Three day weather outlook 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local audiences will get a chance to see fairy tale creatures, catchy songs and a lot of heart when Shrek Jr. hits the stage next week at Family Community Theatre.

The youth production opens Thursday, July 17, and runs through Sunday, July 20, with five performances. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, and matinees at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The musical adaptation is based on the popular animated film and tells the story of an unlikely hero who proves that courage and kindness come in all shapes and sizes.

“One of the big themes of Shrek Jr. is that heroes don’t always look like you expect,” said Craig Williams. “Tolerance is another important message — it’s about embracing differences and finding common ground.”

The cast features 33 local youth actors, ages 7 to 17, from Hutchinson and surrounding communities, including South Hutchinson, Sterling and Nickerson. Thirteen schools are represented in the production.

“This is a great opportunity for our young people to have center stage,” the spokesperson said. “It also brings kids together from different towns and school districts who might never get to meet otherwise.”

Tickets for Shrek Jr. are available at Bookends Bookstore, Absolutely Home and online at familycommunitytheatre.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door up to an hour before showtime.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new sensory-friendly theater experience is coming to Hutchinson this month, offering children with sensory sensitivities an opportunity to enjoy live performances in a setting designed just for them.

Family Community Theatre is presenting Soft Light Theatre, funded through the Hutchinson Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy program, is a partnership between the Reno County Educational Cooperative and Clothed in Compassion Corporation. The project aims to create an accessible environment for children who often struggle with the bright lights, loud sounds and bustling atmosphere of traditional theater settings.

Their first performance, Stone Soup, will be held July 12 at the Gallery Theatre inside Stringer Fine Arts Center. Elaine Lauder will direct the show, with support from volunteers trained to accommodate audience needs.

“This is all about meeting youngsters where they are,” said Craig Williams of the Family Community Theatre. “Lighting will be softer, sound levels lower, and we’ll have quiet areas available if someone needs a break. Even snacks and activities have been chosen with their specific sensory needs in mind.”

Williams said the project not only provides a positive experience for families but also allows young actors to expand their craft in a unique setting.

The Hutchinson Zoo is preparing to open a newly upgraded ocelot habitat this summer, part of ongoing improvements funded through donations and community support.

Gail Malaby, resource development coordinator for the zoo, said crews hope to have the new ocelot space ready by the end of July. The exhibit will house a designated breeding pair, with the goal of helping to bolster the endangered species’ population.

“We’re really excited about getting these guys into their new home and hopefully having some ocelot cubs to share with our partners in Texas who work in endangered species conservation,” Malaby said.

The Hutchinson Zoo, located in Carey Park, operates as a donation-based facility under the city’s parks department and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It remains free and open to the public year-round, but relies heavily on memberships, sponsorships and special events to cover operating costs.

One such event — Fairy Tales Family Night — is set for Friday evening. Now in its fourth year, the event is organized by the Friends of the Hutchinson Zoo, the nonprofit arm of the facility.

Families are invited to enjoy bounce houses, games, keeper chats, train rides on the Prairie Thunder Railroad and photo opportunities with fairy tale characters. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m.

Admission is $10 per person, but families can take advantage of a “buy three, get one free” deal. Food is also available for an additional $5, which includes a hamburger or hot dog, chips, cookie and drink.

“It’s one of our biggest family events of the year,” Malaby said. “It’s just a great way to spend quality time together, support the zoo and make some fun memories along the way.”

Memberships to the zoo are also available and include benefits at other AZA-accredited zoos nationwide.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Zenda public water supply system located in Kingman County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on July 8, 2025 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

The Reno County Board of County Commissioners will meet Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse with a packed agenda that highlights public safety, community partnerships, and neighborhood revitalization.

Among the items is a presentation by the Kansas State Fair seeking support for a new Emergency Operations Command Center (ECC) to be located at the corner of Poplar and Main — the site of the old Hutchinson Fire Station. The proposed $4.2 to $4.5 million facility would serve multiple roles, including acting as the primary hub for emergency services during the annual Kansas State Fair, which draws more than 330,000 visitors each year.

