HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gas prices are still well below last year's records, even as the summer driving season heats up.

"Right now, we're at $3.26 a gallon on average in Kansas," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "That's exactly where we were a week ago. Right before the Memorial Day weekend, we saw a bit of a jump both in Kansas and nationally. We saw a surge in demand, people filling up their tanks to head out on those Memorial Day weekend road trips."

Steward said that the fundamentals have helped to slow down the traditional seasonal rise in prices.

"What's been kind of balancing that is that crude oil has been fairly stable and fairly low in price recently," Steward said."I looked today and we're around $67 to $68 a barrel, which is lower than it has been in recent weeks. We've been in the low 70s."

Crude oil generally makes up slightly more than half of the base price of a gallon of gasoline at the pump.

As of Thursday, local counties were still mostly below the state average.

"We reached our all time record high gas price, both in Kansas and nationally in the middle of June," Steward said. "We were on that path headed up to those records. A year ago, we were at $4.19 a gallon in Kansas, so 93 cents more. Nationally, we were at $4.67, which is $1.10 higher than what the national average is."

Barring a series of supply shortening events, Steward does not expect prices to get anywhere near those records this summer.

RENO COUNTY — According to Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager, only Fairfield USD 310 has enough school board candidates to need to narrow the list down in August.

"There are currently 13 candidates in USD 310 and the primary will narrow it down to 8 in November’s election," Fager said. "The USD 310 School District also spans into Pratt and Stafford Counties."

Piantek was named the 2023 “Best of Breads” champion during the virtual NFOB event on June 1, 2023. In addition to her overall crown, Piantek also won the People’s Choice award, based on online votes from across the country.&nbsp;The virtual event also announced Michele Kusma of Columbus, Ohio, as the winner of the random drawing for a Kitchen Aid Mixer.&nbsp;

KHP: Semi on fire, traffic slow on Interstate 135

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Prescribed Fire Council is partnering with Reno County Emergency Management, KSU Extension, USDA NRCS and the Kansas Forest Service for training sessions on managing brush piles.

The start time on Thursday, June 8 is 6:30 p.m. and the seminar will be going until approximately 8:00 p.m. at the Hutchinson Fire Department Training Center at 3201 East 4th&nbsp;Ave. in Hutchinson.&nbsp; 

The seminar will have indoor sessions covering Reno County burn regulations, properly preparing and burning brush piles, and making your home fire wise.&nbsp; 

On June 9th, with a start time of 8:30 a.m. at 10800 East Ave. G, Burrton, KS 67020, there will be outdoor sessions on brush pile planning, preparation, and ignitions of brush piles (weather permitting), property enhancement after a wildfire, prescribed burn planning and windbreak renovation after a wildfire.

This educational event is for homeowners and landowners in Reno, Rice and Harvey County.&nbsp; The primary focus will be land management in the Sandhills area.&nbsp; The Sandhills area in Kansas stretches approximately three miles east of Saxman, Kansas through the Highlands, across the north side of Hutchinson to approximately six miles NE of Burrton, Kansas.&nbsp; 

The Sandhills area covers approximately 114,000 acres.&nbsp; Since 2016, ten large wildfires in the Sandhills area have been recorded burning&nbsp;43,331 acres.

With the changing landscape in the Sandhills area which is primarily vegetation changes from native grasslands to an increasing volume of shrub / red cedar trees coupled with the number of properties and homes in this area, land management and wildfire risk reduction is necessary.&nbsp; 

This educational event will focus on both land management and wildfire risk reduction.&nbsp; On the land management side, information will be presented on preparing and steps needed for burning brush piles created, property wildfire recovery and information about prescribed burn planning.&nbsp; This educational event will also focus on steps to reduce wildfire risk around homes, or being fire wise.

Participants can choose to attend either or both segments.&nbsp; There is no cost for this educational event.

StartUp Hutch Receives entrepreneurship ecosystem award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Council of the Knights of Columbus has donated $71,000 to eight pregnancy centers throughout Kansas. 

The donations were raised at the 122nd Annual Kansas Knights of Columbus State Convention, where $61,000 was raised or pledged to support the Aid and Support After Pregnancy Program (ASAP), an initiative to help moms and their new babies. The first $50,000 donated will be matched by a 20% grant from the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council in New Haven, CT.

