Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 300 block of North Main Street on the east side, middle of the block.

In 1936, the Sproule brothers, Robert, Carl, Lee and George,  built and opened the State Theatre at 310 N. Main. 

Opening day was July 2 and had a seating capacity of 490. This was considered a "B" movie theatre, meaning it was not showing first-run films. 

The first photo was in 1938, with the marquee showing the current film "Diamond Jim" starring Edward Arnold.

In 1958, the theatre was completely destroyed by fire. In 1959, a new 400-seat theatre was constructed on the site using the outer walls of the old theatre. The new theatre was named the Flag Theatre and was reopened on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1959. 

In 1966, the Flag was sold to Jay Wooten and Dennis Montee with the Farmington Corp. They also owned some of the drive-in theatres. 

The second photo shows the Flag there in 1984.

 In 1998, Patrick McCreary helped organize the Hutchinson Family Children's Theatre at this location. The third photo shows the theatre today at 310 N. Main, now called the Family Community Theatre, showing live stage plays. Craig Williams is still the theatre's board president.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 28

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Recreation Commission (Hutch Rec) will be hosting their annual Salty Dog and Salty Pup Triathlons on Aug. 5.&nbsp;

The Salty Dog and Salty Pup Triathlons are part of the <a href="https://www.hutchrec.com/race-series-events/">Hutch Rec Race Series</a>.&nbsp;

With the Salty Dog Triathlon, swim, bike, and run through the beautiful Carey Park in Hutchinson, Kansas. Racers will challenge their endurance and showcase their athletic abilities during each leg of the race.

Part of the events will take place at Salt City Splash in Carey Park.

The event is chip-timed to assist Hutch Rec race officials with the accuracy of each leg, transition, and overall results. All&nbsp;participants will receive a finisher’s medal. 

Awards will be given for overall male/female finishers and top three male and female finishers in selected age groups. Participants are encouraged to follow the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/hutchrecraceseries">Hutch Rec Race Series</a>&nbsp;on Facebook.

Individual in the Salty Dog Triathlon will swim 400 meters in the pool, bike 10.5 miles on a course closed to vehicles, and run 3.1 miles on a paved trail.

Registration through Aug. 3 will be $60 in-person or online. Registration on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 will be in-person only and will cost $70.&nbsp;

Teams competing in the Salty Dog Triathlon will have an individual do each leg of the race consisting of a 400 meter swim, 10.5 mile bike ride, and a 5K run or walk.&nbsp;

Team registration through&nbsp;Aug. 3 will be $120 in-person or online. Registration on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 will be in-person only and will cost $130. 

Qualifying ages for both individual and team runs are 13 and older.&nbsp;

Then children ages five to 15 can still register for the Salty Pup Triathlon.&nbsp;

The Salty Pup Triathlon&nbsp;is a miniature version of the Salty Dog. It will take place after the Salty Dog Triathlon. Competitors will swim 100 meters, bike 4.2 miles, and run 1 mile on a course similar to the Salty Dog.

Salty Pup Triathlon registration through Aug. 3 will be $35 in-person or online. Registration on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 will be in-person only and will cost $45.&nbsp;

Firefighters will be at Dillons on 5th, and 30th, as well as Walmart on July 28th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and July 29th and 30th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. collecting school supplies for children in need.

Hairball will rock Kansas State Fair Sept. 14

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Renowned Christian artist and songwriter Matthew West will perform at the Kansas State Fair on Wednesday, September 13. He’ll be joined by up-and-coming Christian artist Anne Wilson.

Matthew West is a prolific artist, scoring 25 number one hits. He’s a five-time Grammy Award nominee and is the reigning Nashville Songwriters Association International Songwriter-Artist of the Year (putting him in the company of previous winners that include Luke Combs, Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan). His win makes him the first Christian artist to take home the honor in 20 years. In 2022, he won his fifth ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Christian Songwriter of the Year award and earned Song of the Year for “My Jesus,” which he co-wrote with Anne Wilson and Jeff Pardo.

Anne Wilson will open for West, bringing her unique transcendent vocals, and down-to-Earth storytelling style.

