Kansas State University, Iowa State University and University College Dublin are building veterinary medicine partnerships and creating global academic and research collaborations among the three organizations.

The presidents of all three universities — Kansas State University President Richard Linton, Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen and University College Dublin President Orla Feely — signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding on Friday, Aug. 22, at the One Health Ag Tech Summit in Ireland.

The agreement among the three universities focuses on building academic exchange, cooperation and collaboration with the veterinary medicine colleges at each institution.

"This partnership will provide tremendous value to our College of Veterinary Medicine," said Beth Davis, interim dean of K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine. "As a next-generation land-grant university, forging important partnerships like this helps our K-State veterinary medicine students, researchers and faculty members to do good in Kansas and across the world. We look forward to working with our collaborators at Iowa State University and University College Dublin."

The signing event and One Health Ag Tech Summit are connected with the&nbsp;<a href="https://collegefootballireland.com/games/k-state-vs-iowa-state/">Aer Lingus College Football Classic</a>, which will occur Saturday, Aug. 23, when the K-State football team faces Iowa State in the season kickoff game.

The academic exchange agreement focuses on promoting the teaching and research activities of each institution while also deepening the understanding of the economic, cultural and social environment of each institution.

"Today's agreement signing is the culmination of highly valued collaborative efforts from all institutions involved to further enhance the educational experience for our students," said University College Dublin President Orla Feely.

Dan&nbsp;Grooms, the Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State, said the opportunity for collaboration on a global level is vital for addressing issues such as antimicrobial resistance.

"Antimicrobial resistance impacts animals, humans, the environment and plants. There are valuable perspectives that come from conversations with people around the world to understand how we combat antimicrobial resistance," Grooms said. "The practicalities of what can and cannot be done are different in other countries, which is why we must think of this at a global level."

Through the newly formed partnership, the three organizations are exploring many ways to collaborate, including:

• Promoting institutional exchanges by inviting faculty and staff to participate in a variety of teaching and research activities as well as professional development.

• Receiving undergraduate and graduate students for periods of study and research.&nbsp;

•&nbsp;Organizing coordinated teaching activities.

•&nbsp;Organizing symposia, conferences, short courses and other meetings on academic and research issues.

•&nbsp;Carrying out joint research and continuing education programs.

•&nbsp;Exchanging information related to developments in teaching, student development and research at each institution.&nbsp;

"Having College of Veterinary Medicine students visit University College Dublin and learn about veterinary medicine in a well-established program and understand the profession in a different culture will greatly benefit our students," Davis said. "Additionally, having students from University College Dublin or Iowa State visit K-State will build on our ability to exchange knowledge and skills that are well established throughout our curriculum, particularly in the fourth-year clinical rotation."

The partnership agreement signing was part of the One Health Ag Tech Summit, an international event hosted by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.enterprise-ireland.com/en/">Enterprise Ireland</a>. The summit is from Aug. 20-23 and has brought together nearly 90 researchers, faculty members, industry leaders and innovative entrepreneurs from the U.S. and Ireland. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds have also participated in the summit.

The summit has highlighted the three universities — Kansas State University, Iowa State University and University College Dublin — and focused on shared interests and emerging opportunities in the fields of agricultural technology/digital agriculture and One Health. One Health is a multidisciplinary approach that recognizes the interconnected health of people, animals, plants and their shared environments.

Throughout the four-day summit, participants have engaged in meaningful dialogue, facilitated expert knowledge exchange and cultivated long-term partnerships.

"Our goal through the One Health Ag Tech Summit is to drive industry progress by building collaboration and advancing innovation," said Rachelle Banwart, executive director of K-State&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/engagement/innovation-and-partnerships/corporate-engagement/">Corporate Engagement</a>. "We wanted to highlight the connections between academia and industry and also bring our next-generation land-grant university mission into action: creating new ways to engage with partners and companies across the world."

The One Health Ag Tech Summit has also included roundtable discussions and industry panels, connections among leading industry representatives and academic researchers, relevant industry site visits, and best practice sharing and partnership exploration.

Several Kansas State University leaders and researchers have participated in the events, including:

A commitment to collaborate

The Hutchinson Police Department has welcomed three new officers to its ranks, each bringing a unique background and motivation for serving the community.

Each of these three new officers completed 14 weeks of training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, where they gained experience in firearms, driving, and scenario-based exercises.&nbsp;

Trey Morris, a Buhler native, said his decision to pursue law enforcement was inspired by his father, Stephen Morris, who served with the Kansas Highway Patrol.&nbsp;

Morris hopes to eventually serve in either the traffic division or the repeat offender unit. “One of my biggest reasons was wanting to follow in my dad’s footsteps,” Morris said. “At the end of the day, it’s about helping people, and that’s what I want to do.”

