HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Manager Kendal Francis is a little frustrated by the pace of the process when it comes to hiring department heads for the city's vacancies.

"It's going way too slowly," Francis said. "We are moving forward. The Community Development Director position, we have done some initial interviews. We have some in person interviews scheduled for next week. You asked about internal promotion. That's a possibility, there have been some internal candidates, so we're looking at that."

In addition to the Community Development Director, there is still a Director of Engineering position, in addition to the Police Chief vacancy. Also,&nbsp;Director of Public Information &amp; Community Engagement Rebekah Starkey-Keasling is moving on from the city next month. The one where Francis expected the most help, because they are using an outside consulting firm, is with the Police Chief search.

"That one maybe is what my biggest frustration is," Francis said. "Actually, before I arrived this morning, I emailed the consultant to see when I should be expecting that. Actually, I was expecting that last week and I hadn't seen it. I am, admittedly, frustrated with that process. It will be coming out almost immediately. I feel confident in that."

City manager: Finding good help is a challenge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bretz Injury Law presents the 2nd Annual Cruise for the Cure Poker Run to benefit the Cancer Council of Reno County.

"Having that kind of support system is really important to some of these people," said Stephen Brubaker with the firm. "It's awesome to see the amount of people come out from the community to support this cause."

The run is Saturday, April 22nd, starting at Salty Cycles at 129 East Sherman in Hutchinson. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. Entry is $25/hand and $10 for each additional hand. Door prizes and FREE lunch will be provided at Bretz Injury Law after the run. Raffles will also be available to enter.

"We were able to give them over $1000 last year," said Casey Ensz with the firm. "We're obviously hoping to increase that this year, as many people come out and donate. The more people who come, the more we get to give to the Cancer Council."

Special thanks to Salty Cycles, Ray Ray's Cycle, Dan's Cycle, and Shep Chevrolet for their support. Those four locations, along with Bretz are the places where riders will receive their cards.

"You will draw a card at the beginning," Brubaker said. "At each stop, you will draw a card and we have these fancy little poker chips that have a different card on each one of them. At the end, we score up all the hands. You draw five cards, you get a hand and whoever has the best hand wins. We also do a prize for the worst hand. You don't really have to know anything about playing poker to be in a poker run."

25% of the proceeds from the run go to the best hand,&nbsp; 15% to the second best and 10% to the worst hand. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

Cruise for the Cure Poker Run Saturday

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission read through potential text amendments to the county's Zoning Regulations regarding commercial solar development at its meeting April 20.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/f640402b-da32-48a0-8f5f-424bbb343846">The planning commission was given time to work by Reno County Commissioners, as they put a moratorium on such development in place for the rest of 2023 at their meeting on April 11.</a>

No public comment on the regulations was taken at the April 20 meeting, as it took them more than two hours just to read through and discuss the first draft provided by staff and make some initial edits. &nbsp;

County planner Mark Vonachen told the board that the decisions they need to make before further editing of the document are on what they choose to regulate and what they choose not to regulate. The goal is to make regulations that are able to be applied whether the proposed project is seven acres or 7000 acres.

The commission will work on other planning cases in May to give staff time to deal with the changes they were able to make on Thursday, so it will be at least June before the commission revisits the topic.

Reno County Planning Commission does initial work on solar regs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Julia Westfahl with SCKEDD provided the Housing Commission and Hutch Post with information regarding the SCKEDD Housing Resurgence Program.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 

SCKEDD has already closed on the first home in that program and work has already begun on the yard clean. On April 11, SCKEDD hosted a bid tour attracting 17 local contractors.&nbsp;&nbsp; Bids will be due April 25 and awards will be issued no later than May 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SCKEDD is under contract on another home that will close in June/July.&nbsp;&nbsp; The second home will hit several areas of the expressed interest of neighborhood “creep” and main traffic areas.&nbsp;

Westfahl also gave an update on SCKEDD's partnership with Interfaith Housing Community Services on ARPA funding. SCKEDD has completed 11 inspections on owner occupied homes. Bid tours were facilitated on April 11 of four homes, attracting 17 contractors. Bids on those projects are due April 25, Contracts will be issued no later than May 1. Three of those four homes will receive weatherization services as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Bid tours were facilitated on April 18th&nbsp;of five additional homes, attracting 12 contractors. Bids on those projects are due May 2, Contract will be issued no later than May 8. Three of those five homes will receive weatherization services as well.

