Hutchinson and Reno County will celebrate 150 years during Third Thursday today. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

As we reached the 100th year of Hutchinson, many things had changed. Airline service came and went from the area once again, two hospitals combined into one entity, and several of the once-proud drive-ins closed. It was also the start of what would become one of the great museums in the nation. All that and Evel Knievel, too, as we look&nbsp; back at the 1970s on this edition of The Decades.

1970:&nbsp;Residents in what becomes known as the King's Garden addition object to the city’s annexation of the land around Trinity High School.

Big Bird, Bert, Ernie and the rest of Sesame Street hit the airwaves as KPTS public television begins operation.

Air Midwest begins offering six flights out of Hutchinson.

Many know about it but few talk about it — the Medora nudist colony boasts having 90 members.

St. Elizabeth's Hospital and Grace Hospital merge to become the Hutchinson Hospital Corporation.

Twenty-three acres of land that was once Riversbanks Orchards and then the Dillon Recreation Center is deeded over to Hutch Rec for the Dillon Nature Center.

Amtrak Begins passenger service in Hutchinson with The Southwest Limited.

Heavy snowfall hits the area, bringing schools and businesses to a standstill.

1971:&nbsp;Hutchinson celebrates its 100 birthday. The city of Hutchinson was founded in 1871 when frontiersman Clinton "C.C." Hutchinson contracted with the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atchison,_Topeka_and_Santa_Fe_Railway">Santa Fe Railway</a>&nbsp;to make a town at the railroad's crossing over the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_River">Arkansas River</a>. The town actually sprang up about one-half mile north on the banks of Cow Creek where a few houses already existed.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The South Hutchinson High Rise Apartments open to serve low-income residents.

Another blizzard hits the area, shutting down schools, highways and businesses for days.

U.S. 50 is realigned around Hutchinson all the way to Sylvia. 4th Avenue used to be a part of Highway 50.

Wesley Towers opens for service to senior residents.

Two people are killed when a morning fire sweeps through Wiley’s Home Furnishings.

The new Law Enforcement Center opened just west of the courthouse.

Still popular today, the first Buhler Fall Frolic was held.

Gus Leonida, who became known for his selling of war bonds during WWII, dies.

Constantine "Gus" Leonida in his World War I Navy uniform. Leonida was a Hutchinson restaurateur {Leonida's Hollywood Grill in downtown Hutchinson} and became famous for selling more war bonds than any other individual during World War II.

1972:&nbsp;Dallas Crable becomes the first black member of the Hutchinson City Commission.

Football and basketball coaches are fired from Nickerson High School. Students protest to no avail.

Reno County Health Department is established.

Fire destroys the Bella Vista mobile home factory at HABIT. The county and HABIT argue about responsibility for protection.

Partridge High School closes; students bused to Haven.

Ten members of the Home Builders Association of Hutchinson attend the national conference in Houston.

Ray Rose, former leader of Dillons stores and Hutchinson resident, becomes president of King Soopers. Both are now owned by Kroger.

Jim Fountain begins 20-year run as Reno County sheriff.

Pegues expands by 40 thousand square feet downtown.

1973:&nbsp;Cable television comes to Hutchinson.

John Dunn of Hutchinson is one of the first POWs in Vietnam to return home upon signing of the cease fire during the Vietnam War.

Major flooding hits areas along Cow Creek with water hanging around for two weeks.

A giant motorcycle rally is held in Hutchinson with more than 9,000 motorcycles and more than 10,000 spectators.

USD 308 superintendent resigns after an investigation into taking kickbacks from a dairy company providing milk for the school district. Charges are eventually brought.

Bob Bottomley Motors opens along K-61 Highway and becomes one of the first businesses to open east of K-61 in what would eventually become a large business area between 11th and 17th avenues.

One of the worst ice storms in 20 years hits the area, shutting down power to the city.

Construction begins on the Hutchinson Zoo, now a part of the city parks department.

Mennonite Friendship Communities begins service in South Hutchinson.

A popular hangout and turnaround while dragging Main in Hutchinson, Sandy’s Drive-In closes and eventually becomes Hardee’s.

1974:&nbsp;Friendship Meals begins service to those in need.

Hutchinson High School wins the boys state basketball championship. They did it again in 1975.

Touch-tone phones replace dial-up telephones.

The streaking fad comes to Hutchinson when three HutchCC students streak down Plum Street.

Emancipation Day Parade comes back again after 23 years.

Buhler PRIDE Committee formed to find better recreational opportunities for residents. Their efforts are still a part of the city today with Wheatland Park.

1975:&nbsp;Women first elected to the Buhler City Council.

A new hospital is built combining both Grace Hospital and St. Elizabeth's Hospital into one 200-bed facility at 23rd and Waldron.

