Friday football forecast

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sprint cars and stock cars will take center stage at the Nex-Tech Grandstand this weekend as SaltCity Racing wraps up its 2025 season with the ASCS Fairground Showdown on Friday and Saturday nights at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The two-night event will feature the ASCS National Sprint Car Tour along with Stock Car classes. Friday’s program pays $3,000 to win, while Saturday’s finale offers $5,000 to win in the 360 Sprint division.

“I can't believe we’re already talking about the last race of the year,” said SaltCity Racing founder Phil Nightingale. “It seems like we just got started. Time flies when you’re having fun.”

Nightingale said strong community support has helped the track grow each season.

“The support that Hutchinson and our sponsors have given to this racetrack has been huge,” he said. “You can see all the banners around the track, this whole town has rallied behind it. Each year gets a little better, and we’ve got some exciting plans for next year too.”

Both nights will feature the winged 360 sprint cars that made their Hutchinson return earlier this year.

“We’ve had the 305s quite a bit, but these 360s are a whole different animal,” Nightingale said. “They’re faster, they sound better, and when you’re sitting under that grandstand roof, it’s incredible.”

Friday’s schedule includes pits opening at 3 p.m., grandstands at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:45, and racing at 7:30 p.m. Qualifiers from Friday will lock into Saturday’s main show.
On Saturday, pits open at noon, gates at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30, and racing starts at 7 p.m.

Nightingale credited his team, including Nic Baalman, Kyler Fetters, and volunteers from across Kansas, for helping maintain and operate the fairgrounds track.

“It’s not just me,” Nightingale said. “It’s a whole team of people who make this happen. If anyone ever wants to know what it’s like to run a racetrack, come talk to me — I could write a book about it.”

SaltCity Racing closes 2025 season with two-night Fairground Showdown

HUTCHINSON — Sixteen Reno County nonprofit organizations have been awarded a combined $179,319 through the Hutchinson Community Foundation’s second Fund for Reno County Impact Cycle of 2025.

With these latest awards, the foundation has distributed a total of $475,291 this year to 41 organizations addressing community needs throughout the county.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County Endowment serves as a permanent, flexible resource for projects that meet evolving local priorities. Grants are awarded for innovative collaborations, efficiency improvements, critical needs, or opportunities that leverage additional community resources.

Funding for this cycle was enhanced by contributions through the foundation’s Giving Together program from donors Shirley Brandyberry, David and Patty Dick, Angel and Steve Dillon, Peg and John Stephens, and Merna B. Weeks.

Proposals are accepted twice each year, in February and August. The most recent Impact Cycle focused on Community and Economic Development and Strong Organizations initiatives.

Celebrating Community Impact Grantees were recognized during the foundation’s UPLIFT 2025 celebration Oct. 2 at the Reno County Farmers Market Pavilion, where nearly 80 guests gathered for live music by Jim French, local food and drink, and a program honoring this year’s grant recipients.

The evening also featured the annual Gift to Dream Grant, a $2,500 award presented in honor of the Hutch CF Legacy Society, which recognizes donors who have given $10,000 or more to an endowed fund or have made planned gifts. Hutch in Harmony received this year’s grant, selected by NAMI Reno County, the previous year’s recipient.

Attendees also heard brief “Changemaker Chats” spotlighting community progress from Donna Davis (Food Bank of Reno County), Tina Roelfs (City of Sylvia), Lacy Stauffacher (Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services), and Lauren Storm (Greater Hutch).

Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre – $28,301 for installation of a new boiler system.

Pretty Prairie Community Food Pantry Association – $25,000 toward construction of a new community space housing the pantry.

StartUp Hutch – $9,000 for workshops and coaching sessions supporting rural entrepreneurs.

Strong Organizations – $32,292 Grants focused on building the capacity, sustainability, and resilience of local nonprofits.

Cancer Council of Reno County – $7,500 for a strategic marketing initiative.

City of Sylvia – $2,580 for lightweight tables and chairs for community use.

Clothed in Compassion – $6,993 for supplies supporting a 10-week summer cooking course for middle school students.

