HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters were called out just after 8 a.m. Monday to the report of a structure fire in the 1100 block of North Orchard. The person who called dispatch saw smoke coming from the roof vents.

When crews arrived, they saw light smoke coming from the attic vents and eaves of the home. Everyone got out safely and firefighters found an overheated electrical wire that had caused the insulation to start smoldering.&nbsp;

Once power was off, crews disconnected the wire and began pulling ceilings, then wet down the areas and the home was ventilated. The home was then checked for hot spots with a thermal imaging camera.

They don't know what overloaded the wire, but want to remind the public not to do things like plug space heaters into extension cords or other things that would draw too much current in old wiring.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education will receive the facility master plan from the Facility Steering Committee at their meeting Monday night.&nbsp;

This committee has been meeting and discussing facility options for the past 20 months. This plan will help inform the Board of Education as they discuss the potential dates and scope of a future bond issue in 2025.

This fully-furnished suite provides a short-term retreat opportunity for individuals who require some assistance with day-to-day tasks, offering access to new experiences and social interactions, and providing temporary relief for caregivers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Net Zero home produces as much electricity as it consumes.

To reach that goal, you'll need a solar system or some renewable source of energy like wind or hydro. More on solar in future articles. I would often tell my children: There are two ways to have more money, make more or spend less. Likewise there are two ways to get to Net Zero: produce more electricity or use/waste less. Let’s focus on wasting less - a useful goal for any home.

The envelope of your home refers to the exterior: the ceiling/roof, walls, basement, windows and doors. The better insulated and sealed your home is, the less heat or cool you will lose. The low hanging fruit in optimizing your envelope is insulation. While you should be concerned with all 6 sides of your home, the most significant is the attic.

Recall from your science class that heat rises and cool falls. That’s why your basement is always cool in the summer even if you don’t actively cool it - your cooled air

automatically drops through the floor or staircase to the basement. Note also that the earth is about 55 degrees year round which is why geothermal heating/cooling is so effective.

All the heat you produce will attempt to escape through your ceiling. Insulation is rated by the R value. The higher the R value, the better the barrier against loss, and therefore the more heat your house retains. You intuitively get this since you might wear a hoodie when the temperature is in the 60’s, a light jacket in the 50’s and your thickest coat with hat and mittens on the coldest winter day.

Your attic is an easy place to add insulation and will be the most bang for your buck. My Maryland house was built in 1900 and barely had 2” in the attic. When built, there was little concern for energy efficiency. Since home builders won’t be paying the heating or cooling bill, there is little motivation for them to provide an optimized envelope. The present building code is R-38 in the attic. That’s roughly 11” of insulation. If you want R- 50, that requires 17” of insulation. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, Lowes and Home Depot sell loose insulation that can be blown in. Home Depot offers a free 24 hour blower machine rental with the purchase of 10 bags. Your return on investment depends on your bills. If you blow $1,000 worth of insulation into your attic and save $1,000 in a year on heating/cooling bills, you’ve broken even in a year and will have reduced bills for as long as you own the home. I plan to go R-50 - more is better. Maybe 60.

The pink rolls of insulation at your local home improvement store are R-19 for 6 inch thick walls. The rolls for 2X4 walls are R-13. If you’re building a house, exterior walls should be at least 6” thick. It’s pretty hard to upgrade existing walls although there are companies who will drill holes in your walls and blow in more insulation.

The other component of maximizing your envelope is checking how leaky your house is.

You can have all the insulation in the world but if air blows through cracks, you’re just chasing your tail. How tight your house is can be determined by a blower door test.

A blower door test will establish how well sealed your home is. A temporary door or window is installed with a fan blowing inside air to the outside. The fan is calibrated to blow at a constant rate. Monitors are placed inside the home to measure air change per hour.