Hutchinson USD 308 is embroiled in controversy with NAACP charges of discrimination and fraud. The district has troubled negotiations with the teachers union and the district suffers low test scores.

1976:&nbsp;Hutch High girls win the state basketball championship.

The new viaduct opens over the Santa Fe railroad yard on Airport Road.

Reno County Council on Aging begins bus service for the disabled and elderly. Today it is known as RCAT and is full-service to all.

In an effort to better aid in rescue from a car accident, Reno County purchases its first jaws of life apparatus.

1977:&nbsp;The gas shortage of 2021 wasn’t the first of its kind as schools closed in 1977 due to a shortage of natural gas supplies.

The city of Nickerson contracts with the Reno County Sheriff’s Department to police the city. The city eventually returned to having its own force, only to abolish it again.

John Daveline becomes president of the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce and becomes the longest serving president holding that position until 2006.

Victory Village for wayward girls is closed after allegations of physical abuse.

HutchCC allows coed visits in dorms for the first time.

1978:&nbsp;They come and they go, the city finally removed parking meters for good in the downtown area.

The reformatory purchased bloodhounds to help track escapees.

The Reno County Genealogical Society is formed.

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades - 1970s

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The formal charges filed against former Hutchinson police officer Todd Allen include 17 felonies and seven more misdemeanors.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/ad67f49d-358d-40ef-96e9-5e481e966518">Allen was arrested Wednesday afternoon and is charged with two counts of rape or alternative counts of aggravated sexual battery</a>. Three counts of attempted rape or alternative counts of aggravated sexual battery, two more counts of aggravated sexual battery, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of attempted aggravated sexual battery. The two counts of rape are level one person felonies.

Allen also faces five counts of breach of privacy and two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery. He is currently free on a $250,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.

Allen free on bond, awaiting next court appearance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair says its inaugural Pub Crawl went over so well, it has decided to double the fun. Visitors will now have two dates, two themed crawls and two concerts to add to the festivities of the fair.

The first is the “My Town Pub Crawl" with the Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry concert.

The second event is Thursday, Sept. 15, with the "Pub Rockers Pub Crawl" with the Great White &amp; Quiet Riot concert.&nbsp;

The registration deadline for both crawls is Saturday, Aug. 20.

Two pub crawls part of this year's Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson began sending out notices to water customers informing them of a Ground Water rule violation that happened earlier in the summer.&nbsp;

The violation was caused by a chlorine feeder failure that resulted in chlorine not being added to the city’s water supply. Once the operator responded to the alarm, flow was reduced to the contact basin to increase contact time, and another feeder was started. Proper chlorine levels were restored in four hours and 15 minutes.&nbsp;

The failed chlorine feeder was repaired the day after the incident. The problem was resolved on the day of the violation and the facility is back in compliance with the regulation. Chlorine levels in the distribution system did not drop below required levels, according to the release from the city.

The city says this is not an emergency and there is no need to boil water or buy bottled water. If you have specific health concerns, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you should seek advice from your health care provider. No evidence of contamination in, or other health threats to, the water were detected and the city has been back to maintaining the required level of treatment to the water since the day of the incident.

Hutchinson issued water system violation

Kan. — As part of the agenda for the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, a date must be set to settle the fence dispute between two Reno County landowners.

Lauren and Wayne Sill of 2319 North Mayfield Road have requested a fence viewing to resolve a boundary dispute with adjacent neighbors Christopher and Nicole Schroeder at 2509 North Mayfield Road.

According to a letter from Lauren and Wayne Sill provided to commissioners as part of their agenda documents, they bought the land in 2017 and exchanged quit claim deeds with previous owners to correct two boundary lines and address issues with the location of the previous owners driveway.

The Sills say in their letter that they built a fence on the north-south boundary and took out trees and brush for fire mitigation. They say they did their best to stay within three feet of the boundary.

The Schroeders say the fence isn't where it should be and that the Sills left debris on their property and damaged their mower. The Sills say they got a demand letter from the Schroeders last month that asks for money for the mower damage and to repair the fence. The Sills are asking that if a fence is built, that the cost is shared between the two.

County Counselor Patrick Hoffman advises the board that the commission is allowed to delegate the fence viewing to a single commissioner or to another person, but an official date must be set so that legal notification can be sent. Setting that date is the item on Tuesday's agenda.

Commissioners asked to hold 'fence viewing' to resolve dispute

Even though we ended up a little over budget, rather than having to remove locations, the Housing Commission transferred an additional $7000 to help us complete all of the identified properties."

Areas along 10th Ave, Monroe St, 13th Ave and 5th Ave have been selected for sidewalk repairs.

"The construction is expected to take place through the first two weeks of October," Schenk said. "We have created a yard sign that we'll place in front of the houses to try and help bring awareness to this new and exciting program."

