HESSTON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a>Schowalter Villa, a Bluestem Communities life plan community, is planning for its annual car show for the public. The car show will be on Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all car, motorcycle and tractor enthusiasts are invited to bring their vehicles to display.</a>

The car show is for Schowalter Villa residents, their families and the general public to enjoy looking at and reminiscing about vintage vehicles. In addition to a lineup of vehicles, there will also be food available for purchase, music and games for kids.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The car show is always a highlight for Schowalter Villa residents because they enjoy reminiscing about the cars and tractors that were part of their own life,” said Cherie Wohlgemuth, car show organizer. “Because of pandemic precautions, we’ve kept our last couple of car shows pretty low key just for residents, so we are excited to welcome the public back this year. It’s a great way to celebrate Father’s Day weekend!”

Schowalter Villa, a life plan community part of Bluestem Communities, is home to more than 435 residents living in health care, assisted living and independent living neighborhoods.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Lauren Storm, Business Retention &amp; Expansion / Workforce Program Coordinator with Greater Hutch, an economic development partnership for Hutchinson &amp; Reno County, was one of 91 economic development professionals to attend the Heartland Economic Development Course (HEDC) April 17-21, 2023, in Blue Springs, Missouri. Heartland attendees receive fundamental economic development training on topics ranging from business, retention and expansion, workforce development, real estate development, and entrepreneurship to marketing, finance, ethics, and managing economic development organizations.

The 2023 HEDC class included representatives from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South Dakota, trained by nationally recognized faculty from within the profession of economic development. HEDC is coordinated by the Institute for Decision Making at the University of Northern Iowa and is accredited by the International Economic Development Council.

“Heartland provides economic developers an opportunity to learn proven skills, techniques and best practices for use in their organizations and home communities.” says Lisa Powell, HEDC Board Chair. “Our goal is to provide a solid foundation upon which each developer can build their base of knowledge and experience.”

The Heartland Economic Development Course is a partnership of the Kansas Economic Development Alliance, Professional Developers of Iowa, Missouri Economic Development Council, Nebraska Economic Developers Association, Select Oklahoma, and the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

Storm completes Heartland Economic Development Course

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the third year, Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson Public Schools, and Greater Hutch, an Economic Development Partnership for Reno County, collaborated to host Signing Day on Thursday, May 4th at HC&amp;TEA.

At the event, 80 High School &amp; Post-Secondary students heard from Debra Teufel, Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce President &amp; CEO, Dr. Carter File, President of Hutchinson Community College, Dr. Dawn Johnson, Superintendent of Hutchinson Public Schools, and Travis Riebel, Director of HC&amp;TEA.

Students signed letters of intent to join their peers and committed to their future technical program pathway of choice including: Automotive Technology, Collision Repair, Welding, Manufacturing Technology, Machine Technology, Construction Trades, and Medical Services CNA &amp; CMA. Family, instructors, administration, counselors, industry partners, potential employers, and government officials celebrated the students and commitment they made to their future.

Signing Day celebrated in Hutchinson

The Reno County Farmer's Market is due to open on Saturday.

"We actually changed it last year," said Sparkle Faidley with the Farmer's Market. "We usually start the weekend before Memorial Weekend. We decided a couple years ago, we have a lot of growers that have hoop houses, so they can kind of control the environment a little bit and get some more produce out a little sooner than usual. We decided the first Saturday of May is a little easier to remember."

The Saturday markets go from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 215 West 2nd in Hutchinson.

"We should have at least four produce vendors that I can think of off the top of my head," Faidley said. "We also have, I believe, at least a minimum of 14 vendors."

&nbsp;The Vieyra Brothers Trio and the Reno County Health Department will both be there for the kickoff.

"We have the SNAP program," Faidley said. "Those that are on SNAP, we have a double up food bucks program, so if you come down to Farmer's Market and redeem the SNAP program, we also provide up to $25 in the SNAP program, so you can get up to $50 in SNAP benefits."

The Saturday market is open each weekend from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in October, always from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., though sometimes certain baked goods run out by noon.

