HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will consider bids for the campus Courtyard and Greenspace Renovation at its meeting on Thursday. 

The recommendation is to approve the low bid from Prairie Landworks, Inc. in the amount of $1,810,000.

The Fire Science program is also upgrading from a 1995 fire engine to a&nbsp;2007 American LaFrance Custom Pumper, The recommended bid is $80,000 from Brindle Mountain Fire Apparatus.&nbsp;

The program will also be buying twelve wireless facepiece radios that are compatible with their breathing equipment at a cost of&nbsp;$ 45,197.88 from TBS Electronics.

The board will also consider a replacement to succeed Marla Eriksen. No name for any potential nominee is listed on the meeting agenda.

The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will hold their meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Justice Theater of the Shears Technology Center at Hutchinson Community College at 1300 North Plum.

Courtyard and Greenspace Renovation on HutchCC Board agenda Thursday

KINGMAN COUNTY — A K-11 bridge over Smoots Creek in Kingman County has reopened to full traffic following repairs and after being restricted to one lane since this past summer.

The bridge on K-11 is northwest of the city of Kingman and about 6 miles north of U.S. 54/400.

Traffic on the bridge had been restricted to one lane as a precaution because of deterioration of the bridge rail. The lane restriction had been in place until further analysis could be completed on the bridge and repair plans could be developed. The analysis determined the deterioration could be addressed with minor repairs. The Kansas Department of Transportation made those repairs and will continue to monitor and inspect the bridge, which had already been planned for replacement.

Construction of a replacement bridge is expected around early 2025. The current bridge was built around 1953.

K-11 bridge in Kingman County has fully reopened

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The United Way of Reno County is holding their Shop Local, Give Local event tomorrow, November 9th. 

The event will have 13 local boutiques and stores and attendees will be able to enjoy shopping from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall.&nbsp;

There is a fashion show, appetizers, door prizes and time to enjoy connection with others. Tickets are $25 at the door. 

The boutiques will be donating a portion of sales to United Way of Reno County.&nbsp;

Shop Local, Give Local Wednesday in Hutchinson

HARVEY COUNTY —Harvey County will begin processing drivers licenses next Wednesday, Nov. 16, and every Wednesday after that. 

The Kansas Department of Revenue arranged to send a processor to Harvey County once a week until staff is hired and trained. 

This will be <a href="https://telegov.egov.com/kdor-dov">by online appointment only</a>, once times are available.

&nbsp;The office has temporarily closed as of Tuesday, Nov. 8. The County says the closure is due to personnel changes.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The deadline for consideration if you want to be on an appointed Hutchinson city board or commission is coming soon.

"People are always looking for ways to give feedback and input into what goes on in their community," said Dave Sotelo with the City of Hutchinson. "A lot of times that's reactive, right? Something that's already happened and then we go and try to figure out how to address what has already happened. This is a good way to stay informed of what goes on in our community, stay engaged and be proactive on the decisions that we are making for our community."

Terms are for three years and will begin Jan. 1.

Those wishing to apply should submit their applications as soon as possible, but no later than Nov. 14. The previous process ended up with a very 'insider' feel to it, in that either current board members or city staff made most of the suggestions.

"They are likely to recommend people that are already represented, because they were part of that board already," Sotelo said. "What we are looking at is changing the culture of how we appoint to those boards, that it's not just who we, staff, and the already appointed commission thinks should be the next person appointed to that board or commission. We think that the community should see themselves as worthy of serving on those boards and commissions."

Deadline to submit for city appointed boards is Nov. 14

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is general election day with statewide and local races on the ballot. 

There are three seats being voted on today for Reno County Commission. One is the seat being vacated by Ron Sellers in District 1. Randall Parks is on the ballot for that seat, with Cris Corey staging a write in campaign. Also up for grabs are the two new seats with the expanded commission that was approved by the public. In District 4, Democrat Michael Jobe and Republican Mark Reese are facing off in the general election. In District 5, Don Bogner won the primary, but Penny Poitras is staging a write in campaign.

Also up today is the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Jerry Moran. He has two opponents in that race, Libertarian David C. Graham and Democrat Mark R. Holland.

Also up are all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Kansas Governor's race is also being contested between four candidates, incumbent Democrat Laura Kelly, Libertarian Seth Cordell, Republican Derek Schmidt and Independent Dennis Pyle.

There are also races for Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Insurance Commissioner.

All 125 state house seats are up for election.

Two Reno County judges are up for retention, Trish Rose and Daniel Galligan.

The State Board of Education seats are also up.

