Buhler schools warn of bus delays due to road flooding on 82nd Avenue

After heavy rains earlier this week left parking lots unusable and fairgoers wading through mud, the Kansas State Fair is pressing ahead with a full schedule of events, music, and history.

On Tuesday, more than two dozen school bands performed inside the People’s Bank and Trust Arena, including Rose Hill and Sedan.&nbsp;

"I talked to one band director who indicated they got up in the dark of the morning or the night, whichever, and drove three and a half hours to Hutchinson, and they had instructions to be back in time for football practice." said Longtime fair historian and foundation member Richard Shank.

Shank, who first attended the fair in 1957, recalled memories of the infamous 1965 flood that left parts of the grounds under several feet of water. “We’ve seen wet years before, but the leadership team has handled it well, bussing in folks from the Hutchinson Sports Arena lots,” he said.

This year marks the 112th Kansas State Fair, first held in 1913. With the exception of 2020, when COVID-19 forced a cancellation, the fair has continued even through wartime gas rationing. Fair leaders, including General Manager Bryan Schulz in his fifth year, have overseen significant improvements in recent years. Projects by the Kansas State Fair Foundation include the 1861 Club, restoration of the historic Lear House, Capper Cooperative Park, and ongoing work at the Bison Building.

Despite the weather challenges, crowds topped 100,000 over the opening weekend. Shuttle buses continue to run daily from the Hutchinson Sports Arena, Uptown Mall, and Bold 3PL, with handicapped parking available near Gate 5.

Entertainment has included wrestling, Christian rock group Josiah Queen, and the Oak Ridge Boys — the act that has performed at the Kansas State Fair more times than any other. Upcoming events include the Governor’s Awards and a Pronto Pup eating contest at noon on Sunday.

For Shank, the fair remains a place where history, community, and commerce all meet. “We’ve bought everything from tractors to lawnmowers here for the farm,” he said. “The fair has always been about more than food and fun — it’s where Kansas comes together.”

The Kansas State Fair has announced a schedule change for tonight’s Josiah Queen with Ben Fuller concert at the Nex-Tech Grandstand. The show, originally set for 7:30 p.m., will now begin at 6:30 p.m. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m.

State Fair changes time for Josiah Queen, Ben Fuller concert

Corn farmers across the Midwest could soon find a larger market for their crops, but the future of E-15 fuel in California now rests with Governor Gavin Newsom.

The California Legislature has approved a bill that would allow the sale of E-15 fuel — a gasoline blend containing 15 percent ethanol — across the state. Supporters say the move would benefit both farmers and consumers by boosting demand for corn-based ethanol while providing drivers with a lower-cost fuel alternative.

However, the measure faces a significant hurdle: Governor Newsom has expressed strong opposition to expanding E-15 availability. His administration has directed the California Air Resources Board to conduct a safety review before he will consider signing the bill.

The Reno County Commission will meet Wednesday, at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse to take action on the 2026 budgets, including both county and special district funds.

A public hearing will be held on the proposed Reno County 2026 budget. Commissioners will hear comments on the proposed tax levy and use of funds, review the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR), and consider Resolution 2025-26, which would allow the county to exceed the RNR if approved. Following discussion, commissioners are expected to adopt the 2026 county budget.

A second public hearing will focus on the 2026 budgets for Reno County’s special districts. Similar to the county budget process, commissioners will hear comments on tax levies, review the RNR for special districts, and consider Resolution 2025-27 to exceed the RNR. Adoption of the special districts’ 2026 budget is also on the agenda.

The commission’s consent agenda includes several infrastructure and policy items: •&nbsp;Approval of a construction contract for a new EMS station.&nbsp; •&nbsp;Approval of a $880,280 contract with Wycoff Construction of Saint John for a 4-inch waterline connection between the City of Hutchinson and Yoder Water District 101. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Adoption of a new policy for the Reno County Special Parks and Recreation Fund.

Three-day weather outlook

WICHITA, Kan. — The Greater Wichita YMCA has met the requirements for a $2 million challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, marking another milestone in the capital campaign for the new Hutchinson YMCA.

To secure the funding, the Y was required to raise an additional $7 million by October 2025. Officials said the goal was reached ahead of schedule, allowing the Mabee Foundation’s pledge to be fulfilled.