Aracely Hernandez, a Hutchinson High School graduate, entered law enforcement after working as an emergency technician in the hospital setting. She said her experience assisting patients inspired her to continue serving others in a new way.

Hernandez is also passionate about representing women in the field. “Women in law enforcement is very empowering. Women can do it too—I enjoy it just as much as anybody,” she said. Looking ahead, Hernandez hopes to become a school resource officer. “I want to focus on patrol now, but in the next few years, I’d love to work in schools and help connect with kids.”

Grant Gadbury, who previously spent more than a decade in the trucking industry, said he wanted a career change that allowed him to contribute more directly to the community. His father-in-law, a former Wichita police officer and now a high school principal, inspired him to pursue the profession. 

“If you’re looking for something fulfilling with a solid support system around you, this is a great thing to do,” Gadbury said. He added that he’s approaching his new career one step at a time: “I want to be successful where I’m at and see where that takes me.”

The three officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in early August and are now in field training.&nbsp;

Three day weather outlook 

The City of Hutchinson is alerting drivers to a temporary traffic change at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Poplar Street.

Following a traffic accident, the signal lights at the intersection are currently out of service. City officials report the lights will remain down until early next week while crews complete necessary repairs.

Until then, the intersection will function as a four-way stop. Motorists are urged to approach the area with caution, allow extra time for travel, and be mindful of other drivers and pedestrians.

Traffic accident causes temporary traffic change

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins alongside Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senator Bill Hagerty, Representative John Rose, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden, announced USDA will no longer fund taxpayer dollars for solar panels on productive farmland or allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in USDA projects. 

Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose 2 million acres by 2027. This problem is not just in Tennessee, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by nearly 50%. That is why the Department is taking action.&nbsp;

“Our prime farmland should not be wasted and replaced with green new deal subsidized solar panels. It has been disheartening to see our beautiful farmland displaced by solar projects, especially in rural areas that have strong agricultural heritage. One of the largest barriers of entry for new and young farmers is access to land. Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available,”&nbsp;said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “We are no longer allowing businesses to use your taxpayer dollars to fund solar projects on prime American farmland, and we will no longer allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in our USDA-funded projects.”&nbsp;

“Tennesseans know that our farmland is our national security, our economic future, and our children's heritage. We were honored to welcome Secretary Rollins to Tennessee this week, and I’m grateful for her leadership to defend America’s farmland from foreign adversaries and protect our food supply,”&nbsp;said Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.&nbsp;

“Secretary Rollins understands that food security is national security, and preserving prime farmland for agricultural production is a key component of protecting our food supply. I look forward to working with her and this Administration to ensure any incentives for renewable energy projects have commonsense safeguards in place that provide options for producers while protecting our most productive farmland,”&nbsp;said House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15).&nbsp;

“Transforming prime farmland into fields of solar panels drives up land prices on behalf of foreign investments, and limits production capabilities for surrounding farmers and ranchers. Taxpayers should not have to subsidize the transition of productive and useful farmland into a desert of solar panels,”&nbsp;said Senator Roger Marshall.&nbsp;“I stand with Secretary Rollins and the Trump administration, who continue to show that they are fighting for rural America and putting our farmers and ranchers first.”&nbsp;

"I strongly support Secretary Rollins’ action today implementing President Trump’s executive order de-prioritizing undependable energy sources, and protecting our prime farmland for much/needed food production. Ending wasteful taxpayer Green New Scam subsidies that have driven up energy costs and taken farmland out of production are long overdue. This action protects farmland so important to our Eastern Shore economy, strengthens American agriculture, and puts our energy independence first,”&nbsp;said Representative Andy Harris (MD-01).&nbsp;

“Green New Deal subsidies have distorted the energy market and supplanted American farmland. USDA is taking decisive action which complements policies I supported in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ending the misuse of taxpayer dollars and upholding our national security interests in energy infrastructure. I appreciate Secretary Rollins’ leadership in restoring common sense to these USDA programs,”&nbsp;said Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03).&nbsp;

This action will rapidly eliminate the market distortions and costs imposed on taxpayers by reducing energy subsidies and builds upon the repeal of and modifications to wind, solar, and other “green” energy tax credits in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It will further USDA’s determination to end taxpayer support for unaffordable and unreliable “green” energy sources and ensure the supply chain consists of American products and manufacturing.&nbsp;

Effective immediately, USDA will implement the following programmatic actions:&nbsp;

• For the USDA Rural Development Business and Industry (B&amp;I) Guaranteed Loan Program wind and solar projects are not eligible.

