No TEFAP distribution this month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Celebrate those who served all day on Saturday by coming to the 16th annual Veterans Day Celebration at Moose Lodge in Hutchinson Nov. 12. The event is put together by <a href="https://www.mooseintl.org/" target="_blank">Moose Lodge</a> in conjunction with the <a href="https://www.hutchpost68.org/" target="_blank">American Legion</a>. &nbsp;

“A lot of people work on Veterans Days, so we always have it on a Saturday where everybody can make it in,”&nbsp;explained John Miller with the Moose Lodge. &nbsp;

The day will be stocked full of activities starting at 10 a.m., with the celebration ending at midnight. &nbsp;

The patriotic day will begin with a donation turkey lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. &nbsp;

A&nbsp;small ceremony to honor all veterans will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., before starting a card game fundraiser. &nbsp;

“For a month or two ahead of time, I go out and try to get sponsors for that,” said Miller. &nbsp;

The entertainment will include a service dog demonstration. &nbsp;

“Canine trainers of Hutch is going to come in and do a demonstration of their service dogs,” said Miller. “They can’t bring their dogs, because they train these dogs for a specific purpose, they train it for whatever that veteran needs. So, they’ll put on a video of what they did.” &nbsp;

The money raised from the card game and the raffle, as well as raised prior to the Veteran Celebration Day, will all go to local veteran organizations. &nbsp;

The raffle items will include items like two different quilts, and a $700 pair of diamond earrings provided by <a href="https://alexanderjewelryks.net/contact/" target="_blank">Alexander’s Jewelers</a>. &nbsp;

“Each one of the local veterans' organizations, the American Legion, two VFWS, and the KanVets all get four-hundred dollars a piece,” said Miller. “The rest will be donated to the canine trainers who train service dogs.” &nbsp;

Miller explained they pick one different organization each year to donate the leftover funds to. Last year they donated to <a href="https://www.honorflight.org/" target="_blank">Honor Flight</a>, and the prior to <a href="https://www.patrioticadvantures.com/" target="_blank">Patriotic AdVANtures</a>. &nbsp;

A dance, with musical entertainment provided by the band, Triple Play, will run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. &nbsp;

While veteran entrants are granted admission for free, non-veterans and everyone else are asked to pay a $25 donation. &nbsp;

Another ceremony to honor all veterans will be held at 9 p.m. &nbsp;

Moose Lodge hosting annual Veterans Day Celebration

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kelly Danyluk with the Reno County Veterans Memorial told Hutch Post that he is about halfway to another group of names to go on the memorial.

"Toward the end of the summer, we printed a wall that had an additional 315 names on it," Danyluk said. "Currently, I think I have about 80 names collected and I have a partial panel. When I collect about 70 more, we'll print one in the Spring. They don't like to engrave in the winter. It's too cold. They're afraid they'll crack a panel. It will be springtime before we do any more engraving."

The new names will be alphabetized per panel going forward. The original list was alphabetized throughout.

"We've got close to 14,000 names out there, memorializing our veterans from Reno County," Danyluk said. "It's either born in Reno County, or lived in Reno County for 10 years."

They are still looking for donations, particularly to keep putting up fresh flags, as the Kansas wind makes them not last very long.

"You can go online and donate at&nbsp;<a href="https://renocountyveterans.com/">https://renocountyveterans.com/</a>," Danyluk said. "There's a donate button. We'd be glad to use that money for flags, that will be an expense we will always have."

The memorial is at&nbsp;Discovery Loop in South Hutchinson near the intersection of K-96, K-61, and U.S. 50, west of the Love's truck stop.

Reno County Veterans Memorial continues to add names

PARTRIDGE, Kan. — A group of 20 kids from Reno County will be putting on the play Peter Pan Friday and Saturday night at the former Partridge Grade School at 5 West Ave. C in Partridge.

"The youngest would be eight or nine, up to probably 16 would be the oldest," said costumer and crew member Dalena Wallace. "We really wanted to involve as many as we could. Looking at scripts and trying to cast that many kids, we landed on Peter Pan and it's been really fun."

For Danny Green, who plays the boy who never grew up, he's excited to get on the stage.

"I'm a little nervous about it," Danny Green said. "Now, I'm just like, get up on stage and let's do it."

