Wind Advisory in effect Tuesday night

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1 p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Ford Explorer driven by Lauren R. Saenz, 30, Lyons, was southbound on Kansas 14 and Kansas 156.

The driver failed to stop at the stop sign. An eastbound 2021 Toyota Camry driven by Alex&nbsp;Kasperczak, 64, Swindon, United Kingdom, struck the SUV.

EMS transported a&nbsp; passenger in the Toyota identified as Judy Robbins, 60, Swindon, United Kingdom, to the Ellsworth County Medical Center. The drivers were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Woman from Lyons avoids injury after 2-vehicle crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the last 17 years, the University of Kansas men's basketball program has entered the NCAA Tournament with an average seed of 1.6.&nbsp;

Bill Self's teams have won two national championships (2008, 2022) and played for another (2012) in that span.

The nine-time conference coach of the year said winning is different when fans expect titles every year.

"Winning is a relief," Self said. "Winning becomes a relief and losing is a disaster."

<a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/dillon-lecture-series">Self spoke in the Hutchinson Sports Arena Tuesday for the Dillon Lecture Series (DLS) about what it takes to be successful</a>. He also addressed how to achieve more after a goal is reached.

Self asked for the Wichita State fans to make some noise. A few did.&nbsp;

He asked for the K-State fans to make some noise. The crowd got a little louder.&nbsp;

As the applause faded, Self told those fans they could kindly leave.&nbsp;

All joking aside, Self praised the success of not just Kansas teams, but all collegiate teams because "Iron sharpens iron."

"It raises the bar for everybody," Self said.&nbsp;"We should be great because someone else is good."

Self is the sixth member of the Naismith Hall of Fame to speak for the DLS, now in its 42nd season.

He outlined what it took to be successful with so much pressure. 

"Show up," Self said. "Be fully present. Be a caretaker and contributor."

Self noted he is the chief caretaker of the most prestigious and storied program in the nation, but urged attendees to apply that same drive to their every-day job and life.

"When's the last time you were just present?" Self asked. "When was the last time you were at the dinner table and didn't look at your phone?"

Self outlined the culture change at KU that led to championships and added success.&nbsp;"The less we have to coach, the better we'll be," Self said of his teams that have been player-led.

He said many of those same concepts can be utilized in daily life.&nbsp;

"Add fun to what's going on," Self said. "We've got to enjoy each other. We have to energize a place."

"It's our responsibility to make sure we add value to everyone else," Self noted.

"Have a culture to make everyone better," Self said.

"Acknowledge what you don't know. Become a sponge," Self said to the youth in attendance.

According to Self, the great Henry Iba was a sponge. As an assistant at Oklahoma State, Self was in charge of chauffeuring Iba.

Self once made a comment about another coach that was not positive. "Can you believe this coach did that?" Self asked Iba.

"Let me tell you something," Iba responded. "A broken clock is right twice a day."

Self implored the youth of the audience to listen to their parents.

"Even as a young person, you might think your parents aren't nearly as smart as you," Self said, but he once again used Iba's example of the clock: It's still right two times a day.

City Beverage issues statement on Bud Light can controversy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre will present Blues Traveler on April 25 and tickets are going fast.&nbsp;

Blues Traveler has released a total of&nbsp;14 studio albums, four of which have gone gold, three platinum, and one six-times platinum- selling more than 10 million&nbsp;combined units worldwide. &nbsp;

Over an illustrious career, Blues Traveler has played over 2,000 live shows in front of more than 30 million people. &nbsp;

"This will be their [Blues Traveler] first time performing at the Fox," Josh Davies, Fox Theatre Executive &amp; Technical Director, said. "It is incredibly exciting to have a band like Blues Traveler perform on our stage, especially since they’ve made it the first stop on their current tour."

Blues Traveler playing Fox Theatre for first time

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday heard the presentation of a business and organizational plan for the Hutchinson Regional Airport by&nbsp;Ronald F. Price, P.E. of QED&nbsp;Airport &amp; Aviation Consultants. The takeaway from the presentation is that the airport is underutilized.