The Knights’ ASAP initiative will enhance the significant resources the Knights and local councils already provide to mothers and their children, both born and unborn. 

Donations were allocated to two pregnancy resource centers in each of the four Catholic Dioceses of Kansas. Centers receiving grants of $8,875, included Mary's Choices, Topeka, KS; Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic, Kansas City, KS; Pregnancy and Family Care, Iola, KS; Open Door Pregnancy Center, Hutchinson, KS; Life Choices Ministries, Manhattan, KS Hope's Place, Sherman County Regional Pregnancy Support Center, Goodland, KS; Birthright of Great Bend, Great Bend, KS; and Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas, Dodge City, KS.

“These centers are often the lifeline new mothers and their babies need, offering vital support when needed the most”, noted Michael Grothoff, State Deputy for the Kansas Knights of Columbus. Grothoff noted that, “often these centers operate on funding from local sources alone and over 80% of centers receive no government funding.”

By the very nature of their founding, Knights of Columbus members are called to care for the widow and orphan. The Knights of Columbus believe in the dignity and worth of every human life, and work tirelessly, through prayer and action, to support mothers and their children. In 2021, Knights of Columbus donated $4.6 million and 469,000 volunteer hours to pregnancy centers and maternity homes, providing maternity and baby clothes, diapers, food and other items to women and children.

Founded in 1882 to assist working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, today the approximately two million members of the Knights put their faith into action through a broad range of charitable causes locally, nationally, and internationally through financial contributions and hands-on service. HARVEY COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) with the help of federal, state, and local law enforcement, arrested a man following a lengthy multi-state investigation into ATM theft at colleges and universities.

On Thursday, June 1, at approximately 11 a.m., Michael W. Friess, 38, of Wichita, was arrested after surrendering to KBI agents and KHP troopers. He was booked into the Harvey County Jail on multiple arrest warrants.

Between December 2022 and February 2023, the KBI investigated thefts involving a suspect who broke into Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) located on college campuses and stole the money they contained. The thefts occurred at campuses in several Kansas counties. The same suspect also broke into rural fire departments and stole lifesaving rescue equipment.

As a result of the collaborative efforts of numerous agencies, a suspect was identified. Law enforcement agencies participating in this case were: the Park City Police Department, North Newton Police Department, Hesston Police Department, Concordia Police Department, Baldwin City Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Labette County Sheriff’s Office, Lindsborg Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Police Department, Wichita State University Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Oklahoma State University Police Department, Tonkawa Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The McPherson County Attorney’s Office, Harvey County Attorney’s Office, Cloud County Attorney’s Office, Shawnee County Attorney’s Office, Douglas County Attorney’s Office and the Labette County Attorney’s Office also assisted.

Friess was arrested for charges in the following arrest warrants:

Cloud County – Burglary, criminal damage to property (value of more than $25,000), theft (value of $1,500 to $25,000)

Shawnee County – Burglary (non-residential), theft (value $1,500 to $25,000)

Harvey County- Aggravated criminal damage to property, two counts of burglary (non-residential), theft of property/services (value of $1,500 to $25,000), criminal damage to property (value of less than $1,000)

McPherson County- Two counts of criminal damage to property (value $1,500 to $25,000), burglary (non-residential)

Friess is also facing multiple criminal charges in Oklahoma, and additional charges are expected.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation is ongoing.

 </figure>Kansas Bureau of InvestigationHARVEY COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) with the help of federal, state, and local law enforcement, arrested a man following a lengthy multi-state investigation into ATM theft at colleges and universities.On Thursday, June 1, at approximately 11 a.m., Michael W. Friess, 38, of Wichita, was arrested after surrendering to KBI agents and KHP troopers. He was booked into the Harvey County Jail on multiple arrest warrants.Between December 2022 and February 2023, the KBI investigated thefts involving a suspect who broke into Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) located on college campuses and stole the money they contained. The thefts occurred at campuses in several Kansas counties. The same suspect also broke into rural fire departments and stole lifesaving rescue equipment.As a result of the collaborative efforts of numerous agencies, a suspect was identified. Law enforcement agencies participating in this case were: the Park City Police Department, North Newton Police Department, Hesston Police Department, Concordia Police Department, Baldwin City Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Labette County Sheriff’s Office, Lindsborg Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Police Department, Wichita State University Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Oklahoma State University Police Department, Tonkawa Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Wichita man arrested for alleged ATM theft in several Kansas counties

