HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Boys &amp; Girls Clubs are seeking input on after school and youth services options in Hutchinson.

"We're talking to donors, board members, our staff members, parents," said Lindsey Fields with the Club. "We're also wanting to hear from the public about how they perceive youth need in our community and how they perceive youth themselves, as well as the Boys and Girls Club, because, as you know, perception is reality."

The survey is open to adults and youth, and to any community members whether they have children or not.

"When we form our new strategic plan, we want to make sure that we're just not relying on anecdata," Fields said. "We want to actually hear from the folks in our community about what they need for their kids, if they find the programs here are not meeting their needs, there are not enough of them, or if they're not high quality. We want to hear about the Club itself."

The survey should take 5 to 7 minutes to complete. All answers will be anonymous.

"Where do we need to focus?" asked Lance Patterson, CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson. "Do we need to really look at homework help, or maybe it's social emotional learning. What are those areas that the community sees as being a need and something that we also do well."

Boys & Girls Clubs conducting June survey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Stage 9’s production of Quilters by Molly Newman and Barbara Danashek will play June 8-10 at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a single weekend of performances instead of the originally planned two.

"Each little scene is introduced with the block that's part of the quilt," said Paula Rothe, who plays Sarah in the show. "It's quite different in that it's not a story that goes on and on for the hour. It's just little vignettes of different aspects in this woman's life, Sarah."

Quilters was written by two Colorado women using seven actresses to tell the stories. The stories are based on the actual experiences of pioneer women through their journals and letters as they came west to Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, etc. The show is told through the quilt blocks and quilts that brought women together then and now. This is a show for adults.

"It's more of an adult production, because of subject matter, not because of language," said director Kris Anshutz with Stage 9. "Children die in it."

Rothe and the rest of the ensemble play many parts from children to adults. The ensemble includes Piper Harding, Diana Kiuttu, Sarah Winkler, Caroline Miller, Jo Stropes and Mallory Teufel and the musical parts are challenging.

"The women in it have just done a lovely job of being able to sing in a small ensemble setting," Rothe said.

Quilters is directed by Kris Anshutz with musical direction by Bill Anshutz. Lori Henks provides the music. 

The quilt blocks and Legacy Quilt is designed by Deb Nikkel with the design brought to life by Karna Lackey of Sew In 2 Quilts. The blocks are being made by various quilters in the area.

Quilters will be June 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. with the box office opening at 6:30 and seating happening at 7:00 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In light of the continued child care shortage in Reno County, it is important to note when existing programs attempt to provide more services.

According to a social media post last week, Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson is doing just that.&nbsp;

The church said their preschool program is expanding in the fall and offering full day, year round, child care to the already existing preschool.

This means, one low cost to families for a safe, caring child care environment and a long standing, experienced preschool program  at the same time.&nbsp;

Trinity United Methodist expanding preschool offerings

HAVEN, Kan. — The Summer Lunch program for Haven USD 312 started Monday.

Lunches will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday between June 5 and July 27, except for July 4.

Lunches will be available at Haven Grade School, Yoder Charter School and the Mt. Hope Pool.

These are grab and go meals for children ages 1-18.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre is excited to announce the lineup we have in store for the 2023-2024 live season. 2023-2024 Fox Theatre Live Season Subscription Series

For over 55 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. “We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968 and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.”

2023-2024 Fox Theatre Live Season announced

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cancer Council of Reno County is accepting donations for the 2023 CCRC Purse Auction.

The Council is looking for totes, clutches, backpacks, beach bags, children’s bags, suitcases, duffels, designer bags, briefcases, golf bags, wristlets, coolers and diaper bags.

You can drop off bags at the following locations:

CCRC Office at 719 W 4th Ave. in Hutchinson 

Absolutely Flowers at 1328 N Main St. Monday through Friday  8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hutch Chamber Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

RCB Bank: 700 E 30th Ave. Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CCRC accepting donations for purse auction

I recently returned home to Kansas after traveling to China to participate in a U.S. Sorghum trade mission. The trip was organized by the U.S. Grains Council, and we were the first U.S. trade mission team into China since the pandemic.

It was a whirlwind – our team’s daily schedule consisted of reengaging with past sorghum buyers as well as meeting with potential customers throughout four cities throughout south China. 

Our team traveled by way of planes, trains and automobiles while moving throughout the country. While our world has been back to “business as usual” for some time following the pandemic, China is still slowly re-entering that space.

