Buhler USD 313 is preparing for implementation of a recently passed Kansas school cell phone policy bill that will restrict student access to personal electronic devices during the school day.
Buhler Superintendent Cindy Couchman said the policy prohibits student access to cell phones from the beginning to the end of the school day, including during lunch and passing periods. Devices would also need to be stored in a way that makes them completely inaccessible.
“It’s more extensive than just saying you can’t have your cell phone at school,” Couchman said, noting the policy also applies to smartwatches, earbuds and other communication devices.
District leaders are now working through the logistical challenges of compliance, including how to securely store devices for hundreds of students and return them efficiently at the end of the day.
Among the options under consideration are lockable storage systems or specialized pouches, such as Yondr bags, which prevent access to devices during the school day. However, outfitting the entire district with such equipment could come at a significant cost — estimated at around $60,000.
Couchman emphasized that communication with families will be key as the district navigates the transition.
“We’re going to clearly communicate what the law says and what options families have to comply,” she said.
