HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was taken into custody Tuesday following a domestic disturbance that escalated into a multi-agency standoff involving local law enforcement and a SWAT team.

At about 4:15 p.m. on April 15, officers with the Hutchinson Police Department, along with personnel from several Reno County law enforcement agencies, responded to reports of a domestic disturbance involving an armed suspect near 17th Avenue and Plum Street.

Upon arrival, officers located a female victim at the Kwik Shop convenience store. She was evaluated at the scene by Reno County EMS and later transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was not immediately released.

Other officers responded to a nearby residence where the suspect was believed to be located. A perimeter was established, and officers attempted to make contact with the suspect but received no response. The Reno County SWAT team was then called in and made repeated efforts to communicate with the individual.

After multiple failed attempts to contact the suspect, SWAT officers entered the home and arrested Damon M. Cantu, 23, of Hutchinson. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Cantu faces numerous charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery by strangulation, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threat, felony interference with law enforcement, endangerment, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

Authorities expressed appreciation to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Reno County EMS for their assistance.

Armed suspect taken into custody after standoff in Hutchinson

We had local exterminator Jeff Wells with Advance Pest Control stop by the BW Morning Show to talk about pest control, and what homeowners can do to help control pests. &nbsp;

We asked Jeff what his expectations are for this spring and summer. &nbsp;“It's, you know, in fact, my wife and I were talking about this earlier in the year, and I said, this may be one of those years where our our swarm calls are really up,” said Wells.&nbsp;

We asked about swarm season and how it's going so far this spring. &nbsp;“So we have received a bunch of, you know, termite swarm calls, they're coming. And you know when they show up, boy, you know, because they don't show up in single spies, but they are in battalions when they arrive. And so, lot of phone calls with those going on right now. And there's a distinct difference between swarming termites and ants. and ants will also swarm this time of year,” said Wells. &nbsp;

Wells said that one important thing to remember when you call a pest control service is to save the bug. Any pest control company you call out to your home needs to know the target pest. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He elaborated on why that is so important, “We had an instance the other day where a customer thought they had bat bugs. Turns out they didn't have bat bugs. They had bed bugs, and the treatment for those two critters varies. In fact, the treatment differential between bids was about $6,000 and so just the little hairs on the pronotum of this bug made the difference in what that treatment was going to look like. And so again, it's just super important for us to know what we're going after,” Wells said. &nbsp;

Thats because they can choose the products, the right products to make sure they are applying them appropriately. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On a final note, we asked what the homeowner can do preemptively to help with pest control.&nbsp; 

“I think folks can do a lot of stuff around the outside of their house to help reduce population of nuisance insects, the occasional invaders that we'll call them, and a lot of that has to do with manicuring stuff, removing, you know, debris, from around the outside of the house. Same thing with termites. If we can avoid stacking, you know, wood right against the house, create some breaks and some spacing. That really does, does you a lot of good even, kind of keeping the dirt away from the brick ledge of the house and kind of keeping it down off the siding. You just have a little Mother Nature pest control helping you along the way, and she's a lot cheaper than the rest of us.”&nbsp;

Spring is here.... and so are the bugs  

The Hutchinson Fire Department rescued two people from an afternoon house fire on Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In a media release, the fire department said that they responded to a house fire in the 600 block of North Plum Street shortly before 12:30 p.m. &nbsp;While they were enroute to the fire dispatch notified responding units that there were two people trapped on the second floor of the residence. &nbsp;

Initial units on the scene found heavy smoke coming out of the residence and two female victims self-evacuating out of windows on the second story.&nbsp; One of the victims was rescued via a ground ladder and the second via a fire apparatus.&nbsp; The victims were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Due to the conditions, a request was made to bring all available fire units to the scene. Two cats were later found while searching the residence and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. They were taken by animal control for observation. &nbsp;

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Hutchinson Fire Department Fire Marshals Office &nbsp;