Six of the seven Kansas Supreme Court seats are up for retention, as are seven on the Court of Appeals.&nbsp;

The quarter-cent sales tax renewal in the City of Hutchinson is on the ballot, as is a special question in Arlington for a 1% sales tax increase for 10 years for road and street operation and maintenance.

One polling location note: Haven residents who normally vote at the Haven Senior Citizens Center at 106 Kansas Ave will be voting at the Haven Community Building at 215 South Reno.

General election today; Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A Hutchinson woman is raising money for her boyfriend who recently underwent brain surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, Neb., to remove a tumor on Nov. 7. &nbsp;

To offset the costs of&nbsp;her boyfriend’s medical expenses the woman, Cassie Withington, is making and selling cancer ribbons of any color, as well as&nbsp;puzzle pieces for Autism.&nbsp;

Withington said the&nbsp;tumor was discovered in the last full week of October&nbsp;after her boyfriend, Jesus Reyes, had suffered a pair of seizures. &nbsp;

“There were no strange behaviors, nothing out of the ordinary, every once in a while, he’d fall down,” Withington said. “But it really started to be concerning when he was driving to work one morning, and he had a seizure behind the wheel.”  &nbsp;

Doctors found a low-to-medium grade tumor in Reyes. They will know&nbsp;more, including if the tumor is cancerous, following removal and subsequent study by pathology. &nbsp;

“Scared. Stressed. We were just in awe,” Withington said, when describing how she and Reyes felt upon finding out his condition. 

Reyes had been seeing a local Hutchinson provider for bad migraines. 

According to Withington, the provider told Reyes to medicate with Tylenol and claimed it was just his sinuses from working around dust and dirt.&nbsp;

"That’s what he was doing, and then it just got progressively worse,” said Withington.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Worse culminated&nbsp;when Reyes was&nbsp;working in Nebraska for Hutchinson-based Longfellow Foundations. While driving to a job site, Reyes had his first seizure behind the wheel of his vehicle. He then had another episode at the job site. &nbsp;

He was transported to a hospital in Bellevue, Neb., where staff found the tumor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

From there, Reyes was transferred to&nbsp;UNMC, where doctors ran more tests, including MRIs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“They sent him home for two weeks so we could get stuff figured out with our boys,” Withington said. “When they found the tumor, the doctor said he could not work any more until this was taken care of.” &nbsp;

On Nov. 2, Withington and Reyes went back to Omaha, where they have resided for the last two weeks. &nbsp;

Reyes went in for a craniotomy on Nov. 7, with the intention of removing 80% to 90% of the tumor, subject to location in the brain. &nbsp;

Withington has spent $1,854 for gas, hotel fees, food, and a babysitter for their sons. &nbsp;

Their&nbsp;first hospital bill has not been posted, but is well over $5,000.&nbsp;

Following the operation, Reyes will be out of work for four-to-six weeks and will be severely limited in activity.  &nbsp;

Post-initial surgery procedures&nbsp;for Reyes could be anything from radiation therapy or chemo therapy, depending on what pathology determines.&nbsp;

Withington said she decided on her method of raising money, using her Cricut machine to make cancer ribbons and puzzle pieces for Autism, following a conversation with Reyes’ aunt. &nbsp;

“He got me the Cricut for my birthday,” she said. &nbsp;

So far, Withington has only sold two of her products. She is charging between $10 and $15 for a cancer ribbon of any color or a puzzle piece for Autism awareness. &nbsp;

Withington and Reyes are also interested in trying a cooking fundraiser, based off Reyes’ love for cooking, to raise money for expenses incurred during this tough time in their lives. &nbsp;

Longfellow Foundations has rallied to Reyes and Withington’s aid.&nbsp;

“Jason Holt, the vice president, we went in and talked to him before we went to Nebraska and that company is amazing,” Withington said. “Because I had mentioned his health insurance and he said, ‘don’t worry about his Blue Cross and Blue Shield, we will pay his premium.’ We just have to pay his out-of-pocket.” &nbsp;

