KINGMAN COUNTY — The Kingman County Sheriff's Office released information Monday on an incident that took place over the weekend.

According to the release, Kingman County authorities were informed of a chase coming into their county from Pratt County. Around 6:16 p.m. Sunday, a Kingman County Sheriff's deputy located the vehicle, which continued to flee.&nbsp;

The suspect vehicle struck a Kingman County Sheriff's Office vehicle in an attempt to elude capture. Both the suspect vehicle and a Kingman County Sheriff's vehicle caught fire during the pursuit. The deputy was checked out by medical personnel in Kingman and released.

One suspect, later identified as Graham Green was caught around 6:52 p.m. The second suspect, later identified as Graesen Jackson was caught around 8:05 p.m.

Both suspects received treatment in Kingman and then were transferred to Via Christi St. Francis before being released to law enforcement. Both men are from Illinois and are being held in Kingman County pending charges related to the chase.&nbsp;

The investigation continues. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Kingman County sheriff details capture after chase

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — State and local elected officials gathered to discuss education with school leaders at a collaborative luncheon on Friday, April 21, 2023.&nbsp;

The event was hosted by USD 308 at their Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy. In partnership with the Hutchinson chapter of the National Education Association, the luncheon gave local officials and school leaders an opportunity to discuss their unique experiences and how to move forward in a collaborative effort to support students and families.&nbsp;

In attendance were members of Hutchinson City Council, Reno County Commissioners, and state legislators, as well as representation from the Kansas Board of Education. Attendees were prompted to share the challenges they see facing education, as well as ideas on how local schools can meet the needs of the communities they serve.

“It is always wonderful to welcome leaders into our schools. Days like today where we can learn from each other, share successes, and talk about difficulties we face are so important. When we have the chance to come together we can collaborate on solutions,” said USD 308 Board Member Kail Denison.

The event is meant to serve as the first of several regularly planned collaborative conversations between elected officials and educational leaders in Reno County. As local school districts face declining enrollment and teacher shortages, leaders are strategizing on ways to adapt and continue providing quality education to students and families. The Leaders Luncheon event began with the goal of creating avenues for conversation and problem-solving.&nbsp;

“Education is a vital component of American society, reflecting a commitment to personal and collective growth, progress, and innovation. It is an essential tool for building a better future for ourselves, our communities, and our nation.&nbsp;I’m thankful for those who took the time to participate in this event and look forward to many more collaborative conversations&nbsp;so we may continue serving our families and communities together,” said USD 308 superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson.

This event will take place in the Doctor’s Park Community Room, located across the hall from the Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County office at 2020 N. Waldron, Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Join Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County for the Seasons of Life Service. During this time you will have a chance to remember those you have lost and reflect on the seasons of life and grief. We hope you will join us on your grief journey.

This event will be indoors, rain or shine. Seating will be provided. Parking is available around the building.

Seasons of Life event with Hospice May 1

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce announced their newest employee on Monday.

Sarah Diamond has been hired as the Downtown &amp; Grants coordinator. Sarah moved to Reno County in 2020 after living in the Manhattan area for 13 years.

Sarah brings an extensive background in grant writing, fundraising, and volunteer development. Her experience includes working with small businesses and non-profits across many different fields. Additionally, she has experience starting small businesses and managing and leading non-profit organizations.

In 2018, Sarah founded Diamond Grants and Consulting which offers granting writing and consulting services for small businesses and non-profits. She has a passion for educating, writing, philanthropy, and working with rural communities to help sustain them.

Diamond holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education, a Master of Agriculture in Agricultural Education, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in adult education. 

The focus area of her doctoral research encompassed volunteer leadership development and the motivation and retention of volunteers in community-based non-profit organizations.

Sarah has lived in Kansas since graduating from Oklahoma State University in 2005. Her hobbies include spending time with her family, running ultramarathons, traveling, enjoying farm life, and gardening.

