MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Fire Department shared photos on social media of what caused a major traffic snarl on northbound I-135 near mile marker 60 before 2 p.m. Friday.

Traffic on I-135 had slowed to a crawl in one northbound lane and also caused an eventual slowdown in the southbound lanes. 

The incident was cleared by 4:10 p.m., according to the McPherson Fire Department. There was no report of injuries.

Incident delays traffic on I-135 Friday 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Police Department (HPD) is reminding people that June 16 is the due date for 2023 Hutchinson Police Youth Academy applications. 

The Youth Academy will take place on July 13 and is for upcoming seventh-graders only.&nbsp;Anyone within Reno County that meets the requirements may participate.

This is a free and fun educational opportunity by HPD to allow youth in the community to interact with officers and get a chance to have some hands-on law enforcement experience. 

Lunch will be provided to all participants.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Police Youth Academy will take place at the Law Enforcement Center located at 210 W. 1st Ave. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.&nbsp;

Interested people and their youth are asked to contact Capt. Gates for the required paperwork at (620) 694-2825.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The veterinarians at Apple Lane Animal Hospital have seen three heartworm-positive dogs in the last 10 days.

Dr. Erica Miller outlined the importance of preventative care.

"Once the heartworms get into the heart, they can spill over into the lungs," Miller said. "The damage they cause on the heart and lungs, I can't fix that."

She says treatment will get rid of any existing heartworms and prevent any further damage. However, "we can see dogs that go into congestive heart failure and have other issues even post-treatment," Miller said.

Dr. Randall Smith remembers when the animal hospital would see 130 to 150 dogs a year with heartworms. Smith says three cases in the last week-and-a-half are actually rare. He says the advent of monthly preventatives provided a better heartworm kill.

"You never know when the mosquitoes are going to be out," Smith said. "Now you've got the benefit that a lot of these heartworm preventions will do great jobs for intestinal parasites."

Dr. Smith says the dogs sometimes throw a wrench in an owner's best-laid plans.

"Sometimes you just don't know the dog," Smith said. "The dog may go outside and throw it (the heartworm pill) up. It may swallow it whole, it doesn't completely dissolve."

Smith pointed out the many variables and remembered one dog that hoarded its pills.

"Twenty-five, 30 years ago, we had a dog that came up heartworm-positive and they (the owners) were upset because they had been giving him the medicine. They were consistent, they never missed a month. Then they went home and rearranged the furniture, and underneath one of the chairs," Smith said with a chuckle, "was 10 of the 12 heartworm preventions. The dog would take them under there and spit them out."

Smith says mosquitoes are on the prowl when the weather is 50 degrees and above. She encourages dog owners to use preventative care year-round.

Smith says the current heartworm cases indicate dogs that were infected last spring or summer.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Oxford House Chapter 13 in Hutchinson will have a Bingo Night and Pancake Feed on June 24.&nbsp;

The event is a fundraiser and all proceeds will benefit sending members of Chapter 13 to the 2023 Oxford House World Convention.&nbsp;

Tickets for bingo are one for $3 and two for $5. Blackout tickets are $5. People who buy five tickets will get one free Blackout ticket.&nbsp;

Food is $5 a plate for the Pancake Feed. No one struggling with addiction will be turned away.&nbsp;

There will also be two guest speakers at the event.&nbsp;

Oxford House in Hutchinson holding fundraiser

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Down but not out. After more than a year in business, Ol’ Jake’s Convenience Store and Deli in Hutchinson shut its doors&nbsp;last week, but according to founder and owner Jodi True, it will be back very soon. &nbsp;

“We are opening this new store this next week. I'm not sure what day yet, but hopefully&nbsp;this next week,” True said. “We're gonna focus mostly on the deli.”&nbsp;

 Ol’ Jake’s opened at Plaza Towers building on Jan. 4, 2022. True envisioned the store as a convenient meal spot for people working and living in that area of Hutchinson’s downtown, and as more of a service as opposed to a business. &nbsp;

However, True admitted that could not last forever with the way things were going financially. The move did not come easy for True. She had been working another job in order to fund payroll for her employees. &nbsp;

The ultimate catalyst for the move to the new location was the lack of parking at Ol’ Jake’s. &nbsp;