It's the first performance ever for most of the cast and the behind the scenes crew, but learning how to work together is the point of the whole thing. Danny's mom Larissa Green has been helping backstage.

"The kids are really good at encouraging one another, as well,"&nbsp;Larissa Green said. "Backstage, they are making sure they are where they are supposed to be and complimenting one another. That's been really great to see."

The curtain goes up Friday night and Saturday night at 7 p.m. There is no charge to attend.

Kids to put on Peter Pan at Partridge school this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police are investigating a shooting where a pregnant woman lost the baby and have made an arrest.

According to Hutchinson Police Lt. Dustin Loepp, Friday, November 4th at 2:40 a.m., Hutchinson Police were sent to a residence in the 500 block of East Avenue B in reference to an accidental shooting.

A 30-year-old pregnant woman was wounded in her side. The woman was taken to a Wichita hospital for treatment. As police investigated, they learned that 23-year-old River Stokely of Hutchinson was investigating a noise near the front of his residence while armed.

When he turned back into the residence, the gun was fired and the woman was wounded. The baby was pronounced dead on November 8.

On Thursday, Stokely was arrested for involuntary manslaughter. Stokely is being held at the Reno County Correctional Facility with a $10,000 bond.

The female with the gunshot wound was treated and released from the hospital and is in stable condition.

All suspects are considered innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

This case is still under investigation, and this is all the information that is being released at this time.

Man arrested after pregnant woman is shot and loses baby

Amateur photographers can submit night sky and space photos for the chance to win a Cosmosphere prize package. &nbsp;

Part of winning the prize package, and the most exciting thing of the contest, is a chance to meet with an astronaut. &nbsp;

Entrants to the Cosmosphere’s Space Photography Contest can compete for the chance to meet astronaut John Herrington, Chickasaw. &nbsp;

Herrington became the first Native American in space in 2002. &nbsp;

Awards also include Cosmosphere gift shop items. &nbsp;

Now through Nov. 27, by 11:59 p.m.,&nbsp;amateur photographers ages 16 and up can submit up to two photos taken with either a phone or a digital camera, in .jpg or .png files, and send them to <a href="mailto:photos@cosmo.org" target="_blank">photos@cosmo.org</a>. Photos must be 240 or 300 dpi. &nbsp;

The top three winners will be invited to a private meet-and-greet with Herrington on his trip to the Cosmosphere on Dec. 6. &nbsp;

Herrington will be in Hutchinson to present an in-person and livestreamed science lesson to classrooms throughout Kansas as part of Cosmosphere’s LaunchLearning education programming.&nbsp;

Space Photography Contest open through Nov. 27

Hutchinson, Kan. — The<a href="https://underkansas.org/"> Strataca Kansas’ Underground Salt Museum&nbsp;in Hutchinson, Kan.</a> is lighting up underground in preparation for their&nbsp;annual Season of Lights, starting Nov. 12. &nbsp;

Strataca will display over 100,000 lights, thousands of wrapped presents, Christmas tree lane, Gingerbread Alley, and of course, jolly ol’ Saint Nick.&nbsp;

“This is year three of Season of Lights,” said Penny Bettles, Event Coordinator for Reno County Historical Society. “it's our way to support our community through festive lights throughout the holiday season.”&nbsp;

The Season of Lights started three years ago, as a way to create a new experience for guests to come underground after the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Jonathan Ziemer, Chief Engineer, has worked diligently for months to install miles and miles of lights 650’ underground. &nbsp;

“You don’t even have to wait until it gets dark to see the Christmas lights” said Ziemer. “It’s dark all day long underground, so you can enjoy them anytime!” &nbsp;

Season of Lights will be on display beginning Saturday, Nov. 12 through Jan. 8. &nbsp;

General admission to STRATACA is required to see the lights. &nbsp;

Santa Claus will be present on Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to&nbsp;2 p.m., with fun activities inside the Event Center.&nbsp;

Strataca presenting third Season of Lights

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will look at the contract with Reece Construction Company for emergency replacement of the reinforced concrete box under Washington Street during its meeting on Tuesday.

The box on the new Washington Street bicycle boulevard between 18th and 19th is due to cost $550,795.23.

Also on Tuesday, the council will look at an agreement with WDM Architects for the completion of the Memorial Hall historic preservation and reuse plan at a cost of $43,000.

