RENO COUNTY — Reno County Fire Districts were kept busy Sunday afternoon and evening. 

Reno County Fire District # 9 was dispatched to a brush fire on South Worthington Road.  With the extreme fire conditions, Reno Kingman Joint Fire District # 1 and Reno County Fire District # 8 were also attached to that call.  A total of 12 suppression units, 1 command and 2 support units answered the call. Less than an acre of grass, soybean debris and trees burned. The cause of the fire was noted as undetermined.

Sunday evening, Reno County Fire District # 4 was dispatched to a brush fire on South Sterling Road. Initial units dispatched were from Reno County Fire District # 4, Reno County Fire District # 6 and Reno County Fire District # 7.   The area was heavily wooded and had structures threatened.   Additional districts were also dispatched.  Those included Reno County Fire District # 8 and Reno Kingman Joint Fire District # 1. 

  Seventeen suppression units and four support units assisted in that incident.  Minor structure damage was reported to a building.  Other losses and a cause are not known at this time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno County EM gives rundown of rural fires

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager said they had quite a few people come in and vote in advance already for the Nov. 8 election.

"The first day we had 302 people come in and vote," Fager said Monday morning. "We are up to 581 currently. The first day was really good, the second day, it dropped off a little bit. It's pretty steady."

You shouldn't have to wait too long, if you go in to vote at the Reno County Annex, but it is a lengthy ballot with statewide races and constitutional questions in addition to the county commission races.

"They do have an increased time in the booths, we've noticed that," Fager said. "We do have extra booths set up here. That way, we haven't ran out, at this point."

Advance voting can be done at the County Annex at 125 W. 1st Avenue from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of Wednesdays where the annex will stay open until 7 p.m. 

The annex will also be open Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Fager: Good start to advance voting in Reno County

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt on Monday unveiled the annual Overview of the Health Insurance Market in Kansas. 

This annual report details the 2023 Kansas Health Insurance Market (Marketplace) options. Several of the enhancements Kansans can expect to see in the 2023 Marketplace include:

• Addition of a new health insurance company – The number of health insurance companies doing business on the Marketplace will increase from seven to eight.

• Addition of five new individual health insurance plan options on the Marketplace – The total available individual and family health insurance plans will increase from 123 to 128.

• Addition of three new dental insurance plans - This addition will increase the total number of the state’s individual and family dental policies available to 19.

“More options will be available on the 2023 Marketplace for Kansans to choose from,” said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “The additional health plans will help many Kansans find a plan that best fits their needs.”

The open enrollment period for Kansans will be from November 1 until January 15. Kansans who would like to start their health insurance coverage effective January 1 must enroll by December 15. Health insurance purchased on the Marketplace between December 16 and January 15 will not begin coverage until February 1.

Kansas Insurance Marketplace will have more 2023 options

I recently had to fire up the furnace for the first time this season. As painful as it was to switch the thermostat from the off position to heat, Mother Nature forced my hand with a hard freeze about two weeks early. In my mind there’s nothing better than waking up in a chilly house. On the flip side, there’s nothing worse than being awoken by a freezing house. The acorns falling on my roof for the past few weeks were one of the first signals this day was coming. Despite the drought, the oak tree north of my house has had a productive year. We’ve endured what can best be described as an intermittent hailstorm since late August. The seeds land with a thud before rolling into the gutter. Some of the larger acorns get a significant enough bounce off the hipped roof to make it to the patio, which adds an extra bit of excitement to each step once the little ovals are covered by leaves. The leaves and acorns will require some extra work over the coming weeks to remove. Like switching on the heat, raking leaves, disconnecting hoses and cleaning gutters are just some of the season’s many routines. In a couple of weeks my wife and I will participate in what’s become another fall tradition, voting early. Like any good idiosyncratic custom, this habit developed accidentally rather than on purpose. We’ll go out to breakfast on the Saturday before Election Day. On our way home we’ll stop by the county annex building to cast our ballots. I don’t remember exactly how this particular routine got started, but it ranks high on the list for why fall is my favorite season. Even if I’m not fully satisfied with the slate of candidates, I get to talk over the choices with my wife at our favorite breakfast place. Of course, voting early does involve a little risk. There’s always the chance of late-breaking news happening in the hours between Saturday morning and Tuesday evening that would change my vote in a particular race. I think the odds of that happening are up there with delaying my vote, getting busy on the second Tuesday of November and not voting, only to see a race end in a tie all because I didn’t cast my ballot. Both are plausible if highly unlikely scenarios. After voting, we’ll likely spend the rest of the day working outside, picking up acorns that have bounced off the roof and raking leaves into giant piles. At least one of us will probably try to watch a little football and possibly sneak in an afternoon nap. In some ways, elections are the easiest way we control our own governance. The hard work comes later, when you have to ensure winning candidates stick to their campaign promises if you voted for them. Tougher still is convincing someone you didn’t vote for to reconsider their position. That work will come in a different season. Whether you’re starting a tradition or sticking to an old routine, fall is voting season. I encourage you to make the most of it and cast your ballot anytime between now and Nov. 8.

