HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday approved the temporary use of local health department funds to keep the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program operating as federal funding remains delayed due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Reno County WIC Coordinator Heather Peterson, RDN, LD told commissioners that while the federal fiscal year began Oct. 1, the federal government has yet to release its planned allocations for the program.

“Each state is allowed to continue offering food benefits for families until their federal food dollars are depleted,” Peterson said. “For Kansas, the state agency anticipates having funds to last until Oct. 31, but they’re hopeful that will extend into part of November.”

Peterson said the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) provided Reno County with enough money to cover about eight days of staff costs, which would expire this week. Without local support, the county’s WIC office could be forced to halt services before federal dollars resume.

Commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the Reno County Health Department to use its Public Health Fund 003 to cover staffing expenses until the federal government restores funding or the state’s WIC food allocation runs out.

County Commissioner Randy Parks made the motion to approve the measure, sharing a personal reflection on the program’s importance.

“We started a family pretty young,” Parks said. “WIC was a help to us at one time as well.”

Peterson emphasized the program’s long-standing impact on community health and the local economy. Reno County WIC serves more than 1,400 participants each month, providing nutritional support, education and health screenings for women, infants and children up to age 5. She said the program has helped identify and treat cases of severe anemia in children and connects families with local resources.

“WIC provides healthy foods for growing families and helps ensure children are developing properly,” Peterson said. “Each year, about $1 million in WIC benefits are used at six local vendors here in Reno County.”

Health Department Director Karla Nichols confirmed the department’s fund has adequate resources and said using it would not place an additional burden on taxpayers.

The motion passed 5–0, with Commissioners Parks, Vincent, Winger, Hirst and Chairman Bogner all voting in favor.

Reno County approves funding to keep WIC program running during shutdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Eagle Media’s Hutchinson radio stations and digital teams brought home multiple statewide honors as the Kansas Association of Broadcasters presented its annual Station Awards during the KAB Conference on Oct. 6.

Competing in the Medium Market Radio division, Eagle Media stations KHUT (102.9 FM), KHMY (93.1 FM) and KWBW (1450 AM/98.5 FM) were recognized for excellence in production, promotion, and on-air programming.

KHUT led the way with three first-place awards and a second-place finish. Daren Dunn and Ashley Weve earned Best Commercial Campaign for their Strataca series, while Weve, Dunn, Max Bringle, Karl Sneath and the Eagle Media team also claimed first in Multimedia Promotional or Commercial Announcements for another Strataca project. Dunn and Weve added another first-place honor in Station Promotion Announcement for their Allen Samuels “Spotlight A Hero” campaign.

A second-place plaque went to the team of Colleen Floyd, Miriam Yoder, Weve and Sneath for their Willie Johnson Ford multimedia spot.

KHMY’s Daren Dunn in the Morning earned honorable mention in Best Morning Show, while KWBW received two honorable mentions, one in Sports Play-by-Play for its broadcast of the NJCAA Football National Championship, called by Sean Boston and Dunn, and another for Station Excellence, recognizing the collective work of the KWBW staff in news, sports and public service.

The study found that a majority of producers who planted cover crops or used no-till methods — both designed to reduce erosion, improve soil health, and limit nutrient runoff — discontinued those practices within a year. 

In particular, most farmers who used cover crops one season had stopped using them by the next.

Ag Minute: Conservation farming

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson and Reno County CROP Hunger Walk returns this Sunday, October 12, at Rice Park, uniting local residents in a mission to fight hunger both at home and around the world.

Participants will gather at 1:30 p.m. at the Rice Park shelter to register, pack hygiene kits for disaster relief, and then set off on a walk of up to three miles beginning at 2 p.m. The event is one of more than 1,300 CROP Hunger Walks held nationwide each year through Church World Service (CWS), a faith-based humanitarian organization supporting hunger relief and agricultural development globally.

“We walk because they must walk — for food, for water, for safety,” said longtime local volunteer and event organizer Eileen Porter, who has been involved in the CROP Hunger Walk for nearly 50 years. “This is our way of standing in solidarity with people around the world who struggle every day to meet their basic needs.”

A quarter of all funds raised will remain in Reno County to support two local hunger-fighting agencies — the Christian Soup Ministry and the Reno County Food Bank.