This Lexington, Kentucky native mixes the heart of contemporary Christian music with the sound of Country. Her 2021 debut single, “My Jesus,” became a GOLD-certified No.1 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart. Wilson is currently nominated for a Grammy Award for her 2022 debut album My Jesus, has won two GMA (Gospel Music Association) Dove Awards and two K-LOVE Fan Awards, while also scoring a coveted American Music Award nomination.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Tickets are still on sale for Downtown Hutch Uncorked for TECH on Aug. 18 in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

People will have the opportunity to stroll through local businesses in Downtown Hutchinson and sample a variety of red and white wines from vineyards across the U.S. Additionally, all these wines will be carefully paired with hor d’oeuvres from local restaurants.&nbsp;

This is a great opportunity for people to try new wines that they may not have ventured out to partake in yet, as well as sip some favorites.&nbsp;

All ticket holders for this event must be at least 21 years of age. &nbsp;Proceeds benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities served by TECH. &nbsp;

The TECH organization provides services and programs to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Reno County to live the fullest lives possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

TECH has been serving Reno County for almost 50 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The organization was started as a work opportunity agency by a group of parents that wanted to give the same opportunities everyone else had to succeed to their children with disabilities as they were about to graduate high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

By listening to the community, TECH grew to include day services programs, and even residential houses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

TECH is known for their fundraisers throughout the year.&nbsp;

Downtown Hutch Uncorked for TECH mid-August

A growing trend, at least in Stafford County, is for beef producers to slaughter, process, and package meat to sell directly to consumers. Those producers have to travel to the likes of McPherson and Kiowa to get the job done. Stafford County Economic Development is interested in changing that. Eco Devo Executive Director Ryan Russell and four others recently traveled to Abilene to speak with the owners of a mobile trailer. 

"We're planning to meet soon, hopefully in the next week, to discuss some of the options and what we've learned so far," Russell said. "USDA has a grant that we're looking at as a possibility. There might be other funding sources as well. Right now, we're just gauging interest from the community and looking at what funding sources we would try to get if we were to create a plan and move forward."

Midwest Meats in Abilene has a 13-foot trailer with cooling capacity for five to six cattle. A three-person crew can set up a station at a nearby farm and complete the slaughter process of a cow within 40 minutes.  

"The mobile trailer is just to actually slaughter the cattle at the farm," said Russell. "It allows them to have the butcher shop and the retail in the city limits, then going to out to the farm and slaughtering at the farms because there are regulations that don't allow them to actually slaughter within city limits."

The mobile trailer is just one option. Russell estimates a small slaughterhouse and packing facility would cost a minimum of $2-3 million. Within that facility, more decisions would have to be made about what animals can be processed if pig farmers and deer hunters express interest.

"We have to think about who's contributing," Russell said. "Is it just the feedlots or the farmers as well? We have three feeders in the county. We're looking at who is going to have skin in the game, plus how we do find financials outside of that in terms of federal or state funding to be able to build a facility."

The advisory was self-issued by the system on July 10, 2023, because of low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Boil water advisory lifted in Cheney

HUTCHINSON, KS- Ashley Webster, Director of Head Start, gave an update to the board. This included information about Parents as Teachers, Pre-K classrooms, USD 308 child care center, Reno County Head Start, and Reno County Education Cooperative. Information included funding mechanisms for each program and future needs and goals.

221 children are enrolled in the Head Start program for the 2023-2024 school year, still needing 3 more teachers. These three positions will serve 3-5 year olds. The combined capacity of all the programs is 579 children when completely staffed. Programs are aligning staffing with regulatory environment by recruiting staff members that are a good fit. Webster is hopeful to fill these positions mid-year and open additional rooms to meet the needs of the community.

During the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Johnson stated that the Hutchinson YMCA has requested to add on to their building or to build new, and they would like to build on the land where the current ESC/TSC building sits.&nbsp; Dr. Johnson stated that she will work with the YMCA to have them present a Letter of Intent at the August board meeting.

Under Board action items, the board took action on the following items:

-Adult meal prices are set for 2023-24 as $3 for breakfast and $5 for lunch.

-Jon McLean, Athletic Director and Ryan Ewy, Hutchinson High School Principal, gave an update and recommendations on students from our virtual and alternative schools to participate in Salthawk athletics, activities, and graduation.&nbsp; With the passing of the Virtual School Handbook, the following policy was adopted:&nbsp; “HVS Students will be able to participate in the Hutchinson High School Graduation if they are in good standing and have met the requirements of graduation. HVS students may participate in sports according to the KSHSAA requirements and are in good standing. HVS students may only participate in prom if they are invited by a current Hutchison High School student.”

-The Board declined a teacher’s request to be released from his/her contract.