There will also be some technical changes to city code regarding driveway approaches and regular reports from the council and interim City Manager Gary Meagher.

The Hutchinson City Council will meet Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at 125 East Avenue B.

Mary Magdalene House hosting event for those dealing with grief

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas notes that the price of gas is still tough to predict from week to week.

"This week in Kansas, we are at $3.41 a gallon," Steward said. "That's up slightly, about five cents from where we were a week ago, but ten cents lower than where we were a month ago. I think this week is just indicative of what we've seen throughout basically the entire year for 2022. That's lots of fluctuations, market volatility is still the name of the game."

Area counties have quite a wide price spread, as well.&nbsp;

"Right now, there's some concerns over Russian oil production cuts and what that can mean for global supplies of oil, and thus gasoline," Steward said. "The rise could be short-lived, as there's reports of new COVID-19 restrictions in China, that could signal a potential economic slowdown for the world's top oil consuming nation."

In a pre-COVID winter, prices would have been expected to drop anyway.

"Winter months are lower demand periods for gasoline, just fewer people out driving, as the weather starts getting cold and we start dealing with winter weather, typically that's going to bring less demand for gas."

Also, the winter blend of gasoline is usually a little less expensive to refine than the cleaner burning summer blend.

AAA: Uncertainty far from Kansas having a gas price impact

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Dr. John Walker with Central Christian School said the parking lot project is coming along nicely.

"They got kind of the southeast quadrant just about complete," Walker said. "They painted the parking stalls. I'm hoping that we'll be able to open up that section of it here before too long."

The freezing weather coming in for the weekend could slow that work, but the work of fundraising for the rest of the school's capital campaign continues.

"We're always reminded of the Lord's faithfulness to provide for our school," Walker said. "We're just thankful for the generous donors who partner with our school to make that dream a reality. We've got some exciting news to share, but that won't happen until January. People are still excited about Central Christian School and giving to this and they are excited to be giving to capital improvement projects that we've got going on."

One of those projects is finishing up on the already constructed&nbsp; classrooms that the school is hoping to use for STEM education.

"The engineered plans are just about finished up," Walker said. "What all will be included in that will be a completion of four classrooms on the east wing. Then, once those are complete and we are able to move our staff over into those classrooms, then we will start our remodel process on the existing classrooms to better expand our space and better use our space."

The CCS Annual Stewardship Dinner is Saturday.

Parking lot and capital fundraising going well at CCS

Mount Hope, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced on Nov. 10, six-year-old Brooklyn Schmidt of Mount Hope is one of three south central Kansas winners in the 2022 Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day poster contest.

The contest is sponsored annually by the KDOT and other traffic safety organizations.

Brooklyn is the daughter of Jeffrey and Rachel Schmidt. She attends Andale Elementary School.

Contest winners receive a bicycle from the Kansas Turnpike Authority and a helmet from Safe Kids Kansas.

The idea of the contest is getting children to think about traffic safety and to present those ideas on posters. 

A total of 497 children in Kansas, ages five to 13, participated this year. Brooklyn won in the regional category for kids ages five to seven.

Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day is a nationwide initiative to improve traffic safety and decrease traffic deaths.

Mount Hope girl wins state traffic safety poster contest

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Debra Teufel with the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce reminds those who expressed interest in Chamber Blue to finish the process to make sure they are covered for 2023.

"Those who filled out the survey in August are eligible to enroll now in Chamber Blue," Teufel said. "That deadline is coming up. They need to get with Blue Cross and actually express that they wish to enroll by November 18th."

This health insurance offering was a statewide effort.

"Our chamber was one of over fifty chambers around the state that are taking part in Chamber Blue," Teufel said. "The whole goal was really to make an affordable health care option available to small businesses that haven't had that ability to be part of a larger pool. This gives you options. It also, hopefully, will give some rate stability and an option to be rated differently than simply by your age and demographic."

It's not going to work for everyone, and the chambers realize that, but it is another avenue for workers.

"We have had many members who have said this has been beneficial to them," Teufel said. "We've had some members that say, you know, right now, we're going to stick with what we have, but next year, there's always the option to opt in. If any of our members or businesses out there didn't take the survey this year, that doesn't mean that they can't participate next year. There will be another opportunity."

Teufel is talking about a similar timeline to this year, where rates will come out late summer or early fall of 2023 and then businesses can choose to opt in for coverage to begin in January of 2024.