In total, about $29,700 will be invested in this program this fall.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Many years ago, Hutchinson had the annual Pow Wow celebration. The celebration was so popular that more than 125,000 people would come celebrate. It included a mile-long meal and party.&nbsp;

That tradition is back Thursday evening with the city's sesquicentennial celebration. Thursday evening, Hutchinson will relive the mile-long celebration in a different way with food, games and other activities held in each block, stretching one mile from Avenue C through 9th Avenue.

If you want to be a part of the 150th birthday photo, you need to be in front of Crow &amp; Co. around 5:30 p.m. The photo-op starts around 5:45. If you participate in the photo, you will receive a raffle ticket for the Grand Prize 150th Celebration Gift Basket. Main will be closed from 10th Avenue to Avenue C starting at 4 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce Blue Interest Survey will close today. The Chamber is asking interested parties to complete the survey. Chamber insurance survey ends today

HARVEY COUNTY—A Newton man was injured in an accident just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a homemade golf cart driven by 22-year-old Cale M. Lasiter of Newton was eastbound at 1701 James Court in Newton when Lasiter fell off the vehicle. The golf car left the roadway to the left, overturned and came to rest in a driveway.

EMS transported Lasiter to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A former Hutchinson police lieutenant has been arrested on suspicion of 24 different counts including rape, kidnapping and sexual battery.

A press conference was held Wednesday afternoon concerning 51-year-old Todd Wade Allen, who was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on a bond of $250,000.

"When I came into the agency in 2018, shortly thereafter, within three weeks, we had a sexual assault that occurred in one of our parks here in the city of Hutchinson," police chief Jeff Hooper said. "At that time, I was notified by my staff that assault was related to a series of assaults that had been occurring in the city of Hutchinson since 2012. I was also made aware that, to that point, the police department had not released any details to the public. On November 6, 2018, I held a press conference in reference to the series of sexual assaults that were occurring in our community, mostly designed to alert the public of potential dangers to our community and safety precautions they could take, should they encounter another incident that was similar."

It was soon after that 2018 press conference that Allen resigned voluntarily from the department.

"Here most recently, we started having a series of prowler calls and window peeping calls that were occurring in Hutchinson. That information was passed along to our special operations bureau and, more specifically, to our criminal intelligence unit, who set out information in regard to certain patterns of crime, and particular ways that we thought we could combat those prowler calls and window peeping calls," Hooper said.

It was after one of those calls that Allen was detained and questioned. That prompted the department to put the incidents together.

"I am appalled and disgusted that somebody who is a suspect in these type of crimes and this type of behavior ever wore the uniform and this badge that I am honored to pin on my chest every day," Hooper said. "But, I am very proud of this administration and all the men and women that diligently worked on these cases over the last decade and who, today, brought Mr. Allen to justice."

The potential counts include five counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, nine counts of aggravated sexual battery and five counts of breach of privacy.

Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton reminded the media at Wednesday's press conference that the arrest is just that, and that any suspect has to be dealt with through the justice system and is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Former Hutchinson police officer arrested on sex crime charges

Hutchinson and Reno County will celebrate 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

Many changes were a part of the 1960s, including a new home for Hutchinson High School, air passenger service in Hutchinson and the start of what is now one of the premier museums in the United States. That and more as we look back on the 1960s.

1960:&nbsp;Dillons Stores looks for an easier way for shoppers who need just a few things when it opens its first Kwik Shop. The partnership continues through 2018 when Kroger sold off the chain.&nbsp;

There are conflicting dates as to when this project was completed, but in 1961, the Farmers Commission grain elevator was in full operation. It is still the second-longest single-head house elevator in the world.

1961:&nbsp;The Hutchinson Planetarium is opened by Patty Carey in a chicken coop at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Her love of space and the vision of others is now on full display at the Cosmosphere, which is now one of the premier space museums in the world. The museum is one of just two that has a spacecraft flown in all three Cold War programs: Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.

In an effort to preserve the history of Hutchinson and Reno County, the Reno County Historical Society was formed.

Although you still have to stand in line for some state and county business, it was in 1961 that the state began to mail out license plates to residents.

A military plane crashes in Reno County. Crews were able to parachute to safety.

Hutchinson taxpayers form the Taxpayers League to promote better government.

1962:&nbsp;Fairfield High School opened in Abbyville. Today it is located just north of the community of Langdon.

Softball-sized hail hammers the area, causing more than $6 million in damages. The total would be $55 million in 2021.

Although it is well within the city limits today, Union Valley residents fought against annexation by the city in 1962.

Construction of a dam begins in southern Reno County in what would eventually become Cheney Reservoir.

After standing proud in Hutchinson for so many years, the Bisonte Hotel catches fire during demolition, bringing a quick end to the hotel's demise.&nbsp;

Flooding hits the town of Nickerson as residents are forced to use sandbags to protect property.

