TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, today, announced that new legislation establishing a system for the instant verification of auto insurance has been signed into law. SB 42 contains provisions that give the Kansas Department of Insurance the authority to establish an insurance verification system that can be utilized by the Kansas Department of Revenue, law enforcement, the court system and county treasurers - all who are required to verify insurance.

“Driving without insurance is against the law. Period,” said Schmidt. “No longer should law-abiding Kansans have to foot the bill for this illegal activity.”

The new law creates the framework that allows the Kansas Department of Insurance to issue a bid for contract with a vendor to create and implement the verification system. The new system will be entirely funded by the Kansas Department of Insurance and is required to be in place by July 1, 2026.

The Insurance Information Institute estimates that approximately 8.0% of the vehicles registered in Kansas are uninsured. During calendar years 2021 and 2022, insurance companies writing auto insurance in Kansas paid $51.9 million in claims involving uninsured motorists. These claims are directly related to prospective premium rates.

“If you have ever been in an accident with an uninsured motorist, you know your policy takes the hit and your rates go up,” said Schmidt. “I think that’s wrong, and that’s why I proposed this legislation to give the state better tools to stop uninsured motorists.”

Hutch Rec will host area adaptive youth at the annual Youth Adaptive Track Meet on April 23, sponsored by Kiwanis of Downtown Hutchinson.

This year’s meet features 66 students in 7th-12th&nbsp;grades from Hutchinson, Buhler, and Nickerson school districts. It also includes more than 30 volunteer students from Trinity High School, as well as members of the Kiwanis Club and community volunteers with Hutch Rec. Kiwanis is also serving lunch to participants, teachers, and volunteers.

Kansas Farm Bureau is fully engaged in the process of developing policy for members’ consideration at our annual meeting in December. The Resolutions Committee has received your ideas from issue surfacing and we have started developing proposals for the full delegation to consider.

We all know that we live in interesting times, and it is even more critical that we hear from all of our members and gather as many opinions as we can. The policy in our book reflects the direction our members want Kansas Farm Bureau staff to engage with legislators and other leaders as they make decisions that affect your farm or ranch.

The grassroots nature of our policy book is what gives Kansas Farm Bureau and the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) their clout in Topeka and Washington D.C. Each one of those policies came from a member and were developed with the help of other members until they were adopted by Kansas Farm Bureau and, in the case of national policy, (AFBF).

I hope you had an opportunity to attend an issue surfacing meeting, but if you did not and want to submit an idea or an issue for the Resolutions Committee, you can do so at www.kfb.org/advocacy. Again, I remind you that our policy and our organization are strong because of members and their ability to have a voice in the direction of the organization.

This fall we will have 10 listening posts all across the state, and it will be your opportunity to voice your opinion on any of the proposed policy changes. The more members who weigh in on policy changes, the stronger those changes are. Each of our 10 districts are represented on the Resolutions Committee, and I encourage you to reach out to yours with ideas or questions. Every member has the right to voice their opinion and we are stronger because of the varied ideas.

In December at the Kansas Farm Bureau Annual Meeting we will finalize the proposed changes in policy and that policy book will be our marching orders when it comes to working with legislators at the state and federal level. Those are your words and your ideas and that is why it is so important that we have as much input as possible.

Will we always agree with the policy? Probably not, but it is in the book because a majority of the delegates from all 105 counties voted for it. You know what? If you don’t agree with the policy you have the ability to lead the charge to change it. Everything we do is member driven, which means what we do can be changed by, you, the member.

I hope you will engage in the policy development process. Yes, we have already started the wheels in motion, but there is still time for each member to weigh in with their ideas. If you are not a member, there is still time to join and jump in.

I believe in our process, and I truly believe it is because we are a grassroots organization who has a seat at the table for everyone involved in agriculture its up to you to be involved.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson has officially transitioned to a new website address, hutchinsonks.gov, in an effort to strengthen digital security and more clearly identify official city communications.

The change, which took effect this week, includes updates to the city’s website and, soon, its email addresses. All city email addresses will eventually end in @hutchinsonks.gov. Current email addresses will continue to function during the transition period.

This update not only helps protect resident information but also makes it easier for people to recognize official messages from the City of Hutchinson the city said in a Facebook post.&nbsp;

City officials are encouraging residents to update their bookmarks and contact lists to reflect the new domain.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community Concerts is preparing to launch its 2025–26 concert season with a full slate of performances and a commitment to affordability, community, and cultural enrichment. The series, which dates back to 1936, remains one of the city’s best-kept entertainment secrets.