Riders from across Kansas will hit the road this Saturday, October 11, for the fourth annual Cruise for the Cure Poker Run — the last ride of the season and a chance to support a cause that touches nearly every family.

Hosted by Bretz Injury Law in partnership with Salty Cycles, the benefit ride raises money for the Cancer Council of Reno County (CCRC). After being rained out twice, organizers say the weather forecast looks perfect for the event’s long-awaited return.

“This event was created to support a cause nearly everyone can relate to,” said Casey Ensz with Bretz Injury Law. “Cancer affects almost everyone at some point, and the Cancer Council helps make life a little easier for patients when they need it most.”

Half of all proceeds go directly to the CCRC, which provides transportation, food, and other practical support for local patients. The remaining funds will be distributed among participants — 25% to the best hand, 15% to the second best, and 10% to the worst hand.

The event begins at Salty Cycles, 129 E. Sherman in Hutchinson, with registration at 9:30 a.m. and kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. Riders will make stops at: •&nbsp; Buhler Gas Co., Buhler •&nbsp; Lighthouse Coffee, Inman •&nbsp; Dan's Cycle, Hesston •&nbsp; FTS Trailer Sales, South Hutchinson

Entry is $25 for one poker hand or $50 for three, and the poker run’s final draw will be determined by a skill game at the finish line. Participants will be treated to a free lunch provided by Hickory Stik BBQ, along with door prizes and raffle drawings donated by local businesses.

While the event is popular with motorcycle enthusiasts, all vehicles are welcome — from classic cars to everyday sedans. “If it’s street legal, bring it,” Ensz said. “It’s a great excuse to get out one more time before winter, and it all goes toward helping local cancer patients.”

Apple Lane Animal Hospital is welcoming a new face to its veterinary team. Dr. Erica Miller introduced Dr. Logan Druecker during a recent interview on the BW Morning Show with Glenn Grunwald, marking his official debut as part of the clinic’s regular on-air pet health segment.

Druecker, a native of Inman, said joining the practice has been a homecoming. “It worked out really well,” he said. “I’m glad to be closer to my family, who are now in McPherson. It’s nice to stay in Kansas and serve the communities I know.”

A graduate of Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Druecker said he was drawn to small animal care while studying in Manhattan. “I kept an open mind through vet school,” he said, “but I realized I really enjoyed the relationships you build helping people care for their pets.”

Fall and Winter Pet Care Reminders Dr. Miller and Dr. Druecker said fall weather brings continued concerns for fleas and allergies — problems that persist even after the summer heat fades.

“The bugs are bad right now, especially fleas,” Miller said. “This kind of cool, damp weather is perfect for them, so don’t stop preventatives until we’ve had several hard frosts.”

She added that seasonal allergies remain common for both pets and people. “If your pet is itching, chewing their paws, or has watery eyes, those same pollens and molds that bother us are bothering them too,” she said. “Talk to your vet before it gets worse.”

Druecker emphasized the importance of proper outdoor shelter as temperatures drop. “Even dogs that live outside need dry, insulated spaces to escape the cold and rain,” he said. “Keeping them dry is key to keeping them warm.”

Halloween safety for pets: Both veterinarians urged owners to be mindful as Halloween approaches. Costumes and candy can pose unexpected risks.

“Know your pet,” Miller said. “Some dogs love wearing costumes; others freeze up and hate it. Make sure nothing is too tight, blocks their vision, or has parts they could chew and swallow.”

Candy is another major hazard. “Chocolate and sugar-free candies can make pets very sick,” she said. “Dark chocolate and xylitol — found in sugar-free sweets — are especially dangerous. Keep the candy up high, away from curious paws.”

Vaccinations and Disease Prevention: October is National Pet Wellness Month, and Miller reminded listeners that vaccines remain one of the most effective ways to protect pets.

“This year, the American Veterinary Medical Association added leptospirosis to the list of core vaccines,” Miller said. “That means it’s recommended for all dogs, not just those who hunt or hike.”

