BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman posted on social media Monday about an accident involving long-time Buhler faculty members Don and Susan Cameron. 

Saturday about 5:30 p.m., Don and Susan Cameron were involved in a car accident in Lenexa.  Susan died at the scene and Don was hospitalized with some critical injuries. 

 Please keep the Cameron's in your prayers as Don recovers and the family struggles to process the sudden death of their mom and grandma.  Susan taught 1st grade at Union Valley before retiring.

  Don (also known as DC) was an administrator and head boys basketball coach at Buhler High. Their children, Aubrey, Chris, Brandon and Brooke, all graduated from Buhler.  Susan had big ties to Buhler as Susan is Bob Burkholder's daughter. 

 Burkholder Administrative Center is named after Bob, who was a long-time superintendent in Buhler.  Both Susan and Don touched countless lives in our community.  Please join us in lifting up the family in prayer as they process this tragic death and pray for Don’s full recovery.

Long-time USD 313 educators in accident; one dies

HUTCHINSON — Kansas State Highway Patrol troopers are very busy at the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

 On Sunday night, troopers recovered a stolen firearm, according to a social media report from Trooper Tod Hileman . This is the second firearms related incident Hileman has communicated during the fair.

On Friday night troopers responded to a subject brandishing a weapon on the fairgrounds, according to Hileman.

The subject was placed under arrest for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for possession of a firearm while intoxicated.&nbsp;

"KHP Troopers are dedicated to your protection even while you’re having fun at the Kansas State Fair," Hileman said on social media.

 The KHP released no additional details including the name of the suspect in the Friday night arrest.

Troopers recover a stolen gun at the Kansas State Fair

YODER, Kan. — Nitrate levels have continued to be above allowable limits in Rural Water District 101, which serves the Yoder area. 

The last nitrate level test was collected on September 3, 2024.The level tested at 11.0 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas and Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems. The nitrate levels in water resources have fluctuated in many areas which come from natural, industrial, or agricultural sources (including septic systems and run-off).

A test performed on August 12, 2020, resulted in a level above the maximum. Reno County received a precautionary public notice for acute nitrate violation from KDHE. A notification was then sent to the Yoder residents educating them about nitrates in drinking water. Subsequent notices were sent informing residents that bottled water will be provided, upon request, to any household with members at increased risk from the nitrates, such as infants under 6 months, nursing mothers, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as identified by a health care provider.  

The district will continue the KDHE required quarterly samples and public notifications until this issue is resolved. We appreciate your patience.

Latest nitrate level test still elevated in Water District 101

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The most visible security for the Kansas State Fair may be the drone that is flying above the grounds thanks to Kansas State University, but that has worked in concert with the other measures to make this a safe fair for the over 100,000 people that attended so far from Friday, Sept. 6 to Sunday Sept. 8. 

One of the concrete barriers set up for emergencies actually got caught on a Hutchinson Fire apparatus trying to turn into the fairgrounds Monday morning for Emergency Management day at the fair. That happened around 8:45 a.m. Monday.

"It looked like they turned a little too soon, got the tire of the truck caught and they stopped it, immediately," Schulz said.&nbsp;

The drone, in particular, was a help on the first night of the Fair.

"One of the situations we were told of yesterday was where we had two medicals up in the grandstand during Wynonna," Schulz said. "We had a little child and I think, a lady, one on each side. We were able to actually get the drone so that they could tell exactly, for the paramedics, where to go. They were able to pinpoint, go up about five more rows, that's where she's sitting. Those kinds of things have helped us immensely."

Lt. David Golden also told the fair board at their meeting on Monday that they have an ongoing case regarding brandishing firearms on the fairgrounds where the cameras helped them find an abandoned weapon before anyone could pick it up and that had they not had the camera access, it could have taken them much longer to get that situation resolved.

Strong first weekend for State Fair shows off new security measures

TOPEKA&nbsp;— Today, in accordance with Executive Order #20-30, Governor Laura Kelly has directed flags throughout the State of Kansas be lowered to half-staff from sunup to sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Gov. Kelly orders flags at half-staff on Wednesday

HARVEY COUNTY — The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the woman who died in a pedestrian accident just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Harvey County.

&nbsp;According to the Patrol, Aubrie-Li C.&nbsp;Lakey, 22, Newton,&nbsp; was walking north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 135 just south of East First Street.

A southbound 2004 Dodge Durango driven by Aaron K. Dietz, 46, Wichita, struck Lakey.&nbsp; 

She was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the&nbsp;Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center. 

Dietz and two passengers in the SUV were properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP.

KHP IDs woman from Newton who died in pedestrian accident

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jon Austin, DVM with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital asks you to think of your pets and help keep them safe by spaying or neutering at your veterinarian's recommended schedule.

"There's always been more pets than there've been available people to take care of them," Austin said. "It's a function of mathematics and reproductive capability. They can just make more of themselves too fast. That's why the responsibility lies on the pet owners and just everybody to spay and neuter their pet. It's never been more important than it is right now. The shelters all across the nation are overfull and turning people away, which that's not what they want to do. I know the Hutchinson shelter has been overfull as well. They want to help those pets. They want to find homes for them. They want to keep them alive. Sadly, that's not what's happening right now. Euthanasias are up across the nation in shelters and in those kinds of facilities."

