HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bookends, a longtime downtown Hutchinson bookstore, has announced it will close its doors after 13 years at 123 N. Main St.

In a Facebook post, owners Wes and Gwen Bartlett cited financial challenges and changing reading habits as the reason for the closure.

“Financially, we can no longer continue to supplement the store's income from our personal finances,” the post read. “Economic conditions and the increased use of technology devices to read has made it impossible to continue.”

The store will remain open until all inventory is sold. A 50% discount is being offered on books, and the owners estimate it will take three to six months to liquidate the remaining books, furniture and shelving.

Bookends was founded by the Bartletts and has served as a local hub for book lovers since opening.

Hutchinson Community Foundation is now accepting proposals for the second Impact Cycle of 2025 Fund for Reno County Grants.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Proposals should align with the following categories and purposes and maximum requests.

Proposals must come from 501(c)(3) organizations that serve Reno County. Individuals or groups that do not have a 501(c)(3) designation must obtain a nonprofit fiscal sponsor.

Impact Cycle 2 proposals should be submitted by Aug. 15 online through the Grant Lifecycle Management (GLM) system at https://hutchcf.org/nonprofitsandgrants/available-grants.&nbsp;

Community foundation grant cycle open to Reno County organizations, groups 

After years of planning, construction delays, and supply chain headaches, the new Hilton Garden Inn and Convention Center in Hutchinson is finally within sight of opening its doors.

Raju Sheth, a managing member of Amber Hotels and the developer behind the project, provided an update to the Hutchinson City Council at their meeting on Tuesday, sharing that the hotel is about 90 days away from welcoming its first guests — with a hopeful opening date in September or October.

“Finally, my elevator is here,” Sheth said, noting that while key components like the elevator have arrived, some critical items, like the hotel’s doors, remain stuck at ports. “We paid for those doors six months ago, and they’re still sitting in Los Angeles.”

Sheth said the project has faced no shortage of obstacles, from global supply chain disruptions and weather setbacks to new tariffs that unexpectedly increased costs. A severe rainstorm just weeks ago caused an estimated $15,000 in damage when high winds shattered tempered glass windows, requiring expensive replacements.

Despite the challenges, the upper floors of the 112-room hotel are nearly finished, with plumbing, cabinetry, shower doors, and other fixtures in place. Work now focuses on completing the lobby and the adjacent convention center.

Hilton requires that at least 75% of guest rooms be fully ready before any soft opening is allowed, and final inspections — including extensive technology and Wi-Fi requirements — must be passed. Sheth said that meeting those standards has added time, since they must rely on Hilton’s approved vendors.

“If it were up to me, we’d be open already,” Sheth said with a laugh. “But Hilton has their own processes, and they come at their sweet time.”

In the meantime, the hotel’s general manager has been hired, and other key positions, including an executive housekeeper and marketing staff, will be finalized soon. New hires are expected to begin onboarding in August.

Originally planned as a 100-room hotel, the project has expanded to 112 rooms, thanks in part to strong local financial support. Sheth thanked First National Bank for being a “good partner” throughout the process.

“I’m not asking anyone for money,” Sheth added. “I just want people to know the hardships we’ve gone through to get here. But it’s going to be a beautiful property and we can’t wait to open our doors to Hutchinson.”

Responsibilities:

Local Independence Day celebrations

Harvest progress continues across Kansas, with some areas moving slowly due to wet conditions while others have managed to dodge the rain and are preparing to wrap up harvest. Farmers and custom harvesters are adapting to challenges to keep things moving.

Shane Eck with the Pawnee County Coop Association in Larned reports that harvest is 75% to 85% complete in their region. Harvest conditions have been mostly favorable as they have missed most of the heavy rain events but had some scattered rains.

Yields are ranging from 20 to 60 bushels per acre, which is, for the most part, an improvement over the drought-stricken crops of the past two years. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Chevy Cruz driven by Robert W. Cooper, 77, Haven was&nbsp;eastbound on Arlington Road. The driver failed to yield at a posted stop sign at Kansas 96.&nbsp; The Chevy struck a southeast bound 2014 Ford Taurus driven by Jonathan E&nbsp;Lane, 58, Hutchinson, on the driver side. After impact both&nbsp;vehicles came to rest in the center crossover.