Druecker explained that leptospirosis, spread through the urine of wildlife such as raccoons and possums, can cause severe kidney damage — and is contagious to humans. “Your dog doesn’t have to be out in the country,” he said. “Even walking through dew-covered grass in your yard can be a risk.”

Wildlife, parasites, and other concerns The veterinarians also discussed increasing encounters with wildlife, including armadillos and a new species of tick recently reported in eastern Kansas.

“Armadillos can carry leprosy,” Miller said. “If you need to trap them, don’t handle them directly. Call someone trained.”

She added that the new tick species, capable of reproducing asexually, could spread rapidly if not controlled. “It’s another reason flea and tick prevention is critical year-round,” she said.

Holiday planning and microchipping: With the holidays approaching, Miller and Druecker encouraged families to think carefully before gifting pets.

“Pets are a long-term commitment,” Druecker said. “Make sure everyone in the household agrees and that the pet’s energy level and needs match your lifestyle.”

Miller added that microchipping remains the best safeguard against lost pets. “Even indoor cats can slip out during family gatherings,” she said. “A microchip gives you the best chance of getting them home safely.”

It’s nice to stay in Kansas and serve the communities I know.”A graduate of Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Druecker said he was drawn to small animal care while studying in Manhattan. “I kept an open mind through vet school,” he said, “but I realized I really enjoyed the relationships you build helping people care for their pets.”Fall and Winter Pet Care Reminders Dr. Miller and Dr. Druecker said fall weather brings continued concerns for fleas and allergies — problems that persist even after the summer heat fades.“The bugs are bad right now, especially fleas,” Miller said. “This kind of cool, damp weather is perfect for them, so don’t stop preventatives until we’ve had several hard frosts.”She added that seasonal allergies remain common for both pets and people. “If your pet is itching, chewing their paws, or has watery eyes, those same pollens and molds that bother us are bothering them too,” she said. “Talk to your vet before it gets worse.”Druecker emphasized the importance of proper outdoor shelter as temperatures drop. “Even dogs that live outside need dry, insulated spaces to escape the cold and rain,” he said. “Keeping them dry is key to keeping them warm.”Halloween safety for pets: Both veterinarians urged owners to be mindful as Halloween approaches. Costumes and candy can pose unexpected risks.“Know your pet,” Miller said. “Some dogs love wearing costumes; others freeze up and hate it. Make sure nothing is too tight, blocks their vision, or has parts they could chew and swallow.”Candy is another major hazard. “Chocolate and sugar-free candies can make pets very sick,” she said. “Dark chocolate and xylitol — found in sugar-free sweets — are especially dangerous. Keep the candy up high, away from curious paws.”Vaccinations and Disease Prevention: October is National Pet Wellness Month, and Miller reminded listeners that vaccines remain one of the most effective ways to protect pets.“This year, the American Veterinary Medical Association added leptospirosis to the list of core vaccines,” Miller said. “That means it’s recommended for all dogs, not just those who hunt or hike.”Druecker explained that leptospirosis, spread through the urine of wildlife such as raccoons and possums, can cause severe kidney damage — and is contagious to humans. “Your dog doesn’t have to be out in the country,” he said. “Even walking through dew-covered grass in your yard can be a risk.”Wildlife, parasites, and other concerns The veterinarians also discussed increasing encounters with wildlife, including armadillos and a new species of tick recently reported in eastern Kansas.“Armadillos can carry leprosy,” Miller said. “If you need to trap them, don’t handle them directly. Brennan Mills is not just a second-year graduate student pursuing his master’s in English online; he is a rising star in the Kansas City educational community. Brennan is currently teaching middle school English at Indian Woods Middle School in the Shawnee Mission School District, where he has made an indelible mark on his students and peers alike.

Having completed his undergraduate degree in May of 2022, he immersed himself in the joys of teaching. Brennan quickly fell in love with his role as an educator. “After the first week, I knew I was in the right spot. I had a great first year, and I was folded into a band of experienced teachers who were outstanding at their jobs,” he recalls. 