There were very few foreigners and much of the tour groups we crossed paths with in public spaces were domestic. 

Our days were filled with very official meetings in large office buildings. Our team entered a conference room and sat at a large rectangular table directly across from the Chinese team. We had name placards and business cards. The mood was quite serious. During these meetings – sometimes through translators – we’d discuss the U.S. sorghum crop, transportation logistics, weather concerns, producer concerns and market opportunities. There was no doubt that these meetings were all business.

But following each meeting a major shift in the atmosphere would always occur. Our groups would leave the conference room and gather together again within a spacious dining room, which always consisted of a large round table. Our two unique teams would sit shoulder to shoulder and partake in food and drink together. We were no longer looking across a table to our counterparts. Instead, we were sitting beside them as warmly welcomed guests.

The stark contrast between the business meetings and the meals struck me. Time and time again as our meal host would serve a piece of fish, tofu, goose or something new and exotic to me. It was very apparent we were not just sharing a meal together but also nurturing established or building on newly created relationships. 

It took a round table and food to bring our teams together. It took a round table and food to have candid conversations about our families, our hobbies and our ways of life. It took a round table and food to minimize the barriers that tend to set us all apart.

There is no doubt relationships matter. Many of the relationships that have been developed with our Chinese sorghum buyers have been works in progress by groups like ours within the U.S. agriculture industry over many, many years.

It’s also glaringly apparent our governments are not on good terms currently. Tensions are high and trust is lacking.  

But we share common ground when it comes to food. Afterall, food is what allowed our trade mission team to enter into China in the first place. Food was the topic of our meetings. And it was while enjoying food together that allowed us to grow and nurture relationships that will benefit us all.

If only more of us – both domestic and abroad – were willing to gather around, shoulder to shoulder at a round table while enjoying food together. What a world it could be.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— The Reno County Extension Master Gardeners are hosting a Garden Fair Saturday, June 10 at the demonstration garden on the Hutchinson Community College campus.&nbsp;

There will be educational booths, garden vendors, garden craft sales, food trucks and a garden garage sale.

TOPEKA, Kan.—&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland on Monday announced the recipients of the spring 2023 Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) grants. A total of 17 projects from across the state are receiving nearly $918,000 in matching grant funds.

City of Halstead, Harvey County - $64,300 City of Sterling, Rice County - $75,000 South Central KS Economic Development District, Reno County - $75,000

The Patterson Family Foundation and Department of Commerce paired up to provide grant funding to assist rural communities in revitalizing underutilized and dilapidated downtown buildings and turn them into economic drivers in the community. A total of 30 applications were received during the spring HEAL grant round.

“Downtowns throughout rural Kansas act as the front doors to their communities,” Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland said. “Through our valued relationship with the Patterson Family Foundation, we are helping to make these districts more economically viable and productive.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—&nbsp;This week is Plant Week at the Hutchinson Public Library.

Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to noon is an Author Talk with Tommy Clarkson on The Medicinal Jungle in the Hutchinson Public Library Auditorium. Clarkson is a former Hutchinson resident and world traveler. During his time in Hutchinson he was a city commissioner, and later, mayor. He spent three years in the military and government service in Southeast Asia, and Iraq. After which, he continued his travels before making Ola Brisa Gardens in Manzanillo, Mexico his home.

Clarkson is looking forward to returning to his home state of Kansas and sharing his 4 newest books, including "The Medicinal Jungle", with his former Hutchinson community.

Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. is a Kansas Native Plants Lunch &amp; Learn in the Hutchinson Public Library Auditorium. Bring your lunch and enjoy a lunch hour discussion about Kansas native plants. Plant week ongoing at Hutchinson Public Library

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Jon Richardson is looking forward to the airport stakeholders meeting Tuesday at 5:3o p.m. to hopefully get a plan that can be acted upon soon.

"We've got a lot of information from this consultant that we worked with in regard to economic development at the airport," Richardson said. "It's important also, people that are already at the airport have ideas, too. We're looking for, what's the easiest, lowest hanging fruit? What's the least risk, most reward, least cost, most benefit type approach to developing the airport, at least starting out."

Whether to keep the airport's current footprint as is or try to do additional development of the land is one topic that the consultant mentioned in his report.

"There's two things," Richardson said. "One, what is currently being utilized to the best extent, but also, if we're going to differentiate ourselves from other airports in Kansas, do we need to keep some of these amenities for future growth, or can we see it as part of our plan for developing the airport?"

