STERLING, Kan. — Sterling Community Theatre is presenting Disaster Thursday, Friday and Sunday at the Sterling High School Theater. The Thursday and Friday performances are at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
Larry & Amy Brownlee got a chance to meet one of the writers of the production in person.
"Seth Rudetsky is one of the writers," Larry Brownlee said. "He's a Broadway accompanist, has played for many Broadway shows and he has a talk show on the Broadway Channel on SiriusXM. He was in McPherson doing kind of a live show and we went and saw that show and had a chance just to say hello and at that point we had no idea we'd ever be doing this show."
The show was on Broadway in 2016.
"There are 34 songs from the 70s in the show," Brownlee said. "Most of the songs, they just play little bits, some of them, they have more of the whole song. It's Captain and Tenille, Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Tony Orlando, B.J. Thomas, Chicago, Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, Helen Reddy, Donna Summer."
The plot follows a group of New Yorkers that attend the opening of a floating casino and disco that is the victim of disaster after disaster. The Sterling troupe is particularly strong for a town its size.
"A lot of that comes from the training in the school system," Brownlee said. "Kids get great training in music and theater. The college program is strong. A lot of people in the community, we've got the Harding family that just moved in. We've got great talent there and that happens fairly often."
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 students and will be available at the door before each performance.