“The fact that we are able to say, ahead of schedule, that we have secured a $2 million challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation speaks to the support and commitment the community has for the Y, and we’re incredibly thankful,” said Mike Folks, Hutchinson YMCA board chair. “Our entire community came together to make this possible, and we can’t wait for the doors to open.”

Construction of the 75,000-square-foot facility began in January at 20th Street and Lorraine on land donated through a partnership with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. The new Y is scheduled to open in 2026 and will serve as what leaders describe as a new “front door” for health care delivery in Hutchinson.

“We are extremely grateful to the Mabee Foundation, our other invaluable partners and the community-at-large who embraced our vision and made it their own,” said Ronn McMahon, Greater Wichita YMCA president and CEO. “We’re building more than walls. It’s about creating an even healthier and more connected future for Reno County residents.”

The new Hutchinson Y will feature a destination aquatics center, indoor track, gymnasium, expanded gymnastics center, fitness studios, a community room, and additional family spaces. Programs will include youth development, family engagement and wellness opportunities. Income-based financial assistance will be available to ensure access for all residents.

$2M grant boosts new Hutchinson YMCA project

Gov. Kelly Orders Flags Lowered on Sept. 11 to Honor 9/11 Victims

TOPEKA — Governor Laura Kelly has directed that flags across the State of Kansas be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, Sept. 11, in remembrance of the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Flags will remain lowered from sunup to sundown.

The order honors the nearly 3,000 people killed and thousands more injured when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field 24 years ago.

“We will never forget the horrific tragedy that occurred 24 years ago, taking the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans and injuring thousands more,” Gov. Kelly said in a statement. “In the face of a terrorist attack, we reflect on the valor and bravery demonstrated that day by our nation’s first responders, who saved the lives of many despite losing more than 400 of their own. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their selfless service and sacrifice.”

The annual remembrance continues a long-standing tradition of honoring both the victims and the emergency personnel who responded to the attacks.

Kelly said in a statement. “In the face of a terrorist attack, we reflect on the valor and bravery demonstrated that day by our nation’s first responders, who saved the lives of many despite losing more than 400 of their own. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their selfless service and sacrifice.”The annual remembrance continues a long-standing tradition of honoring both the victims and the emergency personnel who responded to the attacks.

The Hutchinson Sports Arena and Stringer Fine Arts Center parking lots are currently full, though fairgoers can continue to check for openings as spaces become available.&nbsp;

Additional parking is now open at two off-site locations: the southwest corner of the Hutchinson Uptown Mall near Hutchinson Vintage Market, and the east lot of Bold 3PL at 1529 East 17th Avenue.&nbsp;

Shuttle service to the Fairgrounds will run from these lots until 10 p.m., with all drop-offs at Gate 9 on Plum Street. Officials caution visitors not to wait until the last shuttle to arrive, as the final bus will leave promptly at 10 p.m.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College charter and Dragon buses are covering the Uptown Mall route, while a separate HCC charter bus is serving the Bold 3PL lot. The Durham School Bus will continue to operate the Sports Arena route only. Longer wait times are expected with the extended routes.&nbsp;

Handicapped parking remains available near Gate 5 on State Fair Road and Gate 9 on Plum Street with proper placards displayed.&nbsp;

Fair officials thank the public for their patience and cooperation.&nbsp;

Shuttle Service: Starting at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9 buses will run approximately every 15 minutes, transporting patrons to and from the Fairgrounds with drop-off and pick-up at Gate 9 on Plum Street.

Handicapped Parking: Parking near Gate 5 on State Fair Road will remain available for handicapped guests only. Guest must display their handicapped placard in order to park in this area.

Will Call: The Will Call office at Lot C on Plum Street will remain open and accessible.

“The recent rainfall has made our on-grounds parking lots unsafe and unusable,” said Bryan Schulz, Kansas State Fair General Manager. “We are grateful to local partners including the City of Hutchinson and Hutchinson Community College for providing alternate parking solutions, and we appreciate our guests’ flexibility and patience in using the shuttle services.”

Kansas State Fair parking lots will remain closed for the next 48 hours, at which time conditions will be reassessed.