“People told me all the time, ‘we love your sandwiches, we want to stop but there was no parking.’ It was either going to be close or relocate and people were just saying, ‘please don’t close, please don’t close,’” True said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All of Ol’ Jake’s delicious sandwiches are named&nbsp;after family pets, past and present.&nbsp;The establishment itself is named after a particular family pet that True held dear. &nbsp;

True cited the ‘Molly,’ their Mediterranean veggie sandwich, as her favorite. However, their best-selling sandwich is the ‘Milo,’ a sandwich with ham, turkey and bacon.&nbsp;

Other examples include ‘Fred,’ a ham sandwich, which True said was named after a particularly overreactive basset hound.&nbsp;

Ol’ Jake’s new location will be at 2420 N. Main St., Suite F. &nbsp;

When Ol’ Jake’s reopens in the near future, the menu will maintain its&nbsp;canine aliases, as well as bring on some new sandwiches, like breakfast sandwiches and a sandwich with turkey, cranberry and cream cheese. &nbsp;

They will also continue to sell their daily hot-plate specials. &nbsp;

Other than the expansion, Ol’ Jake’s will shift from convenience store items to more gift-based items like T-shirts and other knickknacks. &nbsp;

Ol' Jake's reopening in new location

At 2 a.m., deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Haven EMS, and District 9 Fire were dispatched to 24510 S. Willison Rd. for an injury motor-vehicle accident that involved a white Chevrolet Silverado and a blue Dodge Ram. 

When the first deputy arrived on-scene, he located the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado and proceeded with medical assessment. The driver was identified as Gary Wayne Dick of Hutchinson. 

There was no driver located for the blue Dodge Ram. 

As EMS was assessing Gary, deputies began searching the area alongside firefighters to attempt to locate the driver of the Dodge Ram. 

A drone was deployed with infrared capabilities and it was determined there was no driver in the area. 

A wallet belonging to the owner of the Dodge Ram was located in the wreckage and he was identified as Timothy Matthew England of Hutchinson. 

As deputies finished working the accident, England called 911 to report his truck as stolen. 

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information is asked to contact the Reno County Sheriff's Office at (620) 694-2735.&nbsp;

Sheriff's Dept. investigating crash, vehicle reported stolen

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In support of Smallville’s Community Heroes Day on Friday, June 16, the<a href="https://cosmo.org/"> Cosmosphere</a> in Hutchinson is offering a BOGO deal that same day.&nbsp;

First responders, including police,&nbsp;sheriffs, fire and EMS, and 911 dispatchers, will have the opportunity to buy one All-Access Mission Pass and get one free of charge on June 16.&nbsp;

Civil servants will be able to enjoy a documentary in the Carey Digital Dome Theater, experience a planetarium show, see live science in Dr. Goddard's lab and take a trip through the Hall of Space Museum. &nbsp;

The Cosmosphere has hopped on board the Smallville train with its own fun Superman-themed activities.&nbsp;

“We do have in our planetarium, the option to try and point out where the planet [Krypton] may have been,” Mimi Meredith, Cosmosphere Senior Vice President of Communication and Chief Development Officer, said. “We have been given coordinates.” &nbsp;

In DC’s comic book publications, Krypton is the home planet of Superman. &nbsp;

 Additionally, Meredith said the Cosmosphere has another role in the Smallville Festival coming up on June 15 through June 17. &nbsp;

 “The Cosmosphere is participating, but I am not at liberty to say how,” Meredith said. &nbsp;

In addition to showing their badge or work identification, to receive the BOGO offer, first responders can call (620) 665-9312 or purchase tickets at the Box Office upon arrival. The offer is not available online. &nbsp;

Meredith also reminded Reno County resident first responders and civil servants that their children can enjoy CosmoKids at the Cosmosphere for free. &nbsp;

