— The Buhler USD 313 school board will have a brief executive session for negotiations on its teacher contract as part of the regular meeting Monday.

Also on the agenda is recognition of the Buhler High Track and Field Team, an update on the KJUMP lawsuit regarding the utility spike during last winter's cold snap, and data on state assessments. 

The board will also receive reports from its Director of Finance, Shane Hecox and Superintendent Cindy Couchman.

The meeting will take place Monday evening at 6:00 pm in the Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 Board of Education meets Monday evening.

The board will first go into executive session regarding non-elected personnel before returning to the agenda portion of the meeting.

The board will go over several personnel matters, get a report on the track and seek approval of the new board meeting schedule for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1.&nbsp;

The board will also take time to discuss what direction the district could go in regard to a bond issue. The last attempt to pass a $29 million facilities improvement bond issue failed by more than a 2-1 margin.&nbsp;

There has been some talk about taking another attempt to pass a bond issue that would make improvements to the district's facilities.

Monday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is a light agenda for the Hutchinson City Council when it meets Tuesday.

One of only two action items is action on a resolution in support of Amtrak's planned expansion of service from Oklahoma City to Newton. <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/98c48a59-ce70-4d37-9e55-46b76060ca58">Amtrak wants to extend the Heartland Flyer route</a> and the city will be asked to throw its support to the proposal.

The other item is a revision to the city code regarding the building contractors, and the way they are licensed and registered within the city. The revision came at the request of developer Jim Strawn, who went before the Building Trades Board.

The council will also get an update on the Cow Creek drainage project, which should get into full swing later this summer.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Hutchinson City Council begins at 9 a.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.

The board will also go over capital outlay purchases for the next year and take action on contracts for classified and supplemental contracts.&nbsp;

Haven USD 312 board agenda session is Monday

Kan. — The summer driving season is particularly dangerous for young drivers.

"The 100 Deadliest Days is what we refer to as the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Nationwide, more than 7000 people died in crashes involving teen drivers from 2010 to 2019 through that 100 Deadliest Days period."

That's more than seven people per day through the summer, up from six people per day the rest of the year.

"There is a marked increase in crashes and fatalities, especially with teen drivers during the summer," Steward said. "Here in Kansas, there were 114 people killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days from 2010 through 2019."

Parents need to talk to their teens about safe driving behaviors if they will be on the road.

"Make sure that they are avoiding dangerous behaviors," Steward said. "Speeding is a big one. Obviously, distracted driving is always a factor. Texting, distraction with other passengers in the vehicle, aggressive driving and especially driving without a seatbelt."

In a AAA Foundation survey, about 72% of teen drivers aged 16-18 admitted to having engaged in at least one risky behavior in the past 30 days.

AAA: Talk to teens about 100 Deadliest Days

Kan. — Phil Kerpen with American Commitment wants to see those who are against government expansion begin to use their voices as pandemic restrictions continue to ease.

"We're looking at really, the most radical left-wing agenda we've ever seen from a presidency," Kerpen said. "Given how much the American people have been distracted by COVID and now, may be distracted from their relief that it's kind of over and they can get back to life, I think there's a low level of engagement. That makes it dangerous, because when people are paying a low level of attention, Washington can do some bad things."

Kerpen believes engagement isn't just important in the case of the usual swing vote suspects in the U.S. Senate, but throughout the entire process, because these aren't robust Democratic majorities.

"If something can get through the House, then the question becomes can they hold together every single Senate Democrat and get it through and maybe have to change Senate rules to get it through, if it's subject to filibuster and that kind of thing," Kerpen said.

Right now, Democrats have a 219-211 majority in the House with five vacancies and a 50-50 tie in the Senate, with Vice President Harris serving as the tie breaker. 

"Politicians tend to be followers more than they are leaders," Kerpen said. "They put a finger in the wind and they follow public opinion most of the time. Not always, of course. A lot of them did something they knew was very unpopular with Obamacare and then they lost re-election. They thought it was worth it. That's very rare. The vast majority of the time, when there's public outrage and anger and pushback, they sort of scatter."

The party of the incumbent president tends to lose ground during midterm elections, so it's not far-fetched to say that much of President Biden's agenda will likely need to pass before campaigning really ramps up for 2022.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two area lakes remain under advisories for blue-green algae.&nbsp;

Marion County Lake is under a watch, which means you can do some water activities, but must use caution. Swimming and water skiing are discouraged. The Marion Reservoir is under a warning, which means all contact with the water should be avoided. All livestock and pets should be kept away from the water.