HFD rescues 2 from house fire on Monday afternoon

Adopt a Furry Friend: Boortz  

The McPherson County Board of County Commissioners on Monday enacted a burn ban for all of McPherson County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ban is effective beginning on April 14 and is in effect until the Board of County Commissioners rescinds it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ban includes all outdoor fires including: • Fence rows, ditches, fields and debris • Brush piles • Burn pits, campfires, back yard fire pits and chimeneas • Residential trash in burn barrels&nbsp;

According to the ban you can use:&nbsp; • Barbeque grills and smokers • Permanent backyard stove and fireplaces • Fixed barbeque grill in a park or recreation area&nbsp;

USD 308 announces retirees for 2024-2025 school year 

RENO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Lexus E7 driven by Gregory Lynn&nbsp; Baker, 69, Wichita, was southbound on Kansas 14 one mile north of Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The car crossed the center&nbsp;line and struck a 2024 Kenworth semi driven by Troy Edward Myers, 52, Andover, head-on.

EMS transported Baker to&nbsp;Ascension Via Christi St Francis. Myers was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The crash temporarily closed K-14 between Wilson Road and 4th Avenue.

The Reno County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol are on the scene of an injury accident on K-14.&nbsp;

They say that the highway is closed between Wilson Road and Fourth Avenue and will be for an undetermined period of time.&nbsp;

We are working to gather information on the accident and will pass it along when it is available.

Kansas man hospitalized after head-on crash with a semi

KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND ENVIROMENT&nbsp;

TOPEKA –The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Abbyville public water supply system located in Reno County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. 

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the City of Abbyville indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for City of Abbyville 

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A woman accused of driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a Hutchinson woman attended an arraignment hearing on Monday morning.

Katelyn Barrioz, 24 of Wichita, pled guilty to 2nd degree murder, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and theft in Judge Seth Rundle’s courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In November she was charged with First-Degree Felony Murder, Second-Degree Murder – Reckless, Felony Flee and Elude, Aggravated Burglary, Auto Theft and Criminal Damage to Property, according to Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford.

On October 27, police located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;The vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road in Wichita. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires.

Despite this, the suspect later identified as Barrioz, fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.

The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail later that week, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

She is now scheduled for sentencing on April 28.

Betty Taylor of the Horticulture Club said, "The plant sale consists of plants that club members have divided perennials in their yard, grown extra, annuals, whatever they want to donate to the plant sale. I never know what's going to show up until it comes."&nbsp;

Horticulture Club to host annual plant sale this Saturday 

PRATT, Kan. — A Kansas pilot turned the sky into a canvas for a high-flying proposal, using his flight path to spell out “Will you marry me, Taylor?”

The proposal took place Wednesday, April 9, above the skies near Pratt. Terry Williamson, a local pilot flying a Beech P35 Bonanza, mapped out the message in advance and then flew the route, which took just over two hours to complete.

“I have ForeFlight, which is an app with a scratch pad where you can draw over the map,” Williamson said. “I used that to sketch the message out on the ground first, practiced it several times, and then followed the route in the air. I thought it would take 45 minutes, but FlightAware says it took two hours and six minutes from takeoff to landing.”

The flight—and the effort—was worth it.

He said his fiancée was at work at the time, which helped keep the surprise intact.

“If I did it when she wasn’t working, she’d know where I was and it wouldn’t have been a surprise,” he said.

She discovered the proposal later that day after Williamson posted a link to the flight path on Facebook.

The Reno County Sheriff's office said that shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, they, along with Reno County EMS and Reno County Fire District Number 3, were dispatched to Nickerson Boulevard just northwest of 56 Avenue.&nbsp; &nbsp;Life-saving measures were performed on the victim, but he was declared dead at the scene.&nbsp;

The Sheriff's Office said that 54-year-old Bruce Steocklein of Nickerson was riding his motorcycle when, for unknown reasons, the motorcycle left the roadway and continued in the north ditch before coming to rest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the Easter holiday next weekend, there are concerns for pet owners.&nbsp;Dr. Erica Miller of Apple Lane Animal Hospital talked about Easter being problematic for our pets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first issue is chocolate.&nbsp; She commented that the main thing that people always think about is the chocolate.&nbsp; The chocolate bunnies and all the candy in the Easter baskets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, "That's probably our number one call would be, well, my dog ate some of the chocolate."&nbsp; Miller added. "So if you do have that situation, do call your veterinarian. 