After just one month on the job, Graham Klemme, the new Executive Director of StartUp Hutch, is already laying out ambitious plans to expand the local entrepreneurial ecosystem in Reno County and beyond.

In a recent interview on BW Radio, Klemme shared his excitement about moving to Hutchinson and how the community’s warm welcome has set the tone for what he hopes will be a new era of collaboration and growth.

“Everyone’s been incredibly welcoming and supportive,” Klemme said. “This is the kind of work I love to do, and to have a community where everyone’s aligned, working together to make things happen — it’s a real blessing.”

Originally from Iowa City, Iowa, Klemme’s path to Hutchinson has taken him coast to coast. With a background that spans grassroots political organizing, tech policy at companies like Airbnb and Fiverr, and a stint running a national accelerator program, he brings a diverse set of skills and connections to the role.

At StartUp Hutch, Klemme oversees the organization’s day-to-day operations and works closely with the board of directors and one full-time staff member. Together, they help local businesses and entrepreneurs access resources — including gap financing loans up to $50,000 through partnerships with Network Kansas — and programs designed to help new ventures launch and grow.

But Klemme is eager to do more than maintain the status quo. His vision includes building stronger ties with Hutchinson Community College to engage students and faculty, and exploring ways to reach new groups who may not see themselves as entrepreneurs yet — such as artists and creatives.

“We’d like to partner with the art center to help artists learn business skills,” Klemme explained. “There are so many people who are inherently entrepreneurial and just need a little support to turn ideas into sustainable businesses.”

One major focus is reviving and expanding the youth entrepreneurship program. Klemme wants to see 20 to 50 teams participate in the annual Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, hosted in partnership with local schools and the state program.

“If we want to think about where Reno County is 50 years from now, we need to make sure this next generation is prepared to start and scale businesses that will have an economic impact,” he said.

Klemme is also taking StartUp Hutch’s mission on the road — literally. He plans to visit surrounding communities like Pretty Prairie, Buhler, and Nickerson, setting up “pop-up entrepreneurship labs” at local events to connect with residents and offer resources.

Collaboration with the broader region is key too. Klemme will speak at Wichita’s 1 Million Cups event later this month to help put Hutchinson on the map and strengthen partnerships with organizations like the South Central Kansas Economic Development District and Nexus.

Looking ahead, Klemme wants to bring new resources to StartUp Hutch, including micro-grants to help entrepreneurs test ideas and grow their businesses. He’s also working to diversify the organization’s funding base and deepen its role in the Reno County Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Partnership, a coalition focused on aligning local economic development efforts.

His message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: come see what StartUp Hutch can do for you.

It’s been an unusually wet June across central Kansas, with rainfall totals far surpassing average levels for the month.

According to recent data, Hutchinson recorded 8.54 inches of rain in June — more than double its normal monthly average of 4.2 inches. Newton received 9.76 inches compared to its usual 5.2 inches, while McPherson saw an even higher total of 10.23 inches, far above its typical 4.75 inches for the month.

The 8.54 inches of rain for Hutchinson makes it the fifth wettest June on record.  The wettest?  June of 1948 where 11.83 inches of rain fell.&nbsp;

The heavy rainfall has had a noticeable impact on Cheney Lake, as the water level rose by nearly six feet over the past month, increasing from 1,415.99 feet on June 1 to 1,421.9 feet as of this morning. The lake’s conservation pool is now 97.6% full, providing a significant boost to water supply heading into the summer months.

Demolition work began on Monday at the site of Steffens Auto Parts , the local business that was destroyed by a natural gas explosion earlier this year.

Owner Darrin Clifford told Hutch Post that while the clean-up brings some relief, the road ahead is still uncertain. “I’m still dealing with the insurance, but this is a step forward,” Clifford said. He added that no plans have been determined yet for what will come next for the property.