“We're probably the best value in town,” said Craig Johnson, a local organizer and board member for the group. “Six concerts for $60, plus access to concerts in Great Bend as part of our reciprocal agreement—it’s really hard to beat.”

Tickets are now on sale online at HutchinsonConcerts.com, and the organization will host an in-person ticket drive April 30 through May 2 at First National Bank in downtown Hutchinson.

Partnering with Allied Concert Services, Hutchinson’s concert series features nationally and internationally touring performers. Allied’s Craig Risnes, who helps select and book acts for dozens of cities across 16 states, joined Johnson for a recent interview.

“The idea is to bring world-class music to communities that don’t necessarily have big-city access to the arts,” said Risnes. “It’s about exposure—for families, kids, music lovers—and creating experiences that last.”

The upcoming 2025–26 season opens September 20 with The Mexican Brass, a tight-knit, classical brass quintet known for their musicianship and playful stage presence. Reesness described the group as “fun, sharp, and globally seasoned, with over 20 years performing together.”

Dan Miller &amp; Wendy (Nov. 1) – A cowboy duo from Cody, Wyoming, delivering country music, cowboy poetry and gospel.

Nate Hentz, Pops Pianist (Nov. 10) – A dynamic show featuring everything from ragtime to rock, with audience interaction and a few surprises.

CC Teneal’s Divas of Soul (Feb. 17, 2026) – A soul-stirring Motown tribute inspired by icons like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Whitney Houston.

Katie McMahan's Celtic Celebration (March 17, 2026) – Known for her exquisite soaring soprano solo in the original Riverdance single.&nbsp;

Live from Laurel Canyon (April 24, 2026) - An endearing evening of live music and narrated stories of influential songwriters of Laurel Canyon.

Before the new season kicks off, ticket buyers can enjoy two “bonus” concerts as part of the current season: Sail On, a Beach Boys tribute group on May 1, and Alliance Brass, performing music from stage and screen on May 5.

“We always strive for variety—there’s something for everyone,” Johnson said. “That’s our mission. We want to build community through live music.”

In addition to the shows in Hutchinson, members can attend concerts in Great Bend, which books a different selection of performers through the same touring system.

Hutchinson Community Concerts operates as a membership-based nonprofit, supported entirely through community involvement. The group does not sell individual concert tickets; instead, season memberships provide access to all six performances, plus Great Bend shows.

“Our membership numbers help us plan,” Johnson explained. “So this is the time to join.”

The website features bios, videos and sample performances for each group on the calendar. “We want people to feel confident in what they’re signing up for,” Johnson said.

Kindergarten readiness is top of mind this week as Hutchinson Public Schools prepares to host meet and greet events for incoming students and their families.

On Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m., Ferris Graber, Wiley, Morgan and Lincoln-McCandless elementary schools will welcome families for a special kindergarten event. Allen Elementary, a STEM-focused magnet school, will host its meet and greet Thursday during the same time.

The events are designed to introduce children and families to their new schools and staff in a welcoming, low-pressure environment.

“This is really just a fun opportunity to meet the teachers, principals and other families,” said Stacy Goss USD 308 Director of Communications. “You don’t need to bring any paperwork—it’s just a chance to connect.”

All children who turn 5 on or before Aug. 31 are eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall. For younger children, the district offers the Little Hawks program, which serves children from birth through age 5.

Thanks to the Myrna B. Weeks Donor Advised Fund through the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the district will distribute welcome gifts to approximately 265 incoming kindergarteners. Each gift includes basic school supplies, Play-Doh, and a 100-page summer skills workbook focused on letter recognition, coloring, tracing, fine motor skills and more.

“These are all the things that educators and the state of Kansas say students need to be practicing over the summer,” said Goss. “Some students already know these skills, and some don’t—but we’ll meet them where they are.”

Kindergarten readiness continues to be a key focus for the district, as research shows strong early learning experiences set the tone for long-term academic success. Studies have shown a positive correlation between attending preschool and third-grade math and reading scores.

“We’re deeply invested in early childhood education,” Goss added. “When families are also invested, it helps children enter kindergarten emotionally, socially, physically and academically prepared.”

In addition to in-district support, families are encouraged to take advantage of resources like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to young children.

The district also hinted at broader changes in how kindergarten might be introduced next year, reflecting the evolving needs of incoming students.