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;This year’s Salt City Fest, hosted by <a href="https://saltcitybrewing.com/" target="_blank">Salt City Brewing</a>, not just adds an extra day of festivities, but also an extra block to party on June 2 and June 3. &nbsp;

Steven Petermann, owner and managing member of Salt City Brewing Co., is excited about Salt City Fest’s growth. &nbsp;

"In the past, what we've done is simply a one-night block party, where we have bands come in and a beer garden, and we decided we wanted to make this more of a community, family, and kids event. So,&nbsp;we have added another block," Petermann said. "We now go from the 400 and 500 block of North&nbsp;Main Street in Hutchinson, and the 400 block will be filled with family events."&nbsp;

The events and activities on the 400 block side of Main Street will include bounce house, dunk tank, water slides, a treasure dig where children dig for quarters, a kids’ duck pond, ice cream, face-painting, and more. &nbsp;

Meat will be made available to contestants on Friday, June 2, at 8 p.m.&nbsp;

Tasting and judging will occur from noon to 1 p.m.&nbsp;on Saturday. There will be a $10 tasting fee, providing a taste from all entrants for both meats, for the public, which includes a ballot to vote on the best of each. The $10 tasting fee will also go into the prize pool.&nbsp;

Prizes for each meat will be awarded with the prize pool divided equally for the pork butt and ribs,&nbsp; and will be paid as follows: &nbsp;

There will also be a corn hole tournament at 2 p.m. on Saturday. 

Then people can test their mettle by challenging a mechanical bull from 6 p.m. to midnight. &nbsp;

Salt City Fest is a bigger celebration in 2023

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council will convene a special meeting for the purpose of negotiating a contract with a city administrator candidate and to approve that contract Friday.&nbsp;

The City Council is expected to reconvene from an executive session and then vote in public to approve the contract.

Also on that agenda is the resignation of South Hutchinson city council member Jeff Schenk, who has been employed in the engineering department with the City of Hutchinson.

The remainder of the council will then hold an executive session to hammer out the new city administrator's contract and then approve that agreement.

The meeting will be Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the South Hutchinson city offices at 2 South Main.

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — According to the Evergy Outage Map, as of 1 p.m. Thursday, over 400 customers were without power from points just to the south of South Hutchinson down to Yoder.

Complete restoration is estimated later this afternoon, but the majority of customers were restored just after 2 p.m.

Yoder area without power Thursday

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — The 19th Annual Black Kettle Festival and Car Show kicks off on Friday, June 2. &nbsp;

Friday’s festivities will begin with the Foam Zone Party from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Moundridge Public Library, celebrating the first day of their Summer Reading Program season. &nbsp;

Then at Black Kettle Park, the Dridge Dash hosted by the Moundridge Recreation Commission will run from 5:45 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a community dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs by the Bradbury Company following at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. &nbsp;

Additionally, Chill will provide frozen refreshments in the evening, and Open Block Venue will be open for concessions and drinks. &nbsp;

Starting at 7 p.m., a BBQ Contest, hosted by the Moundridge Lion’s Club, will take place at the Moundridge Swimming Pool. Starting at the same time, and until 11 p.m., a street dance with Sam Shilts, Landon Unruh, and Nikki Moddelmog opening for the Gus Burns Band will take over the evening. &nbsp;

Friday’s event will cap off with the Moundridge Mile, starting at local restaurant, The Hub, and&nbsp;hosted by the Moundridge Recreation Commission. &nbsp;

Saturday’s full day of activities will start at 7 a.m. with a Fly-In at the Moundridge Municipal Airport, and a breakfast hosted by Southwind Global Aviation. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Registration will open at 7 a.m. for the 19th Annual Black Kettle Car Show at Wheatridge Park. Entries must be registered by 10 a.m.&nbsp;The car show will run until about 2 p.m. and will feature live DJ entertainment, door prizes, raffles, food vendors, and more. &nbsp;

