McPherson looking for project priorities

HUTCHINSON – Hutchinson High School teacher Amber Carithers will be inducted into the Wichita State University College of Applied Studies Hall of Fame on October 21, 2022.

Carithers is among eight other inductees for 2022 into the College of Applied Studies (CAS)&nbsp; Hall of Fame. Inductees come from various backgrounds, and they will be recognized for their accomplishments within their fields. According to the CAS Hall of Fame announcement, “The CAS Hall of Fame recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who have made a positive impact on the college at any point since its founding. The traits and qualities Hall of Fame members possess are reflective of the college’s core values of collaboration, discovery, diversity, integrity and leadership.”

Carithers was named a Kansas Teacher of the Year finalist for 2021 and has served as an English Language Arts teacher at Hutchinson High School for ten&nbsp;years. As a finalist, Carithers visited other districts with the Kansas Teacher of the Year team, and she was recognized by the Kansas State Senate in January 2022. Carithers also leads the new&nbsp;Teaching/Training pathway for high school students at Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy.&nbsp;

All nine inductees will be honored at a special banquet on October 21, 2022, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on the WSU campus.

HUTCHINSON – Interfaith Housing and Community Services announced Monday that Clint Nelson was selected as their new Chief Executive Officer. 

Nelson has been an integral part of Interfaith for the past sixteen years. Nelson was selected by the Interfaith Board of Directors to replace the retiring Lorna Moore.

Nelson joined Interfaith Housing Services in 2006 working primarily within the Rental program while also assisting with volunteer oversight and renovation projects. From 2008 to 2016 Nelson served as the lead Property/Asset Manager during rental program expansion into both Harper and Ford Counties. 

In 2017, Nelson became the Director of Housing Development with primary oversight of housing production, property acquisitions, negotiated contracts, and project grant writing. Nelson has played a key role in working through operational and financial strategies with the internal Leadership Team.

As part of the new leadership team, Interfaith also promoted Ashley Cain to Chief Financial Officer, Lacy Stauffacher to Chief Operations Officer, and Jeff Thomson to Chief Projects Officer.

Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman knows it will be an adjustment when the traffic light at 30th and Lucille is taken down later this month.

"We want everyone to be very cautious, especially at drop off time and dismissal time at Prairie Hills," Couchman said. "If you're traveling along that road during those hours, if you can find an alternative route to work, to free up any congestion, that wouldn't be needed, it might be a good idea until we can get that traffic flow pattern started again."

It will go back to 30th being a through street and stop signs on Lucille on both sides of the intersection.

"We, obviously, are also asking our parents to be very patient during pick up time," Couchman said. "Without the light, those left hand turns coming on to 30th are going to take some time."

Couchman said if they can get buses out of the lot, the traffic flow goes a lot faster. With school starting at PHMS at 7:45 a.m., things start to get busy early.

"About 7:20 a.m. to about 7:45 a.m., I would expect traffic to be very heavy along 30th and Lucille," Couchman said. "Dismissal is at 2:50 p.m. Really from about 2:30 p.m. to about 3:15 p.m., that time period, it will be heavy traffic."

Couchman said the last time she drove through at pickup time, even with the existing stoplight, traffic was backed up on 30th all the way to Apple Lane. Especially until young drivers figure out their most efficient route, it will be important to be patient with the process. 

August 23 at 8:30 a.m., new stop signs will be installed on Lucille and the temporary traffic signal at 30th and Lucille will be placed on flash, yellow flashing for 30th and red flashing for Lucille. The traffic signal will stay on flash until Aug. 30, at which time it will be removed.

Public Works says a recent traffic signal analysis of the intersection showed that the temporary traffic signal is no longer needed.

Couchman: Be 'very patient' during dropoff and pickup at PHMS

BUHLER, Kan. — The need for reliable, fiber internet across Kansas continues to propel IdeaTek Telcom in the ranks of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies, landing the broadband provider at 2,310 on the 2022 Inc. 5,000 list recently revealed by Inc. magazine. 