"You're not known," Price said. "You're not known. That's unfortunate, but you can change it. It takes initiative and it takes a commitment from the city to put the people, give them the time and the resources to do it, and that's lacking."

The report recommends that the city establish an Airport and Aviation Department within the organizational structure and financial budget of the City and to reclassify the Airport Manager as Aviation Director, reporting directly to the City Manager. 

Then, it is recommended to hire an&nbsp;Airport Manager, reporting to the Aviation Director that does a lot of the day to day work that the Airport Manager does now and allows the Aviation Director to work on the business side and on strategic planning.

The next step Mayor Jon Richardson wants to see is a meeting between those who already use the airport and the City Council to be sure there aren't things they want that would be able to be acted on right away.

"What are we doing with what we have now?," Richardson said. "Can we expand on that easy? Is there low hanging fruit? Then look at the long term, taking what he's put together and what we already have and having the people that are at the airport drive some of those decisions. I think that's how we need to handle it from here on out."

City Manager Kendal Francis asked when they want that meeting to be and Richardson wanted to see it be an evening meeting so that those who use the airport can more easily get there to provide input. Francis said he would look at dates in May and June to figure out what is best.

City Council hears airport study, wants stakeholders meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Middle School - 8 partnered with local professionals to host a Career Day to inspire students on future career paths.&nbsp;

On Friday, April 14, 2023, over 20 local professionals from across Reno County visited HMS-8 to share their experiences in their unique career fields. Students had the opportunity to spend the day visiting with multiple presentations and learning about different career fields represented in their own community.

HMS-8 has been going through the School Redesign process, and Career Day was a way to offer students the chance to influence their own education.

“As part of our Redesign journey over the last few years, we have committed to increasing academic relevance and real-world connections for our students. Our goal is to establish a school culture in which students truly feel engaged and empowered. Our motto is, "My Choice, My Future, My School" and when we challenge our students to join us in the planning and shaping of what their school looks like, events like "Career Day" come about,” said HMS-8 principal, Michael Self.&nbsp;

Students had the opportunity to hear from a registered nurse, personal trainer, professional baker, police officer, firefighter, barber, travel agent, and more. USD 308 staff also attended to share about career opportunities in the education field.&nbsp;

“Students learned about vocational and four-year career paths that they will be exposed to in the nearby future. Thanks to our teachers and community members for partnering to provide our students with this unique opportunity,” said assistant principal, Carlos Marquez.

Community shares careers with middle schoolers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson said Tuesday that they are still looking for applicants for the seventeen openings in the district for teachers. Many of those are at the elementary level.

Langston University is the only historically black college or university (HBCU) in the state of Oklahoma. The hope is to get some decisions made about next year in just a few weeks.

"We may have to take a hard look," Johnson said. "Depending on how we solve this problem, we may or may not move forward with the Graber and McCandless boundary change now. That is a possibility. We know, again, that we have more buildings than we have staff for. We want that facility committee to help us. I'll try to put those two things together. I do want to come back, for those folks who are wondering what we're going to look like next year. My goal is that by the May 8 school board meeting, we have a decision made."

Johnson said they may even have to hold a special board meeting before that, if they can figure out what they are going to do.

Johnson: Teacher shortage may force different elementary alignment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Husband and wife duo, Robert and Jill Garrett, are getting closer to opening the Busy Bee Laundromat in Hutchinson. The Busy Bee Laundromat is supposed to provide Hutchinson residents living around 4th Street a convenient place to do laundry. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The idea for the laundromat came when tenants in the apartments the couple own requested&nbsp;laundry facilities.&nbsp;

“We have a couple of small apartment units, and they did not have laundry facilities,” said Garrett. “We started working towards that.”&nbsp;

While the Garretts worked to provide their tenants with laundry facilities, L &amp;&nbsp;D Speed Queen Laundry, where the tenants were doing their laundry as the next most convenient place, shut down. &nbsp;

