracted to complete the $2.7 million project.

KDOT encourages all drivers to remain alert, follow posted signage, and exercise caution when traveling through construction zones.

Resurfacing project on U.S. 50 in Harvey County to begin June 5

In the game of football, success hinges on strategy — coaches draw up plays, run them in practice and refine them before taking them to the gridiron. Researchers play a similar role in the fight against cardiovascular disease, designing new approaches to predict and prevent life-threatening conditions.

In Kansas State University’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/">College of Human Health and Sciences</a>, a team of researchers has been in the metaphorical film room, studying and validating a new playbook for heart health that they believe will lead to victory.

Britton Scheuermann, a doctoral candidate in kinesiology, working in associate professor Carl Ade’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/kines/about/people/cade.html">Clinical Integrated Physiology Laboratory,</a>&nbsp;was the lead author on&nbsp;<a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2824692">a paper in JAMA Network Open</a>, which validated the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.heart.org/">American Heart Association</a>’s new app Predicting Risk of cardiovascular disease EVENTs, or PREVENT, equations to calculate patients’ cardiovascular disease risk.

In the medical field, the relationship between researchers and practitioners is crucial to successful results.

“I look at it in terms of we’re the coaches, and we’re drawing up plays. Each study is a play,” Scheuermann said. “We pitch that play to the players, we run it in practice to see if it works, and then we take it to the game, and hopefully, it’s a huge victory because of our playbook.”

When running the PREVENT equations in practice, Scheuermann found a winning play.

The new equations,&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.heart.org/news/leading-cardiologists-reveal-new-heart-disease-risk-calculator">an update to the Heart Association’s previous models</a>, provide patients who are 30 years or older and their medical providers&nbsp;<a href="https://professional.heart.org/en/guidelines-and-statements/prevent-calculator">with more precise scores</a>. These scores use patient factors like age, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and other metrics to calculate their 10- and 30-year risks of total cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure.

“Our research looked at these equations to see if they accurately predict the occurrence of cardiovascular disease risk, based on actual instances in a database of nearly 200 million participants,” Scheuermann said. “We found that these equations do a great job of identifying people at high risk versus low risk, as well as getting roughly correct estimations of the timeline and occurrences of cardiovascular disease events in different risk categories.”

The previous model used by the Heart Association was a playbook that worked well for many decades. But like any strategist, physiologists always know there is room for new ideas and refinement, and this type of innovation is precisely what the new model brings to the fight against cardiovascular disease, Scheuermann said.

“I look at PREVENT as being like the option offense in football because it gives you a lot more variety,” said Scheuermann. “We have things like kidney and liver health and all these other things that are coming into play with this score. It gives the quarterback a clear picture of what he needs to read once he’s in the game.”

As Scheuermann and his research colleagues lead a drive against cardiovascular disease, the PREVENT equations are poised to be a game-changing play — one that could redefine how medical professionals and patients tackle heart health nationwide.

“Each bit of work is a little step forward,” said Scheuermann. “With our partnership with Stormont Vail, we’re starting to make changes in our local community first, incorporating this into our health care here and helping people in Manhattan and surrounding communities to better understand their cardiovascular health.

“If we can start at this level then hopefully, we can continue to collaborate with other facilities across the country,” he continued. “The hope is that this score becomes something that helps people everywhere better understand their cardiovascular health.”

Researchers play a similar role in the fight against cardiovascular disease, designing new approaches to predict and prevent life-threatening conditions.In Kansas State University’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/">College of Human Health and Sciences</a>, a team of researchers has been in the metaphorical film room, studying and validating a new playbook for heart health that they believe will lead to victory.<figure>

 </figure>Britton Scheuermann, a doctoral candidate in kinesiology, working in associate professor Carl Ade’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/kines/about/people/cade.html">Clinical Integrated Physiology Laboratory,</a>&nbsp;was the lead author on&nbsp;<a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2824692">a paper in JAMA Network Open</a>, which validated the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.heart.org/">American Heart Association</a>’s new app Predicting Risk of cardiovascular disease EVENTs, or PREVENT, equations to calculate patients’ cardiovascular disease risk.In the medical field, the relationship between researchers and practitioners is crucial to successful results.“I look at it in terms of we’re the coaches, and we’re drawing up plays. Each study is a play,” Scheuermann said. “We pitch that play to the players, we run it in practice to see if it works, and then we take it to the game, and hopefully, it’s a huge victory because of our playbook.”When running the PREVENT equations in practice, Scheuermann found a winning play.<figure>