Steffens Auto Parts was devastated by an explosion on Feb. 22, which investigators say was caused by a leak at a girth weld on a natural gas line. The blast leveled the business and left behind questions that will take time to resolve as Clifford works through the recovery process.

For now, the demolition clears away the visible reminder of the tragedy, but the future of the site — and the business — remains to be seen.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man whose life has been defined by service, to his country, his community, and his fellow veterans, will lead this year’s Eagle Media Patriots Parade in downtown Hutchinson on Friday, July 4. 

Lowell Downey, a U.S. Air Force veteran and longtime advocate for the Kansas Honor Flight program, has been named Grand Marshal for the Independence Day celebration.

“I am looking forward to it,” Downey said. “Both my wife and I are excited about it.”

Downey has called Hutchinson home since 1987. Today, he resides at The Wesley retirement community, where he received the call with the invitation to serve as Grand Marshal.

“Our director of marketing at The Wesley gave me a call and asked if I would do it,” he said. “I’ve lived in Hutch a long time, I’m pretty much a permanent resident, so it means a lot to be part of something like this.”

Downey is best known for his work with the Kansas Honor Flight program, which has taken more than 4,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built in their honor. He helped found the Hutchinson-based chapter in 2012 after discovering financial mismanagement at a previous organization. Since then, he’s become the central organizer of the local flight program, handling everything from veteran applications to trip logistics and fundraising.

To date, Kansas Honor Flight has completed 103 flights. Downey has personally attended 34 of them.

“It’s very rewarding,” Downey said. “When we started, we took World War II veterans, many of whom had never flown before. To watch them see the memorials for the first time was incredibly emotional.”

He recalled trips to the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where veterans stood in awe of the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

“Some of the veterans would say, ‘That airplane probably saved my life,’ because they were scheduled to be part of the invasion of Japan,” he said.

Today, the Honor Flight focus has shifted to Vietnam veterans, many of whom were never properly welcomed home.

“Vietnam veterans were treated terribly when they returned,” Downey said. “They didn’t get closure. Taking them to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, letting them see the names on the wall, it brings that closure. You can see the emotion. It’s powerful.”

Downey served in the U.S. Air Force and later in the Air National Guard during the early 1960s, between the Korean and Vietnam wars. His service kept him stateside, where he worked as a machinist and aircraft maintenance specialist in Nebraska and Iowa.

“I met a lot of good people,” Downey said. “We just worked hard to keep airplanes flying.”

Downey’s leadership extends beyond military service. After spending 27 years in the fertilizer industry, he joined Collingwood Grain in Hutchinson in 1987. He was named president of the company following its acquisition by Archer Daniels Midland Corporation, serving in that role for 13 years until retiring at the end of 2002.

Following his official retirement, he continued working as a fertilizer broker and later consulted on a proposed fertilizer plant in Idaho.

Even in retirement, Downey remained devoted to service. He and his first wife were early volunteers for Kansas Honor Flight, serving as guardians on several of the organization’s earliest trips. After his wife passed away in 2017, Downey eventually moved into a duplex at The Wesley, where a new chapter of life quietly began.

“There was this charming lady who lived on the other side,” he said. “She brought me cookies from time to time. Long story short, we were married in 2019 and have been married six years. She’s been on one flight with me.”

Today, Downey helps coordinate four honor flights each year, now via chartered aircraft. Each flight includes around 100 veterans and a carefully planned support team, with stops at Arlington National Cemetery, the war memorials on the National Mall, and various museums.

“It takes a lot of planning, but it’s worth every second,” Downey said. “These trips change people’s lives.”

The Patriots Parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4, in downtown Hutchinson. For Downey, leading the celebration is a reflection not only of his military and professional achievements, but of a lifetime spent giving back to the community he now calls home.

