RICE COUNTY, Kan. — A series of road closures and high water alerts have been issued across Rice County as recent rainfall has led to widespread flooding on rural roads and intersections.

According to the Rice County Emergency Communications Center, multiple roads are currently impassable, and the situation is expected to worsen in the coming days. Officials have already performed several water rescues and are urging drivers to avoid flooded areas.

A more serious flood warning is in place for Cow Creek near Hutchinson from Saturday morning through early Tuesday. Forecasters predict moderate flooding, approaching the record flood stage.

A flood warning is in effect from late tonight through early Saturday afternoon for Cow Creek near Lyons, affecting Rice and Reno counties.

Officials urge residents to stay alert, avoid driving into flooded areas, and heed barricades and road closures. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the official guidance, as just two feet of water can sweep most vehicles away.

Forecasters warn that excessive rainfall could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. The affected counties include Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Kingman, and Sedgwick.

This is just a portion of a larger watch area that covers most of eastern Kansas, Missouri, and eastern Oklahoma.

The Weather Service says recent and expected rainfall could produce dangerous runoff, increasing the potential for flash flooding in urban and rural areas alike.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to act quickly if flood warnings are issued.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; — The Kansas State Fair marked a historic moment today as staff gathered to sign a steel support beam destined for the new permanent canopy over Peoples Bank and Trust Arena.

With construction well underway, Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz invited employees to leave their mark—literally—on the project by adding their names to one of the beams that will soon become a permanent part of the arena’s upgraded structure.

“This is about more than just steel and shade,” Schulz said. “It’s about making the fairgrounds more comfortable, more accessible, and better equipped for events year-round.”

The new canopy promises a cooler and more enjoyable experience for visitors, especially during the hot September days when the Kansas State Fair is in full swing. The structure will also enhance the arena’s ability to host free stage shows, concerts, and other entertainment options in comfort and shade.

Beyond the annual fair, the canopy will allow Peoples Bank and Trust Arena to be used for additional events throughout the year—opening the door for more community gatherings, performances, and special events.

Fairgoers can expect to see the completed canopy in action this September during the 2025 Kansas State Fair.

McPHERSON, Kan. — A Thursday morning fire that started on a back porch barbecue grill led to the likely total loss of a McPherson home, according to the McPherson Fire Department.

The McPherson Fire Department was dispatched at 11:25 a.m. to the 1000 block of South Ash for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived to find heavy fire involvement on the back porch, which had spread into the residence.

Two people and a dog were inside the home at the time but were able to evacuate safely.

The department initially responded with two engines and three command vehicles, totaling nine personnel. An additional fire apparatus and three more firefighters arrived later to assist. McPherson Police and McPherson EMS responded to the scene, along with Kansas Gas Service and the Board of Public Utilities, who shut off utilities to the residence.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and originated from a barbecue grill being used on a covered deck attached to the rear of the house. The blaze caused significant fire damage to the back of the home and heat and smoke damage throughout.

SALINA, Kan. — A $500,000 matching gift from the Augustine family is jumpstarting efforts to launch a Boys &amp; Girls Club in Salina, fulfilling a long-awaited vision for expanded youth services in the community.

The donation, made through the Augustine Family Donor Advised Fund at the Greater Salina Community Foundation, honors the legacy of Ted and Almita Augustine and offers a dollar-for-dollar match to support both the new Club’s startup operations and long-term sustainability.

“This matching gift challenge is a game-changer,” said Lance Patterson, CEO of the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, which is partnering on the Salina initiative. “It helps us meet the immediate needs to open our doors, while also building the foundation to serve kids for generations to come.”

Every dollar contributed to the endowed “Boys &amp; Girls Club of Salina Fund” by December 31, 2025, will be matched with an equal amount designated for operational support, effectively doubling each donor’s impact. The Club is expected to open by the end of 2025 at Oakdale Elementary School, with plans to offer academic, leadership, wellness, and career-readiness programs. A future facility is planned for the Sunset Park area.

“Our families are excited to support the start of a Salina-based Boys &amp; Girls Club,” said Donna Augustine-Shaw and Mark Augustine in a joint statement. “This initiative connects our parents’ belief in education with a powerful, lasting opportunity for Salina youth.”