Visitors may fish at the lakes, but only the fillet portion should be consumed. The KDHE issues the algae advisories every Thursday during the summer months. No other lakes in the area are under any advisory at this time.

Marion lakes still under algae advisories

STERLING, Kan. — The city of Sterling received more than a half million dollars in state funds for a major street project in the city.&nbsp;

The $550,680 in the latest round of Cost Share funding will go to make major improvements to Cleveland Street. The Cost Share program is designed to help rural and urban areas advance transportation projects to improve safety, support job retention and growth, relieve congestion, and improve access and mobility. Sterling was among 30 transportation construction projects selected for the Spring 2021 Cost Share recipients.

“The project means everything to Sterling,” City Manager Craig Crossette said. “It is a catalyst during a unique period in our community’s history where we can go one or two ways: forward or backward.”&nbsp;

The project involves a mill and asphalt overlay on East Cleveland Avenue, beginning from the east side of K-14/K-96 through the First Street intersection. Crews will replace the gravel surface with concrete curb and gutter and full-depth asphalt pavement. Also, the First Street/Washington avenue intersection pavement will be replaced with new concrete pavement to provide a smooth surface and improve drainage.

Total cost of the project is $786,686 with KDOT providing $550,680 and Sterling adding $236,006, a 30% local match.

Sterling receives major grant for street project

Twenty-one new law enforcement officers, including two from Reno County, graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on June 11th at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium near Yoder.

Officer Kaelin Leach of the Hays Police Department was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief of Police for the Abilene Police Department, Anna Hatter. Steve McCorkill, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 279th Basic Training Class.

Officer Nicholas Pate of the Overbrook Police Department was named the Welch Award Winner for having the highest academic achievement over 94% in the class. Officer Randall Douvier from the Newton Police Department was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot”. Officer Cassidy Fox from the Leavenworth Police Department walked, ran, or biked more than 200 miles during her time at KLETC and exceeded the other physical requirements of the 200 Mile Club including push-ups, sit-ups, and a timed run. Officer Jeffery McKinney from the Abilene Police Department was honored as the student with the most improved fitness since the beginning of basic training.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

The graduates, who began their training in March 2021, represented 19 municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas. Graduates are listed below by county and agency:

Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center Graduates 279th Basic Training Class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is looking for attendees for its next Chamber luncheon on Wednesday.

This month's Membership Luncheon is sponsored by Hutton. Jeremy Hill, Director of the WSU Center for Economic Development and Business Research will speak.

The event is from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Sand Hills Event Center at 4601 N Plum St.

Hutchinson, Kan. – The next to last meeting of the fiscal year was fairly routine for the Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday.

The Board acknowledged the success of its men’s golf and football teams, both of which claimed national championships during the 2020-21 year. In addition, the Board was introduced to its new coaching staff for men’s basketball, head coach Tommy DeSalme and assistant coaches Eric Nitsche and Anthony White.

The Board also conducted several items of business including approving a one-time compensation payment to its benefits-eligible employees and received an update on changes in the Higher Learning Commission accreditation requirements.

The next meeting of the board will be on Thursday, June 24. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater. The public is invited to attend.&nbsp;

HutchCC Board of Trustees meets coaches, approves one-time payment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Kansas City man who was part of a shooting that injured two people near the Hutchinson Walmart will spend a little more than a year in prison.

Deante Watley-Jones pleaded to two counts of aggravated assault in the shooting of Darin Rodriguez Nov. 9, 2019, during a confrontation between occupants of two vehicles.&nbsp;

Watley-Jones could have received a much longer sentence, but the state and defense agreed to the plea on a less-severe charge. The defense asked for probation in the case, but Judge Joe McCarville noted that he could not find enough reason to support the defendant's claim of self-defense.

According to police, the argument started near the intersection of Ring Road and 17th Avenue. When Rodriguez got out of the vehicle, he was allegedly shot by Jones, who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle. The bullet then went through the open door of the victim's car, ricocheted off the interior, and grazed the driver of the suspect's car, 74-year-old Paula Thomas.

Both victims were taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released.

Kansas City man given 1 year in shooting

Kan. — The Athletic Department at HutchCC was able to navigate the busiest semester ever thanks to the pandemic and have unprecedented success.

"We didn't know what to expect," said Athletic Director Josh Gooch. "I will tell you, it says a lot about the people we have at Hutchinson Community College. The coaches just stuck to the plan. Our college had a plan as far as the COVID stuff. This is just a result of everybody putting their heads down and working together to make the most of the situation."

HutchCC's football team won a national championship earlier this month and the men's golf squad brought home both the individual and team titles.

