Three day weather outlook 

The Hutchinson YMCA introduced its new Aquatics Director, Cord Harrington, marking another step forward for the organization as its new facility continues to take shape.&nbsp;

Harrington, who joined the Y a little over a month ago, brings years of aquatics experience, including serving as head swim coach at Sterling College. A lifelong swimmer, Harrington said the role feels like a natural fit. 

“I grew up around the YMCA and it’s exciting to come back and give back to the community,” Harrington said. “With the new facility and new equipment on the way, we’ll have even more opportunities to create memories and expand aquatics programs.”&nbsp;

Harrington will oversee a variety of offerings, including year-round swim lessons for preschool and school-aged children, the Swim Academy designed to prepare youth for competitive swimming, and the YMCA Swim Club, which provides ongoing training and competition opportunities.&nbsp;

Hutchinson YMCA Branch Manager David Foster highlighted the return of the YMCA’s free Splash program, a water safety initiative for second graders across Hutchinson and Reno County. The program will resume September 8, with an estimated 300 to 400 students expected to participate throughout the school year.&nbsp; 

“We’re excited to once again provide this life-saving education,” Foster said. “By the end of the school year, every eligible student in the county will have gone through the program.”&nbsp;

As construction continues on the YMCA’s new building, leaders say the expanded aquatics programs, combined with the expertise of Harrington, will ensure the Y remains a hub for community recreation, safety, and lifelong learning.&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1100 block of East 30th on the south side.

I thought I would do an article on the history of mini golf in Hutchinson. The first miniature golf courses in Hutchinson sprang up in the 1930s, mostly unorganized and on vacant corner lots.

The first real course was opened by E.L. Semke of Enid, Oklahoma, on the southeast corner of 25th Avenue and North Main on June 20, 1946.

Roller City, at 1035 E. 30th Ave., opened its mini course on July 15, 1960, and was there until 1974 under the Skatemore name.

In 1964, Wheeler Broughton managed a course at Clowntown Kiddieland.

Countryside Miniature Golf, run by Leon Scott, was at 1420 E. 30th Ave. from 1966 to about 1980.

Robert Gilett opened the Shady Lane miniature golf at Fun Valley May 30, 1985, until 1988.

Putt-Putt Miniature Golf was owned by Phil and Cindy Schmitt from 1986 to 1997. The first photo shows the Putt-Putt clubhouse at opening in 1986 at 1101 E. 30th Ave.

The second photo shows the course looking east.

The third photo shows the course looking north.

The fourth photo shows the course signage lit up at night.

After a long drought of these venues in Hutchinson, Hutch Putt was opened in 2017 at 1500 N. Lorraine, owned by Cliff Shank. The fifth photo shows the course on opening day.

The sixth photo shows the Hutch Putt course today, still going strong at 1500 N. Lorraine.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Mini Golf - Vol. 136

Reno County Area Transit (Rcat) has been recognized with the 2025 Transit Service of the Year Award at the Annual Kansas Public Transportation Association (KPTA) Meeting and Expo.

The award highlights Rcat’s commitment to providing safe, timely, and reliable transportation across Reno County. Operating six days a week, Rcat connects residents in 16 communities and unincorporated areas to jobs, medical appointments, and other essential destinations.

Over the past year, Rcat recorded a 10 percent increase in ridership, a milestone officials credit to the dedication of drivers, dispatchers, and support staff. The KPTA award also celebrates the agency’s adaptive teamwork, empowered decision-making, and strong culture of service.

KPTA Chair Anne Smith, of ATA Bus, presented the award to Natalie Goertzen, Assistant Director of the Reno County Department of Aging and Public Transportation.

“This recognition is really about our people,” Goertzen said. “Our drivers, dispatchers, and staff make it possible for us to meet the needs of our communities every day. This award belongs to them.”

Rcat honored as Kansas Transit Service of the Year 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce has named Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning as its August Small Business of the Month.

Owner Ron Sturgeon launched the company after Stevens, Inc., where he had worked for 16 years, closed shortly after the birth of his youngest daughter. With a young family to support, Sturgeon drew on his HVAC background and quickly expanded into plumbing, building the business through mentorship and customer referrals.

What began as a one-man operation has grown into a company employing nine people, with as many as 20 at one time. Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning has been part of many major Hutchinson projects, including the Cosmosphere, Hutchinson Community College, City Hall, the Sports Arena, Tyson, local schools and churches.

