U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) on Wednesday announced the members of his 2023 Service Academy Selection Board. The board will review applications and interview candidates who are applying for admission to the U.S. Service Academies. 

This group will include Calvin Wright of Hutchinson – Vice President/Chief Information Officer, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and U.S. Air Force Veteran.

Applicants will be interviewed by the selection board on Saturday, September 30, at Wichita State University. The U.S. Service Academies include the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“Nominating Kansas students to attend our service academies is one of my greatest honors as a U.S. Senator, and I appreciate the men and women who help with that selection by serving on the Service Academy Board,” said Sen. Moran. “The young Kansans applying for the academies demonstrate both academic success and a desire to dedicate their lives to serving their country. Hutchinson man part of Sen. Moran's 2023 Service Academy Selection Board

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;The Reno County Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday on a sex crimes arrest . According to the Sheriff's Office, on Monday, deputies responded to a residence in regards to a runaway from the state of New York. 

During the investigation of how the runaway arrived in Reno County, it was discovered the 20 year old suspect, David Gingerich of Ohio, went to the juvenile's residence and took her back to Ohio then to the residence in the 3600 Blk of South Herren Rd. 

Once the runaway was removed from the residence, she reported being sexually assaulted by Gingerich. Gingerich has been arrested for Aggravated Sex Trafficking, Rape, and Aggravated Criminal Sodomy. His bond has been set at $350,000. 

He made his first appearance Wednesday morning and is awaiting formal charges to be filed by the Reno County District Attorney's Office.

The person involved has not yet been convicted of a crime and are presumed innocent. The presumption of innocence shall continue until such time that the person accused may be found guilty by a court of law. 

Charges may be amended at the discretion of the District Attorney and Court.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Man arrested in Reno County for human trafficking

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Counselor Patrick Hoffman explained for the benefit of the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday what the process is when the Planning and Zoning Commission writes regulations, like they are currently doing with commercial solar development in the county. The vital point is that whether you are for solar development or against it, the planning and zoning commission level is where you can get changes made. 

County Commission chair Daniel Friesen distilled the public, in person, verbal comment opportunities regarding the issue down to their essence.

"Will there be public comment? Yes," Friesen said. "It will be after your draft is done. Should there be public comment before the draft? Currently, the answer is no, based on what the planning commission wants. Is the county commission taking public comment? Currently, the answer from staff is recommending no, but we can do what we want at the time."

With that said, if you have information you want the planning and zoning commission to consider, they are still taking emails to that effect.

"We prefer that, when people want to email or whatever, not to a single planning and zoning commission member," said Public Works Director Don Brittain. "When you send to staff, it goes to all of them at the same time, so that not one person is coming with some information to the meeting and the other six don't know what's going on, you've got to discuss it. They all get it a week or so ahead of time, they can all digest it and start making up their mind on how they want to act on it."

The public hearing date for the regulations has not been set yet, as they do not have a final draft of the regulations done yet. That could happen in the coming weeks. Once it does, they will put out public information letting everyone know where and when that public hearing will be.

"People feel so strong about this issue," Hoffman said. "You could just do a town hall hours and hours every day. Until they've actually drafted something and are close to figuring out where it's going to land, it's premature to just hear all those comments."&nbsp;

Solar reg comments need to go to planning commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; According to a message provided to property owners in the area of the Woodie Seat Freeway, work on the first phase of the project, the phase that includes the County owned bridge over the Arkansas River and the City owned infrastructure located north of the bridge and south of Avenue C will begin on Monday.

The county project will resurface the bridge at a cost of $1.4 million. The city project will mill and overlay the road surface, replace stormwater drains and piping, replace guardrails, and remove the median at a cost of $2.2 million.&nbsp;This will result in the closure of the freeway from the Arkansas River Bridge to Avenue A from Sept. 18 to Dec. 22. There will also be a closure of the same section in the spring of 2024 for 30 to 60 days.

Traffic will be detoured to the Arkansas River Bridge located by the Carey Park entrance on Main Street. All reopening dates are contingent to project progression, which can be slowed by weather or other unforeseen delays.

Woodie Seat closed starting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dairyland building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds is a place where Kansans can learn about where their milk comes from. Dairy farming is a growing part of animal agriculture in Kansas.&nbsp;

Kari Hamilton works as a mobile classroom instructor for Southwest Dairy Farm. She presents live cow milking demonstrations every day at the fair.&nbsp;

"It is so very important to let everyone know how good milk is for you and how well the animals are taken care of," said Hamilton. "Dairy cows are very happy, healthy animals and I just like to spread the awareness about how important milk is for us."