Airport stakeholders meeting Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— According to the job posting from <a href="https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/bakertilly/jobs/4064507-0/city-manager-hutchinson-kansas">governmentjobs.com</a>, the permanent City Manager search in the Salt City will be taking applications for at least a month.

The listing says that application review will begin on July 6, 2023 and gives the compensation range for the job at&nbsp; $165,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually.

Current Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements recently approved interim contract was for $6730.77 every two weeks. Over 26 pay periods, that equals $175,000 a year.

According to the job posting, qualified candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Public Administration, or other closely related field. 

A closely related master’s degree, and International City Manager Association Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM), and Center for Community and Economic Development (CCED) or similar certifications are desired. 

Candidates should possess a minimum of ten (10) years professional experience with a minimum of five (5) years senior management in a public, private, or nonprofit entity of similar size and complexity of operations. 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills will be considered. The future Hutchinson City Manager will be required to reside within City limits.

The city is using consultant <a href="mailto:Art.Davis@Bakertilly.com">Art Davis from Baker Tilly</a> in the search and the listing says Baker Tilly will continue to&nbsp;accept applications until the City extends an offer to one finalist.

The process requires the expressed authorization by an applicant to conduct comprehensive background, reference and credit checks, and an academic verification.

Permanent city manager applications being taken now

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The City of Newton proudly announced that a Newton Police Department officer Austin Sontag and K-9 Kilo recently completed the&nbsp;Utah POST/PSP Certification.

The program is based on the world-renowned North Rhine-Westphalia State Police School for Service Dog Handlers.&nbsp;The program has evolved over the last 90 years to what is commonly known today as the Utah POST/PSP Certification. 

The program is physically and mentally demanding, and is 12+ weeks of intense training. 

Each day begins with a run with the dog, and includes multiple written tests and term papers. 

Along with the obvious drug odor work and all disciplines in patrol work, Officer Sontag learned K-9 psychology, first aid, case law and a multitude of other topics. 

The training was held in the Wichita area, including several days of training in the Newton and Harvey County area.&nbsp;The instructors were from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.&nbsp;

Officer Sontag and K-9 Kilo received grades of almost all two's in all disciplines.&nbsp;The grading system is on a scale from one to six, with one being perfect. 

The grading is very tough, and both the handler and dog are graded and scrutinized on their skills and ability to work together. Very few ones are ever earned. 

The City of Newton is excited to get both of them back on the street in their community. &nbsp;

Newton police officer and K-9 partner complete training

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas reminds everyone that the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a season of increased risk, especially for teen drivers, on the roadways, making the summer days the 100 Deadliest Days of the year.

"There is a lot of unstructured time for teen drivers," Steward said. "They are not in school. They are out having fun with their friends, maybe going to summer jobs, spending a lot more time driving at night than they do during the school year, which can be a risky element."

The numbers of people killed in crashes involving teens during the summer is significant.

"In Kansas, 105 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days in a ten-year period from 2012 to 2021," Steward said. "That represents 34% of all vehicle crash fatalities during that time period."&nbsp;

AAA: Teen drivers should focus on task during '100 Deadliest Days'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Landmarks Commission on Tuesday will look at a draft of a letter to ADM proposing that when Elevator B in Hutchinson is no longer usable, that it be turned into a museum.

According to agenda documents, the commission plans to send a letter under the name of chairman Joel Haag to ADM.

The letter says that the original part of Elevator B was built in 1919-1920 and has historical significance to the grain handling industry, as well as to the City of Hutchinson. 

"Before a decision is made concerning the future of this landmark, we would appreciate an opportunity to explore with ADM options to re-purpose Elevator B into a tribute to the grain handling and telling the story of the grain processing industry over the last century," the commission wrote.

The commission believes that ADM would incur a significant expense to raze a concrete terminal grain elevator. 

"History shows that there was a refinery just west of the Elevator when it was built over 100 years ago," the letter says. "The environmental clean-up costs before the site could be developed for another use would also need to be considered."

The commission would like to explore with ADM the adaptive re-use of the property as a unique interactive attraction that would facilitate people learning about grain elevators.

The commission says this particular elevator is a very good prospect to be re-purposed as a museum/attraction because it has a full sized headhouse with a freight elevator, allowing space for a passenger elevator to take visitors to the upper levels.
