HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the aftermath of the devastating tornado that struck Plevna and surrounding areas of Reno County, local families, volunteers, and organizations are rallying to support long-term recovery efforts.

To date, an estimated 522 tons of debris, primarily from damaged homes, has been hauled away, reflecting both the extent of the storm’s destruction and the resilience of the community.

A coordinated network of local partners known as Reno County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) has taken the lead in providing immediate and ongoing support. Among them, United Way of Reno County (UWRC) is working toward a $250,000 fundraising goal to help residents rebuild.

“Every dollar raised helps provide the tools and resources our neighbors need to rebuild their lives,” said Lacey Mills, CEO of UWRC. “We’re incredibly grateful to those who have donated and ask others to consider contributing.”

Donations can be made securely online at&nbsp;<a href="https://unitedwayofrenocounty.org/disaster">unitedwayofrenocounty.org/disaster</a>.

As recovery moves forward, the next step for affected families will be a contractor bid tour scheduled for Wednesday, July 2. During the tour, licensed and insured contractors will assess repair projects, primarily roof and window work, and submit bids.

Contractors interested in participating must register by Wednesday, June 25, with Jeff Thomson of Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services. Registration is available by phone at 620-259-9916 or by email at <a>jefft@interfaithks.org</a>.

Plevna tornado recovery efforts continue, next steps underway

Emergency crews responded Tuesday to a two-vehicle crash in the 3100 block of North Main Street after a driver reportedly suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

According to authorities, the driver of a pickup truck experienced a medical event while traveling on Main Street. The truck collided with another vehicle before veering off the road and crashing into a nearby office building.

Minor injuries were reported among those involved in the crash. No serious injuries have been confirmed at this time.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Three-day weather outlook 

HARVEY COUNTY —On June 6, 2025, Judge Jason Lane of the 9th Judicial District of Kansas sentenced Marcus Perez Jr., 34, of Leonardville, Kansas, to 154 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for Unlawful Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine in an amount exceeding 100 grams, according to the Harvey County Attorney's office.

The sentence stems from a July 5, 2024, traffic stop conducted by Harvey County Sheriff’s Deputies, during which Perez was found in possession of a significant quantity of methamphetamine. The drugs were hidden in a magnetic box concealed under Perez’s seat.

Further investigation included a search of Perez’s phone, which uncovered multiple conversations indicating ongoing attempts to distribute illegal narcotics. Perez has a history of prior convictions, having been convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in both 2015 and 2018 in Clay County, Kansas.

This sentence reflects the seriousness of Mr. Perez’s continued involvement in drug trafficking and the Harvey County Attorney Office’s commitment to protecting our communities from the dangers of methamphetamine. The case was prosecuted with the assistance of the Harvey County Sheriff Drug Interdiction Unit.

Kansas felon caught hiding meth in metal box under his car seat

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Municipal Band, one of the oldest continually operating ensembles of its kind, is celebrating its 150th year in 2025 with a full slate of summer performances, continuing tonight with its second concert of the season.

The band will take the stage at 8 p.m. in the recital hall at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the Hutchinson Community College campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1875, the band’s longevity is a source of pride for its members and the Hutchinson community.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but the Municipal Band is actually written into the city charter,” said Charles Johnston, the group’s vice president. “It states that the city should maintain a military band. Originally, there was even a specific tax levied for that purpose. Over time, of course, that was folded into the general fund.”

Johnston said the ensemble’s funding and structure have evolved through the decades, but the mission has remained constant.

“Like many arts organizations over the years, our funding has waxed and waned,” he said. “So we're really pleased to have made it to 150 years. It's unusual for any organization, let alone a musical ensemble, to last that long.”

The group typically includes 35 to 55 musicians per concert and draws from a wide swath of the community, ranging from high school students to working professionals in fields like education, engineering, medicine and logistics.

“That’s one of the things I’m really proud of,” Johnston said. “The band continues to provide young people with their first professional gig. That’s what it was for me. I was in high school, sitting next to professionals and teachers. It was inspiring.”