 </figure>JUDD WEIL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — In support of Smallville’s Community Heroes Day on Friday, June 16, the<a href="https://cosmo.org/"> Cosmosphere</a> in Hutchinson is offering a BOGO deal that same day.&nbsp;First responders, including police,&nbsp;sheriffs, fire and EMS, and 911 dispatchers, will have the opportunity to buy one All-Access Mission Pass and get one free of charge on June 16.&nbsp;Civil servants will be able to enjoy a documentary in the Carey Digital Dome Theater, experience a planetarium show, see live science in Dr. Goddard's lab and take a trip through the Hall of Space Museum. &nbsp;The Cosmosphere has hopped on board the Smallville train with its own fun Superman-themed activities.&nbsp;“We do have in our planetarium, the option to try and point out where the planet [Krypton] may have been,” Mimi Meredith, Cosmosphere Senior Vice President of Communication and Chief Development Officer, said. “We have been given coordinates.” &nbsp;In DC’s comic book publications, Krypton is the home planet of Superman. &nbsp; Additionally, Meredith said the Cosmosphere has another role in the Smallville Festival coming up on June 15 through June 17. &nbsp; “The Cosmosphere is participating, but I am not at liberty to say how,” Meredith said. &nbsp;In addition to showing their badge or work identification, to receive the BOGO offer, first responders can call (620) 665-9312 or purchase tickets at the Box Office upon arrival. Cosmosphere offering deal to first responders

LINDSBORG, Kan. —&nbsp;Celebrate a Swedish tradition in the heartland&nbsp;in Lindsborg with the annual and traditional <a href="https://www.visitlindsborg.com/midsummers-festival">Midsummer’s Festival on June 17</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“In Sweden, they celebrate the longest day of the year, which is considered the summer solstice,” Geneva Hay, Lindsborg Midsummer's Festival president, said. “Basically, it's the Swedish festival that is celebrated worldwide. It welcomes the arrival of the summer solstice, and with this, Lindsborg is considered to be ‘Little Sweden.’ We've got a lot of Swedish heritage, that’s kind of what our town revolves around, and so we take a lot of those different events and celebrations and things along that line, and we&nbsp;incorporate them into our community here.”&nbsp;

This event is held on the Third Saturday in June.&nbsp;

“With the Midsummer's Festival, we designed it to be very fun-filled and a day for the entire family. It ranges anywhere from fun runs in the morning to <a href="https://irp.cdn-website.com/d4211c19/files/uploaded/Kubb%20Registration%20Form%202023.pdf">kubb&nbsp;tournaments</a>. We have those type of events, we bring in dancers from different locations that come in, we have a couple groups of Vikings that come in from out-of-state that do Viking reenactments because we are a very Viking-centric location,” Hay said. “We bring those groups in and we highlight a lot of our different talents, a lot of our different musical talent, craft talents, food demonstration talent, anything that we can in that festive setup.”&nbsp;

There are two sets of Swedish folk dancers. One troupe is made up of high school freshmen through seniors. The other is an adult dance troupe. Both troupes are very rooted in Swedish tradition. &nbsp;

According to Hay, the Midsummer’s Festival piggybacks off another event held in October, Svensk&nbsp;Hyllningsfest. Svensk&nbsp;Hyllningsfest is held every other year. &nbsp;

“This is just strictly a one-day thing that we do, but the festival itself is free,” Hay said. “There are some activities that you can be a part of that do charge, but to get into the festival, to be able to look at the demonstrations, to be able to watch the entertainment, embark in all of the different activities, the kids activities, things like that, there's no charge to it.”&nbsp;

The Midsummer’s Festival is slated to begin with a fun-run event at 8 a.m. &nbsp;

“From 8:30 to 10:30 at night, the finale of it all is a free swim that the city of Lindsborg, through our request, has opened, since it's all at the park next to the swimming pool,” Hay said. “We open it up so anybody that wants to cool off that day can go for a free swim for two hours.”&nbsp;

“This year we’ve actually got some neat, exciting things going on. We’re doing a stinky fish-eating contest, we’ve got a section in there where audience participation can come up and tell jokes,” Hay said. “Then in the evening, everything basically proceeds to another section that’s at the park, which is actually owned by our Old Mill Association, called Heritage Square, and that is where we kind of do our finalization of the dance. We raise our really large Midsummer’s pole at that time, that’s been decorated all beautifully, and they dance around to finish off the festivities.” &nbsp;

Celebration like the Midsummer’s Festival are more than just culturally significant to the people of Lindsborg and their Swedish heritage. &nbsp;

“The reason we do these festivals is because of our heritage. People look for those things, people come to this town, and they look for those unique things,” Hay said. “They look for the kindness, they look for the downhome root of the Swedish and the different things that go on.” &nbsp;

Lindsborg Midsummer's Festival celebrates Swedish Heritage

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 4th Avenue on the south side. 