On Tuesday morning, Hamilton did a live milking demonstration of a Jersey dairy cow named Hazel Grace Blossom. She used a milking claw. The claw works by suctioning the milk out of a cow's udder.&nbsp;

 Hamilton said Jersey cows are milked twice in the morning and evening, and can produce 6 gallons of milk per day.&nbsp;

She also talked to the crowd about why milk is an essential part of a daily diet, and the features of a dairy cow. Milk from Jersey cows is best used for butter, cheese and ice cream.

"When you are getting those 3-4 servings of dairy you are giving yourself healthy blood pressure," Hamilton said to the audience. "It's good for our body in so many ways, so remember to get those 3-4 or more servings of dairy every day."&nbsp;

Milking parlor teaches about growing Kansas industry

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will hold a special meeting Friday to continue the search for a permanent city manager.

According to the agenda provided to Hutch Post, Friday's 3 p.m. meeting in the Council Chambers Conference Room will be an executive session.

Mayor Jon Richardson previously told Hutch Post that the council still needed to reduce the number of semifinalist candidates to a manageable number to bring in for interviews. He was thinking they would likely have three or four interviewees, depending on the council's preference.

City Council to hold special meeting Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — GriefShare is for individuals who have experienced the death of a family member or friend. This nondenominational program features Christ-centered, biblical teaching that focuses on grief topics associated with the death of a loved one. The DVD seminar features nationally respected grief experts and real-life stories of people, followed by a small group discussion about what was seen on the DVD.&nbsp;

Participants will find encouragement, comfort, and help in grieving the death of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, other family member, or friend. No matter what the cause of a loved one’s death, this is an opportunity to be around people who understand what others are feeling.&nbsp;

GriefShare will be held at&nbsp;Trinity United Methodist Church at&nbsp; 1602 N. Main in Hutchinson on Sundays, Oct. 1 thru Dec. 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

GriefShare class starts next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — When making the decision between buying a new and used vehicle, the cost of operation is one of the major considerations. AAA says that cost, when it comes to new cars, is increasing.

"Based on the latest figures, the average costs of owning and operating a new vehicle this year has increased significantly, with an annual expense of $12,182, or a monthly cost of $1,015," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "This is a pretty big increase from 2022, when the average yearly cost was only $10,728 or $894 monthly."

The overall average manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the new vehicles in the 2023 study is $34,876.&nbsp;

"The supply of vehicles has certainly been an issue," Steward said. "If you are looking for a vehicle, it's best to start early. We've seen this over the past couple of years, as we've come out of the COVID pandemic, limited inventory, consumers have fewer choices in a specific vehicle model and they may have to wait for a vehicle to be delivered."

&nbsp;AAA selects top-selling, mid-priced models and compares them across six categories: fuel, maintenance/repair/tire costs, insurance, license/registration/taxes, depreciation, and finance charges. The study assumes a five-year ownership period, with the vehicle being driven 15,000 miles/annually (or a total of 75,000 miles).

"Before discussing finance rates with a car dealer, make sure that you obtain pre-approval from your financial institution," Steward said. "Getting pre-approved, you'll have a threshold of the best lending rate and you can have more negotiating power with the dealer. Create a budget and factor in the different elements of ownership before you purchase, not just your monthly payment. Also consider insurance, the cost of gas and routine maintenance. All those elements are going to be coming out of your pocket, so it's important to understand that, so you don't get upside down in your vehicle costs."

This year's vehicles have an average annual finance charge of $1,253, a 90% increase from the previous year.&nbsp;

AAA: New car ownership costs more

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College will welcome Mark Schupbach, retired businessman and lay Bible leader, on Friday, September 22, 2023, for the fall Ross and Fern Freeman Lecture Series for Servant Leadership. The Freeman Lecture Series speaker will deliver his message at 10 a.m. in Culbertson Auditorium in Spencer Hall on the campus of Sterling College. The public is welcome to attend this free event.&nbsp;

“I am excited for Sterling College to host Mark Schupbach as the Freeman Lecturer for 2023. His breadth of experience in business and ministry will richly fulfill the aim of the Freeman Lecture Series,” said David Earle, vice president for advancement and alumni relations.

