The Hutchinson Fire Department is strengthening its emergency medical response by expanding its roster of Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs), thanks to a growing partnership with Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp;

Fire officials recently sent five firefighters through the college’s AEMT program, building on a successful pilot initiative and bolstering the department’s ability to provide life-saving care in critical situations. The program is part of an ongoing effort to enhance pre-hospital treatment capacity beyond the basic EMT level.&nbsp;

“All of our firefighters are EMTs when they’re hired on,” said Rebecca Mendoza, the department’s EMS Training Captain, “We had five advanced EMTs prior to this class. Now, with the additional five, we’ve doubled our advanced care team. It means better service when seconds count.”&nbsp;

The AEMT certification allows firefighters to start IVs and administer more advanced medications than a basic EMT, especially in life-threatening emergencies. It also opens doors for long-term career growth.&nbsp;

Fire Captain Luke Raya&nbsp;said his motivation to pursue the AEMT credential stemmed from observing his truck’s engineer on calls.&nbsp;

“I always wondered what he was seeing and why he was doing what he did,” Raya said. “So I started learning from him, and I thought, if I ever retire and still want to work in the medical field, this would be a good path.”&nbsp;

Zack Richardson, another recent graduate of the program, said the training fulfills a longtime goal.&nbsp;

“Ever since I got my EMT license, I wanted to advance to the next level of care,” Richardson said. “I was blessed Hutchinson Fire gave me the opportunity to go through the AEMT program. It’s something I’ve been working toward for years.”&nbsp;

The training spans roughly two academic semesters, combining classroom instruction and clinical hands-on experience. The firefighters who completed the program are now better equipped to handle trauma and medical calls as demand for emergency services continues to grow.&nbsp;

The department’s investment in training reflects a broader commitment to public safety and professional development. Officials say additional AEMT classes may be offered in the future as Hutch Fire works to ensure all residents receive the highest standard of emergency medical care.&nbsp;

Hutch firefighters expand advanced emergency medical skills 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. –&nbsp;Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Adan Morales Jr., 54, died Friday, July 18, 2025. Morales was found unresponsive in his cell on July 1, 2025. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is investigated by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Kansas farmers are facing a mounting crisis as grain prices remain well below the cost of production, driving economic uncertainty and emotional strain across the state’s agricultural communities.&nbsp;

John Jenkinson, a well-known farm broadcaster and ag expert, said Friday on the BW Morning Show that current market conditions are forcing many producers to operate at a loss. “It’s like taking your paycheck from seven years ago and trying to live on it today,” Jenkinson said. “We’re anywhere from 75 cents to a dollar under what it costs to raise a bushel of wheat.”&nbsp;

Jenkinson said, for example. your average input costs are $5 to $5.25 per bushel of wheat, while local elevator prices are hovering around $4.50. With little relief in sight, Jenkinson said producers are depending on higher yields just to offset falling revenues.&nbsp;

Adding to the challenge is a sluggish export market and stiff global competition. A strong U.S. dollar and large harvests in South America, where farming costs are lower, have made American grain less competitive overseas. “The free market works when it works,” Jenkinson said, “but right now it’s not in our favor.”&nbsp;

One bright spot is a recent USDA initiative offering expedited disaster relief payments for losses from drought, floods, and freezes in 2023 and 2024. Stage one of the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program is now underway, and pre-filled applications have already started arriving in farmers’ mailboxes. Jenkinson encouraged farmers to work with their local Farm Service Agency offices to ensure landlords co-sign necessary forms.&nbsp;

“We’ve already had more bankruptcies this year than all of last year,” he said. “This is heartbreaking. These are families who survived the farm crisis of the 1980s. They’ve held on through tough times, and now they’re losing it all.”&nbsp;

Despite plunging commodity prices, Kansas land values have remained surprisingly steady—thanks, in part, to outside investment. Jenkinson, who also works in banking, noted that some land purchases are being made by wealthy investors, including foreign entities, who are not dependent on crop revenues to justify the investment. That’s helping prop up values in the short term, but Jenkinson warned it’s a fragile situation.&nbsp;

The emotional toll on the farm community is also growing. Fort Hays State University recently highlighted a surge in mental health concerns among agricultural workers, and suicide prevention is a growing focus among farm advocacy groups.&nbsp;

As farmers brace for the remainder of the season, they continue to call for fair prices, stronger export demand, and policies that support family farms rather than foreign or corporate land ownership.&nbsp;

“Farming is a labor of love,” Jenkinson said. “But right now, love alone isn’t enough.”&nbsp;

Jenkinson talks about issues facing AG producers 

As back-to-school season approaches, local organizations are stepping up to ensure Hutchinson students start the year confident and prepared.