Governor Laura Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7:42 a.m. for flooding in counties in the north-central and south-central regions of the state. This declaration allows resources to be used to provide state assistance.

“Heavy rains and flooding impacted several counties yesterday and we will do what we can to support those counties,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Do not drive into standing water, just 12 inches of rushing can carry away most cars. &nbsp;Turn around, don’t drown.”&nbsp;

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management has partially activated the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka to monitor flood activity, assist counties with their potential needs and coordinate state resources

The USD 308 Board of Education moved forward with several key items during its regular meeting Monday evening at the district administration center.

The board passed a resolution for the 2025–2026 Local Option Budget, totaling $12,439,435.

In addition, board members approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Trinity United Methodist Church, setting terms for the district to provide bulk lunch services to Trinity’s Treasures Preschool and Childcare Center. Under the agreement, the district will supply about 20 meals per day when school is in session, at a cost of $5 per meal.

In other action, members approved the sale of two homes located at 2800 and 2804 Morris Road, both built by students through the Career and Technical Education Academy’s building trades program.

Additionally, the board approved $24,137 in wiring and software upgrades for 11 rooftop HVAC units at Hutchinson High School. The upgrade will bring the units onto the same system as the rest of the campus, eliminating the need to manage two separate systems.

The next meeting of the USD 308 Board of Education is scheduled for Sept. 22.

Three-day weather outlook 

Tonight’s scheduled Demolition Derby at the Kansas State Fair has been canceled due to weather conditions.

Fair officials announced the decision Monday evening, citing safety as the top priority for fans, participants, and staff. After monitoring conditions and consulting with local authorities, organizers determined cancellation was the most responsible course of action.

“All ticket holders will receive refunds,” the Fair said in a statement. “Guests who purchased by credit card will automatically receive refunds through Etix, while those who paid cash will be contacted directly by the Kansas State Fair Ticket Office.”

Fair General Manager Bryan Schultz acknowledged the disappointment of canceling one of the Fair’s most popular events but emphasized the need to put safety first.

“We know how much our guests look forward to the Demolition Derby each year,” Schultz said. “While we’re disappointed by tonight’s cancellation, safety must come first. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to welcoming fans back for the rest of this year’s Fair.”

Lowen Corp. finalist in Coolest Thing Made in Kansas competition

Two outstanding Kansas youth were recognized at the Kansas State Fair for their agricultural knowledge and leadership, as Emily Hare or Buhler High School and Ethan Petersilie of LaCrosse High School tied for first place in the 2025 Ag Challenge of Champions.

The statewide competition, hosted by the Kansas Fairs &amp; Festivals Association, brought together top 4-H and FFA members to test their expertise through livestock breed identification, crop and weed recognition, meat cuts, feed analysis, and a comprehensive written exam on agriculture.

Hare and Petersilie emerged from a competitive field, earning identical top scores. Organizers say their performance reflects not only academic excellence, but also a deep commitment to the future of Kansas agriculture.

As a result of their achievement, both winners will receive a $3,000 scholarship to support continued education and leadership development.

“The Challenge of Champions is designed to spotlight the best and brightest in Kansas youth agriculture,” said event coordinator Ty Lewick. “Emily and Ethan exemplify the passion, intelligence, and work ethic that will drive the industry forward.”

The Ag Challenge of Champions is held annually in partnership with the Kansas State Fair.

Hare, Perersilie tie for top honors in Kansas Ag Challenge of Champions

Despite a rainy start Friday, attendance at the Kansas State Fair surged over the weekend, drawing some of the largest crowds in recent years. Fair officials reported that 102,218 people attended opening weekend, with 43,888 visitors on Saturday alone — just shy of a single-day record.

Organizers noted that new ticket-scanning technology is helping them track attendance more accurately than in years past, when paper tickets were weighed to estimate crowd sizes.

Among the highlights of this year’s fair is the 1861 Club, now in its second year. Built by the Kansas State Fair Foundation, the venue has quickly become a popular year-round event space, hosting weddings, fundraisers, and corporate gatherings. Executive Director James Fisher said the club is already booking events as far ahead as 2027.

The Foundation also brought back a crowd favorite absent since 2019: saltwater taffy. Sold in assorted bags featuring 12 flavors — including buttered popcorn and cinnamon — the Kansas State Fair–branded treat is available at the 1861 Club and at the official merchandise booth.