 </figure>The new equations,&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.heart.org/news/leading-cardiologists-reveal-new-heart-disease-risk-calculator">an update to the Heart Association’s previous models</a>, provide patients who are 30 years or older and their medical providers&nbsp;<a href="https://professional.heart.org/en/guidelines-and-statements/prevent-calculator">with more precise scores</a>. These scores use patient factors like age, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and other metrics to calculate their 10- and 30-year risks of total cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure.“Our research looked at these equations to see if they accurately predict the occurrence of cardiovascular disease risk, based on actual instances in a database of nearly 200 million participants,” Scheuermann said. “We found that these equations do a great job of identifying people at high risk versus low risk, as well as getting roughly correct estimations of the timeline and occurrences of cardiovascular disease events in different risk categories.”The previous model used by the Heart Association was a playbook that worked well for many decades. But like any strategist, physiologists always know there is room for new ideas and refinement, and this type of innovation is precisely what the new model brings to the fight against cardiovascular disease, Scheuermann said.“I look at PREVENT as being like the option offense in football because it gives you a lot more variety,” said Scheuermann. “We have things like kidney and liver health and all these other things that are coming into play with this score. Certified Med Aide Full-Time Nights JOB SUMMARY The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) works under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. It is the responsibility of the CMA to serve as a role model for CNA's. Personal care and service to residents is required in a manner that promotes flexibility, safety, comfort and has the resident's overall well-being at the focal point of each task. Duties are performed in accordance with recognized standards, the laws of Kansas and the Mission Statement of Wesley Towers. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS Responsibilities for Medication Administration: 1. Prepare and administer oral/topical medications as ordered by the physician and as directed by the plan of care. 2. Use "5 rights" when administering each medication, Right Resident, Right Medication, Right Time, Right Route, Right Dosage. 3. Document administration of medication on the Medication Record as outlined in the policies and procedures. Document outcome of giving PRN medications. 4. Notify the Licensed Nurses of stop orders, stock supply needs, drugs needing to be destroyed and medication errors. 5. Assist licensed nurse with removal of discontinued meds from medication cart. 6. Identify all residents utilizing photographs before administering treatments and medications. 7. Count controlled medications with a licensed nurse. 8. Keep medication cart clean and stocked for next shift. Responsibilities for Resident Care: 1. Treat all residents with dignity and respect, including those with disruptive behaviors and insure resident rights are maintained at all times. 2. Assist with implementing resident's plan of care and assist with interpreting plan of care to CNAs. Provide resident with opportunities for independence and choice consistent with their care plan. Set example of quality nursing care for CNAs on the team. 3. Some shift assignments will require the CMA to be responsible for passing the majority of the medications to assigned residents. 4. Support and foster good relationships with residents, families and visitors. 5. Answer call lights promptly. 6. Provide input into the assessment of the resident and the care planning process by sharing ideas with the Charge/Licensed Nurse and Unit Care Coordinator. 7. Complete documentation of tasks performed and other documentation according to Wesley Towers policy/procedures, including vital signs, meal percentages, weights and other documentation as needed. 8. Assist residents with transfers, promote ambulation and exercise, transport residents as needed and as designated on resident Plan of Care using Gait Belts, proper transfer techniques, and lifts per facility Policy and Procedures. 9. Make beds and change bedding as needed for resident comfort/hygiene. 10. Meet residents nutritional needs by assisting with meal set-up as each individual resident requires and provide assistance with eating as needed; Responsible for distributing and assisting residents with snacks. 11. Report any behavioral or physical changes in residents' condition, problems, concerns, grievances with residents and/or families/responsible parties to the Charge Nurse/Licensed Nurse or administrative personnel. 12. Provide personal care for the residents in a calm, friendly manner including but not limited to: a. Bathing b. Dressing c. Shaving d. Care of hair and nails e. Oral hygiene f. Toileting, incontinent care, catheter care and placement. g. Encourage self-sufficiency in performance of all ADLs. 13. Provide resident care in private, maintaining resident dignity and resident rights. 14. Maintain optimal resident mobility and skin integrity by promoting ambulation and exercise. 15. Check residents routinely to ensure all needs are met in a timely manner. 16. Maintain confidentiality of resident information. 17. Intervene appropriately to modify disruptive behavior. 18. Practice universal precautions and proper disposal of infectious waste at all times. 19. Perform treatments and document them in the nurse?s notes, including observations and progress. 20. Assist with activities/getting residents to activities to enhance resident functioning and well-being on both an individual and small group basis; become familiar with individual resident preferences. 21. Be aware of and follow plan of care; it is the responsibility of the CMA to maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in plan of care. 22. Maintain open lines of communication with DON, Nursing Coordinator, professional nursing staff and other CMA's, CNA's. 23. Demonstrates a positive image to residents, families and other visitors, and peers to enhance the image of Wesley Towers, Inc. 24. Assist with and participate in continuous service improvement activities as directed. 25. Know the location of all standards/policy/procedure manuals, disaster manual, infection control manual, and Material Safety Data sheets. 26. Report all incidents and exposures immediately to supervisor. 27. Use and operate equipment in a safe manner. Report unsafe or defective equipment immediately to supervisor. 28. Demonstrate safety and cost effectiveness in the delivery of care according to Wesley Towers policies/procedures. 29. Is aware of cost to provide resident care. Use only equipment and supplies necessary to complete care. 30. Maintain a clean, safe, nursing environment at all times. 31. Note safety hazards and corrects them immediately. 32. Maintain Certification with State agency. QUALIFICATIONS Must have current CMA certification in accordance with the laws of the state of Kansas. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be capable of understanding and following oral and written instructions. High School diploma or GED preferred. Keep CMA certificate current by attending 10 hours of prescribed continuing education every two years. Previous experience in geriatric care desired. Ability to communicate with team members and residents. Positive attitude toward the ill and the elderly. Able to cope with the mental and emotional stress related to the position. Special Demands: Must be flexible as schedule changes. Willingness to work with the realization that errors or incompetence can cause serious consequences for the resident. Must have patience and tact and be able to communicate effectively with residents, families, and other staff members. Must have good eye sight to observe residents and to give nursing care, read thermometers, and to complete documentation. Can hear normal and soft tones to hear resident calls. Be aware that working with residents with dementia may expose staff to residents who become violent, combative, or aggressive without notice or provocation. It is important for all staff to respond in appropriate manner, remaining calm and non-threatening. Must be able to distinguish smells. Is familiar with and capable of operating all special equipment utilized for the benefit of the residents within health care. Physical Demands: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting and reaching above head. Must be able to crawl in case of fire. Must be able to lift unassisted up to 30 pounds. Must be able to carry unassisted up to 30 pounds. Must be able to do grasping and fine manipulating with both hands. Must be able to push and pull carts and to push residents in wheelchairs. Suli was able to get in and out of the car by herself and did a great job walking on her leash! Suli liked sniffing around and getting belly rubs from Sergeant McIntire. Suli was nervous at first, but did warm up to her surroundings.