Wisdom in Motion and Hutch in Harmony are hosting the “Equipped to Learn” giveaway on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 314 W. 1st Avenue, Suite B. The event offers free backpacks and USD 308-approved school supplies to local students in a supportive, welcoming environment.

The Hutchinson Youth City Council is lending its support to the event, highlighting the importance of investing in the future of the community by helping students in need.

“This is what community care looks like,” organizers said. “We’re building a stronger Hutch, one backpack at a time.”

In addition to the school supply giveaway, the event will feature a bounce house, hot dogs, chips, and drinks, and plenty of community spirit.

Families with students in USD 308 are encouraged to attend and take part in the free, family-friendly event designed to uplift and empower Hutchinson’s youth.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE&nbsp;&nbsp;

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced today that agricultural producers who suffered eligible crop losses due to natural disasters in 2023 and 2024 can now apply for $16 billion in assistance through the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP).

To expedite the implementation of SDRP, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) is delivering assistance in two stages. This first stage is open to producers with eligible crop losses that received assistance under crop insurance or the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program during 2023 and 2024. Stage One sign up will start in person at FSA county offices on July 10 and prefilled applications are being mailed to producers today, July 9. SDRP Stage Two signups for eligible shallow or uncovered losses will begin in early fall.

FSA is launching a streamlined, pre-filled application process for eligible crop, tree, and vine losses by leveraging existing Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) and Risk Management Agency (RMA) indemnified loss data. The pre-filled applications will be mailed on July 9, 2025.

Eligible losses must be the result of natural disasters occurring in calendar years 2023 and/or 2024. These disasters include wildfires, hurricanes, floods, derechos, excessive heat, tornadoes, winter storms, freeze (including a polar vortex), smoke exposure, excessive moisture, qualifying drought, and related conditions.

To qualify for drought related losses, the loss must have occurred in a county rated by the&nbsp;<a href="https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap.aspx" target="_blank">U.S. Drought Monitor</a>&nbsp;as having a D2 (severe drought) for eight consecutive weeks, D3 (extreme drought), or greater intensity level during the applicable calendar year.

Producers in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, and Massachusetts will not be eligible for SDRP program payments. Instead, these states chose to cover eligible crop, tree, bush, and vine losses through separate block grants. These block grants are funded through the $220M provided for this purpose to eligible states in the American Relief Act.

To apply for SDRP, producers must submit the FSA-526,&nbsp;Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP) Stage One Application,&nbsp;in addition to having other forms on file with FSA.

Stage One payments are based on the SDRP adjusted NAP or Federal crop insurance coverage level the producer purchased for the crop. The net NAP or net federal crop insurance payments (NAP or crop insurance indemnities minus administrative fees and premiums) will be subtracted from the SDRP calculated payment amount.

For Stage One, the total SDRP payment to indemnified producers will not exceed 90% of the loss and an SDRP payment factor of 35% will be applied to all Stage One payments. If additional SDRP funds remain, FSA may issue a second payment.

All producers who receive SDRP payments are required to purchase&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rma.usda.gov/">federal crop insurance</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsa.usda.gov/resources/programs/noninsured-disaster-assistance-program-nap">NAP coverage</a>&nbsp;for the next two available crop years at the 60% coverage level or higher. Producers who fail to purchase crop insurance for the next two available crop years will be required to refund the SDRP payment, plus interest, to USDA.

FSA will announce additional SDRP assistance for uncovered losses, including non-indemnified shallow losses and quality losses and how to apply later this fall.