S.J. Houston was from Wichita and owned a string of lumber yards in this part of the state. In 1913, he bought out the inventory of the Campbell Lumber Company at 417 E. 2nd, purchased the property at 15 E. 4th, razed the houses there and built the S.J. Houston Lumber Yard there. 

The first photo shows that concern in 1913.

In 1916, Houston sold interest to R.H. Doughty. The business then became Houston-Doughty Lumber, and employed George H. Stuckey and Nick Renner to manage it. 

In 1947, the group of George H. Stuckey, V.G. Cunningham, George F. Stuckey and Frank A. Stuckey purchased the lumber yard from Houston-Doughty. 

In 1961, Stuckey Lumber moved to new quarters at 11th and Lorraine. 

In 1964, the Faraday Corp. of Glendale, California, built a 35-unit motel on the property for $180,000. Charles Messersmith and his wife moved here from Rockford, Illinois, to manage it. The new motel was named the Astro Motel. 

The Astro has seen a few different ownerships since then. The second photo shows the property today, now known as the Sky Palace Inn &amp; Suites by Jasper.

The 15 E. 4th property is now owned by Harshad Bhakta of Wichita.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Calling all heroes! The Hutchinson Zoo is hosting its first ever Hometown Heroes Family Zoo Night on June 16.&nbsp;

“We are going to celebrate some of our first responders and other heroes that we have in the community,” Hannah Grace, Friends of the Hutchinson Zoo administrator, said. “We're going to do some activities for both our first responders and we have some activities for students to celebrate their teachers.”&nbsp;

Hometown Heroes Family Zoo Night at the Hutchinson Zoo will have plenty for people to do. &nbsp;

“We will have some of our super awesome first responder trucks and vehicles, so everybody gets to see those. We know that the kids love the up-close and personal with their favorite first responders,” Grace said. “We'll have some crafts here so they can pick their favorites, whether that's EMS or fire or police, or there's actually an option to pick no choice and they could just do a craft where they get to create their own badge.”&nbsp;

620 In The Mix will be DJing at the event. &nbsp;

There will be a few&nbsp;animal encounters at the Hometown Heroes event. &nbsp;

“We will have at least three animal encounters. I have one keeper who told me she actually wants to move, so we might have five separate animal encounters throughout the night,” Grace said. “There's going to be several different stations, so you can pick and choose which animal you want to hear about, what to learn about, get kind of an up-close personal meet-and-greet with the animals. We’ll also have our education coordinator here who will help introduce some of our education animals, which are the ones that you can get even closer to. You don't have to have a separation barrier between you and most of them.”&nbsp;

The encounters will take place at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. &nbsp;

Hometown Heroes is also a fundraising effort for the Hutchinson Zoo. &nbsp;

“The majority of the events that we do for the Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo are to raise funds for enclosure improvements or major improvements, such as the Splash River that we are about to open or our bison exhibit that's coming up soon,” Grace said. &nbsp;

Entry to Hometown Heroes is $10 per person. Tickets give access to all events throughout the night, including train rides. Tickets are also buy three, get one free. &nbsp;

Additionally, Tyson Foods has donated hamburgers. Meal tickets are an additional $5. &nbsp;

Hometown Heroes is just 'part one' of Hutchinson Zoo’s Family Zoo Nights. Part two, Fairytails, is slated for July 14.&nbsp;

Hometown Heroes at Hutchinson Zoo next week

HESSTON, Kan. — Bluestem Communities announced on June 7 that the community is invited to join Schowalter Villa residents and their families to celebrate Father's Day with a vintage car show at Mullet Place Assisted Living on June 17.

The car show will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mullet Place Assisted Living parking lot.&nbsp;

The event will feature food for purchase, music and games for kids.

“The car show is always a highlight for Schowalter Villa residents because they enjoy reminiscing about the vehicles that were part of their own life,” Cherie Wohlgemuth, car show organizer, said. “Because of pandemic precautions, we’ve kept our last couple of car shows pretty low key just for residents, so we are excited to welcome the public back this year. It’s a great way to celebrate Father’s Day weekend.”

Mullet Place is located at 445 S. Main St. in Hesston.

Schowalter Villa, a life plan community part of Bluestem Communities, is home to more than 435 residents living in health care, assisted living and independent living neighborhoods.