The company prides itself on experience, with more than 100 years of combined expertise among its staff. Sturgeon said that knowledge often allows the team to save customers money by repairing older systems rather than recommending full replacement. Employee retention is another point of pride, with each staff member having at least five years of service, and one with more than 25 years.

As Hutchinson’s only union plumbing and HVAC provider, the business offers benefits, retirement plans and a workplace culture Sturgeon describes as both professional and fun. Beyond its operations, the company supports local schools, SkillsUSA, Hutchinson Community College and disaster relief, while employees volunteer in areas such as fire safety education and student mentorship.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement officers across Kansas will trade their patrol cars for coffee counters Friday morning as part of the statewide “Cops at Donut Shops” fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics Kansas.

From 7 to 10 a.m. Aug. 22, officers with the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be at stand-alone Dunkin’ locations in 10 Kansas cities, including Hutchinson at 1533 E. 17th Ave., collecting free-will donations for Special Olympics athletes. Contributions will help fund training, competitions and community programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“We are thrilled to partner with Dunkin’ and the community to support our athletes through this engaging event,” said Jake LaMunyon, director of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Kansas. “Every dollar raised helps create opportunities for our athletes to thrive through sports, health, and leadership.”

Participating cities include Andover, Derby, Hutchinson, Lenexa, Manhattan, Olathe, Overland Park, Shawnee, Topeka and Wichita. Dunkin’ shops in Wichita, Andover, Hutchinson and Derby will also offer $2.49 lattes with a donation during the event.

Local deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand at the Hutchinson Dunkin’ location to greet customers and accept contributions.

Hutch Taco John's closes 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Smallville Festival, which celebrates Hutchinson’s identity as the Superman-inspired “Smallville, Kansas,” is returning to the leadership of its original founder.

Since 2015, Hutchinson Recreation Commission has organized the annual festival after assuming responsibility at the request of its founding members. The event, which began in 2012, has grown into a community celebration featuring public events tied to Hutchinson’s comic book connection.

“Hutch Rec has enjoyed the past 10 years of providing public events under the Smallville Festival,” Hutch Rec Executive Director Anthony Finlay said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Hutchinson in such a unique way and to bring people together through this event.”

Festival founder Christopher Wietrick will once again guide the event. He expressed excitement about continuing the tradition he helped establish.

Smallville Festival returns to founder’s direction

August 20, 2025 - The Kansas Soybean Association is calling all soybean farmers in Kansas to enter their competitive soybean crop into the Kansas Soybean Yield Contest. Also open for entries is the statewide Kansas Soybean Value Contest, which analyzes protein, oil and other soybean qualities. Strong participation across the state provides a snapshot of growing conditions in each region and allows friendly competition among peers.

“This contest allows farmers to showcase the practices that maximize yield on their farm” said Dr. Sarah Lancaster, K-State Weed Extension Specialist and an Association board member. “To see how farmers manage challenges to have successful crops in conditions they can’t control is always impactful to see.”

Agricultural sciences company FMC is stepping up this year, joining the Kansas Soybean Commission as a sponsor of the contests. 

“This contest is a great opportunity for us to support KSA and we see the value it brings farmers,” said Brian Laverentz from FMC. “Raising top yielding soybeans is often a systems approach. Many of these farmers rely on FMC products to be effective in raising their crops and we want to show our appreciation for that. We love the comradery these contests bring and getting to recognize and honor farmers across the state.” 

Yield contest districts are determined by region, tillage method and irrigation status, with a total of 18 districts in consideration. Farmers may enter multiple categories, but only one entry per field.

Eligible fields must consist of at least five contiguous acres as verified by the Farm Service Agency, GPS printout or manual measurement. A non-relative witness, either Kansas State Research and Extension personnel or a specified designee, must be present at harvest and should ensure that the combine grain hopper is empty prior to harvest. Official elevator-scale tickets with moisture percentage and foreign matter included must accompany entries to be considered.

The Kansas Soybean Commission sponsors a monetary prize for the top three finishers in each district, as well as an additional $1,000 for the overall dryland and irrigated winners and any who top the new 126.6 bushel-per-acre record, set last year by McClain Family Farms, LLC. Each district winner receives $300, second receives $200, and third receives $100.

Individuals looking to submit a value contest entry should send a 20-ounce sample, which is evaluated by Ag Processing, Inc., to determine the value. Monetary awards are also given to the three highest-value entries.