"If you really just kind of break it all down, you talk about our faculty, our staff, all the people in housing, athletic training, those are the boots on the ground people that really get me excited about Blue Dragon athletics," Gooch said. "They allow us to be successful day in and day out."

The work now is to figure out how to sustain the success and the community helps with that.

"It's the people that come out and support us," Gooch said. "The amount of people that give of their time to come and cheer on the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson is a unbelievable, special place to be, now more than ever, but we have to give credit to those who have come before us."

Gooch looked back to the work of Randy Stange, Jack Morris, Sam Butterfield and Charles Sesher in building the foundation for Blue Dragon athletics that makes the program second to none at the NJCAA level.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School Booster Club will host the fourth annual golf scramble fundraiser Saturday, July 24, at Carey Park.

The four-person scramble tees off at 9 a.m. The cost is $125 per person or $500 per team and is limited to 25 teams. Hole-in-one prizes and a raffle will be offered.&nbsp;

The booster club is also looking for sponsorships for the event. If you are interested, contact Kevin Armstrong at 620-200-4873.&nbsp;

HHS Booster Club golf event is July 24

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Superior Boiler has started production in their new facility. A small group from Richmond Virginia as well as a small local workforce began to manufacture the product line that is being moved to Hutchinson.

The move will be a slow one with equipment and personnel being brought in over time. The company hopes to have an official ribbon cutting on September 1.

The new facility, which measures 73,000 square feet, is located in the old Mega Manufacturing building just west of the current Superior facility.&nbsp;

The company announced in March of 2020 that it would relocate the Richmond facility which produces water tube boilers and was part of the purchase of English Boiler LLC in 2016.&nbsp;

At full strength, the new facility will employ about 50 new workers over the next three to five years.&nbsp;

Superior Boiler begins to open new facility

Kan. — June 14 is Flag Day and to observe the event, Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County is sponsoring a parade. This is similar to one they did this past fall.

"We just thought, what can we do for the facilities because no one could get out," said Andrea Siefkes with Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County. "We thought a drive-by caravan parade would be a great idea."

It went so well that they are bringing back that plan for Flag Day, but it will be slightly different.

"We'll have a designated parade route to show residents and staff how much we care for them and to let the veterans know how much we appreciate them. We are going to have two different groups, because when we did it in the fall, it took at least three hours, maybe three and a half."

People will leave at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the parking lot at The Trade Center at 1600 North Lorraine.

"We're having one route that will go to Good Samaritan, Wesley Towers and Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson," Siefkes said. "The other group will hit all the other care facilities in Hutchinson."

The public is welcome to participate in the parade and those planning to caravan are asked to RSVP by calling Siefkes at 620-665-2473. Participants are urged to decorate their vehicles as they deem appropriate.

Flag Day caravan to care facilities Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— OSHA has released its findings into an industrial accident at the Tyson Foods plant in Hutchinson in November of 2020.

Two contract workers were injured at the plant at 521 S. Main when ammonia was released from a refrigeration system. OSHA cited the company for five serious violations connected to the incident.&nbsp;

OSHA says Tyson failed to secure parts of the system that were being worked on causing the release of ammonia. It also states that Tyson did not take the necessary precautions in the room where the work was being done and failed to implement a respiratory program for an employee wearing a full face respirator to assist during the incident.&nbsp;

Another citation was handed down to the company for not implementing a line break procedure for the replacement of equipment on the refrigeration system and for not developing and implementing safe work practices to control hazards during operations. It also noted that the company did not provide an appropriate respirator for the employees based on the hazard to which the workers were exposed.

OHSA and the Department of Labor withdrew three of the citations and fined Tyson $40,959 and ordered Tyson to correct the violations no later than July 7 to avoid further penalties.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— A new support system to help those suffering from mental illness will celebrate its grand opening in Hutchinson next week. Milestone Clubhouse, will hold its Grand Opening Thursday, June 17, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm during Third Thursday in downtown Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Located at 206 North Main, the event is free and open to the public who are invited to come visit Milestone Clubhouse while enjoying light refreshments. Milestone Clubhouse staff, current members of the community support center and representatives from the Board of Directors will be available to provide information regarding membership during the open house.&nbsp;

Milestone Clubhouse, supported by Breakthrough Wichita, is based on the Clubhouse model that originated in a concept pioneered by Fountain House in New York City. Fountain House is committed to helping people with mental illness stay out of hospitals while achieving educational, financial, and vocational goals.&nbsp;

Milestone Clubhouse began through community collaborative conversations and efforts led by local mental health advocates, including United Way of Reno County and Horizons Mental Health Center. The primary goal is to provide social and economic inclusion which reverses the alarming trends of higher suicide, hospitalization and incarceration rates associated with mental illness.&nbsp;