The Christian Soup Ministry, led by Stanley Murdoch, serves about 120 meals four days a week and provides home-delivered meals to roughly 65 individuals referred through medical programs. Rising food costs and cuts in federal commodity programs have increased the organization’s expenses. “They spend six to seven hundred dollars a month just on meat, milk, eggs, and produce,” Porter noted.

The Reno County Food Bank, directed by Penny Taapkin, serves between 1,700 and 1,900 people monthly — an increase of up to 10 percent over last year. About 15 percent of the families served are new each month. In addition to the Hutchinson location, the Food Bank also supports smaller sites in Arlington, Turon, Sylvia, and Pretty Prairie.

“These local agencies are lifelines,” Porter said. “We’re seeing more families moving in together, larger households, and greater need than ever before.”

Seventy-five percent of proceeds from the walk will support Church World Service’s international programs. Funds help small farmers gain access to better seed, clean water, livestock, and agricultural training.

“Church World Service helps communities dig wells, start small livestock farms, and improve food security,” Porter said. “For example, just $22 can provide chickens to a family in Kenya, helping them produce eggs and income for their community.”

The walk begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rice Park Shelter, 44 Swarens Street in Hutchinson. Families, youth groups, and community members are encouraged to join, bring water, and walk as far as they wish. Donations of cash or checks made out to CWS/CROP will be accepted at the event.

Those unable to attend can contribute online or mail donations to Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, Hutchinson, KS 67502.

“This is a great family activity,” Porter said. “We’re walking together for a cause that truly matters — helping our neighbors near and far.”

The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday evening advanced several major development and infrastructure items — including approval of the city’s first upper-story Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) for the redevelopment of the historic Landmark Building at Fifth and Main. 

Landmark Apartments RHID Approved

Dave Sotelo, the city’s Director of Strategic Growth, presented the plan for the Landmark Reinvestment Housing Incentive District, a Kansas program designed to help developers convert unused upper floors of downtown buildings into housing. 

“This is our first upper-story RHID,” Sotelo said. “When someone invests in turning upper floors into apartments or lofts, the property value increases. The added property tax — the ‘tax increment’ — is then set aside for 25 years to reimburse the developer for eligible housing construction costs.” 

Sotelo noted that the City Council declared a housing shortage in January 2025, a necessary step to qualify for the RHID program. The Kansas Secretary of Commerce later approved the district in March and reaffirmed its eligibility in July. 

Developer Justin Parjan of Pomeroy Development said construction is progressing rapidly. “We’re over halfway through drywall,” he said. “NBC and the local subcontractors have done fantastic work. This will be my third upper-story RHID project in Kansas, and I’ve been blown away by the progress here in Hutchinson.” 

He added that the project’s “capital stack” — its mix of funding sources — includes multiple layers: developer equity, long-term debt, and incentives such as Kansas Housing Investor Tax Credits, a local ARPA housing grant, and a State Heritage Trust Fund grant. 

Following a public hearing with no opposition, the council unanimously approved the ordinance establishing the district and development agreement. A 30-day protest period will now open for the county and school district, the only taxing entities eligible to formally object. 

Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades: $18 Million Plan

City Engineer Evan Patterson presented a public hearing on Project No. 1 — Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements, part of the city’s State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan application to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). 

Patterson said the improvements target aging and high-risk components at the wastewater treatment plant, many of which are original to the facility. The $18 million project includes: •&nbsp; Replacement of influent pumps •&nbsp; Electrical and safety upgrades to the digester complex •&nbsp; Roof and mold repairs at the administration building •&nbsp; Replacement of centrifuge equipment •&nbsp; Headworks upgrades for grit and rag screening •&nbsp; Clarifier and sludge system rehabilitation

“These are the items rated either ‘poor’ or ‘emergency,’” Patterson said. “They’re essential whether we decide to rehabilitate this plant or eventually build a new one.” 

Patterson said the city plans to apply for a 20-year SRF loan at 60% of market interest rates. The loan would be repaid through future sewer rate adjustments estimated at $3.40 to $6.80 per month for an average household. 

The council approved the resolution authorizing the loan application. Patterson noted that final design and construction would take several years to complete. 

Sewer Lining Project to Extend Infrastructure Life

A second SRF application, Project No. 2 — Sanitary Sewer Collection System Rehabilitation, was also approved. The $2 million project will line approximately one mile of existing sewer mains along F Street and Van Buren Street, plus rehabilitate 17 manholes. 

