HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County residents will have an opportunity to learn how to stay safe during severe weather while also receiving free emergency equipment later this month.

The Hutchinson Public Library, in partnership with Reno County Emergency Management and the United Way of Reno County, will host a Severe Weather Presentation on Wednesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. at the library, 901 N. Main St.

As part of the program, attendees will receive a free weather radio while supplies last. Distribution is limited to one radio per household, and no registration or eligibility requirements are needed to attend.

The presentation will focus on practical safety information, including how severe weather warnings are issued, what to do during tornadoes, floods and severe storms, and how to create a simple emergency plan. Participants will also learn where to find reliable local weather information and how to stay informed in situations where access to information may be limited.

Organizers will highlight the importance of weather radios, which can provide alerts 24 hours a day, even when other communication methods are unavailable.

Officials encourage those who already have reliable access to emergency alerts or weather information to consider leaving radios available for residents who may have fewer resources.

The event is free and open to the public.