Insight: Routines of Fall

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A discussion of water issues and utility rates will be taken up by the South Hutchinson City Council when they meet tonight.

An ordinance to clarify that all water users of South Hutchinson city water should pay a base rate in addition to their monthly usage charge was passed back in September.

There will also be an executive session to discuss non-elected personnel.

The South Hutchinson City Council meets at 6 p.m. at the city offices at 2 South Main.

South Hutch City Council meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The earnings calls for local employers in Reno County continue Tuesday with ADM. Their 3Q call is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. Eastern.

In 2Q, ADM had an adjusted earnings per share of $2.15 and anticipated acceleration of approximately $1 billion in share repurchases into the back half of the year.

ADM operates five elevators in the Hutchinson area, employing around 65 workers.

ADM 3Q results to be announced Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Even if you missed the filing deadline for taxes this year, as long as you are due a refund, there is no penalty, and you can even still file for free, if you fit the income guidelines.

"All of the penalties that the IRS talks about are all on an unpaid balance," said Michael Devine with the IRS. "If you filed your tax return and didn't pay what you owed, then penalties and interest are going to be compounding on that. But, if you're due a refund, there's no penalty for you not filing your tax return, but there is a three year statute of limitations in order to file the return and get your money back."

There is a lot of free tax credit money that hasn't been distributed to those who qualify for it, because they have not filed their taxes at all.

"That is critically important to people who may not have filed for the past couple of years," Devine said. "We're talking about 2019 and 2020. There were a lot of credits that were increased because of COVID. The only way to get those is to file the tax return. We're talking about the Child Tax Credit, which could be $3600, the Recovery Rebate Credit, which would be $1400 per adult and child, the Earned Income Tax Credit, if you have three children, almost $7000. If you didn't file, because you're not required to, this is the time to go ahead and get that done."

The IRS is actually sending out reminder letters to those who might qualify.

"We are sending out letters to about 9 million households," Devine said. "These are people that are normally not required to file a return, because they don't make enough money to have to file, but they may be eligible to claim those credits and thousands of dollars in refunds. If you do it yourself, you can go and get the tax form on <a href="https://www.irs.gov/">IRS.gov</a>. Or, for 2019 and 2020, you can go to a registered tax professional and they can file it electronically."

IRS: Several million people with credits unclaimed for COVID years

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With new lower unemployment numbers out Friday, Debra Teufel with the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce notes that businesses are still looking to grow, but they have to find talent.

"It really is an employee's market right now," Teufel said. "There are many jobs to be had. We have companies that are continuing to grow. That indicator is something that we look at to see, are we at what we would call, basically, full employment? When you get down to the twos and threes, you really are, basically almost full employment. It's an employee market. People have choices and they are going to go to the place where they can get the best bang for their buck in their talents and skill sets."

A big part of keeping the economy strong is letting people who are growing up here know that they don't have to leave, no matter what it is they love to do.