"They'll be able to kind of walk you through next steps, what those might look like sometimes, depending on what it is, you know, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, it could be anywhere from just a little bit of stomach upset, you know, maybe some vomiting or diarrhea, but could also be more severe for having the dark chocolate is as well." said Dr. Miller.&nbsp;

The next concern is candy.&nbsp; It used to be just a little gastrointestinal upset, but with the popularity of sugar-free candies, you have to be concerned about the pets getting into them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, "We have to be really careful about our pets getting the sugar-free candy with Xylitol. Xylitol can cause a really big drop in blood sugar in our pets, which can mean seizures and other issues."

Another concern pertains to cat owners. That concern is lilies. Easter lilies and other lilies are toxic to cats.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, " I know we've talked about it before, but lilies are highly, highly, highly toxic to cats, and we don't know what exactly in them is but anything from the pollen." " So, cats jump on the counter, up by the flowers. They're sniffing it. There's pollen that's dropped onto the counter. There they have it on their paws, and you know, we know dogs and cats groom themselves and licks, so then they ingest that pollen. But anything from the stem, the leaves, the flower and the pollen is all toxic to cats.&nbsp;

She said that she has had some cats come into the clinic that had access to lilies before, and it can cause renal failure. She said that if you are a cat family, make sure that lilies are not in your flower arrangements or home.

Easter brings concerns for pet owners

MANHATTAN — On Kansas State University's inaugural Day of Giving, Wildcats across the world shared their pride for academic programs, student success and innovative research. More than 1,600 donors invested $3.4 million in areas across the institution, supporting students, faculty research and college initiatives.

K-State Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge and celebration of everything that makes K-State special, invited the Wildcat nation to unite and share their love for the university, displaying that when Wildcats come together, we can do good for Kansas and the world.

"The tremendous outpouring of generosity we witnessed during our K-State Day of Giving reaffirms what I've always known about our university community — when called upon, our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students respond with extraordinary heart and commitment," said President Richard Linton. "Every gift represents a personal investment in our shared future and a profound belief in our mission."

Throughout the day, K-Staters supported areas they were most passionate about. Student groups, including the Concrete Canoe team, the K-State Rodeo team and the Wildcat Rocketry team, received donations empowering student engagement and learning beyond the classroom. The Global Impact in Sorghum initiative, which conducts research to improve sorghum production techniques and introduce improved seed, saw support for its mission and used social media to share its impact with audiences. The College of Business Administration rallied funds for applied learning experiences that prepare students for careers. Other significant gifts went to All Faiths Chapel and Cats' Cupboard, a vital resource for enhancing food security at K-State.

Departments across campus competed for bonus funds through various leaderboards and challenges. The College of Business Administration led the way in total dollars raised, bringing in more than $1 million, while the Cats' Cupboard engaged the most donors to secure the top spot in the participation leaderboard with 203 donors.

Online "Purple Power Hour" social media challenges fueled engagement and competition. K-Staters participated in challenges ranging from sharing their most beloved K-State tradition to sharing a K-State pet photo to unlock bonus dollars for their favorite departments. The K-State Marching Band and Cats' Cupboard each claimed two challenge victories.

While many K-State alumni and friends engaged and supported virtually via social media, at K-State's Manhattan campus, students, faculty, staff and community members were also able to play a hands-on role in shaping the success of their favorite K-State programs. At Bosco Student Plaza, they gathered to celebrate, participate in challenges and interactive activities, take photos with Willie the Wildcat and directly impact the areas they love.

"In the face of a challenge, you often hear K-Staters say, 'Where there's a Wildcat, there's a way,'" said KSU Foundation President and CEO Greg Willems. "Yesterday, K-Staters did just that. We are so grateful to each and every donor who participated in our first K-State Day of Giving. You created a brighter future for K-State and its students."

K-State Day of Giving is a partnership between the university and the Kansas State University Foundation, K-State's strategic partner for philanthropy.