“We’re exploring what I’d call a ‘course correction’ in how we begin kindergarten,” Dr. Dawn Johnson, USD 308 Superintendent. “Students today come to us differently than they did 20 years ago. It’s about crawling and walking with them before we expect them to run.”

District to hold kindergarten meet and greets 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas State Fair is turning up the volume this September with the return of fan-favorite Hairball, a high-energy 80s tribute band known for their elaborate costumes, pyrotechnics, and rock star impersonations.

Hairball will hit the Nex-Tech Grandstand stage on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m., as part of the fair’s 2025 entertainment lineup. The group previously performed at the fair and drew a strong crowd, a trend Executive Director Brian Schultz expects to continue.

“We had Hairball a couple of years ago, and the energy they bring to the stage is electric,” Schultz said in a Monday morning announcement. “I worked with them for over a decade in North Dakota, and we never saw attendance dip. People love them.”

Formed in Minneapolis, Hairball features two dynamic lead singers who embody iconic rock legends through both voice and costume. During a typical set, audiences might see Gene Simmons of KISS, Prince, or Twisted Sister brought back to life with uncanny accuracy.

“It’s not just music—it’s a full show,” Schultz said. “They don’t just play the part. They are the part. From the hair and outfits to the pyrotechnics and stage presence, it’s like you’re back in the 80s seeing these bands live.”

Tickets go on sale this week, beginning Thursday, April 24 for early access subscribers, and Friday, April 25 for the general public. Hairball returns to Kansas State Fair for rock-packed night of 80s nostalgia

Many conservative-led states rely heavily on dollars from Washington.

Early this month, the U.S. Department of Education issued an ultimatum to K-12 public schools and state education agencies: Certify that you are not engaging in discrimination under the banner of diversity, equity and inclusion, or risk losing federal funding — including billions in support for low-income students.

The backlash was immediate. Some states with Democratic governors refused to comply, arguing that the directive lacks legal basis, fails to clearly define what constitutes “<a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/reminder-of-legal-obligations-undertaken-exchange-receiving-federal-financial-assistance-and-request-certification-under-title-vi-and-sffa-v-harvard-april-3" target="_blank">illegal DEI practices</a>,” and threatens vital equity-based initiatives in their schools.

After lawsuits from the National Education Association teachers union and the American Civil Liberties Union, the Department of Education agreed to delay enforcement until&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aclu.org/cases/national-education-association-et-al-v-us-department-of-education-et-al?document=Agreement" target="_blank">after April 24</a>.

But states across the country, both liberal- and conservative-led, are worried about losing other aid: the pandemic-era money that in some cases they’ve already spent or committed to spending.

The Department of Education has long played a critical role in distributing federal funds to states for K-12 education, including Title I grants to boost staffing in schools with high percentages of low-income students, and emergency relief like that provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conservative-led states — particularly Mississippi, South Dakota and Arkansas — rely the most heavily on these funds to sustain services in high-need districts.

The 15 states with the highest percentage of their K-12 budget coming from federal funding in fiscal year 2022 — the latest year with data available from the National Center for Education Statistics — voted for Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Similarly, 10 of the 15 states receiving the highest amounts of Title I funding in fiscal year 2024 also voted for Trump.

Mississippi and Kentucky have sent letters to the Department of Education expressing concern over halted pandemic aid.

The clash over federal funding comes even as the future of the Department of Education is murky, given President Donald Trump’s pledge to dismantle the department.

In letters to the Department of Education, state officials and superintendents in Illinois, New York and Wisconsin pushed back against the DEI directive.

<a href="https://www.nyssba.org/clientuploads/nyssba_pdf/titlevi-040525.pdf#:~:text=The%20certification%20remains%20in%20effect%2C%20as%20do,judicial%20decision%20or%20change%20the%20terms%20and" target="_blank">New York officials</a>&nbsp;said they would not provide additional certification beyond what the state already has done, asserting that there “are no federal or State laws prohibiting the principles of DEI.” Illinois Superintendent Tony Sanders&nbsp;<a href="https://www.isbe.net/Documents/ISBE-Response-Title-VI-Certification.pdf" target="_blank">wrote that</a>&nbsp;he was concerned that the Department of Education was changing the conditions of federal funding without a formal administrative process. Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly&nbsp;<a href="https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/news/4.9.25_-_DPI_Letter_to_USDE.pdf" target="_blank">questioned the legality of the order</a>.

New York State Department of Education Counsel and Deputy Commissioner Daniel Morton-Bentley noted that the federal department’s current stance on DEI starkly contrasts with its position during Trump’s first term, when then-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos supported such efforts.