Beyond the Fair, the ECC would also provide year-round operations for the Kansas Highway Patrol, freeing up space in the Fair Administration Building, and serve as a backup emergency operations site for major regional incidents such as severe weather or mass casualty events. The project also aligns with broader security efforts to harden “soft targets” like the Fairgrounds, which the Department of Homeland Security has identified as vulnerable public venues.

The Fairgrounds has contracted local architect Sarah Sipe of Landmark Architects for the design and is working to secure state, federal, and other funding partners to help offset the total cost.

Also on the agenda Wednesday is an invitation from the Reno County 4-H Ambassadors, encouraging commissioners and the community to attend the upcoming Reno County Fair.

The agenda also includes the inspection and approval for the new Station 2 EMS building.&nbsp; The EMS post is moving to 211 West Second Street.&nbsp; The location is just west of Fifth Street and Adams.&nbsp; One completed, the current location for post two will be remodeled and used by the Reno County Health Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commissioners will also consider approving an interlocal Neighborhood Revitalization Plan (NRP) agreement with Kingman County. The plan would apply to Fire District 1, which spans both counties, and would cover commercial properties only. Qualifying improvements that increase property taxes could result in a refund of the difference between the original and increased tax amount.

The meeting will also include a report from County Administrator Randy Partington with updates on monthly department activities.

HARVEY COUNTY —Police in the Harvey County community of Hesston are reminding the public not to shoot dogs and cats with a BB gun/

In a social media post on Monday, police wrote, "really shouldn’t have to post this.  But here it goes.  You shouldn’t shoot dogs or cats with BB guns, or anything for that matter."

 As a reminder discharge of a BB Gun in the City Limits is a Class C Misdemeanor, section 10.6 of the UPOC.  Cruelty to Animals is either a Class A misdemeanor , Section 11.1 or a Felony K.S.A. 21-6412."

"If you have a problem with an animal in town, especially cats or dogs, the Police Department has live traps that you can catch the offenders with and take them to the Vet at no cost to you."

"The Hesston Police Department contracts with the Hesston Vet to act as our kennel for animals picked up.  Also allowing your pet to run at large off of your property is also in violation of City of Hesston code 2-117. This includes cats and dogs."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community Foundation is continuing its focus on housing, community development and leadership as it opens applications for the second Impact Cycle of its 2025 Fund for Reno County grants.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource to meet the evolving needs for the area. Grants are designed to support projects that reflect innovation, collaboration, critical need, or opportunities that leverage local resources to benefit the broader community.

Proposals must align with one of two priority categories:

Applications must come from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve Reno County. Individuals or groups without nonprofit status must apply through a qualified fiscal sponsor.

Proposals are due by Aug. 15 and must be submitted online through the Foundation’s Grant Lifecycle Management system, available at hutchcf.org/nonprofitsandgrants/available-grants. Questions can be directed to Program Officer Sarah Blake at <a href="mailto:sarah@hutchcf.org">sarah@hutchcf.org</a> or by calling 620-663-5293.

The grant program is part of the Foundation’s broader strategy to address key community issues, including housing and blight. One of its signature efforts this year is a leadership cohort focused on housing access for vulnerable populations, a growing concern in Reno County and across rural Kansas. The cohort brings together 17 participants from across sectors to engage in training, collaboration and long-term planning.

“Housing is a complex issue,” said Kari Mailloux, director of strategy. “There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but we believe that bringing diverse voices to the table is how real progress begins.”

The Foundation launched its “Love Where You Live” empowerment campaign last year to better understand community needs. Feedback from residents helped shape current funding priorities, including a stronger focus on workforce and economic development.

“We want to help people go from wanting change to taking action,” Mailloux said. “Our grants are one way to help unlock that potential.”

Blake, who manages the Foundation’s grant and scholarship programs, said the grant process is intentionally designed to be accessible.