The air change per hour at 50 Pascals is the standard unit of measure and is denoted ACH50 (Air Change per Hour at 50 Pa). ACH is the number of times the volume of air in your house will blow out the fan in an hour. Less is better. Early building codes required an ACH of less than 8. Newer codes require less than 3. For a home to be certified as a passive house, it must be less than 0.6.

Having an exceptionally well sealed home has multiple advantages. Indoor air quality can be controlled to improve overall health. If you have a family member with asthma or other breathing difficulties, you will want air absent of pollen, dust or other pollutants.

You want the ability to control the humidity in your home to avoid mold or overly dry air - hard to do with a leaky house. No leaks means no insidious insects entering your home.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, you want to maintain a constant temperature, which is far more costly with drafts.

If the test discloses a number you consider too high, you have some detective work to do. If the outside temperature is significantly different than the inside temperature, you may be able to feel the temperature difference with your hand. Windows, doors, can lights and electrical outlets will be your prime suspects. An infrared camera may also disclose a disparity in temperature. Should the leaks still elude your detection, theatrical fog can be used so you can see air movement.

While essential for constructing an efficient new building, the test can be used for an existing building to identify leaks. Google “Door blower test near me”. Get yourself some caulk and plug up those drafty cracks! Paraphrasing Nancy Reagan: “Just say no to crack”.

Mike Pfeifer at Green Factor Insulation (https://www.gfipro.com/) will perform an analysis of my home including a blower door test. I’ll report back how that goes. GFI adds insulation as well. That’s roughly 11” of insulation. If you want R- 50, that requires 17” of insulation. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, Lowes and Home Depot sell loose insulation that can be blown in. Home Depot offers a free 24 hour blower machine rental with the purchase of 10 bags. Your return on investment depends on your bills. If you blow $1,000 worth of insulation into your attic and save $1,000 in a year on heating/cooling bills, you’ve broken even in a year and will have reduced bills for as long as you own the home. I plan to go R-50 - more is better. Maybe 60.The pink rolls of insulation at your local home improvement store are R-19 for 6 inch thick walls. The rolls for 2X4 walls are R-13. If you’re building a house, exterior walls should be at least 6” thick. It’s pretty hard to upgrade existing walls although there are companies who will drill holes in your walls and blow in more insulation.The other component of maximizing your envelope is checking how leaky your house is.You can have all the insulation in the world but if air blows through cracks, you’re just chasing your tail. How tight your house is can be determined by a blower door test.A blower door test will establish how well sealed your home is. A temporary door or window is installed with a fan blowing inside air to the outside. The fan is calibrated to blow at a constant rate. Monitors are placed inside the home to measure air change per hour.The air change per hour at 50 Pascals is the standard unit of measure and is denoted ACH50 (Air Change per Hour at 50 Pa). ACH is the number of times the volume of air in your house will blow out the fan in an hour. Less is better. Early building codes required an ACH of less than 8. Newer codes require less than 3. For a home to be certified as a passive house, it must be less than 0.6.Having an exceptionally well sealed home has multiple advantages. Indoor air quality can be controlled to improve overall health. If you have a family member with asthma or other breathing difficulties, you will want air absent of pollen, dust or other pollutants.You want the ability to control the humidity in your home to avoid mold or overly dry air - hard to do with a leaky house. No leaks means no insidious insects entering your home.Lastly and perhaps most importantly, you want to maintain a constant temperature, which is far more costly with drafts.If the test discloses a number you consider too high, you have some detective work to do. If the outside temperature is significantly different than the inside temperature, you may be able to feel the temperature difference with your hand. Windows, doors, can lights and electrical outlets will be your prime suspects. An infrared camera may also disclose a disparity in temperature. Should the leaks still elude your detection, theatrical fog can be used so you can see air movement.While essential for constructing an efficient new building, the test can be used for an existing building to identify leaks. Net Zero: Optimize your envelope

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The strategic planning process is continuing for Buhler USD 313.