He added that the diversity of the group adds depth and perspective to the ensemble.

“It’s made up of professional musicians, music educators, engineers, doctors, secretaries, nonprofit leaders and even FedEx drivers,” Johnston said. “All of these individuals had music touch their lives in some way.”

Each Tuesday performance features a new program, often assembled just hours before the show.

“We show up at 6 p.m., and by 8 p.m., we’re performing music we’ve often never seen before,” Johnston said. “Sight-reading is a crucial skill, and the Municipal Band relies on musicians who can do it well.”

After facing weather-related cancellations last summer in the central park area at HutchCC, the band has shifted its season indoors to the Stringer Fine Arts Center, where the recital hall offers both more space and protection from Kansas’s unpredictable weather.

“Last year we had to cancel three concerts, which was pretty unprecedented,” Johnston said. “And the gazebo at the park just wasn’t built to handle a group our size. So moving indoors has really solved a lot of those issues.”

This year’s summer concert series opened June 3 and continues on June 10, June 17, June 24 and July 1, with special performances by South City Jazz, an affiliated ensemble, on July 6 and July 15.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Johnston said. “Marches, Broadway, patriotic themes, movie soundtracks, you name it. And every concert is different, with a fresh set of selections and a different conductor each week.”

This season’s rotation of conductors includes Abby Giles of Sterling USD 376, Sterling Reynolds of Central Christian School, Dan Brinkley of Nickerson–South Hutchinson USD 309, Daryl Koestel of Hutchinson USD 308, and Jeff Pelischek, retired from HutchCC.

The band expects to have between 50 and 75 musicians participate throughout the summer season, a reflection of both the ensemble’s broad reach and its deep community roots.

“It's a real cross-section of the community, and that’s a lot of people to coordinate and manage,” Johnston said. “But it’s worth it. Music brings people together, and that’s what this band has been doing for 150 years.”

Hutchinson Municipal Band performs tonight on HutchCC campus

In a Facebook post, the City of Arlington said that they have taken a major step toward improving its Community Center Gym, thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Helen Adams Hamilton Children and Education Fund of the Hutchinson Community Foundation.

With the grant and strong community backing, fundraising efforts have now reached a total of $32,428.38. The funds will go toward the installation of 60-foot tube heaters and an 18-foot industrial fan, helping bring much-needed climate control to the gym.

Work is scheduled to begin June 9, with Kraft Electric and Flow Tech Solutions leading the installation. City officials say the upgrades should be complete in time for the 4th of July holiday.

“We’re thrilled to say: we should have heat for the 4th of July!” the city said in a Facebook post.&nbsp;

Several local businesses and organizations have also contributed to the project, including Miller Earthworks, Inc., Dream First Bank, Kansas Gas Services, Inc., 61 Liquor, Yutzy Contracting &amp; Sons, Decker &amp; Mattison Co., Inc., Elliott Mortuary, Steve’s Dozing &amp; Scraping, Wray and Sons Roofing, and Rocking LD Angus Ranch.

The EVS Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for maintaining the assets and property of The Wesley and performing all tasks safely, competently, and completely. The working environment includes older adult residents, staff, visitors, and others and requires personnel to be mindful of their safety and convenience at all times. The work environment also requires personnel to be patient and flexible because it is subject to frequent disruptions and interruptions of work processes and schedules.

The EVS Maintenance Tech is to maintain the interior and exterior of all buildings, equipment, other property and assets, assist with emergencies, and other duties as outlined below within the scope of the individual’s training and knowledge. EVS personnel do not work on live or energized electrical components and must employ the WT Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures when working on any electrical components or equipment.

Maintain heating and air-conditioning systems, lighting and electrical systems, plumbing systems, and other building systems and equipment.

Perform minor carpentry tasks as required.

Maintain fire alarm and mitigation systems.

