HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As fall begins to arrive and winter approaches, Hutchinson veterinarian Dr. Jon Austin is reminding pet owners to take early steps to safeguard their animals’ health and comfort.

“When you’re adding a member to your family, it’s a lot of responsibility, and it requires a good relationship with a veterinarian to help the healthcare needs of that new member of your family,” said Austin of Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital.

Austin stressed the importance of early veterinary visits for puppies. “You need to get that appointment made right away when you get a new puppy,” he said. “Vaccinations should start at about eight weeks of age. That’s when the puppy’s immune system is going to be able to recognize that it needs a vaccine and can do something to build immunity.”

Parvovirus is the greatest concern locally, Austin said. “The one that’s deadly, the one that’s dangerous, the one that we have a lot of concern for, is parvovirus. So we hit that one a couple of times before we start with the others.”

He added that bringing a pet into the household should be a family decision. “It’s a 10 to 15 year situation,” he said. “It requires a little bit of responsibility and a lot of hard work in the first six months.”

For older pets, Austin noted that osteoarthritis is common, especially in large breeds. “There’s lots of medicines that can help extend that time and extend the quality of life and activity of life for those older dogs,” he said.

With colder weather on the horizon, Austin urged pet owners to prepare kennels and outdoor spaces. “You need to have a shelter or a bed that protects them from the wind and from the moisture and is up off the ground,” he said. “Water is probably as much or more important for survival than the food is.”

He also warned about seasonal hazards. “Liquid antifreeze … is deadly poisonous,” Austin said. “Your cats or dogs will go in there and they’ll lap it up and it will kill them. So be responsible if you’re doing that.”

Austin encouraged owners to keep microchip information current and to consider grooming needs, especially for popular doodle breeds. “Once you get established with a groomer, make a regular appointment schedule and keep it,” he said.

And for those still dealing with pests, he added a reminder: “Right now, the fleas are at their peak until we freeze. Be sure you keep your pet protected for fleas and ticks until we get a good hard freeze.”

The Hutchinson Fire Department said firefighters located the fire in a bathroom and quickly extinguished it. Several pets were found inside the residence and were safely removed.

The home was occupied by two adults, three children and several dogs and cats. No injuries were reported. Officials said the occupants were alerted by a working smoke detector.

The fire caused moderate damage to the bathroom, and the home was deemed uninhabitable.

Hutchinson Fire officials thanked Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications, Reno County EMS, Kansas Gas, Evergy and the Hutchinson Police Department for assisting at the scene.

WHAT TAX CHANGES ARE IN THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL?

The One Big Beautiful Bill, signed into law on July 4, 2025, brings with it a sweeping package of tax changes and budget measures that will have a broad impact on individuals, families and businesses. The legislation makes permanent several provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), while introducing new incentives for workers and business owners.

FOR BUSINESSES: KEY TAX BREAKS &amp; COMPLIANCE CHANGES

Bigger Tax Incentives for Investment and Expansion

The bill introduces or expands several provisions aimed at encouraging capital investment, manufacturing and innovation:&nbsp;