"It's been a huge process right now," said USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "We've narrowed it down to our three themes,which is student success, culture, and resources and operations. We are developing an action plan under each one of those three themes right now."

Staff members, administration and the district site council have all weighed in on the plans.

"We will then take it to our staff at the building level and have them look at it and get input," Couchman said. "Finally it ends in the board of education's hand, hopefully in December to finalize that action plan for each one of those three themes. And this is a five-year cycle of a strategic plan."

The Hutchinson Community Foundation and the City of Hutchinson are also working on strategic planning at this same time, so it remains to be seen how the plans for all three entities will be able to interact in the coming years.

USD 313 still working on strategic planning

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With stronger Republican supermajorities in Topeka,&nbsp;Americans For Prosperity Legislative and Coalitions Director Michael Austin hopes that will make the process of tax relief smoother in the coming legislative session.

"There's a number of things that need to be done, particularly on the tax policy side," Austin said. "While it was great that we saw some tax reductions when it came to property taxes, when it came to income tax, it's clear that we need to go further. I mean, the last election really suggested that inflation and cost of living are really what's at the forefront of Kansans minds. When we come back next session, we should really make an effort to go back to trying to get a single flat rate for income tax, and then do what we can to lower property taxes as well."

Property tax relief will likely need to bubble up from the local level though, rather than being sent down from Topeka.

"I really like that idea of putting in a limit on local government spending, because that's really where the problem lies," Austin said. "You know, it's not necessarily in the appraisal values, though I'm sure you'll have listeners that disagree, but when people look at their appraisal values, what are they doing? They're looking at it and they're trying to calculate what that means in terms of taxes. So ultimately, the issue is the amount of money that is spent at that local level, not necessarily your home appraisal. It's the tax and the spending that definitely needs to have a cap put on it."

Keeping the size of government as small as possible is another goal the Republican supermajority can aim for.

"We should have a conversation about putting a spending lid within state government," Austin said. "Not to say that it can't grow at all, but let's have it grow along with the economy. Whether that is growing with GDP or growing with inflation or growing with population growth, put some sort of limit on that spending so that it only rises when the economy is doing well. That way, we could have the excess revenues to not only do further tax cuts, but make these tax cuts sustainable."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Thursday that the president does not have the legal power to fire or demote him. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss spoke about economists surprise to see Powell answer that question directly.&nbsp; 

"A lot of investors and economists expect him to sort of stay out of that political fray," Goss said. "A battle between the Federal Reserve Chairman Powell and President Trump would not be good for markets out there right now."

Goss anticipates another rate cut in December to follow the one that happened on Thursday.

"When the federal government runs a deficit and they continue to run deficits of two trillion dollars, then you tack on that an extension of the tax cuts, you're talking upward pressure on inflation," Goss said.

Another potential inflation problem could come if President-elect Trump follows through on the tariffs he has said he will put on.

"Most economists are opposed to just a blanket increase in tariffs out there," Goss said. That would put upward pressure on prices, it would be if it's not a negotiating strategy and you implement those you're going to see Retaliation and retaliation would not be good for the agricultural sector."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The finalizing of the 2025 agreement for racing at the historic half-mile at the Kansas State Fairgrounds is on the agenda for the Kansas State Fair Board at their meeting on Tuesday.

Also on the agenda is an update on the assessment from the Department of Homeland Security after several new measures were put in place for the 2024 Fair.

The Board will also go into executive session to discuss the review of General Manager Bryan Schulz.

There will also be alcohol sales authorizations for a series of events at the 1861 Club over the next several months.

The Kansas State Fair Board meets Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Kansas State Fair Administrative office and on Zoom.

WICHITA, Kan. — Bethany College recently hosted its annual Wichita-area High School Counselor Brunch at Yaya's Euro Bistro, offering nearly 25 local counselors a unique opportunity to explore the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education and career counseling. The event included a presentation by Mark McDonald, Professor of Biology at Bethany College, who led discussions on "Education &amp; Technology: AI in Education &amp; Careers," examining the complex influence of AI on today's academic landscape.