He then had another episode at the job site. &nbsp;He was transported to a hospital in Bellevue, Neb., where staff found the tumor.&nbsp;&nbsp;From there, Reyes was transferred to&nbsp;UNMC, where doctors ran more tests, including MRIs.&nbsp;&nbsp;“They sent him home for two weeks so we could get stuff figured out with our boys,” Withington said. “When they found the tumor, the doctor said he could not work any more until this was taken care of.” &nbsp;On Nov. 2, Withington and Reyes went back to Omaha, where they have resided for the last two weeks. &nbsp;Reyes went in for a craniotomy on Nov. 7, with the intention of removing 80% to 90% of the tumor, subject to location in the brain. &nbsp;Withington has spent $1,854 for gas, hotel fees, food, and a babysitter for their sons. &nbsp;Their&nbsp;first hospital bill has not been posted, but is well over $5,000.&nbsp;Following the operation, Reyes will be out of work for four-to-six weeks and will be severely limited in activity. &nbsp;Post-initial surgery procedures&nbsp;for Reyes could be anything from radiation therapy or chemo therapy, depending on what pathology determines.&nbsp;Withington said she decided on her method of raising money, using her Cricut machine to make cancer ribbons and puzzle pieces for Autism, following a conversation with Reyes’ aunt. &nbsp;“He got me the Cricut for my birthday,” she said. &nbsp;So far, Withington has only sold two of her products. Hutchinson couple raising funds for medical bills

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson woman was arrested on rape charges on Monday.

According to a release from Hutchinson Police, they found out on September 30th that there may have been unlawful sexual acts between 32-year-old Tyann White and two juvenile males. Since then, two more boys have been identified as additional victims.

White was arrested on suspicion of four counts of rape, three counts of aggravated sodomy, three counts of aggravated indecent liberties and indecent solicitation of a child.

White is being held at the Reno County Correctional Facility with a bond of $420,000.

This investigation is still ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

Officers were sent to the 300 block of East 8th just after 4 p.m. Sunday for a loud music complaint. Forty-five-year-old Gary McQueen was acting disorderly and so officers attempted to arrest him. McQueen resisted and one of the responding officers was injured.

The officer was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released.

McQueen was arrested for (1) Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer and (2) Interference with Law Enforcement and transported to the Reno County Correctional Facility.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager said that the advance voting numbers were significant through the end of the special hours on Saturday.

"At the close of that, we had 4,787 people come in and vote early," Fager said. "I looked back at 2018 and I think by the end, we had about 5300."

Hutch Post does not yet have Monday numbers, as advance voting closed at noon. However, you can vote at your regular polling place on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Advance numbers significant, turnout likely similar to 2018

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Seth Dewey, Health Educator with the Reno County Health Department, won the 2022 Kansas Prevention Community Leader Award, recognizing his outstanding contribution to community prevention efforts. Dewey was presented the award during the annual Kansas Prevention Conference October 27-28, 2022, in Wichita.

The award is given to an individual who has shown leadership in their community prevention efforts and leads in a way that others want to follow. The person awarded has shown to be a leader for local community action and change.

Dewey said that he was nominated for his work with the Reno Recovery Collaborative, which consists of Reno County citizens and organizations who are committed to the reduction of harm caused by the substance use epidemic. The web site, <a href="http://www.renorecoveryks.com">www.renorecoveryks.com</a>, is a resource tool created for Reno County citizens. The site is designed to help the community overcome the dangers of substance abuse by providing online digital resources and screening tools for people who may be struggling with substance abuse.

Dewey has been with the Reno County Health Department since January 6, 2020.

Reno County Health Educator wins statewide award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thursday, December 8th the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson will host its annual Youth of the Year Banquet. Three finalists will compete for the title of 2023 Hutchinson Youth of the Year. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys &amp; Girls Club member can receive. The winner will advance to the statewide competition.

The candidates this year include Noah Khokhar, Zion Burgess, and Joe Martinez. Thanks to Heartland Credit Union each runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship and the winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

NOAH KHOKHAR: Noah is a senior at Hutchinson High School and has been a Club member for 2 years. Noah plays football for Hutchinson High School and is active in their FCA. Noah enjoys being able to connect with Club youth and getting to know them personally. He hopes to make a positive impact in Club members’ lives.

ZION BURGESS: Zion is a junior at Hutchinson High School and has been a Club member for 5 years. Zion plays football for Hutchinson High School and is active in Club programs such as Passport 2 Manhood, Keystone Club, and Road Code. 2023 Youth of the Year is coming up Dec. 8 at the Burt

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage said Monday that the amount of Special Ed funding that is not coming to his district that would if the current statute were followed is significant.

"Just south of $200,000, like 198," Idacavage said. "That extra cost is calculated at the state level, not at the local level. That is that extra money that districts have to use on special ed costs that should be, or by statute is supposed to be coming from the state level."

Since the money we are talking about is backfilled from the general fund, if Special Ed were funded to statute, it would open up opportunities for all students.