The Ultra Van powered by a Corvair engine and transaxle was designed by David Peterson in the early '60s. These units were produced in limited quantities by Ultra, Inc. of Hutchinson, Kansas, until June of 1970.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hutchinson News was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1965.

After years of military service, the old naval base has new life as it becomes the Hutchinson Air Base Industrial Tract. Today it is still home to various industries, The Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and a popular glider port.

Hutchinson Junior College is taken under the reins of the state. The college had been run as a division of the Hutchinson School District. The college and the high school still have a close working relationship today.

Unable to secure more space downtown, Sears builds the Sears Shopping Plaza at the corner of 1st and Adams.

 </figure>As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.Many changes were a part of the 1960s, including a new home for Hutchinson High School, air passenger service in Hutchinson and the start of what is now one of the premier museums in the United States. That and more as we look back on the 1960s.1960:&nbsp;Dillons Stores looks for an easier way for shoppers who need just a few things when it opens its first Kwik Shop. The partnership continues through 2018 when Kroger sold off the chain.&nbsp;<figure>

Photo courtesy of Steve Harmon.1961:&nbsp;The Hutchinson Planetarium is opened by Patty Carey in a chicken coop at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Her love of space and the vision of others is now on full display at the Cosmosphere, which is now one of the premier space museums in the world. The museum is one of just two that has a spacecraft flown in all three Cold War programs: Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.<figure>

Photo courtesy of Steve Harmon.In an effort to preserve the history of Hutchinson and Reno County, the Reno County Historical Society was formed.Although you still have to stand in line for some state and county business, it was in 1961 that the state began to mail out license plates to residents.A military plane crashes in Reno County. Crews were able to parachute to safety.Hutchinson taxpayers form the Taxpayers League to promote better government.1962:&nbsp;Fairfield High School opened in Abbyville. Today it is located just north of the community of Langdon.<figure>

 </figure>Softball-sized hail hammers the area, causing more than $6 million in damages. The total would be $55 million in 2021.Although it is well within the city limits today, Union Valley residents fought against annexation by the city in 1962.Construction of a dam begins in southern Reno County in what would eventually become Cheney Reservoir.<figure>

Truman speaks at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;1963:&nbsp;Many great events have come and gone from Reno County, but many still stand today, including the Abbyville Frontier Days Rodeo, which started in 1963.The first Reno County Museum opened in 1963. The museum was located in several rooms of the home of Goldie Maupin, who was president of the historical society at that time.The first Reno County 4H fair was held.Consolidation of school districts continues as county districts are redrawn again.IRS agents raid the Eagles Club and seize slot machines.More than 48,000 residents receive the Sabin polio vaccine in an effort to eradicate infantile paralysis.<figure>

Photo courtesy of Steve Harmon.1964:&nbsp;Still entertaining today, the Hutchinson Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1964.As consolidation of school districts continues, voters in Arlington approve the closing of Arlington High School.The police department makes the decision to stop escorting funeral processions.&nbsp;Dog owners are unhappy with the city’s new ordinance that requires all dogs to be in a fenced yard or on a leash.As the Cold War escalates, Kansas State University advises the public about when it would be safe to exit a fallout shelter if the U.S. were attacked.1965:&nbsp;Trinity High School is built at 17th and Lorraine.<figure>

Photo courtesy of Steve Harmon.After standing proud in Hutchinson for so many years, the Bisonte Hotel catches fire during demolition, bringing a quick end to the hotel's demise.&nbsp;Flooding hits the town of Nickerson as residents are forced to use sandbags to protect property.The Ultra Van powered by a Corvair engine and transaxle was designed by David Peterson in the early '60s. These units were produced in limited quantities by Ultra, Inc. of Hutchinson, Kansas, until June of 1970.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

The train travels 78 miles before it is derailed in the small town of Kinsley.Wheat continues to be the crop in Reno County with a record 11.4 million bushels harvested.Reno County servicemen write home about the horrors of the Vietnam War as local casualties increase.&nbsp;USD 312 patrons approve a $1 million bond issue to build a new high school.A popular event still held each year in Nickerson, the first Klear Nearly Days event is held in 1968.<figure>

 </figure>The Fair Housing Ordinance was passed by the city of Hutchinson, outlawing discrimination in housing.The Hutchinson Community College debate team wins the national title.&nbsp;Thousands of trees die from Dutch elm disease.The reformatory supervisor resigns after months of controversy over financial irregularities and an investigation by the governor's panel.1969:&nbsp;What might have been for Hutchinson, no one will ever know for sure, but the new interstate system route does not go through Hutchinson, instead taking a route to the east through Newton.The Board of Trade diminishes use of the Wiley Building, eventually closing. When the Wiley Building was renovated, 2013 papers, maps and most everything that was a part of the board was still there.<figure>