McDonald, a Bethany College faculty member since 1996 and an alumnus of the institution, drew on his extensive background in biological sciences and his active role in Bethany's AI research initiatives. His presentation gave attendees valuable insights into AI's current and future applications in college admissions, student support, and administrative efficiency. McDonald also highlighted ethical considerations, addressing AI integration's benefits and potential challenges in educational settings.

"We were delighted to bring this essential topic to the forefront at our Wichita-area brunch," shared Sabrina Wollenberg, Director of Admissions at Bethany College. "As counselors noted in our follow-up discussions, many had not realized the extent of AI's tools and applications available for education today. This gathering started meaningful conversations about how AI can shape a more supportive, effective learning environment."

Following McDonald's presentation, counselors expressed a renewed interest in AI's potential to enhance educational outcomes. "The AI presentation was amazing," one counselor shared. "I left with a new perspective on how these tools can positively impact our schools and bridge the gap between high school and college counseling." Another added, "I came in skeptical, but now I'm walking away with ideas for how AI could support students and educators."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a Thursday social media post, Malynda Jarrett is going in a different direction with her passion soon.

"I have made the decision to shift the path of Sugartime Confections," Jarrett said. "I promise my sweet journey will continue, but just not in this physical location."

Jarrett is going to re-establish her home bakery with commercial equipment and focus on getting an online order system created , so she can start shipping the Cloud 9 Cookie. 

"After I am settled, I am going to join my sweet friend in her food truck," Jarrett said.

Sugartime will stop the lunch menu on Nov. 23, so Jarrett can focus 100% on all the holiday bakery items, until the last day on Saturday, December 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sugartime Confections to close physical location

MCPHERSON, Kan. — “The Path to Pebble,” a documentary chronicling the incredible story of McPherson College’s decade-long journey to compete at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, won Best Documentary Short Film at the Grand Motoring Film Festival on October 31 at Hilton Head Island.

The film was released in August to coincide with this year’s Pebble Beach Concours and commemorate the college’s historic podium finish at the most prestigious car show in the world. In 2023, McPherson College’s 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Cabriolet – restored by students in the college’s Automotive Restoration program – secured second in class at the 72nd&nbsp;Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The victory marks the first time in Concours history that a student-restored car has ranked in the top three in class.

Legendary television host and comedian Jay Leno narrates the film, saying, “Pebble Beach is all about turning heads. And some heads were turned that day. A student entry had never placed in this elite competition.”

In its eighth year, the Grand Motoring Film Festival is North America’s only competitive automotive film festival. This year, films from nine countries and 15 states competed for top honors in multiple juried categories. A team of McPherson College students, faculty and staff also participated in the 2024 Hilton Head Island Concours with the car, earning Best in Class.

“Path To Pebble” wins at film festival

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There will be a grand opening for a new exhibit at Strataca on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 5 to 9 p.m.

"We just opened our brand new Topside Exhibit, it was the 'Twister' bus that was actually shown in the original movie," Director of Strataca, Rachel Terry said. "It's an extension of the Underground Vaults and Storage Hollywood Memorabilia Exhibit that we have underground."

The gathering will take place in the Topside Lobby at Strataca, 3650 E. Ave. G. in Hutchinson.&nbsp;The event is free and open to the public.

"Thanks to UVS and Lee Spence, they worked with Warner Bros. Studio, and they were able to get it here," Terry said. "We had to install garage doors on the front of our lobby to get it into the actual lobby. It was quite the process working with Warner Bros. Studio and UVS, but we were able to make it happen."

Terry and her staff at Strataca were amazed to see the bus in person.&nbsp;

"It's really cool," Terry said. "We do have the movie reel showing where it was part of the movie, now I think it's really cool that they have the brand new 'Twisters' movie out, as well."