Schupbach’s involvement with the church and with ministry began more than 35 years ago. He has served as an elder and/or president on three church governing boards including Scofield Memorial Church as well as numerous non-profit boards, including The TurnAround Agenda with Dr. Tony Evans and Insight for Living with Dr. Chuck Swindoll. In addition, he served on the President’s Council at Dallas Theological Seminary for nine years.

Professionally, he founded CPF Texas, a private financial consulting firm in Dallas in 1985. He was named as one of the Top 100 Independent Advisors in America by Registered Representative Magazine and one of the Top 1,000 Financial Planners in America by Barron’s Magazine.

Schupbach has been married to Marty for 54 years. They have three married daughters and six grandchildren. They currently reside with split time between Frisco, Texas, and Lindsborg, Kan.

The Freeman Lecture Series seeks to educate individuals on the various values and applications of leadership by highlighting the servant leadership attributes present in others.&nbsp;

PRATT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Jeep Wrangler driven by Izabella Rose&nbsp;Lampe, 18, Kingman, was westbound on U.S. 54 four and one half miles east of Pratt. 

The Jeep rear-ended the second trailer pulled by a 2021 Freightliner semi driven by Daniel J. Lucas, 47, White Pine, Tennessee, who was attempting to stop at a marked railroad crossing.&nbsp;

 </figure>PRATT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Pratt County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Jeep Wrangler driven by Izabella Rose&nbsp;Lampe, 18, Kingman, was westbound on U.S. 54 four and one half miles east of Pratt. The Jeep rear-ended the second trailer pulled by a 2021 Freightliner semi driven by Daniel J. Lucas, 47, White Pine, Tennessee, who was attempting to stop at a marked railroad crossing.&nbsp;EMS transported Lampe to a Wichita Hospital. Lucas and a passenger were not injured. Kansas teen hospitalized after Jeep rear-ends semi trailer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If the rain kept you from coming out on Monday to the Kansas State Fair, but you had already purchased a voucher for a ride wristband for Dillons Dollar Day, you can still get some value out of it.

"There was a special Dillons Dollar Day wristband," said State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz. "There was a lot of people questioning, I'm not going out in the rain, what can we do? We worked with the carnival and the carnival agreed to, if they didn't use their voucher, they could bring it in for a $5 upgrade, they could use it any day that we have wristband day."

Go to the Fair ticket office with your voucher to get your value.

"Do not go to the ticket windows at the Carnival," Schulz said. "They will not know what to do. They'll just say it's not valid."

Remaining wristband days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

RENO COUNTY — Sylvia Road between Long View Road and Arlington Road is now reopened to all through traffic as of Tuesday, Sept. 12. The road has been closed since April 3 for bridge replacement.

Sylvia Road bridge is replaced

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;Nitrate levels have risen again above allowable limits in Rural Water District 101, which serves the Yoder area. The last Nitrate level test was collected on September 5, 2023. The level tested at 11.6 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas and Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems. 

Nitrate levels in water resources have increased in many areas due to applications of inorganic fertilizer and animal manure in agricultural areas.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Below are the historical dates where previous testing took place.

On June 6, 2023, the level tested at 11.2 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas and Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems.

A previous test was collected on March 6, 2023. The level tested at 10.5 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas and Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems.

On June 13, 2022, Reno County received a Nitrate result of 11.3 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems. A warning was then sent out on June 15, 2022, to Yoder residents to limit water usage, especially for infants under 6 months.

A second notice was sent to residents on September 6, 2022, due to additional testing.

On May 7, 2021, Reno County received a precautionary public drinking water advisory of potential Nitrate water quality from KDHE. A warning was then sent out on May 17, 2021, to Yoder residents to limit water usage, especially for infants under 6 months. A second notice was sent to residents on September 23, 2021, due to additional testing and a third notice was sent out October 4, 2021, due to additional testing as well.

A fourth notice was sent out on December 29, 2021, due to additional testing that was completed.

On August 12, 2020, Reno County received a precautionary public notice for acute nitrate violation from KDHE. A warning was then sent to Yoder residents to limit water usage, especially for infants under 6 months. A second notice was sent on September 3, 2020, due to additional testing. A third precautionary public notice sent on October 27, 2020, requiring bottled water to be provided, upon request, to any household with members at increased risk from the nitrates, such as infants, nursing mothers, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as identified by a health care provider.

Reno County is negotiating a purchase of water from the City of Hutchinson to mitigate the nitrate situation permanently.

A reminder that boiling water with nitrate contamination is not effective and can actually make the problem worse.