Land is the foundation of agriculture, whether it’s the fertile, deep soils along river bottoms that nourish row crops or the rolling hills of grass waiting to be eaten by livestock. Everything a farmer or rancher does begins with the land. In Kansas, many farmers and ranchers have inherited at least a portion of their land from a family member and they have a strong desire to pass it on to the next generation. Tending the ground isn’t just an homage to their heritage, it’s also an equity stake in the future. It’s quite an honor to follow in the family footsteps, especially when those treads go back a century or more. But it’s also a burden to be the owner and caretaker of the family legacy. The expectations aren’t just preserving the land. Instead, the charge is to steadily improve it and leave it in a better condition. It’s almost a sacred oath landowners adhere to. Owning land is a long-term investment, and today’s farmers and ranchers use the latest research and implement the best practices to get the most out of their land while preserving its productive capacity for the future. They also understand at some point the technology they employ now will be as out of date as the moldboard plow and flood irrigation are today. They’ll implement incremental changes and seek out new ways to work the soil to benefit their bottom line and ensure a stronger foundation for the succeeding generation. Private property rights are crucial for farmers and ranchers to know they’ll benefit from all the work they put in to growing the safest, most wholesome food in the world. Owning land means having the privilege of deciding its best use. Thankfully, the government can’t prescribe crop rotations, order a rancher to only raise a specific breed of cattle or pass legislation that every barn needs to be painted red. At its core, private property is about more than just owning land – it's about having the freedom to create, innovate and invest in the future knowing you’ll reap the fruits of your own labor. Appeals to the common good are nice, but self-interest is more powerful at aligning individual incentives to benefit society at large. Farming and ranching are businesses, but their success or failure is not measured by quarter or fiscal year. The real scoreboard is every successive generation that can find new ways to make an old vocation better. Their ancestors instinctively understood land was not a short-term investment. Over the long haul, it’s a store of both value and values. Tending the soil and caring for livestock are required down payments for the reward of leaving a legacy. Stewardship is a way of life, and it all begins with the land. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday will discuss potential Requests for Proposal to designate an official Reno County newspaper.

According to agenda documents, the State of Kansas requires the publication of various documents, such as legal notices, county resolutions, quarterly financial statements, and the notice of county public hearings. 

This list of publications is not all inclusive of the requirements. The Hutchinson News is currently the newspaper for official county publications.

Reno County is requesting qualifications and pricing for a newspaper to serve as the official county newspaper. Once designated the official county newspaper shall serve until such time as the governing body designates a different newspaper.

The requirements to be designated as official county newspaper are set out in K.S.A. 64-101 and are as follows:

1. The newspaper must be published at least 50 times each year and has been so published for at least one year prior to the publication of any official county publication.

2. The newspaper must be entered at the post office in the Reno County as periodical class mail matter.

3. The newspaper must have general paid circulation in Reno County on a daily, weekly, or yearly basis and is not a trade, religious, or fraternal publication.

4. The newspaper must be published in Reno County.

Newspapers shall respond with documentation that they meet the requirements and pricing by the Reno County Commissioners on or before _____________, 2023 to be considered as a candidate to be the Reno County Official newspaper.

The reason there is not yet a return date in the proposal is because it is still possible for the governing body to table the idea to a future meeting or to not send out the RFP at all.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Mustang driven by Tristan G. Sheets, 19, Kingman, was westbound on MO 360 four and one half miles west of Springfield.

The car traveled off the road and struck a guardrail.&nbsp; EMS transported Sheets to Cox South in Springfield. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Kansas teen hospitalized after crash in Missouri

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel notes that the Chamber is actively trying to get grant funding from the state to assist with the child care capacity issues in the county. It is keeping good talent from the community at this point.

"As we give them tours and they are trying to move to Hutchinson, and they suddenly learn that they can't find a slot for an infant in a local daycare, that becomes an employability issue for our businesses," Teufel said.

The collaboration on an application for&nbsp;the Kansas’ Children’s Cabinet Accelerator Grant will have multiple entities across the county joining together on one application.

"It's going to be, it looks like, a collaboration of about six potential child care expansions in the community," Teufel said. "Those are either school districts or private child care centers, not for profit child care centers across Reno County that all have some shovel ready plans, or nearly shovel ready plans of how to expand slots."

These centers, if they are able to get started, will be spread throughout the county.