•For the USDA Rural Development Rural Energy for America Program Guaranteed Loan Program (REAP Guaranteed Loan Program), USDA will ensure that American farmers, ranchers and producers utilizing wind and solar energy sources will install units that are right-sized for their facilities. If project applications include ground mount solar photovoltaic systems larger than 50kW or ground mount solar photovoltaic systems that cannot document historical energy usage, they will no longer be eligible for the REAP Guaranteed Loan Program, and priority points will no longer be given for REAP grants.

Interfaith Housing and Community Services is continuing its mission to strengthen local families and neighborhoods with new programs and partnerships aimed at building skills, repairing homes, and expanding affordable housing.

Chief Operations Officer Lacey Staffacher said the organization, which operates independently with a long-standing staff of 11, has recently joined forces with Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) and USD 308 through a HUD FRAME grant — Fostering Residential Advancement through Mentoring and Education. The initiative provides apprenticeships for students to learn construction skills while working on affordable housing projects.

“Our first project will be a new single-family home in the 900 block of East 10th,” Staffacher explained. “This gives apprentices valuable, hands-on experience while addressing the community’s need for affordable housing. Interfaith will be the first to employ the apprentices, but our hope is they’ll go on to build strong careers with other employers as well.”

Beyond new construction, Interfaith continues to provide home repair services across the region. With the help of an FHLB grant, the organization will oversee 20 to 25 repair projects in Sterling and Alden. Seniors also benefit through Interfaith’s long-running Home Repair (HR) program, which provides accessibility modifications such as wheelchair ramps to help older residents remain in their homes safely.

“This program is the foundation Interfaith was built on,” Staffacher said. “It gives seniors 55 and up the opportunity to make essential repairs so they can continue living independently.”

Financial Education and Tax Credit Program

Interfaith also empowers individuals to build long-term financial stability through its Kansas Individual Development Account (IDA) program. Funded through the sale of 75% state tax credits, the program matches participants’ savings two-to-one. Participants who save up to $3,000 can receive as much as $6,000 in matching funds to purchase a home, pursue higher education, start a business, or make major home repairs.

“The financial education component is just as valuable as the matching dollars,” Staffacher said. “Participants complete training in credit building, budgeting, and asset-specific planning, giving them the tools to succeed.”

Affordable Housing and Transitional Programs

Interfaith currently manages more than 30 affordable housing units for seniors at Evergreen Townhomes and Woodland Park Townhomes in Hutchinson, with income-based rents ranging from about $300 to $700.

For younger residents, the Lighthouse program provides safe, fully furnished housing for 18- to 25-year-olds experiencing homelessness. The program offers not only shelter but also resources and support to help young adults transition into stability.

“Homelessness doesn’t always look like living on the streets,” Staffacher noted. “For many young people, it means couch surfing or not having a safe place to sleep. Lighthouse gives them stability and support to achieve their goals.”

Staffacher emphasized that Interfaith’s programs reflect its core mission — equipping individuals and families with tools to achieve financial independence and housing stability.

“Whether it’s apprentices learning construction, seniors modifying their homes, or young adults finding safe housing, we are building stronger families and communities every day,” she said.

The trio completed the intensive law enforcement training program, which equips recruits with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve Hutchinson with professionalism and integrity.

Following their graduation, the officers will begin their field training in the coming weeks, where they will continue to learn under the guidance of experienced officers while gaining real-world experience on patrol.

The department extended its congratulations to Phillips, Melillo, and Padilla, noting their commitment to public service and dedication to protecting the community.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Cheney State Park Marina public water supply system in Reno County.

The advisory had been issued after a loss of pressure in the system, which can increase the risk of bacterial contamination by reducing chlorine levels. KDHE officials say such advisories are precautionary measures to protect public health.

Following the advisory, water samples from the Cheney State Park Marina were tested at a certified laboratory. The results showed no evidence of bacterial contamination, and officials determined that all conditions that placed the system at risk have been resolved.

Public water suppliers in Kansas are required to alert customers quickly in the event of a system failure or shutdown. KDHE issues both the advisories and the rescind notices once laboratory testing confirms the water is safe.

A newly released draft floodplain map could place large sections of Hutchinson into the 100-year floodplain, raising concerns for homeowners, schools, and businesses across the city. 

The State of Kansas and FEMA unveiled the draft maps Monday, and City Engineer Evan Patterson presented the findings to the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday. The new maps reveal broad swaths of floodplain running northwest to southeast through the city, marking a sharp increase from the 2021 maps still in effect. 

While the draft maps are a slight improvement over a version issued in June, Patterson said the changes remain significant. If finalized, property owners in the floodplain could face new requirements, including mandatory flood insurance for those with federally backed mortgages. Development in these areas would also require floodplain permits and additional construction standards. 

“The earliest the maps could take effect is 2027, but we’re hopeful it will be later,” Patterson said, noting that Hutchinson has time to complete stormwater projects that could reduce the impacted area. The city has identified eight such projects, all of which could be completed by city crews and factored into the final maps. 