<a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/04/10/colorado-trump-dei-order-state-education-board/" target="_blank">Colorado</a>&nbsp;and<a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-04-11/california-defies-trump-education-order-certify-school-districts-eliminate-dei" target="_blank">&nbsp;California</a>&nbsp;also confirmed they would not comply with the Department of Education’s order.

While some states with liberal leaders are gearing up for legal battles and possible revocation of funding, conservative-led states such as Florida have embraced the federal directive as part of a broader push to reshape public education.

In Florida,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/266" target="_blank">anti-DEI laws</a>&nbsp;have been in place dating back to 2023. In fact,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">many&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">school&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">districts&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">and the state education department</a>&nbsp;say they plan to follow the federal department’s directives, noting the similar state laws.

In March, the Department of Education abruptly rescinded previously approved extensions of pandemic-era aid, ending access to funds months ahead of the original March 2026 deadline.

When the Massachusetts governor’s office voiced concern over that decision, the federal department’s reply on social media was blunt: “<a href="https://x.com/i/flow/login?redirect_after_login=%2Fexplore%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1907126614107816273%257Ctwgr%255E13023b2f184f133a77dd7478cf0809d5afc7e4bf%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.k12dive.com%252Fnews%252Fstates-lawmakers-pushback-on-covid-fund-spending-extensions%252F744811%252F" target="_blank">COVID is over.</a>”

Sixteen&nbsp;<a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/state-covid-schools-funding-complaint.pdf" target="_blank">mostly Democratic-led&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/state-covid-schools-funding-complaint.pdf" target="_blank">states</a>&nbsp;and the District of Columbia filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of Education and Secretary Linda McMahon, challenging the abrupt rescission of previously approved extensions for spending COVID-19 education relief funds.

But backlash against abrupt federal cuts to education has not been limited to blue states.

Mississippi’s Department of Education warned the cuts would jeopardize more than $137 million in already obligated funds, slated for literacy initiatives, mental health services and infrastructure repairs. “The impact of this sudden reversal is detrimental to Mississippi students,” state Superintendent Lance Evans wrote in&nbsp;<a href="https://mdek12.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/59/2025/04/MS-ESSER-Letter-04.02.25-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank">a letter</a>&nbsp;to McMahon.

The letter also outlines the state’s repeated — but unsuccessful — efforts to draw down millions in approved funds since February.

Shanderia Minor, a spokesperson for the Mississippi education department, told Stateline the agency is awaiting next steps and direction about the funds and federal directives.

In Kentucky, state Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher&nbsp;<a href="https://kentuckylantern.com/briefs/ky-education-commissioner-sounds-alarm-about-sudden-halt-to-federal-covid-payments-to-schools/" target="_blank">told districts</a>&nbsp;— which stand to lose tens of millions in pandemic aid — that abrupt federal changes leave them “in a difficult position,” with schools already having committed funds to teacher training and facility upgrades.

According to Kentucky Department of Education spokesperson Jennifer Ginn, the state has about $18 million in unspent pandemic aid funds left to distribute to districts. And districts have about $38 million in unspent funds, for a total $56 million that could be lost.

Lauren Farrow, a former Florida public school teacher, told Stateline that schools that receive Title I money are already underfunded — and the federal threat only widens the gap.

“Florida is pouring billions into education — but where is it going? Because we’re not seeing it in schools, especially not in Title I schools,” said Farrow. “I taught five minutes away from a wealthier school, and we didn’t even have pencils. Teachers were buying shoes for students. Why is that still happening?”

Tafshier Cosby, senior director of the Center for Organizing and Partnerships at the National Parents Union, a parents advocacy group, told Stateline that while most families don’t fully understand the various school funding systems, they feel the impact of cuts in the classroom.

Cosby said parents are worried about the loss of support services for students with disabilities, Title I impacts, and how debates about DEI may deflect from more urgent needs like literacy and teacher support.

“We’ve been clear: DEI isn’t the federal government’s role — it’s up to states,” she said. “But the confusion is real. And the impact could be devastating.”

Today, as a consultant working with teachers across Florida’s Orange County Public Schools — one of the largest districts in the country — Farrow says many educators are fearful and confused about how to support their students under changing DEI laws.

“Teachers are asking, ‘Does this mean I can’t seat a student with glasses at the front of the room anymore?’ There’s so much fear around what we’re allowed to do now.”