100% Bonus Depreciation Made Permanent. Now retroactive to qualifying property purchased or placed in service on or after Jan. 19, 2025. Section 179 Expensing Limit Increased. Businesses can now deduct up to $2.5 million in qualifying property (up from $1.16 million limit 2023 level). The deduction begins to phase out at $4 million in asset cost. New Deduction for Qualifying Production Property. Allows 100% expensing of structures used in manufacturing. Applies to construction that begins between Jan. 19, 2025, and Jan. 19, 2029, if placed in service before Jan. 1, 2031. R&amp;D Expensing Restored for Small Businesses.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.adamsbrowncpa.com/blog/expanding-rd-tax-credits-kansas/">Domestic R&amp;D </a>costs&nbsp;can now be expensed immediately for businesses with gross receipts under $31 million. These businesses may also retroactively deduct expenses from tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 2021. Businesses with average gross receipts under $31 million can begin expensing these costs in 2025. Also, large business taxpayers with R&amp;D expenses after 2021 and before 2025 may deduct remaining expenses over a one- or two- year period, beginning in 2025. Advanced Manufacturing Credit. Increases from 25% to 35%, incentivizing U.S.-based production facilities. Paid Family and Medical Leave Credit. Made permanent, providing continued support for employers offering leave benefits. Qualified Small Business Stock (Sec. 1202) Exclusion Expanded.&nbsp; For stock acquired after enactment, gain exclusions increase: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;50% if held for three years &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;75% if held for four years &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;100% if held for five years or more Opportunity Zones and New Markets Tax Credit. Both made permanent to support community investment.&nbsp; Farmland Sale Deferral (Sec. 1062). Tax from farmland sales to a qualified farmer can now be paid in four annual installments. Interest Exclusion for Ag Loans. Allows a 25% exclusion of interest received on loans secured by agricultural land. The borrower’s deduction is reduced proportionally.&nbsp; Percentage of Completion Exception. Certain residential construction contracts are now exempt from this revenue recognition method, helping small builders manage taxable income timing. EBITDA-Based Limitation on Business Interest Deduction Reinstated (IRC Sec. 163(j)). The bill permanently reinstates the EBITDA-based (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) formula for calculating the business interest expense limitation. This replaces the more restrictive EBIT-based standard that had been phased in. This change provides broader deductibility for leveraged businesses. Modifications to the Excess Business Loss Limitation. The legislation also includes technical and structural changes to the excess business loss calculation, offering additional clarity and predictability in tax planning for pass-through owners and investors. QBI Deduction Expanded. The 20% deduction is now permanent and adds a $400 minimum deduction for taxpayers with at least $1,000 in qualified business income from active participation.

WORKFORCE &amp; CHILDCARE INCENTIVES

Employer Childcare Credit Increased Rises from 25% to 40%, up to $600,000 annually—encouraging more employers to offer on-site or subsidized childcare solutions.&nbsp;

REPORTING &amp; COMPLIANCE CHANGES&nbsp;

1099-K Threshold Restored Returns to the previous $20,000 and 200 transaction threshold, reducing the burden on casual sellers and small e-commerce businesses.&nbsp; 1099-NEC/MISC Threshold Increased Starting in 2026, reporting is only required for non-employee payments of $2,000 or more (indexed for inflation). This change may reduce the number of 1099s businesses must issue. ERC Compliance Tightened The Employee Retention Credit program now includes stricter claim deadlines and new penalties for non-compliance.&nbsp; New 1% Remittance Transfer Tax Applies to certain outbound cash transfers, such as money orders or cashier’s checks. Withdrawals from bank accounts or credit cards are excluded.&nbsp; SSN Requirements for Education Credits Taxpayers must provide a valid SSN to claim the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credits.

CLEAN ENERGY TAX CREDIT PHASE-OUT&nbsp;

Most Clean Energy Credits Sunset by 2026–2028 This includes credits for electric vehicles, solar panel installations and home energy upgrades.&nbsp; Clean Fuel Production Credit (45Z) Extended through 2029, maintaining incentives for low-carbon fuel producers.&nbsp;

FOR INDIVIDUALS: LOWER RATES AND NEW DEDUCTIONS

TAX RATES AND DEDUCTIONS Permanent Lower Tax Brackets The TCJA's individual tax brackets are now permanent. Annual adjustments for inflation will continue.&nbsp; Higher Standard Deductions for 2025 &nbsp; &nbsp; $15,750 – Single &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;$23,625 – Head of Household&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;$31,500 – Married Filing Jointly SALT Deduction Cap Temporarily Increased The state and local tax deduction cap is raised to $40,000 for 2025, increasing by 1% annually through 2029. A phaseout begins for incomes over $500,000. Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) Exemption Increased Now permanently set at $500,000 for single filers and $1 million for joint returns, indexed for inflation.&nbsp;

Child Tax Credit Increased to $2,200 per child in 2025. The refundable portion of $1,400 is now permanent.&nbsp; Child &amp; Dependent Care Credit Rises to 50% of eligible expenses. Adoption Credit Now up to $5,000 and fully refundable. Dependent Care Assistance Exclusion from income raised from $5,000 to $7,500.