Reno County Farmer's Market to open

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — HutchCC President Dr. Carter File notes that though there are some national concerns regarding credit loss, which is the inability to transfer from a community college to a four year institution and have those classes count, here in Kansas it is handled differently.

"In Kansas, we recognized years ago that this credit loss was a concern," File said. "The regents universities and the community colleges all work very closely together to achieve as seamless a transfer between the two institutions as possible. There are always going to be circumstances where a student may change a major, or they may change where they're going, that's going to create some kind of a credit loss. But, by and large, we've worked very hard, through advising and through other initiatives, to make sure that students don't lose credits when they transfer from a community college to a university."

This is assisted through the way classes are structured at HutchCC.

"We have a gen ed core we're working on right now, which is 32 to 35 credit hours that will transfer anywhere to any university in the state, or actually between community colleges," File said. "Those 35 credit hours will transfer and count towards those exact classes. We're also working on Transfer Kansas, which we sometimes refer to as the transfer and articulation agreement. That is a group of 114 classes that transfer among universities and community colleges, that will transfer as those courses to those universities, without any question. We're also working on what's called program to program articulation, especially for a limited number of programs where, let's just say it's an education major, the student could take the undergraduate, the freshman and sophomore classes at any community college and transfer in to the education major at any university and be junior status. All they would have to take are upper level classes. All of those are efforts to make sure that credit loss is minimized as much as possible."

The state's private colleges are also working on making transferring easier.

"Community colleges signed an agreement just this last fall with the independent colleges in this area, with the Kansas independent colleges," File said. "Essentially, what it says is, if you get an A.A. or an A.S. from a community college, an associates from a community college, you enter those colleges as junior status. As long as they are not classes you need for your major, you do not have to take any additional undergraduate classes. You take just junior and senior level classes."

It is important for students, if they are struggling in classes and need to change their major, to let their advisor know as soon as they possibly can, to mitigate the taking of classes that will not eventually help them reach graduation requirements.

File: HutchCC doing its best to make sure college credits transfer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College livestock judging team wrapped up a successful spring with strong team and individual performances at three prestigious events.

The team visited the world-renowned Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, TX; the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest in West Lafayette, IN; and the Southeastern Livestock Expo in Montgomery, AL.

Attached is a recap of team and individual results for each contest. The team is coached by Kane Austin, Agriculture Instructor.

Junior College All-American Award; awarded to the top 15 individuals for the year based on academic achievement and success at our five major contests.

North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest – West Lafayette, IN

This is an all-encompassing event where students make live carcass predictions, evaluate wholesale and retail meat cuts in the cooler, and evaluate breeding livestock with the use of performance information. It is a three-part, two-day event involving livestock skills and basic math. The AG108 Class (Principles of Meat Evaluation/Meat Animal Team) applies what they learn in the classroom and in attending labs and practices outside of class to compete in the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest that annually rotates between Purdue University and the University of Illinois as the host. This contest is primarily geared towards senior college and university teams that have access to meats labs and more facilities on their campuses. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College livestock judging team wrapped up a successful spring with strong team and individual performances at three prestigious events.The team visited the world-renowned Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, TX; the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest in West Lafayette, IN; and the Southeastern Livestock Expo in Montgomery, AL.Attached is a recap of team and individual results for each contest.  </figure>North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest – West Lafayette, INThis is an all-encompassing event where students make live carcass predictions, evaluate wholesale and retail meat cuts in the cooler, and evaluate breeding livestock with the use of performance information. It is a three-part, two-day event involving livestock skills and basic math. The AG108 Class (Principles of Meat Evaluation/Meat Animal Team) applies what they learn in the classroom and in attending labs and practices outside of class to compete in the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest that annually rotates between Purdue University and the University of Illinois as the host. This contest is primarily geared towards senior college and university teams that have access to meats labs and more facilities on their campuses. HutchCC Livestock Judging has strong spring

WICHITA — Legend Senior Living, a senior living provider headquartered in Wichita, owns and operates 15 residences that have earned a “Best” rating for at least one of the four types of care U.S. News researchers evaluated – Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, and CCRC. 