SCKEDD work going forward

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson Police Department introduced their RETRO PD unit on social media this week. 

If you see it out and about, yes it is an actual patrol unit. 

The department tried to replicate the Crown Vics that the agency used to use in the mid 2000s. 

 The difference is this is a slick top and the older vehicles had the bulky light bar on top and they were silver.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The department presented to the City Council on purchasing two new police vehicles to replace ones that were not pursuit rated at the council meeting last week.

Retro PD Unit in South Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department on Thursday offered "The Art of Reading Smoke", a class from Thornton, Colorado Battalion Chief Rob Backer. Over 120 firefighters from across the state of Kansas attended the one day only class offering on April 20th.

Backer is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and has written for Fire Engineering and fire service blogs, and has been delivering The Art of Reading Smoke and The Art of the First Due nationally.

Today’s structure fires are more dangerous than ever before.  Lightweight construction, low-mass synthetics, and open space floorplans have created a perfect storm for rapid, prolific fire growth and extreme behavior.  It is imperative for firefighters of all ranks and experience levels to be prepared for this new battle.  

The Art of Reading Smoke, developed by Dave Dodson and continued by Rob Backer, provides the knowledge necessary for first-arriving firefighters, officers, and chief officers to determine the fire’s location and progression “from the seat” before seeing any flame.  

Through the extensive use of actual fireground videos, first-time students are able to develop, and returning students refine their knowledge and skills to become intellectually aggressive firefighters, rather than arbitrarily aggressive.

The class took place at the Hutchinson Fire Training Center at 3201 East 4th.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Prairie Hills Middle School in USD 313 is bringing out the entrepreneur in its students with their second annual Spring Market on Sunday, April 23. &nbsp;

“Basically, it's just an opportunity for our middle school students to experience just being an entrepreneur,” Abby Thompson, Prairie Hills Middle School principal, said. “They are able to sign up at the school, have their own booth, run their own little small business, and sell handmade or homemade items.”&nbsp;

Goods that students will be selling include jewelry, arts and crafts, drawings, baked goods, bath and body products, and even services. &nbsp;

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. the public will be able to interact with the vendors at Prairie Hills Middle School. &nbsp;

The Spring Market’s inaugural year saw 50 students in 6th through 8th grade participate.&nbsp;

“It came to us last year, initially as an idea from our PTO, and so we kind of started there,” Thompson said. “At&nbsp;that time, our PTO president, her husband was a business owner, so he came in and we had a couple of meetings with the kids about how to market things, and profit margins, and those types of concepts for kids.”&nbsp;

Thompson said over 70 kids will be participating this year.&nbsp;

Students have been preparing for the Spring Market for about eight weeks. They have received guidance in using proper communication, how to price their items, how to set up their booths, and how they plan on interacting with their customers. &nbsp;

In its second year, the Spring Market is treated as a learning experience from those who participated last year to those taking part this year, especially new 6th graders.&nbsp;

“It's just an opportunity for our kids to experience running their own little business,” Thompson said. “We're hoping next year to be able to maybe attach it within potentially our FACS class or just through our Champion Time, which is a&nbsp;class that all of our kids have at the end of the day.”&nbsp;

For their buy-in to participate in the Spring Market, students pay $5, which then cycles back into the Spring Market. &nbsp;

Extra help for a booth in one form or another is afforded to students who may need it, if it is necessary for them to participate.&nbsp;

While students do get to keep the money made by their booths, Thompson did say there were a few students last year that donated their profit back to the Prairie Hills Middle School.&nbsp;

Through the Spring Market, Thompson hopes Prairie Hills Middle School students learn the values of dedication and hard work, as well as creativity. The Spring Market offers students a chance to showcase their talents. &nbsp;

 “We've had kids come up with some ideas and things to sell that you're just like, wow, you know, like a spin on something that's just pretty standard,” Thompson said. “That creativity piece, I think is cool too, because it hits with with a lot of kids, that maybe sports and that type of stuff isn't their thing.”&nbsp;