SENIOR BENEFITS AND RETIREMENT PLANNING

Temporary Senior Deduction (2025–2028) A $6,000 deduction is available for individuals age 65+ with modified adjusted gross income under $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers). This helps shield Social Security income from federal tax. Estate &amp; Gift Tax Exemption Increased Starting in 2026, the exemption rises to $15 million per individual and $30 million per couple, indexed for inflation.&nbsp;

OTHER NOTABLE INDIVIDUAL PROVISIONS

Mortgage Interest Deduction Cap Made Permanent Limited to interest on up to $750,000 of mortgage debt. Casualty Losses Expanded Now includes losses from certain state-declared disasters. Charitable Giving for Non-Itemizers A new above-the-line deduction is available for up to $1,000 (or $2,000 for joint filers) in charitable contributions. Trump Accounts New savings accounts for children, capped at $5,000 per year. Includes a $1,000 tax credit for children born between 2025 and 2028. Employers may contribute on a tax-free basis. 529 Plan Expansion Distributions now permitted for K–12 tuition, qualified postsecondary credentialing programs and traditional higher education expenses, offering greater&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.adamsbrownwc.com/529-savings-plans/">flexibility for education-related savings</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tip Income Deduction Up to $25,000 in tip income may be excluded for individuals earning under $150,000 ($300,000 joint filers). Overtime Income Deduction Up to $12,500 per person ($25,000 joint returns) of overtime wages may be excluded. Car Loan Interest Deduction Up to $10,000 may be deducted for new U.S.-assembled vehicles, even for non-itemizers.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Crews began removing traffic lights Tuesday at two intersections after a city traffic study determined the signals were no longer needed.

The lights at Avenue A and Washington Street and at 4th Avenue and Washington Street are being taken down following a summer trial period. Both intersections now feature stop signs on the northbound and southbound lanes.

Earlier this year, Hutchinson Public Works Director Cecil Weible told the City Council that removing unwarranted signals can reduce the chance of accidents by about 24 percent.

The change is also expected to save the city about $2,900 annually in electrical and maintenance costs.

The removal process began in May with advance notice signage and temporary bagging of the signals to monitor traffic flow. City officials said the engineering study that prompted the change was based on traffic volumes, safety data, and national standards.

The Fair opened Sept. 5 under misty skies, followed by a strong weekend before heavy rain on Monday snarled parking. To keep the grounds accessible, officials rolled out shuttle service from Hutchinson Community College, the Hutchinson Uptown Mall and Bold 3PL.

“We are grateful to the Hutchinson community and our emergency response partners for helping us make these adjustments quickly and safely,” General Manager Bryan Schulz said. “Our staff, Fair Board, and countless supporters worked tirelessly to make this year’s Fair a success despite the weather.”

Kansas State Fair draws 300,784 despite rainy weather

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jim Olson spent more than 30 years living a life of secrets. On Tuesday, the former CIA counterintelligence chief talked about his long clandestine career, which was both the honor of a lifetime and a constant test of endurance.

Olson, who served in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations before becoming chief of counterintelligence at headquarters in Langley, Va., spoke at a press conference ahead of his Dillon Lecture Series appearance at Hutchinson Community College.

“Our mission is to protect the American people,” Olson said. “It was a very fulfilling thing to do. My wife and I really got a lot of satisfaction out of providing intelligence to keep the American people safer.”

He described his Cold War posting to Moscow as the dream assignment of any CIA officer, though it carried grave risks. “The consequence of getting caught would be catastrophic,” he said. “Our job was to steal Russia’s secrets on their turf, under their nose, and not get caught.” He and his wife, Meredith, underwent intensive psychological testing before the assignment. “Your apartment is bugged. You’re followed everywhere you go. You can’t talk about your work, you can’t talk about your problems. It’s a very artificial way to live,” he said. Even so, the couple believed in their mission. “We felt honored to be there and to have the opportunity to collect intelligence against our main adversary.”

Coming home required adjustment. “We couldn’t believe we could actually talk,” Olson said. “Living in a hostile environment like that is hard to get away from. Our marriage is strong, and we adjusted in due course, but it has its aftereffects. I have recurring dreams. For some reason, my dreams are being chased.”

Olson said he never planned on becoming a spy. Raised in Iowa, he studied law and expected to become a small-town attorney until the CIA reached out. “I did not apply. They found me,” he said. “Somebody spotted me, one of my professors, I think, and I got a call out of the blue. Once I got there, I realized that’s where I belonged.” He recalled being asked where he thought he could best contribute. “I liked research. I liked writing. I said I think I could help you with analysis. They were looking at all my psychological profiles and training records. They knew me better than I knew myself. They said, ‘No, you’re going to be an operator.’ It turned out they were right.”