"We're doing everything that we can to help young people see that there are careers here in the community, through the Career Quest program, we've really been making young people aware of great jobs," Teufel said. "That's going to be a long term change. Changing that mindset, I feel like, is so important, as a community."

The Chamber started with two sixth grade classes at Wiley and McCandless Elementary for the Career Quest program this past school year.

Eagle Media and Rise Up Reno's Pumpkinaries returns Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Hutch Rec is partnering with Kansas CPR in a specialized class for youth babysitters. The class is designed for those ages 10 to 18. The registration deadline is coming up Nov. 2 and the classes start Nov. 5

The two-hour, hands-on class provides information and training youth need to become successful, responsible, and prepared babysitters.

The instructor will focus on CPR for infants, children, and adults, as well as AED and basic First Aid skills. 

Students will receive a certificate upon completion. Snacks and prizes are provided.

There are four sessions available to choose from in November.

Session 1: November 5 from 8-10 a.m. (Registration Deadline: November 2)

Session 2: November 5 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (Registration Deadline: November 2)

Session 3: Monday, November 7 from 4-6 p.m. (Registration Deadline: November 3)

Just a few more days to register for youth babysitting class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the new Director of Marketing and Communications for Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, Brittney Weis, one of her goals is to get the community to look again at Hutchinson Regional as living up to its name not just for Hutchinson, but for the region as a whole.

"Our staff are incredible individuals that truly care about Hutchinson," Weis said. "They come to work every day committed and ready to make a difference in the lives of our community. Every day when I show up and just walk the halls and hear about mission moments and the great care that we're providing, it really energizes me and makes me excited to help spread the word of the great work we're doing."

The focus for the system is to be the first place people think of when they need health care, not just for emergencies, but for the care needs everyone has to maintain their daily lives.

"My number one job is storytelling," Weis said. "It's working with our providers and our patients. With HIPPA privacy laws, we do have to be really careful, but there are so many patients that are willing and happy to share their story. It's just working with our teams to help identify, who are those individuals and then giving them the opportunity to sit down and tell their story."

Another part of that story is becoming the hospital that people come to from all over the western half of Kansas.

"I am really passionate about social determinants of health and rural health care," Weis said. "That's what interested me when I saw the opportunity at Hutch Regional. About one in five Americans receive care at a rural health care center. Over 45 million people in the United States live in a rural community. Making sure that rural hospitals remain standing is something that I am very passionate about, really providing care to those that, if there wasn't a hospital in Hutch, they might have to drive to Wichita or Salina."

Weis was named an honoree in the Wichita Business Journals’ 2022 Marketing Awards. She's been in Hutchinson for a little over a month.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson fire crews had to close 56th Street Sunday afternoon as they were working a structure fire in the 3300 block of East 56th.

According to a release from the department, they were called just before 4:30 p.m. Heavy fire was showing outside the home and brush was burning.

At the time of the call, winds were sustained at 44 miles per hour, gusting to 55. The outside fire was knocked down quickly, but fire has spread to the inside of the structure.

The fire was contained to an acre due to a joint response on catastrophic fire index days between the Buhler and Hutchinson Fire departments. Damage to the structure was significant.&nbsp;

56th was closed between K61 and Old K61 for several hours while they finished cleanup.

Firefighters dealing with windy Sunday

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for extreme grassland fire danger, which is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT Sunday.&nbsp;

Extreme Grassland Fire Danger is forecast.

* Winds will be from the south from 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

* Relative Humidity will be as low as 21 percent.

* Impacts...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly  and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not  recommended.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Faris Elementary Principal James Moffett, getting kids, especially those who may have had trauma at home or elsewhere in their lives, to do what they need to in order to succeed is different than it was when he was in school.

"In the schools that I went to, everything was very fear and compliance-based," Moffett said. "We did things, we comply with our teachers, our principals, because we fear them. We're trying to make a shift from fear and compliance to love and compassion. Just getting kids to a point where they are doing the things that we're asking them to do because they know that we love them and we would never ask them to do anything that would harm them."