The project has been championed by longtime educator Millie Moye, who worked with a dedicated advisory board and local partners to bring the vision to life.

“This has been a dream in my heart for over 20 years,” Moye said. “The Augustine family’s support is lightening the table, so that all children have a spot at the table. That is so profound.”

Former standout basketball player and Nickerson native, Ava Jones, has completed her final round of chemotherapy, her family announced this week.

Jones’ grandmother, Mary Honeck, shared the update on Facebook, thanking the medical team that helped guide Ava through her recovery from Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/d81919e3-dd21-4c1f-bee3-5ff51ca37f5e">Jones, who was diagnosed in February</a>, revealed in April that her cancer was 99% gone. She continued treatment as a precaution to ensure the disease was fully eradicated.

Ava Jones gained national attention in July 2022 after she and her family were struck by an impaired driver while walking in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father, Trey Jones, died from his injuries, while Ava and her mother, Amy, suffered critical injuries. Ava sustained a traumatic brain injury. Her younger brother, Creek, was also hurt, though less seriously. Her older brother, Hunter, was not on the trip.

The family had traveled to Kentucky for a basketball tournament just days after Ava had committed to play at the University of Iowa. The driver, Michael Hurley, was under the influence of fentanyl and was <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/3d0a1009-0057-4812-b5fc-64a26145cae2">later sentenced to 70 years in prison</a>.

Despite a determined effort to return to the court, Ava announced her medical retirement from basketball in June 2024.

ARLINGTON, Kan. — Reno County EMS broke ground Thursday on a long-awaited new ambulance station in Arlington, marking a key step toward improving facilities and maintaining strong response times in western Reno County.

The new station, designated EMS Station 3, will be located at 107 W. Fair St. and replaces the current downtown Arlington station, which officials described as outdated and overcrowded.

“This has been a project that’s been in the works for over six years,” said Reno County EMS Chief Dave Johnston. “Our current station in this area is a little rough and has needed replacement for several years, but we’re really excited to have this coming in.”

Located in one of Kansas’ largest counties by area, Reno County EMS serves a coverage area of more than 1,250 square miles.&nbsp;

The Arlington station's central location in the western part of the county makes it a critical component in the countywide emergency response system.

“It’s a great base for us to serve a large portion of the western county and improve our response times in this area,” Johnston said. “It also shows a commitment that the county and the hospital have to the community.”

Reno County EMS operates under Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and was able to fund the new station in part through allocations from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The facility will include two bays and primarily house one ambulance, known as Medic 3. It will be staffed 24/7 by at least one paramedic and an EMT or a second paramedic. Space is also included for a second, backup ambulance if needed.

“Typically, we’ll have two providers out here, and if staffing requires it, we can move additional resources,” Johnston said.

Paramedic Kyli McGreevy, who currently works at the downtown Arlington station, said the new facility will be a major upgrade.

“Our current station is just really old, kind of rundown, and we’re ready for an upgrade,” McGreevy said. “We’re excited to have more space, more separation, and dedicated work areas instead of one giant room.”

McGreevy noted that the Arlington crew covers the largest service area of any Reno County EMS unit, roughly two-thirds of the county, due to the rural nature of the region.

“Even being stationed here, if we have to go all the way to Sylvia or Plevna, we still have about a 20- to 30-minute response time,” she said. “Having this station out here is super helpful for a lot of the county. We’re able to provide that care just a little bit quicker.”

Construction, which is being done by Ward Davis Builders, is expected to be completed in early 2026.&nbsp;

Happenings Around Hutch • July 24 - July 27

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Motorcycle riders from across Kansas will gather this Saturday, July 26, for the fifth annual Ride Like MADD Poker Run, a fundraiser supporting Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) of Kansas and honoring the life of Steven Richard Golik, who was killed by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle last year.&nbsp;

The event will begin and end at Twister City Harley-Davidson, located at 5427 Chuzy Drive in Park City, with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. and the first riders departing at 10:30 a.m. Organizers expect a larger turnout than in previous years, with an estimated 150 or more riders participating in the tribute ride.&nbsp;