Patterson explained that the process involves inserting a flexible liner into the existing pipe, inflating it, and curing it in place. “You’re not replacing the pipe — you’re giving it a new interior that extends its life by about 30 years,” he said. “It also avoids major street excavation.” 

Replacing the same pipe would have cost about $5.5 million, he said, making the lining option a cost-effective alternative. The project will also be funded through sewer utility rates, with an average monthly impact of 30 to 60 cents per customer. 

Unsafe Structures and Parks Updates

Building Official Jason Lady provided updates on six properties previously declared unsafe or dangerous. Several property owners have made progress toward repairs or demolition, while others will move toward city-led action if no improvements are made by December. 

Later in the meeting, Parks and Facilities Director Justin Combs presented plans to replace the aging playground at Fairgrounds Park with a new two-to-five-year-old play structure, shaded area, and poured-in-place safety surface. The project cost of $161,000 was made possible through a vendor grant and budget savings. 

The council also heard extensive discussion on future pickleball court improvements at Rice Park. Players advocated for resurfacing and better lighting to make the courts usable after dark. City staff agreed to review lighting options and potential upgrades before the next budget cycle.

This will be my third upper-story RHID project in Kansas, and I’ve been blown away by the progress here in Hutchinson.” He added that the project’s “capital stack” — its mix of funding sources — includes multiple layers: developer equity, long-term debt, and incentives such as Kansas Housing Investor Tax Credits, a local ARPA housing grant, and a State Heritage Trust Fund grant. Following a public hearing with no opposition, the council unanimously approved the ordinance establishing the district and development agreement. A 30-day protest period will now open for the county and school district, the only taxing entities eligible to formally object. Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades: $18 Million Plan City Engineer Evan Patterson presented a public hearing on Project No. 1 — Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements, part of the city’s State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan application to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Patterson said the improvements target aging and high-risk components at the wastewater treatment plant, many of which are original to the facility. The $18 million project includes: •&nbsp; Replacement of influent pumps •&nbsp; Electrical and safety upgrades to the digester complex •&nbsp; Roof and mold repairs at the administration building •&nbsp; Replacement of centrifuge equipment •&nbsp; Headworks upgrades for grit and rag screening •&nbsp; Clarifier and sludge system rehabilitation “These are the items rated either ‘poor’ or ‘emergency,’” Patterson said. “They’re essential whether we decide to rehabilitate this plant or eventually build a new one.” Patterson said the city plans to apply for a 20-year SRF loan at 60% of market interest rates. The loan would be repaid through future sewer rate adjustments estimated at $3.40 to $6.80 per month for an average household. The council approved the resolution authorizing the loan application. Patterson noted that final design and construction would take several years to complete. Sewer Lining Project to Extend Infrastructure Life A second SRF application, Project No. 2 — Sanitary Sewer Collection System Rehabilitation, was also approved. The $2 million project will line approximately one mile of existing sewer mains along F Street and Van Buren Street, plus rehabilitate 17 manholes. Patterson explained that the process involves inserting a flexible liner into the existing pipe, inflating it, and curing it in place. “You’re not replacing the pipe — you’re giving it a new interior that extends its life by about 30 years,” he said. “It also avoids major street excavation.” Replacing the same pipe would have cost about $5.5 million, he said, making the lining option a cost-effective alternative. The project will also be funded through sewer utility rates, with an average monthly impact of 30 to 60 cents per customer. Unsafe Structures and Parks Updates Building Official Jason Lady provided updates on six properties previously declared unsafe or dangerous. Several property owners have made progress toward repairs or demolition, while others will move toward city-led action if no improvements are made by December. Later in the meeting, Parks and Facilities Director Justin Combs presented plans to replace the aging playground at Fairgrounds Park with a new two-to-five-year-old play structure, shaded area, and poured-in-place safety surface. The project cost of $161,000 was made possible through a vendor grant and budget savings. The council also heard extensive discussion on future pickleball court improvements at Rice Park. Players advocated for resurfacing and better lighting to make the courts usable after dark. City staff agreed to review lighting options and potential upgrades before the next budget cycle.

According to city officials, this work will be completed using existing staff and equipment, with no additional project cost.