“Anyone spending time outside right now is at risk for heat stress,” said Dr. Matt Turner, who works in the emergency departments at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) and Via Christi in Wichita. “Knowing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke — and when to seek help — can save lives.”

Dr. Turner emphasized that prevention starts with common sense precautions: wear light clothing, stay hydrated, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. “You have to be mindful of your environment,” he said. “If you're doing physical activity outdoors, listen to your body and take regular breaks.”

Initial symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

But when the body overheats further, symptoms can escalate into heat stroke — a medical emergency.

“If you stop sweating, haven't gone to the bathroom in six or seven hours, or you're feeling disoriented — those are red flags,” Dr. Turner said.

The first step in treating both heat exhaustion and preventing progression to heat stroke is to get out of the heat. “Move to a cool environment, hydrate, and try to lower your body temperature,” Dr. Turner said. Using cool, wet cloths or taking a cold shower can help.

Three day weather outlook 

WICHITA, Kan. — WSU Tech is preparing to break ground on a major expansion of its National Center for Aviation Training (NCAT), a move that promises to significantly boost the pipeline of pilots, automation specialists, and manufacturing professionals in southcentral Kansas.

The new 85,000-square-foot facility will feature modern classrooms, hands-on laboratories, and state-of-the-art training spaces, including a professional pilot training hangar. The project is aimed at supporting the region’s aviation industry and preparing students for high-demand careers.

“We are preparing the next generation of talent to meet industry needs, support innovation, and help secure the future of our region’s economy,” said Dr. Sheree Utash, President of WSU Tech. “With this expansion, we are investing in Wichita and the state of Kansas by strengthening our ability to train students for high-demand careers in aviation, automation, and advanced manufacturing, sectors that continue to evolve and grow.”

The expansion is being funded in part by a $2.2 million ALOFT grant awarded to the Wichita Airport Authority in 2023. Improvements to airport infrastructure and the runway at Jabara Airport, made possible through the grant, helped pave the way for WSU Tech’s program growth.

“The ALOFT grant has literally paved the way for development at Jabara Airport, which is not only great for us but also significant for the community,” said Jesse Romo, Director of Airports for the Wichita Airport Authority. “The grant allowed us to partner with WSU Tech to build out the infrastructure necessary for them to expand their educational programs that directly impact our aviation ecosystem through workforce development and educational programs.”

Designed by Wichita-based TESSERE and to be built by Crossland Construction Company, Inc., the new facility is scheduled to begin construction in August. Classes are expected to start in January 2027.

Once completed, the expansion is projected to serve an additional 1,450 students and trainees within its first three years, further solidifying Wichita’s reputation as the “Air Capital of the World.”

Ulster Project: Kellie Anderson, Sara Vennard and Evanna Dawson

The engines are roaring, and the excitement is building as Salt City Racing gears up for its biggest event of the year — the Salt City 100. The two-day racing festival kicks off Friday night, at the Kansas State Fairgrounds with a full slate of races, fan events, and a special guest appearance by NASCAR legend Ken Schrader.

“This is our biggest race of the year. It’s the most fun, and it’s our first two-day event of the season,” said Salt City Racing’s Phil Nightingale. “The buzz is out there, and we’re expecting a great turnout.”

Friday’s events begin with Silver Crown cars hitting the track for practice rounds. Fans will also be treated to full races in the sport mod, modified, and stock car classes. Saturday night features the main event: a 100-lap Silver Crown race — the 18th time such a race has been held on the Hutchinson half-mile dirt oval.

Adding to the excitement is Schrader’s appearance in an IMCA Modified race both Friday and Saturday. He’ll also be signing autographs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the soft opening of 25 Steak &amp; Social, located at 25 East 30th. A $5 donation at the event gets fans a pulled pork sandwich, chips, and drink, with proceeds going to the Cancer Council of Reno County.

Salt City Racing has seen strong momentum this season, with community partnerships and local support helping fuel its return to prominence.

“We don’t just look for sponsors, we build partnerships,” Nightingale said. “The businesses in Hutch and Reno County have been amazing — from Hutch Regional Medical Center to Pizza Ranch, to Evans Building and dozens more — it’s been overwhelming support.”