“There’s no one giving teachers guidance or even basic acknowledgment. We’re just left wondering what we’re allowed to say or do — and that’s dangerous.”

Some states with Democratic governors refused to comply, arguing that the directive lacks legal basis, fails to clearly define what constitutes “<a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/reminder-of-legal-obligations-undertaken-exchange-receiving-federal-financial-assistance-and-request-certification-under-title-vi-and-sffa-v-harvard-april-3" target="_blank">illegal DEI practices</a>,” and threatens vital equity-based initiatives in their schools.After lawsuits from the National Education Association teachers union and the American Civil Liberties Union, the Department of Education agreed to delay enforcement until&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aclu.org/cases/national-education-association-et-al-v-us-department-of-education-et-al?document=Agreement" target="_blank">after April 24</a>.But states across the country, both liberal- and conservative-led, are worried about losing other aid: the pandemic-era money that in some cases they’ve already spent or committed to spending.The Department of Education has long played a critical role in distributing federal funds to states for K-12 education, including Title I grants to boost staffing in schools with high percentages of low-income students, and emergency relief like that provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.Conservative-led states — particularly Mississippi, South Dakota and Arkansas — rely the most heavily on these funds to sustain services in high-need districts.The 15 states with the highest percentage of their K-12 budget coming from federal funding in fiscal year 2022 — the latest year with data available from the National Center for Education Statistics — voted for Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Similarly, 10 of the 15 states receiving the highest amounts of Title I funding in fiscal year 2024 also voted for Trump.Mississippi and Kentucky have sent letters to the Department of Education expressing concern over halted pandemic aid.The clash over federal funding comes even as the future of the Department of Education is murky, given President Donald Trump’s pledge to dismantle the department.<figure>

Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly&nbsp;<a href="https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/news/4.9.25_-_DPI_Letter_to_USDE.pdf" target="_blank">questioned the legality of the order</a>.New York State Department of Education Counsel and Deputy Commissioner Daniel Morton-Bentley noted that the federal department’s current stance on DEI starkly contrasts with its position during Trump’s first term, when then-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos supported such efforts.<a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/04/10/colorado-trump-dei-order-state-education-board/" target="_blank">Colorado</a>&nbsp;and<a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-04-11/california-defies-trump-education-order-certify-school-districts-eliminate-dei" target="_blank">&nbsp;California</a>&nbsp;also confirmed they would not comply with the Department of Education’s order.While some states with liberal leaders are gearing up for legal battles and possible revocation of funding, conservative-led states such as Florida have embraced the federal directive as part of a broader push to reshape public education.In Florida,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/266" target="_blank">anti-DEI laws</a>&nbsp;have been in place dating back to 2023. In fact,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">many&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">school&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">districts&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">and the state education department</a>&nbsp;say they plan to follow the federal department’s directives, noting the similar state laws.<h2>Pandemic aid cancellations</h2>In March, the Department of Education abruptly rescinded previously approved extensions of pandemic-era aid, ending access to funds months ahead of the original March 2026 deadline.When the Massachusetts governor’s office voiced concern over that decision, the federal department’s reply on social media was blunt: “<a href="https://x.com/i/flow/login?redirect_after_login=%2Fexplore%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1907126614107816273%257Ctwgr%255E13023b2f184f133a77dd7478cf0809d5afc7e4bf%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.k12dive.com%252Fnews%252Fstates-lawmakers-pushback-on-covid-fund-spending-extensions%252F744811%252F" target="_blank">COVID is over.</a>”Sixteen&nbsp;<a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/state-covid-schools-funding-complaint.pdf" target="_blank">mostly Democratic-led&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/state-covid-schools-funding-complaint.pdf" target="_blank">states</a>&nbsp;and the District of Columbia filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of Education and Secretary Linda McMahon, challenging the abrupt rescission of previously approved extensions for spending COVID-19 education relief funds.But backlash against abrupt federal cuts to education has not been limited to blue states.Mississippi’s Department of Education warned the cuts would jeopardize more than $137 million in already obligated funds, slated for literacy initiatives, mental health services and infrastructure repairs. “The impact of this sudden reversal is detrimental to Mississippi students,” state Superintendent Lance Evans wrote in&nbsp;<a href="https://mdek12.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/59/2025/04/MS-ESSER-Letter-04.02.25-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank">a letter</a>&nbsp;to McMahon.The letter also outlines the state’s repeated — but unsuccessful — efforts to draw down millions in approved funds since February.Shanderia Minor, a spokesperson for the Mississippi education department, told Stateline the agency is awaiting next steps and direction about the funds and federal directives.In Kentucky, state Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher&nbsp;<a href="https://kentuckylantern.com/briefs/ky-education-commissioner-sounds-alarm-about-sudden-halt-to-federal-covid-payments-to-schools/" target="_blank">told districts</a>&nbsp;— which stand to lose tens of millions in pandemic aid — that abrupt federal changes leave them “in a difficult position,” with schools already having committed funds to teacher training and facility upgrades.According to Kentucky Department of Education spokesperson Jennifer Ginn, the state has about $18 million in unspent pandemic aid funds left to distribute to districts. And districts have about $38 million in unspent funds, for a total $56 million that could be lost.Lauren Farrow, a former Florida public school teacher, told Stateline that schools that receive Title I money are already underfunded — and the federal threat only widens the gap.“Florida is pouring billions into education — but where is it going? Because we’re not seeing it in schools, especially not in Title I schools,” said Farrow. “I taught five minutes away from a wealthier school, and we didn’t even have pencils. Federal education cuts and Trump DEI demands leave states, teachers in limbo