There will be local storm chasers in attendance to speak, plus other fun things to do.

"We will have Lee Spence out, he is the ex-president of UV&amp;S, and he will be giving a speech," Terry said. "Then we actually have a storm chaser coming out from Wichita to give more of an in-depth of what that type of equipment would be used for and we actually will do a free screening of the new 'Twisters' movie that was just released this past summer."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024 Kansas KIDS COUNT® Data Book has been released. The publication analyzes child outcomes in economic well-being, education, and health indicators.

"We track dozens of indicators about the well-being of children and families in Kansas, and food insecurity is the one indicator that showed the most significant movement," said John Wilson with Kansas Action for Children. "We now are looking at data that shows us that every single Kansas county experienced an increase in food insecurity among kids. We went from roughly one in eight kids experiencing food insecurity to one in five, and this is a pretty drastic increase from 2021 to 2022."

Some of the reductions in federal programs post pandemic may have contributed to the issue.

"During that time, we saw cost-free school meals for every child," Wilson said. "We saw an expanded federal child tax credit that provided monthly payments as opposed to that credit at tax time, and we saw enhanced food assistance benefits during that time, so enhancements to the SNAP program, so those were all federal investments that were made to support the basic needs of people in the United States, so those ended at the same time that the data is showing that sharp increase in food insecurity, and then, of course, yes, the increased cost of groceries due to inflation played a part to that."

One policy piece that the current Kansas administration has been able to keep alive up through this past summer is Summer EBT.&nbsp;

"I appreciate the work that the governor's administration has done to keep those programs going, because we also saw last summer plenty of states that restricted the summer EBT program, and so we're really paying attention to this upcoming legislative session. It's the beginning of a new biennium, and we need to see what direction lawmakers want to take these traditional safety net programs like SNAP food assistance and child care assistance and cash assistance, all those programs that really are small ways to help families meet their basic needs."

It remains to be seen what the new legislative makeup will portend with regard to the extension or change of assistance programs for kids.

Wilson: 2022 data says kids were more food insecure

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is time to order bricks again for the 9-11 Memorial at Fire Station 7 in Hutchinson. 

If you have been wanting one, now is the time.  An order form will need to be filled out for a 4x8 or a 8x8 brick. A 4x8 brick is $25. an 8x8 is $40.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Kiwanis Chili and Soup Fest continues this weekend in Hutchinson.

"It is this Saturday, Nov. 9. It will start at 11 a.m. and go until about 1.30 p.m.," said Dana Hinshaw with Kiwanis. "We have 16 teams that we're very excited about, and there is a lot of competition between those teams. We will have ticket booths. You'll have to buy tickets and you'll get a stamp, and then that means you can participate. So there'll be a ticket booth at Avenue A Park, and there'll be a ticket booth at DCI Park."

"We have the Fire Department has challenged the Reno County Sheriff's Office as well as the City of Hutch Public Works," Hinshaw said. "We're pretty excited about that little competition. We have four banks, First National Bank, Heartland Credit Union, Dillon's Credit Union, and People's Bank and Trust. We have several folks from downtown, Anima Bella, Wildflower Boutique, Apron Strings, Family Community Theater, Gentiva Home Care and Hospice, Salt City Brewery, First Presbyterian Church, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. And then there's a couple other teams, including APAC Kansas."

&nbsp;The money from the 500 to 750 attendees goes for sampling supplies and then for Kiwanis programs.

"We provide funds, goody bags for Head Start," said Bob Ross with the club. "We adopted Graber Elementary this year for providing classroom with snacks. We do a booth at Hutch Fest. We serve with United Way breakfast whenever United Way is having their breakfast. So we cook the breakfast for them on their workday. We ring bells Salvation Army. We provide meals for Circles of Hope. We provide funds for Salvation Army and the Salt Hawk communities. We also provide scholarships to students for college and leadership opportunities."