"There's a lot of things we could do with that money," Idacavage said. "It could go to teacher raises, it could go to other programs, not only to benefit just SPED kids that we have, we still have in our building. They could benefit from extracurricular activities that we could add. They could help as we recruit highly qualified individuals to be in our classrooms, as well."

Idacavage noted that though his district is okay for now, keeping teachers can be competitive, especially when they live so close to districts with other opportunities.

"We don't have any openings right now," Idacavage said. "We were able to fill positions with the transition to teach program. It's been huge for us and we've got some great individuals into the building through that program. There are options, but some of the larger districts around us in neighboring counties certainly do pay more."

Idacavage is in his first year as the Haven USD 312 Superintendent.

Idacavage: SPED funding shortage impacts all Haven kids

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Fall brings to mind not just the season, but the spirit of giving and Oxford House Chapter 13 is giving more than they have already, with their upcoming Thanksgiving luncheon and bake sale fundraiser on Nov. 12. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at&nbsp;the McPherson Church of the Nazarene at 1455 North Main in McPherson.

“All of the fundraiser proceeds are to purchase Christmas gifts for the children of parents in Oxford,” said Charles Ford, Chapter 13 fundraiser committee treasurer.

Oxford House will be serving a variety of meats, several sides, and bread from early morning to mid-afternoon at the McPherson Church of the Nazarene, known by locals as MPNaz, at 1455 North Main in McPherson.

Activities will also include a bouncy house and pumpkins for children to paint. Additionally, there will be an Oxford House alumni speaker, Dakota Sanders at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“I’ve committed to helping with fundraiser as a way to give it back. In my past,” said Ford, when talking about his personal passion for Oxford House activities. “I’ve done a lot of dirt, so this is one way for me to make positive change in myself and in my community.”

Ford lives at the Promise Oxford House, where he is currently the housing services representative, fundraiser representative, and 4TK representative for the house. Having been very active in McPherson prior to the fundraiser, Oxford House is preparing to open a men’s recovery home, shortly after opening a women’s and children’s home.

“To ensure that the children and parents in Oxford have a happy holiday, we don’t want the kids to go without. Just because the parents are struggling with addiction or alcoholism, it’s not their [the kids] fault,” said Ford. “The reason we’re doing the event in McPherson is to try and raise awareness in McPherson that we now have a women’s and children’s house there available for the community, and also we are opening their first men’s house.”

The McPherson men’s Oxford House operated by Chapter 13, is anticipated to be opened next month.

Bridge repair causes rural Reno Co. road closure

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Torry Ericson is a Certified Application Counselor with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System and he wants to be sure as many people as are eligible that would save money can do so with the ACA Marketplace. It's free to talk to him.

"Open enrollment is Nov. 1, so it's already started," Ericson said. "It goes through Jan. 15. However, if you want your coverage to go into effect on January 1, 2023, we would have to see you before December 31."

It depends on which county you live in how many plans are available to you on the Marketplace.

"It's just not Reno County that we serve," Ericson said. "We serve the surrounding communities, as well. What we do first, we have this great estimator tool that we look at. We pull that up and we get all of the information that we need, their expected income for the year, how many are in the household, if they are married, if they have kids. Then, that allows us to pull all of the plans they are eligible for based on all of that information, with the tax credits that are provided by the government, which in turn, gives them their monthly premium."

Now is open enrollment for ACA Marketplace, hospital counselors can help

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kiwanis Chili and Soup Fest was back Saturday and the Hutchinson Fire Department won the chili contest downtown. Second place honors went to Salt City Brewery. The Reno County Sheriff's Office was third.

On the soup side, first place went to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, Heartland Credit Union was second and Gentiva Hospice was third.

"We had a lovely day and it was well attended by families and Hutch residents," said Bob Ross with the Downtown Kiwanis Club.&nbsp;

Hutch Rec Foundation annual giving campaign going on now

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said a parking lot expansion project at the district's newest elementary school has to do with unintended consequences of the pandemic.

"As you know, with buses, we are not able to bus quite as many students as we used to," Couchman said. "The unintended consequence of that is more parents in pickup lines and more parents in drop off lines. We're trying to help accommodate that traffic flow. Hopefully, that will make things a little more efficient in the mornings and afternoons for our parents."

The original thought was that they wouldn't need as much parking, but there are still a lot of folks who drive their kids to school each day.

"The parking is pretty limited there," Couchman said. "We actually built an overflow parking for helping with pickup and drop off of students in the mornings and afternoons and with events that are held there, like concerts. We have found that we just didn't have enough parking, even with the overflow parking that we just put in. We're going to expand that overflow parking just to the south there. We've been working with the city and making sure we have permissions to do that and submitting drawings."

