NEWTON, Kan. —The City of Newton is heartbroken to announce the passing of retired Police Service Dog (PSD) Bella.
PSD Bella passed away peacefully at the age of 9 on June 27, 2023, after a sudden medical emergency. PSD Bella began her career with Newton Police in 2015. She was a certified patrol and narcotics detection K-9 that served in the patrol division with her handler, Sgt. Tony Hawpe. PSD Bella retired in January 2023 as Sgt. Hawpe transitioned into the Investigations Division.
PSD Bella had a successful and decorated career. She had a positive impact not only on patrol but during many public demonstrations and community events. She was a social media darling on her Facebook page (Cpl. Hawpe and K-9 Bella).
The City would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Newton Animal Hospital staff and Dr. Tonn for their great attention and comforting care for PSD Bella in her greatest time of need. PSD Bella served the citizens of Newton and the state of Kansas honorably and will be missed by her family and law enforcement family.
