NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board will meet in a special session this evening. The board will go into executive session and is expected to name the new superintendent.

The two finalists interviewed this week were Curtis Nightingale and Greg Clark.

Nightingale currently serves as the junior high/high school principal at Twin Valley USD 240 in Bennington. He is in his fifth year. Previously, Nightingale served as assistant principal/activities director for 10 years at Pratt High School.

Clark is the superintendent for USD 112 Central Plains. He is in his seventh year. Previously, Clark served as an elementary school principal for eight years in USD 402 Augusta.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 8 at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th.

CHENEY, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Cheney State Park Marina public water supply system.&nbsp;

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system caused by a water pump malfunction.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the marina indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination have been resolved according to the KDHE.

Boil water order rescinded

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie School Board approved hiring an interim superintendent during a special meeting held Thursday morning.&nbsp;

The USD 311 School Board approved appointing Mike Baldwin to the position. Baldwin takes over for Randy Hendrickson who was terminated by the board during Monday's meeting. Hendrickson’s last day was Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Board approved the hiring of Ashley Anderson as the new permanent superintendent earlier this year. She begins her new duties July 1.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works says the North Main mill and overlay project will begin Monday, weather permitting.

Crews will begin milling from 5th north to 13th Avenue Monday and Tuesday. The paving will follow Wednesday and should be completed by Friday.

North Main mill and overlay begins Monday

Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson police are still looking for a second suspect following a chase on Tuesday night that resulted in a teenager in custody on aggravated robbery charges. 

According to the Hutchinson Police Activity Report, 16-year-old Zahkye Deprell Rouse was arrested for Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Battery, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Felony Flee and Elude, Illegal transportation of liquor, Possession of a firearm under the influence, Illegal display, No proof of insurance and driving without a license.

Lt. Dustin Loepp said the incident began with Rouse and the second suspect stealing personal property from a 20-year-old man in Hutchinson. One of the suspects produced a gun in the commission of the robbery. The vehicle with the property inside was chased throughout the city before being stopped in the area of the Commerce Gardens Apartments, with Rouse driving and a second person inside. Both have now been interviewed and Rouse's passenger at the time he was stopped is not believed to be connected to the robbery.

Loepp said they are still confirming information on the second suspect, so he did not want to give an incorrect name to the Post. 

Loepp said the two suspects and the victim know each other, so there is no general threat to the community.

Second suspect still being sought after Tuesday chase

Kan. — An annual tradition during the NJCAA basketball tournament returns next week to help out the local American Legion Post.

"April 22 is going to be the pancake feed at the American Legion at 730 W. 4th here in Hutch," said Jeremy Ehart with the Legion. "The feed will be from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. that morning. This year, it's going to be takeout only, so it's going to be a little bit different."

Instead of all you can eat, they're going to ask what you want.

"You'll come in still, you'll be able to pick out how many pancakes you want, we'll give you a couple of patties of sausage, some orange juice all the necessary condiments to go, with some silverware," Ehart said. "You can take it all out in a nice little bag."

If you bought tickets last year and still have them, those tickets are still good.

"We're going to have tickets for sale at the tournament this year," Ehart said. "If you're at the Sports Arena watching the Dragons play this year, you can buy tickets there, or we do have tickets available at the Legion Post."

Tickets are a suggested donation of $5 in advance or $6 the day of the event, for kids eight and under, they charge $3 per ticket.

The Board of Reno County Commissioners is going to begin the process of looking at burn ban regulations again after the wildfires that threatened the northeast part of the county earlier this spring.

"I feel that we certainly need to give our rural farmers the opportunity to burn," said Reno County Commissioner Ron Sellers. "I think we need to be very concise on when and how."

Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer, who is responsible for Fire District 2 in addition to the city, is ready to come to the table with his colleagues to help.

