The events that unfolded last week in Washington, D.C., will stain the fabric of our democracy for the rest of our days. The images of insurrection in the Capitol are as much our legacy now as putting a man on the moon. It’s a stark contrast of what happens when we choose to embrace what divides us rather than what unites us.

There’s no doubt we all want the same things. We want the satisfaction from a good day’s work. We want a warm bed to sleep in. We all want safety and security for our friends and families. We all want our children to enjoy success greater than our own.

While our opinions differ on the best way to achieve these goals, time and time again reaching consensus and moving forward together has proven to be the most effective option.

In times of tragedy, like a death or natural disaster, we come together to mourn, recover and rebuild. In this moment, our national tragedy is manmade, but the solution is still unity and together we can mourn, recover and rebuild.

I’m proud of the pragmatism Kansas Farm Bureau employs to advocate for the interest of farmers and ranchers. We have and will continue to work with leaders of all stripes to advance our grassroots policy and organizational goals.

I must admit, I’d much rather work with leaders willing to tell hard, uncomfortable truths than ones who would placate me with promises that will never be realized. One of the best things we can do right now is demand truth from our elected representatives, no matter how unsavory it may be. We can overcome a difference of opinions, but we will be sunk by differing versions of reality.

When our forefathers declared their independence at the birth of our nation, it’s said Benjamin Franklin said, “we must all hang together, or ... we shall all hang separately.” For nearly 250 years we’ve been strengthened by our unity and built one of the greatest societies of the world. For it to continue, we must choose to see the best in others. We must strive for consensus in areas where it’s obtainable, and we must continue debating in good faith in those were we can’t.

Last week provided a compelling example. A few politicians entertained the idea the election results could be challenged. A mob stormed the Capitol in hopes of changing those results. In the end, the mob lost, and reality was certified. That result isn’t guaranteed in the future, and we now must choose if we want to continue on a path that will fray the fabric that holds us together or if we will rise to the occasion and let the stain fade as we have with other dark days in our history.

As individuals, it’s our duty to listen to each other if we want to mend and heal our nation. If we do this together today, I can promise you tomorrow will be brighter in our United States.

HAVEN, Kan.— The Haven USD 312 School Board with a full agenda to start the new year. The Board will do the usual housekeeping chores including appointing a Board President and Vice President. The Board will also make its appointments to the Reno County Education Cooperative.

Once the Board gets down to business they will recognize the second quarter Impact Award winner for the district and take up the issue of bringing wrestling back to its athletic program.&nbsp;

And like other government entities the district will consider extending its COVID leave program and go into executive session for personnel matters.&nbsp;

The Board will also take action on the renewal of Superintendent Clark Wedel’s contract for another year.

Monday’s meeting of the Haven USD 312 School BOard begins at 6 p.m at the Haven High School library.

Haven School Board meets on Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 504 as of Sunday afternoon. The death count among Reno County residents is at 108.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has six active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 70 active cases. Forty-four people within those clusters have died. There are 40 active clusters in the county.

Out of 6,940 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic, there are 501 cases in the community at large. 6,328 people have recovered thus far.

Twelve Reno County residents are in the hospital. According to the dashboard, three hundred eighteen total have been hospitalized. Ninety-six have been admitted to the ICU and 31 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is at 27.24%, with the overall positive test rate at 32.45%. 34.03% of the population has been tested.

There are now two free public testing sites, one in the Cosmosphere parking lot in Hutchinson and one at Simply Good Overstocks parking lot in South Hutchinson. They are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The founder of IdeaTek and former Buhler mayor won his seat in the general election in November. Mark Steffen filled in after the death of Commissioner Bob Bush.

Once things get underway, the board will take action on a request from the sheriff's department for the purchase of two Ford Interceptor patrol vehicles and one responder truck. All three would come from Midwest Ford at a total cost of $84,495.

The board will also elect its new chair and vice chair and hear a report from County Administrator Randy Partington on the 2020 budget.

Tuesday's meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Courthouse.

Friesen takes County Commission seat Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will hold its first meeting of the new year on Monday. That means a reorganization of the board with a new president and vice president being appointed.

The board will also recognize the two Horizon Award recipients for the district, Paige Stewert and Nick Preheim, and go over the professional services agreement with RSP and Associates. The company is doing a full assessment of the district needs, including facilities.&nbsp;

The board will also go over a revised transportation agreement with Durham Bus Services. Under the revised agreement, the district will pay the fixed cost for its bus lease no matter what type of learning model the district is in. The bus service costs the district $6,186 per day.

Durham will continue to provide all essential and required services as well as pay and retain staff. This is the fixed rate and does not include actual hours for drivers and attendants on duty.&nbsp;

Monday’s Hutchinson USD 308 School Board meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Career and Technical Education Academy at 800 15th Circle.

USD 308 to kick off new year Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Crews called out to a house fire Thursday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to 210 South Ford around 4:50 p.m. after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the home. Crews responded and were able to quickly contain the blaze at its point of origin. Three people found sleeping inside the home and were rescued. All three were evaluated but refused transport to the hospital. There were no injuries reported.

