HUTCHINSON, Kan. — “Eat a Donut and support a child this summer!”
That's what Major Paul James, Commanding Officer of the Hutchinson Salvation Army, says as the local assistance agency begins summer efforts to help as many people as financially possible. One of those ways is by sending kids to camp for the cost of only $10 per camp. At their Three Trails Camps in the KC area, each child gets to experience Sports camp, Music camp, and Character Building camp along with the opportunity to gain experiences they don’t typically get to experience. However, the cost of sending a child to camp cost way more than $10, and it’s very challenging to feed at that amount for a day.
Next weekend, Friday May 31 at 9:00 a.m., The Salvation Army is having a Donut event in front of their thrift store across from Smith’s Market on South Main St. in Hutchinson. They will have roughly 10-15 competitors who will try to eat the most donuts in 5 minutes to help raise funds for kids to go to camp, and for their international work in 130 countries. Their goal is to raise $6,000. They are currently at $1,200.
You can help in several ways. Come down and eat a free donut or two, have some free coffee, bring your cash or checks to vote for your favorite contestant, or go online to SalArmy.us/HutchDonutDay to vote for your favorite contestant. You can also go to The Salvation Army of Hutchinson’s Facebook Page and click on the link.
An even easier way is to send your donation to their local address at 700 N Walnut. “All in all, it’s a fun event to help support our struggling youth and families here in Reno County”, said Major James.