KINGMAN COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just after 9 a.m. Wednesday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Buick Encore, driven by&nbsp; Joseph Richard Douze, 59, Miami, Florida, was westbound on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. 54, two and one-half miles east of Kingman.

A 2016 Chevy Cruz driven by Frances Claire Bowman, 82, Garden Plain, was eastbound in the eastbound lane of the highway.

Douze attempted an evasive maneuver and the Buick struck the Chevy head-on.

EMS transported Douze to the hospital in Kingman and Bowman to Wesley Medical Center. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after Kingman Co. head-on crash

BUHLER, Kan. —&nbsp;USD 313 Buhler Public Schools recently announced their intention to survey district patrons regarding their opinions on school facility needs. 

As the board of education evaluates facility needs that could be met with their bond and interest fund, the board plans to hear patrons’ priorities for projects that would benefit students.

The district has recently refinanced the existing school bond to obtain a lower interest rate, qualified for increased state aid for bond and interest, and experienced increased property valuations. These combined factors create funds with the existing mill levy that could be used to pay off an additional bond of approximately $10 million. 

The survey contains a variety of projects that could be pursued with those funds. Patrons can provide their own ideas for projects that have not been specifically mentioned in the survey.

The survey is open now and will be available until June 23. Most district patrons will receive a postcard containing a QR code to take the survey online.

A paper-pencil copy of the survey can be obtained at the district office for those who do not have access to the internet or are not comfortable with completing a survey online. Paper-pencil surveys will also be available at two community meetings.

Four community meetings are planned to visit with patrons and provide time for questions and answers about facility issues:

June 13, 12 p.m. at Buhler High School Library

June 13, 7 p.m. at Plum Creek Elementary Library

June 20, 12:00 p.m. at Plum Creek Elementary Library

Results of the survey will be shared with the board of education and patrons in July.

Buhler Public Schools to survey patrons regarding facility needs

TOPEKA, Kan. —&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Transportation announced the approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects on June 7. Multiple projects are in District Five South Central Kansas, like Reno County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The letting took place May 24 in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work.

The K‑61 bridge In Reno County over Medora Road, located one mile north of South Dean Road, will be subject to milling and overlay for 0.1 mile. The contractor is APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division in Hutchinson for the amount $173,283.

U.S. 166 in Cowley County from the U.S. 166/U.S. 77 junction east to the Cowley/Chautauqua county line. It will be subject to pavement marking for 28.4 miles. The contractor is Cillessen and Sons Inc. in Kechi for the amount of $396,993.11.

The I‑135 bridge in Harvey County, located one mile north of the K‑196/I‑135 junction, will undergo bridge repair. The contractor is Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. &amp; Subsidiaries in Wichita for the amount of $94,432.25.

The U.S. 160 bridge in Sumner County over Hargis Creek, located 0.3 mile east of the east U.S. 81 junction, will undergo bridge replacement. The contractor is Dondlinger &amp; Sons Construction Co. Inc. in Wichita for the amount of $3,564,404.00.&nbsp;

KDOT announces approved May bids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Are you a super smart CEO or an alien 'brainiac' from the planet Colu? Then test your comic book knowledge at <a href="https://www.renocomuseum.org/">Reno County Museum's</a> Superhero Trivia Night at <a href="https://saltcitybrewing.com/">Salt City Brewing Co.</a> on June 13.&nbsp;

Reno County Museum is hosting this Superhero Trivia Night to raise funds for renovations.

"We are wanting new display cases and carpet, are the big two at the moment," Brianna Buller, Reno County Museum event coordinator, said. "Its time for a facelift."&nbsp;

Money raised from the trivia night will also go toward the Reno County Museum's upcoming exhibit projects.

"Our curator has a goal of creating a comprehensive, chronological history of Reno County," Buller said. "This is just a step to better the museum so we can tell that story."

According to Buller, Reno County Museum Curator David Reed is working on an exhibit highlighting Reno County communities in the 21st century.&nbsp;

Another future exhibit is said to focus on impactful women of Reno County.&nbsp;

To participate in the trivia night, there is a suggested donation of $10 per team to play. 

Additionally, Salt City Brewing Co., is making a themed specialty drink with some of the proceeds going to the museum.

The museum will also be opening a Smallville exhibit on Thursday, June 8. The exhibit will close on June 17.&nbsp;