That first year was not just about teaching; it was a foundation built on collaboration. His passionate approach to English Education was quickly recognized, and his school nominated Brennan for the prestigious Kansas Horizon Award. This award recognizes promising first-year educators across the state, providing them with a platform to shine.

Brennan's thoughtful and innovative methodologies caught the eye of his principal, Lacy Warren, who praised him for his commitment to fostering connections with students and their families. His weekly communication with parents ensures they stay informed about their children's progress and learning, bridging the gap between home and school. “Mr. Mills goes above and beyond to communicate with families,” said Principal Warren. For Brennan, teaching is more than a job; it's about respect, understanding, and building a strong foundation for each student.

Following the recognition by his district, Brennan's accolades continued to grow. He triumphantly advanced through the congressional district and state levels, ultimately being celebrated at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference. Reflecting on his accomplishments, he shares humbly, “Award or no award, I would have kept doing exactly what I did, but it’s nice to be recognized.”

Brennan’s dedication to education didn’t stem solely from his classroom experiences; it also flourished from his adventures abroad. During the summer of 2025, he embarked on a transformative journey to Alnwick Castle in England as part of a study abroad program.

FHSU Alnwick is a 3-week, on-site, short-term faculty-led study abroad program located at Alnwick Castle in Alnwick, England, Northumberland. Open to all FHSU undergraduate and graduate students with any major, the program includes a 4-week online summer course with the latter 3 weeks taught onsite at Alnwick Castle.

Home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle is steeped in history and significance. Built after the Norman conquest, the castle has undergone extensive renovations to accommodate educational residency programs while preserving its historical integrity. 

Renowned for its appearances in beloved films such as Harry Potter, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Transformers: The Last Knight, the castle also offers visitors a chance to engage in activities like medieval craft demonstrations, Harry Potter broomstick flying lessons, and archery lessons.

Encouraged by FHSU professor Dr. Perry Harrison, Brennan enrolled in two memorable courses: “Outlaws through the Ages” and a travel writing course led by Lisa Bell, director of our writing center and instructor of English and Modern Languages. The latter was a significant challenge as he ventured outside his usual writing style. “It was a refreshing challenge and an informative dive into a new genre,” he remarked. 

Alongside his wife, Brennan spent three weeks exploring the depths of English culture and heritage, traveling from the historic Stonehenge to the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland.

As he balances his responsibilities as a full-time educator and a student, Brennan appreciates the support from Fort Hays State University. He focuses on old British literature and has taken several courses with Perry Harrison. He has also enjoyed his courses with Dr. Leuschner and Lisa Bell. “It has been rigorous but also par for the course. Having a full-time job, teaching from 8 to 4, and then coming home and working on graduate coursework. The professors have been super accommodating.”

His students are fortunate to have a dedicated teacher who enjoys engaging in discussions. Brennan introduces “Philosophy Fridays” in his 8th-grade English class, where students tackle big ideas through the lens of classical philosophers like Plato. “It’s a highlight of my week. It’s a way to engage with students on a deeper level,” he explains. He believes that middle schoolers possess incredible potential and curiosity, making them uniquely suited for exploring life’s profound questions.

Brennan Mills stands out as a dedicated educator and an inspirational figure for future teachers. With aspirations to continue teaching middle school English, he emphasizes the importance of the journey. “They are on the brink of everything, and the possibilities are limitless,” he says about his students. As he forges ahead in his career and studies, this remarkable educator's future clearly holds great promise.

BrightHouse opens Jean’s House, expands support for domestic violence survivors in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — United Way of Reno County will host its annual Community Work Day on Saturday, bringing together about 350 volunteers to complete more than 20 service projects across Reno County.

The day of service unites individuals, businesses and community groups in hands-on projects that directly support local nonprofits and community spaces. Volunteers will take part in activities such as landscaping, painting and park cleanups.

This year’s event includes two major changes. The first is a shift from the traditional late August date to the fall. The second adds a spring event, with United Way planning to host two Community Work Days each year. The change is intended to provide cooler weather, more comfortable working conditions and greater accessibility for volunteers of all ages and abilities.