"I think we could better prepare that in what we see and what all the firefighters in the county have to deal with, there are better ways to do different things," Beer said. "I think with the county chiefs association, you've got them all there from all the districts. I'm just the city and district two. I'm just one voice of many. I think a liaison with one of the commissioners might be appropriate, to have a deeper discussion on what it takes to mitigate these things. They're getting more frequent."

There is not an offseason for wildfires any more.

"Wildfire season was typically in the spring," Beer said. "It started last December. Actually, November was the big one in Harvey County already. These things are almost year round. Even the 4th of July last year, with the fireworks, we ran a bunch of brush fires last year when it was dry in the summertime."

It's important to note that it takes massive amounts of resources to get ahead of a wildfire once it starts.

Reno County will get burn ban regs input from fire chiefs

TOPEKA – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt this week recognized Melinda Young, an attorney for Bretz &amp; Young, LLC, for outstanding service to crime victims.

In a video presentation as part of this year’s virtual Crime Victims’ Rights Conference, Schmidt announced that Young was the recipient of the Community Champion Award.

For the last six years, Young has served the needs of others with her contribution to the Board of Directors for BrightHouse, the Hutchinson agency serving victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. Young oversaw a multitude of positive changes within the organization including remodeling of the shelter house, expanding critical services and enhancing prevention efforts for youth.

Donna Davis, executive director of BrightHouse, said that Young spent countless hours assisting in their nearly one-year search for an executive director, all while continuing her duties at her local law firm. In nominating Young, Davis said, “BrightHouse would not be the healthy, thriving, and positive organization it is today without Melinda’s love for BrightHouse and our work with youth, victims and survivors in our community.”

The annual recognition of those who provide outstanding service to victims of crime is taking place during the 23rd Annual Crime Victims’ Rights Conference, hosted this week by the governor and attorney general. This conference is being held virtually for the first time and comes ahead of next week’s observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Hutchinson attorney recognized for service to crime victims

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A former Kansas police chief accused of stalking and violating a protective order was convicted Wednesday morning in Reno County District Court.

Former Bushton Police Chief Brian Treaster was booked into Reno County Correctional Facility on April 19, 2019, in connection with a stalking incident. He was later charged with battery of the same victim in June that same year.

After a two-day trial, a jury deliberated just 90 minutes before finding Treaster guilty of felony stalking, felony criminal threat, misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor violation of a PFA.

The city says the goal is to find the most effective ways to reach people where they are. Not everyone can make it to council meetings, not everyone is comfortable calling their city council representatives. The city wants to find various ways to reach people and wants to know what would best suit the public for getting necessary information out along with helping address concerns from residents.

The current district face covering mandate will be replaced with: “Face coverings are recommended for students and staff with final decision to be made by families and employees.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Building Official Izzy Rivera wants to remind residents that the warmer weather means mowing season is here. Having grass or weeds that are 12 inches high or taller is a code violation within city limits.&nbsp;

“People tend to think it's just about aesthetics, and of course we want to protect the property values of our neighborhoods and increase quality of life measures, but there are other reasons it's important,” Rivera said.&nbsp;

Overgrown weeds not only increase fire danger to the property itself, but they can increase the chance of fire spreading from one property to another. They also harbor insects, rodents, reptiles, and other creatures that can be a menace to health and safety.&nbsp;

Last year, the City of Hutchinson was more lenient with enforcement as COVID made things more difficult for everyone, but as things begin to return to normal, residents can expect to see enforcement stepping up.&nbsp;

“If a property is found in violation, we let the owner know and give them 10 days to take care of it. If the issue persists, that property will be added to our mow list for the year and will be mowed as needed, with the owner being billed,” Rivera said.&nbsp;

City reminds residents to keep grass height in check

NICKERSON, Kan. — Nickerson USD 309 has released the name of its second finalist for its vacant Superintendent position.&nbsp;

Greg Clark is interviewing for the position Wednesday. Clark is the second of two candidates that the USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson board of education will be interviewing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Clark is currently serving as the Superintendent for USD 112 Central Plains.&nbsp; He is in his seventh year in that position. Previously, Greg served as an Elementary School Principal for 8 years in USD 402 Augusta, KS.