The thought is that students are people, too, and they deserve to be acknowledged, even as you ask them to do the right thing.

"Really, it's just about treating people the way that you want to be treated," Moffett said. "That's the Golden Rule that you learned as a kid. Just practices that are based in empathy, based in love, based in compassion. That's where we're really focusing on. That's the highlight of what we do every single day at Faris. I know lots of schools in USD 308 take a similar approach. I'm excited to be part of that."

A big key is the world seems to be moving faster for each generation, but children need to know people care and will spend time with and for them.

"Parents are just busier," Moffett said. "They are working two jobs, sometimes three jobs. They have a lot going on. It's not that they love their kids any less, they are just not always there to invest the amount of time that we have previously. There's just different demands on their time. I don't know that kids have truly changed that much, I just think their interactions have become less and less. It's just about putting an emphasis on just quality time and care and concern in the way that we treat kids."

Moffett is an expert on trauma-informed practices and speaks across the country on how to communicate openly and effectively with kids and parents.

Faris Elementary principal out to #lovekids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County fell for the month of September.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county fell sixth tenths of one percent to 2.6%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2021 was 2.7 %.

There were 763 county residents out of work.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show statewide a&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/Uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Sep2022%20SA%20Rate%20Chart%20File.pdf">seasonally adjusted unemployment rate</a>&nbsp;of 2.6% in September. This was an increase from 2.5% in August and a decrease from 3.0% in September 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno County unemployment back below 3%

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said that when it comes to what the Federal Reserve says it is going to do next month, believe them.

"They're going to raise rates," Goss said. "That's an economic headwind. We're going to see unemployment rates rise, instead of coming down. We're going to see employment growth coming down, instead of increasing. We're going to see the economy slow down. It's a stagflation for sure. That's higher inflation at a time that the economy is either not growing or in a recession."

Goss remains skeptical that the economic brakes being applied can result in a soft landing for the U.S.

"Here's the scary part, the Federal Reserve, normally, they get it wrong most times," Goss said. "They go too far almost every time. When we get into an inflationary territory, they attempt to bring us in for a soft landing by raising rates. They generally go too far and it's not a soft landing. It's a bumpy landing."

Nonetheless, Goss is not sure that the news will be all bad after the bumps.

"I think it's not going to be quite as grim as most economists," Goss said. "Almost 100% of economists are saying recession next year. I think we could avoid a recession, but it's going to be slow to no growth."

Goss issues two surveys monthly of the Midwest region, including Kansas.

Fire crews busy on Saturday, preparing for windy Sunday

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Any team would have been content with a 27-7 halftime lead at Garden City — not the No. 1 Dragons.&nbsp;

Garden City (receiving votes in the Top 15 poll) entered the game 3-4 overall, but 3-1 in conference play. The Broncbusters first three losses of the season came when head coach Tom Minnick could not physically coach his team because of health issues. Upon his return, Garden City rolled to three straight wins before dropping a three-point decision against then-No. 9 Snow.

Garden City's four losses all came to nationally-ranked teams (Butler, Iowa Central, Iowa Western and Snow).

Hutchinson Community College (7-0, 4-0) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after taking just eight plays to cover 72 yards in 4 minutes and 15 seconds.&nbsp;

Dylan Laible finished the drive by finding Marcello Bussey for a 17-yard score. The TD pass was one of three for Laible on the day. For the second-straight game, his day ended early.&nbsp;

Laible racked up three touchdown passes for 198 yards on 15 of 26 throwing. Colin Shields entered with 1:39 left in the third quarter to finish Dragon quarterback duties.&nbsp;

The Dragons put up 27 unanswered points before one mistake led to another late in the first half.&nbsp;

Hutchinson jumped offside on a 4th-and-4 punt in the closing moments of the second quarter. On the next play, quarterback Gabe Friend hit wide receiver Martiel Singleton for a 70-yard scamper. Singleton was forced out at the two, but the Broncbusters would score two plays later on a Travis Dixon one-yard burst.&nbsp;

Coach Drew Dallas said those plays cost his team some momentum headed into the locker room.&nbsp;

"(I'm) proud of how they came out in the second half," Dallas said. "Especially (knowing) how they ended that first half. They played great the second half."