Have good working knowledge of automated and non-automated maintenance scheduling and recordkeeping systems and input required data.

Maintain resident assistive devices and equipment owned by The Wesley.

Maintain compliance with Life Safety Code (LSC) and other applicable regulations, codes, and other requirements including reporting and correcting unsafe or noncompliant issues when encountered. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn as directed.

Communicate effectively with supervisory staff, other staff, residents, visitors, contractors, and vendors, including responding timely to two-way radio calls.

Complete educational and training requirements timely and participate in any drills or training scenarios as applicable.

Operate company equipment and vehicles and participate in errands and resident transportation when necessary.

Incorporate good stewardship in the use of company resources, including time management.

Participate in an on-call rotation, which may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Must be able to concentrate on detail with frequent interruptions and be able to communicate and respond clearly on telephone and two-way radio.

The Kansas Central Model Railroaders will host their ninth annual train show this weekend, June 14–15, at the Pride of Kansas Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, promising two days of family-friendly entertainment, hands-on exhibits, and a vendor hall packed with model railroading treasures.

The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, offers admission for $8 per person or $15 for two attendees. Children are admitted free.

“It’s like the Toy Depot on steroids,” said Marc Buckley, owner of Hutchinson’s Toy Depot and a long-time supporter of the event. “We have everything from N scale to G gauge, and kids can even run the trains themselves using iPads — ringing bells, blowing whistles — the whole experience.”

Lonnie Demoret of the Kansas Central Model Railroaders noted that more than 125 vendors are expected, offering trains, accessories, collectibles, and hobbyist goods. “There are great bargains you won’t find anywhere else,” he said. “We have vendors from across Kansas and even Oklahoma.”

The show includes interactive train layouts, including one of the only traveling boards in the state that allows kids to control trains via touchscreen technology.

Model railroading enthusiasts of all experience levels are encouraged to attend, and Buckley emphasized that the hobby is accessible for all ages. “For kids, O gauge is easier to handle. For adults, HO is popular because you can create more detailed scenery and layouts,” he said.

Demoret shared a bit of model railroading history as well, highlighting Lionel’s evolution — including its new “Base 3” legacy system, which allows old and new trains to be operated via remote or tablet. “It’s great for younger generations who are used to Bluetooth and mobile tech,” he said.

The Kansas Central Model Railroaders club, founded in 1983, is currently seeking a permanent home for its growing membership and layout collection. The club previously operated out of various locations in Hutchinson, including the downtown area and the local mall.

The Kingman and Stafford fire departments recently each received a donation of a pallet of cans of water from Budweiser. The cans are a donation of clean drinking water courtesy of Budweiser and the National Volunteer Fire Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the National Volunteer Fire Council Anheuser-Busch periodically pauses beer production to can emergency drinking water to be ready lend a hand during natural disasters and other crises.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Building on this commitment, the brewer teamed up with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) in 2019 to create the Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program.

Keeping firefighters hydrated during long incidents or disasters such as wildfires is a critical need for fire departments, yet many volunteer departments struggle with limited budget and resources. To help departments meet this need, Anheuser-Busch will donate 1.5 million cans of clean drinking water in 2025 to prepare local volunteer firefighters with vital resources ahead of the annual summer wildfire season, rather than waiting until after disaster strikes. 

Since the partnership with the NVFC began, 10.4 million cans of water have been distributed to over 3,100 departments across almost all 50 states. That amount of water equals nearly $1.3 million in cost savings for local departments.

When the Kansas legislature selected a state tree it chose the native cottonwood because its presence was synonymous with homestead success. The fast-growing trees require adequate moisture to grow, so a standing grove indicated crops were likely to succeed as well."

It might honestly be said that the successful growth of the cottonwood grove on the homestead was often the determining factor in the decision of the homesteader to stick it out until he could prove up on his claim,” legislators reasoned in 1937. “The cottonwood tree can rightfully be called the pioneer tree of Kansas."

Cottonwoods were also named the state tree in Nebraska and Wyoming, largely for the same reason.