“We encourage organizations to contact us early,” she said. “We’re happy to walk applicants through the process and help them shape their proposals before they submit.”

The Hutchinson Community Foundation, established in 1989, manages more than 400 funds and serves as a hub for charitable giving in Reno County. It also offers free estate planning consultations through attorney John Griffin of Stewardship Counseling LLC and accepts a variety of charitable gifts, including non-cash assets.

One of the Foundation’s most visible efforts, Match Day, is held every four years to boost endowments for local nonprofits. The next Match Day is scheduled for 2028.

This is day 9 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat farmers have been facing a challenging wheat harvest due to persistent rains on mature wheat. While test weights have suffered because of this, the 2025 crop has shown stronger yields than the past three drought-stricken years.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 82 percent complete, behind 90 percent complete last year but ahead of 77 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending July 6, 2025.&nbsp;

Josh Debes, a wheat farmer in northern Barton County, is among those still navigating the final stretch of harvest. Rainfall over the past week has forced Debes to chase dry fields across the county in hopes of finishing before another rain delay sets in. His wheat crop, already stressed by drought and a high incidence of wheat streak mosaic virus, is now facing quality declines due to the rain.

“We started with test weights at 60 pounds per bushel on our better fields,” Debes said. “But test weights have dropped since the wheat has been rained on.” Equally stressful has been a constant stream of equipment breakdowns that have kept one or both combines out of fields when Mother Nature has opened up a window for cutting.

Despite the setbacks, Debes expects to harvest&nbsp;more bushels this year than in either of the past two years, when extreme drought nearly wiped out his wheat entirely. “Morale is low, but at least we’ve got bushels to sell to cover the costs of getting this fall’s sorghum crop in the ground,” he added.

Jeff Boyd, CEO of Garden City Coop, reported that wheat harvest in their trade territory is 90 to 95 percent complete. Rains over the holiday weekend have slowed progress, and it may be another two days before combines can roll again in Finney County. Recent storms have also caused lodging in some fields.&nbsp;

Harvest began June 14 at their Hooker, Oklahoma, location. Boyd noted that test weights are averaging around 59 pounds per bushel, and protein levels are coming in at 11.8 percent. Overall, Boyd expects an average to above-average crop in terms of total bushels, with quality landing around average. Yields have ranged widely from the 30s to the 80s, with some of the strongest wheat coming from Finney and Lane counties. Yields have tended to decrease further north. The wheat streak mosaic virus complex has impacted yields and test weights in certain areas, while unusually high humidity has caused threshing issues with some varieties.

In Atchison County, Jay Armstrong wrapped up his Soft Red Winter wheat harvest on July 2 with a farm-wide average of 119 bushels per acre. Only 4.2% of wheat grown in Kansas is SRW, according to USDA/NASS’s winter wheat variety survey for 2025. While Armstrong reported good — but not exceptional — quality and test weights, the biggest challenge this season was getting the crop out between frequent rain delays. His harvested acres have already been planted to doublecrop soybeans.

Kansas Wheat: Harvest report day nine

Instead of dressing up and heading out for an evening gala, The Mary Magdalene House is asking supporters to stay home this month — all to help families who feel alone in the fight against mental illness, addiction and trauma.

The faith-based mission in Hutchinson is hosting a “stay-at-home” event on July 15. The concept is simple: families can skip the fancy clothes and the babysitter and spend the night together — all while making a donation to the nonprofit’s work.

“We know how valuable family time is, especially for families who are already facing challenges,” said Annette Van Bruggen, co-founder of The Mary Magdalene House. “So instead of asking people to come out for one more thing, we’re telling them: don’t leave your couch.”