Hutchinson scored the game's first 27 points, then went on a 38-point run to close the game.&nbsp;

The first 27 points came from Bussey, Laible, Malik Benson and kicker Cole Segraves.&nbsp;

Laible sneaked in from one-yard away in the first quarter for only his second rushing touchdown in his career.&nbsp;

Segraves hit two field goals (21 and 32) before Benson took a 40-yard reception to pay dirt.&nbsp;

The second-half run came compliments of some defensive points and interceptions.&nbsp;

Hutchinson picked off Garden City five times (three different quarterbacks), two of those interceptions were house calls.&nbsp;

The five interceptions and two pick-sixes tied team records for one game.&nbsp;

Jalik Thomas was the first Dragon defender on the board when his second INT went 38 yards to the end zone.&nbsp;

Not to be outdone, Ja'Maric Morris took his second interception of the day 75 yards to the house.&nbsp;

Hutchinson pushed Garden City back in the run game. The Broncbusters finished with negative three yards on the ground.&nbsp;

"Allowing negative yards rushing is something special," Dallas said.&nbsp;

The 70-yard reception Hutchinson gave up just before the half accounted for all but 20 of Garden City's first-half yards.&nbsp;

In all, the Broncbusters managed 176 yards on 68 plays (2.6 yards per play). Garden City converted just two times on 14 third-down tries.&nbsp;

Despite the success, Dallas knows his team can improve.

"We'll find something to critique, obviously to get better," Dallas said. He pointed out silly pre-snap penalties and settling for Red Zone field goals as starting points.&nbsp;

Echols scored his first two touchdowns of the season in the second half. His first TD came in the third quarter on a 29-yard Laible pass. His second came from Shields in the fourth quarter after his defender fell down. Echols turned the corner and ran the sideline for 64 yards.&nbsp;

Kedzior used a 36-yard run in the third quarter to run his average yards per carry up to 9.2. He finished the day at 8.6 ypc on 17 touches (146 yards).

Cole Segraves was the Special Teams Player of the Week in the KJCCC after his 4-for-4 performance in Dodge City two weeks ago. Segraves continued to be accurate by hitting three of his four attempts (Made: 21, 32 and 38. Missed: 41.)

The Broncbusters first three losses of the season came when head coach Tom Minnick could not physically coach his team because of health issues. Upon his return, Garden City rolled to three straight wins before dropping a three-point decision against then-No. 9 Snow.Garden City's four losses all came to nationally-ranked teams (Butler, Iowa Central, Iowa Western and Snow).Hutchinson Community College (7-0, 4-0) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after taking just eight plays to cover 72 yards in 4 minutes and 15 seconds.&nbsp;Dylan Laible finished the drive by finding Marcello Bussey for a 17-yard score. The TD pass was one of three for Laible on the day. For the second-straight game, his day ended early.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Laible racked up three touchdown passes for 198 yards on 15 of 26 throwing. Colin Shields entered with 1:39 left in the third quarter to finish Dragon quarterback duties.&nbsp;The Dragons put up 27 unanswered points before one mistake led to another late in the first half.&nbsp;Hutchinson jumped offside on a 4th-and-4 punt in the closing moments of the second quarter. On the next play, quarterback Gabe Friend hit wide receiver Martiel Singleton for a 70-yard scamper. Singleton was forced out at the two, but the Broncbusters would score two plays later on a Travis Dixon one-yard burst.&nbsp;Coach Drew Dallas said those plays cost his team some momentum headed into the locker room.&nbsp;"(I'm) proud of how they came out in the second half," Dallas said. "Especially (knowing) how they ended that first half. They played great the second half."Hutchinson scored the game's first 27 points, then went on a 38-point run to close the game.&nbsp;The first 27 points came from Bussey, Laible, Malik Benson and kicker Cole Segraves.&nbsp;Laible sneaked in from one-yard away in the first quarter for only his second rushing touchdown in his career.&nbsp;Segraves hit two field goals (21 and 32) before Benson took a 40-yard reception to pay dirt.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The second-half run came compliments of some defensive points and interceptions.&nbsp;Hutchinson picked off Garden City five times (three different quarterbacks), two of those interceptions were house calls.&nbsp;The five interceptions and two pick-sixes tied team records for one game.&nbsp;Jalik Thomas was the first Dragon defender on the board when his second INT went 38 yards to the end zone.&nbsp;Not to be outdone, Ja'Maric Morris took his second interception of the day 75 yards to the house.&nbsp;Hutchinson pushed Garden City back in the run game. The Broncbusters finished with negative three yards on the ground.&nbsp;"Allowing negative yards rushing is something special," Dallas said.&nbsp;The 70-yard reception Hutchinson gave up just before the half accounted for all but 20 of Garden City's first-half yards.&nbsp;In all, the Broncbusters managed 176 yards on 68 plays (2.6 yards per play). Garden City converted just two times on 14 third-down tries.&nbsp;Despite the success, Dallas knows his team can improve."We'll find something to critique, obviously to get better," Dallas said. 🏈 HUTCHCC: No. 1 Dragons hang 65 on Broncbusters