Farmers may enter both the yield and value contests. The top yield entry and top value entry, as well as one randomly drawn entry who enters both contests, will earn a trip to the 2026 Commodity Classic set for February 25-27 in San Antonio. All participants receive a T-shirt.

The program is open to students in grades 9–12 and will take place over three consecutive Saturdays – Nov. 1, 8, and 15, 2025 – from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meals, transportation assistance, and technology will be provided at no cost.&nbsp;

The AI Bootcamp gives underserved students hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools, including generative AI, and explores real-world applications in fields such as healthcare, arts, business, computer science, sports science, and career readiness. Students will also complete a capstone project under the guidance of industry mentors.&nbsp;

“At the Cosmosphere, we're passionate about igniting curiosity in young minds and empowering the next generation of innovators. This AI bootcamp, in partnership with the Mark Cuban Foundation, represents a tremendous opportunity to do just that,” said JoAnna Strecker, Cosmosphere Vice President of Education. “We're grateful to the Mark Cuban Foundation for their support in making this dream a reality, and we can’t wait to see the incredible things these students will achieve.”&nbsp;

Cosmosphere, Mark Cuban Foundation to host free AI bootcamp this fall

UPDATE:&nbsp; Reno County Public works said that as of Aug. 20, Salt Marsh Road has reopened as the bridge repair has been completed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno County Public Works announced the closure of Salt Marsh Road between 4th Avenue and Clark Road beginning April 22, 2025, until further notice for bridge replacement.&nbsp;

This is in rural western Reno County, approximately 25 miles west of Hutchinson.

Today is the last day to register for a babysitting class being sponsored by Hutch Rec and Kansas CPR.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The two organizations are offering a hands-on babysitting class aimed at responsible young people ready to take on the important job of caring for children. In just two hours, participants will learn CPR for infants, children, and adults, along with how to use an AED and handle basic first aid situations.

Snacks, prizes, and a certificate of completion are included for those who finish the course. Organizers say it’s a great way to make sure future babysitters feel prepared, safe, and ready to succeed.

The Hutchinson City Council moved forward on several key initiatives during its meeting Tuesday evening, ranging from infrastructure improvements to community event approvals.

The council issued a proclamation declaring August 22 as Antique Tractor Preservation Day, recognizing the importance of preserving agricultural history.

On the consent agenda, members approved more than $2.3 million in expenditures, accepted the July city financial report, appointed Joseph Kelber to the Airport Advisory Committee, and approved resolutions allowing special events for Brewfest and the Southwest Bricktown Fiesta.

One of the major business items was approval of $1.7 million in general obligation bonds to fund repairs to the Woodie Seat Avenue C Bridge. The project will include structural upgrades, a new concrete overlay, improved lighting, and enhanced pedestrian pathways.

The council also set a public hearing for October 7 to consider the creation of a Landmark Reinvestment Housing Incentive District.

In other action, council members received an update on the ongoing Woodie Seat Phase II project and sent a zoning request for property at 23rd and Lorraine back to the Planning Commission. The council asked that restrictions be added on the types of businesses that could operate at the location.

Council members also directed staff to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for management services at Memorial Hall, with the intent of establishing a 10-year contract for facility management.

The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for September 2 at City Hall.

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch Post&nbsp;The Hutchinson City Council moved forward on several key initiatives during its meeting Tuesday evening, ranging from infrastructure improvements to community event approvals.The council issued a proclamation declaring August 22 as Antique Tractor Preservation Day, recognizing the importance of preserving agricultural history.On the consent agenda, members approved more than $2.3 million in expenditures, accepted the July city financial report, appointed Joseph Kelber to the Airport Advisory Committee, and approved resolutions allowing special events for Brewfest and the Southwest Bricktown Fiesta.One of the major business items was approval of $1.7 million in general obligation bonds to fund repairs to the Woodie Seat Avenue C Bridge. The project will include structural upgrades, a new concrete overlay, improved lighting, and enhanced pedestrian pathways.The council also set a public hearing for October 7 to consider the creation of a Landmark Reinvestment Housing Incentive District.In other action, council members received an update on the ongoing Woodie Seat Phase II project and sent a zoning request for property at 23rd and Lorraine back to the Planning Commission. The council asked that restrictions be added on the types of businesses that could operate at the location.Council members also directed staff to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for management services at Memorial Hall, with the intent of establishing a 10-year contract for facility management.The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for September 2 at City Hall.

NEWTON – The Harvey County Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals is inviting the public to provide feedback on zoning regulations for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in rural areas of the county.