Vendors will include Meat Rubbers BBQ, Moundridge Lion’s Club BBQ, A beer garden by The Hub, and homemade ice cream by Dennis Friesen.&nbsp;

At 7:30 a.m., Moundridge Recreation Commission will be hosting the Ridge Run, starting at the West Zion Church parking lot. &nbsp;

Also, in the West Zion Church parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon will be a farmers market. &nbsp;

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Opera Block Venue, people can check out a pop-up vendor event. &nbsp;

The parade will line up at 9 a.m. at the Wollman Addition, and at 10 a.m. will proceed south on Christian Avenue to Krehbiel Street.&nbsp;

Concurrently with the parade at 10 a.m., a BBQ contest and the People’s Choice Award will take place at the Moundridge Swimming Pool. Same place, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., pulled pork sandwiches and sides will be served. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Families can take their kids to fly kites at the soccer field south of the tennis courts at 10:30 a.m. Kites will be provided. &nbsp;

11 a.m. Saturday will see both a corn hole tournament and pickleball tournament. The corn hole tournament, sponsored by Nex-Tech, is $20 per team and will take place at Wheatridge Park. &nbsp;

The pickleball tournament, sponsored by Moundridge EMS, is $15 per person and will take place at the tennis courts across from the Moundridge City Pool. &nbsp;

The West Zion Church will hold a chalupa lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. &nbsp;

Moundridge FFA will have a variety of events at Wheatridge Park, including kids carnival games, a dunk tank, and other activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. &nbsp;

Also from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Cradle to Crayons will have monster-sized fun with monster cookies, monster art, and monster raffles at Wheatridge Park. There will also be kid tattoos, fun with colored hair, and a book walk. &nbsp;

At the same time at Wheatridge Park, the Moundridge Fire Department will have Firemen’s Games.&nbsp;

Starting at the same time, and until 11 p.m., a street dance with Sam Shilts, Landon Unruh, and Nikki Moddelmog opening for the Gus Burns Band will take over the evening. &nbsp;Friday’s event will cap off with the Moundridge Mile, starting at local restaurant, The Hub, and&nbsp;hosted by the Moundridge Recreation Commission. &nbsp;Saturday’s full day of activities will start at 7 a.m. with a Fly-In at the Moundridge Municipal Airport, and a breakfast hosted by Southwind Global Aviation. &nbsp;&nbsp;Registration will open at 7 a.m. for the 19th Annual Black Kettle Car Show at Wheatridge Park. Entries must be registered by 10 a.m.&nbsp;The car show will run until about 2 p.m. and will feature live DJ entertainment, door prizes, raffles, food vendors, and more. &nbsp;Vendors will include Meat Rubbers BBQ, Moundridge Lion’s Club BBQ, A beer garden by The Hub, and homemade ice cream by Dennis Friesen.&nbsp;At 7:30 a.m., Moundridge Recreation Commission will be hosting the Ridge Run, starting at the West Zion Church parking lot. &nbsp;Also, in the West Zion Church parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon will be a farmers market. &nbsp;From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Opera Block Venue, people can check out a pop-up vendor event. &nbsp;The parade will line up at 9 a.m. at the Wollman Addition, and at 10 a.m. will proceed south on Christian Avenue to Krehbiel Street.&nbsp;Concurrently with the parade at 10 a.m., a BBQ contest and the People’s Choice Award will take place at the Moundridge Swimming Pool. Same place, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., pulled pork sandwiches and sides will be served. &nbsp;&nbsp;Families can take their kids to fly kites at the soccer field south of the tennis courts at 10:30 a.m. Kites will be provided. &nbsp;11 a.m. Saturday will see both a corn hole tournament and pickleball tournament. The corn hole tournament, sponsored by Nex-Tech, is $20 per team and will take place at Wheatridge Park. &nbsp;The pickleball tournament, sponsored by Moundridge EMS, is $15 per person and will take place at the tennis courts across from the Moundridge City Pool. &nbsp;The West Zion Church will hold a chalupa lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. &nbsp;Moundridge FFA will have a variety of events at Wheatridge Park, including kids carnival games, a dunk tank, and other activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. &nbsp;Also from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Cradle to Crayons will have monster-sized fun with monster cookies, monster art, and monster raffles at Wheatridge Park. Black Kettle Days this weekend in Moundridge

COMANCHE COUNTY—A Hutchinson man died in an accident just before 3 a.m. Thursday in Comanche County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Chevy Suburban driven by Ethan A. Shaw, 26, Lewis, was southbound on U.S. 183 approximately two miles north of Avenue C.