After retiring, Olson accepted an invitation from former President George H.W. Bush to establish an intelligence studies program at Texas A&amp;M University. The move required him and his wife to come out from undercover, a step most CIA officers avoid. “Most of our people retire undercover,” Olson said. “That’s much more comfortable. You don’t have to worry about the threats. That was our plan, but it didn’t work out that way.” Leaving secrecy behind also brought new dangers. “There are really bad people out there, terrorists, narcotics traffickers, organized crime, and they’ve got long memories,” he said. “Meredith and I are always very careful. The FBI and local police have been involved several times because of threats we’ve received.”

At Texas A&amp;M, Olson said interest in intelligence careers is strong, but many students are undone by mistakes from their teenage years. “It’s heartbreaking,” he said. “Because of dumb decisions you made when you were 16, 17 or 18, it’s never going to happen.”

Reflecting on decades in the shadows, Olson said the work was never easy but always worthwhile. “We had a lot of very courageous Russians who were risking their lives working secretly with us,” he said. “You always were aware that a single mistake could be fatal to them and possibly to you as well. But what sustained us was our belief in the mission. We felt honored to be there. It was kind of the dream assignment of any CIA officer to go to Moscow.”

MCPHERSON COUNTY — Law enforcement in McPherson are investigating a day care owner for alleged child abuse.

On September 11, Police arrested 50-year-old Kimberly Horn on requested charges of endangering a child, abuse of a child; knowingly cause great bodily harm/abuse head trauma and permit a dangerous animal to be at large, according to online jail records.

The following day, the Kansas Department of Health issued an <a href="https://khap.kdhe.ks.gov/OIDS/OIDS_ViewFacility.aspx?facilitysearch=gZHsN3Fp83scAM%2bpg20HPMfv8XtG9WEFWjhCJI44Hy9U%2b0Jc%2frJgLVsHKR%2fA2co4a8rwzYKVIwo%3d">emergency order of suspension</a> for&nbsp;Kimberly Kay Horn Day Care Home, 705 Hunter Court in McPherson, according to the KDHE website.

Just before 6p.m. on September 12 she met the requirement of bond and was released from jail and charged with child abuse involving a child, according to court documents.

Horn's preliminary hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA is inviting the public to make their mark on its future by signing the final structural beam of its new facility before it is put into place.

The beam signing event will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the construction site of the 75,000-square-foot YMCA, located at the intersection of 20th Avenue and Lorraine Street.

“We thought that’d be kind of a neat idea to have a beam visible in the new Y that people could sign,” said David Foster, branch director of the Hutchinson YMCA. “It’ll be one of the last structural beams to go in place in the new facility, which is pretty cool. And we just wanted to be open to anybody and everybody in the community that would want to come out and be a part of that piece of history.”

Foster said the idea originated with the construction company, which suggested leaving the beam uncovered for the community to see. “We thought, man, that’s a great idea. A lot of times when you sign a board or a beam, it gets covered up. But the fact that it would be visible for people as long as the Y is there, I thought that’d be a pretty cool thing,” he said.

The new YMCA, scheduled to open in late summer 2026, will replace the current location on 13th Avenue. Plans include expanded fitness areas, two aquatic centers, a gymnasium and a dedicated gymnastics center.

“None of our other branches in the greater Wichita Y have anything like that,” Foster said. “So it’ll be something really specific and really neat to Hutch.”

The come-and-go event will take place in the south parking lot of the new site, with attendees asked to enter off 20th Street. “We’ll have a section kind of roped off or sectioned off in the south parking lot,” Foster said. “People can just stay long enough to sign their name on the beam and be on about their day.”

Despite recent rainfall, construction is on track. Foster said crews expect to install the signed beam about a week after the event. “They’re hoping to have the facility kind of buttoned up by Thanksgiving so they can put some temporary heat in there and work through the really cold months,” he said. “Things are progressing quite well.”