Anyone who donates $50 or more by Aug. 1 will be entered into a drawing for six months of free jam from the ministry’s unique “jam ministry” — a nod to the group’s tradition of gathering people in the kitchen to talk and heal while stirring up homemade preserves.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Students from Buhler and Lyons high schools are among 43 students statewide to earn the 2025 Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies Certificate, awarded by the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

20 students from Buhler High School and four from Lyons High School received the distinction, which recognizes excellence in agricultural education, leadership, and career readiness. Students completed a rigorous program that includes classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE), and active participation in FFA. A minimum 2.5 GPA across all coursework is also required.

Buhler's honorees include Eliza Aldrich, Cassidy Banning, Ethan Barrett, Aivlynn Ehmke, Gage Elliott, Kyler Gillespie, Will Hanen, Brayden Henry, Payton Huffman, Brayden Leiker, Rachael Mourn, Madelyn Poepperling, Maecy Rosenberger, Ella Sanborn, Logan Schmidt, Scott Schweizer, Juliette Shank, Logan Snyder, Talon Sullivant and Jake Winters.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — BFO Bids, the fast-growing online auction company founded by Justin and Lauren Bright, has officially opened its new home at 2 North Main Street in downtown Hutchinson. The move marks a major expansion for the local business and sets the stage for the launch of a new companion retail platform, BFO2GO.

The new facility opened July 1 and offers significantly more space for inventory processing, customer pickups and daily operations. The 2 North Main location will serve as the central hub for both BFOBIDS.com, its established online auction marketplace, and the soon-to-launch BFO2GO retail store, which will feature online shopping with same-day pickup and nationwide shipping.

“This move is a huge milestone for us,” Justin Bright said. “We’ve outgrown every space we’ve had faster than expected, and this new building finally gives us the room to grow, not just in what we do now, but in what we’re building toward.”

BFO Bids began in early 2023 out of a small warehouse in Buhler, Kansas. Since then, it has grown rapidly, operating out of the Hutchinson Mall and later 405 North Main before relocating downtown. Along the way, the Brights have developed a hybrid business model that combines online auctions with in-person pickup and community partnerships.

“BFOBIDS.com will always be the foundation of what we do,” Bright said. “We’ve expanded it to include liquidation from major retailers like Amazon and Target, estate sales, business inventory reduction, vehicles, large equipment, even charity fundraisers.”

With the upcoming launch of BFO2GO, the Brights are expanding into online retail with a model designed for convenience and value.

“Think of it like Walmart.com, but with a BFO twist,” Bright said. “You’ll be able to shop online for brand-new products, have them shipped anywhere in the U.S., or pick them up the same day right here in Hutch.”

The 2 North Main building will also undergo aesthetic upgrades, including new signage and interior improvements. Despite some construction still underway, the facility is already open for customer pickups and operational needs.

“There just aren’t many large, affordable commercial buildings in Hutchinson that aren’t tied up in corporate leases,” Bright said. “When this location became available, we knew it was the right fit. It allows us to bring our auction and retail operations together under one roof.”

In addition to selling its own inventory, BFO also partners with independent vendors, offering them a platform to reach a broader customer base without the costs of maintaining a physical storefront. BFO handles customer service and pickup logistics on their behalf.

“This gives small businesses a chance to start selling online without needing loans or huge upfront costs,” Bright said. “It’s the kind of thing I wish had existed when we started. Now we’re able to offer that opportunity to others.”

Bright credited the company’s rapid growth to community support, especially from the Buhler area, where he and Lauren still live.

“We wouldn’t be here without the early support we got in Buhler,” he said. “People jumped in from day one, and that gave us the boost we needed to get started.”