Milestone Clubhouse is currently in the process of being certified by Clubhouse International. Should Milestone Clubhouse be granted certification, they stand to join over 300 local Clubhouses in more than 30 countries around the world. Clubhouse International certifies Clubhouses that offer people living with mental illness opportunities for friendship, employment, housing, education and access to medical and psychiatric services in a single caring and safe environment.&nbsp;

New mental health support group in Hutchinson

It’s a great time to get a head start on school physicals or stay up to date with a Kan Be Healthy Well-Child screenings along with routine immunizations. The Reno County Health Department is taking appointments now. Well-child visits are important for tracking growth and developmental milestones, discussing health concerns, and receiving scheduled vaccinations.

Kindergarteners should receive all required vaccines before starting school. Students entering 7th and 11th grades may also need additional vaccinations. Immunizations can be administered along with the COVID-19 vaccine for ages 12 and over. Eagle Radio's Adopt-A-Pet is Saturday

Kan. — With temperatures at their hottest thus far this year, Dr. Jonathan Austin, DVM wants to make sure pet owners work to keep their pets safe.

"We need to remember that our pets don't handle hot temperatures well, especially dogs who are used to being indoors," Austin said. "You need to be cautious with them in the sun and in the heat. They need shade, they need water, certainly, fresh cool water."

Check water bowls often, even for those outside pets that may be more used to the weather.

"The transitions between 100 degrees outdoors and a 72 degree home are going to be a little bit challenging for us and for them."

MANHATTAN, Kansas — The Kansas Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Kansas State University Land Use Survey Program, has published the 2021 Kansas Bluestem Pasture Survey, a summary of leases on bluestem pasture in the Flint Hills region of Kansas. The survey and report are released on a biennial basis.

The report details the average rates and terms of short summer season leases, ¾ summer season leases, full summer season leases, winter grazing leases and full year leases on bluestem pasture in 2021. The report also includes information on custom fence building rates in the Flint Hills region. Last published in 2019, the new report indicates leasing rates have increased for most contracts and bluestem pasture conditions have slightly declined. Prices in the report should not be regarded as official or established rates.

“Each region of Kansas has unique attributes to the agriculture sector. The native tallgrass region provides rich grazing opportunities for cattle producers. Data collected from survey respondents in the 14-county Flint Hills area can aid landowners and renters when entering into lease agreements,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “We are pleased to financially support this survey, and this tool is another example of how our agency works to provide useful data that supports the state’s agriculture industry.”

The format of the 2019 and 2021 Bluestem surveys are different than previous years, due to changes in question format to better reflect native tallgrass prairie use and leasing practices. Due to these changes, discussion on leasing rates are not directly comparable prior to 2019. Historical leasing rates can be found on older Bluestem Pasture Survey reports.

KDA Releases 2021 Kansas Bluestem Pasture Survey

Kan. — The Internal Revenue Service has started sending letters to more than 36 million American families who, based on tax returns filed with the agency, may be eligible to receive monthly Child Tax Credit payments starting in July.

"This is based on the change in the law which increased the amount of the Child Tax Credit for children under 6 and expanded the coverage to children who are ages 6 to 17," said Michael Devine with the IRS.

The letters are going to families who may be eligible based on information they included in either their 2019 or 2020 federal income tax return. If they qualify, families who are eligible for advance Child Tax Credit payments will receive a second, personalized letter listing an estimate of their monthly payment, which begins July 15.

"This can be up to $300 per month for each qualifying child under age 6, or $250 per month for each qualifying child age 6 to 17," Devine said. 

Most families do not need to take any action to get their payment. 

"There is more information on <a href="http://irs.gov">irs.gov</a>," Devine said. "We're increasing the number of tools that are available on the IRS website and pretty soon, there will be a child tax credit portal that people can use to change their income status."

Once the portal is live, if you qualify, but would rather get your credits in a lump sum along with your tax return, you can opt out of the new program.

IRS sending out initial letters to those who could get monthly Child Tax Credit payments

RENO COUNTY — Two people were injured when their motorcycles collided on Haven Road Wednesday night.

Reno County Sheriff's Officers were called to Haven Road and Trail West just after 10 p.m. where they found 15-year-old Devyn Yost of Bentley and 21-year-old Morgan Leid of Halstead. They were both riding motorcycles northbound on Haven Road when they collided.&nbsp;

Both were transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Captain Levi Blumanhourst tells Hutch Post that Leid had a broken leg, Yost just had some road rash. Both were wearing helmets. The accident is still under investigation.