Other than breed-specific dogs with jobs like hunting or herding, there's really no need to breed.

"No one needs to be breeding right now," Austin said. "There are very few needs in terms of animals being bred. I know there'll always be purebred dogs being made and people wanting those and a market for them. The doodles in the last five years have kind of taken over the world. They're pretty wonderful. I've got a lot of those patients. I see why people are drawn to them and like them, and maybe there's a cause or a home for breeding doodles right now. But man, just go spend a minute at any animal shelter and you'll see there's just a ton of animals whose sadly their lives are never even getting started. They're having to be put to sleep because there's nobody to take them."

People who were home during the pandemic are headed back to work because of the tough economy and that is making things more difficult.

"Apparently those people now are casting off those animals or relinquishing those animals and turning them back into shelters," Austin said. "It just, you know, amazes me, blows my mind that you could take a pet, grow a relationship and love it and then surrender it. I just, I cannot imagine that. It's a lifetime choice. It's a 10 to 15 year commitment when you take a dog or a cat, you know, you kind of agree to give that animal a home for its entire life. That's certainly the way it should be and the way we like to see it."

Austin said most animal hospitals in Hutchinson can spay or neuter a young animal for a very reasonable fee, and it is much less expensive than potential reproductive problems or cancer could be.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — According to a message to Hutch Post from Pretty Prairie USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson, Pretty Prairie USD 311 will hold a beam-raising ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 101 N Maple Street in Pretty Prairie for their middle school gym expansion project.

Instead of a traditional&nbsp;groundbreaking, they are going to do a beam raising! 

Before the beam is lifted high in the air, and secured into the structure, they are going to get the signatures of all the students&nbsp;and staff on it. The Bulldogs will sign the top area of the beam- it won't be visible once it hangs in the gym, but they will know the signatures are there. The other three sides of the beam will be painted to match the ceiling.

The school will be managing this in three waves- to accommodate&nbsp;the schedules of students and staff.

Beam signing Tuesday in Pretty Prairie

RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement across Kansas continue to see more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit, despite a statewide campaign to crack down on excessive speeding.

&nbsp;On Saturday night, a trooper working the State Fair checked the speed of a Camaro on Kansas 96 in Reno County at 151 mph, according to a social media report from Trooper Chad Crittenden.

&nbsp; A pursuit ensued and the driver was eventually taken into custody. Some of the requested charges included DUI, a felony warrant and a list of other traffic violations.&nbsp; The KHP did not release the name of the driver.

Driver accused  of traveling 151 mph in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing will give the Board of County Commissioners a report on the initial season of racing thus far in hopes to get a better partnership with them for the 2025 season.

According to agenda documents, attendance figures in the grandstand have averaged over 1600, with over 300 per night on average in the pits and two race nights still to come.

The county will also look at the economic impact numbers for the races thus far.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing will give the Board of County Commissioners a report on the initial season of racing thus far in hopes to get a better partnership with them for the 2025 season.According to agenda documents, attendance figures in the grandstand have averaged over 1600, with over 300 per night on average in the pits and two race nights still to come.The county will also look at the economic impact numbers for the races thus far.The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

According to Mental Health America, research indicates that self-injury occurs in approximately 5% of adults in the United States. Rates are higher among adolescents, with approximately 17% of teens reporting some form of self-injury. Studies show an even higher risk for self-injury among college students, with rates from 17 to 35 percent.

RENO COUNTY —Three adults and a child were injured in an accident just after 8 a.m. Sunday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Buick Enclave driven by Arundhathrik R. Induri, 22, Norman, Oklahoma, was eastbound on Trail West Road at Kansas 14.

The driver failed to stop at a stop sign, entered the intersection and struck a northbound 2015 Toyota Sienna driven by Lucinda F. Miller, 33, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

After impact, the Toyota traveled off the road and struck a building on the northeast corner of the intersection.

EMS transported Miller and a passenger in the Toyota Hannah R.&nbsp;Miller, 9, Hutchinson and two passengers in the Buick Rahul&nbsp;Katayam, 24 and Keerthana&nbsp;Nampally, 25, both of Norman, Oklahoma to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;Induri was not injured.

Nampally and Katayam were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Woman and 9-year-old from Hutch injured in SUV, van crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson police caught three people after they are said to have stolen items on Saturday.

According to a release from Hutchinson Police Capt. Dayton Gates, at 4:39 p.m. Saturday, police were sent to&nbsp;Dunham’s Sports, 1500 East 11th Ave, in reference to a theft. The suspects left the area in a U-Haul box truck.

Shortly after being dispatched, Kansas Highway Patrol located and attempted to make a traffic stop on the U-Haul box truck near 15th Ave and Halstead Street. Kansas Highway Patrol initiated a vehicle pursuit after the suspect vehicle refused to pull over. 