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As orange cones and construction signs begin to dot the highways and byways of Kansas this spring, officials are urging motorists to slow down and stay alert during National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Nick Gosnell, spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) District 5, which covers much of south-central Kansas, emphasized that work zone safety is not just about protecting construction workers — it's about saving drivers’ lives.

“In 2024, Kansas saw eight people killed and more than 500 injured in work zone crashes,” Gosnell said during a recent interview. “And around 90% of those injured were motorists, not workers.”

According to state data, Kansas averaged 4.6 work zone crashes per day in 2024, totaling more than 1,700 incidents. While about three-quarters of those were limited to property damage, Gosnell said any crash has the potential to seriously impact lives.

“It’s a rite of spring in Kansas — you change your clocks, and the orange barrels show up,” Gosnell said. “The point is to remind drivers that if they see those signs or cones, it’s time to take an extra few seconds, look ahead, and be prepared.”

Among the major projects in Gosnell’s district is the “Gold Project,” which aims to overhaul the interchange of K-96, I-135 and I-235 near Wichita. Once complete, the redesign will resemble the seamless transitions found in suburban Kansas City.

“It's on schedule, though the spring rains are a double-edged sword — good for crops, not so much for construction,” Gosnell said.

Other work includes resurfacing U.S. 50 west of Hutchinson and bridge improvements near the Reno and Harvey County line.

For drivers wanting real-time updates, Gosnell recommends the KanDrive app or visiting <a href="http://www.kandrive.gov">www.kandrive.gov</a>, which provides current road conditions and construction alerts across Kansas.

In addition to following posted speed limits — which often come with doubled fines in work zones — Gosnell stressed the importance of giving workers space.

“They’re working just feet from you — closer than you and I sitting across a table,” he said.

Drivers may also encounter pilot cars guiding them through single-lane areas. According to Gosnell, KDOT aims to keep wait times to 15 minutes or less during such operations.

Gosnell also highlighted updates to Kansas’ Move Over Law, which now requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for any vehicle stopped on the roadside, not just emergency responders.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a tow truck, law enforcement, or just a motorist changing a flat — if someone’s on the side of the road, you need to give them room,” he said.

Western Kansans often voice frustration about long detour routes, but Gosnell explained that those decisions are based on bridge capacity and safety standards for heavy truck traffic.

“The only bridges we can guarantee will handle that load are those on state highways,” he said. “We’re not trying to inconvenience anyone — we want everyone, including our workers, to get home safely.”

As construction season ramps up, Gosnell and other KDOT officials hope National Work Zone Awareness Week serves as a reminder that everyone plays a role in road safety.

“No text, no phone call, no shortcut is worth someone’s life,” he said.

As part of Kansas' safety campaign, stories from five highway workers who have shared their experiences in year's past will be highlighted here again. These stories highlight what highway workers potentially face every day -&nbsp;close calls or actually being hit while in work zones.&nbsp;

In addition, one story from Shirley McDonald will be featured in the series. Shirley's son, KDOT employee Scotty McDonald, was killed in a work zone crash in 2005. She has spent a lot of time the last 20 years writing blogs, speaking at events and talking to the media on why work zone safety is so important. She knows. Even after 20 years, the loss and grief haven't gone away.&nbsp;

Please remember - these folks have families too, and they want to go home safely every night. Take that extra minute to slow down, ditch all distractions and pay attention.&nbsp;