This is the ninth time IdeaTek has made the list. Last year, the company ranked 822. The list is based on three-year growth rates. To date, the company has deployed more than 4,000 miles of fiber and built 100 fixed wireless towers to serve customers in nearly 70 Kansas communities. 

Significant private investment paired with several state and federal broadband expansion programs has helped Ideatek grow. The company has tripled its workforce to 130, adding nearly 90 jobs in the past two years.

In May of this year, Ideatek was awarded a Broadband Acceleration Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to bring fiber to rural Seward County. 

The company also is working with several communities, including a public-private partnership with South Hutchinson to provide other opportunities for growth.

Hutchinson Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho said at least one hotel deal in Hutchinson is close to getting done.

"I am very excited about the conversations we've been having with a very proven developer who lives in Wichita," the mayor said. "In fact, we recently, I think on Tuesday, just had an executive session to kind of shore up the incentive package, so we should be voting on that, hopefully within the next month, which could put a new hotel in Hutchinson by 2024."

The mayor wouldn't give specifics on where the hotel would be.

"We think that this is going to be a really high quality product," the mayor said. "It's important to pick a good developer. We didn't necessarily make the right choice 15 years ago with the Atrium and so, we've just been very cautious about doing our due diligence. I know it's taking longer than anyone wants. We just want to make the right decision."

Right now, the city is going through code enforcement actions on the Atrium property, but if <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2017/07/07/%f0%9f%8e%a5-proposed-nuisance-abatement-of-former-ambassador-hotel-draws-owners-ire/">history in Hays is any guide</a>, owner Joshua Joseph hasn't always treated governing bodies with deference when it comes to his properties.

"Time will tell if the developer will abide by those violation requests, or if we'll just have to take care of them ourselves and put them on the property tax bill," the mayor said.

The Atrium had 220 rooms at its peak. The proposed hotel would be around 100 rooms.

Car seat day coming up Sept. 1

Hutchinson and Reno County celebrated 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

A combination of holding your breath and wild celebration is a part of the rollover to Y2K. Police guard banks and many watch to see if their computers will function. Once everything settled down, there was a lot of news in the 2000s, including 9/11, the Hutchinson gas explosions, and a scandal in the sheriff’s department. Efforts begin to save one of the city’s historic buildings, HutchCC and HHS get a beautiful new home for football and track, and one of the more high-profile trials begins when Max Ary is indicted. There's a new home for Eagle Communications and a major highway project begins. That, plus Siemens and more as we begin the new millennium on this edition of The Decades.

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades - 2000s

HARVEY COUNTY — A Buhler man was killed in an accident in rural Harvey County Saturday afternoon. 

The Harvey County Sheriff's Office says a car was traveling westbound in the 23600 block of West Dutch Avenue when it crossed the center line, colliding with an eastbound SUV.

The driver of the westbound car, 37-year-old Timothy Rutherford of Buhler was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not known why Rutherford's vehicle crossed the center line.

There were four occupants in the SUV. All received non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. One occupant was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.

Harvey County accident kills one, injures four others Saturday

Kan. — 
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson was in Hutchinson Friday to visit the Cosmosphere. The museum elicited a wow from him, but he's also seeing a lot of what's happening in space now as wow-worthy, too.

"Look what all is happening right in front of us," Nelson said. "The telescope, what it's teaching us. We're going to move an asteroid out of its trajectory. We're going back to the moon after 50 years. We are doing all kinds of science on the International Space Station. We've got major cancer research and pharmaceutical research that is going on, using 0G."

He's positive about the relationship that the two space programs of Russia and the U.S. can have, even as the conflict with Ukraine makes things more difficult on Earth.

"The civilian space program, in this case, the operation of the International Space Station that was done with Russia and the United States building it, and therefore necessary to operate it, continues in a very professional manner," Nelson said. "The astronauts and the cosmonauts are getting along."

The next big thing for NASA is the Artemis I test launch August 29.

"We're going to stress it, before we put humans on it," Nelson said. "We are going back to the moon and then that is just the beginning of going back to learn, to live, to work, to create the systems and the technology so that we can send humans to Mars."

The launch countdown for Artemis I will begin Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10:23 a.m.