“We checked with the laundry to see what was going on and the owners&nbsp;had decided they were no longer going to operate it, so we got into a discussion with them about getting it reopened,” Garrett said. “We figured if our tenants needed it, then other people would need it, too.”&nbsp;

After doing research on laundromats, the Garretts&nbsp;discovered in that in this part of Kansas, there were a lot of outdated, older laundromats. With that in mind, they set out to make a appealing&nbsp;and updated laundromat for their tenants and their community. &nbsp;

They even looked at newer laundromats around Kansas to gauge what they would like and what would provide the best service. &nbsp;

“We saw and liked what they&nbsp;looked like, the feel of being inside them, and the comfort of going to them knowing you could put your laundry in a machine, and it is going to be clean,” Garrett said. “You're going to be safe there and stuff is going to work and you're going to be in and out and it's going to be a pleasant experience. We wanted that for Hutchinson.” &nbsp;

Busy Bee Laundromat will host 20 washers and dryers for customers to use. Once they all get here that is.&nbsp;

“We are facing the same challenges as the rest of America at the time where we are waiting until the machines arrive and we don't get a specific set date as to when that is,” Garrett said. “We have the dryers, and we were told the dryers&nbsp;would be here&nbsp;in the middle of April, but they showed up at the first part of April, so that was great.”&nbsp;

“We're being told the washers should be in sometime in May. We're hoping, again, that happens earlier.” &nbsp;

To prepare for opening, Busy Bee Laundromat has been hard at work not just replacing the outdated washers and dryers, some from the 1980s, but also updating the building itself. &nbsp;

The Garretts have updated the plumbing, the electrical system, and the lights. They are still working on the heating and air conditioning. &nbsp;

Additionally, they are renovating the building for office spaces for employees. Robert Garrett said they intend to employ four people in a rotation. &nbsp;

Also being added to the laundromat will be a kids area to keep children entertained, complete with toys and a little library, while parents work on cleaning clothes. &nbsp;

When it opens, Busy Bee Laundromat will not only give people a place to wash clothes, but also a sweet treat. The Garretts will be selling honey at the laundromat.&nbsp;

“We raise honey bees at our home and so we have honey for sale over the last five to six&nbsp;years,” Robert Garrett, co-owner of Busy Bee Laundromat, said. “When we got this place, we decided to kind of tie that in.”&nbsp;

The Garretts started keeping bees in 2017 to work with the orchard they have&nbsp;at their home. &nbsp;

“When you have bees, you end up with honey, and you end up figuring out how you're going to distribute that,” Garrett said. “We started a little honey business.” &nbsp;

Following the purchase of their building, the Garretts decided to not just sell the honey at the laundromat but theme it properly by naming it the Busy Bee Laundromat. &nbsp;

The Busy Bee Laundromat is anticipated to open on 628 E. 4 St. in mid to late May. &nbsp;

Busy Bee Laundromat will be a clean and sweet place

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Betty Taylor with the Hutchinson Horticulture Club said that their plant sale that is coming up from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Dillon Nature Center Main Building is to support an event that happened last month.

"The biggest expense the club has is our Gathering for Gardeners, which we had in March," Taylor said. "We had like 190 people come to that sometime during the day and six great speakers gave great gardening information. They came from Hays and Manhattan and Wichita, just area people that know a lot about gardening throughout the state."

Members provide the plants for the sale each year.

"We have different categories, from annuals to perennials, wildflowers, herbs, vegetables, houseplants, we even have some ground covers, vines and grasses," Taylor said. "Sometimes, even a shrub or a tree will come and be donated to the plant sale."

The sale is at Dillon Nature Center and it's a labor of love for members.

"They usually start extra plants from seed, or divide perennials that they have growing in their garden," Taylor said. "Sometimes, perennials will self-sew, so they have seedlings that they can pot up. There's very strict rules about getting things potted up and settled into the pot so many days before the plant sale so we know the plant will survive. We've had very good reports about our plant material that we sell."