A large specimen of the popular poplar stood just outside the Statehouse when the cottonwood became Kansas’ state tree. It had shaded citizens and politicians alike, with presidents Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley and William Howard Taft having sought refuge under its canopy.

Standing in the shadow of a cottonwood’s triangular leaves offers protection from the sun and a bit of a light show. The top side of the leaves are a lustrous green while the underside reflects hints of silver causing a shimmering effect as they sway in the breeze. The fronds turn a brilliant yellow before falling to the ground in the fall.

Legend has it the Statehouse Cottonwood sprouted from a stake driven during the construction of the Capitol. A less exciting (and more believable) story is the tree was already an established sapling in 1866 when construction started and it survived the building process, in addition to other calamities before succumbing to old age in 1984. Today a cutting from the original grows in its place.

While not a redwood or sequoia, cottonwoods can be massive compared to other trees in Kansas. They top out around 100 feet, but the trunks can be several feet in diameter. The towering nature of the trees meant they also served as landmarks, like one in Osage County that designated a turn on the Santa Fe Trail.

Cottonwoods don’t get their name from the wood inside those towering trunks. Instead, it comes from the small seeds the behemoths produce. The lightweight kernels are coated in fluffy fibers resembling strands of cotton that act like sails dispersing the seeds with the wind.

The alleged incidents occurred in Reno County between Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, and involved instances where Shull allegedly engaged in sexual acts with two teens; one consensual and one non-consensual, when the alleged victim was unconscious, and held down the wrists of a third teen to unsuccessfully engage in a sex act, according to a complaint filed in Reno County District court.

Shull's attorney did not attend the hearing. Shull is scheduled to return to court for a status hearing July 23.

On June 2, Shull met the requirement of bond and is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Teacher accused of sex crimes with students appears in court

Reno County commissioners will meet on Wednesday morning for a regularly scheduled meeting. &nbsp;The meeting will be in the Veterans’ Room of the Reno County Courthouse at 9 a.m. &nbsp;

On the agenda is an item to approve a $26,740 professional survey that could shape the future of a proposed countywide sales tax increase, as local leaders explore options to fund infrastructure and public services while easing pressure on property taxes.&nbsp;

The proposal stems from a Feb. 4 joint meeting between the Reno County Commission and Hutchinson City Council, during which both governing bodies expressed support for a sales tax measure to benefit cities throughout the county. The long-term aim is to place a finalized sales tax proposal on the 2026 ballot.&nbsp;

If approved, the survey would be conducted by Wichita State University’s Public Policy and Management Center. It would measure voter support for a potential half-cent or full-cent sales tax increase and identify which types of projects or services—such as roads, public safety, or economic development—might earn the most community backing.&nbsp;

County Administrator Randy Partington endorsed the plan in a memo to commissioners, calling it a “small investment” that could help develop ballot language likely to pass.&nbsp;

“The survey gives us solid data to shape a sales tax proposal that voters may be more likely to support,” he wrote.&nbsp;

Revenue projections suggest a half-cent increase could bring in roughly $3 million annually for the county’s share alone, while a full cent could generate about $6 million. The current 1-cent countywide sales tax, in place since the early 2000s, has provided consistent revenue for municipalities over the last five years.&nbsp;

Commissioners will consider whether to approve the WSU agreement, reject the proposal, or table it for further discussion. The funds would come from the county’s general fund under a designated line item for professional services.&nbsp;

In other business, the commission will consider the approval of a $763,500 construction bid for a new emergency medical services station in Arlington. The low bid, submitted by Ward Davis Builders, came in just over the county’s original $750,000 budget.&nbsp;

Officials say the overage is due to rising material costs and unplanned geotechnical requirements for the site. The project will be paid for with a mix of federal allocations and the county’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) reserve funds.&nbsp;

Construction could begin as early as July. Once completed, the station—EMS Station 3—will bolster emergency response capabilities in the Arlington area.&nbsp;

