HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A one-of-a-kind Independence Day experience is coming to Reno County this summer, offering military veterans a quiet alternative to traditional celebrations.

Wounded Warrior Project is partnering with Strataca – Kansas Underground Salt Museum to host “Mission: Underground,” an overnight event held nearly 650 feet below ground.

Scheduled for July 4, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., the event is designed exclusively for veterans. Organizers say the goal is to provide a calm and supportive environment away from fireworks and city noise—something that can be overwhelming for some former service members.

Participants will have access to optional activities or simply the opportunity to rest and unwind in the underground setting. The experience includes free admission, lodging, meals, beverages, and entertainment, all coordinated by Wounded Warrior Project.

Strataca officials say they are donating the underground space for the event, while staff members are volunteering their time to help make the experience possible.

Due to the unique nature of the overnight stay and limited capacity for its inaugural year, registration must be completed directly through Wounded Warrior Project.