Today, he resides at The Wesley retirement community, where he received the call with the invitation to serve as Grand Marshal.“Our director of marketing at The Wesley gave me a call and asked if I would do it,” he said. “I’ve lived in Hutch a long time, I’m pretty much a permanent resident, so it means a lot to be part of something like this.”Downey is best known for his work with the Kansas Honor Flight program, which has taken more than 4,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built in their honor. He helped found the Hutchinson-based chapter in 2012 after discovering financial mismanagement at a previous organization. Since then, he’s become the central organizer of the local flight program, handling everything from veteran applications to trip logistics and fundraising.To date, Kansas Honor Flight has completed 103 flights. Downey has personally attended 34 of them.“It’s very rewarding,” Downey said. “When we started, we took World War II veterans, many of whom had never flown before. Four local agencies that provide substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment services are slated to receive more than $84,000 in 2026 under recommendations included in the Hutchinson City Council’s consent agenda.

State law requires cities to spend one-third of their liquor drink tax revenue on programs addressing alcoholism and drug abuse. A small committee reviews applications from local organizations and recommends funding allocations each year.

The proposed awards for 2026 include $10,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters, which helps at-risk children ages 5 to 17 avoid drugs and alcohol through one-on-one mentoring relationships with screened volunteers.

The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson would receive $22,500 to continue its Positive Action program, which serves more than 1,000 youth ages 6 to 18 each year. The program focuses on character and leadership development, health and life skills, and proven prevention strategies.

Rise Up Reno, which targets students in grades 6 through 12 with mentoring, substance use prevention, and family leadership programs, would receive $26,500 to help cover administrative expenses not fully covered by grants.

The Reno County Drug Court program is recommended to receive $25,500. The program provides intensive supervision and treatment alternatives for offenders with substance abuse problems, with support from a multi-agency team. Funds will help cover the cost of a defense attorney, training, and incentives for participants who make positive choices.

According to documents in the agenda, the City estimates it will have about $451,865 in its Special Alcohol Program Fund for 2026, with an anticipated ending balance of more than $367,000 after the awards and other expenditures.

City staff recommended funding each agency at its full requested amount, citing their use of proven, research-based methods and collaborative efforts to deliver wrap-around services to the community.

The Hutchinson City Council is expected to approve the recommendations as part of its consent agenda. The meeting begins tonight at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fox Theatre to release 2025-2026 Live Season on July 1

This is day 6 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest continues across Kansas, with the USDA reporting it halfway complete, behind last year but close to the five-year average. Farmers are still seeing the effects of heavy rainfall, with muddy fields and delayed progress in several areas. Despite the setbacks, farmers across the state continue to make progress as June comes to an end.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 53 percent complete, well behind 76 percent complete last year but near 56 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 29, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated 24 percent poor to very poor, 28 percent fair and 48 percent good to excellent.

In south central Kansas and north along the I-135 corridor, excessive rainfall on mature wheat has made harvest difficult. As fields start to dry out and combines cut around mud holes, some localized quality issues are being reported.

In Edwards County, farmer Danny Hattrup started cutting around June 17 and is now about two-thirds of the way through harvest. He’s hoping to wrap things up within the next week. Progress has been slowed by rain delays and lingering muddy spots, which have made fieldwork more complicated than usual.&nbsp;

On Monday, the field Hattrup was cutting was yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with a test weight a little below an average year, around 59 pounds per bushel. Hattrup planted two different wheat varieties this season, and both are performing about the same so far.&nbsp;

This past weekend, harvest became a true team effort with help from his daughters, Brooke and Shelby and his son-in-law Cole, all pitching in to keep things moving.

Harvest is underway in Scott County, where Brinlee McNary, grain merchandiser for the Scott Coop, reported they took in their first load on June 20. She said timely spring rains helped the wheat significantly in the area, contributing to a strong start. The elevator has received about 40 percent of its expected volume so far.

Yields have been highly variable, ranging from 40 to 80 bushels per acre, but McNary noted yields are a little higher than in an average year. Protein levels have ranged from 7 to 15 percent, with the average coming in just under 12 percent.

McNary said the main challenges of this harvest have been the wet conditions and the presence of wheat streak mosaic virus, which has affected some fields in the area.