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There was a fire in the attic and on the back side of the house at 1717 North Adams Friday night, but everyone inside got out safely.&nbsp;

Hutchinson firefighters got to the house just after 10:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the north side of the house and from the eaves.

Some firefighters put out the flames, while others cut a hole in the roof to vent out heat and prevent additional ignition. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Hutchinson Fire Department works Friday night blaze

Hutchinson $10K winner in Kansas Lottery event Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation announced Friday that Hutchinson will receive a Cost Share award of $1.5 million for Phase 1 of the Woodie Seat Freeway project. 

The City of Hutchinson and Reno County made a submission of two projects that do not include the proposed single roundabout that is still being studied.

The award will cover approximately 42% of a $3.6 million dollar project that will assist in the repair and preservation of the Woodie Seat corridor including the County owned bridge over the Arkansas River and the City owned infrastructure located north of the bridge and south of Avenue C.

The city project will mill and overlay the road surface, replace stormwater drains and piping, replace guardrails, and remove the median at a cost of $2.2 million. The county project will resurface the bridge at a cost of $1.4 million.

"The program is a unique aspect of the ten year transportation program, the IKE program," Kelly said. "It's a cost share, which means that the state ponies up, but the locals also pony up. It has allowed us to do so much more and for our local communities to get more projects in the pipeline."

The city will receive $900,000 of grant funds. The county will receive $600,000. In other words, after the grant, the city's share will be $1.3 million and the county's share will be $800,000.

"It's really, in my opinion, a home run for the community," said Hutchinson Interim City Manager Gary Meagher. "We set aside some ARPA money, the city did, for this project. Here's about $900,000 that we have that we can use for other infrastructure projects, if that's what the council wants us to do. It's great that we're able to get this cost sharing grant."

This is part of $22 million in cost share grant awards across the state announced Friday. The bid on the Woodie Seat project will be let in January 2023.

Woodie Seat project to get $1.5 million KDOT Cost Share grant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police released the information they know at this time about the incidents at Hutchinson Middle School 7.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police released the information they know at this time about the incidents at Hutchinson Middle School 7.At approximately 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Hutchinson Police Department officers were notified of an incident where a student pointed a firearm at another student while at school at Hutchinson Middle School 7 earlier in the day. Officers immediately attempted to locate the suspect but were unsuccessful.The police department and USD 308 school officials worked together to ensure the safety of all students and staff.&nbsp; Friday morning, uniformed and plain clothes officers were stationed at the school and the student was contacted upon his arrival. A search of his backpack revealed a loaded firearm, and the student was taken into custody. Due to the victim and suspect being twelve years of age, their names will not be released.Based on the information police have now there is no evidence the student intended to conduct a mass shooting, but this is an ongoing investigation.