The 14th and Cochran project is the first of several low-impact flood control improvements planned for Hutchinson. City staff are currently evaluating more than a dozen other City-owned sites for potential use in similar efforts.

Each project, officials say, will help reduce the risk and impact of flooding over time and may eventually shrink the footprint of FEMA-designated flood areas across the city.

“This is an important first step toward making Hutchinson more resilient during heavy rain events,” the city said in its announcement.

Hutchinson Clinic CEO Kolbe Sheridan to step down in November

RENO COUNTY— Authorities have identified the two who died as a result of the head-on collision on Monday in Reno County. According to the Reno County Sheriff, 31-year-old Nicholas Brilhart of Sterling and 66-year-old Sharon Davis of Weston, West Virginia died in the crash that occurred just after 10.m. in the 8200 block of N K14 Hwy. Two of the other three individuals involved are still being treated at Wichita area hospitals. The third was treated and released.&nbsp;

According to the Reno County Sheriff a northbound silver Subaru SUV crossed the center line in the 8200 block of North K-14/96 and veered into the southbound lane. A southbound Ford F-150 attempted to avoid the crash by pulling onto the right shoulder, but the Subaru also moved onto the same shoulder, and the two vehicles collided head-on.

The Subaru carried four occupants. Two of them,&nbsp;31-year-old Nicholas Brilhart of Sterling and 66-year-old Sharon Davis of Weston, West Virginia were pronounced dead at the scene. An infant and another passenger were taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later transferred to a Wichita hospital. The driver of the Ford pickup, the sole occupant, was transported by private vehicle to Lyons Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

First responders arriving on the scene found citizens already performing lifesaving efforts, which were continued by emergency crews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheriff IDs man and woman who died in Reno County head-on crash

As Fire Prevention Week gets underway, Reno County fire officials are reminding residents about the vital role volunteer firefighters play in protecting rural communities — and the need for more people to step up and serve.

Travis Vogt, Fire Administrator for Reno County, and Dave Yoder, Fire Chief for Reno County Fire District 8, joined the BW Morning Show this week to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing local fire districts.

“Every firefighter we have is a volunteer,” Vogt said. “Even our chiefs are volunteers. Volunteerism has dropped significantly over the last 20 years, so finding people willing to give their time has become harder.”

To help meet that challenge, the county has developed a junior firefighter program that begins at age 16. Students gain hands-on experience and training under supervision, giving them an opportunity to decide if firefighting is a path they want to pursue.

“It’s a great way for young people to learn a skill, serve their community, and maybe even make a career out of it,” Vogt said. “We’ve had several who started as juniors and went on to full-time fire service.”

Every volunteer is required to complete the Firefighter I course through Hutchinson Community College within their first two years. Vogt said the county covers all costs — and even compensates volunteers for their time spent in training.

Fire District Consolidation Aims to Improve Response Times

Vogt confirmed that the recently approved consolidation of rural fire districts will officially take effect January 1, 2026, creating the new Reno County Fire District No. 1. The change, approved in July, is expected to streamline operations and enhance emergency response.

“By merging, we can immediately send more equipment and personnel to a scene without waiting for mutual aid,” Vogt explained. “It allows us to better coordinate coverage across the county and ultimately reduce response times.”

The county will continue to maintain strong mutual aid agreements with neighboring departments in Harvey, Rice, Pratt, Stafford, and Sedgwick counties, as well as the City of Hutchinson Fire Department. Many of those surrounding agencies also rely heavily on volunteers.

Both Vogt and Yoder urged residents to take preventive steps as wildfire season approaches. That includes clearing brush, cutting back overgrown vegetation, and keeping combustible materials — such as stacked firewood — away from homes and buildings.

“Give us room to work if we need to protect your property,” Yoder said. “A simple thing like moving your firewood pile a few feet away from your house can make a big difference.”

Those interested in volunteering can contact the Reno County Emergency Management Office or reach out directly to their local fire district.

“Anyone who wants to give back to their community can make a difference,” Vogt said. “We’ll help them through every step — from training to joining a department. It’s one of the most rewarding ways to serve your neighbors.”