Also, the plant sale supports monthly club meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. The April 18 meeting is Julia Hulsey on Growing Peanuts and will take place at the Dillon Nature Center, Taylors' Cabin at 3002 East 30th.

2023 Horticulture Club Plant Sale Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement officers at locations across the state including in Hutchinson will be collecting unused medications for safe disposal on Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dillons Marketplace at 3200 Plaza East.

The collection events are part of a nationwide effort to safely dispose of leftover medications to prevent accidental or intentional misuse. Since the Drug Take-Back Day program began in 2010, more than 118 tons of unwanted medications have been collected and destroyed in Kansas alone.

Medications will be accepted at drop-off sites across the state from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday. <a href="https://www.dea.gov/takebackday#collection-locator">Locations can be found by filling out this form.</a>

The National Drug Take-Back Day is coordinated by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, which collects and safely destroys the medications.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates opioid overdoses kill nearly 130 Americans every day. According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, pharmaceutical opioids are a leading cause of drug poisoning deaths in Kansas.

Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that traditional methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards and should be avoided.

Unused prescriptions can be turned in year-round at many local law enforcement locations. Kansans should contact their local sheriff’s office or police department for more information.

KINGMAN COUNTY —Emergency crews were busy Saturday night in Kingman County. 

Just after 11:40 p.m., a 911 call was placed for a possible semi on fire in the area of Highway 54 and NE 150 Avenue. The truck was full of frozen pizza and wontons, according to Kingman County Emergency Management Director Macay Ewy.

 When crews arrived they found the tractor trailer with fire extending into the trailer.&nbsp;

Cheney Fire, Kingman County Sheriff’s Office, Kingman EMS, Kingman Fire and Kingman County Emergency Management assisted. Around 5 a.m. Sunday, crews were still working on unloading what was left of the trailer cargo. There were no injuries and the cause may never be determined, according to Ewy, because the semi was destroyed.

IdeaTek has currently built fiber infrastructure in the nearby Harvey County communities of Hesston and Halstead and has also built fiber to many of Newton’s business districts, serving Newton city buildings and local businesses with internet and phone since 2021. 

Last year, IdeaTek began discussions with Harvey County commissioners on creative ideas to connect remote and rural residents along with critical infrastructure through state broadband grants. IdeaTek continues its efforts to find innovative and economical ways to utilize state broadband grants to connect Harvey County residents and businesses.&nbsp;

IdeaTek's latest investment in Newton is set to inject approximately $12 million into the local economy, connecting 9,000 homes and businesses to fiber internet. Construction is expected to start in the coming weeks.

Friesen said that investment in fiber is a scalable solution for future growth in Kansas. Fiber offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, scalable capacities to meet the bandwidth demands for several decades, plus greater reliability and better pricing compared to Newton's current service providers.&nbsp;

“We build to the standards of the future, not today,” he said. "Fiber internet is the gold standard for internet connectivity, and we want to bring this technology to as many communities as possible.”

Residents will have access to unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second with IdeaTek's rollout. IdeaTek also does not require contracts.&nbsp;

Ideatek residential fiber coming to Newton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Debra Teufel with the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is pleased with the conclusions that Olsson Studios came up with and that were discussed at the public meetings last week as part of the Downtown Hutch Master Plan process.

"Ken Boone was very complimentary of Hutchinson, from the very beginning," Teufel said. "They've been studying our community. They kicked the week off with some economic data that I think will make this community feel really proud. Since 2012, our vacancy rate has dropped from about 12% down to 1%, which is an incredible drop and means we're doing the right things to activate spaces, especially on our core Main Street. I think one of the things he came away with is we need to do a better job of signage, of entrances into the community, of wayfinding and to direct people to the great assets that we have and our tourism assets downtown."

It's also important not only to fill those downtown spaces with business, but to be thinking ahead about housing.