“This ride is about more than motorcycles,” said Casey Ensz of Bretz Injury Law who is the organizer. “It’s about raising awareness and supporting families like Steven’s who have suffered unimaginable loss due to impaired driving.”&nbsp;

This year’s poker run route includes stops at significant locations in Golik’s life. Riders will travel to Textron Aviation, where he worked for many years, Andover Central Park, where he lived, and WSU Tech’s National Center for Aviation Training, before returning to Twister City. Additional stops include Thunder Road in Augusta, highlighting the ride’s focus on both remembrance and community outreach.&nbsp;

Farmers National Company reports that the cash price many farmers are receiving for their crops is currently lower than what it costs to grow them. That’s putting pressure on the ag economy, but so far it hasn’t translated into lower land prices.

According to Paul Shadegg, senior vice president of real estate for Farmers National Company, demand from both individual and institutional investors is helping prop up the farmland market. These buyers, often armed with cash, are purchasing land as a long-term investment even as farmers themselves face shrinking profit margins.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of West 4th on the north side.

In 1925, B.F. Nichols and C.L. Steed started the business Woodwork Mfg. and were at 4 S. Walnut between 1925 to 1930.

But this article is about the property at 14-16 W. 4th.

14 W. 4th was built in 1920 to become the Indian Motorcycle Dealership in Hutch.

In 1930, Woodwork Mfg. moved to this location and continued to grow successfully. The first photo shows the company at this location.

In 1942, during World War II, the name was changed to Aircraft Woodwork Mfg. Inc. and grew from eight employees to 1,000 employees, and operated in four buildings between 4th and 7th from Main to Washington. They built several wood components for the CG-4A Glider used at the Normandy invasion, including the nose section.

After the war, the company became Woodwork Mfg. &amp; Supply Co.

In 1974, the 14-16 W. 4th location was remodeled. The second photo shows this at opening.

In 1979, Woodwork Mfg. moved in with Architectural Millwork in a new building at 401 S. Adams.

Since then, the 14-16 W. 4th buildings have been home to Rand Tool Energy Corp., Armed Forces Recruiting, Hutch Title, Don Scott Acct. and Strategic Financial Concepts. The third photo shows the 14-16 W. 4th location today, housing North Fork Financial L.L.C. with the property now owned by A&amp;A Enterprises.

Three-day weather outlook 

As construction progresses on Hutchinson’s new YMCA facility along North Lorraine, Hutchinson YMCA Executive Director David Foster says the organization is already ramping up its services and outreach—proving the Y’s impact goes well beyond new bricks and mortar.

The highly anticipated new YMCA, part of the Greater Wichita YMCA network, continues to rise visibly behind its signature blue fence. Structural steel is already in place, and Foster said crews hope to have the building enclosed between Halloween and Thanksgiving, allowing work to continue through the winter months.

“The steel was delivered earlier than expected, which really helped,” Foster said. “Now people can actually see the walls going up above the fence, and that’s exciting for the community.”

In the meantime, the Hutchinson YMCA remains active in expanding its programming. This week marks&nbsp;Campaign Awareness Week, highlighting the Y’s annual fundraising efforts that help provide income-based financial assistance and support free community programs.

“We want everyone to know the Y is for everybody, regardless of their financial situation,” Foster said. “The new facility will be beautiful, but it doesn’t change our commitment to accessibility and service.”

The Y’s new facility will also feature a unique collaboration with the Cosmosphere. A space-themed, STEM-based climbing structure will be installed in the lobby, merging physical activity with science learning. The idea, Foster said, came from a shared vision to create something distinctly “Hutchinson.”

Construction highlights include separate family and lap pools—both of which will be grounded for safety, allowing continued use during lightning. With the lap pool already plumbed and framed, excavation for the family pool is expected to begin soon.

Foster also encouraged the public to follow the Y’s progress on social media through its “Behind the Fence” video updates, which offer insight into the construction process and layout of the new facility.

A public&nbsp;Open House&nbsp;at the current facility is scheduled for&nbsp;Aug. 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;The event invites both current and prospective members to explore programs, meet staff, and learn about membership options.

“This year’s open house is in our existing building, but next year, we’re hoping it’ll be in the brand-new Y,” Foster said. “We’re looking forward to what’s ahead—and continuing to serve the community every step of the way.”