Only 43% of the nearly 4,000 communities that U.S. News evaluated earned a “Best” rating for even one type of care.&nbsp; The Hutchinson residence was awarded for Best Independent Living.&nbsp;

According to U.S. News, the ratings are based on surveys taken of senior living residents and their families. They are asked to rate “the things that matter most – the kindness of staff; variety of activities; quality of the food and dining experience; whether local transportation is provided to doctor's appointments, grocery stores or other daily needs; the quality of on-site caregiving and more.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded Fund for Reno County grants totaling $71,075 to eight nonprofit organizations in March.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Proposals for the grants are accepted year-round, with awards decided in January, March, May, July, September and November.

The following organizations received grants:

Partridge Community Church, “Gathering to Grow,” $6,500:&nbsp;With the loss of a public school and a local café, the Partridge community is without two critical places where people once gathered. Grant funds will be used to create a gathering place in a vacant lot using trees, native plants and educational features. Community organizers and volunteers are creating a place where people can share experiences and learn from one another. They see the potential for a community garden, building appreciation for native plants and animals and a beautiful setting for musical events, shared meals and quiet contemplation in this community space.

Grace Dental Day Inc., “Grace Dental Day,” $20,000 ($10,000 per year for two years):&nbsp;A high number of people in Reno County are unable to afford dental care. Grant funding will support Grant Dental Day, an annual event where community members can receive free dental services, education on the importance of proper oral hygiene and the impact it can have on overall health, and oral care products for personal use. This event represents the collaboration of many local dental professionals, support team members and volunteers, all working together to provide free dental care to those who need it.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Inc., “Growing Capacity at the Club,” $2,100:&nbsp;In the past 18 months, four of seven senior staff positions have seen turnover. Maintaining high-quality programming and operations at the club is essential for the organization and the youth who benefit from those programs. Grant funding will support the club’s upcoming steps to build capacity and clearly define roles for new leaders and senior staff members through position-specific trainings, leadership development courses, and coaching opportunities, helping ensure the club’s continued success and positive impact on local youth and families.

Arlington Community PRIDE Association, “The Ball is in Our Court,” $3,725:&nbsp;The Arlington Community PRIDE Association works to make Arlington a place that residents are proud to call home and a town that Reno County is proud to hold. They want shared community spaces to be welcoming and safe for residents and visitors. Grant funding will support repairing the community court at the highway park, so it is useful for the whole community to enjoy tennis, pickleball and basketball.

Hutchinson Theatre Guild (Stage 9), “Façade Facelift,” $5,000:&nbsp;The brickwork behind the sign at Stage 9, the home for Hutchinson Theatre Guild productions, is deteriorating, allowing rainwater to penetrate the building’s façade and leading to water damage inside the building. Grant funds will be used for repairs, which will include removing the sign, masonry contract work and replacement of the sign. This necessary upkeep will allow the Stage 9 venue to remain a safe and appealing spot for the group’s productions and other community concerts and events.

Fairfield Schools-USD 310, “Rachel’s Challenge at Fairfield Schools: Hope and Connections Fostering a Culture of Acceptance,” $7,300:&nbsp;Results from the most recent Kansas Communities That Care survey indicated Fairfield schools’ areas of concern are bullying, social/emotional health, depression, suicide, and student engagement and connectivity. Grant funding will be used to engage Rachel’s Challenge, an evidence-based program that addresses prevention of school violence, bullying and suicide among students. In addition to the time students and parents can engage in activity with the Rachel’s Challenge staff, follow-up curriculum will be accessed designed to help students and staff develop plans that promote a culture of respect and kindness.

Arlington United Methodist Church, “ADA Entry and Elevator Project,” $15,000:&nbsp;Arlington United Methodist Church is a hub of community activity, including worship, children’s activities, community meals, annual events and community outreach. The building includes three floors, and the design of the current stairway limits access for those with mobility issues and those moving supplies and equipment between floors for events. Grant funding, combined with contributions from the church’s building fund and a regional grant, will allow for construction of an ADA-compliant entry and installation of an elevator, making this community gathering place accessible to all.