The temporary planning contractor for the City of Hutchinson, Matt Williams, AICP from PEC will meet with the Planning Commission on Tuesday and talk to them about several subjects, including solar panels.  

Looking at the current regulations, they say that no solar panel shall be constructed within the residential zoning jurisdiction of the City of Hutchinson unless a zoning certificate is approved and issued by the zoning administrator and is constructed in conformance with the building permit and conform to the required front, side and rear lot setback requirements except that a solar panel which is attached to an integral part of the principal building may project two feet into the front yard; six feet into the rear yard; and two feet into the side yard; and a solar panel which is freestanding may be located only in the rear yard provided it does not exceed six feet in height and is located not less than five feet from the rear lot line and not closer than one foot to any existing easement as measured from the closest point of the structure including its foundation and anchorage, nor shall the solar panel be located in the side yard or front yard setback.

Also on the agenda is the Borders preliminary and final plat, which Williams hopes to have finished in time for the meeting.

Tuesday's Hutchinson Planning Commission meeting is at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at 125 E Avenue B.

On the agenda is retirement of licensed staff, resignation of classified staff, a staff transfer, an update to the classified wage schedule, and action on contracted services and a certified supplemental stipend and an additional supplemental coaching position.

The meeting will take place at 12:15 p.m. in the Union Valley Elementary School in Hutchinson.

USD 313 to hold special board meeting Monday afternoon

The Hutchinson Landmarks Commission will receive an update on the city's attempt to get a grant for a study on what can be done with Memorial Hall through the Historic Preservation Fund as part of its meeting on Thursday. 

A meeting was due to happen last month with firms interested in putting together a preservation and reuse plan identifying best possible uses in the future that would make Memorial Hall a year around asset to the community. This grant must maintain the historic character of the building.

The main issue community members see as a concern with the hall is getting air conditioning in the building and a new roof.

The Landmarks Commission is also discussing the Historic Preservation Ordinance, which was last updated in 2016. 

The Hutchinson Landmarks Commission will meet Thursday, August 25 at 4:00 p.m. in the City Council Conference Room at 125 East Avenue B.

Landmarks Commission to receive grant update Thursday

The last decade of the 1900s is upon us in our latest edition of The Decades. The 1990s brought many things from the past back to life, including the Liberty Bell 7 and the reopening of one of Hutchinson's greatest treasures in the Fox Theatre. It also saw one of the first businesses in Hutchinson absorbed into the corporate world, a new organization to benefit boys and girls in Hutchinson and a new visitors center at Dillon Nature Center. The Blue Dragons won a national title and a blackbird doesn’t fly to Hutchinson, but crawls in on a semi. All that and more on this edition of The Decades.

1990:&nbsp;The pavilion at the Farmers Market was constructed and named the Ontjes Pavilion.

The Hutchinson Community Foundation is formed to help provide philanthropic opportunities within the community.

Prominent Hutchinson businessmen are arrested in a major drug bust.

1993:&nbsp;A family in Lerado is murdered before their home is burned to the ground to hide the crime. Paul Kiser is convicted and sentenced to 51 years in prison, much to the shock of the victims' family members.

The Reno County Museum director quits when the county commission refuses to implement tax that was approved by voters.

Haven's Phillip Fishburn is named ag secretary for the state of Kansas.

The Cosmosphere begins plans for major expansion. The building is constructed around an SR-71 that is tucked in and then shrinkwrapped to protect it.

Hutchinson and Reno County celebrated 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.<figure>

 </figure>As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.The last decade of the 1900s is upon us in our latest edition of The Decades. The 1990s brought many things from the past back to life, including the Liberty Bell 7 and the reopening of one of Hutchinson's greatest treasures in the Fox Theatre. It also saw one of the first businesses in Hutchinson absorbed into the corporate world, a new organization to benefit boys and girls in Hutchinson and a new visitors center at Dillon Nature Center. The Blue Dragons won a national title and a blackbird doesn’t fly to Hutchinson, but crawls in on a semi. All that and more on this edition of The Decades.1990:&nbsp;The pavilion at the Farmers Market was constructed and named the Ontjes Pavilion.<figure>