Education is not lost in the Spring Market. Thompson does see a reflection of the school curriculum in the Spring Market. As an example, the language arts program is reflected in how students speak and listen to their customers. &nbsp;

In the case of those making baked goods or treats, they are using math to manage their recipes. Money management also falls under math skills. &nbsp;

Even science plays a part in how some students have approached their products.&nbsp; One student that made pet soaps last year, is adding to their product this year by adding flea and tick resistance. &nbsp;

“They've learned how to concoct those types of things,” Thompson said. “I think it [the Spring Market] just shows how well-rounded we are as a school in our curriculum. Even our arts is strong here in the Buhler district.”&nbsp;

The Spring Market will take place at Prairie Hills Middle School at 3200 Lucille Drive on April 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Zoo announces summer camps

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two public sector hiring events are taking place Thursday. The Reno County Hiring Event is from&nbsp;10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 20th, at the Reno County Courthouse, 206 W. 1st Ave. 

If you bring a resume or cover letter to the event, they will take care of inputting your data. If you do not have a cover letter or resume, someone will be there to help you fill out your information. Some departments will be conducting on the spot interviews. Also, some pre-employment screening will be available.&nbsp;

The City of Hutchinson is also holding a career fair on Thursday, April 20.

Reno County, City of Hutchinson each hosting hiring events

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said that there are some new programs getting ready to start later this year. One of those is a sports performance training program.

"It's a new program that we're offering," Foster said. "It's dedicated, really for younger athletes. It just helps them improve their speed, agility and if they are interested in a specific sport, we can tailor it directly to whatever sport that they are interested in, but most sports it covers with just the speed and agility training, working with reflexes and things of that nature."

This is usually for those from 7 or 8 years old all the way through high school.&nbsp;

"People can sign up now," Foster said. "We're definitely kind of gearing that towards summer with a lot of our other programs and offerings that we have coming up in the summertime."

The Y also plans to start martial arts classes later this year.

"We have an instructor that teaches at a couple of our other branches in the association," Foster said. "He'll be coming out to Hutch to teach those classes. Those will start June 2. Registration for those will start in May."

Hutch Y starting new programs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Women’s Show hosted by the Hutchinson chapter of Soroptimist International is back this Saturday, April 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Meadowlark Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

"2002 was the first one," said Joan Brown with the show. "We did miss two years because of COVID. This is actually the 20th one. Every year we have some new booths and we have some old, kind of like the State Fair. There's something old, there's something new. This year, we have about 45 new booths."

Visitors can browse offerings in clothing, makeup, home decor, and more. Admission is $2 in advance, $4 at the door, with advance tickets available at Don’s Custom Floral, Kansas State Fair Office, YMCA of Hutchinson, and The Alley, along with the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

"We give awards to two high school girls that are involved in volunteer service," Brown said. "We also have an emergency fund that helps the women in this community."

A free family health fair also runs the morning of&nbsp; April 22, from 8:00 a.m. to noon in the Sunflower South Building. The health fair is co-sponsored by the Hutchinson Chapter of Soroptimist International and PrairieStar Health Center. The fair includes screenings for breast cancer, dental cancer, blood pressure, BMI, a biometric screening, a lipid panel, stroke education, eyeglass cleaning and adjustment, balance screening, sleep apnea screening, depression and anxiety screening and screening for COPD, along with blood glucose screening. If you want your blood glucose tested, you will need to come to the fair before you have eaten that morning.

"We are going to have the concession stand open in the Sunflower South building," Brown said. "In the past we haven't had that open, but it will be this year so that after they have done their blood tests, they can have some breakfast."

Admission to the women's show is free for children 12 and under with an accompanying adult.

The fair includes screenings for breast cancer, dental cancer, blood pressure, BMI, a biometric screening, a lipid panel, stroke education, eyeglass cleaning and adjustment, balance screening, sleep apnea screening, depression and anxiety screening and screening for COPD, along with blood glucose screening. If you want your blood glucose tested, you will need to come to the fair before you have eaten that morning."We are going to have the concession stand open in the Sunflower South building," Brown said. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the intersection of First Avenue and North Main Street at The Wiley Plaza. 