Chamber Blue deadline is next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After his election as Kansas next Attorney General on Tuesday, Kris Kobach is getting ready to hit the ground running.

"I'm going to be working hard getting some of our legislative bills ready," Kobach said. "There will be several things I will be proposing and pushing for in the legislature. Among those things will be a human trafficking bill, a bill increasing the penalty for those who traffic in drugs, specifically fentanyl, when it causes someone's death. We'll be working on that in the run-up."

Once he is sworn in come January, Kobach is certain there will be federal administrative actions his office will need to pay attention to.

"We'll be scrutinizing what the Biden administration is doing, very much being on guard," Kobach said. "I anticipate that the Biden administration will resort to even more executive orders that are on thin legal ice that may need to be challenged by the attorneys general of the states. Kansas will be leading that charge."

Though the balance of Congress is still in doubt, it is clear that the path to legislative change will likely be more difficult for the President, though maybe not as hard as was thought prior to Tuesday.

"We can remember what Barack Obama did when he lost Congress in 2010," Kobach said. "That's when he started just going crazy with executive orders and doing everything with his famous phrase of his phone and his pen. If Biden follows that course, it's going to be so important for attorneys general to be pushing back, because chances are what he does will be illegal."

Kobach cited the example of the student loan forgiveness program released this fall, which attorneys general from Republican states have argued violates the separation of powers as spending federal money is supposed to be the purview of Congress.

Kobach: Working on legislative agenda, watching Biden administration

NICKERSON, Kan. — Ava Jones of Nickerson is forging ahead with her future, after signing her National Letter of Intent (NIL) to play basketball at the University of Iowa on Nov. 9. &nbsp; After a&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4372734a-0749-4449-9c40-eac73419a478" target="_blank">life-changing crash in Louisville, Ky.</a>&nbsp;left Ava and her mother, Amy, in critical condition and killed her father, Trey, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/cc44097f-ed08-4907-8a55-7cac2e09863f" target="_blank">the University of Iowa previously stated Ava would keep her scholarship</a> whether or not she would be able to play basketball. &nbsp;

Ava Jones was not alone by any means as she signed her&nbsp;NIL, surrounded and supported by family, friends, and coaches who saw her basketball career nearly, and wrongfully, stolen from her. &nbsp;

“To my family, my dad, my mom, and my brothers, and then all my grandparents,” said Ava. “I love them all so much. Thank you for everything you have done for me.” &nbsp;

The emotional signing culminated in Ava thanking the people of Nickerson for their support. &nbsp;

“To the community of Nickerson, it has not been easy,” expressed Ava. “I mean for my family, but it’s just unexplainable how grateful I am of&nbsp;you and the things that they have done, Nickerson, for my family and I, is&nbsp;incredible.” &nbsp;

 After the signing, Ava said she had not doubt she would be able to sign. &nbsp;

“It feels real now,” said Ava. “I mean it did before, but now it feels really real, like I am going to go to Iowa and be a Hawkeye.” &nbsp;

Ava will be part of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team in a managerial capacity as she continues to recover. &nbsp;

According to Ava, she could be practicing with the team in one to two years. &nbsp;

“A person wouldn’t be able to do this on two torn ACLs and I don’t know if I’ll be able to yet,” said Ava. &nbsp;

Despite this, Ava said she is not worried because she knows who her surgeon is. The thing she is&nbsp;most excited about is being able to walk again after her surgeries. &nbsp;

Ava’s future surgeries include both of her knees in separate operations, as well as her shoulder. Operation on her right knee is planned for Nov. 21. &nbsp;

“I am so happy that she is seeing her dream to fruition,” said Amy Jones.&nbsp;

Amy, like most parents when their kids move away, admits she'll worry about her daughter. Especially after what their family has gone through.