That booth, located in the Fountain House building, is also seeing record sales this year. A new on-demand shirt printing system allows fairgoers to customize designs, colors, and sizes, with plans to fully renovate the space into a retail-style store by next year.

Fair officials say improvements across the fairgrounds, including new asphalt, upgraded lighting, and enhanced sound systems, have drawn praise from visitors — even those traveling cross-country to experience multiple state fairs.

“The fairgrounds look great, and the energy this weekend showed that,” Fisher said. “It’s exciting to be part of something that adds so much value to the community.”

Kansas State Fair sees strong opening weekend

The USD 308 Board of Education will hold its regular meeting this evening at 6 p.m. at the district’s Administration Center.

On the agenda is a Memorandum of Understanding with Trinity United Methodist Church, setting terms for the district to provide bulk lunch services to Trinity’s Treasures Preschool and Childcare Center.

Board members will also consider a resolution for the 2025–2026 Local Option Budget in the amount of $12,439,435.

In addition, the board will vote on the sale of two properties at 2800 and 2804 Morris Road, homes that were built by students through the Career and Technical Education Academy’s building trades program.

Another item calls for approval of $24,137 in upgrades to wiring and software for 11 rooftop HVAC units at the high school, a project needed as the current software is older.&nbsp; The upgrade will tie the units in with the rest of the campus, so they won't have to switch back and forth between two systems.&nbsp;

The next USD 308 Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Sept. 22.

Board of Education to approve budget, upgrades to HVAC systems 

A Texas District Court has returned a decision that gives rights back to property owners and stops radical environmental government. 

 The court ruling will remove the Lesser Prairie Chicken from the list of the endangered species act.  This issue has been going on for many years, and has prevented farmers from working their land, energy producers from extracting oil on their property, and has even prevented civil projects from moving forward. 

Senators Moran and Marshall, and Congressman Mann have been heavily involved in the fight to delist the bird.

Monday, Sept. 8, is one of the most popular days at the Kansas State Fair, thanks to Dillons Dollar Day. Gate admission is just $1 for the general public, or FREE with a Dillons Plus Card (one person per card), making it an affordable way for families to experience the fair.

The day kicks off early with the Emergency Preparedness Exhibit opening at 7:00 a.m., followed by the Kansas Electric Cooperatives Demonstration at the Ad Astra Pavilion at 9:00 a.m. From there, fairgoers can enjoy perennial favorites like Agriland, the Birthing Center, the Butter Sculpture, and the Education Center, all opening at 9:00 a.m.

Animal lovers will find plenty to see, with the Llama Display, Moo-U Guided Barn Tours, and open poultry and rabbit exhibits all starting in the morning. Marching Band Day adds extra energy across the fairgrounds beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The fair really comes alive by midday with Hedrick’s Pig Races at 10:00 a.m. and again throughout the day, plus demonstrations in the Milking Parlor and Honey Exhibits. Chainsaw woodcarvers begin their fast-paced shows at 11:00 a.m.

Families can also take in the Hutchinson Zoo &amp; Friends program, magic and ventriloquism shows, and special demonstrations in the Oz Gallery, including porcelain painting and the Kansas Woodcarvers.

By the afternoon, the pace picks up with the Cowboy Circus, It’s Showtime Circus, and crowd-favorite hypnotist Ron Diamond performing at the Peoples Bank and Trust Arena. Local acts like Ella Wellman and The Bennett Hall Band bring live music to the Lowen Corporation Stage at Lake Talbott.

Educational fun continues with Strataca’s Satisfying Salt Surprises at the Education Center and recycled craft demonstrations at the Oz Gallery.

As evening falls, the entertainment ramps up. The Great Plains Jazz Orchestra will perform at the Capper Building, and the arena will host the Demolition Derby at 7:30 p.m. — a must-see event for thrill-seekers.

Meanwhile, families can enjoy encore circus acts, more live music, and plenty of fair food under the lights.

The winning numbers for Saturday nights estimated $1.8 billion jackpot — the second largest in Powerball history — were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and Powerball 17.

Two jackpot-winning tickets, worth a staggering $1.8 billion, were sold in Texas and Missouri, splitting the record-setting prize.