The blaze caused smoke and heat damage throughout the home. The cause of the fire was from an electrical issue.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch Chamber announced this week that its Small Business Award for the month is Ashcraft Pharmacy. The Small Business Award recognizes the significant contribution small businesses make to the local economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ashcraft Pharmacy has been serving the South Hutchinson area for more than 30 years.

After falling to a low of 442 on Jan. 4, the number of positive cases in the county has jumped by 70 in the past four days to 512 with 511 in the community.

The area saw a similar increase after the Thanksgiving holiday, but it was short lived as case numbers declined by almost 1,000 between the two holidays.

The death toll from the pandemic in Reno County remains at 106, with 6,238 recovered.

Post-holiday increase of COVID in Reno Co.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Another antique mall is opening in Hutchinson. The Long Ago Antique Mall is preparing to open in the old Long’s clothing store building in the downtown area.

The business is the idea of Tess Phillips, who has had a love of antiques for many years.

“Me and my husband have been married for 30 years and we have been antiquing our whole married life,” Phillips said. “My husband said 'let's do something you love.' So that’s what brought this on.”

Phillips says they will use only a small portion of the 11,500 square-foot space at first, but hope to expand the business as customers grow. The business is similar to antique malls in other areas and also like others in town. The store will rent out space for those who have goods to sell or trade.

As far as the name of the new business goes, Phillips says they wanted to keep the word “long” in the name since the building had such a long history as Long’s clothing store.

“That’s why we named it Long Ago,” Phillips said. “Long's has been here since 1972. I remember coming in as a kid and also bringing my boys here for their tuxes.”

Phillips says they will be open normal downtown hours along with Third Thursday and during the monthly flea market at the fairgrounds.

The chain started in Omaha, Nebraska, and has 11 stores in the Omaha area along with six restaurants in Iowa, two in Missouri and one in South Dakota. This will be its first venture into Kansas.

Abelardo’s is a dine-in a carryout establishment that also offers catering. Planning Director Ryan Hvitlok says they expect to have more of an idea when the restaurant will open as they work with the developers further.

Fazoli's closed its doors in Hutchinson in the spring of 2017 after 15 years in business.

The company is also said to work with financial institutions to buy liquidated assets from closed businesses.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce has come up with a way to support public health in Reno County while earning money for your business.

The Kansas Leadership Center has funded a grant project in Hutchinson that is being administered by a sub-group of the Visit Hutch Tourism Coalition. The initiative, called "Caught in the Act Hutch," is looking for businesses to participate.

This $3,000 grant will be used to purchase $100 gift cards from participating host businesses and other smaller $10 gift cards from local businesses to reward people through an online contest who are caught in the act of practicing good public health practices, in particular wearing masks, washing hands and maintaining social distancing.&nbsp;

A business will need to participate in 16 weeks of the project by agreeing to post signage at the business about the project, make sure employees are knowledgeable about the project, encourage those caught in the act to register for prizes and, if possible, assist with publicity through sharing campaign information via media and other marketing avenues.&nbsp;

Chamber offering businesses a promotion with healthy angle

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec announced Thursday it is now providing indoor pickleball.&nbsp;

Hutch Rec’s new Pickleball Club will be for players of all ages and abilities. Play will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena; Tuesday and Thursday from 6:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall; and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Memorial Hall. Pickleballs and paddles are available to borrow.

Players must practice safe social distancing and wear masks when not actively playing on the pickleball court.

Registration is $10 a month and can be done in person at Hutch Rec Downtown, 17 E. 1st, or online at <a href="https://secure.rec1.com/KS/hutchinson-ks/catalog">hutchrec.com</a>.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Whether it’s a lightning strike on liftoff or the safe return of astronauts stranded in space, NASA’S Mission Operations Control Room (MOCR) was the location where crisis management skills were put to the test. Cosmosphere’s next virtual “Coffee at the Cosmo” will appeal to business leaders as well as space enthusiasts. The event is Thursday, Jan. 21, at 9 a.m. and will be via virtual format.

Viewers can participate in a virtual conversation with Gerry Griffin, who served as a flight director during the Apollo program and succeeded Chris Kraft as the director of Johnson Space Center. Griffin will be joined by Sandy Marshall, a leadership training expert who has helped clients from Verizon and General Electric to Morgan Stanley understand how to bring the fluid skills of improvisation to bear on critical moments in leadership. “Coffee at the Cosmo” participants will learn how techniques such as “Yes/And” thinking improve collaboration and outcomes and how that parallels stories Griffin will share from MOCR. We then had a period where funding fell behind inflation until about 2017 and the last several years we've had more funding added in response to the Gannon case."

Of the just under $2 billion in additional school funding beyond inflation from 1999 to 2020, approximately 75 percent was for personnel.

"The legislature has added a lot of money to make up for past underfunding in the KPERS system," Tallman said. "We showed how districts have also, with the approval of local voters, added a lot of funding for school facilities. Interestingly enough, as we've spent the last several months debating the problems we've had keeping kids in school with the pandemic, it's really I think helped show how important having good school facilities really are and how much we miss them if we don't have them."

Higher construction costs based on 1999 spending accounted for 5 precent of the total and additional enhancements to school facilities the remaining 20 percent.