Emergency Management Storage Facility&nbsp;

Commissioners will also consider a $357,798 bid from Richardson Brothers Construction to build a new Emergency Management storage facility.&nbsp;

The project, identified in the county’s 2025 CIP, aims to consolidate equipment, vehicles, and trailers that are currently scattered across various locations, including fire stations and the Kansas State Fairgrounds.&nbsp;

Richardson Brothers was the sole bidder when sealed bids were opened May 30. After value engineering, the bid was trimmed by nearly $30,000 from its original estimate of $387,000.&nbsp;

The final project cost of $379,648 includes $7,000 in permitting and surveying fees and $14,850 to meet new zoning requirements after the site was rezoned. Those requirements include installing privacy slats in perimeter fencing.&nbsp;

Although the project exceeds the original $300,000 budget, county staff recommends approval, with the additional costs covered by CIP and reserve funds. Staff will continue to look for ways to reduce zoning-related expenses.&nbsp;

Commission to consider sales tax survey, two new buildings

BUHLER, Kan. — A new dining option is rolling into Buhler later this month, but its roots run deep in carnival traditions and small-town values.

Bubba’s Burgers, owned and operated by longtime concessionaire Matthew Hall, is set to open Wednesday, June 25, at 111 N. Main St. in downtown Buhler. The restaurant will be open Wednesday through Monday and closed Tuesdays, offering what Hall describes as “good food fast” with a retro diner feel and a commitment to fresh and local ingredients.

“I’ve been around food my entire life,” Hall said. “My mom and dad did carnivals, festivals, fairs, like the Kansas State Fair, and I started working for them as soon as I could see over a counter.”

Hall, a third-generation concessionaire who grew up in rural North Dakota, started his own mobile food business at age 15. Over 26 years, he built it into a multi-offering operation, serving items like funnel cakes, Philly steak sandwiches, corn dogs, blooming onions, fried veggies, and fresh-battered cheese curds. Now, he’s taking that experience off the road and into a permanent location.

“We’re just taking the wheels out from under it,” he said. “It’ll be homemade food served fast, the way we did it at the fairgrounds, faster than McDonald’s.”

The name “Bubba’s Burgers” carries personal meaning. Hall named the restaurant in memory of his late son, Carson (AKA Bubba), who passed away in 2018 after a battle with brain cancer.

The menu will feature hand-breaded pork tenderloins, chicken dinners, and rotating daily specials. Wing Wednesday, Taco Thursday with deep-fried taco shells, and Fried Chicken Friday are already locked in. A prime rib sandwich special is also in the works. There will even be Philly steak sandwiches, including three specialties, the Wisconsin topped with cheese curds or the spicy fire Philly.

The diner will offer hand-scooped shakes in 15 flavors, dubbed “Twisters”, along with soft-serve cones and sundaes. The twisters will be a a taste of nostalgia in every bite, made with hand scooped ice cream like the old days.

Hall said he’s focused on sourcing as many ingredients locally as possible, including produce from Smith’s Market and meats from Jackson Meat. His relationship with Chris Barnes, owner of Smith’s Market in Hutchinson, played a pivotal role in the restaurant’s development.

“Chris is one of my closest friends,” Hall said. “When I was looking to transition out of the mobile business, he kept telling me to be patient, that the right thing would come along. He’s been a big supporter through all of this.”

Barnes’ encouragement helped guide Hall toward Buhler, and their shared belief in buying local helped shape the restaurant’s philosophy.

“I love Smith’s Market, it’s a wonderful little store,” Hall said. “We’ve always tried to support each other’s businesses. It just made sense to bring that mindset to Buhler, and I hope the community sees that commitment in what we’re doing.”

Hall said the restaurant will be consistently open, hoping to bring reliability to a location that has seen turnover in recent years.“When I walked down Main Street, it reminded me of home,” Hall said. “The community shouldn’t have to drive all the way to Hutch to get a good meal.