City officials also plan to review the models used to develop the maps, focusing on rainfall data, topography, and especially drainage infrastructure. “Drainage structures are where our review could make the most difference,” Patterson explained, pointing to work already underway on stormwater improvements. 

The potential impacts extend beyond homeowners. USD 308’s proposed new middle school sits within the newly mapped floodplain, meaning construction would need to be raised at least three feet above projected water levels—an expensive requirement involving dirt work and site elevation. Existing schools, city facilities, and subdivisions could also face costly adjustments. 

City Manager Enrico Villegas told council members he has scheduled discussions with U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran’s office to explore federal funding opportunities to help mitigate the effects. 

Officials stressed that the flooding risk in question stems not from Cow Creek but from localized rainfall combined with Hutchinson’s flat terrain, limited slope, and a lack of detention ponds. Standing water in streets and yards has long been an issue, and city leaders are weighing solutions such as widening ditches and expanding stormwater capacity. 

Some residents may qualify for reduced rates under the National Flood Insurance Program if their homes were built before floodplain designation. Still, Patterson acknowledged it would be a financial burden for many families. 

“We’ve essentially bought ourselves about two years,” a city representative said. “Anything we can get done in that time will be factored into the model and could shrink the floodplain.” 

City leaders cautioned against opting out of the federal flood program, noting it would make Hutchinson ineligible for federal disaster assistance if flooding occurred.

The Reno County Public Works Department has announced that the Buhler Road railroad crossing, located between Highway 50 and Avenue G, will be closed to traffic through Saturday, August 23, 2025.

The closure is necessary to allow BNSF Railway crews to complete repair work at the crossing. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes during this period and use caution when traveling in the area.

The county appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while this important infrastructure maintenance is completed.

Some of the fastest dirt late models in the region will roar into the Kansas State Fairgrounds this weekend for the 2025 Super Dirt Showdown, a two-night racing event expected to draw competitors from across Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Colorado.

With some cars topping 900 horsepower, the showdown promises edge-of-your-seat action as the Kansas-based Rebel Late Model division squares off against Oklahoma’s Sooner division for bragging rights — and a share of $50,000 in prize money.

Racing kicks off both Friday and Saturday, with pits opening at 3 p.m., grandstand gates at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:45 p.m., and the green flag dropping at 7:30 p.m.

Friday is Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Night, also designated as Kids Night. Thanks to the hospital’s sponsorship, children 12 and under will receive free admission.&nbsp;

“This community has really rallied behind the track,” said Salt City Racing promoter Phil Nightingale. “We don’t just see them as sponsors — they’re partners who are helping us make this possible.”

Nightingale said the track surface is in excellent condition following recent rain and grading. The historic half-mile oval — the largest in Kansas — is expected to provide ideal conditions for the showdown.

Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets online at <a href="http://saltcityracingllc.com">saltcityracingllc.com</a> or through the MyRacePass app, though tickets will also be available at the gate. QR codes at the entrance will allow fans to skip the ticket line and head straight to the grandstands.

This weekend marks the only August event at the fairgrounds racetrack. Racing will resume after the Kansas State Fair on September 19, with another two-day event scheduled for October 10–11.

“This is going to be one of the biggest weekends of the year,” Nightingale said. “Whether you’re a longtime fan or brand new to dirt track racing, it’s the perfect chance to come out, enjoy some great weather, and see some of the best racing in the region.”

Hutchinson Fire Department crews responded to a reported structure fire Friday morning in the 100 block of West Campbell Street.

Firefighters were dispatched at 9:43 a.m. and arrived to find light smoke coming from a small residential structure. Upon entering the home, crews located a smoldering electrical fire in the basement. The fire was quickly extinguished, and firefighters conducted a thorough search of the basement to ensure it had not spread through the floor joists.

Two occupants of the home had already made it outside safely before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to a small area of floor joists in the basement, though smoke damage was reported throughout the home’s living space.

Hutchinson Fire expressed appreciation to partner agencies who assisted at the scene, including Kansas Gas, Evergy, Reno County EMS, Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications, and the Hutchinson Police Department.

Buhler High to stage “Bye Bye Birdie” next weekend

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;

The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;

“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;

The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;

Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;

“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;

Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;

Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;

The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch Post Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;<div><iframe title="Sheldon Stewart - HutchCC" allowtransparency="true" height="150" width="100%" style="border: none; min-width: min(100%, 430px);height:150px;" scrolling="no" data-name="pb-iframe-player" src="https://www.podbean.com/player-v2/?i=3yvdw-193dffc-pb&from=pb6admin&share=1&download=1&rtl=0&fonts=Arial&skin=60a0c8&font-color=auto&logo_link=episode_page&btn-skin=ff6d00" loading="lazy"></iframe></div>“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;