On Thursday, July 11, 1929, Lyons had 11 inches of rain. All that deluge collected into the Cow Creek Watershed and headed southeast. 

On Friday, July 12, 1929, The Hutch News headline was "Hutchinson Will Be Flooded," telling all the citizens a great wall of water would sweep in from the north. 

Ben Lee, the city engineer, took an airplane ride toward Lyons to look for himself. The wall of water was three miles wide and four-feet deep. He predicted the water would begin pouring into Hutchinson about 8 p.m.

 The dike gates were raised, but were overwhelmed. Saturday, July 13, downtown water levels ranged from one-to-four feet. Train service was entirely cut off because of washed-out tracks. The News basement was submerged, where the presses were. 

Wichita had to print the local paper. The next four photos are among the thousands taken. These are specifically from 1st &amp; Main. 

The first is from the top of the Wiley building looking west toward the Soldier &amp; Sailor monument.

 The second is of two fellows out in 1st street, showing the velocity of the water. 

The third is of the intersection, showing the American National Bank in the background. 

The fourth shows cars of the era in front of the Wiley building. The photo once again shows the water speed. 

This was Hutchinson's greatest natural disaster. It caused more than $1 million in damage — in 1929 dollars!

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former Eagle Radio Sports Director Rusty Hilst updated those supporting him in his battle with ALS of his medical condition via Facebook post on Wednesday.

According to the Rally for Rusty GoFundMe page, over $105,000 has been raised to help with ALS related expenses. The original goal was $125,000.

Hilst continuing to stay positive

MCPHERSON, Kan. — For Matthew and Gunnar Nelson it is still meaningful even after a quarter of a century to bring their dad Ricky Nelson's music to life. Ricky Nelson Remembered plays the McPherson Opera House Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m.

"We thought our dad really deserved his own night," Gunnar Nelson said. "He sold half a billion singles in his career and had a bunch of number ones on his own. We put together a show that, originally, we were going to do a one off show in Yokosuka, Japan, for the naval base there for the commandant. It was for all the sailors who couldn't get back for Thanksgiving. We were only going to do that one show, but the response was so good, we decided to continue to do the show, just as long as people were coming to it and were interested. Here we are 25 years later, still doing that show. It's just improving every single time."

The twins perform their dad’s greatest hits (including “Poor Little Fool,” “Hello Mary Lou”, “Travelin’ Man”) alongside their own music, depending on the reaction of that night's crowd.

"They're such great iconic songs that were the fabric of America," Nelson said. "Songs for everybody, they are little time machines. They put you in this place and time. Hopefully, it was a good place and time in your life, but instantly, you are there. It's amazing. I liken music to as close to magic as you have on the planet. This particular show, what's great about this, it really unites multiple generations."

Ricky Nelson Remembered has played McPherson before and Gunnar Nelson loves the Opera House.

"To me, it's wonderful," Nelson said. "It hits me on two different levels. One, it feels like the world's biggest living room, which is great for performing and two, all that history is there, too, which is just an added bonus."

KINGMAN COUNTY — A California man has been sentenced to serve more than 20 years for his conviction of attempted second-degree murder, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said today. Robert John Escarcega, a transient from California, was sentenced by Kingman County District Court Judge Francis R. Meisenheimer to serve 247 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility. He was also sentenced to register as a violent offender for 15 years. Escarcega was found guilty by a jury on February 7, 2023. The crime took place on October 2, 2021, during a domestic incident in rural Kingman County. The case was investigated by the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office, Kingman Police Department, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Wichita Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Nicole Southall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

California man sentenced for Kingman County attempted murder

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The case for Andrew D. Patterson, 25, Hutchinson, has been continued to May 3.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/3425b749-e395-46f5-9bfd-539d9c683275" target="_blank">Patterson was charged with attempted terrorism in June</a>, following threats he made against his workplace and a school.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If convicted, he could get up to 50 years in prison without parole.&nbsp;

A previous complaint filed in the case alleged a threat against Hutchinson Middle School-8 (HMS-8), and a separate threat against the Dillons distribution center.&nbsp;

Additionally, Patterson allegedly made a further threat against a specific individual.&nbsp;

The terrorism charge is founded in the HMS-8 threat.&nbsp;