The parking will be expanded about 55 feet to the south.

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven City Council will have yet another executive session regarding the ongoing issues with the city pool at their Monday meeting. 

The damage to the zero entry area and the rest of the pool continue to be part of a legal battle that is not yet resolved between the original contractor brought in to renovate the pool and the City of Haven.

No meeting minutes since September when the request for bids went out have reflected any accepted bids on the work, and now the city has hired a new Public Works Director, Chad Swartz. His first report will be part of the Monday meeting, as well.

Haven will also have a couple of items looking ahead to 2023, including an ordinance Implementing future trash and recycling rates and a proposed wage plan for city employees for 2023.

Haven City Council continuing to discuss pool matter privately at meeting Monday

MCPHERSON, Kan. —The Great Plains Nature Photographers will be hosting a day-long seminar on Saturday, November 12. The presentation will be held at the Historic McPherson Opera House located at 219 South Main Street in downtown McPherson, KS. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m.&nbsp; with the program starting at 9:00 a.m. and concluding by 4:00 p.m.

The program is open to the public and not limited to photographers, but to anyone who enjoys nature. Cost is $15.00. Students are free! Light refreshments will be served throughout the day.

The featured speaker will be Kansas born photographer, Judd Patterson Judd began to seriously develop his interest in nature photography while in high school. Judd attended Kansas State University where he completed a Bachelor’s in Biology and a Master’s in Geography.

He continues to pursue nature photography to promote environmental education/conservation and for the sheer joy of being outside. Judd’s photography has been used for a variety of regional and national publications, education centers, and birding guides. He has exhibited in Kansas, Florida, and Washington D.C. and remains highly motivated to capture images of imperiled species and habitats in order to play a role in ensuring their future. As part of the meeting, there will be a nature photography print competition, also open to the public. The Great Plains Nature Photographers consists of photographers residing in or who photograph the Great Plains of North America, from the Dakotas south through Texas. Nature Photographers to hold event in McPherson Nov. 12

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the end of Daylight Saving Time, Kansas motorists need to prepare for related changes during their commute Monday.

"The interruption in sleep patterns, combined with the earlier dusk and darkness during the evening commute, that can become a formula for drowsy driving and fatigue related traffic crashes," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "It usually takes a few days for our bodies to adjust, to not only the very early darkness in the evenings, but much brighter mornings than we've been used to recently."

Ninety percent of drivers’ reaction time is dependent upon their vision, which is severely limited at night.

AAA recommends wearing high-quality sunglasses and adjusting the car’s sun visors as needed. Late afternoon driving also presents a similar glare problem, so drivers should take the same precautions. Use of the night setting on rearview mirrors can reduce glare from headlights approaching from the rear.

"Nationwide, drowsy driving is a factor in an average of 328,000 crashes every year," Steward said. "109,000 of those result in injuries and there are 6400 fatal crashes every year."

Symptoms of drowsy driving can include having trouble keeping eyes open, drifting from lanes or not remembering the last few miles driven.

"More than half of drivers involved in fatigue-related crashes had no symptoms before falling asleep behind the wheel," Steward said. "Be aware of that this time of year. If you are feeling really tired on a long trip, take a break every couple of hours. Just stop on the side of the road or at a rest stop or at a gas station or wherever you can be safe and take a break from the road."

Also, November and December are among the most dangerous months of the year for motor vehicle collisions with animals. A collision with a deer or other animal can put a serious dent in your vehicle, if not destroy it completely, and could result in serious injuries or fatalities. With the time change, you could cross paths with wildlife that you either leave too early or too late to encounter prior to these months.

"That would be a great goal. If you've been into our gym last year, or recently, you've noticed at Jim Baker Fieldhouse at Buhler High School, that our gym floor is torn up. We had a water pipe break at the end of the season last year."They have approval for the insurance claim on the floor."We are just now getting to the point where we are ready to replace that floor," Couchman said. "We had subflooring that needed to be redone. We're reworking the concrete in that gym floor and we are actually going to replace the entire floor of Jim Baker Fieldhouse, and that's a process."That will impact this winter's basketball schedule."It's been torn out for quite some time," Couchman said. "We are going to start working on that. We hope to be laying floor in the next week or so. After that, of course, we will be ready to do. We have to let it cure for a little bit. That means rescheduling some things. Our athletic director, Justin Seuser, has been amazing through this process. He has rescheduled all of our December games.
