MCPHERSON, Kan. — Bluestem Communities has purchased 50 acres of land in McPherson as part of a long-term plan to expand The Cedars senior living community.

The property is located just east of The Cedars' existing campus along North Maxwell Street. Bluestem officials said the land will provide opportunities for future independent living homes and continued growth of the community.

“This purchase reflects the commitment of partners who share our belief in the value of quality non-profit senior living,” said Ryan Goering, chief operating officer for Bluestem Communities. “We are grateful for those whose support makes it possible for us to continue to live our mission by serving older adults in McPherson and the surrounding area.”

The land was previously owned by the Gustafson family, longtime McPherson residents who helped make the property available for purchase by Bluestem Communities.

The Cedars currently serves more than 300 residents across several levels of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, long-term care and short-term rehabilitation.

The community traces its roots to the 1890s, when it was founded by the Church of the Brethren. It moved to its permanent McPherson location in 1953.

The Cedars became the fifth location in the Bluestem Communities network in July 2025. The organization also operates Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton, Schowalter Villa in Hesston and Bluestem PACE programs in McPherson and Hutchinson.

“Bluestem Communities is excited to invest in the continued growth of The Cedars and the broader McPherson community,” Goering said. “This property gives us the opportunity to thoughtfully plan for future expansion and welcome more residents who are seeking a vibrant senior living community.”