After she has recovered from the surgeries that she still needs, Amy said she will visit Ava in Iowa as soon as she can.&nbsp;

“She keeps me motivated to keep pushing and keep working hard,” said Amy. “I just hope she enjoys college, whether she plays basketball or not, like she makes friends and gets acclimated.” &nbsp;

During her time at the University of Iowa, Ava is going to major in communications. &nbsp;

Ava said she is going to take a lot of hope with her to Iowa from the community of Nickerson. &nbsp;

“This town is just full of hope, and this community is just so full of excitement,” said Ava. “I’m going to be excited to go to Iowa.” &nbsp;

For her future in recovery, Ava said she is going to do whatever the coaches tell her to do so she can get on the basketball court. &nbsp;

Ava wants people who hear her story to remember to keep pushing. &nbsp;

 </figure> NICKERSON, Kan. — Ava Jones of Nickerson is forging ahead with her future, after signing her National Letter of Intent (NIL) to play basketball at the University of Iowa on Nov. 9. &nbsp; After a&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4372734a-0749-4449-9c40-eac73419a478" target="_blank">life-changing crash in Louisville, Ky.</a>&nbsp;left Ava and her mother, Amy, in critical condition and killed her father, Trey, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/cc44097f-ed08-4907-8a55-7cac2e09863f" target="_blank">the University of Iowa previously stated Ava would keep her scholarship</a> whether or not she would be able to play basketball. &nbsp;Ava Jones was not alone by any means as she signed her&nbsp;NIL, surrounded and supported by family, friends, and coaches who saw her basketball career nearly, and wrongfully, stolen from her. &nbsp;“To my family, my dad, my mom, and my brothers, and then all my grandparents,” said Ava. “I love them all so much. Thank you for everything you have done for me.” &nbsp;The emotional signing culminated in Ava thanking the people of Nickerson for their support. &nbsp;“To the community of Nickerson, it has not been easy,” expressed Ava. “I mean for my family, but it’s just unexplainable how grateful I am of&nbsp;you and the things that they have done, Nickerson, for my family and I, is&nbsp;incredible.” &nbsp; After the signing, Ava said she had not doubt she would be able to sign. &nbsp;“It feels real now,” said Ava. “I mean it did before, but now it feels really real, like I am going to go to Iowa and be a Hawkeye.” &nbsp;Ava will be part of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team in a managerial capacity as she continues to recover. &nbsp;According to Ava, she could be practicing with the team in one to two years. &nbsp;“A person wouldn’t be able to do this on two torn ACLs and I don’t know if I’ll be able to yet,” said Ava. &nbsp;Despite this, Ava said she is not worried because she knows who her surgeon is. The thing she is&nbsp;most excited about is being able to walk again after her surgeries. &nbsp;Ava’s future surgeries include both of her knees in separate operations, as well as her shoulder. Operation on her right knee is planned for Nov. 21. &nbsp;“I am so happy that she is seeing her dream to fruition,” said Amy Jones.&nbsp;Amy, like most parents when their kids move away, admits she'll worry about her daughter. Ava Jones Signs with University of Iowa 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On November 6th at 10:00 a.m, a water line break was reported in the 400 block of West 17th Ave. The break was on a ¾” copper service line, which was excavated and replaced.

This road damage caused by the water line break has required closure of the east bound lane on W 17th Ave from N Monroe St to N Madison St. 

The street repair has been turned over to a contractor who plans to begin the work on Thursday. The lane is expected to be opened by the end of the day on Monday the 14th.

RENO COUNTY — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Health Advisory because of increasing emergency department visits for children due to respiratory viruses including COVID-19, RSV, and influenza in Kansas and nationally.

The Reno County Health Department wants to remind people it is not too late to get vaccinated.

Vaccines for flu and COVID-19 can be administered at the same time. The CDC recommends vaccination against influenza and COVID-19 to all eligible people aged six months and older who are not up to date.

There are other measures patients can take to prevent respiratory viruses.

• Stay home if they are sick and stay away from others who appear ill.

• Practice good cough etiquette (turn head away from others, cough into your arm or a tissue, then discard the tissue)!

• Keep your hands clean! – wash your hands frequently (20 seconds with soap and water) especially after coughing or touching high touch services.

• Clean high touch surfaces often, like doorknobs, car handles, phones and keys.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Mask up if levels of respiratory illness are high – especially if your child has a chronic illness.

• Seek medical care EARLY to get the most benefit from antiviral treatment options for influenza and COVID-19.

• Don’t take antibiotics that are left over or are given by a friend or family member. These will not help with viral infections and may cause side effects.

The Reno County Health Department is administering flu and COVID-19 vaccines during their normal operating hours. Walk-ins are accepted for ages 12 and over, but appointments are required for children 11 years or younger. To set an appointment, call 620-694-2900.