“Community Work Day is one of our favorite ways to see United Way’s mission in action,” said Lacey Mills, United Way of Reno County CEO. “By coming together twice a year, we’re able to meet more community needs, connect more volunteers and keep that spirit of giving alive year-round.”

All volunteer spots for this weekend’s projects have been filled, but United Way encourages community members, businesses and civic groups to get involved in the next Community Work Day, scheduled for April 25, 2026. One week into the ongoing federal government shutdown, Kansas officials are detailing how services for veterans are being affected across the state.

Bill Turner, Director of the Kansas Department of Veteran Services, confirms that while several federal-level programs are temporarily halted, all state-managed veteran services remain fully operational. That includes the state’s veteran homes, cemeteries, and service representative offices.

According to the department’s website, the following federal services remain unaffected by the shutdown: •&nbsp; VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers are open and providing all services. •&nbsp; VA benefits such as compensation, pension, education, and housing continue to be processed and delivered. •&nbsp; Burials at VA national cemeteries and applications for markers and headstones will continue. •&nbsp; The Board of Veterans’ Appeals is still issuing decisions. •&nbsp; Call centers, including the Veterans Crisis Line, remain open 24/7. •&nbsp; Suicide prevention programs, homelessness services, and caregiver support are ongoing.

However, other federal programs and operations have been suspended until the shutdown ends, including: •&nbsp; Transition assistance and career counseling services for veterans. •&nbsp; VA regional offices and some call centers, including GI Bill and National&nbsp; Cemetery hotlines. •&nbsp; Public Affairs and unfunded outreach, such as press responses and Vet Resources emails. •&nbsp; Grounds maintenance and headstone placement at VA cemeteries. •&nbsp; Applications for pre-need burial and new Presidential Memorial Certificates. •&nbsp; Outreach to local, tribal, and community partners by VA Central Office.

Proposals sought in Reno County/Hutchinson’s fight against addiction

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of West Sherman and North Adams.

The first laundry in Hutchinson was started by I.N. Wooddell in the summer of 1886. The company went out of business in November of 1891.

In April of 1892, Emmet Hutton and Charles Oswald bought the machinery and opened a laundry business at 121-127 W. Sherman.

On Dec. 29, 1898, it officially became the American Steam Laundry. The first photo shows all the employees out front at opening.

The second photo shows everyone out front again in 1915 after making the transition from horse-drawn delivery to mechanized trucking.

The third photo shows the fleet growing larger in 1919.

In 1936, A. Lewis Oswald succeeded in ownership and the name became American Laundry &amp; Zoric Cleaners.

In 1955, Everett Alberson bought the business and changed the name to American Cleaners &amp; Shirt Salon.

In 1965, he changed the name again to American Uniform and Wiping Towel.

In 1968, the business closed and the building was razed in 1969.

Cooper Tire, which had been located for years on South Walnut, purchased the property and erected a newer, modern building on the site, and Cooper Tire Company moved to this location. The fourth photo shows the location today, still family-owned Cooper Tire after 55 years at this location. Craig Cooper is the business owner.

📷 Throwback Thursday: American Steam Laundry - Vol. 143

The Reno County Commission hosted a joint meeting with Kansas legislators Tuesday evening to review the county’s legislative priorities and strengthen communication ahead of the 2026 legislative session.

The meeting took place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Blue Dragon Room at Hutchinson Community College. Commissioners Don Bogner, Ron Hirst, Randy Parks, and Richard Winger were in attendance, along with County Administrator Randy Partington and several department heads, including Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar, Health Department Director Karla Nichols, and County Appraiser Michael Plank.

State legislators joining the discussion included Senator Michael Murphy and Representatives Joe Seiwert, Kevin Schwertfeger, and Kyler Sweely.

Commissioners and legislators used the session to exchange updates and discuss local priorities expected to impact Reno County in the coming year. Topics typically include infrastructure funding, public health needs, property tax issues, emergency management, and other key policy areas that require coordination between local and state government.

The meeting was part of an ongoing effort by the commission to keep legislators informed of county concerns and ensure Reno County’s voice is represented in Topeka.