Clark will tour facilities and then meet with the public at Reno Valley Middle School at 3:30 this afternoon before meeting with the board at 5:30.

The district hopes to name their new leader by the end of the month.

Central Plains Superintendent interviews for USD 309 position 

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie USD 311 School Board approved relieving current Superintendent Randy Hendrickson of his duties during Monday's meeting. Hendrickson’s last day was Tuesday.&nbsp;

Hendrickson was set to step down at the end of June anyway, but the action on Monday brought that date up to now. The Board will hold a special meeting at 6:15 a.m. Thursday to name an interim for Hendrickson. No information about Hendrickson's removal was given, since it is a personnel matter.

The Board approved the hiring of Ashley Anderson as the new Superintendent earlier this year. She is set to begin her new duties starting July 1, although discussion in the district has come up about possibly moving that date up.

USD 311 School Board relieves Hendrickson of his duties

Debra Teufel, CEO of the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce wanted to highlight an upcoming event for kids who are going on to a career in something other than sports.

"We have a fun event coming up on May 6," Teufel said. "It's brand new for our community and it's called Signing Day. It's going to be held at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy. This is not a new concept in our country. It's new to Hutch."

The idea is that those that are going on to two or four year schools because of talent on the playing field or in the arts aren't the only ones who should be honored for their future plans.

"It's basically for those kids who are committing to go into a career and tech ed track that requires some technical education, either through HCTEA or through Hutchinson Community College," Teufel said. "They're making that commitment to their future and we want to value that just as much as we want to value kids that are signing to go to college for whatever activity, whether its music or sports."

The intent is to have as many Reno County schools represented as they can.

"Travis Reibel is working with the public schools and even private schools to make sure there's transportation lined up," Teufel said. "We'll have a schedule of kids coming in. We also will have businesses there that they can network with and talk about, maybe their future jobs and we'll have a ceremony for them. We'll have them come up to the table, they'll introduce themselves, they'll sit there, they'll get a commemorative shirt for Signing Day this year. Then they'll actually sign a certificate saying, I'm committing to my future career."

There are other signing days that are school specific, like one coming up for WSU Tech in April, but the Chamber event is May 6.

Kan. — A group of community organizations in Hutchinson come together to put up American flags on the appropriate holidays as a fundraiser each year.

"We provide flags for residents and businesses on six of the flag holidays per year," said Bob Ross with the Kiwanis Club. "It's a service we do to raise funds. It's also raising the spirit of the community by putting flags up in front of their house or their business."

The next day they will be put up is Memorial Day. They put up flags around sunrise and take them down before sunset.

"Flags are placed on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veteran's Day," Ross said. 

To be put on the list to put a flag in your yard costs $36 a year.

"The money goes to the clubs that are involved for the routes that they perform," Ross said. "The funds go back to the community. The club puts it in our treasury and we support a lot of initiatives with youth."

Kan. — The Kansas State Fair Board met Tuesday via Zoom to give approval to a Community Service Tax Credit Program application put in by the Kansas State Fair and supporting parties to help with fundraising for renovating the Encampment Building.

"Skills USA has a network of schools throughout the state of Kansas," Berger said. "They have been very forthcoming as far as letters of support for the project. Certainly, I'll ask for a letter of support from the chair of the board, as well. It again, is something that provides real incentive for private investment in a project that I think we need to see happen."

The award would provide $250,000 in tax credits to those who donate.

"The application period ends April 30 and then the committee reviews the month of May and then will make recommendations in June, with the intention to notify by July 1," said Kayla Savage with the Department of Commerce.

The fair board's next meeting will be May 11.