Hutchinson Police Department assisted with the vehicle pursuit. Officers were able to successfully stop-stick the U-Haul box truck. The vehicle pursuit came to a stop in the 500 block of West 1st Ave.

The driver, Charles Bogguess, 44-year-old male from Wichita, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer x2, felony flee and elude, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of stolen property, possession of opiates, possession of stolen&nbsp;property; 2 or more convictions in 5 years, theft; property or services; less than $1,500, reckless&nbsp;driving, driving while suspended; 3rd or subsequent conviction and possession of drug&nbsp;paraphernalia.

Jamie Batres, 39-year-old female from Wichita, was arrested and charged with felony interference&nbsp;with law enforcement, possession of opiates; 2 or more prior convictions, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property and theft; property or services; less than $1,500.

Jasmine Gray, 34 year-old female from Wichita, was arrested and charged with possession of stolen&nbsp;property; less than $1,500 and theft; property or services; less than $1,500.

Kansas Highway Patrol, Reno County&nbsp;Sheriff’s Office, and South Hutchinson Police Department assisted in the pursuit.

 </figure>Hutchinson Police DepartmentHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson police caught three people after they are said to have stolen items on Saturday.According to a release from Hutchinson Police Capt. Dayton Gates, at 4:39 p.m. Saturday, police were sent to&nbsp;Dunham’s Sports, 1500 East 11th Ave, in reference to a theft. The suspects left the area in a U-Haul box truck.Shortly after being dispatched, Kansas Highway Patrol located and attempted to make a traffic stop on the U-Haul box truck near 15th Ave and Halstead Street. Kansas Highway Patrol initiated a vehicle pursuit after the suspect vehicle refused to pull over. Hutchinson Police Department assisted with the vehicle pursuit. Officers were able to successfully stop-stick the U-Haul box truck. The vehicle pursuit came to a stop in the 500 block of West 1st Ave.<figure>

 </figure>The driver, Charles Bogguess, 44-year-old male from Wichita, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer x2, felony flee and elude, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of stolen property, possession of opiates, possession of stolen&nbsp;property; 2 or more convictions in 5 years, theft; property or services; less than $1,500, reckless&nbsp;driving, driving while suspended; 3rd or subsequent conviction and possession of drug&nbsp;paraphernalia.Jamie Batres, 39-year-old female from Wichita, was arrested and charged with felony interference&nbsp;with law enforcement, possession of opiates; 2 or more prior convictions, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property and theft; property or services; less than $1,500.Jasmine Gray, 34 year-old female from Wichita, was arrested and charged with possession of stolen&nbsp;property; less than $1,500 and theft; property or services; less than $1,500.No injuries were reported. &nbsp;Kansas Highway Patrol, Reno County&nbsp;Sheriff’s Office, and South Hutchinson Police Department assisted in the pursuit.All defendants are innocent unless they are found guilty in court. Three arrested after Saturday chase

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Chronic absenteeism is an issue for every school district, but Buhler USD 313 is putting a focus on reducing that number this year.

"Chronic absenteeism, let's define what that means, it means missing 10% or more of your school days," said Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "If we're in school roughly 170-ish days, that means missing 17 or more days of school, so chronically absent is quite a bit. Pre-COVID, Buhler schools ran around 8%, that's pretty low. Since COVID, the year after COVID, 2021-22, we jumped to 32%. Then that was when we had a lot of people home sick, we understand that. That's a little bit of an anomaly, but the following year was around 22%. We really made a considerate effort last year to get it down, and we're working on it again this year. Last year it was 11.8% for Buhler schools. Our goal is to get that back below 10%. And the state average is almost 20%."

Couchman notes that you usually get better results with better measurement.&nbsp;

"We're tracking it closely," Couchman said. "We're communicating with parents. We think, you know, we even see it, I think I've talked to a lot of employers in our county and across the state, showing up to work and it's become an issue since COVID, and I think it starts by forming habits and expectations that you need to show up. That's what we're trying to communicate to our families and to our students is important that you show up to school. There's a lot of things you can do to combat that. We need to make students feel like they belong, and that's a big one. If you feel like you're gonna be missed, then I think you're more likely to show up."

When it comes to the statistics, there's nothing better than being at school.

"Chronic absenteeism is for any reason, whether you're sick, whether you're at a school activity, you're counted, that's, it counts as an absence," Couchman said. "I know when I taught calculus, it didn't matter if they were gone for an activity or they were sick, they were still gone. I still had to reteach the lesson to them. You know, when you have students that are gone, it makes the community of your classroom, it changes it. When the teacher's gone, it changes the community of the classroom. That is part of it. We obviously don't want students to show up to school if they're sick, because that actually hurts our absenteeism because it then exposes other kids to being sick, but if you are able to come to school, we want you there."

Buhler USD 313 working to keep kids in class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Board of Education will interview prospective candidates to fill the seat being vacated by Jane Gamber at the board meeting Monday night.

The board has looked through questionnaires for potential candidates and will have the opportunity to ask them questions before making a decision on the new member from the Reno Valley portion of the district.&nbsp;

The Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Board of Education meets Monday night at 7 p.m. at the district offices at 4501 West Fourth.