ADUs are secondary living spaces built on the same property as a primary residence. They are typically small, one- or two-bedroom units and may serve as housing for aging parents, adult children, farm workers, or guests. Examples include attached apartments, small modular homes, pool houses, or living quarters in sheds or outbuildings.

The Planning Commission is responsible for zoning regulations in unincorporated areas of Harvey County. Incorporated cities maintain authority within their own boundaries.

Residents can participate in the process by completing a survey, which is available online through Sept. 19. Paper copies of the survey can also be picked up at the Planning, Zoning and Environmental Department in the Harvey County Courthouse.

The survey is open to all, with demographic information collected solely for data purposes. Once responses are compiled, the findings will be presented to the Planning Commission and later reviewed by the Harvey County Commission for consideration.

Runners, joggers, walkers, and even “walker-talkers” are invited to take part in the third annual B-Well Frolic 5K, set for Saturday, Sept. 27, during the Buhler Frolic festival.

The community-focused event encourages participants of all ages and abilities to get moving, whether for fitness, fun, or fellowship. Registration is open now, with a deadline of Aug. 23 to sign up. Event organizers are also seeking business sponsors to help support the 5K. Sponsorship benefits include logo placement on event shirts and inclusion in promotional materials leading up to and during the event. Midway Motors has already signed on as the lead sponsor.

The United Way of Reno County (UWRC) has announced that tickets and tables are now available for Spark Tank Live!, a new community event designed to empower local nonprofits with funding and visibility.

The high-energy competition is set for Thursday, Sept. 25, at the 1861 Club on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with finalist pitches beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a dessert reception at 8:30 p.m.

Four nonprofit organizations will take the stage to present bold, community-driven solutions in UWRC’s focus areas of youth opportunity, healthy community, financial stability, and community resiliency. More than $25,000 in funding is up for grabs, with finalists competing for awards decided by a panel of judges and audience votes.

This year’s judges include Daniel Friesen, co-founder and CIO of IdeaTek; Dr. Kay Hart of the Hutchinson Clinic; Mike King, CEO of Lumineo Sign; and Sheila Regehr, corporate affairs manager for Dillons/Kroger. Alongside the judges’ awards, audience members will vote to select a People’s Choice Award winner, which carries an additional $1,500 prize.

Hutchinson Public Schools&nbsp;has launched the new school year on a high note, with district leaders reporting a smooth start for both staff and students.&nbsp;

However, a major topic this semester will be the upcoming bond election, set for Nov. 4. District leaders say the proposal addresses critical needs ranging from early childhood education to middle school transitions.&nbsp;

USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson explained that the district currently operates pre-kindergarten programs at eight different sites, a system many families find confusing. The bond would consolidate early childhood education at a central location, ensuring smoother entry into kindergarten.&nbsp;

The proposal also includes building a new middle school to house grades six through eight, reducing the number of school transitions students face. “Relationships are key during these developmental years,” Johnson said. “Fewer transitions mean stronger continuity for students and parents.”&nbsp;

The district plans to build on land already owned at 23rd and Severance, moving the current soccer field to the high school campus and partnering with the city on new baseball and practice fields.&nbsp;

The bond proposal totals $109 million, less than the inflation-adjusted cost of the district’s last major bond in 2006. Officials estimate the tax increase would be about five mills, or under $5 per month on a $100,000 home.&nbsp;

“This is about preparing for the future of our students and our community,” Johnson said. “The last bond created opportunities that still benefit students today, not just in Hutchinson but across the region. We see this as the next step in building excellence.”&nbsp;

If approved, the bond would also repurpose existing facilities. Hutchinson Middle School 8 would become a hub for student support services, with early childhood programs located on the first floor. Other properties, including Hutchinson Middle School 7 and district offices, may be sold or redeveloped. Johnson said several local organizations have already expressed interest.&nbsp;

“I know the city council is working very hard to take care of blight in our town, and USD 308, Board of Education does not want to add to that. So, there would be a plan for all of those buildings,” Johnson said. “These facilities are valuable and can serve new purposes in the community.”&nbsp;

Dr. Johnson emphasized that the bond is not just about infrastructure, but about preparing students for long-term success. From kindergarten readiness to career and technical education, they say the goal is to create a seamless learning experience.&nbsp;

“Our schools are strong at the elementary and high school levels,” Dr. Johnson said. “This bond allows us to strengthen the middle years and early childhood, ensuring every student is ready for the future.”&nbsp;