 </figure>By <a href="mailto:sean.boston@eaglemedia.com">SEAN BOSTON</a> Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA is inviting the public to make their mark on its future by signing the final structural beam of its new facility before it is put into place.The beam signing event will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the construction site of the 75,000-square-foot YMCA, located at the intersection of 20th Avenue and Lorraine Street.“We thought that’d be kind of a neat idea to have a beam visible in the new Y that people could sign,” said David Foster, branch director of the Hutchinson YMCA. “It’ll be one of the last structural beams to go in place in the new facility, which is pretty cool. And we just wanted to be open to anybody and everybody in the community that would want to come out and be a part of that piece of history.”Foster said the idea originated with the construction company, which suggested leaving the beam uncovered for the community to see. “We thought, man, that’s a great idea. A lot of times when you sign a board or a beam, it gets covered up. But the fact that it would be visible for people as long as the Y is there, I thought that’d be a pretty cool thing,” he said.The new YMCA, scheduled to open in late summer 2026, will replace the current location on 13th Avenue. Plans include expanded fitness areas, two aquatic centers, a gymnasium and a dedicated gymnastics center.“None of our other branches in the greater Wichita Y have anything like that,” Foster said. “So it’ll be something really specific and really neat to Hutch.”The come-and-go event will take place in the south parking lot of the new site, with attendees asked to enter off 20th Street. “We’ll have a section kind of roped off or sectioned off in the south parking lot,” Foster said. “People can just stay long enough to sign their name on the beam and be on about their day.”Despite recent rainfall, construction is on track. Foster said crews expect to install the signed beam about a week after the event. “They’re hoping to have the facility kind of buttoned up by Thanksgiving so they can put some temporary heat in there and work through the really cold months,” he said. “Things are progressing quite well.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Residents in the Yoder area are being warned that nitrate levels in their drinking water remain above federal and state safety limits, according to Reno County officials.

The most recent test, collected Sept. 8 from Rural Water District 101, showed nitrate levels of 12 milligrams per liter. That exceeds the maximum contaminant level of 10 milligrams per liter set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

High nitrate levels can be especially dangerous for infants younger than six months, pregnant women and nursing mothers. Infants exposed to nitrate-contaminated water are at risk of developing “blue baby syndrome,” a potentially life-threatening condition that reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.

Nitrates can enter water supplies from natural, industrial or agricultural sources, including fertilizer runoff and septic systems. Reno County said it provides routine public notices for acute nitrate violations as required by KDHE.

Households with at-risk residents may request bottled water through the county until the problem is resolved. The water district will continue quarterly testing and public notifications until nitrate levels fall below the allowable limit.

PRATT COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Monday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Jeep Wrangler driven by Jay M. Brown, 60, Minneapolis, Minnesota, was traveling southwest on Kansas Highway at 60th Avenue eight miles north of Pratt.

The Jeep traveled left of center across the northeast lanes, entered the south ditch, struck an embankment rolled onto it roof.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Larrison Mortuary. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Man dies after SUV rollover accident

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Most Americans believe, with good reason, that their food supply is among the safest in the world.

And yet, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 48 million people – about 1 in 6 Americans – get foodborne infections every year. Of those, nearly 128,000 are hospitalized; 3,000 die from their illness.

Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says children age 5 and younger are at higher risk of foodborne illness because their immune systems are still developing and they cannot fight off infections as well as older children and adults.

“Also, young children make less stomach acid that kills harmful bacteria, making it easier for them to get sick,” Blakeslee said.

Because young children’s bodies are small, vomiting or diarrhea that often accompanies foodborne illness can lead to serious dehydration.

The World Health Organization reports that there are more than 200 diseases caused by eating food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances, such as heavy metals.

“In children under five years of age, some foodborne infections with the bacterium&nbsp;Escherichia coli (E. coli)&nbsp;can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication that can cause chronic kidney disease, kidney failure and death,” Blakeslee said.

“E. coli&nbsp;infections are likely to come from undercooked ground meat, unpasteurized (or raw) milk, unpasteurized fruit juice, lettuce, spinach, sprouts and even fresh or frozen cookie dough, if eaten before it is cooked.”

In addition to&nbsp;E. coli, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists Norovirus,&nbsp;Salmonella,&nbsp;Campylobacter, Hepatitis A and&nbsp;Listeria&nbsp;as the most common foodborne illnesses in the United States.

Blakeslee urges parents and caregivers to always follow four basic steps critical to preparing food safely: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Clean surfaces, utensils and hands before and after handling food. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Separate foods during preparation. Use different cutting boards for meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Cook food properly. Use a food thermometer to check for the doneness of meats, casseroles and leftovers.&nbsp; •&nbsp;&nbsp;Chill foods during and after serving. Keep the refrigerator at 40 degrees F or below to keep bacteria from growing.

When preparing food, “wash your hands frequently, especially after using the restroom or changing baby diapers,” Blakeslee said. “And teach children how to wash their hands. Show them how to use soap and how to rub their hands together.”