"Over the next 10 to 20 years, we're going to need between 1000 to 2000 more housing units as a community," Teufel said. "They actually project population growth. To keep up with that, we need more housing units. He saw a lot of ways that we can take some of the older industrial warehouse type buildings downtown and convert those into living spaces."

Teufel also was impressed by another statistic that shows more people shopping in Hutchinson than there used to be.

"I was really gratified to see one of the data points he shared about our retail trade pull factor," Teufel said. "That measures how we are doing compared to the rest of the state. In 2017, we were below one, meaning that we were not keeping up with the rest of the state in our retail trade pull. As of today, he measured our retail trade pull factor at 1.19, which means we are doing 19% better than the rest of Kansas when it comes to retail trade pull into our community."

Teufel: Promotion of Hutchinson is working

Living in a small town is wonderful. Knowing people in the grocery store, the space and security for children to play in parks or yards and a shared sense of ownership with your neighbors to help and make life better for each other are some of the things that make this life sweet. Smaller usually feels like an advantage in rural communities, except there are fewer people to help financially support the cost of community resources. Farmers and other landowners cover a large portion of the communities’ financial needs through property tax payments to support local municipalities, schools, hospitals and other taxing entities. Incredibly rural communities often have a choice between shockingly high taxes or a glaring lack of important community services. Bond issues are a way for the community to declare their opinion of whether some of the taxes are worth it. This spring, our school district like many other across the state, has a bond issue on the upcoming ballot. The school is asking our community to make improvements to existing facilities to accommodate unmet and future needs. Bond measures are really asking whether you and your neighbors want to join together and spend money out of your own pocket on an investment in the community. All investments should be considered carefully by weighing the cost against the risk and reward. In our ultra-polarized world, some people will quickly jump to one side or the other of this issue. Some will oppose the measure because the cost is too high or they believe the improvements are not needed. Others are strongly in favor of all investments in education and community improvements regardless of the cost. This community has been fortunate to have had citizens who balanced fiscal responsibility with a vision for a community that is a great place to live. As I look around, it is easy to see all the places where people have made investments of time and money to make our community great. I often marvel about how people have been proactive and really cared about the future of our community. It’s not like that everywhere. I appreciate the past investments and feel a sense of obligation and desire to do my best for the future of this place.&nbsp; Personally, I am typically pro-investment because community growth and improvements to our schools and other facilities make for a high quality of life that attracts new people and helps us all to thrive. However, the idea of more taxes pushes me to temper that reaction with an evaluation of the project before deciding my stance. It is my responsibility as a voter and community member to evaluate the proposed bond against my own desires and the needs of our community. The vote is a few weeks away, and I have been investigating the proposal, discussing it with my fellow voters and seeking knowledge to fill gaps in my understanding. If you have a bond issue in your community, I hope you will take the time to evaluate what is being asked and if the solution is the right course of action. Getting to the decision right can have a big impact on the future of your community. I haven’t made a decision on the bond issue yet but am confident I will walk into the polling booth as an informed voter with the best interest our community in mind. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Lesser Known Lovelies Plant Sale at Dillon Nature Center is coming up April 28 and 29. The Friday night event is for DNC members only.

"You probably want to sign up," said John Gallagher with Dillon Nature Center. "The best plants are available Friday evening. We are open to the public, anybody can come Saturday morning starting at 8 to shop, but I'd recommend getting a membership as soon as possible, so you can come Friday night."

Many of the plants for sale that are not available in most local greenhouses are heat and drought tolerant with more than 23 species of plants available. Each pack will be priced at $4.50.

"After they built their new building, we did a photo album of the types of plants that we used, annual flowers in their flower beds, and realized that a lot of them were not locally available," said Betty Taylor, who helps grow the plants. "That's how the Lesser Known Lovelies sale got started. It's annual plants that bloom for a longer period of time than most perennials and can be used in our climate and do well."

All funds raised beyond the seed cost during the Lesser Known Lovelies Sale will go to benefit the Dillon Nature Center events &amp; programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;