Tallman: Funding has gone up over time

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters worked Thursday night on a house fire at 721 East First Avenue.

The fire call was just before 9:30 p.m. and crews reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the front living room area. 

The fire was contained to the one room. The home sustained smoke and heat damage and is uninhabitable.

No one was hurt, but two people were evaluated by EMS at the scene. The investigation continues.

Fire displaces two people Thursday night in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After being away for more than a month, students will be returning to the HutchCC campus on Monday. The good news is that enrollment is up over last spring.

“We’re moving forward, ready to start classes next Monday morning,” spokesperson Denny Stoecklein said. “Enrollment credit hours are up about one and a half percent over what they were last spring.”

Stoecklein says he attributes the increase to students wanting to learn from home as opposed to learning on campus at a bigger school, but being limited to a virtual format, something that was expected if the pandemic continued.

“Some of the feedback we were hearing in the fall . . . students who were perhaps at a four-year (college) and spending time at the four-year but doing everything online shared that they may look to come back home and take classes from us instead of spending dollars at another institution,” Stoecklein said.&nbsp;

Stoecklein says that he hasn’t broken down the areas of study for students for the spring semester, but did note that the vocational programs offered at the college will be busy again this year.

“We’re hearing that,” Stoecklein said. “As a matter of fact, this morning (Thursday) we were on a conference call with a few of us and an employer out of&nbsp; McPherson said that&nbsp; business is great, we just need bodies. We need people. And that’s not an uncommon thing we hear.”

Stoecklein says that while most community colleges saw enrollment drop by 7%, HutchCC's enrollment loss was less than 2%.

HutchCC gearing up for spring semester

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 512 as of Thursday afternoon. The death count among Reno County residents is at 106.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has five active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 73 active cases. Forty-two people within those clusters have died. There are 40 active clusters in the county.

Out of 6,856 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic, there are 511 cases in the community at large. 6,238 people have recovered thus far.

Twenty-three Reno County residents are in the hospital. Three hundred twenty total have been hospitalized. Ninety-six have been admitted to the ICU and 31 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is at 27.24%, with the overall positive test rate at 32.47%. 33.59% of the population has been tested.

Hutchinson, Kan.—A melodic, heart-warming story, it is based on the real life of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. The story begins with Maria, an Austrian maiden who must choose between secular and religious life when her convent sends her to act as governess to the seven children of a stern widowed naval captain. She falls in love with the Von Trapp’s and brings a new love of life and music into the home as Nazi storm clouds gather over the country.

Auditions will take place on Saturday, January 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m at Stage 9. You must sign up for an audition time slot on Stage 9’s Facebook page. Interested actors who cannot attend the auditions during these times, please contact Lynsey Becher at lynsey@stage9hutch.com to make alternate arrangements. Auditions will consist of 16-32 bars of a prepared song. Please provide music for accompanist or an mp3 to be played. Stage 9 Hutch to present a virtual production of the Sound of Music; auditions January 16th

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — While many businesses have been hurt by the pandemic, many manufacturers have recovered and are still struggling to find workers. Tucky Allen with Kansas Workforce says, outside of Wichita, manufacturers are looking for employees again. But it hasn’t been easy.

“It’s still a struggle to find good skilled labor that fits,” Allen said. “But I think they’re all hiring for the most part . . . all is pretty good, it’s just a matter of finding the people.”

Allen says some area residents have been staying on unemployment under the current COVID relief program, but that will change soon.

“The thing I see in this is it’s going to end on March 13th, so that’s what we need to be telling job seekers,” Allen said. “It’s time to get back to work.”

Allen says if you are considering moving into the industry workforce, there is financial help for you to learn a new skill.

“The ones that are laid off . . . they will qualify for WOIA (Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act) funding where they can go back and we can help fund the cost of short-term in-demand training,” Allen said. “Those certificate programs at community colleges and short-term training programs there, they fit perfectly.”

KansasWorks will be hosting several statewide virtual job fairs in the coming months, with the first being held Jan. 26 through Jan. 28. Employers throughout the state of Kansas are invited to participate. The event will be promoted through KansasWorks as well as social media sites to attract a large number of job seekers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— He has held the position of President since
the chapter of the NAACP stared in Hutchinson 52 years ago. Now Darrell Pope has
retired. The NAACP held their election as scheduled and Pope is handing the reins to Calvin
Wright. &nbsp;

Pope stepped into the role of
chapter president the year after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated,
and has served Hutchinson since. With&nbsp;52 years of service, he remains the
longest-serving chapter president in the history of the national organization. 

Pope will serve as second vice-president, and intends to
remain active in several committees within the branch.&nbsp;

Wright is retired from the United States Air Force, where he
held a number of telecommunications positions including service as a Global
Telecommunications Manager, Telecommunications Quality Control Supervisor,
Recruiter, and concluded his military service in as the Senior Liaison, Procurement
Management Information System Supervisor. 

Since July of 2015 Wright has worked as the Vice President
and Chief Information Officer at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS).
He is enthusiastic with his family’s move to Hutch and says they are looking
forward to many years of service to the Hutchinson community.