K-State food scientist encourages safety tips for kids

The Federal Aviation Administration is seeking $3.1 million in fines from Boeing over safety violations, including ones related to an Alaska Airlines jetliner losing a door plug panel on its fuselage in midflight.&nbsp;

The proposed penalty is for safety violations that occurred from September 2023 through February 2024, the FAA said Friday.&nbsp;

That period includes the January 2024&nbsp;blowout&nbsp;of a paneled-over exit door — called a door plug —- on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 shortly after it took off from Portland, Oregon.&nbsp;

None of the 171 passengers or six crew members on the flight were seriously injured. Pilots landed the plane safely back at the airport.&nbsp;

In June, the National Transportation Safety Board said its 17-month long&nbsp;investigation&nbsp;found that lapses in Boeing’s manufacturing and safety oversight, combined with ineffective inspections and audits by the FAA, led to the door plug blowout.&nbsp;

The FAA said Friday that it identified hundreds of quality system violations at Boeing's 737 factory in Renton, Washington, and Boeing subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems' 737 factory in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;

Among other violations, the regulator also found that a Boeing employee pressured a member of Boeing's ODA unit, which is tasked with performing certain inspections and certifications on the FAA's behalf, to sign off on a 737 Max airplane “so that Boeing could meet its delivery schedule, even though the ODA member determined the aircraft did not comply with applicable standards.”&nbsp;

Arlington, Virginia-based Boeing has 30 days to respond to the FAA.&nbsp;

In a statement Saturday, Boeing said it is reviewing the agency's proposed civil penalty, noting that the company put in place a safety and quality plan last year, under FAA oversight, that aims to enhance safety management and quality assurance in its airplane production.&nbsp;

“We regret the January 2024 door-plug accident and continue to work on strengthening our safety culture and improving first-time quality and accountability across our operations," the company said.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Max version of Boeing’s bestselling 737&nbsp;airplane has been the source of&nbsp;persistent troubles&nbsp;for the company since two of the jets crashed, one in Indonesia in 2018 and another in Ethiopia in 2019, killing a combined 346 people.&nbsp;

The Justice Department reached a deal in May allowing Boeing to&nbsp;avoid criminal prosecution&nbsp;for allegedly misleading U.S. regulators about the Max before the two crashes.&nbsp;

Boeing was also in the news in June when a&nbsp;787 flown&nbsp;by Air India&nbsp;crashed shortly after takeoff&nbsp;and killed&nbsp;at least 270 people. Investigators have not determined what caused that crash, but so far they have not found any flaws with the model, which has a strong safety record.&nbsp;

Since its creation in 2005, the Healthy Habits for Life grant program has awarded more than $2 million through more than 2,000 grants. School personnel have used past grant dollars to educate students on healthy portion sizes, begin a daily walking program for students before or after school, invest in equipment for physical education classes and much more.

“Healthy Habits for Life grants give schools the tools they need to help kids be active, eat well and take care of their minds. These grants are more than money – they’re an investment in our future,” said Marlou Wegener, Chief Operating Officer of the BCBSKS Foundation. “By helping students build healthy habits now, we’re preparing strong, confident leaders who can make Kansas a healthier place for everyone.”

Healthy Habits for Life grants are available in the service area of the BCBSKS Foundation, which includes all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte. The maximum grant amount is $2,000 and grants are limited to one per school but&nbsp;multiple schools within a district can apply.

Kansas schools invited to apply for BCBS Healthy Habits for Life grants

Phone and internet services are vital to accessing healthcare and community services, finding employment, and calling for help in an emergency. However, the cost to stay connected is out of reach for many Kansans.

In observance of National Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in creating awareness of the program offerings and encourages those in need of assistance to apply.

Lifeline provides combined federal and state discounts of up to $17.02 per month to help pay for residential or wireless phone service, internet, or a bundled phone and internet plan. Subscribers living on tribal lands qualify for additional discounts. Currently, nearly 8.6 million Americans, including 19,500 Kansans, are enrolled in the program.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines) or participation in certain assistance programs such as: •&nbsp; Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pension and Survivors Pension Benefit&nbsp; •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Program (income based) •&nbsp; The Food Distribution Program in Tribal Lands&nbsp;

In addition, the Safe Connections Act (SCA) of 2022 helps survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking and related crimes get discounted phone, internet or bundled services through the Lifeline program. Those who qualify under SCA can receive up to six months of emergency Lifeline support and their privacy will be protected.