Hutchinson Municipal Band, “Helping Hutchinson Municipal Band Play On: Improving Performance Space,” $11,450:&nbsp;While the performance/placemaking space built in Carey Park during the pandemic through the support of a Changemakers at Work grant has proved to be popular, audience members have cited safety and accessibility concerns. Grant funds represent partial funding in support of suggested improvements to the performance space, which may include more sidewalks, permanent landscaping elements that double as seating, and/or park benches.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen Reno County communities. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $93 million to organizations.

TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly reappointed a member of the Kansas State Fair Board to his position Thursday.

Governor Laura Kelly reappointed Robert Atkisson to the Kansas State Fair Board.

The purpose of the Board is to promote and showcase Kansas agriculture, industry and culture; to create opportunity for commercial activity; and to provide an educational and entertaining experience that is the pride of all Kansans.

Atkisson, of Stockton, was reappointed to the seat reserved for a representative from the Kansas Fairs Association.

Atkisson reappointed to State Fair Board

TOPEKA, Kan. — McPherson will host an event this fall where people can learn more about the Kansas Department of Transportation's&nbsp;newly revised Active Transportation Plan (ATP). The event is from September 20-22 at the McPherson Community Building.

Increasing active transportation opportunities across Kansas – whether walking, cycling, using a wheelchair, skateboarding, etc. – is the goal of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s newly revised Active Transportation Plan (ATP).

The ATP will serve as a guide for KDOT and Kansas communities on how to include and promote active transportation infrastructure when planning roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects. The plan was developed with extensive input from Kansans and with guidance from KDOT and other state agencies, stakeholders and partners. National and local experts in planning, design and safety were included in the plan’s development process.

Funding for active transportation projects is included in the 10-year Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, or IKE.

In addition to the McPherson in person event KDOT will host “Bike, Walk and Roll” webinars where attendees can learn how to implement the plan in communities. Webinars begin May 24 and continue through the year.

McPherson to host KDOT event in September

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sue Wray with BrightHouse says those who need help with domestic violence situations in the area can now text to get help.

"You can do it one of two ways," Wray said. "You can download an app. It's really easy to do. You can download it for IPhone or Android phones it's Bright KS and the KS is capitalized. You download the app and one thing that's important that we want people to understand, it does not show up on your phone, as though you've downloaded anything from BrightHouse."

If you get into a situation and don't have the app downloaded, there is another way to get help.

"If you can't download the app, the other way you can do it, you can text LIGHT to 847411 then add a space and you can type in your information," Wray said.

"It's our crisis line staff and they respond immediately," Wray said. "They will respond through a text. That way, if you cannot use a phone to ask for help, it's another way to get that help to you quicker."

This is in addition to the 24-hour crisis line. It is still available at (620) 663-2522.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday will approve the solid waste fees for 2024 at the Reno County Landfill.

The staff recommendation is that&nbsp;Reno County User Fees stay the same as year 2023. Those fees are $96-Residential $106-Commercial

Out of County Tonnage would increase to $36 per ton.

Special Waste would increase by $1 to $41 per ton or $61 per ton for asbestos.

C&amp;D rates would remain the same as in 2023 $10 per ton or a $10 minimum, if a mixed load $20 per ton or $20 minimum for Residential and Commercial.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room at the Reno County Courthouse.

County commissioners to approve solid waste fees

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Spending at the state level still increased in the budget passed by the Kansas Legislature, according to Republican Rep. Paul Waggoner. He told Hutch Post this week that the State General Fund budget was about $9.5 billion for fiscal 2024, up from $9.1 billion in 2023.