For three decades, the Hutchinson community has rallied around one man whose life depends on the generosity of local blood donors. This Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Holy Cross Catholic Church will once again host the annual Red Cross blood drive in honor of 30-year-old McCartney “Mac” Johnson, whose survival depends on monthly infusions made from donated blood products.&nbsp;

"Mac" was born with a rare immune disorder called hypogammaglobulinemia, which leaves him with fewer antibodies to fight infections. Because blood cannot be manufactured or stored long-term, Mac’s mother began organizing this annual drive when he was a toddler and has continued every year since.&nbsp;

“Mac quite frankly would not be here without the products donated by the community,” said Katie Eaton with the American Red Cross. “His mom has made it a priority to make sure people know how important these donations are — they keep her son, and so many others, alive.”&nbsp;

Eaton said Mac receives treatments at least once a month, and his story underscores the constant need for blood products across Kansas and the nation.&nbsp;

“Blood donations help people with chronic illnesses like Mac’s, but also trauma victims, cancer patients, and mothers and babies during childbirth,” she said. “These products can’t be manufactured — they have to come from donors. And because most blood has a shelf life of only about 56 days, regular donations are critical.”&nbsp;

The Red Cross reports a dip in the national blood supply, especially for Type O donors, which are in constant demand for trauma care and emergency transfusions.&nbsp;

“All blood types are needed right now,” Eaton said. “It’s easy to get busy this time of year, but every donation makes a real difference.”&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Corn production costs and commodity prices

The City of Hutchinson and the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hutchinson are inviting the public to celebrate the grand opening of the new Shadduck Park Ninja Course with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 7, at 4:30 p.m. at Shadduck Park, 600 W. 2nd Avenue.

The event marks the completion of one of the city’s most exciting new recreational additions, offering residents of all ages a chance to experience a fitness course inspired by the popular “American Ninja Warrior” television series.

The celebration will feature a special appearance and live demonstration by professional American Ninja Warrior athlete Adam Rayl, followed by an opportunity for community members to try out the new equipment themselves.

Recently, Rayl has taken his talents to the global stage, competing in 100-meter Obstacle Course Races in Croatia, Dubai, and Manila. His personal motto, “Be Rock Solid,” reflects his commitment to perseverance, physical fitness, and inspiring others to achieve their best.

The Shadduck Park Ninja Course represents a collaborative effort between the City of Hutchinson, the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hutchinson, and numerous community partners. City officials say the new attraction is designed to promote active lifestyles, outdoor recreation, and youth engagement.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will meet Tuesday evening, October 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers with a full agenda including several public hearings, infrastructure projects, and park improvements.

Mayor Stacy Goss will read four proclamations at the start of the meeting, recognizing: •&nbsp; Fire Prevention Week •&nbsp; Disability Employment Awareness Month •&nbsp; Hispanic Heritage Month •&nbsp; Cyber Security Month

Key Items on the Consent Agenda Council will consider approval of more than $5.27 million in expenditures, along with routine reports and two zoning changes;&nbsp;the first at 304 W. 5th Avenue from C-4 Special Commercial to C-1 Office Commercial, and at 714 Cloverdale Drive from R-4 Residential to R-1 Single Household Suburban.

Also included is approval of the StartUp Hutch 2026 budget request, supporting continued entrepreneurial development across Reno County.

The council will also hold public hearings on three items.&nbsp;

The first for the Landmark Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) – The council will hold a public hearing and consider final approval of the RHID Development Plan and related development agreement. The RHID would support downtown residential redevelopment through property tax rebates.

Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements – Public meetings and hearings will be held on planned upgrades to the city’s wastewater system, as the council considers applying for a loan from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) through the Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund Act.

Sanitary Sewer Collection System Rehabilitation – A similar hearing will be held for a second project focusing on rehabilitation of the city’s sanitary sewer collection infrastructure, also tied to a KDHE loan application.

Under new business, the council will receive an update on unsafe and dangerous structures across the city, discuss economic development projects and pickleball court plans, and consider the replacement of playground equipment at Fairgrounds Park.

The proposed contract with GameTime totals $161,818.19, covering new equipment and installation. If approved, Mayor Goss will be authorized to sign the agreement.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at Hutchinson City Hall, 125 E. Avenue B.

Each year, Medicare Part D plans can change — including premiums, prescription coverage, and pharmacy networks. The department encourages Medicare beneficiaries to review their current plans to ensure they continue to meet their health and financial needs for 2026.

