The Hutchinson Zoo will give visitors an opportunity to learn about monarch butterflies and their annual migration during a free event Saturday, Aug. 29.
The Hometown Hutchinson Zoo event will feature activities for all ages centered on monarch butterflies and their remarkable migration journey.
Visitors will be able to participate in a monarch migration game, make butterfly-themed crafts and attend story times facilitated by the Hutchinson Public Library.
Zoo staff also plan to give participants an opportunity to help tag monarch butterflies. Tagging allows researchers to track monarch migration and learn more about the butterflies as they travel to their wintering grounds.
However, zoo officials said the tagging portion of the event will depend on whether monarchs are present that day. While the zoo expects monarchs to be in the area by Aug. 29, their presence cannot be guaranteed.
The event is free and open to all ages at the Hutchinson Zoo.