"They are anything from Buhler investing in modular units that might stand up a new infant and toddler program at Buhler Grade School or at Plum Creek," Teufel said. "There's some potential for Central Christian to renovate a building to add some capacity. There's some potential in Haven for them to add a facility, either in Haven or Yoder for some new infant and toddler programs and then there's the possibility of Hutch Regional Healthcare System developing a center that could create a large number of slots."

Chamber is lead agency looking for state childcare money

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Manager Kendal Francis is doing as he was directed by the City Council on Tuesday and trying to get a meeting together of stakeholders at the Hutchinson Regional Airport to talk about next steps after hearing from a consultant on a potential business plan for the facility.

"We're trying to schedule a meeting with all the stakeholders," Francis said Friday. "I've kind of tapped a day in my mind. I have my team kind of working through those details. It would be in late May and then we'll have a study session to unpack that a little further."

With the success of the spec building in Hutchinson in drawing additional proposals for business expansion, Hutch Post asked Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel if the idea of a spec hangar might be something she thought could work.

"It wasn't a surprise to me that is one of the recommendations that came out of the study," Teufel said. "We really do have the potential to draw more aircraft activity here if we have more hangar space. There have been some opportunities over the last few years to work with the FBO at the airport and also work with Midwest Malibu on some expansion opportunities."

It's important as a first step to be sure that the needs of those that are already on the ground here in Hutchinson are met. It seems that both the City Council and the Chamber are interested in making that happen.

"I think taking care of those businesses that are right there on our airport is so important," Teufel said. "One way we take care of them is making sure that people who own planes actually can house their planes on our airport. It seems like a no brainer to me that we would develop some more hangar space, because then, you get more people housing their aircraft here. They are flying out of here, then they are refueling here, that helps our FBO operator, then they are also getting their maintenance done right here. It all goes hand in hand."

Meeting for airport stakeholders likely late May

KINGMAN COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Ford Edge driven by Melody M. Brawner, 48, Newton, was&nbsp; traveling southwest on Kansas 2 at Southeast 140 Avenue.

The SUV crossed the center line, traveled off the roadway to the left, continued in the ditch, struck the embankment at SE 140th Avenue, rolled and came to rest on the driver side facing west.

EMS transported Brawner to St. Francis in Wichita. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Woman from Newton hospitalized after SUV rolls

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss is watching closely to try to figure out what the end of the debt ceiling process will be, but right now, no one knows.

"Come June, you're going to see some knees start to wobble," Goss said. "Something has got to be done. It's unacceptable for it to be getting that close to breaching that number, $31.4 trillion is now the debt limit. We've already moved beyond that. We just need the Congress and the President to move on this and move in a positive direction and do something about it. That may mean cutting spending, which I support, as well."

Where can they cut? Goss has a couple of ideas.

"Let me give you one item I think should be cut," Goss said. "That's the CHIPS Act. $280 billion going away, given to big corporations to support development of chips in the U.S. In my judgment, that's ill spent. That's not good spending. That should not have been done. It should be pulled back. That's $280 billion. Also, $113 billion to Ukraine to support continuing war in Russia, without a call for any sort of negotiations? I'm hoping for negotiations. I don't see any movement in that direction. I'm sure I'll get some disagreement on both of those items, but there you are talking about almost half a trillion dollars."

Goss: Debt ceiling process still unclear, cuts also needed

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council will have several items that help with future planning on their agenda Monday evening.&nbsp;

Daniel Lizalde of Hot Rod Resurrections will be at the council meeting to discuss the 4th of July Car Show event and the council also plans to discuss other aspects of the 4th of July celebration.

In addition, the city will get an update on the process of recruiting a replacement for City Administrator Joseph Turner. They will also look at an extension of their trash hauling agreement with Nisly Brothers.

Immediately following the council meeting, the South Hutchinson Land Bank will meet, with the intent to discuss taking on&nbsp;three vacant parcels in the Prairie Ridge development as a donation.

The South Hutchinson City Council meets at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall at 2 South Main in South Hutchinson.

HARVEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating after a pipe bomb was found in Newton.

Just after 6 p.m. Saturday, an officer was dispatched to an empty lot in the 900 block of N. Sherman in Newton on a report of a suspicious device, according to a media release.