Residents can schedule a free appointment with a trained Senior Health Insurance Counselor by calling (620) 694-2911. Counselors provide unbiased guidance to help individuals compare prescription drug plans and potentially save on premiums and medication costs.

Reno County Department of Aging announces Medicare Part D enrollment assistance

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;Two people are dead and three others, including an infant, were injured following a head-on collision late Monday morning on K-14/96 Highway north of 82nd Avenue in northern Reno County.

According to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 10:14 a.m. Monday when a northbound silver Subaru SUV crossed the center line in the 8200 block of North K-14/96 and veered into the southbound lane. A red Ford F-150 traveling south attempted to avoid the crash by pulling onto the right shoulder, but the Subaru also moved onto the same shoulder, and the two vehicles collided head-on.

The Subaru carried four occupants. Two of them were pronounced dead at the scene, while an infant and another passenger were taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later transferred to a Wichita hospital. The driver of the Ford pickup, the sole occupant, was transported by private vehicle to Lyons Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.

First responders arriving on the scene found citizens already performing lifesaving efforts, which were continued by emergency crews. Multiple agencies assisted at the crash site, including Reno County Fire District 3, Reno County EMS, the Hutchinson Fire Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Rice County EMS, Reno County Fire/Emergency Management, and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation to the assisting agencies and to the several citizens who stopped to help and aid in traffic control before more personnel could arrive.

Two dead, three others injured in head on collision on K-14

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department is reminding residents to be cautious when charging and disposing of lithium-ion batteries as part of National Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 5–11.

This year’s national theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety”, focuses on preventing fires linked to lithium-ion batteries found in everyday devices such as phones, laptops, power tools and even lawn equipment.

“Each year, of course, we have a theme, and this year it’s ‘Charging to Fire Safety,'" Fire Marshal Michael Cain said. "We Saw this one coming for quite some time. This is all about safety with the lithium-ion batteries that have become quite an issue here over the past few years.”

Cain said the department is focusing on three key steps: buy, charge and recycle.
“The theme, there’s three steps with these batteries that we’re going to hit on this week, buy, charge and recycle,” Cain said. “Buy listed products for those batteries. Buy listed charging cables and accessories. It’s very easy to get them cheap online, but they’re not made for the product that you have, so they’re not going to work well. Once you start charging, it doesn’t work well, you’re going to start overheating that battery. You’re going to send it into thermal runaway. That’s where the problem comes in with starting just, overheat and explode.”

Cain said residents should only charge devices when they are physically nearby and avoid leaving items plugged in overnight.
“You should charge it when you are there, physically there with it,” Cain said. “Once it reaches 100 percent, take it off. And unplug that charging cord. Don’t leave that plugged in. It’s just like an extension cord at home, and that’s become the problem, much like we’ve always talked about the cheap extension cords in the home causing most of the fires that we have.”

The National Fire Prevention Week campaign began in 1922 and is the longest-running public health observance in the United States. Cain said this year’s topic is particularly relevant as lithium-ion batteries are now found in nearly everything, from power tools and e-bikes to children’s toys.

“They are in everything from phones to computers to lawn mowers, drills, weed eaters, and of course, cars,” Cain said. “They can’t go in the trash. They can’t go out to the landfill in the regular trash. They’ve got to be recycled.”

Residents can safely dispose of used batteries at the Reno County Landfill’s Household Hazardous Waste facility, or at local retailers such as Harbor Freight, Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Cain also reminded residents to check their fire extinguishers at least once a year, noting that even unused units can become compacted and ineffective over time.
“Just like that box of baking soda in the cupboard — you pull it out one day and it’s a brick because it’s compacted down,” he said. “Same thing happens in those extinguishers over time. Once a year, they need to be taken down, fluffed up and recharged so that they work.”

The Hutchinson Fire Department will continue public outreach throughout the week, emphasizing battery safety, proper disposal practices and home fire prevention.

“It’s hard to change habits, but just being aware, charging safely, unplugging, and recycling batteries properly, can make a huge difference,” Cain said.

Fire Marshal urges caution with lithium-ion batteries during Fire Prevention Week

Additional victims were transported to an area hospital for treatment.K-96 remains closed at 56th Avenue as crews work the scene, and traffic is being diverted.