Fair Board applying for tax credits for Encampment Building renovations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 announced that kindergartners for the 2021-22 school year and their parents or guardians are invited to attend an in-school districtwide Kindergarten Roundup Tuesday, April 27, from 6-7 p.m. in all the district’s neighborhood elementary schools. This is a come-and-go event designed for students to get pre-enrolled and to meet school staff.

This is for any child who will be 5 on or before Aug. 31, 2021.&nbsp;

New kindergartners whose families would like for them to attend Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen are asked to contact the school for an application. As a districtwide magnet school, HMS at Allen does not have boundaries.

Families are also asked to go on Facebook and “like” their school’s page to get more updates as the time gets closer.

This is the first in-school Kindergarten Roundup for all district schools since 2008 – the year before the Hutchinson High School Class of 2021 entered kindergarten. USD 308 to hold Kindergarten Roundup

WASHINGTON, D.C. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann and Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chris Pappas Introduced the Affordable Housing for Homeless Veterans Act. This bill aims to increase the number of affordable housing options, especially in urban areas, to help reduce the recent uptick in veteran homelessness.

“Our job on the Veterans Affairs Committee is to ensure we are taking care of, and doing right by, our veterans," Congressman Mann said. “I am pleased to lead The Affordable Housing for Homeless Veterans Act with Congressman Pappas, which reauthorizes a program to curb veteran homelessness. Mann introduces legislation to battle veteran homelessness

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If all goes as planned and the weather cooperates, the mill and overlay portion of the North Main Street project could begin as early as next week.

Jeff Peterson with Hutchinson Public Works says they could see work start soon with the milling taking place as soon as next week and the overlay to follow.&nbsp;

The work will force the closing of one or two lanes of traffic. Peterson says some other concrete work and other touchups will continue for another 30 days or so once the paving is finished. The completion of this phase will bring an end to a four-year-long renovation of Main from 30th Avenue south to 5th Avenue.

North Main mill and overlay could begin next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The two men arrested in connection with a shooting that left one man dead and another injured were in court Tuesday morning.

Sixty-four-year-old Sandral Wade and 71-year-old Robert Lagrange were taken into custody Monday afternoon on suspicion of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.&nbsp;

The pair are believed to have been involved in an early-morning shooting Sunday in the 1500 block of West 12th Avenue.&nbsp;

Wade was denied a bond reduction request and is being held on a bond of $1 million while Lagrange’s bond is $500,000.

Both are expected to be back in court on or before April 20 for the formal reading of charges.

"Where I disagree with you both for different reasons is, I think there is some significant value in not kicking the can down the road, either by putting a moratorium on it or by approving the regulations as they stand," Friesen said. "Either one, I don't think, gets us where we want to be in this county. It takes the pressure off of everybody and nothing's going to happen."

After listening to Friesen, commissioner Ron Sellers was willing to let the issue continue to percolate for a few more weeks.

"I respect Commissioner Friesen that suggests in his mind that there might be movement toward a satisfactory solution," Sellers said. "I'll support his motion at this point."

Chairman Ron Hirst doesn't believe more time will get them anywhere.

"I was disappointed to not make any decision today regarding the prohibition on wind farms," Hirst said Tuesday. I think we did successfully kick the can down six weeks. We're going to end up with the same thing. We know what's going to happen. There's no sense in prolonging this. If you ask the people out there, I think it was a sign that corporations pushed out the people's will and their desires and I think we let that happen."

The issue has once again been held off until May 25th.

Wind farm regs tabled once more

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 announced Tuesday that they still have some openings available for students who want to take advantage of the Salthawk Summer Learning program.&nbsp;

The program allows students to recover credits from classes they have not passed or work to sharpen their learning skills.

Session one will run from June 7 through June 24 and the second session is July 6 through July 22. Class runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and then from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served free of charge.&nbsp;

Students will be required to attend in person and due to the condensed schedule students may not miss more than two class days. If you would like more information you can contact Kyle Sawyer, Assistant Principal at Hutchinson High School at 620-615-4116.