The officer briefly examined the device and believed it to be a homemade pipe bomb. It appeared as if ignition had been attempted but failed.

Authorities in Newton contacted the Wichita Police bomb squad who responded to the scene. They were able to safely examine and X-ray the item and determine it was, in fact, an improvised explosive device.

 The device was safely contained by the bomb squad and transported to Wichita, where it will be processed, examined more thoroughly and safely disposed of. 

On Sunday, police reported they had no suspects and released no additional details.

Police: Homemade pipe bomb found in Newton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month Shannon Stuckert, teaching English as a Second Language in Hutchinson Middle School-7 and Hutchinson Middle School-8 is still a rewarding job day to day and there is one language that can bring her students all together, even if their languages at home are different.

"Lots of laughter," Stuckert said. "Students communicate with their facial expressions and even though one student may not be able to speak another student's language, things can occur in the classroom that can be very hilarious. That's the best part of teaching, I think, is when everyone starts giggling about something."

It can be a challenge for children coming in at the middle school level who have learned to speak another language at home and for whom English is new.

"There's different approaches that we use at the middle school level," Stuckert said. "It's mainly engaging students and giving them some hands on experiences and even learning the culture of being in the United States."

Stuckert has been in teaching for 33 years and this is her 25th year in USD 308.

"About 20 years ago, I was working on my master's degree and doing research, primarily in English as a Second Language and I was asked by administrators at that time to create and help to implement a district-wide program, so now, we're able to serve students that are learning English as their second language in every building in USD 308."

Stuckert's goal is to give her students enough English skill to allow them to succeed in their regular academic classes.

"I teach our students English," Stuckert said. "I focus on the four domains of reading in English, writing in English, listening in English and speaking in English, but I also offer support for their core classes."

Stuckert has also previously taught adult education classes for USD 308 and for Newman University in Wichita for teachers seeking their ESOL endorsement.

Teacher of the Month: Laughter is first language in Stuckert's ESL class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education will discuss approving a lease for additional space from Park Place Christian Church for Reno County Head Start for the coming year. That lease agreement will be before the board at the board meeting on Monday.

Reno County Head Start has been leasing space from Park Place Christian Church since 2019.

The district and the church continue to have a successful partnership and have so many families requesting the location that it has resulted in having an on-going waitlist. 

Beginning for the 2023-24 school year, Reno County Head Start will lease an additional classroom at Park Place to increase the number of children served. The additional room will be able to serve 15 additional children. 

This will allow more families with children ages 3-5 to participate in the program with a central location in Hutchinson.

The Park Place Christian Board has approved use of the space.

The lease will be $1,100 monthly for 2 classrooms, 1 office and use of the kitchen from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. This is a total of $13,200 annually.

The USD 308 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the school district offices at 1520 North Plum.&nbsp;

USD 308 to have additional Head Start slots 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas sees the price at the pump going up, but it's still not what last year was.

"Over the last few weeks, we've seen an increase in gas prices," Steward said Friday. "Crude oil rose pretty significantly after OPEC announced its production cut plans. Right now, in Kansas, we're at $3.42 a gallon. That's up 10 cents from a week ago."

Below are prices in area counties as of Friday:

"We're up 38 cents from where we were a month ago," Steward said. "Putting it in perspective, we're 26 cents less than the $3.68 per gallon national average and the Sunflower State currently is the 11th lowest average in the nation."

Warmer weather traditionally puts upward pressure on prices.

"The indicators have really been all over the map," Steward said. "Typically, we're starting to get into a more high demand period, but in the last week, we saw a dip in demand. We also saw a dip in oil prices, that fell back into the upper seventies per barrel. They had been above 80. Right now, there's still some concerns on the global crude oil market about interest rate increases and a recession."

It's also the time of the year when refineries finish the transition between refining winter and summer blend gasoline. The summer blend is a little more expensive to make and that cost is passed all along the line and eventually to the consumer at the pump.

AAA: Gas prices going up

HAVEN, Kan. — Penny Poitras with the Haven Senior Center sent Hutch Post a note on Saturday saying that they have not received any&nbsp;vendor applications for the upcoming market, which is due to open May 2.