BFO Bids opens expanded downtown Hutchinson location

When Abby Linton stands on the podium, baton in hand, she’s not just leading a new generation of performers — she’s carrying forward a legacy that stretches back more than four decades.&nbsp;

Linton, from Maize,&nbsp;grew up surrounded by the thunder and brass of drum corps life. Her father, Pat James, marched with the Geneseo Knights in the 1980s — a highlight of his youth and something he spoke about with reverence. For Linton, who spent her childhood at drum corps shows, the dream of marching always lingered just out of reach.&nbsp;

“I always played a woodwind instrument, so I couldn’t really march in a traditional corps,” he said. “But when my dad was recruited to help start the Sky Ryders back up about a year ago, I was always watching from the sidelines.”&nbsp;

Then, last December, when her father passed away — and any doubts about whether he’d take up the mantle vanished.&nbsp;

“After he passed, I knew I had to be part of this,” Linton said. “It was a way to honor his dream and the love he had for the activity.”&nbsp;

Now, as drum major of the newly revived Sky Ryders — a corps returning after nearly 30 years away — she&nbsp;has discovered that leading from the front is more than just calling tempo changes.&nbsp;

“Being a drum major is a lot more than just waving my hands on a podium,” she said. “I help set the culture. It’s my job to make sure everyone feels welcome, respected, and ready to give it their all. We’re building something brand new here, so how we treat each other really matters.”&nbsp;

And the Sky Ryders are attracting young performers ready to carry the dream forward.&nbsp;

Fourteen-year-old Desiree Keel is the youngest member on the field this season — and almost didn’t make the cut.&nbsp;

Keel says it was her band teacher who first told her about the Sky Ryders — and the story stuck.&nbsp;

“My band teacher marched here, and he told me about it,” she said. “I thought this would take me to the next level in band.”&nbsp;

Keel was just 13 when she attended her audition camp, but she made the age limit by the skin of her teeth — turning 14 just in time. Now she’s two weeks into the season and learning that the drum corps is an entirely different world.&nbsp;

“It’s a lot of work,” she said, “but it’s so much fun too. It’s really worth it.”&nbsp;

Fifteen-year-old Aiden Brinkley, from Nickerson High School agrees. He heard about the Sky Ryders from his dad, a middle school band director.&nbsp;

“At high school, we practice for maybe an hour,” he said. “Here, it’s four-hour blocks — back-to-back, every day. But it’s fun, and I’m learning so much.”&nbsp;

For 16-year-old Liam Ford, who traveled from Dallas to join, the drive is rooted in family too. His dad briefly marched in the drum corps in 1989 and has always been his biggest fan.&nbsp;

“My passion for music really came from him,” Liam said. “I’ve followed DCI for years, so when I heard they were bringing this back, I knew I wanted to do it.”&nbsp;

Unlike the big touring corps, Sky Ryders’ SoundSport program has created a home for high school-age performers to dip their toes into the art form early — and maybe dream bigger for the future.&nbsp;

“This is a great early experience,” Liam said. “I definitely want to keep doing this. It’s like a first step.”&nbsp;

For drum major Linton, every step — every note, every count — is a tribute to the man who first showed him the magic of a corps under the lights.&nbsp;

'Keeping the beat alive’: Young musicians bring Sky Ryders back to life

After buying way more snacks than we needed, we found our seats just in time for the National Anthem. I reminded him to remove his hat and place it over his heart.

As the anthem ended and the crowd cheered, he turned to me and asked, “Why do we say that?”

As a parent, you get flooded with questions. But this was one I was excited to answer. Who wouldn’t want to share a story of our founders’ grit, resilience, and the struggle for freedom?

I leaned toward him and asked, “Do you know the story of Francis Scott Key, Fort McHenry, and the War of 1812?”

I explained that in 1812, even though America had won its independence 29 years earlier, the British were still being bullies. They were back—and angry. After burning down Washington, D.C., the British turned their sights to attack every major port in America starting with Baltimore. The only thing standing in their way was a coastal stronghold called Fort McHenry.

By this point, my son’s gaze had wandered to the man selling cotton candy. I knew I was losing him. But, like the defenders at Fort McHenry, I wasn’t about to give up.

I told him about an American doctor named William Beanes, who had been captured by the British. A lawyer and poet named Francis Scott Key set sail on a daring mission to rescue him.

I explained that Key took a boat to meet with a British admiral to negotiate Beanes’ release. The admiral agreed, but with one condition: he believed Key knew too much about the British plans to seize Baltimore, so he refused to release him until after the British navy destroyed it.