"Part of that's driven by the Supreme Court decision on school funding," Waggoner said. "Part of that was just a number of other increases that may or may not have been avoidable. Probably, the most unavoidable one that we had, though it was only about $150 million of the total was raises for state employees. This would be corrections, this would be highway patrol, this would be just employees across the board. There have been some wage studies that showed, in certain areas in particular, Kansas really is trailing where it should be, as far as on wages, as far as to attract employees. I know, the state prison, it's been a real issue. There are things that are very legitimate."

Also, the costs of raw materials for things like road work continue to escalate, but the state's receipts are going up fast, too.

"You would think, at a certain point, you would get a little more flatness to it, or it would just strictly track inflation," Waggoner said. "Certainly, the last three or four years, it hasn't been moderated, at all."

Now, thanks to continued receipts outpacing estimates, the state has $3 billion in a rainy day fund, but preparing for an economic downturn by reducing spending hasn't been the course thus far.

"The Republican legislature basically ended up where Laura Kelly ended up," Waggoner said. "There were things of hers that we cut and other things that we added, but, at the end of the day, we were almost identical to what Laura Kelly had proposed in her State of the State speech in January."

Also, the legislature failed to override Gov. Kelly's veto of a single income tax rate proposal, because the state senate was one vote short of the required two-thirds majority.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us&nbsp;to the southwest corner of Avenue G and South Main. 

In 1909, everyone was getting cars and many companies were making them to fill the demand. On Feb. 3, 1909, there was a state charter issued for $100,000 in capital stock for the St. Joe Motor Car Co. to move from Elkhart, Indiana, to Hutchinson and start manufacturing autos. 

George White built a two-story, cement-block building along the Missouri-Pacific rail line. It was to be named the Sellers Motor Car Company after O.G. Sellers. H.C. Shoemaker was the engineer and superintendent. 

On June 12, 1909, the first cars hit the streets. They made two models, a roadster and a touring car at $1,500. The company made high-quality, 35-horsepower, four-cylinder cars with a full-floating rear axle.

The second photo shows the machining shop. 

The third photo shows the trimming department about 1910. 

The investors eventually lost their money when it closed in 1912 because they couldn't compete with eastern manufacturers (like Henry Ford's production line). 

The fourth photo shows the property today with a brick warehouse on it, owned by Midwest Iron Inc. of Kansas City, Missouri.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson recently announced the launch of the Hutch Housing Infrastructure Grant Program, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This program is designed to respond to the negative impacts on housing as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic by funding innovative and effective projects that address the housing needs of the City of Hutchinson.

In light of some confusion regarding eligibility requirements, the City of Hutchinson would like to clarify that for-profit organizations do not need to partner with non-profit organizations to apply for this grant program. For-profit organizations are encouraged to apply independently, as long as they can demonstrate how the funding will benefit residents, such as reducing housing costs.

Eligible applicants include public and private institutions, non-profit corporations (including faith-based organizations), and for-profit organizations. The City of Hutchinson welcomes applications from all eligible organizations to implement projects that would improve or increase housing stock in the community.

The official application was released on March 24, 2023, on the<a href="https://www.hutchgov.com/"> City’s website</a>. An information session was held online via Microsoft Teams on April 7, 2023. In response to the confusion around eligibility requirements, the City of Hutchinson has decided to extend the due date for applications. All applications for funding are now due by May 12, 2023, by 5:00 p.m.

Deadline for housing ARPA funds extended

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Tractor
Supply Company is hosting an antique tractor show in Hutchinson on May 13.&nbsp;

The show is planned to run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. 

It will give customers of the
Hutchinson Tractor Supply store a chance to see a full line of beautifully
restored antique tractors. 

Participating
event partners will include Great Plains Antique Tractor Club.

"Here
at Tractor Supply, we're committed to hosting community-based events that cater
to the Out Here lifestyle of our customers," Zach Lewis, manager of
the Hutchinson Tractor Supply store, said. "Whether you're a tractor enthusiast,
nostalgic farmer or interested in family-friendly activities this time of year,
our antique tractor show is sure to be a fun and informative experience." 

This
event is open to the public and will take place at 1203 N. Lorraine St.