This included information about Parents as Teachers, Pre-K classrooms, USD 308 child care center, Reno County Head Start, and Reno County Education Cooperative. Information included funding mechanisms for each program and future needs and goals.221 children are enrolled in the Head Start program for the 2023-2024 school year, still needing 3 more teachers. These three positions will serve 3-5 year olds. The combined capacity of all the programs is 579 children when completely staffed. Programs are aligning staffing with regulatory environment by recruiting staff members that are a good fit. Webster is hopeful to fill these positions mid-year and open additional rooms to meet the needs of the community.During the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Johnson stated that the Hutchinson YMCA has requested to add on to their building or to build new, and they would like to build on the land where the current ESC/TSC building sits.&nbsp; Dr. Johnson stated that she will work with the YMCA to have them present a Letter of Intent at the August board meeting.Under Board action items, the board took action on the following items: -Adult meal prices are set for 2023-24 as $3 for breakfast and $5 for lunch.-Jon McLean, Athletic Director and Ryan Ewy, Hutchinson High School Principal, gave an update and recommendations on students from our virtual and alternative schools to participate in Salthawk athletics, activities, and graduation.&nbsp; With the passing of the Virtual School Handbook, the following policy was adopted:&nbsp; “HVS Students will be able to participate in the Hutchinson High School Graduation if they are in good standing and have met the requirements of graduation. USD 308 BOE receives childcare program update; approves virtual school handbook

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The community of Newton is holding an art auction and gala to benefit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.choose-newton.com/?splash=https%3a%2f%2falltogethernewton.org%2f&amp;____isexternal=true" target="_blank">All Together Now</a>, the initiative to build an inclusive playground at Slate Creek Elementary on Aug. 29.

The goal is to raise $300,000 for a playground that all of Slate Creek Elementary's children can enjoy.&nbsp;

Slate Creek Elementary in Newton is home to Harvey County’s severely-multiply disabled (SMD) classroom where many students may have mobility devices or other special needs. 

Those devices and other special needs may limit their ability to play on existing playground equipment.&nbsp;

The inclusive playground would include pieces such as a ramp for wheelchairs, a communication panel, and music pieces.

The gala will feature live music by Prairie Highway, live and silent auctions, live painting demonstration by Virgil Penner, art by Slate Creek students and staff, and complimentary wine, beer, and light hors d’oeuvres.&nbsp;

The live art auction will include pieces by Joe Loganbill, Virgil Penner, Susan Bartel, Bob Neace, Beth Burns, Glen Ediger, Mary Goering, Lori Dreier, Denise Brueggeman, John Waltner, Gail Lutsch, and more.

All Together Now Fund is a component fund of Newton Community Foundation, and an affiliate of Central Kansas Community Foundation.

HARVEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Harvey County.

&nbsp;The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford Fusion driven by Susan Smith, 53, Newton, was northbound on Interstate 135 just north of 125th Street in the right lane.&nbsp;

The car left the roadway to the right, struck a bridge structure and came to rest in the right ditch.

EMS transported Smith to&nbsp;Ascension Via Christi St. Francis.

Kansas liberal arts college to focus on student access, academic expansion

TOPEKA — McPherson College secured endowment pledges to meet requirements of a $500 million challenge donation from an anonymous donor who committed another half a billion dollars to the small liberal arts college in Kansas.

The agreement with the benefactor allowed the large donation to be paid out over time or upon the donor’s death to give the college access to $1 billion. A majority of smaller matching gifts made to meet the challenge were estate commitments.

“Now, the work begins to build a bridge to our future endowment,” said Michael Schneider, the college’s president. “We need to carefully plan how the income from the endowment is deployed to reimagine and construct the campus of the future, build a much-needed rural health pipeline in Kansas, create a center for the future of automotive engineering and work to make college more affordable for all our students.”

“I am incredibly grateful to our anonymous donor for giving us an unprecedented opportunity — and responsibility — to build and implement our strategic vision of becoming a destination learning community,” he said.

Schneider affirmed the initial $500 million double-match had been secured during a meeting with about 200 faculty, staff and others. News of the second $500 million gift from the unnamed donor also was announced Friday in McPherson.

In November, the anonymous donor promised to deliver $2 for every $1 raised by McPherson College up to a maximum gift of $500 million. The college had to meet that mark by June 30. Under that scenario, the college’s endowment would grow by $750 million.

The supplemental commitment of $500 million would grow the endowment by at least $1.25 billion.

The McPherson College’s board of trustees voted to name the college’s endowment for the late John Ward and John Burkholder, where were graduates and faculty at the college. Ward graduated in 1950 and taught at McPherson College and University of Nebraska. Burkholder earned a degree in 1949 and taught biology for nearly 40 years at McPherson College.

The college’s agenda included expansion of the student debt project. It’s a partnership with local businesses to provide 25 cents for every dollar a student contributed to their education. The dramatic expansion of the college’s endowment would finance a building master plan.

In addition, administrators intend to create the Kansas Center for Rural and Community Health to provide&nbsp; practitioners with the latest technology and techniques. The college features a unique four-year program in antique automobile restoration. One objective would be to create a national center on engineering design and mobility.

McPherson College was founded in the 1880s and enrolls about 850 students.