I knew my son felt I was rambling, but I knew he needed to understand that Fort McHenry had a massive rampart, or wall, around it. A little over one thousand defenders sat ready to protect it and Baltimore. Behind the ramparts flew an enormous American flag, flying high enough so the British would see it.

Of course, this was no concern for the British—they had the greatest navy in the world!

As twilight’s last gleaming fell, over 5,000 British soldiers and a fleet of 19 ships unleashed an attack on Fort McHenry. For 25 hours, in the rain and fog, the British laid siege to the fort, firing 1,500 to 1,800 cannonballs.

I felt that if my son understood this was one of the longest bombardments in North American history, with the fate of the city—and perhaps the nation—at stake, I might finally be more interesting than the fry guy.

I continued, explaining that on that dark and stormy night, the only thing Key could see was the bombs bursting in air. The only glimpse of the fort’s ramparts came through the rockets’ red glare.

And all Key could think about was the British admiral’s words—if the flag had fallen through the night, so would the fort, the city, and the nation.

By dawn’s early light, the guns grew silent. Key had no idea what had happened through the perilous fight. He needed proof of what happened through the night. So, he aimed his spyglass at the ramparts.

As the sun finally broke through the clouds above the ramparts—there it stood—the flag was still there!

Torn, tattered, and damaged, yet it waved. Key could see the broad stripes and bright stars gallantly streaming. That star-spangled banner yet waved!

“And the British left! Key and Beanes were released!” I exclaimed to my son. “And that is why we sing the National Anthem. It’s a symbol of resilience. We fight for and are the land of the free!”

Lost in the story, I finally looked down. Expecting a look of pride, maybe even goosebumps. Instead, I saw a look of confusion.

“Dad, I know that! I was asking why we say ‘Chiefs’ instead of ‘Brave’ at the end.”

A lawyer and poet named Francis Scott Key set sail on a daring mission to rescue him.I explained that Key took a boat to meet with a British admiral to negotiate Beanes’ release. The admiral agreed, but with one condition: he believed Key knew too much about the British plans to seize Baltimore, so he refused to release him until after the British navy destroyed it.I knew my son felt I was rambling, but I knew he needed to understand that Fort McHenry had a massive rampart, or wall, around it. A little over one thousand defenders sat ready to protect it and Baltimore. Behind the ramparts flew an enormous American flag, flying high enough so the British would see it.Of course, this was no concern for the British—they had the greatest navy in the world!On September 12, 1814, the battle began.As twilight’s last gleaming fell, over 5,000 British soldiers and a fleet of 19 ships unleashed an attack on Fort McHenry. For 25 hours, in the rain and fog, the British laid siege to the fort, firing 1,500 to 1,800 cannonballs.I felt that if my son understood this was one of the longest bombardments in North American history, with the fate of the city—and perhaps the nation—at stake, I might finally be more interesting than the fry guy.I continued, explaining that on that dark and stormy night, the only thing Key could see was the bombs bursting in air. The only glimpse of the fort’s ramparts came through the rockets’ red glare.And all Key could think about was the British admiral’s words—if the flag had fallen through the night, so would the fort, the city, and the nation.By dawn’s early light, the guns grew silent. Key had no idea what had happened through the perilous fight. He needed proof of what happened through the night. So, he aimed his spyglass at the ramparts.As the sun finally broke through the clouds above the ramparts—there it stood—the flag was still there!Torn, tattered, and damaged, yet it waved. Key could see the broad stripes and bright stars gallantly streaming. That star-spangled banner yet waved!“And the British left! Key and Beanes were released!” I exclaimed to my son. “And that is why we sing the National Anthem. It’s a symbol of resilience. We fight for and are the land of the free!”Lost in the story, I finally looked down. Expecting a look of pride, maybe even goosebumps. Instead, I saw a look of confusion.“Dad, I know that!