A&nbsp; pedestrian identified as 45-year-old Andrew J. Moore of Hutchinson, walking down the middle of roadway stepped out in front of the Suburban. The SUV struck Moore.&nbsp; EMS transported Moore to the Comanche County Hospital in Coldwater where he was pronounced deceased.

Shaw and three passengers in the SUV were not injured.

KHP: Hutchinson man dies after stepping in front of SUV

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tiffany Davison with the American Red Cross said Wednesday's blood drive at the Hutchinson EAGLE Media Center was successful.

"It went great," Davison said. "We had 25 donors register. We had three that were deferred and we collected 22 units. We also had four first-time donors. That's always exciting to get a new donor. It was a great day."

The Red Cross still needs your help to catch up on the blood supply issues that they had in May.

"The American Red Cross is asking donors to make plans to keep giving blood," Davison said. "We did have a steep decline in donation appointments last month. For example, in the blood drive you guys had, we had 34 people scheduled, 25 of those donors came and registered. Even sometimes, when we get the appointments, we're still not having them actually show."

If you missed on Wednesday, there is a community wide opportunity next week.

"Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, you can donate," Davison said. "We are there on Monday, June 5 from noon to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday June 7 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m."

EAGLE Media blood drive adds to supply

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Salvation Army in Hutchinson announced the return of the annual Donut Day Eating Contest. It will take place Friday, June 2.&nbsp;

"At 9:00 a.m., we'll be in front of the Salvation Army Thrift Store, across from Smith's Market," said Major Paul James. "We will have it on Facebook Live as well, so if you go to the Salvation Army's Facebook page, you can find a link, if you're not able to make it downtown. There's a lot of stuff that's happening Friday and Saturday downtown. You'll definitely want to come join us and watch people be silly and eat a lot of donuts. It's going to be a good time. My youngest son, he's participating this year. He said, dad, you didn't do very well last year."

The Donut Day Eating Contest will help send Reno County kids to summer camp and aid Salvation Army units working around the world in 130 countries.

"Half of it will go to sending kids to camp this summer," James said. "We transport kids to Kansas City. It's our regional camp. Each week, there's a different age group and a different theme, helping kids to pay to go to camp. It's really affordable. Either it's $25 a camp or $30 a camp, depending on if it's a three overnight camp or a four overnight camp or longer."

Donuts hold a special place in the history of the Salvation Army and for National Donut Day on June 2 this year, the breakfast treat plays a special role in helping the Salvation Army of Reno County serve locally and around the world.

National Donut Day was created following the service of Salvation Army officers and volunteers who served on the front lines of World War I, providing assistance to soldiers. They wrote letters, served coffee, and fried up donuts in army helmets. 

There will be free donuts and coffee to begin the day.

Salvation Army donut day Friday

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of Avenue E and south Main streets. 

In 1907, the Kansas City Stock Yard Company, after acquiring the Hutchinson Stock Yard at Ave. F and Main, paid the Armour Company $500,000 to build a packing house. 

The packing house took the Swift &amp; Co. name, which already had other facilities by that name. The first photo shows the plant with its creamery about 1930.

 By December 1902 it was hugely successful. That month alone, Swift &amp; Co. shipped 161,186 pounds of poultry from Hutch. Fat turkeys, chickens, ducks and geese were sent to both the East &amp; West coasts — 95,000 pounds of this was dressed here before shipping. 

Four railcars were shipped alive. Theodore Roosevelt was president between 1901 to 1909. He championed breaking up bad trusts during his Square Deal domestic policies. Swift &amp; Co. was one of those. The plant closed in 1938. 

The cost of rehabbing the old building was too much. It was consolidated into other facilities. Between 1947 to 1958, it was the Crown Poultry Products Inc. and the ARKAY Egg Products Co. 

On Nov. 29, 1958, the old building burned down. The second photo shows the property today. Most of it has been taken over by the Tyson Foods Company, except the very corner that is still the Richard Gray Barber Shop.
