HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The bonds for the Sports Arena are still scheduled to be retired in mid-2024 if the Hutchinson City Finance Director is able to keep to her plan.

"I am working with bond counsel on this right now," said Angela Richard. "The City Council will have to approve the early payoff, so it may be on the agenda sometime soon."

The original intent was to retire a little less than $2.5 million in bonds by the end of this year and finish the rest out in mid-2024, but because of changes in interest rates and increases in collections due to inflation, Richard does not yet have the specific number.

The .35% sales tax was approved by voters in 2015 to fund the $29 million renovation project. The tax was originally expected to generate about $300,000 per year.