The Market will be at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/156503145284607/user/100084201546558">Haven Senior Citizen Center</a>&nbsp;this year in the air-conditioned comfort of the facility at 106 South Kansas St. in Haven.

The Market will be on the first and third Tuesday each month from May through October from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Center is going to charge a $10 fee per stall/table to offset the costs associated with the event. 

 Space is limited so, if you are an interested grower, producer, baker, crafter, or even direct sales rep, please contact the center for an application to register as a vendor.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Freeze Warning for overnight from midnight to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 are expected over portions of central, south central and southeast Kansas.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other  sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor  plumbing.

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. 

Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

Freeze Warning early Sunday morning

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will swear in a new City Clerk at its meeting on Tuesday.

A retirement party for long-time Buhler City Clerk Merrill Peterson is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 27 at the city offices. Peterson has served Buhler for 27 years.

The plan is for deputy clerk Sara Howard to take over, but the council could theoretically choose anyone, as they will make the official decision Tuesday.

Also on the agenda is a water rates ordinance for the city and an MOU for a Pathways Grant.

The Buhler City Council will meet Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Buhler city offices.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Dancers from the Pointe School of Dance in Hutchinson will be performing in the school’s 17th Annual Recital on Sunday, April 30 at Memorial Hall. &nbsp;

Around 150 dancers, ages 3 to 18, will take the stage.&nbsp;

 </figure>By JUDD WEIL&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Dancers from the Pointe School of Dance in Hutchinson will be performing in the school’s 17th Annual Recital on Sunday, April 30 at Memorial Hall. &nbsp;Around 150 dancers, ages 3 to 18, will take the stage.&nbsp;There are 32 numbers in this year’s recital, followed by the&nbsp;finale in which all dancers get to come out and bow. &nbsp;“They range in style from ballet, lyrical, jazz, tap, musical theatre, contemporary and hip hop,” Glenda Boor with the Pointe School of Dance said. &nbsp;Fourteen of those dance&nbsp;numbers, including eight&nbsp;solos, will be&nbsp;performed by the&nbsp;Pointe Precision Group. &nbsp;“They are our competitive dancers that learned their dances in October and traveled to four&nbsp;competitions in February and March,” Boor said. “The&nbsp;competitions were in Kansas, Oklahoma, and&nbsp;Missouri.”&nbsp;The recital’s largest number will be their Aladdin&nbsp;Production. It will feature 57 students and is almost nine&nbsp;minutes long.&nbsp;Pointe Dance students started class at the end of August. &nbsp;In preparation, students learned and performed dances for the Cancer Council of&nbsp;Reno County’s Starlight event in October and Christmas dances performed for family and friends at Stringer Fine Arts Center in December. They started learning and perfecting these dances in January.&nbsp;Boor said the Recital is the&nbsp;culmination of eight months of hard work. &nbsp;“It takes a lot of courage to&nbsp;perform in front of 1,000 plus people,” Boor said. “Getting to the stage means you dedicated yourself to dance for eight months. You may have sacrificed other&nbsp;activities you wanted to attend&nbsp;because you had dance class, you may have been tired after school but still went to dance class, you may have been up late finishing homework after dance class.” &nbsp;Boor added, teaching kids to stick with something for an extended period of time, even&nbsp;when it is difficult sometimes, is so valuable for&nbsp;their future. &nbsp;“We work to build their self-confidence and teach them to take pride in all they have worked for and accomplished,” Boor said. “This self-worth is evident in their&nbsp;performance and is what makes my job so rewarding.” &nbsp;This year, the recital’s performance will see two graduating seniors performing. Kali Trotter is celebrating her 10th year and Aubri Pankratz is celebrating her 15th year.&nbsp;The Pointe School of Dance has been holding the Annual Recital every April since opening in Hutchinson in 2005.&nbsp;Stage rehearsals will take place on April 24 from 4:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., April 25 from 4:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., then a complete&nbsp;dress rehearsal on April 28 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. &nbsp;Admission is free to attend the Pointe School of Dance’s 17th Annual Recital.
